Fan noticeboard WELCOME Welcome back to the Abbey Stadium for today’s match, which comes in the middle of a glut of away fixtures for the team. It has been a frustrating period recently in terms of results, with three draws from our last four games, two of which could have quite easily been victories. Nevertheless, Mark has the team playing extremely well and everybody should be feeling confident ahead of this afternoon’s game. I received some sad news during the week about a life-long supporter, Ian Kirk. Ian was taken suddenly during the COVID pandemic and over 30 of his football family and friends have come to celebrate his life in the Signature Suite this afternoon. Ian lived in Newmarket and was a passionate U’s fan and Season Ticket Holder. He was respected and loved by everyone who knew him and is very sadly missed.

Tuesday night was a challenge at Doncaster Rovers following a disappointing game last weekend. At Shrewsbury, despite finding our way back into the game and wrestling good control of the match, the game unravelled around the sending off of Adam May. I thought the red card was harsh and he now sits out for three matches. Paul Digby’s fifth yellow card was somewhat debatable but nonetheless we were also without him in midweek. Dimitar Mitov was knocked out and split his head open and is now working through the concussion protocols, whilst Conor Masterson suffered a suspected broken nose. I decided to rest Joe Ironside after an incredibly tough period for him and Wes Hoolahan wasn’t quite ready to play. In addition to that, we had Tomáš Holý playing his first game having first met the players on Monday, Ben Worman making his first league start, Jubril Okedina and Harrison Dunk making their first starts for six games

and Jack Iredale playing in midfield for the first time. We had a fair few challenges to overcome! We would have loved to hold on for the three points and may have done better in the first half to extend our lead, but the spirit of the team was excellent. Greg and Liam travelled to be with the team and in the dressing room as they recognised that key senior figures were missing and they wanted to support the team. The game may have delivered two more points than it did but there were many positives to take from the evening. Our challenge is to stick at it and keep improving, to keep being hard to beat and to turn some draws into wins. But I must give the players credit for what they are giving us. And then there is you over 500 at Doncaster on Tuesday and vocal throughout. This United spirit on the pitch and in the stands is what will drive us forward. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Welcome to AFC Wimbledon, a team that The U’s have only played four times before. There were a couple of games against the predecessor club Wimbledon FC in the 1980’s. The club dates back to 1889 and played at Plough Lane in Wimbledon before it moved and played their first game in Milton Keynes in 2003 as Milton Keynes Dons. AFC Wimbledon was created by a group of supporters who could not accept the idea that their club would play 56 miles away in a place with no connection with their historical location. It is to their huge credit that they succeeded not only in creating a new club but that this year they are playing once again at a new stadium in Plough Lane, Wimbledon. It comes as no surprise therefore that the Fair Game group of clubs, of which we are a founder member, originated from AFC Wimbledon. A director of the club, and CEO of Fair Game, Niall Couper, will be at the game. One of the objectives of the group is to ensure, probably by way of independent regulation, that the heritage of any club should be protected and that includes not moving the ground away from the town or city which it comes from. Cambridge United have been very happy to sign up to that. Back closer to home, many thanks to the fans who made it up the A1 on Tuesday and also

to the 827 fans who watched on iFollow. This streaming platform works well for keeping fans who can’t travel connected with our games, and it provides additional income to the club. Those watching the game saw an organised, gritty, performance from a team that was hugely disrupted by suspensions and injury. It was great to see Ben Worman make his league debut and do so well. We also appreciate the help from our neighbours, Ipswich Town, in releasing Tomáš Holý on such short notice. He did a good job. Games are coming thick and fast and after today’s game we go to Morecambe on Tuesday for our rearranged fixture. Under current iFollow rules the home team must consent to a rescheduled Saturday game being streamed and we are pleased that Morecambe agreed to do this. I am sure that the hardy souls who have the time and dedication to make the 460-mile round trip on a Tuesday will do so. For many iFollow is the only option and for every pass sold there will be several more watching. EFL and all clubs are monitoring the usage of iFollow and the more people who use the platform the better. It will help make the case for extended coverage in the future. Back to today. Another tough League 1 match. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors AFC WIMBLEDON Mark Robinson’s men make the 140-mile round trip from Wimbledon today looking to bounce back following their previous outing – a 2-0 defeat against promotion chasing Wigan Athletic last Saturday. Despite picking up six wins from their opening 10 games in all competitions this season, the Dons have struggled to maintain their early season form, winning just one of their previous eight fixtures. A win at the Abbey Stadium today could see Wimbledon move back into the top half. Defeat, however, may see the 2015/16 League Two play-off winners slip down to as low as 20th – and below the U’s. Moving back into the impressively redeveloped Plough Lane last season will surely have AFC Wimbledon fans chompingat the bit to see their club push on further, continuing their incredible rise back up the footballing pyramid. After joining mid-way through the last

8

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V AFC WIMBLEDON

campaign and guiding them to safety, Mark Robinson will be hoping to do better than their previous 19th placed finished last campaign. The high-profile departure of striker Joe Piggott to Ipswich Town over the summer will no doubt have been a hit, with the former Cambridge United striker contributing to 25 goals in all competitions throughout the 20/21 season. However, goals so far this campaign haven’t been an issue for Mark Robinson’s men, with 20 League One goals this season being distributed around 11 players already. More impressively, Mark Robinson has been able to heavily rely on the Dons’ academy to provide genuine first team quality players this season, with five academy graduates starting in Wimbledon’s defeat against Wigan last week. One of which, Anthony Hartigan, who only made eight starts in League One last season, has really pushed on this campaign, becoming

an ever-present in the centre of the Dons’ midfield. Another off the Dons’ academy production line is 20-year-old Jack Rudoni, who progressed through the Wimbledon youth ranks after joining from Crystal Palace as a 10-year-old. The natural midfielder, who has spent the majority of this season playing down the right wing has scored four goals in just eight League One starts this season, topping the scoring charts for Mark Robinson’s side this season. Just one defeat in their opening seven games in League One this season had the Greater London based club sitting fourth following an entertaining 4-3 victory over newly promoted Morecambe mid-way through September. However, defeats against Plymouth and Arsenal in the Carabao Cup sparked a run in which has only seen the Dons win in one of their last nine outings in all competitions. Prior to defeats against Crystal Palace Under 21’s in the Papa John’s Trophy and Wigan Athletic last weekend, Mark Robinson’s side tasted victory against Lincoln City, loanee Aaron Pressley’s penalty was enough to seal all three points against the Imps. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES

This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and players of AFC Wimbledon to the Abbey Stadium. It is almost twenty years since the club was formed in 2002. Their journey back into the league and subsequent return to Plough Lane in 2020 shows what can be done when everyone comes together with a common goal and the drive to ensure their dreams and targets become reality. There were people who doubted that those involved would ever make it happen. With so many problems, doubters and obstacles they never gave up. One of those who made it possible was Erik Samuelson. Erik was CEO of the club for over 12 years and whenever you asked for his help, he would never let you down. He has now written a book telling the story of his experiences called All Together Now: The Extraordinary Story of AFC Wimbledon. I know there are many supporters who just like to read football books, so here is one for you. It is a really interesting read and story. This season we have seen the return of the Abbey Helpers on Matchdays. They now have hi-vis jackets to make them more visible. Their expertise and flexibility in helping both home and away supporters have been really appreciated by the club and myself. We have for the past few matches had

programmes back on sale around the ground. The sellers have been doing a brilliant job. I have started a new click and collect service where orders can be taken in advance of matches and then collected at the CFU/ Programme outlet in the front car park outside the shop. You can order a programme by visiting the CFU Website. I would like, if possible, to add to those volunteers already helping. If you feel that you would like to become an Abbey Helper or Programme Seller, please contact me by emailing dave.matthew-jones@cambridgeunited.co.uk. To improve speed and increase the number of supporters going through the turnstiles on matchdays, we are asking for supporters to ensure their e-ticket QR codes have a white background or have the relevant email attachment open to show the turnstile operator. Please also ensure you are going to the correct area of the ground before reaching the turnstile. If unsure please ask a steward, Abbey Helper or at the Ticket Office when collecting a ticket. Please look after yourself and enjoy following the team home and away this season. You can contact me via dave.matthew-jones@ cambridge-united.co.uk or by tweeting me at SLO@CambridgeUTD. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Good afternoon, With the FA Cup approaching it seems apposite, whilst trundling back down Cut Throat Lane, to dig out an old fixture from 30 October 2007 and the FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay against the black and whites from the county town of Staffordshire. I have said on here many times that the Conference years were a blur period, so it was interesting looking at the attached programme and thinking I was only 33 at the time (sic-ed). The U’s had drawn 1-1 at Marston Road the previous Saturday which had been our second visit there in a month. And of course, another showing for the infamous ‘Newmarket Town’ third strip of yellow/royal blue/yellow which was to appear later in the season again at Forest Green. Back in the day the concept of a third kit was pretty alien, even in the Premier League. How things have changed. I see Coventry have just brought out a third kit, in the last week of October! Anyway, back to the game - a Scott Rendell penalty ensured a replay three days later and this time we made no mistake trouncing the Rangers 5-1 with a double for

Olly Knights and one each for messrs Boylan, Rendell and Wolleaston. In the squad that evening for the visitors were none other than Tom Youngs and Fred Murray. The prize? A home tie with either Crawley or Aldershot Town in the first round proper on 10 November. It turned out to be Aldershot whom we beat 2-1 in front of 2,641 but our journey ended in the next round. On this day in 1960, Diego Armando Maradona was born in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. He made his senior debut in Argentina 10 days short of his 16th birthday. He scored 34 times in 91 appearances for his country and participated in four World Cups. He played in Spain for Barcelona and famously won two Serie A titles for Napoli in 1986/7 and 1989/90. He had tattoos of Che Guevara and Fidel Castrol on his arm and left leg and he died on 25 November 2020, fifteen years to the day after the passing of another footballing great, this time from the back streets of Belfast. Enjoy yourselves. ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen “Unity to be real, must stand the severest strain without breaking.” Mahatma Gandi Most of us have been delighted to see the real Wimbledon re-established as a league club, given their sickening take over by the Milton Keynes franchise. In some ways they are a similar club to us, having risen twice from obscurity to the higher reaches of the league. Unlike us, they reached Division One and won the FA Cup in 1988. We are still waiting to do that. They have also returned to their roots at Plough Lane, having ground shared with Kingston for a number of years. This was a homely ground like many we visited in the Conference. It was good for the trains and had a good local chip shop but had little else to recommend it. On one occasion, United fans enjoying a beer in a local pub were invited by scantily dressed strippers to come and see the show next door. Naturally we declined since, for us, football must always come first. Wimbledon’s season has been very uneven so far, particularly of late and they, like us, will be looking for a good result, however it is achieved. Entertaining or not, we will all be grateful to see our teams playing each other in a traditional ground, unsullied by owners who don’t care about the aspirations of their fans

or investors hoping to make a quick buck or several before disappearing. Who knows? One day our ground might belong to us once again?! Our game at Shrewsbury reminded us, if we needed it, that nothing can be taken for granted. There is little margin for error in this league. The game turned on a sending off which reflected little credit on the Referee and even less on the hysterical theatrics of some of the Shrewsbury players. Pressurising and conning officials is in my opinion just another form of cheating, whoever does it. Frankly it threatens to ruin the game we love. We should remain confident. This United team are resilient and determined. We will almost certainly see youngsters playing their part as injury and suspension take their toll on our very small squad. They will be ready for the challenge. Unlike some of the so called big teams, our players are well managed, well prepared and they all play for the good of the team rather than for the team. In Bonner we trust. This will be another season to remember. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Women Darren Marjoram

Today promises to be another great game in a season full of fixtures to look forward to, this time against AFC Wimbledon. On behalf of everyone connected with the Women’s section of the club, we wish Mark and the lads the very best of luck for today. Let’s get behind them and create another great atmosphere! Last weekend saw two excellent results for the Women’s teams. The First Team travelled to Kings Lynn in the Women’s FA Cup for a tricky away tie against a team doing well in the division below, but came away with an excellent 3-0 win and a good performance. The first half saw us dominate for long spells but a combination of good goalkeeping and not being clinical enough in front of goal meant it was still 0-0 at the interval. The players were asked to produce a high tempo start to the second half and couldn’t have delivered in better fashion than Amy Howlett tapping home after 20 seconds following an excellent turn and shot from Ruth Fox, whose shot was touched onto the crossbar by the Kings Lynn keeper. On 65 minutes, the lead was doubled after

SPONSORED BY

Laura Mitchell delivered a pin-point free kick into the box which was finished by new signing Alysha Stojko-Down, and Ruth Fox ensured the game was over as a contest when she headed home from a corner to make the score 3-0 with a thoroughly professional performance. The win saw the U’s into the next round where they face a trip to Chesham. Whilst this is fantastic news, it does unfortunately mean that we can’t fulfil our planned fixture against QPR at the Abbey. That will have to wait for now but we do plan to still play a game there this season. The Women’s Development team were also in action with a local derby game against Cambridge City and they completed an impressive day for the club when they came out 1-0 winners, with the winning goal scored by Tia Johnson. So it smiles all round with two away wins and two clean sheets. Many thanks to everyone who has been to watch and support the Women’s teams so far this season, your support really helps. All Season Ticket Holders can attend games for free so it would be great to see as many new faces as possible and have your support over the next few weeks and months. Up The U’s! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP Welcome back to the Abbey Stadium on this Halloween weekend. We’re well and truly embarking on a period of crunch time with our 24 members eager to continue or pick up momentum as the league table starts to take shape. Before we dissect the trials and tribulations of the division following a hectic weekend of football, let’s review some of the midweek action. Wigan Athletic couldn’t capitalise on their opportunity to climb to the summit of Sky Bet League One after they fell to a 1-2 defeat at home to Graham Appleton’s Lincoln City. Full value for their win, the Imps drew first blood on the 14th minute thanks to a calm Dan Nlundulu strike. The lead was extended ten minutes into the second half when TJ Eyoma slotted home inside the area to give the visitors breathing space. Gavin Massey pulled one back for the hosts deep into stoppage time, but it was too little too late at the DW Stadium faithful suffered defeat. Remarkably, the Tics are yet to win an evening clash - losing their last three on the bounce. The shares were spoiled at the Keepmoat Stadium as Doncaster Rovers and Cambridge United battled out a 1-1 draw. The U’s were stifling the struggling side during a blistering opening minutes – pouncing on the 7th minute when excellent work from live wire Shilow Tracey forced Dan Gardner into an own goal. The second half proved contrasting as the hosts pushed in their numbers for an equaliser as they applied the pressure on a depleted United side. It paid off on 68 when a piledriving strike from Ethan Galbraith cannoned off the right post and into the net to ensure that the sides couldn’t be separated, despite both sides coming close to winners near the death. It shapes the table up in an intriguing way with of course all still to play for. Plymouth Argyle - 14 unbeaten and looking rampant - live to fight another day on top. However,

22

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V AFC WIMBLEDON

Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers are also cemented on 30 points with a game in hand after a late showing on Saturday where the Chairboys maintained their 100% start at fortress Adams Park. That leaves a two-point gap from the aforementioned Wigan Athletic in 3rd - with two losses in three proving costly. Breathing down their necks are Carabao Cup quarterfinalists Sunderland who, despite suffering a brief setback in their last outing, will fancy their chances of soon becoming frontrunners. Rotherham United are the fifth and final side labelled as the early pace-setters thanks to a run of eight games without defeat, they boast a three-point advantage over Oxford United, the last of the play-off pack. The U’s are building impetus after four wins in five; you can argue, nonetheless, that they’re yet to reach top gear. On 22 points and on the cusp of the top six are MK Dons who are in the midst of a sticky run. Just the solitary win in five has handed them the tricky task of reigniting those scintillating early-season displays. Burton Albion are level on 22 points after a really consistent start as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink continues to solidify the Brewers. One loss in eight, albeit five of those concluding as draws, Sheffield Wednesday are gradually edging towards a promotion tilt. In a mirroring form and situation are free-flowing Ipswich Town, who are a point behind but maintain a handy goal difference after already plundering 29 goals. Accrington Stanley are proving a tough outfit to predict – despite two successes in eight, they’re tied with the Tractor Boys. The morale-boosting victory for Lincoln City cements them in the middle of the pile with a consistent two wins, two draws and two losses in their last six. Bolton Wanderers occupy 13th with an identical record but are falling after

a dismal winless run of four games. Fellow newcomers Cheltenham Town are just behind and remain steady. Today’s visitors AFC Wimbledon are a point behind and arrive at CB5 adamant to address their form of one win in seven. The same feat is a necessity for Portsmouth – the Cowley brothers are understandably under immense pressure after an abysmal run where they’ve experienced one victory in two-and-a-half months. Three points for Cambridge United would certainly go down well, the draw specialists are winless in seven, although they’ve picked up a point in five of those. Floating above the relegation zone are: Morecambe, Gillingham and Shrewsbury Town, with the latter galvanised from their

barnstorming weekend result. Consecutive defeats put Fleetwood Town in 21st, but over the course of their last 10 encounters and the fact they’ve got goals all over the pitch, they should remain optimistic. Charlton Athletic, who relieved Nigel Adkins of his duties recently, will hope that nicking three points at high-flying Sunderland kickstarts their season as they aim to reduce a two-point gap. Doncaster Rovers are the penultimate side but two games unbeaten is a good foundation to build upon. Last but not least, Crewe Alexandra are rooted to the bottom and now six points adrift after one win in 14. Just treats and no tricks is the next objective for the Railwaymen. ■ Owen Mizon

United were forced to settle for a point in Doncaster on Tuesday night as a first half own goal was cancelled out by a stunning strike in response from the home side, as Ethan Galbraith pulled the team’s level with 20 minutes to go. United came the width of the woodwork away from winning it in the dying minutes, as Harvey Knibbs’ header crashed off the post in injury time.

CUFCRelaunched Lottery

The CUFC Lottery is changing. We will still be having two weekly draws, but there will now be a guaranteed £100 winner each week. And all the proceeds – after prizes and essential costs – will continue to go towards improving the fan experience at The Abbey as well as a small number of deserving local causes. The Must Win Monday draw will be won every week, while the prize fund for the Abbey Accumulator will increase by £50 each week until it’s won, at which point the prize fund will re-set and start accumulating again. Not only that, we’ll also be having some ‘money can’t buy’ prizes from time to time too. Historically, the Cambridge United Lottery grew to become one of the biggest football club lotteries in the country, and certainly within East Anglia. A total of 26,000 members were playing each week, with tickets sold through 200 agents. By 1969 the Club were trying hard for election into the Football League and weekly sales of the lottery had reached 45,000, bringing the club over £1,000 (£15,000 today) per week of unbudgeted extra income.

Today, the CUFC Lottery aims to raise funds for improvements to both Club and fan amenities at the Abbey Stadium, as well as local community projects. Examples of projects recently funded by the Lottery include the purchase of a tractor, and the purchase and installation of two new scoreboards, various hand-dryers and a wealth of materials to improve the pitch and the Abbey Arms. Over the years, the Lottery has provided essential support to keep the Abbey up to scratch and the aim is to increase this support to benefit our loyal fans. You can sign up Annually (£104), Six monthly (£52), Quarterly (£26) or Monthly (£8.67), so why not give it a go? You have to be in it to win it, after all! And with a vibrant lottery earning the club extra facilities and also improving the fans’ experience, who knows what the future could hold for the U’s? Simply scan the QR code or visit www.cufclottery.co.uk to sign up! The CUFC Lottery is kindly sponsored by Postscript, www.wearepostscript.co.uk www.cambridge-united.co.uk

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE

CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman Last Saturday’s loss at Shrewsbury proved one of those games, where there was more behind the scoreline than first meets the eye. What cannot be argued, firstly, is the fact that the U’s – prior to Tuesday’s trip to Doncaster – had conceded the first goal in nine of their 13 league games. Mark Bonner referred to this when I spoke to him post-match but, there were always going to be bumps in the road, especially in a new division so, this will no doubt be addressed and the statistic can hopefully sail over the horizon. I’d certainly be glad of not having to reference it whilst on air for too much longer! What they have become adept at this season, though, is pocketing points from losing positions – five times in fact. Yes, not a sustainable situation, but a super characteristic to have nonetheless. It looked as if that was to be replicated at the New Meadow following Jack Iredale’s sumptuously hit equaliser, the like of which he has been threatening to deliver all season. Those that have gone before him in that left-back spot and had a similar tractionengine left foot, i.e. Wayne Hatswell, Alan Kimble to name but two, would have doffed their caps. Jack’s goal followed a sustained spell of U’s pressure and I thought they were well set to go on and win the game. However, the complexion changed completely when Adam May was controversially sent off; an incident I have looked back on countless times and am still not convinced is worthy of a red. Worth pointing out also, that in his 81 games in charge, Mark Bonner had never seen one of his charges dismissed, (or even suspended) and will not want it repeated any time soon. The U’s then went with three at the back, were left exposed and, in the blink of an eye, three goals are conceded to flatter the opposition. Supporters will have woken up on Sunday morning with that horrible sense of remembrance, not be inclined to reach for

the phone, laptop or paper with us much enthusiasm as after a win. Mostly, just wanting the next game to come around as quickly as possible to - fingers crossed - dissipate the hurt and emotional pain. Sometimes it’s horrible being a fan! Thankfully that pain was dampened somewhat, after the battling draw at Doncaster on Tuesday. It is remarkable how often, in the face of adversity, different qualities emerge. Despite having three key central midfielders absent, players operating out of position, youngster Ben Worman making his debut, likewise an emergency keeper between the sticks, the drive and commitment shown certainly helped earn a point they thoroughly deserved. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

Academy UPDATE

In the lead up to the U18’s FA Youth Cup fixture against Southend next Thursday, today we take a look back at their most recent game against Northampton Town. United started the game really well with both Saleem Akanbi & Dan Barton troubling the Cobblers backline with numerous final third entries, but both struggled to take their chances. Brandon Njoku also had a glorious opportunity to score, but his touch eluded him at the crucial time. These missed chances gave Northampton hope and they grew into the game, creating a couple of half chances in the process. Their big centre forward was causing United problems and long balls in-behind the U’s backline continued to be a theme of the first half. A few more openings came and went for Cambridge but all opportunities either failed to hit the target or suffered bad luck at the hands of a difficult pitch.

United changed to a diamond at the start of the second half to provide additional support up top against their backline. Unfortunately, this plan was thwarted with Brandon Njoku suffering an injury midway through the half. Northampton rarely threatened throughout the match, although did hit the post in the second-half. It was the U’s who looked the most likely winners with the final opportunity falling to Kai Yearn in the 90th minute, but his shot was aimed straight at the keeper. Despite the clean sheet and maintained unbeaten league record, it was a disappointing result but attentions now turn to Gillingham this weekend before the FA Youth Cup fixture against Southend the following Thursday. In our next update we will bring you an overview of the Half-Term Academy Programme along with a report of our Floodlit Cup Fixtures! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Community Trust Planet Super League

After a thrilling Planet Super League semi-final which was the highest-scoring match in the history of the competition, the U’s are fighting it out with eight other club’s this week to be named Planet Super League Champions. Planet Super League is an initiative set up with the upcoming COP26 Global Climate Change summit in mind to challenge the public to complete small simple activities that will have a positive impact on the environment. There are two kinds of activities in PSL: (i) Some have a direct impact on cutting emissions – such as adjusting the thermostat. (ii) Some are about helping younger people get closer to nature and learn more about it. These don’t have an immediate impact, but in the longer term, they are important for getting people to care for the environment. By coming together last week, our 4,328 goals meant 21 tonnes of CO² emissions cut: an equivalent of planting 1,057 trees. Whilst the individual actions are relatively

34

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V AFC WIMBLEDON

small, it is by coming together as a United fanbase that we are making a big difference! With just a couple more days to go until entries close for the final, you can still contribute towards our total and help us be crowned champion. To help Cambridge reach the top, go to www.planetsuperleague.com and sign up with Cambridge United as your selected team. Choose your activities to complete, upload your evidence and score goals for the U’s! Here are some of the activities that you get points for: - Eat a meat-free meal - Have some time away from a screen in the evening - Walk/run/cycle/ participate in sport up to 2km - Walk/run/cycle/ participate in a sport up to 5km -- Hang your washing on the line - Kick something recyclable into a recycling bin - Share a written/drawn activity you’ve completed at home - Use public transport The final ends on Monday 1st November so let’s kick climate change out and let’s be champions, together. ■
