A WELCOME FROM
EDDIE HEARN
T
his is a great fight. You only have to listen to the fighters and the teams talk about it to know that we’re in for something special in Las Vegas. I want to know how good Devin Haney is. I believe he’s the best Lightweight in the world and this is the kind of fight that is going to show how good he is. Jorge looks tremendous, he’s had a great training camp and he’s primed to try to upset the champion. Devin has never boxed at this level before and he’s going to have to show
that he has more levels to his game. I believe he has plenty of gears to go through to prove he’s the best, and it’s a great test and platform to do so. Devin’s profile is higher than it’s ever been, and he lives in Las Vegas so this is exactly the right fight and stage for this young guy who could be the future of boxing to shine. It’s a great card from top to bottom, all the fights are fascinating with more world title action, eliminators and rising young stars, all on Matchroom’s debut in Sin City. Enjoy the show! ■

DRILL

evin Haney believes his WBC World Lightweight title defense against Jorge Linares will be a firefight – and he’s relishing that prospect as they clash on Saturday. Haney puts his title on the line for the third time against the former multiple division world champion, Linares, who is looking to regain the green and gold belt he held in 2014-15. ‘The Dream’ expects the best of the 35 year old and that ‘El Nino’ has plenty of tools in his shed to call upon, and while that makes him an unpredictable foe, Haney says he is the man that it’s impossible to prepare for thanks to his ability to adapt to any challenge. “I am expecting a firefight and I can’t wait,” said Haney. “We don’t know what Jorge will turn up, but I am ready for anything, and I can’t wait to show it. “Jorge brings so much to the table. Speed, power, ring IQ, experience against the best of the best, and I think he’s the type of opponent that will bring the best out of me, make me bring out my A-game, take it to the next level, the elite level. “People think he will have success, some think he will even win the fight, and that’s why it will show that I am elite and one of the best, if not the best, in the world. “Every day, my dad and I get to know each other more and more. This camp has been great and we’re both ready for this one night to show everything we have been working on. “You can’t train for me, because you don’t know what style I am going to bring. I’ve learned so many different styles and I can adjust, and that’s the difference between me and a lot of other fighters. “If you look at history, you can say there always comes a young fighter fighting an older fighter that has more

“I’M GOING TO KEEP BEATING WHOEVER IS PUT IN FRONT OF ME” experience and has been in more big fights, the younger guy beats him and moves on to bigger and better things, and the older fighter goes in his direction, retires or whatever the case may be. So, he can say he has more experience than me, but this is my time now, his time has been and gone and on May 29, he will see. “I will be fighting the rest of my career trying to earn some people’s respect, and they are either going to respect me or not at the end of the day. I’m going to keep beating whoever is put in front of me, one by one they will be lined up and I will keep knocking them down no matter who it is. “I don’t need to get respect from people that at the end of the day don’t matter to me. They will have something to say no matter what, whether it’s that someone is better than me, the last opponent, there’s always another test, and I don’t pay any attention”. ■

orge Linares has warned Devin Haney that he is stepping up to a whole new level as he prepares to challenge the WBC World Lightweight champion on Saturday. Former three-weight world king Linares is looking to kickstart the latest chapter of his storied career by picking up the WBC belt that he owned in 2014 to 2016 from Haney. The 22 year old champion has admitted that the Venezuelan star is the toughest fight of his career and has vowed to prove that he’s the man to beat at 135lbs, but ‘El Nino de Oro’ believes that he has the goods to end the rising star’s title reign and return to the summit in Las Vegas. “It’s a big fight and a new challenge for me,” said Linares. “I have a lot of respect for Devin. He’s a young guy, a World champion, but on Saturday the respect goes, and I am ready for an amazing fight, and I hope he’s ready too. He knows who he is fighting - a four-time World champion. I have a lot of experience and that’s the most important thing in this fight to win the fight. He doesn’t have that. He has talent, he has youth and hunger, and the belt. “A fight with me is a different level. I can show so many styles, I’m naturally fast and strong, I don’t have a lot of KOs, but he knows I can punch. I think he will run all night, but I will be waiting for him, I will follow him. If he wants to fight inside, I am ready for him. He’s going to have big problems on Saturday night, he knows I can do everything, and he knows I have the timing to put him down. “I know his style, I trained with him a long time ago in Vegas and we did some sparring. He was a baby then! But he’s a champion now and I hope he’s ready for a tough fight.

“I don’t need to say anything about what he’s said. I just think about myself and what I need to do, not what he says or does. I don’t like to talk too much, I don’t need to talk to get fans or followers or anything, I just need to go out and do my job and put on a great fight. “I am surprised at myself. I am honest myself, if I don’t think I can win, I would have retired - I know I can win this fight, I feel better than I did five or six years ago, better than when I beat Anthony Crolla or Kevin Mitchell, better than in the Vasiliy Lomachenko fight, I am more focused, more experienced and experience of the highs and lows, that balance. That’s why I have hunger to become champion again, the support from my family and from fans all over the world and I love this feeling, the champion feeling. “I hope he has had the best training camp in his life, he knows that he cannot fight with Gamboa because if he fights like he did there, I will beat him. He cannot change much in three or four months, but I hope he wants to show that he’s the best. “This is the most important fight of my life. I’ve been World champion and defended the title many times, but this is a new challenge, and it might be my last chance, because at Lightweight, it’s very hard to get opportunities. “I need to be a champion again but there’s a lot of talent at 135lbs and with COVID, chances are hard to come by and you lose a lot of time, so I made sure I was ready, and I need to take this chance right now because I don’t need to be fighting when I am 40.” ■

hantelle Cameron is itching to make the first defense of her WBC World Light-Welterweight title against Michelle Hernandez – and wants to show she will relish being a World ruler. Cameron landed the vacant WBC strap with a shut-out win over Ariana dos Santos Araujo in Milton Keynes, England in October, but her first defense against Hernandez proposed for March had to be postponed through an injury to the Briton after she got whiplash from a car crash. The pair now get it on in front of fans in Las Vegas, and that’s exactly the type of stage that the 30 year old wants to be spotlighted on, and for Cameron, holding the green and gold belt means other fighters are calling her out – and that’s a position ‘Il Capo’ is delighted to be in. “I feel good being the target,” said Cameron. “It’s better than doing the chasing, that’s frustrating, you are just trying to get the fights and a title shot, so now I know I am going to get fights because people want my belt. “Being World champion has not really sunk in yet, and nothing has changed because it’s been so long since I won the fight, and I haven’t been able to

defend it yet. So, I don’t think it’ll really feel it will sink in until I win more belts, but I still feel the same, still have the same drive, the same hunger, and now I am a target. I used to have to chase people for fights but now I have the green and gold belt, I am the target. “The best of me is yet to come, the fight hasn’t come where I get to show that. I boxed to my game plan to win the belt and did what I had to do and what my coaches told me. She is a big puncher so I knew I didn’t want to be taking risks and getting involved with someone that could put me on my backside. When I do get the fight that shows what I can really do, I think people will acknowledge me more. “Everyone is so desperate to stay undefeated, but this is a sport, we all have to climb the ladder and if you are that good, then box anyone - that’s my mentality. If I become undisputed and someone is

Obviously, I didn’t want to be in a car crash, but I was sort of like, thank god it did happen, I’m off to Vegas! It was a rubbish time, but I hope it’s going to lead to one of the best times of my life. When you see people fight in Vegas you think ‘they are doing alright for themselves’ and I never really thought that it would be me, so I am so excited because I think the Americans will like my style.” ■

elissa Hernandez is back in the big time in boxing and wants to take the WBC World Super-Lightweight title from defending champion Chantelle Cameron to land the super fights. Melissa Hernandez, a Miami Beach resident, won six world titles and in 2016 hung up the gloves due to her frustration with the inequality in pay in comparison to male boxers. She never lost her love of pugilism and continued to train without knowing what fate was going to bring. Things have changed a lot since then and Hernandez returned to the ring in 2019 and shocked undefeated Selina Barrios, who is the sister of champion Mario Barrios. Now, ‘Huracan Shark’ is back on the World title trail some nine years after she last topped the world, and after a feisty build up with Cameron, the Puerto Rican wants to rip the green and gold belt from the Brit and then hunt down a clash with Katie Taylor. “Expect fireworks,” said Hernandez. “Women’s boxing is back to stay; I was one of the pioneers and I’m here to prove that I still have it and pay homage to all the women that came before me. “We busted our asses for so long to finally be on these huge cards and to be getting paid more than we used to. I heard what I heard, at the end of the day, the fight is happening. I’m happy I had that extra time to train because she’s a badass, I’m here to prove that I’m a little bit more of a badass. “I’m confident I’ll beat her. She’s tall, she fights hard, she moves well, and she throws her punches very fast, but I’m 20 years old in that sport, I have the experience and I’m going to box her. It’s a big challenge for me, let’s see what I can do with it. “The goal is to face undisputed champion Katie Taylor. That’s where I’m going to make a lot of money. “I watched boxers make millions, my reference was Floyd Mayweather Jr. and I was sure that with the qualities I had I was also going to be a millionaire. ason Quigley says victory over Shane Mosley Jr would be the start of the second phase of his career as they clash in a crunch Middleweight showdown. The Irish amateur star was progressing smoothly in the paid ranks at 16-0 until he ran into Tureano Johnson in California in July 2019, with the Bahamanian forcing him to retire after nine of their ten round clash for Quigley’s WBC NABF title. Quigley has bounced back with a pair of west coast wins since that blip, and now the 30 year old views his third fight in Las Vegas as the most important in his career as chapter two begins in Sin City. “This is a massive opportunity, big stage, capital of professional boxing here in Las Vegas. It’s a great platform for us to get on the stage, showcase our skills and give our absolute best come fight night. “Once that bell rings there’s always going to be fireworks., especially with a great fight like this on the line. We both know what this fight means to us, we both know where this fight can put us in our careers. You can definitely expect fireworks come fight night. “There’s no excuses against Tureano. I wasn’t sick, I wasn’t injured, I was beat fair and square on the night but – at the same time - that wasn’t me,”.

“If I had gone in there and given it my all, my absolute very best and got beat I think I would have been more upset because where would I have to go from there? But I know that wasn’t the best I could give and that’s what gave me the confidence and desire to keep going. I know there is a lot more in me, there’s a lot more in the tank and I believe that’s starting to come out now. “Mosley is a good fighter, he comes from good genes. He has a lot about him, he’s going to come very hungry, very determined and he’s definitely going to come to win and that’s what makes this fight so exciting for me. I know that I have a lad who is up for this – he’s getting in there and we both know where this fight can lead for us and there’s no question in my mind that I’m going to get in there, take care of business and move on from this,”. “This is my second career now and it has kind of hit me that this is the stage I’m at. You get to this stage where fights are very important and this fight is very, very important for me now and my career. I know what it means to get in and win this fight and that’s why I have left no stone unturned – I’ve done everything the best that I possibly could do and that’s not going to change come fight night.” ■

hane Mosley Jr. has been hungry for a big fight and can put his charge to title level into top gear with victory over Golden Boy Promotions stablemate Jason Quigley. Son of former pound-for-pound king ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, the ‘Sugarman’ is unbeaten in his last four fights since losing out to Brandon Adams over ten rounds in the final of the fifth ‘Contender’ series in November 2018. The 30 year old was due to fight Quigley in both January and February, but both times the fight fell through. Mosley Jr was able to get a fifth round win against Cristian Olivas on the February date in California to sharpen his tools for a crunch night for his career tonight. “I wasn’t really sure about the possibility of the fight still happening after it was originally cancelled,” said Mosley Jr. “I just knew that I had to stay ready and sharp. In this game, you have to be ready. I’m happy and blessed to have this opportunity to fight for a belt. “This fight is definitely a step up for me. Jason is probably one of the best fighters I have faced thus far. I am grateful for the opportunity and challenge. I just want to display the best version of myself and show people that I am ready for a title shot. “I don’t have any regrets as you have to take everything in your stride. You

Sometimes, people go straight from high school to college and then to a doctorate. Sometimes people take their time and there are bumps in the road. If the end result is that both ways lead to a doctorate, then its congratulations, you got it. I think the bumps on the road have made me a better man, fighter and hopefully they show in the ring. “Fans should expect a great fight! It’s one of those classic matchups of boxer against puncher. I lean more towards being a boxer while it looks like he is more of a puncher who comes forward. Usually that style matchup makes for a great fight, so I think the fans are in for a treat and I’m going to show the world why I belong.” ■

artin J. Ward thinks he has all the answers for the dangerous Azinga Fuzile as he prepares to meet the South African in Las Vegas in a final eliminator for the IBF World SuperFeatherweight title. Ward fulfills a childhood dream making his American debut in the bright lights of Sin City, but the Briton will not let the glitz and glamour distract him from taking a massive step in becoming a World champion. The 29 year old knows that Fuzile presents a dangerous obstacle to that dream, but the Tony Sims trained talent is not fazed by having to face a southpaw to land a World title shot, and wants to emulate the impact that one of his heroes, Prince Naseem Hamed, had when he would wow crowds in America. “I was a big Naz fan and stayed up to watch him fight Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas and in all his fights all over the States,” said Ward. “It has been a childhood dream of mine to fight in Vegas on the big stage, and here it is, and I am not going to let this slip through my fingers, I’ve trained too hard and put too much of my life into this to let it go. “Motivation has not been an issue at all in this camp, I’ve been training so hard, and I’ve been flying, smashing it in the gym and on the track, it’s all coming together at the right time and I’m just so excited. Over the last year there have been a few opportunities that have come up, so I didn’t want to get too excited as a couple of them fell through and I had started to get my weight down for them. I was champing at the bit for them, so it was frustrating, so I took this one with a pinch of salt really, I just wanted a date to be sorted, and when it was cemented in place it was great.

He looks a good fighter, and hopefully our styles will gel, and we’ll put on a good fight for the fans. I haven’t fought in over a year, but it’s been over 18 months for him, but it depends how you live outside the gym, I live the life, I keep a healthy lifestyle and training makes me happy, it’s part of me. “He’s elusive, sharp, counters well and has good defense with the shoulder roll, but I am going to nullify all that and take him out of his comfort zone and do a job on him. I’ll be too smart, and I think I’ll be too big and strong for the guy. I’m so close to where I want to be.” ■

zinga Fuzile gets a second chance at an IBF World Super-Featherweight title eliminator against Martin J. Ward – and says that this time he will rubberstamp his shot at the big one. Fuzile faced Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov for a shot at the IBF belt on his East London, South Africa home turf in September 2019, and was handed a first career loss by the Russian by eighth round stoppage. Rakhimov went on to face JoJo Diaz for the title in a fight that ended in a draw, and Rakhimov will now face Kenichi Ogawa for the crown in the summer – with tonight’s winner to be installed as the mandatory for the winner of that fight. ‘Golden Boy’ has not fought since that loss but he’s confident that the lessons he’s learned from that night will be enough to triumph over the Briton, who has yet to taste action at this level. “I’m excited to be here, it’s my dream to fight in Las Vegas,” said Fuzile. “I used to watch the fights from Las Vegas when I was a child so to be fighting here is a dream come true. “Martin is a good fighter, I take nothing away from him, but I am also good. I have fought for an eliminator before and this is his first time in a fight this big, and I know how he is feeling now because that was a big fight for me too. Unfortunately, I lost that fight, but I learned a lot from that defeat, and now I have to teach him what it’s like on the big stage like this. “The defeat was hard to take but it made me realize that I am not the only fighter with

The stage was so big for me at the time, I was winning all the rounds but in the 8th round I was caught and that’s what can happen at that level. I will correct the mistakes I made that night in Las Vegas. “The time out of the ring hasn’t helped because I would have liked some fights in between that one and this fight, but it doesn’t matter, there’s no other fight out there for me so here we are. He doesn’t know me, we will see on the night, it’s easy to talk, but you have to prove it inside the ring. I have everything I need to win this fight; skill, power, it’s all there, I’ve watched him, and I know how to beat him. “It’s a second chance for me and it means a lot, I have to take this opportunity and I want to fight Rakhimov for the World title because I want to correct that loss.” ■

halil Coe believes he’s going to be the latest star to come out of New Jersey as he begins his pro journey in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Coe enters the paid ranks on the back of a promising time with Team USA and hit the headlines when he knocked out Cuba’s 2016 Olympic gold medal man Julio Cesar La Cruz in June 2018 on his first international assignment. The Jersey City talent will debut at LightHeavyweight in Sin City on Saturday night with a view to moving down to 168lbs, and the rising star wants to become a new fight figure for his city and show that there is a lot more to him than just his win over La Cruz. “Where I am from, Jersey City, you couldn’t go outside unless you could fight,” said Coe. “People would take stuff from you, so you have to be able to hold your own. “I love my city, it is crazy but I wouldn’t want to be from anywhere else. It made me who I am, it’s made me strong, that’s how I am able to get in the ring and do what I do, it’s the struggle that drove me and I don’t want to go back to where I started. They are trying to get me to where I am going – I love my people for that and I want to make them proud. “My Mom put me in boxing. I was fighting on the streets and in school, I was getting in trouble so my Mom did it to humble me really. I got into the gym, and I smelt the leather, the bags, everything, and I haven’t looked back since.

We set up a meeting in New York with Eddie Hearn and I told him, I will put on a show for him. “The Olympic committee is a hard process, I had to keep qualifying and solidify my spot, so personally I thought that they probably had someone already lined up that they wanted to go instead of me. I just felt that I was ready for the change, and it was my time. “People started to take an interest in me after I knocked the Cuban out. Every time he posts something, someone tags me! We are connected for life now. But I am not just the Cuban killer, I want to show I don’t just have KO power – I will show that I can box, have good footwork, I’m slick; we’re at a different level now and we’re taking it up.” ■

eshat Mati moves into double figures tonight against Ryan Pino – and is ready to kick-on and rise up the Super-Lightweight rankings. Mati has been impressive in his nine pro-outings to date since debut in October 2018, ending seven of those contests inside the distance. The ‘Albanian Bear’ is now looking to get down to 140lbs after campaigning at Welterweight so far, and the New York talent believes he can rise to contender status quickly if he can remain active. “I’m looking to be active as much as possible,” said Mati. “I’m looking for big fights, to get my name out there. Eddie Hearn told me to go down to 140lbs, we ventured slowly, worked our way down and make a big impact. “I’ve learned just to stay calm. In the amateurs it’s three rounds, it’s quick. The main thing is to stay loose, listen to your coaches and stay active as much as possible. It’s better to stay active because the times you have off tests you to how you come back to those adversities. First I’ve got to deal with this guy Saturday and then work our way to the next fight. “It’s great to be into double figures now. I want to move up in terms of the quality of opponents, move up the rankings and start to really test myself, because that’s what I am in the sport for, the belts and the legacy. “I have had a couple of fighters pull out of this fight and Ryan has taken it late notice, which I am grateful for. He’s a tall dude, he’s long and he’s tough so we just have to figure him out, listen to my coaches and get the job done. “Every fight is an opportunity for me to make a statement, whether it is at 147lbs or 140lbs. We are working our way down to 140 and I think that’s the weight for me. I just have to watch what I eat! I am always in the gym working, and I stay ready, so I want to stay busy and racking up the wins.” ■

amla Ali is thrilled to be making her American debut in Las Vegas – but will not be rushed into taking big fights as she plots her route to the top, starting with her third pro fight this weekend. Ali turned pro in October with victory over Eva Hubmayer at Wembley Arena in London, England and added a second pro win in March over the experienced Bec Connolly in the same venue. The 31 year old is committed to being a huge hit in and out of the ring as well, but while excited to be performing in Sin City, Ali, who faces Mikayla Nebel on Saturday, knows exactly how she wants to build her career and is prepared to put in the hard yards to earn a World title. “I am so excited to be fighting in Vegas, the Mecca of boxing,” said Ali. “I actually didn’t think I’d get the opportunity to have my American debut so early on in my career, but I’m so grateful to have been given it. “Also, what a dream come true fighting on such an amazing undercard. I grew up watching Jorge Linares. What a legend. This is my second time training out here in the States and I love it because the standard of female talent out here is phenomenal. Thank you to Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith for making all this happen for me.

“I AM SO EXCITED TO BE FIGHTING IN VEGAS, THE MECCA OF BOXING” “I don’t want to make a mockery of the sport and have a World title after just five fights. If I am ready and I feel like I can, great, but I don’t want to be rushed and I would like to take my time. You get in the ring because you want to be the best so of course, I know I am going to be a World champion one day, but I want to do it at my own speed and knowing that I have fully achieved it and deserved to have the opportunity. “I was still annoyed by the ref giving one of the rounds a draw against Bec, that baffled me, especially after he said he should have stopped the fight in the third round. But all the respect in the world to Bec, she’s a tough girl who has been around for a long time, and she kindly stepped in late which is great. “I gave away about half a stone and I felt it, she’s a big and strong girl, but I stuck to my game plan, kept it long and used my footwork to stay out of range.” ■
