Fan noticeboard WELCOME Welcome back to the Abbey for tonight’s game against Doncaster Rovers. After the FA Cup exploits at Newcastle, it’s good to get back to the bread and butter of league football, especially after the last-gasp win at Lincoln on Saturday. The team are playing with a huge amount of confidence and belief, which is fantastic to witness on a weekly basis. The Club would like to place on record a huge congratulations to our very own Alf Walker on receiving a Long Service Award after 45 years at Cambridge United.
On another note, this programme will be our final one working with Hashtag Digital Media after 1 ½ seasons together. Hashtag provided us an incredible service when football went behind-closed-doors, allowing us to continue providing programmes in a digital format for our supporters. With the re-introduction of supporters to the Abbey, we wanted to offer a printed publication which is why we partnered with Bishops Printers, to bring the digital programme into print. Although we are now moving ahead with new partners, I would like to offer my most sincere thanks to Darren and the team at Hashtag Digital Media for their hard work and excellent service. Finally, get behind our youngsters at the Abbey tomorrow as the U18s take on Leeds United in the FA Youth Cup Fourth Round. Tickets are cheap – at just £3 adults, £1 kids – and the team have shown terrific skill and courage to make it this far. United in Endeavour.
Alf undertook his first game as head steward in 1976 when Cambridge United played Stoke City at the Abbey Stadium and has since shown amazing commitment towards the Club. Having attended in the region of 135 training sessions, the U’s supporters couldn’t hope to have a more qualified person inside the stadium for when an emergency occurs. On behalf of everyone at the Club, congratulations Alf!

MarkHeadBonner coach Last week was a historic one for our Football Club and to all who attended, supported and sent congratulatory messages, thank you. The Newcastle United game put us on a stage we are not used to. Not only in the game, but in the build up and aftermath of the 90 minutes. I thought firstly that the players handled the atmosphere superbly well and came through a thorough test with flying colours. As important, we have seen and heard countless articles, interviews and podcasts since, in which the club has exuded pride, humility and good humour. These are important characteristics for anyone here and as we continue to develop a culture, ones that will drive us forward.
“The Newcastle United game put us on a stage we are not used to. Not only in the game, but in the build up and aftermath of the 90 minutes” Following the game with an excellent victory against Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy was the perfect next step and showed an excellent mentality and focus to avoid the potential ‘after the lord mayors show’ type event. On Saturday, the victory at Lincoln was arguably the most important of them all and one in which we rode our luck first half and had to defend the goal outstandingly well to get to half time level. The overall course of the game was that both teams created chances and counter attacked well. It did look to be heading towards a 0-0, but the late goal summed up the drama of the week, the spirit of the team and the connection to the supporters perfectly. We move now into a week of two home games. Both teams who have improved in recent weeks and having already drawn with them this season, we know the strengths of
the teams and are well aware of the demands of this league and the level we have to get to in order to be competitive. Also this week, the Under 18’s play Leeds United in the FA Youth Cup. This will be a brilliant occasion and a really tough game for us, but one which Tom, Jimmy and all the staff will have the players well prepared for. We look forward to the challenge of the game and hope that many of you can come and support the players for what is a big night for them. Finally, having been highlighted that last weekend was my 100th game leading the team, may I thank everyone for their kind words and the support I have received on all sides since taking on the role. I really am grateful and delighted to play a part in this chapter in our history. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO
Welcome to all who have made the journey from Doncaster. Although results have not gone your way for a few games there is absolutely no doubt this will be a tough game. All runs come to an end sometime. Clearly I hope it is not today! Former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson once said: “A week is a long time in politics”. The same could be said for our week just gone. A historic win in Newcastle in the FA Cup, a win v Portsmouth in the Papa John’s Trophy and then a fantastic last minute win v Lincoln on Saturday. The Newcastle result will live long in the memory. This was such a good day for the 5,000 U’s fans who made it up the A1. Travelling on Saturday it was great to see so many U’s fans including the group I bumped into at the Blyth services. I was asked for a prediction and bravely said a win. It is great that we can dare to dream this season. Of course there will be downs as well as ups. That’s in the nature of football but everyone should enjoy the wins that give such magic moments. We now have a big game v Luton coming up on 5 February. It will be a sell-out and the South Habbin will be kept for home supporters. It promises to be a hard fought game. Before then we have another big match in
the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup. This Wednesday 19 January, our U18’s take on Leeds United at the Abbey. We have progressed well in the competition and this is a great opportunity to see our Academy players go up against Premier League youth opposition. The kick-off is at 7.00PM and prices are low at just £3.00 and £1.00. Do come if you can. The Papa John’s Quarter Final game vs Rotherham will be on Tuesday 25 January. I know many don’t like this competition and I have argued the case for it on the Under the Abbey Stand pod. Win and we are one game away from a trip to Wembley. If you can’t go it will be available on iFollow. Finally, you will have seen that we announced Alex Tunbridge as my successor as CEO this week. We had 222 applications for the job and there were a number of very strong candidates. We went through a detailed selection process. Alex is a great fit for us and he will join in April where we will work together for a few weeks before he takes over at the end of the season when I will return to the Board. For now, the focus is on Doncaster. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors DONCASTER ROVERS Doncaster Rovers, under the permanent stewardship of manager Gary McSheffrey, make the 244-mile round trip to the Abbey Stadium looking to pick up their first three points on the road this season. Despite only winning one of their last 11 games in all competitions, there has been a notable upturn in performances since Gary McSheffrey was given the nod for the manager’s job towards the end of December. Most recently, Omar Bogle’s second-half goal was unable to spark a comeback against Wigan – having found themselves two-goals down to the promotion chasing Latics after 54 minutes. The absence of key man, and once tipped ‘wonderkid’, John Bostock, who reportedly turned down a ten-year contract at Barcelona after making his Crystal Palace debut aged just 15, has certainly hit Gary McSheffrey’s side. The midfielder looks to have finally found a settled
8
CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V DONCASTER ROVERS F.C.
home following the 29-year-old’s 12 previous transfers. Despite the midfielder’s defensive responsibility, Bostock had chipped in with two assists this season before being side-lined through injury. However, Donny fans may not have to wait too long before the midfielder makes his return to the starting eleven, with manager Gary McSheffrey suggesting that the former Tottenham man, who’s currently in rehab following undergoing surgery on ankle ligament damage suffered in November, could be back a week or two before the start of February. Memories of the two sides 1-1 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium will be fresh in fans’ minds having only met in the league at the end of October. Following some excellent work by Shilow Tracey down the U’s left, the winger’s cross was turned into his own net by defender
Dan Gardener just seven minutes into the game. However, after 68 minutes, Doncaster Rovers’ endeavours were rewarded as Ethan Galbraith excellently fired in from 25-yards. Tuesday’s visitors Doncaster boast the historical advantage when it comes to headto-head fixtures between the two sides over the past 50 years, with Donny winning on 10 of the 30 occasions, and the U’s only prevailing on eight occasions, and not since November 2005 – with Cambridge United running out 3-2 winners in the LDV Vans Trophy at the Abbey Stadium. Prior to October’s meeting, Doncaster sealed a come-back win in February 2017, with Donny, en route to eventual League Two promotion, winning 3-2 in front of 4,236 at the Abbey Stadium. Tommy Rowe, Mathieu Baudry and John Marquis all striking to seal Rovers’ first league win in six. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES This evening we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Doncaster Rovers to the Abbey Stadium. In the Portsmouth programme we spoke about the Family Excellence Scheme. One of the clubs who have led the way since its introduction has been Doncaster. They are totally focused on improving the Matchday experience for all their supporters. They are also willing to try different things while challenging themselves to improve. During the summer they kindly helped us with a questionnaire concerning COVID-19. After every match we ask supporters if there are any seats needing to be repaired or facility issues needing to be addressed. I thought it would be good to provide a short update concerning some of the projects we have been working on and completed since the start of the season. • Due to safety concerns we had to change the seats in D’Block • Provided D’ring handle posts in the Main Stand to assist supporters with the steps • Provided additional accessible spaces in the South Stand • Provided additional signage to highlight blocks A & G • Re-painted the step edges on the stairways and in the Main Stand • Provided new signs for the Habbin Stands • Improved the Abbey Arms Area. • Improved the Fibre Network around the ground • Improved the Accessible areas at the South Stand • Provided the Picturepath app I am really grateful for all the assistance Ian Darler, Mick Brown, Andy Harper-Scott and all the volunteers in completing the repairs and new projects. If you would like to report a broken seat/ bench in the Main or South Stands, please contact the by emailing me

via emailing dave.matthew-jones@ cambridge-united.co.uk. You can also report any facility issues. We will endeavour to repair or address them as soon as we can. Personally, my favourite project over the past 12 months has been to see scoreboards working again on Matchdays. Their provision is due to the work and fundraising of the CUFC Lottery and the group that run it. If you haven’t joined yet, visit www.cufclottery. co.uk and sign up today. The lottery helps finance many of the amenities, activities and improvements around the ground. The more members, the more projects can be completed. There are plans to make further improvements and changes in the coming months that will hopefully help supporters to enjoy the match day experience. Enjoy the game. We all need to Be Loud, Be Proud and Be United. We need to be the 12th Man. ■
In tribute to Enid Douglas
On Saturday 8th January 2021 in a small stadium up in the North East, my brother Sam and I took our seats in the away end a few minutes prior to kick off. I looked to my left and saw sat in the seat next to mine, Colin Proctor and his family. I’ve met Colin several times, and I couldn’t quite believe the odds that were overcome to be sat next to him at this game. Why was this so significant? Colin runs the Vice President’s Club at the Abbey, a group my grandparents were members of for many years. Out of the five thousand away fans, Colin is probably the only person in that ground who knew my grandparents as well as we do. Sam introduced himself and shared with Colin the sad news that my grandma, Enid Douglas had passed away the day before after a battle with dementia. Enid loved Cambridge United. She attended hundreds of games between the 1970s and early 2000s and in the 1980s she represented the Club as the wife of former Club Director Tony Douglas, who himself continues to battle against dementia today. Across the country, Saturday morning brings traditions. For us, we would head to my grandparents’ house where Enid would cook breakfast for everyone. Sausages from Newmarket, crispy bacon, the lot. The smoke alarm would go off every time. Enid would ask us how we thought the U’s would get on in the match and being the positive person she is, always believed we would win. I remember one game at the Abbey against Cardiff City, where the visitors manged to accumulate three red cards but the U’s still couldn’t manage a victory in what was a painfully frustrating match that ended 0-0. “Well I thought we played well” my grandma would tell us after the game! She never had a bad word to say and just enjoyed the football, in victory and defeat, unless the
assistant referee disallowed a Cambridge goal for offside. Apparently that just wasn’t fair! There was a sense that it was meant to be on Saturday. Enid loved Cambridge, but she also had a soft spot for Newcastle; Keegan and Beardsley in particular! A story that has been told many a time within our family is from 1984 when Newcastle visited the Abbey. Enid was determined to meet Keegan and decided to go on a tipsy search around the stadium to get his autograph. I am not sure if she ever got it, but the thought of her chasing after a terrified Kevin Keegan has much more sentimental value than an autograph would ever bring. Like so many other families who have seen the heartache dementia can cause, ours face a tough road ahead but we will do our best to support each other, and most importantly Tony, through this difficult time. I’d like to thank Colin for looking after both of my grandparents during their later years of supporting the Club. I spoke with him at half time at Newcastle about how we can honour Enid and he welcomed a piece in the matchday programme. I’d also like to thank Mark Bonner who upon hearing of my grandma’s passing, took the time to get in touch with my family to send his condolences just hours after securing the most historic win of his career. It’s at times like these you see the best in people, and the support from the Club has been so heartwarming for our entire family. Enid is loved by so many and will be missed by all who knew her. She is remembered by her husband Tony, their children Paul and Andy, daughters-in-law Jacquie and Alison, grandchildren Sam, Jamie and Amy and greatgrandchildren Oscar and Maisie. The win at Newcastle was special. Almost inevitable. Rest in peace, Grandma.

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Well it’s been over a fortnight since the Pompey farce. That took a bit of getting over I must say, although events the following weekend did help! Welcome again to Doncaster Rovers, who are having a tough season to date, nine points adrift of the safety zone prior to the weekend’s fixtures. It is a shame to see our former star right back Kyle Knoyle having a tough time of it. As well as a relegation battle, he has had a tough start injury-wise and made only six appearances. It’s time for another little wander down Cut Throat Lane and we are going back 30 years to this day in 1992 and the fabulous season which ultimately ended in heartbreak at Filbert Street. The Mariners from Blundell Park were our visitors that afternoon. We were in the grips of cup fever having knocked out Coventry City in a Third Round replay during in front of 9,876. Glenn Hoddle’s Swindon Town were due up next at the Abbey a week later. Let’s hope this year’s run fares better as we were well beaten by Swindon 3-0. The programme that day was the standard
1991-92 fare with Fujitsu plastered all over it. The match sponsors that day were Sauciers Hi-Fi, based in Market Street. Does anybody remember them? The player sponsorship page is interesting as one outfit - Hi Q International - appear to be sponsoring absolutely nobody! The Grimsby line up contains some familiar names, not least ‘keeper Steve Sherwood. Famous for his Wembley final appearance in 1984 for Watford when he was bullied rather by one Andy Gray. Shockingly, no red socks for the Mariners in 1991-92. Sanity did not in fact return until 2004, although red flecks did attempt a return in the intervening years. In ‘Around the ground’, the roster of live bands appearing in the Supporters’ Club made me chuckle. They are probably still there to this day! I suppose I must mention the result that day – 0-1 to the visitors in front of nearly 6,100 fans. Enjoy the game. ■

HotOurOff the Habbin Day Out on the Toon - Andrew Stephen
“It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging.” Sir Bobby Robson Standing in Row W at the top of the massive away stand at St James’ Park, I found my mind travelling back across the years. This may have been partly down to oxygen deprivation, having climbed sixteen flights of stairs before heading to my position just underneath the roof. Truthfully, though, I think that it was more to do with the astonishing spectacle and the noise created by the 5,000 Cambridge United fans determined to enjoy the occasion and to show their love and support for our team. It made me feel strangely emotional. I thought of a time when, as an impressionable teenager who went to Boarding School in King’s Lynn, I would often stay for the weekend at my Nana’s house, on Fairfax Road in Cambridge where, on a winter’s afternoon I could see the bright floodlights light up the black sky from my bedroom window. Sure enough, one night, she and her next door neighbour Mrs Brown, who ran the Tea Bar on the Habbin, took me to a home game against Cambridge City, which we
lost. This was only months after England’s only world cup final victory but there was no trace of glamour as we crossed Coldham’s Common and fought our undignified way past the cows milling for shelter under the railway bridge. I have always loved night games and, without realising it, I had begun a lifetime’s devotion to Cambridge United. Real fans understand that you don’t pick a football team, it has an uncanny way of choosing you. It’s to do with family, inheritance, where you come from and things you can’t fight against. Much of my adolescence was spent watching games in the Southern League as we gradually became the team that everyone needed to beat. We bought up a third of the Chelmsford City team. We had Rodney Slack and Ian Hutchinson. George Harris was incredibly skilful and Gerry Baker and Robin Hardy were imperious in defence. How many wonderful memories have there been since? We were promoted and relegated more than anyone else. We reached the Second Division where John Docherty kept us for a while, despite having to sell his best players because the league changed the rules about gate receipts. A sign of things to come. This included Alan Biley, the best player I have seen in a United shirt. After that a long decline was ended by John Beck who took us to the verge of the Premier League for what was to be its inaugural season. We had Dion, Shaggy, Claridge, Chapple, Daish and Vaughn - then in easily our best ever side. We frightened the life out the so called big teams and reached two FA Quarter Finals before the bubble inevitably burst again. It is an unending cycle of fortune. Eventually we ended up out of the league, almost bankrupt and two of the directors charged with running the club sold the ground to themselves. At times like that you realise what your team www.cambridge-united.co.uk
17
means to you. I saw grown men crying their eyes out in the Main Stand as the dream seemed to have come to an end. It couldn’t. We would have watched a phoenix club at any level, knowing that one day we would be back. I quite enjoyed the trips to Eastbourne, Droylsden and St Albans, got over the despair of two play-off finals and believing despite being humiliated by Histon and by Hayes and Yeading that the good times would come back. Fans live in that belief. We beat Gosport Borough in a practice match and as we settled in our seats for our play-off final against Gateshead, I thought of sitting with Nana and my Mum next to one of the twin towers at the real Wembley. This was before the first ever promotion final when we defeated Chesterfield. I had the pleasure of travelling back to Nottingham on a coach full of Chesterfield fans, trying not to let my delight show too much. We had had to more or less carry my Nana up the steep steps into Wembley but she was determined not to miss the experience. None of us had ever
18
CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V DONCASTER ROVERS F.C.
dreamed that we would see our team play on the hallowed turf and we knew that we would never forget it. After the change from 2 to 3 points for a win, Nana campaigned relentlessly for the return of our signature victory tune, “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts.” Long into old age, she would declare that Willy Watson was her hero. My mum joined the Vice President’s Club and still watches games as she approaches her 90th birthday. This is an important facet of our experience because it is something that the suits will never understand, which is that days at Wembley, acts of giant killing and the joys of promotion are nothing to do with profit or loss. They are much more to do with the morale of entire communities. Each club has its own family of long term supporters and football belongs to them. Mega rich owners, TV Executives and Directors who wantonly strip the assets from the clubs they supposedly care about, exercise a completely disproportionate and crippling on a game loved by millions who are never involved with the sordid politics which go on behind the bike sheds. And so, those moments at Newcastle. None of us really expected to win. We just wanted to be there, to bear witness and to give a good account of ourselves. More than anything I was glad to share the moment with my sons and the thousands of “ordinary” fans who had made the incredibly long journey. Newcastle had chances. They were nervous and snatched at them. Mitov was inspired. We might have had a penalty. We were too far away to be certain but all 5,000 of us demanded justice. We grew nervous as half-time approached. Newcastle were dominating and we were hanging on. My lads went below to get us beer. They were nervous. If we can just get to half-time I thought. In the second half it seemed that the wealthiest club in the world were running short of ideas. Kieran Trippier was anonymous. Our opponents were fast and tricky but lacked the sense of unity and purpose so evident in the U’s. The invisible link between us and our team seemed to grow stronger. The din was deafening, defiant and magnificent. We couldn’t hear the home support and then we scored. The concrete below us shook and for a few moments everything seemed blurred and
in slow motion. Of course there had to be a VAR check. It went on for so long that we all feared the worst. When the goal was given, the roar was even louder than the first and louder than anything I have ever heard before. There was half an hour to go. Surely we couldn’t hang on for that long? Strangely, time passed fairly quickly until time added on approached. Our players were more confident now, running with the ball and passing with greater precision. We might even have had a second. Hoolahan had continued where the hugely talented Worman had left off. Our emergency centre-half pairing had grown more and more assured and we looked capable of a sudden deadly counter attack. Newcastle were wary. After 90 minutes, we began to think that an incredible victory was possible after all. For me this was the most nervous I felt all afternoon. Mitov’s incredible save from Joelinton sealed Newcastle’s fate. At last the whistle went, flares were let off and all round bedlam ensued. The home support disappeared within seconds and we were left to celebrate with the players in a deafening cacophony, which those of us who were there will never forget. The noise followed us into the city centre where many of us, having opted to stay for the night, celebrated with a glass or two. Cambridge fans were everywhere and our
colours could be seen on every street and in every bar between the ground and the Quayside. The Geordies were remarkably generous in defeat. Many of them shook our hands and wished us luck. They knew what it meant to us. If only all rival fans were like this. Finally, having decided to start our long walk uphill on Westgate, we bumped into Mick George in Brew Dog. He was as impressed with both sets of fans, as I was. My story, such as it is, is a way of underlining just why we desperately needed the Fan Lead Review and why we all need to see it acted upon. Its object is greater fairness, a more equitable distribution of wealth, stricter controls on wannabee owners and a real voice for fans in the clubs they support and define. The future of the game depends on taking care of the things that matter; fans, genuine competition and the grassroots. It will be generations of fans who talk about memories like our FA Cup win in Newcastle, matching wealth with vision and endeavour. Such memories form part of the legitimate hopes of all fans. It what we understand and admire about each other. Every dog should have its day and that is not because of pundits, speculators or faceless bureaucrats. It is because of the thousands of fans who, year after year, grace grounds like the Abbey and who dare to dream. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Hamer, John Brayford and Jonny Smith heaped havoc to move the consistent Brewers to 12th and consign the Gills to 23rd – 11 games without maximum points. Chuks Aneke marked his Charlton Athletic return with a goal at the death to grab a 1-1 share of the spoils against Cheltenham Town. Dan Nlundulu, on loan from Southampton, had looked to have been enough to seal victory for the hosts, but it wasn’t to be with the Robins in 13th and the Addicks just behind as their winless runs frustratingly continue. Shrewsbury Town find themselves five unbeaten after they battled to a stalemate against Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road. A point apiece puts the Shrews in 15th and one of three sides on 30 points, with the Railwaymen down in 22nd albeit a

Resolute defensively, the U’s bided their time before punishing through Joe Ironside in stoppage time to leapfrog the Imps to 16th. In a dogfight near the bottom of the division, AFC Wimbledon shared a tight 0-0 draw with Morecambe at Plough Lane. Now winless in four, the Dons are allocated in 20th, two points ahead of their opponents but do obtain an essential couple of games in hand. One win in eight, the Shrimps need to be ready to roll their sleeves up ahead of some tricky fixtures. ■ Owen Mizon

The U’s made it three wins from three on Saturday with a spirited last-minute win at Lincoln City. After a difficult first half which saw United under the cosh, Mark Bonner’s men grew into the game on his 100th game in charge before taking home all three points thanks to Joe Ironside’s 13th goal of the season at the death.

Community Trust update
Cambridge United Community Trust (CUCT) and Abbey People partnered together to deliver Christmas hampers in Abbey last month with support from Cambridge Fans United. Ian Darler and Cambridge Charity Fundraisers also supported this community effort providing further meal packages and gifts for local families. We received a fantastic response from members of the community and fans volunteering their time to support the deliveries and they donated many wonderful items towards the hampers.
In total, an incredible 438 people across 190 households in East Barnwell were supported over the Christmas period. Participants across our Forever United programme, including many senior Season Ticket holders, received a range of great CUFC items from the club shop, and the highly-anticipated Christmas themed activity pack! Forever United is an initiative run by the Cambridge United Community Trust to support seniors and there are so many opportunities to get involved: whether that’s our Wellbeing Walks, Seniors’ Lunches or Dementia Sports Cafes. Alongside this in December, the Year 2’s at our closest primary school, The Galfrid School, wrote a letter to Marvin the Moose. The class then went to deliver it to him at the Abbey Stadium and had a fantastic time meeting him after being taken on a tour of the ground by
Ashley Dyer, the Community Trust’s Education & Skills Manager. We use sport & football as a non-traditional educational tool for those that might otherwise be struggling to engage in schools, and we were delighted to support the Galfrid students as they worked on their letterwriting skills. ■

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman What a day we all had at Newcastle last Saturday week. There is nothing quite like football for creating memories that last a lifetime, with the 5,000 supporters, plus players, coaching staff, club officials and us, the media, brought together to enjoy an unforgettable afternoon, in what was an intoxicating atmosphere at St James Park, both during the game and throughout the celebrations after the final whistle. The latter triggering scenes that can and never should be erased from our minds. Those not fortunate enough to be at the game, whether back in Cambridge, elsewhere in the UK or overseas also shared the joy post-match, with videos and pictures dominating social media, within seconds of the final whistle and for days after, which hopefully made up in its own small way, for not being in the North-East that afternoon.
“On the pitch, I thought the U’s were magnificent at St James’, with their performance underlining all the qualities that have become a hallmark of Mark Bonner’s stewardship” There are very few days in the U’s history which compare. Obviously the two Play-off Final successes in 1990 and 2014 are forever etched in the memory, whilst in cup competition, the 4-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday in 1991, the win against top-flight Millwall as a fourth-tier side in 1990, the quarter-final at Arsenal, also 1991, along with the two matches with Manchester United in 2015. Older fans will also point to the FA Cup victory over Newport in 1953; the club’s first ever against Football League opposition, when they were still an Eastern Counties League outfit.
On the pitch, I thought the U’s were magnificent at St James’, with their performance underlining all the qualities that have become a hallmark of Mark Bonner’s stewardship. Resilience, discipline, team spirit, a huge dose of commitment to the cause and quality all over the park, against a Premier League side costing millions. It has also been encouraging to see the U’s display good mental strength, by enjoying their moment in the spotlight - which of course they should - then switching straight back on to record a win over Portsmouth just three days later, then again at in-form Lincoln on Saturday, courtesy of Joe’s dramatic late winner. A characteristic that should not be underestimated. It’s a good time to be a U’s fan. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

Women Darren Marjoram After all the highs of recent games, it’s another test in the league tonight against Doncaster and another opportunity for three valuable points. On behalf of everyone connected with the Women’s team, we wish Mark and the team the very best of luck. The Women’s team have enjoyed the winter league break over Christmas and then unfortunately had the eagerly anticipated game against Enfield postponed due to a waterlogged pitch on the first scheduled week of action in the New Year. It was disappointing, firstly because we had prepared well and were looking forward to the game, but also because we have been
very busy in the winter break, resulting in three new signings. Firstly, we have signed holding midfielder Rachel Kosky from Enfield, who has been one of their stand out players for some time. This is a big piece of the jigsaw that we have been looking to fill since Gisela Otten moved to centre back and I am delighted we now have Kosky on board. The next two players are ones who are returning to the Club. First we have striker Nicole Emmings who signs from Stevenage. Coley was with us a few seasons ago and had her best season in front of goal during that time. She knows how to find the net and will be an extremely valuable addition to our attacking options.

Finally, we have re-signed Amber Cantwell, who is an attacking midfield player with lots of pace and flair. Amber is well known to those who have followed the team in recent seasons and will provide competition for the creative heart of the team. We welcome all three players to the Club. The signing of these three players demonstrates the ambition we have to keep pushing forward and shows what an exciting time it is to be a U’s fan in every aspect! We have lots of exciting fixtures coming up, so we all hope to see a few new fans along to support, especially as Season Ticket Holders at the Abbey enjoy free admission. Enjoy the game and let’s get behind the lads! ■

CFU Corner CFU Appeal to Members
Dear Fan, We at CFU would like to urge you to support the Fans Led Review and to write to your MP asking them to show their support for the report by writing to Nadine Dorries, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. It is easy enough to read the full report online but it is particularly important to read the section on Diversity. Sections 7 and 8, which follow this, are particularly important for all supporters as they give a clear idea as to how fully involved they could be in the running of clubs in the future. Most MPs will support the proposals but the Government needs to hear from elected representatives from all over the country. We have seen manifesto promises “forgotten” before and our political leaders need to be reminded just how much our game matters to us and how strongly we feel about the hijacking of it by media moguls and investors people who don’t have the best interests of the sport at heart. Most MPs don’t like template or automatically generated emails, so try to make yours personal: 1 How long have you been a Cambridge United fan and what does your club mean to you?
34
CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V DONCASTER ROVERS F.C.
2 Ask your MP to write to Nadine Dorries and ask her to call on the government to back all the recommendations of the Fan Led Review of football governance, as it said it would. 3 Football has shown itself incapable of putting its own house in order so it needs an independent regulator to make sure that it does. 4 We also need stronger and fairer financial controls, to protect our heritage from ill -conceived schemes like the European Super League. The grass roots and the future of football must be properly funded. Equality, Diversity, Fairness and Real Competition must be the central values to the way the game is run. Fans must never be faced with losing their clubs because of ego driven owners with no understanding of tradition or the aspirations of fans. Finally, supporters’ organisations like ours must be embedded in their clubs and have a real say in the way they are run. Their views must never be an afterthought. Football without fans is nothing! Thank your MP for his or her attention and remember, every single letter makes a difference! United in Endeavour. ■ Andrew Stephen, Chairman of CFU
