Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Crewe Alexandra and Lee Bell to tonight’s game at The Lamex Stadium.
After Saturday’s performance and getting back to winning ways, it is a good feeling to have back. The players have worked incredibly hard to make sure we got onto the right track again, with double sessions for most of last week, and they got their rewards. As a group of players, they have been terrific. They came in, they responded and never moaned about working hard. If that is what it brings, that is what we will continue to do.
We are still getting some lads up to speed who haven’t been playing regularly since the January window, so it was expected at the end of the game that we became slightly nervous and
EVANS
tired – but we made sure we went about our business in a shapely fashion. Josh March came into the team and got us a couple of goals, and that has been over the last ten days we felt he was ready to start. There are different fitness levels here to where he came from, but he will have rightly enjoyed his drive home Saturday night.
We have been unfortunate with injuries and issues over the last few weeks. We’re fighting to get Luther and TVC out of the physio room, as well as changing goalkeepers more often than we would like. Hopefully now we can go into tonight with a positive frame of mind and see what it brings.
I watched Crewe on Friday night and thought they were terrific; they probably just shaded the game against Salford City. We know it is going to be a tough game.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
Crewe travelled to the Lamex Stadium having picked up 7 points in their last 4 games. The hosts’ form was a stark contrast as Boro were winless in their last three, a poor run of form that left them bottom of League One and nine points adrift from safety. Boro’ asserted their control within the first five minutes as Jimmy Smith tried to play a through ball towards Luke Freeman, however Crewe defender, Harry Davis, could only flick the ball away from its intended recipient. The clearance however only unleashed Francois Zoko, who chested the ball down and poked his shot beyond Neil Etheridge to give Stevenage a very early lead.
Crewe attempted to fight back moments later in the first half through a Chuks Aneke header that seemed to be destined for the Stevenage net, only for Chris Day to palm the shot onto his crossbar. The away side continued to probe away and try and restore a balance to the games’ scoreline as Byron Moore floated in a wonderful cross, which Mathias Pogba met, but it was just too high for the Guinean as his effort looped over the bar. Boro secured all three points, and despite it being not the most enthralling victory it was a welcome one as they tried to piece together a survival bid. ALFIE

ON THIS DAY: 14 MARCH
On balance, 14 March tends to be a productive day for Boro’; tasting defeat in just two of the previous nine fixtures played on this date. Mind you, one of those was our most recent effort. Blackpool ended our ninematch unbeaten streak in League
Two six years ago today. It was a result that saw us slip to sixth on goal difference.
Boro’s only other defeat on this date came on 14 March 1998. The 19978 campaign wasn’t fantastic from a league per-spective. But we’d only lost twice in 1998 by the time Slough Town arrived for our FA Trophy Quarter Final (that includes our FA Cup defeat at Newcastle). Still, any hopes of silverware were snuffed out in a narrow 1-0 defeat.
It was all the more frustrating for the fact that, two days later, Slough were back for a league game that we won 4-2.
It wasn’t the same story in our FA Trophy Semi-Final first leg at home to Ebbsfleet United on this date in 2009. While con-ceding two away goals wasn’t ideal, it put us in pole position for a return to Wembley Stadium.
IT’S CREWE ALEXANDRA AGAIN…
For a time, it felt as if we could be sure of points when we played Crewe Alexandra. We didn’t lose any of our

first six meetings. But then we won just once in the following eight encounters; The Railwaymen’s 5-1 win here at the Lamex just before Christmas 2019 the nadir of our dreadful 2019-20 League Two campaign.
Still, our head-to-head record is now back on an even keel after our 2-1 win at their place earlier this season – six wins apiece and three draws.

HISTORY
ON BOTH SIDES…
In the Crewe ranks today and hopefully not coming back to haunt us is David Amoo, who made the switch during the most recent January transfer window. He’s certainly not the first to represent the two sides either. Chuks Aneke fared much better for them in comparison to his loan spell with us earlier in his career. Mark Roberts, meanwhile, probably agrees that his impact at Boro’ was much greater than that at Gresty Road.
Other names on the list? Efetobore
Sodje, Ben Nugent, Ryan Kirby, Marcus Haber, Anthony Grant, and Anthony
MAGIC MOMENT:
25 February 2014 – Sky Bet League One
Elding. Our recent emergency loan goalkeeper signing Toby Savin is another to mention.
Incredibly, only one of Boro’s six wins against our visitors today have come on home turf. Our fortunes are much better at Gresty Road, while Crewe have three wins on their travels to the Lamex. So, our magical moment this time around is our
only home win to date at their expense. Bizarrely again, it was a win that came during our ill-fated 2013-4 League One campaign. The Railwaymen weren’t in a great shape themselves. While we remained bottom after this victory, it moved us to within six points of Crewe –who sat two points clear of the relegation zone. The game? Francois Zoko’s goal in the fifth minute settled matters.

Hello and good evening, everyone. I’m now six months into the role as Youth Development Phase
Lead Coach and thoroughly enjoying the challenge of developing our next generation of player. My team of coaches and I are still being imaginative in stimulating the players to engage in new methods of player led learning. Including player led game footage, delivered as a presentation, of how they have identified and implemented areas for improvement of the course of their next block of learning. Linking these learning initiatives to the player’s Individual Development Plans (IDP) has been a real benefit to player development, highlighting the
importance of understanding that small details matter to the player in their football journey. The IDP aims to identify players areas for development whilst providing the player with a positive, challenging and enjoyable learning environment, with an emphasis on developing them as individuals who can excel equally as footballers and people. The games programme continues to challenge our boys, facing opposition from across the spectrum of Categorised Clubs including a number of Cat 1 Clubs such as Arsenal, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion & Norwich. The Under 15s have reached the semi finals of the East Cup after a victory over MK Dons last weekend. The U14s are Gold Cup Finalists of the Amber Super League after beating Southampton, Ipswich and Leyton Orient. The U13s continue to excel reaching the final of the Amber Super League, narrowly losing to the Tournament hosts Cambridge United. We are constantly striving to give the players in all our age groups challenges with Clubs they may not usually face, including tournaments hosted by Kidderminster Harriers, Reading and Wycombe Wonderers coming up during the Easter Break. Enjoy the game.

Agame of few chances was decided by an early second half goal from Lois Balfour as league leaders
Stevenage FCW fell to a lacklustre defeat in Suffolk. The long journey from Hertfordshire would have been made even longer by the knowledge they had the better of the ball, but in truth it was a difficult game which never really got into its rhythm.
The first half was dominated by the away side as Boro’ kept the ball well. Corners and free kicks in useful positions were won, and Kelsey Millen nearly scored from a corner in the early exchanges, but her inswinger from the left hand side brushed the crossbar on its way over.
Equally, Nicole Farmer attempted to repeat her goalscoring heroics from the previous game against Bowers and Pitsea, but her free kick couldn’t dip under the bar and flew safely above the horizontal woodwork.
The game was played mostly in fits and starts through the middle of the pitch, with solid defending from both sides. Rosy Wodhams nearly broke that wall of red as she produced a swashbuckling run towards the area, but her ball to Millen was just short and Needham breathed again.
Boro made the earlier changes after half an hour and minutes later should have opened the scoring. Wodhams again attacked the final third and rounded Evie McKane, but she couldn’t maintain her balance and her shot was scuffed into the path of the defence and easily cleared.
Needham did show some spirit, but no clear cut chances. Their best opportunity of the half coming from an attack down the left which Mia O’Brien collected easily. Hannah Bodily did manage a shot from distance following a cleared Millen corner, but it flew wide and no further chances of note were recorded.
Boro’ tweaked their formation at half time and within seconds of the restart were behind. The ball came down the right hand side and was crossed into the box for Balfour to sweep home with aplomb. It was too easy for Needham and gave the home side a cushion to defend.
They did this well. The next chance of note came from a Hannah Nebbitt free kick that was just tipped over the bar by McKane. Needham rarely pushed forward, but did have a small spell of opportunities in the middle of the half with an effort from the right by Ellie Rossiter who chose to shoot rather than pass finding only the side netting.
Time was running out for Stevenage and the chances remained few and far between. Erin Price saw a good half volley from distance fly wide of the post, while Katie White also briefly broke free in the box but was closed down quickly by McKane.
22 STEVENAGE FC V CREWE ALEXANDRA FC STEVENAGE FC
“By the time we started playing our football, it was too late”
In the end, Needham came away with the three points and a jubilant dressing room as they moved into third. Stevenage remain top, but by a fine margin with the chasing pack still having multiple games in hand. Manager Fadi Mazloum cut a disconsolate figure after the game as he said, “We switched off for the goal. We allowed the ball across the goal and didn’t deal with it. By the time we started playing our football, it was too late.”
Haringey, Luton and Sudbury all play one of their games in hand next Sunday, with Needham in cup action and Stevenage on a rest weekend. The top of the table is far from decided with promotion up for grabs by all of the above. It is sure to be a barnstorming end to the season.

FORM GUIDE
Safe to say this has been a frustrating campaign for the Alex, one which really hasn’t seemed to get going. They sit comfortably away from the relegation dogfight, but by the same token even a
tilt at the play-offs is now a long run of wins away.
Indeed one could go back to that day in September when Boro came to Gresty Road for a match which summed our visitors up. For those Boro fans who were there you’ll recall we survived a penalty on 19 minutes before finally falling behind less than 10 minutes later. What should have been a comfortable home win turned into a remarkable fightback and a Jamie Reid double settled the points.
It has been pretty mixed from then on with few wins mixed in between runs of draws and defeats. An FA Cup first round win at home to Orient did show what the Railwaymen are capable of, but their exit to Barnsley and current ability to secure draws is a sign that this campaign may already be drawing to a close.

MEET THE BOSS:
Lee Bell came through the renowned Crewe Alexandra Academy to play in the Championship under Dario Gradi. Bell progressed in the same group as Dean Ashton, Ben Rix, Michael Higdon and David Vaughan and went on to make 62 firstteam appearances during his first stint with the club. Bell helped the club win promotion back to the Championship in his first season, scoring the club’s goal of the season against Colchester United in August 2002. Lee made 22 appearances as they won automatic promotion when finishing runners-up to Wigan Athletic. Bell later enjoyed loan spells at Shrewsbury and Burton Albion before joining Mansfield Town in 2007 on a permanent basis. He joined Macclesfield in 2008 and spent two seasons at the Moss Rose before re-signing for Crewe
in the summer of 2010. During his second spell with the club, Bell scored two goals in 86 appearances and once again helped the club to a promotion in 2012. He made 36 appearances during the promotion winning season and his final appearance was a late introduction as a substitute in the Play-Off win over Cheltenham at Wembley. That summer, he moved on Burton Albion and was a big part of their promotion push in 2014, but on this occasion, he was on the losing side in the Play-Off Final as the Brewers lost 1-0 to Fleetwood Town.
After a brief loan spell at Macclesfield, he returned to the Moss Rose to see out his remaining playing days, while also coaching a young age group at the Crewe Academy. His rise as a coach now sees Lee as the Club’s First Time Manager.
ONE TO WATCH:
Another one to sign for the Railwaymen from Carlisle United is Rod McDonald, who’s vast experience has been evident to see over his career so far.
McDonald worked his way through non-league football upon his release from Oldham Athletic, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Despite only making 167 EFL appearances, the Liverpool born defender’s experience will prove vital for the club and its youngsters, guiding them through tough moments in tight games throughout this long season.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
WELCOME
The last time I had occasion to write about a representative body of Crewe Alexandra’s supporters – they didn’t have one! They do now. “The Railwaymen Supporter’s Association” is a relatively new body whose main objective is to safeguard the long term future of the club. Mark Beavan is the chair, supported by a board comprising Linda Flevill, Dave Tomlinson, Scott Kinnersley, Colin Higginson, Tim Tantram, Richard Benson, Matt Owen, Ian Affleck and Dave Slack. Crewe are nicknamed the Railwaymen because of the engine works built there in 1840. As a consequence, the town of Crewe grew up around it. Swindon and Doncaster have a similar history and background – and all three clubs are in our division. Perhaps EFL2 should be re-branded as “The Loco League” this season.
INTER-CITY BORO
On Saturday March 18th, we journey all the way to Carlisle United. It’s a 550 mile round trip to Brunton Park and our bus departs at 8:30am. At a cost of just £40 each for members, who of you will come with us to the largest football stadium in England that is not all-seated? Then, on Saturday April 1st, a much shorter journey beckons as the Stevenage “Six Hills Army” goes to Sixfields. Northampton is our destination. “Cobblers”, I hear you say – and you’d be right! £20 gets you there and back in the comfort and safety of the Boro Bus. Departing Broadhall Way at 12:00 noon, we need as many of you as can make the journey for this one.

TWIN FOXES
The Twin Foxes was a pub. It was situated in Rockingham Way, in Bedwell. Its claim to fame is that it was the very
first pub to be built in the New Town of Stevenage in1953. Its name derived from the infamous Stevenage twins, Ebenezer and Albert Fox. The pair were born in 1857 and were so alike that no-one could tell them apart – especially the police! The pub closed down in 2012. The height of its popularity could be attributed the early 1980’s, when it had a really great football team. So successful was Twin Foxes FC, that over half its squad comprised of the Stevenage Borough FC players!
The accompanying photograph depicts the Twin Foxes team in their heyday. Standing left to right: Brian Homer (Fixtures Sec.), Martin Westley, Mark Powell, Steve Armsby, Neil Jeffery, Martin Allinson, Keith Allinson, Peter Gittings, Terry Rooney and Albert McLellan (Trainer). Front row: Tim Jolly, Martin Gittings, Ronnie Lawson, Graham Aslett, Malcolm Ward and Colin Adcroft. Part of the squad absent from the photo included Danny Dance, Paul Bowgett, Gordon Bickerstaff, Micky Herring and Butch Roberts.
I’d love to know more about the Twin Foxes team of that period. If you can help, then do let me know at Lloyd@ SFCSA.co.uk
