ood afternoon and a warm welcome everyone to The Lamex Stadium for our first home game of the season against Matt Taylor’s Exeter City FC. It’s a new season, with a new kit, new sponsor and a new stand. There is a huge buzz and excitement around the town for the forthcoming season. The first league game of the season is always overrated in my opinion. You win it and might think you have you cracked it and if you lose, it is all doom and gloom. The reality is, you can’t win or lose a league in the first game of the season, although our performance against Salford was nowhere near where it should be. However, the injury crisis we had on our left side last week within the space of couple of days hampered us

Stevenage FC v Exeter City

massively. We had to change personnel the day before the game which did not help, but it did show that we do lack depth in the squad and we are still short in certain positions. This week the lads have recovered, prepared and worked very hard on the training ground and we feel more organised and re-energised to make sure we put on a great performance in front of our fans. It’s a busy first month for us and we are going to make sure that we leave it all on the pitch. Your support last week was outstanding despite the performance, so let’s get behind the lads again to ensure that we attack whatever is in front of us. Love the game,

warm welcome to the directors, officials, players and supporters of Exeter City. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home. Our season started on the wrong foot last Saturday. The occasion was always going to be all about Salford, with Sky TV and most of the media focused on their first game in the Football League and their famous sporting owners. What we should have done was spoil the party with a win, play the football we are capable of and show the TV audience exactly what we are about – pace, energy, skill and flair. As it happened, we didn’t show any of these attributes and it took us 57 minutes to have an attempt on their goal. Our management, players and the 608 travelling fans know that wasn’t good enough. I have lost a lot of opening games in 20 years at this club, so the result didn’t concern me too much but the performance did. Having said that, we had a lot of players out with injuries and we have a fierce

Stevenage FC v Exeter City

determination to up the tempo and show what we can do. Hopefully today we can deliver those attributes missing from last Saturday and provide you with an exciting, winning performance today. Our week leading up to this first home game has been about getting the stadium ready for this match. We took the decision to demolish all the old manual turnstiles in the North East corner and start again with fully automated digital turnstiles and new exit gates. That was an expensive process but, like all the upgrades we have done, it is in place for future generations. The North Stand is progressing nicely and by now you will no doubt be seeing the seats in the stand. We don’t expect to complete the disabled section, all of the various safety parameters under the stand and the perimeter walkway until early September, with the bar/ conferencing facility scheduled for October. It has been a hard, long slog but the final result will be worth it. Whether you are playing or watching today, enjoy the match!

ust 10 years ago Boro were opening their Blue Square Premier campaign off the back of another success at the newly constructed Wembley. For the second time in two years they had claimed the FA Trophy, this time thanks to a 2-0 victory over York City. They went to work on the 2009-2010 season with this draw over newly promoted Tamworth - and it was to prove the beginning of something special in the history of the home side.

ACADEMY

T

he summer has been a period of real change here at the academy. Jorden Gibson has moved on as Academy manager at Newport County. As developers of not only players but staff as well this is another sign of continued improvement here at Stevenage FC. In losing Jordan we have gained two outstanding members of staff in Alex Revell and Ronnie Henry. Alex comes on board as Head Coach of our U18 squad and Ronnie joins us as his assistant and also someone who will rub shoulders with our younger schoolboy academy players and guide and advise them. The first month of pre season has been really encouraging. Alex and Ronnie have picked up the baton really quickly. Steve Payne, the Academy Head of Coaching has really helped in their transition from player to coach. It’s been great to see so many feature in 1st team games and we were delighted to see Jack Smith feature in the squad Saturday.

Jack is someone we have been really pleased with and is a direct success of the platform we provide under our Academy squads. Jack joined our Shadow squads at U15 before breaking into the U16 squad. Staying with the scholars all our new recruits have settled Stevenage FC v Exeter City

in remarkably well and for the very first time we have completed a pre season without any muscular injuries. The scholars can take great credit for this as they came back in excellent shape however the hard work and diligent planning of David Bass, our Head of Athletic Development, has seen some really big gains in this area Further down the supply line we have been delighted to secure Woollams Park in St Albans as a base for schoolboy academy games on a Sunday. As the academy structure as a whole gains momentum it was really important to secure better facilities. And so today. Not only is it the first home game of the season for the 1st team it is also the first League game of the season for our U18 and U16 players who entertain Gillingham. One final plus has been the Club’s decision to allow the U18s to use Bragbury End, the 1st team’s training ground, for their home fixtures this season. This is a big thing for our scholars to play their games in such an environment and hopefully their performances will match the unbelievable facilty.

WOMEN A WORD FROM THE GAFFER… Pre-season seems to have flown by. We have our last friendly this weekend away at Oxford City before the league kicks off again on Sunday 18th August. So far I have been relatively pleased with how it has gone. It is always difficult at this time of year when players have their holidays but overall it has been positive and we have taken on two excellent coaches in James Hepworth & Matt Goddard. As well as coach recruitment, we have been able to retain 90% of the current squad from last year which is a huge positive for the club. We have also added some youth and experience to both the first team and development

side, which you can read more about below. Another big positive is that we have three players returning from ACL injuries sustained last season that will hopefully be back in the team very soon. With this you can see there has been a huge lift around the training ground with attitude and work rate in particular.

There won’t be any easy games this season, so we will take the same approach as always – play each game as it comes and look no further than the next one. The coaches and players can’t wait to get season started and we hope to see many Stevenage FC supporters down at the County Ground this season.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME I am pleased to welcome the fans and supporters of Exeter City to Stevenage this afternoon. It seems like only last week that we played this fixture – (well, it was our ‘last but one’ league home game here at the Lamex). Good to see you guys again, and thank you for making the long journey here to us in Hertfordshire.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION As you know, Supporter’s Direct and the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) have recently merged to become the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA). This is the new national body to which all members of the Stevenage Supporters’ Association are affiliated. I am the SA’s delegate to the FSA, attending Southern Region meetings (for all ‘southern’ based clubs) and EFL 2 meetings. I’ll keep you appraised of current topics the FSA are dealing with and you’re always welcome to accompany me to the meetings, the next of which is on September 22nd – venue tba.

BORO BUS Got any “O”’s? Always makes me laugh when I think of that famous “Two Ronnie’s” sketch (only relevant to Boro fans of a certain age though). Well, we’re off to see the “O”s next Saturday. Who of you will come to see the Boro at Brisbane Road? Get thee there with Boro the Bear on our bus which departs the Lamex at mid-day. Only £10 for our members and £15 for

Stevenage FC v Exeter City

non-members, door-to-door service with your friendly host, John Carroll.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS Members this season will not only receive the traditional old photo ID card, but a new one issued by the club. This new type will have on it a bar code, allowing members to access numerous benefits which the Supporters’ Association is able to provide. Don’t forget, members this year are entitled to a free commemorative lapel badge depicting the association’s 25th anniversary – very collectable.

WELCOME

Guide to new signings:

Going into his second season in charge of Exeter City, manager Matt Taylor has continued to mould his squad after making nine signings ahead of the 2019/20 season.

MATT TAYLOR

LEWIS WARD

and the Grecians have brought in Jonny Maxted, from League One side Accrington Stanley, and Lewis Ward from Reading, who spent time on loan with Forest Green Rovers last season. City also acted to bring in some defensive experience in the form of former Yeovil Town defender Gary Warren, and Tom Parkes who moved to Devon from Carlisle United. Young defender Robbie Cundy joined the Grecians on loan from Bristol City soon after agreeing a deal to move to Ashton Gate fresh from an impressive season with Bath City last year. Youngster Noah Smerdon also joined the City

NICKY AJOSE

Their first recruit came in the form of Nigel Atangana, a dynamic central midfielder who opted to swap Cheltenham for Exeter early in the summer. The Frenchman suffered an achilles injury midway through last season and is soon to be fully fit for the Grecians. The club heavily recruited in the goalkeeping department after Christy Pym and James Hamon departed, 28 | www.stevenagefc.com

ranks but has been sent on loan to gain experience. One of the club’s most notable signings of the summer came in the form of Nicky Ajose, who agreed to join the Grecians after departing Charlton Athletic. The striker has a great deal of Football League experience and has scored goals for a number of clubs with the Grecians hoping that he can help push the club towards the top end of League Two this season. Another striking recruit saw City bring in Alex Fisher who joined after leaving Yeovil Town following their relegation last season. Fisher turned out 43 times for the Glovers last season and found the net eight times.

HISTORY OF ECFC: Founded in 1901 as a local team known as St Sidwell’s United, the club changed its name to Exeter City Association Football Club in 1904. The club’s early history is notable for their tour of South America in 1914. They played a number of matches against sides from Argentina and Brazil, and they became the first side to play against the Brazilian national team. As a founder member of the Football League’s Third Division the club have spent much of their history playing in the third and fourth tiers of English football. Recent successes have seen the Grecians win promotion from the Conference in the 2007/08 season before winning a successive promotion the following season to put the club in League One. Following Stevenage FC v Exeter City

TOM PARKES

relegation to League Two in 2012, the club have remained a competitive side in the fourth division, getting to two consecutive play-off finals at Wembley stadium but just missing out on both occasions under long serving manager, Paul Tisdale. After two promotions, Tisdale departed after 12 years of service as Matt Taylor took the role after some impressive work with the club’s under-23 side. Taylor’s first campaign in charge of City saw them finish in ninth place last season. With wholesale changes at the club from staff to players, the City manager did excellently to compete towards the top of League Two for much of the season, but they were unable to confirm a playoff place as they missed out by just one point. In his playing days, Taylor began his career with non-league side Burscough before going on to play for Team Bath and then joined the Grecians and helpes them to back-to-back promotions. He then spent time with Charlton Athletic before joining the likes of Bradford City, Cheltenham Town and Newport County. www.stevenagefc.com | 29
