e have played two away games since we last played at home, and it has been another step forward learning lessons about ourselves, our progress and our development. The game at Crawley will certainly be a big boost for us in terms of confidence and belief having turned that two-goal deficit around. It is also encouraging for our supporters. We had almost 300 that day and it is important for us to make sure we continue to encourage them. Having a squad is important. We play a lot of games, and we need to utilise the energy and expertise in all areas of the squad. If we are winning games and players are playing well, then we strive for rhythm. I am aware that we need to keep our rhythm that we have got already. We may change a player or two but that will not change the way we play. I would like the fact that we do not stop playing until the final whistle to be a strength of ours. Not that I want to be behind very often but inevitably that will happen and it is important that we can deal with being behind as well as being in front. We can provide slight changes to the way we play but ultimately the players have got to believe that they can score. We looked like that on Saturday. We looked like we believed we could get back in the game. That is a big step forward. The first part of progress is to make sure you get your home form sorted and that there is a level of consistency there. We play half of our games at home, and we

need to be good in those positions. I am very pleased with what we have done in our last four games at home. We were a 98th minute goal away from being four home wins in a row. We do not want to rest on our laurels, and we need to understand why we got those results. The time to analyse your performance is when you get a productive spell. You need to look at why it happened, how we did it and then find a way of repeating it. Our challenge now is to repeat the work we have seen in our last four home games.

“ON SATURDAY, WE BELIEVED WE COULD GET BACK IN THE GAME. THAT IS A BIG STEP FORWARD”

PHIL WALLACE

G

ood evening and welcome to the players and officials of Bradford City. The outstanding goal from Arthur Read and a last-minute equaliser from Scott Cuthbert after being 2-0 down on Saturday is why we love football. Our performance was laboured and lacked zip for sixty minutes or so, but the last thirty minutes showed a neversay-die attitude and fighting spirit that all good sides need. The feeling it creates lifts the spirits of us all and sets us up for the next game. So well done to the lads for that fightback! We have supported Paul strongly in the transfer window and the squad are now a robust, well-balanced outfit with quality and personality all over the pitch. Our target is a top 10 finish for the second 23 games of the season, and we are on track for that in eighth position in the last six-game form table. We look good value for that, and I am hoping we can surprise everyone with our form and results during February, March and April. A special mention here to Jake Reeves who suffered a very nasty elbow fracture at Tranmere yet wanted to carry on playing. He will be out for a good while, but we look forward to seeing him shortly.

www.stevenagefc.com

Ben Coker also suffered a knee injury in that game, and we are waiting for the scan results of that to see how long he will be out. I hope both recover quickly and we can see them back in a Boro shirt soon. Off the pitch, we have started the process for a new CEO, with over 70 good quality people applying. From those applications, we selected a number for interviews that we considered were most likely to excel in the role and that process is ongoing. I would expect us to get to a shortlist during this coming week and look to move forwards from there towards the end of the month. Despite being in the US, with video conferencing now so good, I can be present in those meetings on video whilst Stuart Dinsey leads the interviews in person at the stadium. We are really pleased with the quality of the candidates, and we have managed to select a wide variety of skills to choose between. More on this as we progress. Back to the game – I cannot wait to watch this one under the lights at The Lamex. Let’s all get behind Paul and the lads and enjoy ourselves!

oro fans might get the feeling that they just don’t get the rub of the green against Bradford and this match was another case in point as the Bantams hit back for a share of the spoils. With the home side hoping to stake a claim to another powerful season in League One, they also made an early mark on this game and were deservedly ahead on 23 minutes. Greg Tansey was

Saturday 31 August 2013

the man on the spot for Boro as he struck home a penalty, awarded after a Luke Freeman shot was handled. James Dunne then came close to a second and Boro could have been out of sight before Kyle Reid curled home a free kick in the second period to level it. Even then Boro might have grabbed it at the death but sub Oumare Tounkara saw a great shot brilliantly tipped away. DARREN ISTED CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 08 FEBRUARY It’s been a while since Boro’ recorded a (conventional) win on this particular date in history; a full quarter of a century since Corey Browne’s goal made the difference in our FA Trophy Round Two clash with Boreham Wood. Of course, you could argue that a win is a win, however it comes. And that means you only have to go back 17 years to find our latest victory on 8 February when Grays Athletic took us to penalties in our Conference Cup Round Four tie. It’s unfortunate that we appear to have lost our way on this date because it all started so well for us. Two members of the Gittings family got on the scoresheet today in 1986 as we hammered Rainham Town at Broadhall Way. That was a third straight win at the time; a run in which we scored 14 goals in a trio of early February fixtures. Two years later, that amazing form was flipped on its head as Boro’ shipped 11 goals in three February outings; two of which came at the hands of Basildon United on 08 February 1988. It was also our fifth successive defeat and had seen us firmly in a slump that would cost us our Vauxhall Opel League Division 1 status. Four years later, we returned to what was now called Diadora League Division 1 and once again found ourselves with a game to play on 08 February. Abingdon Town had walloped us 4-0 at their place earlier on in the campaign, but we did not take it lying down. Andy Walker grabbed a hattrick as

16

we scored four of our own – albeit allowing them to get one. In more recent times, we’ve not been seen in action on this date too often. And it’s perhaps just as well if our two past Football League outings are anything to go by. We were comfortably overcome by Bury on 08 February 2011 up at Gigg Lane, while a trip south to Exeter City in 2020 saw us fall to a 2-1 defeat – our fifth loss in a row in all competitions and a run that started with a 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park in the Leasing. com Trophy. 1986 Stevenage Borough 6-1 Rainham Town, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Driver 2, M Gittings, Armsby, P Gittings, Marshall) 1988 Stevenage Borough 0-2 Basildon United, Vauxhall Opel League Division 1 1992 Stevenage Borough 4-1 Abingdon Town, Diadora League Division 1 (Walker 3, M Gittings) 1997 Boreham Wood 0-1 Stevenage Borough, FA Trophy R2 (Browne) 2003 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Morecambe, Nationwide Conference (Richards) 2005 Stevenage Borough* 1-1 Grays Athletic, Conference Cup R4 (Maamria) 2011 Bury 3-0 Stevenage, npower League Two 2020 Exeter City 2-1 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two (Kemp) * Boro’ won 3-1 on penalties

Stevenage FC v Bradford City AFC

YOU AGAIN? BRADFORD CITY It’s now almost eight years since we last beat today’s guests; Bradford City winning four of the five meetings that have taken place since. Of course, there is a reason that we’ve met so few times in the intervening years. Our 3-2 victory up at Valley Parade in March 2014 didn’t ultimately help keep us in League One. And it was only in 2019 that the Bantams lost their own fight to stay in the third tier. Not that 2019-20 was the season we’d want to renew acquaintances. We managed to get both fixtures in during that Covid-hit campaign; the Bantams winning 1-0 at the Lamex early on in the season, then coming from behind to register a 3-1 victory in February 2020. That would be the last time that Boro’ had led a match at half time until 26 September 2020, when we travelled up to Valley Parade. Once again, we weren’t able to see it out and ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 defeat. We did, however, grab a point in the return fixture. Needless to say, we can reasonably claim to have been totally outclassed in this season’s trip to Valley Parade.

www.stevenagefc.com

Going back a little further, Boro’s only home win against the Bantams was more than a decade ago. Goals from Darius Charles and John Mousinho kept our playoff chase on course with a 2-1 win in April 2011; making amends for our 1-0 defeat at their place in the early stages of that season. In fact, our troubled 2013-4 campaign still stands as our best return against the Bantams. A home draw and away win saw us pick up four points from a possible six. Since then, it’s been a far less impressive haul for Boro’. We may not be able to repeat that four-point haul this campaign, but we can at least try and make it three with a home win today. It’s going to have to roll back a bit of history. But nothing lasts forever and we hope that includes their recent hold over us.

CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE SQUAD LIST Bradford sit seven points from the playoffs and five points clear of Boro after what has been a mixed season so far. Putting together a run of wins has proved tough for the Bantams and after a reasonable start to the campaign they have struggled of late going into and following the festive period. Much

26

has been expected of Derek Adam’s side and they looked to be on their way early on when they handed out a 4-1 drubbing to Boro. But of late it’s a different story with three wins, four draws and three defeats in their last 10 in the league leaving them unable to keep pace with the sides in the shakeup at the top.

DID YOU KNOW? •S ome clubs take a lifetime to reach the Football League but for Bradford it literally happened overnight. Founded in 1903, they were elected into Division Two of the Football League the same year. • 1903 was clearly a busy time for sport in Bradford and the Association game also debuted that year at Valley Parade, when Bradford played an exhibition game against the 1902 FA Cup winners Sheffield United. • Bradford made a quick march among the elite and after winning promotion to the top flight they won the FA Cup in 1911 with a 1-0 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford in a reply after a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

Stevenage FC v Bradford City AFC

ONE TO WATCH After spending the second half of the 2020/2021 season on loan with the Bantams, Andy Cook signed permanently from Mansfield Town on a two-year deal in June 2021. The 30-year-old scored eight goals in 16 starts while on loan in the last campaign. Cook is an experienced striker with almost 400 career appearances to his name so far.

THE BOSS Derek Adams became the Bantams’ first team coach after putting pen to paper on a three-year contract in June 2021. Adams is an experienced manager who has so far overseen almost 600 games from the dugout in his career. The Scotsman has previously twice had spells in charge of Ross County and then with Plymouth Argyle, and Morecambe whom he guided to promotion from League Two in the 2020/21 season.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME BRADFORD I don’t know. You wait ages and ages for a Yorkshire club to come to Stevenage and then two turn up at once! Harrogate last week and now Bradford. “Eee, reight champion”. So, a big Boro welcome to the Bantams and especially to their supporters who have made the long journey from God’s Own County. Right then, I’m off for a ‘proper brew’.

“50/50 TICKETS” Ah, the clarion call from the dulcet tones of our esteemed 50/50 ticket sellers when you enter the ground by the turnstiles on match-days. Always wearing a cheery, friendly smile, I’m happy to announce a new member to our merry band of sellers. Some of you may recognise her, for she is Judy Crook. Judy (you may recall) used to be the ‘matriarch’ of the Broadhall Suite operation many years ago. Her sausage and chips used to be the talk of the town! The photo (right) is that of Judy and Fiona, in action alongside turnstiles 1-3 at the recent Harrogate game.

GORDON ALLINSON (1934 - 2021) The Supporters’ Association were saddened to learn of the passing of Gordon Allinson on December 28th. Gordon held a senior position within the club during its formative years from 1980 to 1982. With his wife Pat, Gordon moved to Stevenage from Islington in 1956, and raised three children - Sandra, Tracey and Keith. Gordon developed an interest in youth

www.stevenagefc.com

football, following the careers of his nephews (Ian and Martin) and son (Keith) who went on to play at a senior level with Stevenage. Gordon coached local club Cygnet Youth in the late 1970’s, graduating to manage the Stevenage Borough reserve team from 1980. It was during this period that Gordon was highly influential in the squad development, achieving much success under his stewardship. In later years, Gordon found himself active again at Stotfold FC assisting his nephew, Ian Allinson. Retiring in 1997, Gordon enjoyed the pleasures of golf and developing his long-time friendship with the former Stevenage chairman, George Clarke. Some of you may remember Keith Allinson (Gordon’s son) who was the club’s physiotherapist when Paul Fairclough was manager. Our commiserations go to Gordon’s family at this time. We mourn the loss of Gordon’s passing - as another link with the club’s past is consigned to history.

BORO BUS TO BARROW Who of you will come with us to Holker Street next Saturday? It might be a 600 mile return trip, but given our current form, who wouldn’t miss the opportunity of watching the mighty Boro at this awayday? Departing the Lamex at 08:30am, the cost is £35 for members and £40 for nonmembers (concessions apply). LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
