STEVE EVANS
All I can ask our supporters is to back a squad who really, really care
CHAIRMAN PHIL WALLACE
Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Bolton Wanderers FC.
Coming into the Easter holidays one point off the League One play offs is a situation not many could have envisaged a couple of years ago - and to host a Club with such a famous heritage as Bolton Wanderers in the first of our Easter games is a privilege. We love having famous clubs visit The Lamex but, in our newly transformed approach, we fear no one and will fiercely compete with anyone. I’m certain not many clubs look forward to playing us, especially on our home turf.
Our results over the last few months haven’t been what we wanted or expected, but success in a season rarely happens in straight lines. We have a chance to kick on now with two great games over this Easter period. Six points could make it a very interesting final month of the season!
Our town is growing, our club is growing and our support is growing. We appreciate your support so much and our lads will give everything to secure a play-off place. Let’s get behind the boys today and let’s hear your noise!
Enjoy the game

I am sure everyone that’s involved in Stevenage FC would join me in wishing Betty Vale, a stalwart of the club for over 40 years a very special and wonderful 90th Birthday on March 27th. Her late husband Ken was a past Chairman who help guide the club through some difficult times in the 80s and 90s with indeed the whole support of Betty and her family too. Betty washed the kit after every match for many years and her family recall it drying on every radiator on the house every Sunday. Her children and grandchildren supported her in running the refreshment kiosk too for every home game, one of them standing on a box to reach the counter!
Betty still enjoys coming to the home games with one of her family and grandchildren but is pleased she doesn’t have to wash the kit anymore. She talks very fondly of that special time in such a friendly family orientated club that still, despite our considerable success since then is at the heart of what makes our club so special. Congratulations Betty.

Match ACTION
It’s time to welcome our mascots once again as we trust they have a great Good Friday with us and see the Boro take another big step to the play-offs.
First we say hello to Harry Reeve, 8, who lives in Stevenage and attends Fairlands Primary. Harry enjoys playing football and Dan Sweeney is his favourite Boro star.
Next we welcome Alex Spruce, 9, who lives in Welwyn GC. Alex enjoys playing football and being a Boro fan is his big hobby, with Jamie Reid being his top star. Amber Hackett, 12, is out next mascot. Amber attends Linslade Middle School and her hobbies
It’s a warm welcome to Bolton, but what do you know about the Trotters, SPONSORED BY
are Scooter, playing football and watching Boro home and away. Her favourite player is Jamie Reid.
Our fourth mascot is Isaac Mills 5, who lives in Stevenage and attends Weston Primary. Issac enjoys football, cricket and most sports and Jamie Reid is his top Boro man. Last, but by no means least, we welcome Reggie Mitchell, 12, who lives in Stevenage and attends John Henry Newman School. Reggie loves football and futsal and Jamie Reid is his favourite Boro player.
We trust all our mascots have a great day with us and that they cheer Boro on to victory.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
Oxford United were seeking to repair the damage dealt to them a month prior to the game by the FA, The U’s were handed a five-point deduction for fielding ineligible players. The deduction had only inspired Boro’s play-off push further, with this game wielding the potential to widen a gap between the two sides.
Oxford United’s away support only had their spirits dampened 23 minutes into this crunch clash as defender, Damian Batt, hauled down Mitchell Cole, just as the Stevenage man was bearing down on goal. The cynical foul was punished accordingly as referee James Adcock brandished a red card.
It took Boro until just after half time to capitalise upon their man advantage. Steve Morrison

worked his way in behind the depleted visitors and slid the ball across the six-yard box where an on running David Bridges arrived to tap the ball home giving Stevenage the lead. However, only fifteen minutes after taking the lead, Mitchell Cole, who’s run had drawn a red card from Oxford in the early stages of the game, made a calamitous mistake himself. The midfielder recklessly slid in for the ball, missing it completely, instead taking Oxford United player, Adam Chapman, clean off his feet.
U’s striker, James Constable, converted the resulting penalty, albeit unconvincingly as the effort somehow squirmed through Boro ‘keeper, Chris Day, hands.
Stevenage couldn’t find a reply to the visitor’s equaliser and settled for the 1-1 draw, stretching Boro’s unbeaten run to an outstanding 22 games, the run would stop at two games later, setting a new club record.

BORO HISTORY
ON THIS DAY: 29 MARCH
If we take the pure numbers, 29 March has been relatively good to Boro’ over the years. Six previous outings on this date in the diary have turned in three wins, two draws, and one defeat. If you were to dig a little deeper, however, it soon throws up memories – well, one in particular – that we’d rather have banished.
That’s because for the victories we’ve recorded on 29 March, the one notable inclusion on the list from seasons gone by is the infamous meeting between ourselves and Macclesfield Town in 1997.
At the time, Boro’s cup commitments had interrupted the title defence – but had built up a little raft of games in hand. The Silkmen, meanwhile, were determined to regain their Conference crown. You can almost compare it to the Easter Mon-day epic against Woking from a season beforehand – the match had a winner-takes-all feel about it.
1986 Haringey Borough 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Armsby)
1994 Grays Athletic 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Stein, Clark)
1997 Stevenage Borough 2-3 Macclesfield Town, GM Vauxhall Conference (Catlin, Crawshaw)
2003 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Dagenham & Redbridge, Nationwide Conference (Carroll, Elding)
2013 Crawley Town 1-1 Stevenage, npower League One (Roberts; Comminges s/o)
2014 Stevenage 1-1 Port Vale, Sky Bet League One (Hartley)
So, for Boro’ to be two goals to the good and with a man advantage felt magnificent. It instilled a real feeling that we’d be able to chase
down the Silkmen at the top. Imagine our horror, then, as the guests battled back fiercely; turning the ta-bles and stealing the win. They went onto win the title and earn promotion… a real sliding doors moment perhaps?
And such was the nature of the defeat that some even choose to believe it never actually happened at all.
BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…
Gameweek 40
Our uncertain form of late means our current campaign has fallen back in comparison with previous years; a return of 62 points from 39 matches now only our joint 15th-best. It’s the same amount of points gained after 39 fixtures as we achieved in 2000-1 and 2016-7 – both of which had seen us score more times and have better goal differences. Still, it isn’t all doom and gloom. We remain three points better off now than in 2011-2 – our previous best in League One. You won’t be shocked to learn that our top five highest points hauls after 39 league fixtures have propelled us to title suc-cess – topped, obviously, by the 103 points we’d already amassed by this stage of the 1990-1 season. We’ve noted in previous weeks how our record that season was incredible. It only gets better the more games that were played! In 39 matches that campaign, we’d won 33 of them – with just four draws and two defeats. Now, that’s imperious.
For the sake of balance, the worst return we had after 39 matches of a league season was a mere two campaigns ago. At this point of the 2021-2 season, we had just 34 points to show for ourselves; something that had put us in genuine dan-ger (again) as new-boss-at-the-time Steve Evans tried to turn things around. And it’s fair to say he did. Next worst (as it were) are the 2013-4 and 2015-6 campaigns – with 38 points on the board after 39 game weeks.
IT’S BOLTON WANDERERS AGAIN…
… and, in one way, we wish it wasn’t. Three times we’ve now come up against the Trotters – and three times we have lost. Of course, it does mean that things can only get better and we hope they do sooner rather than later. In our one and only
ON BOTH SIDES…
To play today?: To the best of our knowledge, there are no representatives of either side today who has played for the other at one point. It’s not something that we tend to see happening all that often – so a bit of a rarity for you there…
Best of the Rest: We don’t have a particularly long list of players to hand for this one. In fact, you’d just get a six-a-side team out the door (with a sub). Mind you, it wouldn’t be an awful team for that version of the game. Mark Westhead in goal, John Dreyer and Chris Stokes at the back, Lawrie Wilson and Filipe Morais in midfield, and Tyler Walker up top. Morgan Bruce-deRouche is the other name, though he didn’t make too much of an impression at either.
encounter here at the Lamex, the guests roared into a two-goal first half lead. Tom Pett grabbed one back in the dying moments of the first half –but clear cut chances were few and far between in the second.

Good afternoon, good luck to The Gaffer, his coaching staff, and the players for this afternoon’s game vs Bolton Wanderers.
The Stevenage FC EDP is entering its final few months this season as the boys look to finish well and possibly win a league title this season.
The players have been excellent this season both on and off the pitch, demonstrating what it takes to represent Stevenage FC to the best of their abilities.
The programme is going from strength to strength on the pitch with players such as Kai Pitts-Lewis signing for the scholars at the start of the season and Ben Nightengale earning a scholarship elsewhere just before Christmas, as well as a number of players playing for strong local non-league sides the quality is extremely high. We have also seen Baron Cambaz our 1st year GK train regularly with the U18’s and first team. Additionally, off the pitch has seen workshops delivered by the Police and insights into how to manage money and creating
your own business has meant the boys have developed both on and off the pitch.
Having already held our October and February open days, we have been really pleased with the application and quality of the players that have attended as we look to recruit new players for next season. If you’re interested in joining or know someone interested in joining our programme, please get in contact, with our upcoming open days for next year’s cohort spanning across Monday 8th to Wednesday 10th Apil, it’s a great time to register.
If you are 16-18 years old or have a son of similar age and are interested in our programme, please come and check us out at the Hertfordshire FA County Ground for our Easter open days or alternatively contact myself on joshc@ stevenagefc.com
Enjoy the game and Up The Boro!

STEVENAGE FC WOMEN
Good afternoon, ‘Boro fans and a very Happy Easter!
It has been a quiet couple of weeks for the women’s team with no fixtures scheduled for the First Team, following our disappointing exit from the League Cup earlier in the month. We now face our final push in the home straight of the season as we look to get as many points on the board between now and the start of May.
We host Luton Town this Sunday (31 March) at the Herts FA County Ground for a 2pm kick off. This will be sure to be a hotly contested fixture and we would love all your support against a local rival. Please remember that men’s season ticket holders get free entry to all our home league games – come down, cheer us on before you tuck into your Easter Sunday lunches!
The U23s Team had their County Trophy abandoned last weekend due to a medical emergency with one of our players. We pleased to confirm that our player is doing well and recovering. We would like to thank the quick actions of our team, physio and opposition players. The final has now been re-scheduled to take place on Sunday 26 May with a 10:30am kick off. Our U23s have a weekend off before they make the short trip to face Biggleswade United Ladies on Sunday 7 April as our youngsters look to put some
daylight away from the relegation zone. As always, thank you for your support. Up the ‘Boro!

Today marks the first ever Giving Day in EFL history, as we join forces with our fans and local community to show our support for Stevenage FC Foundation.
The Giving Day began at 9am on Thursday (28th), and is a 36-hour fundraising initiative, aiming to raise £20,000 to make the Foundation’s recently gifted “StreetStadia” mobile by purchasing a suitable vehicle to take it right into the heart of local communities.
The Foundation currently supports around 6,000 people a year through one of its 185 weekly sessions in Stevenage and surrounding areas. Many of those sessions take place a local venue such as community centres, schools, and sports facilities. However, in recent times the Charity has noticed that the need to take their opportunities right to people’s doorsteps in becoming increasingly important.
It is becoming more and more obvious that not everyone in our community is able to access the opportunities that we have to offer. Most of the time, we find that this is either down to them not knowing that the opportunity exists, or that it takes place once a week at a venue the other side of town or even in a different part of Hertfordshire.
As a charity, we’ve never really been one for fundraising, often sourcing a lot of the money we need to offer what we can to the local community through grant funding bids, so this is a big challenge for us, and we’re excited to see what we can achieve as a town and a community. We’ve had incredible buy-in from current and former players, the manager and Chairman have also been so supportive and contributed ideas to make the Giving Day a success.
The Giving Day has been developed in partnership with fundraising experts Buffalo, running through to 9pm on Good Friday, on a bespoke website, that also allows residents and
fans of the “Boro” to leave their own memories of how the Foundation has supported them, or the favourite football moments on and off the pitch.
Some of you may have received one of the emails from prominent members of the Boro Family, and there are incredible prizes for those leaving messages on the Memory Wall that have kindly been donated by the Club. There are also challenges set for donors throughout the 36-hours, with never-before-seen footage of Stevenage FC first team players taking on challenges, and messages from legends of the Club. Make sure you stay tuned at get involved in the half-time challenge to have a chance to win a signed match ball from the game.
I’d like to thank Austin’s Funeral Directors who have generously agreed to donate £500 for every goal scored at the game today, to help us reach our target.
We want the pitch to become a community asset and something that generates interest not only about the pitch itself, but the Club and the opportunities that it represents through the work the Foundation team are doing week in, week out to create opportunities for all in our community to live active, healthy, and positive lives.
If you’d like to help us on our mission, then you can CLICK HERE TO DONATE
You can keep up to date with the Giving Day on the Foundation’s social media, simply search “Stevenage FC Foundation”, and make sure to follow the tracker and leave your own highlights on the Memory Wall Enjoy the game, COYB!

WELCOME
Most of you reading this will have heard of the painter, L. S. Lowry. One of his most famous pictures is called “Going to the Match”. The painting actually depicts fans going to Burnden Park, which was Bolton Wanderers original ground before the club relocated to their current stadium (which is situated in Horwich) in 1997.
Today it’s my pleasure to welcome Bolton Wanderers second visit to The Lamex here in Stevenage. The first occasion was during the Covid-19 lock-down, and no fans were allowed in. The Trotters are here today though, and very welcome they are too.

Peter was with the club when it merged with the Stevenage New Town Rangers FC in 1956, which is when the club was rebranded as Stevenage FC.
Playing alongside such luminaries as Mick Ward, Dennis “Lummy” Taylor, Alan “Jibber” Jackson and others in the Delphian League, Peter was an “ever-present” at the old London Road ground. An electrician by trade, Peter was often seen watching the ‘Boro’ here at Broadhall Way in his later years. Sadly, Peter passed away on February 14th. We’ll all miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Peter’s family at this sad time.
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION (FSA)
On March 19th, the Government initiated legislation to introduce an Independent Football Regulator. The FSA’s chief executive, Kevin Miles, said: “We very much welcome the proposal to introduce an independent regulator – it’s something the FSA and our supporters’ groups have argued in favour of for many, many years.
