TAKE A STAND & HELP KICK DISCRIMINATION OUT OF FOOTBALL Ahead of this Saturday’s dedicated Kick It Out Matchday, Stevenage Football Club are proud to be supporting Kick It Out’s campaign, Take A Stand, which is calling for action in the fight against discrimination in football. Through Take A Stand, Kick It Out - football’s equality and inclusion organisation - want to create a culture where individuals take personal responsibility for being part of the change. That includes fans, players,

Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

managers, CEOs, stewards, governing bodies, shop assistants and social media organisations – everyone on and off the pitch. Most football fans will have witnessed some form of discrimination in football – on the terraces, in dressing rooms or on social media – but more needs to be done to move from awareness to action. Take A Stand is both a challenge and an invitation for individuals and organisations to publicly commit to their own pledge. It is also a movement that everyone can play a part in. It’s time to #TakeAStand against discrimination. It has no place in our game. If you experience or are witness to any incident, you can report it to Kick It Out: https://www.kickitout.org/ forms/online-reporting-form Stevenage Football Club will #TakeAStand by adding social media abuse into our sanctions policy. Any form of discrimination either on or offline will result in supporters receiving bans from attending matches. CEO Alex Tunbridge said, “We will once again be supporting the initiatives of Kick It Out as we do on an annual

www.stevenagefc.com

basis, with a particular focus this year on tackling abuse across social media platforms. As a Club we are committed to tackling all forms of discrimination and believe the addition to our sanctions policy to reflect social media abuse is an important step in achieving this.” For those who would like to make a pledge, either individually or as an organisation, or want more information on how to do this, please contact Kick It Out at info@kickitout.org. For more information about Take A Stand, visit: www.kickitout.org/take-a-stand You can also make a pledge by joining the conversation on social media, just use #TakeAStand and tag Kick It Out in your posts.

oro moved to within just one point of the play-off zone as they came from behind to win this clash almost 10 years ago to the day. In their first campaign in the Football League, the hosts went into the match with five wins out of seven to push them up the table and in the hunt for a place in Division One. After a cagey start in front of a crowd of 2,732 there were fears it might not be the home side’s day as they fell behind on 33 minutes. Ashley Grimes found the

net from the penalty spot for the Imps after a handball in the area from Scott Laird. But it was to be Lawrie Wilson who was the hero of the day as just four minutes later he made sure Boro went in 1-1 at the interval with an equaliser, following a neat turn and shot. The points were then won on the hour mark when John Mousinho set up Wilson again and he crashed home into the top corner from 20 yards for a goal which proved to be the winner. DARREN ISTED

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 20 MARCH It turns out that goals aren’t usually a feature of matches played on 20 March if you’re a Boro’ supporter. This might fit in quite nicely with our habit for 0-0 draws this season, to be fair. But the fact is we’ve managed just four goals in eight matches played on this date in history; three of which came in our two victories. The consolation is, if you needed one, that two of those goals secured three points against Woking at Kingfield in 1999. And who doesn’t like getting the better of the Cards when the chance comes around? Back to our apparent struggles for goals on this date, it’s fitting that our first-ever match and our most recent outing on 20 March both finished goalless. It spans a period that started in 1993 (at Wivenhoe Town) and bring us up to 2012 (vs. Colchester United). There’s one other goalless draw on this day too; our 2010 FA Trophy Semi-Final second leg at home to Kidderminster Harriers. Well, we’d pretty much already got the job done in the first leg; winning 5-1 at Aggborough. From one FA Trophy final-making Boro’ team to another; Mark Stimson’s side had just booked their spot in the 2006-7 showpiece when we travelled to Dagenham & Redbridge on this date in 2007. A 2-0 reverse at the Victoria Road did a good job of keeping the Daggers’ title surge on track. But it was the first of four defeats in five games that’d cost us an opportunity to join them in going up as we ultimately finished eight points adrift of the playoffs that season. Still, it was better than our 3-0 defeat there in 2001. Small wins can be found wherever you look… ahem!

YOU AGAIN?: CARLISLE UNITED It all started out so well for us against our latest opponents; Boro’ doing the league double over Carlisle United during the 2004-5 Nationwide Conference campaign. But the eagle-eyed among you will know those two regulation matches

Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

weren’t the end of the tale that season. We played the Cumbrians in the playoff final at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium and those six points ended up counting for nothing as Peter Murphy’s first half goal sent the Cumbrians up at our expense. It took us six years for us to catch the Cumbrians up – and we had to get promoted twice to do so. Still, old habits died hard when we met in September 2011 for a League One encounter. The words ‘Peter Murphy’, ‘first-half’, and ‘header’ did for us again. It wasn’t a make-or-break win for them. But it was spookily familiar. Boro’ got back into winning ways against Carlisle late on in the 2011-2 season; John Mousinho coming off the bench in April to get a late winner. It was decisive too. Boro’ went onto make the playoffs, while they missed out by four points. For us, however, the Cumbrians could sort of claim to have the last laugh. We embarked on a run of five without a win against them as we both dropped out of League One together in 2014. When we broke that hoodoo, you could claim a

www.stevenagefc.com

sense of déjà vu; a 1-0 win in April helping us towards the playoffs. Again, it kickstarted another poor run for us. Boro’ lost the next three and drew the fourth. It wasn’t until the 2018-9 season that we put things right again. Boro’ won both League Two fixtures against Carlisle during that campaign. But we couldn’t press home our new-found dominance. The Cumbrians were one of many teams to take advantage of our poor form in the 2019-20 season, with a 3-2 win at the Lamex in September. The return? Well, we never got that far; Brunton Park due to be our destination for the final game of last season. With how things were going, it could’ve turned out to be our last in the Football League. What a difference a year makes, eh?

WOMEN

Kate French defender

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I’m 17, currently still at school doing my A-Levels. I’ve supported Man United since I was little and have been playing football since I was 7. WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? I first played for Hitchin Belles when I was young, then for Knebworth and Stevenage Borough Juniors, before joining Stevenage Women. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL? I am still at school at the moment in sixth form studying for A-Levels. I also like taking my dog on walks around the fields every day. HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? It can sometimes be difficult managing football and school work, but training is a good way of taking my mind off the stress by doing something I enjoy. CAN YOU TELL ME WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? Growing up my favourite footballer was always Wayne Rooney. Although I did look up to Alex Scott, as she was one of the first female footballers I became aware of, through seeing her on TV and in person at events when I was young. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Steph Houghton and Alex Scott were always my favourite, I liked their dedication and attitudes they had whilst playing. Especially as they play in the

24

Stevenage FC v Carlisle United

same position as me so I aspire to be more like them. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I got the opportunity to go to Dallas, Texas, when I was 15 with Stevenage Borough Juniors to play in a tournament against people all around the world. It was amazing to experience the enormity of female football out there and see how dedicated and passionate they were towards it. IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? It was my first season getting the chance to play with the first team, which has been an amazing opportunity. I feel it has helped me develop a lot as a player both technically and personally, as women’s football is a big step up from grassroots. I am really looking forward to getting back and playing again once the season restarts. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? I’ve been doing the zoom fitness sessions every week, as well as going on runs and walking the dog every day. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? I like to have a good breakfast in the morning, then will just relax and get ready before I have to leave. I’ll usually have a snack closer to the game and listen to music on the way there. DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-MATCH SUPERSTITIONS? I don’t really have any superstitions, just as long as I make sure I have everything packed and leave on time so I’m not rushed or stressed in the morning.

www.stevenagefc.com

DO YOU HAVE A GO TO CELEBRATION FOR WHEN YOU SCORE? Being a defender I don’t score very often, so would probably just be in shock! AS WE’RE CURRENTLY IN LOCKDOWN, WHAT TV SERIES ARE YOU CURRENTLY, OR HAVE BEEN, BINGE WATCHING? I’m watching The Office at the moment which is very good as well as Rupaul’s Drag Race UK, which is very addictive! WHO MAKES YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM XI [OF FEMALE FOOTBALLERS]? GK- Christine Endler, CB- Steph Houghton, CB-Leah Williamson, RB-Lucy Bronze, LB- Alex Greenwood, CM-Jill Scott, CM-Fren Kirby, CAM-Jordan Nobbs, RM-Danielle van de Donk, LMTobin Heath, ST-Vivianne Miedema

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS The team that we know today were formed in 1904 when a club named Shaddongate United opted for a change to Carlisle United. Within five years they had moved to their current home Brunton Park and the history of the club was set. The Cumbrians played much of their nonleague life in the Lancashire Combination and North Eastern League before making

the move to the Football League in 1928 when they were elected in place of Durham City (who never returned to the league setup). They were to stay in Division Three North until it changed to Division Four, though their biggest post-war claim to fame was the 1949 decision to name former player Bill Shankly as manager. A golden era was heralded in 1964 when promotion from Division Four was followed by the Division Three title and then a solid 12 years in the second tier. The 1974-75 campaign was a bittersweet affair, United reached the top flight for the only campaign in their history and after

three wins in the first three games they took top spot before finishing 22nd and last. Life in the lower leagues then followed before headlines were hit in May 1999 when Carlisle avoided relegation out of the Football League thanks to a last gasp goal from keeper Jimmy Glass. The trapdoor did finally swing open in 2004 but the Cumbrians were out of the league for just one season, beating Boro in that illfated play-off final in 2005 at the Britannia Stadium. Since that return Carlisle have spent eight seasons in League One and are now in their sixth season in the bottom tier.

THE BOSS Carlisle United Football Club appointed experienced and highly respected coach Chris Beech in November 2019 as head coach on an 18-month deal which will keep him in charge of first team affairs until at least the summer of this year. Beech, 46, started his playing career with his hometown club Blackpool where he made over 100 senior appearances. He then spent two years with Hartlepool

before moving to join Huddersfield Town, where he played under Steve Bruce as the Terriers pushed for promotion from the Championship. His long association with Rochdale started in 2002 where he enjoyed time as a player, youth team manager, assistant manager and caretaker manager before parting company with the club.

WATCH OUT FOR - CALLUM GUY The midfielder, 24, penned an 18-month deal with the Blues during the January 2020 transfer window. A box-to-box midfielder, he started his career with Derby County where he quickly became a regular in the club’s under-23 side. He had loan spells with Port Vale and Bradford whilst with the Rams, where he gained vital league experience, then spent the first half of the 2018/19 campaign at Bloomfield Road, where he made 21 appearances. His performances secured him a permanent move and he made just under 50 appearances for the Tangerines, including 22 through the first half of the 2019/20 season. He has made 33 appearances this season, creating nine assists.

LATEST NEWS

CARLISLE UNITED I’m pleased to welcome the players and officials of Carlisle United to The Lamex this afternoon. I’ll never forget my very first visit to Brunton Park. It was February 24th 1973 in the 5th round of the FA Cup. The 2nd Division Blues were playing Arsenal and over 23,000 came to watch. A giant killing was almost on the cards, but a late header by Frank McClintock put paid to that notion. Rotherham-born Alan Ashman was manager at the time and he went on to steer the club to promotion to the top flight. In fact, in August 1973, Carlisle actually topped the entire football league for a while after having won their first three games!

ATMOSPHERE I had occasion to visit the Football Ground Map website the other day, https://www.footballgroundmap.com It’s one of those portals where visiting fans are invited to comment on opponents’ stadiums after their visit. With a declaration of over 154,000 registered users and positive reviews on Trustpilot ©, I took time to take on board some of the comments – especially those about Stevenage. Whereas the League 2 club cited with the best atmosphere was Bradford City, sadly, Stevenage were rated well down the table. Well, with our teams improving performances, and a brand new stand to fill, it won’t be long before the Boro faithful return with a vengeance. Atmosphere? We’ll show them atmosphere!

STEVENAGE FOOTBALL ARTIFACT This afternoon’s objet d’art dates back to 1968. It comprises the old Stevenage Athletic club tie and Supporters’ Club badge. Note the unusual motif. If you think it looks a bit like a bird and a hedgehog in a bonfire, then you’d be right! “Why?”, I hear you ask. It’s a conundrum that has challenged Stevenage fans for years, but happily, I am able to elucidate. The club was actually conceived by Jim Briscoe, but the fledgling club needed serious backing from someone with the necessary resource. Sid Stapleton was the right man at the right time. Sid was a self-made millionaire, born and bred in Hitchin - a Hertfordshire man through and through. As Athletic’s new chairman, he thought he would try his hand at branding. Given that the “New Town” was being extensively populated with people from North London, Sid likened this to an influx of ‘Cockney Sparrows’. Now, back in the day, a ‘Hertfordshire Hedgehog’ was a term originally coined by Londoners, who claimed people from Herts made for prickly neighbours. Happily, the phrase is more affectionate now, but it suited the purpose from Sid Stapleton’s perspective. Hence the Stevenage Athletic club badge depicting a Cockney Sparra’ and a Hertfordshire Hedgehog rising phoenixlike from the ashes of the old Stevenage Town club. It’s all true, I promise you. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
