1年の半ばに近づくと、本ニューズレ ターではEPOの前年と過去10年の特 許出願統計データを分析することに しています。
With the middle of the year approaching, in this newsletter we take some time to examine some patent filing statistics for the previous year, and decade, at the EPO.
新規特許出願と特許付与 EPOにより受理された新規欧州特許 出願の件数は、安定的に増加してい た時期を経て、2020年にはわずかに 減少に転じました（受理された新規 出願は180,250件で、2019年より0.7 ％減少）。しかしながら、2020年の 大半にわたり直面した世界的異常事 態を考えれば、これは驚くほど良い 結果だと考えています。2011年から 2020年の10年間を振り返ると、新規 欧州特許出願の年間件数は25％増加 していました。
New Patent Applications and Patent Grants After a period of moderate growth, the number of new European patent applications received by the EPO fell slightly in 2020 (180,250 new applications were received, which is 0.7% less than the number received in 2019). Nevertheless, we consider that this is a surprisingly good result given the unusual circumstances that prevailed throughout most of 2020. Looking back on the decade, from 2011 to 2020 the number of new European patent applications year by year grew by 25%.

The number of new Direct EP applications received by the EPO in 2020 fell by 2344, or 3.1% compared to 2019, whereas the number of Euro-PCT applications increased by 1062, or 1.0% compared to 2019.

The number of European patents granted in each year increased by approximately 100%, i.e. doubled, from 2015 to 2019 but, in 2020, the number fell by 4069, or 3.0% compared to 2019.

Top Applicants
2020年の上位50の出願人は、同年におけ る欧州特許出願全体の3分の1を占めてい ます。そのうち39の出願人は2019年の 上位50位にも入っており、27の出願人は 2011年の上位50位にも入っていました。
The top 50 applicants in 2020 accounted for one third of European patent applications in total for the year. 39 were also in the top 50 in 2019 and 27 were in the top 50 in 2011.

上位国
Top Countries
6か国の出願人が、欧州特許出願の70 ％を占めています。残りの30％は、 約170か国の出願人により提出されて います。2020年に動向がいくぶん落 ち込んだと思われることを考慮する と、上位6か国中3か国（ドイツ・日 本・フランス）の出願人は、過去10年 間にわたり毎年ほぼ同じレベルで出願 を提出していました。他の3か国（米 国・中国・大韓民国）の出願人は、年 ごとに出願件数を増やす傾向を示して いました。
Applicants from six countries account for 70% of European patent applications. The remaining 30% are filed by applicants from around 170 countries. Taking into account that trends are likely to have been somewhat depressed in 2020, applicants from three of the top six countries (Germany, Japan, and France) have filed applications at, more or less, the same level, year by year, over the last decade. Applicants from the other three countries (United States, China, S. Korea) have shown a trend of increasing numbers of applications year by year.

Of the 180,250 new applications received at the EPO in 2020, 45% of these were from EPO states, with the US being the next-highest filing country/region with 25%, followed by Japan with 12%.

注目すべき点として、米国の出願人に よる出願は2011年から2020年に9243 件（26％）増加しました。同期間にお いて、大韓民国の出願人による出願は 4215件（71％）増加し、中国の出願人 による出願は10,890件（428％）増加し ています。
Of some note, applications by US applicants increased by 9243 (26%) from 2011 to 2020. Applicants by Korean applicants increased by 4215 (71%). Applications by Chinese applicants increased by 10,890 (428%) from 2011 to 2020.
また、2019年から2020年にかけて、米 国の出願人による出願は4.1％減少しま したが、大韓民国と中国の出願人によ る出願は、それぞれ9.2％と9.9％増加し ました。
Also of note, from 2019 to 2020, applications by US applicants experienced a 4.1% decrease, whereas applications by Korean and Chinese applicants experienced respective 9.2% and 9.9% increases.

全体としてEPO特許付与件数は、2015年 から2020年に95％増加しました。過去5 年間で、欧州特許の44％がEPO加盟国に 付与され、26％が米国に、15％が日本に 付与されており、EPOにより付与された 特許に関して、これらが上位3位を占め ています。過去5年間で特許付与件数が 最も増加したのが、EPO加盟国でした。
Overall, EPO patent grants increased by 95% from 2015 to 2020. In the last five years, 44% of patents were granted to EPO states, 26% were granted to the US, and 15% to Japan, making up the top three regions for patents granted by the EPO. Top Fields of Technology
EPOはWIPO国際特許分類（IPC）に 基づき、5つの広範な技術領域にわた る35の技術分野に特許出願を分けて います。新規欧州特許出願の件数に関 して、2020年と2011年の上位4つの技 術分野は、医療技術、デジタル通信、 コンピュータ技術および電気機械・装 置・エネルギーでした。
The EPO divides applications into 35 fields of technology across five broad areas based on the WIPO International Patent Classification (IPC). In terms of the numbers of new European patent applications, the top four fields, in 2020 and in 2011, were medical technology, digital communication, computer technology and electrical machinery, apparatus, energy.
実際、2020年の数字を2019年と比べ ると、医療技術は2.6％増加し、製薬 は10.2％増加、バイオテクノロジーは 6.3％増加しており、昨年におけるヘ ルスケアと医薬の堅調な成長を物語っ ています。 全体的に見て、新規欧州特許出願は 2011年から2020年に25％増加してい ます。12の技術分野における出願は 25％を上回る増加率を示し（緑で強 調された部分）、そのうち6つの分野 の出願は50％を超える増加率です。7 つの技術分野において、2011年よりも 2020年の新規出願が減少していまし た（赤で強調された部分）。

Indeed, comparing 2020 figures to 2019 figures, medical technology experienced a growth of 2.6%, pharmaceuticals experienced a growth of 10.2%, and biotechnology experienced a growth of 6.3% indicating a strong growth in healthcare and medicine in the past year. Overall, new European patent applications increased by 25% from 2011 to 2020. Applications in 12 fields of technology increased by more than 25% (see those highlighted in green), with applications in 6 of those fields increasing by over 50%. In 7 fields of technology, fewer new applications were filed in 2020 than in 2011 (see those highlighted in red).

結論
Conclusion
世界の大半が直面している現在の状況を 考えれば、前年と比較した2020年におけ るEPOで受理された新規特許出願のわず か0.7％の減少は、思いのほか小幅に留ま ったと考えています。その一方で、上記 のグラフが示しているように、2011年か ら2020年にかけて欧州出願と特許付与の 件数が増加したことは、喜ばしくやりが いを感じますし、多くの技術領域におい て、そう遠くない将来に2020年以前のレ ベルにまで回復するのではないかと期待 しています。
We consider the decline of only 0.7% in new patent applications received at the EPO in 2020 compared to the previous year to be surprisingly good given the current situation prevalent throughout most of the world. However, as the above graphs indicate, the increases in the number of European applications filed, and granted, from 2011 to 2020 is both positive and exciting, and we hope that the growth in many areas can return to their pre-2020 levels in the not-too-distant future.
