n behalf of everyone at the club I would like to extend a warm welcome to Steven and everyone connected with Carlisle

FC today. It is always a challenging and difficult experience for everyone connected to the club when a manager moves on. The way in which the players, staff and everyone at the club has responded to those difficult circumstances has been incredible. It has been a real indication of the many fantastic people we have as part of our club, that in challenging times, I have felt in every moment a sense of family and togetherness. Thank you to everyone at the club for playing your part over the last week. I am proud & humbled to be given the Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

opportunity to lead this team, it is a real honour to play a part in growing our football club. The players are a real great group of men who work hard every day, are always wanting to learn and desperate to bring success to this football club. I am also delighted Revs agreed work with us as assistant manager, he is such a great guy and it has been humbling to see the respect he has from everyone at the football club. The club are lucky to have a young, ambitious and talented group of staff to support the players and I am excited to see what we can achieve together. We are all working so hard to be a team you can be proud of. Thank you for your support it genuinely means so much to the players. www.stevenagefc.com | 5

warm welcome to the directors, officials, players and supporters of Carlisle United. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home. Well, that was an eventful week! Following the 4-2 defeat at Cheltenham we came to the conclusion that we needed to change the approach and Dino’s 18 month reign as manager ended on Monday. That’s never an easy decision to reach and it’s made even harder when the person has spent many years at various stages as a player, coach and manager but we’ve not won a single game all season and we cannot assume that it will sort itself out when some of the injured players return. Dino gave it everything he had and we wish him well in his future career. We asked Mark Sampson to step into the hot seat in a caretaker basis and moved Alex Revell up from the Academy to work with him. I’ve received glowing praise on Alex from Robbie O’Keefe and I’ve learnt to listen when Robbie talks. Obviously this is a tremendous opportunity for both Mark and Alex to gain experience of EFL management. They have all the ingredients between them to be a success and I want to have a close look at how they handle all aspects of management. So far, with only a week in the bank, I have to say I’m impressed and I hope we get the wins we deserve over the coming weeks. Speaking of the Academy, we’ve got some talented players coming though our system now and fans have already seen the likes of 17 year olds Luis Fernandez and Jack Smith in first team shirts this season. There is a conveyor belt of young talent behind them and Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

it’s starting to look very promising in regard to developing young players. The other hot topic – the North Stand – is coming along nicely. You’ll be able to see that the seats are in, the elevated disabled section is fitted and we’ve now started the pitch perimeter walkway in front of the stand. We expect to finish that at the end of next week. Internally we’ve almost completed the Upper Level (tea bar and toilets) and expect the floor to be epoxy painted at the end of next week. We’re on track to meet our planned ‘mini opening’ on Saturday 28th September. This will be restricted to North Stand Season Ticket holders as we go for a soft opening, making sure everything works correctly. The Lower Level (bar area) is still 4-6 weeks behind that as we concentrate on the external areas to make sure we comply with the H+S regs. Back to the game – we need to get some points on the board and your voices in support of our new management team will go a long way to helping us win them. Let’s hear you! Enjoy the game! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

e go back 15 years for this clash in front of a crowd of 1,788 as Boro entertained the Brewers in the Nationwide Conference. After a mixed start of three wins and two defeats, a Boro side spearheaded by Anthony Elding up front failed to find the net and suffered a frustrating afternoon, going down to a 1-0 defeat, despite the introduction with 20 minutes remaining of George Boyd for Michael Brough. It was to be the second in a run of three successive defeats although Boro ended the month with two wins.

ON THIS DAY Saturday September 14, 1996 Arlesey 0 Stevenage 3 Back in 1996 Boro may well have been Conference champions but they still had to start their FA Cup journey in the first qualifying round. And the draw threw up this fascinating local clash as they were paired away to FA Vase holders Arlesey Town in a match which was switched to Hitchin’s Top Field. As it turned out the 1,564 in attendance did not get a shock as Boro, who fielded a legendary defence of Kenny Webster, Robbie Mutchell, Mark Smith and Efe Sodje cruised to a 3-0 win. Boro had another local clash in the next round, beating Baldock 2-1 before a long run saw them eventually fall 2-0 at Birmingham in the third round proper. ACADEMY

ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex Stadium for todays game. At the time of writing, we will have played our first schoolboy games at our wonderful new home in St Albans, which we were delighted to acquire for the season. The pitches our young players will be playing on will provide them with the opportunity to practice with freedom and we expect them to flourish in such an environment. With the progression of our U18 players in to the 1st team, this has created opportunities for Alex and Ronnie to expose a number of players within the Youth Development Phase (U13-16’s) to competitive football at U18 level, something we have always been keen advocates for as we have seen the accelerated development such exposure encourages. The first six games have seen a total of 32 appearances from our U15 & U16 players, with some outstanding performances highlighted by the coaching staff. The U16’s games programme, which mirrors the U18s, has again provided us with the opportunity to stretch our young players by playing them up against physically more developed opposition, to which they have at times thrived and at others found really difficult. It is in these moments we see fantastic learning opportunities and it is paying dividends with a far greater number of goals scored and more wonderful football being played than at this time last year. Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

Recently, our U15’s attended a qualifier event for the Premier League Floodlit Cup and found the experience incredibly challenging and will take lots of learning from the day. In competing with the likes of Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic, the players were able to measure their own development against those from a higher category and we were delighted with some of the attacking football they were able to play. We also took our U12’s, U13’s and U14’s to West Ham last month which was a tough fixture for our schoolboys, something we are managing to provide more often as the seasons go by as our reputation within the football community grows. My final mention in these notes is for Glenn Quirke, who up until a week ago had been our Academy administrator for around 9 years and has seen the comings and goings of so many players, parents and staff members through the building. From our humble beginnings entering the Football League to being the successful developer of talent we are today, Glenn has been an integral part of our operation, fully committing to our philosophy of everybody’s job being to produce players. We welcome Amy Ganderton into the building as Glenn’s replacement and we are sure she will too enjoy a long tenure of success at our terrific football club. Enjoy the game, Ieuan.

e had the long trip away to Norwich City Women on Sunday 1st September, a fixture that has never been easy. Despite the long journey the players seemed extremely focused and really up for the game. That showed as soon as we started we were on the front foot, causing their defence problems with good movement from our front two. We came in at HT with a 3-1 lead, although Norwich had chances and hit the woodwork twice. 2nd half we did what we had to do, getting the next goal to make it 4-1 was huge and settled us down. Our game management towards the end was really good and probably could’ve scored a few more, this time we hit the woodwork twice. On the whole it was good all round performance and good to get 3 points away from home. Next up we’re at home to Leyton Orient tomorrow afternoon.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME I should like to welcome the fans and supporters who have made the long journey from Brunton Park this afternoon. The Carlisle United Supporters Club (CUOSC) are incredibly active in their own community, and organised their fans to bring supplies for the local food bank during their recent home game against Salford. Currently CUOSC are promoting an online petition to HM Gov. for the creation of an independent regulator for football, in light of the recent episodes involving Bury FC and Bolton Wanderers. Loving their notion of ‘match-day surgeries’ too. Might just borrow that idea for our own SA! I wish them well in their endeavours.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION Much has happened since the amalgamation of the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) and Supporters’ Direct (SD). The new group has defined itself as the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) and the Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association is an affiliate member, residing in the League 2 section of the structure (alongside the four independent groups representing our opposition this afternoon – Carlisle United).

Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

Under the FSF, Stevenage were members of the Southern Section, which would meet regularly in London with numerous other clubs attending. Given the geography of League 2 clubs, meetings of the FSA are yet to be organised. However, the Southern Section of the old FSF still meets, the next being on Sunday 26th September. Top of the agenda is whether the old Southern Section should register as an affiliate member to the FSA itself and to re-name the Southern Section as a consequence. If you’d like to join me at this meeting, do let me know and I will send you the details.

BORO BUS The Supporter’s Association arranges and organises supporters’ travel to every away match. Our next away game is on Saturday September 21st when we travel to Forest Green Rovers. The cost is just £20 for members and £25 for nonmembers, departing The Lamex at 10:00am. For further information and to book your place on the bus, please contact John Carroll on 01438 814285 (after 6.00pm).

picked up just one point in their next four games letting in nine goals in that time. They did end that run away at rock bottom Scunthorpe United with a 1-0 win. Performances didn’t get any better in their last game at home, as they came up against in-form Exeter City. After going one nil down to The Grecians in the first half, The Blues did level the game just after the hour mark, courtesy of Olufela Olomola. But the score didn’t stay level for long, as the away side did take back advantage five minutes later and Nicky Law wrapped the win up in stoppage time.

STAR MAN… TAYLA CATTON takes an in-depth look at Carlisle United as we face the Cumbrians at The Lamex Stadium this Saturday…

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE OPPOSITION… The Blues have been competing in successive seasons against Stevenage ever since our time in League One together in 2011/12, and were eventually relegated to Sky Bet League Two in 2014 after promotion to the league above in 2006. They were in contention to break into the Play-Off spots last season, but after picking up four wins in their last 15 games, the Cumbrians ended up finishing three points behind Newport County and one place behind Boro in 11th spot.

Olufela Olomola, who plays as a striker, has started this season in good form for Carlisle with three goals in six games. The 22-year-old on loan from Scunthorpe, was sent out to Yeovil Town last season, as the club finished bottom of League 2 and relegated to the National League.

LATEST FORM… Carlisle have been guilty of leaking goals this season, as they have the second worst defensive record this campaign with 13 conceded so far and sit in 18th place. After an opening day 2-1 victory against Crawley at Brunton Park, the club 28 | www.stevenagefc.com

THE GAFFER‌ Steven Pressley took over at Brunton Park after John Sheridan resigned in January this year. The ex-Scottish international hasn’t had the best starts to his reign at Carlisle, as he has seen more defeats than wins which resulted in their dropping out of the Play-Offs last season, and a bad start to this campaign. The former centre back played for a host of teams such as Glasgow rivals Rangers and Celtic, Hearts and Dundee United. Pressley did make the move south of the border to Coventry, a club which he eventually went on to manage as well.

COMMERCIAL Today’s match against Carlisle United is sponsored by Fortrus with the Mitre Match Ball being sponsored by ACE Garage Doors.

SPORTSMAN’S DINNER We are delighted to announce that our next Sportsman’s Dinner will be held in the Broadhall Suite on Friday 20th September, with the guest speaker being Ian Holloway. IAN HOLLOWAY He’ll be ably supported on the night by TV and radio presenter and general football nut, Mark Clemmit. With almost 600 first team games to his credit, and just under 1000 games as a Manager, Ian certainly knows his football and his charm and wit has seen him make many TV appearances, he currently makes regular guest appearances MARK CLEMMIT on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on Talk Sport. He has some fantastic stories to tell, and he’ll tell them in a way that will have you totally enthralled. As usual, we’ll be serving a traditional three course dinner, expertly prepared in-house by our resident Chef, Tony Start. Tables of 10 are available at £600 with individual tickets also available at £65. Space in the Broadhall Suite is limited so please book early, either by emailing Clive Abrey at clivea@stevenagefc.com or by calling him on 01438 223223.
