THE CHAIRMAN
G
PHIL WALLACE
ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Hartlepool United. Our opponents today sit in a 7th place play-off spot and we sit 21st - yet a win today would see us just two points behind them, which is indicative of how tight – and pointless - a league table is after just nine games. After a great start to the season and inspiring early displays against higher opposition, it’s fair to say that the team and management lost their way for a while. This happens. We are mostly a new squad and management have to find the right blend to deliver consistent inspiring performances and, more importantly, consistent winning. We’ve been focused on collective team spirit, hard work and making sure we had a tight bunch of lads – and winning at all costs seems to have suffered. The European Ryder Cup team showed that you can have a great bonding, a great team spirit, have great talent, work hard – yet find you get beaten up when it comes to winning. It’s now time for us to start winning. I believe that, to some extent, our recent results have been part of our learning curve. A curve that lasts for 46 league games and, hopefully, a lot of cup games. I would hope that our players have learnt a lot from recent performances and know it’s not been anywhere near good enough. Not for themselves, not for the management, not for me and, especially, not for our fans. Our management team have one deliverable from the board that is nonnegotiable. It’s not ‘win the cup’, it’s not win the league, it’s not even win promotion. It’s ‘make us proud’. If that one main requisite is delivered, then everything else falls into place. We will get the games where we drop points unfairly and games where we win them unexpectedly. But if we – as fans, and
www.stevenagefc.com
especially myself as the owner – are able to feel proud of our team and proud of the results, then everything is good in the world. Our club off the pitch is stable. We made a huge investment in our stadium facilities with a £2 million new stand, but we’ve managed to do that without the balance sheet falling over and repaid all of the fantastic fans that put their trust and faith in us by providing part of the funds to build it. A terrific example of us all working together to create a great Club. Let’s all carry that on to matchdays and get behind the lads. Let them see and hear that we are one, that we are willing to be tolerant, but that we want to be proud of our team. Just as we were all proud of our U17s that beat Crystal Palace in the U17 London Cup in the week. We always knew that age group was the best we’ve had for years – so many top players in that squad. Well done lads! Enjoy the match!

f it’s a Boro archive game then there’s every chance it features a return to the club from GW. And true to form this match against Hartlepool marked the third coming of Graham Westley as he moved on from his sacking at Preston a couple of months earlier and led Stevenage to this win. These were of course the heady League One days and it was Pools who were struggling at the wrong end
of the table. That didn’t mean this was one way traffic, home keeper Steve Arnold was tested by Charlie Wyke, while James Dunne went close with a header at the other end. The game was clinched however just 14 minutes from time, and it was Max Ehmer, defender on loan from QPR who proved to be the difference, slotting past Scott Flinders after latching on to a deflected effort. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 02 OCTOBER It’s not a great day in history to be a Boro’ fan. As the nights start to draw in, October is the month where the season really begins to take shape. But its second day has, more often than not, brought disappointment – not delight. Today is also a day when we tend to be on our travels. Only two of the nine times we’ve turned out on this date have been at home. And neither are especially worth writing home about; the first being a dire 4-1 reverse at the hands of Long Buckby back in 1982, while the second saw a clinical Wycombe Wanderers side turn us over as we adapted to a new existence as a Football League club in 2010. Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom. Three out of nine isn’t a brilliant return, but it does at least show that we do know how to win on this date. Gitts got both goals on this day in 1993 as we came home from Hendon with three more league points, while near neighbours Baldock Town fell by the wayside in our 1996 FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round replay. It was the third of nine FA Cup ties we played that season; a run that took us all the way to Round Three at Birmingham City.
1982 Stevenage Borough 1-4 Long Buckby, United Counties League Premier Division (Barrett) 1993 Hendon 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Gittings 2) 1996 Baldock Town 1-2 Stevenage Borough, FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round replay (Crawshaw, Sodje) 1999 Forest Green Rovers 3-2 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Alford 2) 2001 Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference 2004 York City 3-1 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Flack) 2010 Stevenage 0-2 Wycombe Wanderers, npower League Two 2012 Notts County 1-2 Stevenage, npower League One (Akins, Shroot) 2018 Exeter City 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two
Our third win on this date is a little more recent – and came at Meadow Lane in 2012. Robin Shroot scored deep into stoppage time to claim a 2-1 win over Notts County. Apart from those three victories, all our other results on this date have gone the wrong way from a Boro’ perspective. So, can we do today what they’ve not yet done on 2 October and pick up a win at home? It’ll be a little bit of history…

YOU AGAIN? HARTLEPOOL UNITED With the greatest respect to our guests today, we were delighted that Pools made it up through the National League playoffs last season - not Torquay United. And it’s quite simply because of our comparative head-to-head records. In contrast to our struggles against the Gulls, our history against Pools is much better. In fact, there’s more than one previous occasion on which we’ve been in need of a win – and found it at their hands. Pools were on the wrong side of the result when Graham Westley bagged the first win of his third spell in charge (no fooling, it was a 1-0 victory on 01 April 2013). And the side from Victoria Park handed Teddy Sheringham his first win as Boro’ manager as well (2-0, 22 August 2015). Not to mention a 2-1 victory at their place on 09 February 2016 that provided our first League Two win in nine outings. And that’s before we even mention the time we put six past them on 03
www.stevenagefc.com
September 2016; Boro’ having made a lessthan-ideal start to the 2016-7 season. All in all, our 11 previous games against Pools – 10 league and one FA Cup – have provided eight wins and two draws; one of which was our first-ever fixtures on 20 August 2011 when a late Scott Laird goal capped Boro’s comeback from two goals down. Our solitary defeat, however, came in our most recent outing together. Despite being saved by a firsthalf penalty miss, Boro’ still slumped to a 2-0 defeat on 21 January 2017 against a side heading for non-league. More now than ever, perhaps, we can only hope that result wasn’t the beginning of a new trend – and that Boro’ can revive old habits to dig out a win that we so badly need right about now…

ACADEMY
A
cademy Day is always a special day in the season and today once again gives us the opportunity to celebrate all the work that goes on at the Academy across all the different ages starting at our pre academy for U7s through to our scholars and EDP players at U18. It’s also a chance for the Academy players and staff to sit together and watch the players they aspire to replace in the future at first hand. Since the last opportunity to celebrate Academy Day we have certainly pushed on and made great strides in terms of player development and operationally getting bigger and better to support the players and parents in their considerable efforts week in week out. Our season has already started to yield great progress with some outstanding individual performances across the age groups and some fantastic team performances as well. Certainly the last few weeks has been really pleasing with the PDP squad (U18s) and the top end YDP squad (U16s) putting in some excellent shifts against some really good sides. Watching those games makes us all within the academy realise how
20
much better we are becoming and just how many talented players are coming through at various ages. Certainly it’s very accurate to say we have never been so strong at bringing players through from U16 to scholars. Everyone’s challenge is to get more players into the 1st team. Finally to top off a fantastic few weeks it would be unfair not to mention the absolutely outstanding performance our U17s - a mix of 1st year scholars, U16s and U15s put in on Wednesday night just gone in the London Cup v Crystal Palace. Watched on closely by senior 1st team and Club staff the young boys put in one of the best performances I have seen from an academy side (and I’ve seen a few!) in beating an older Palace side 2-0 at the excellent Shefford and Campton FC under the lights. It would be great to get some support for the boys on nights like this and gives you the supporter an early insight into what is coming through. Enjoy the game today and on behalf of the whole Academy thank you to the Board, 1st team and Club staff who are unwavering in their support of what we do. ROBBIE O’KEEFE – Academy Manager

WOMEN Aisling White defender
Ais, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey to the Stevenage FCW First Team? So, I’m 17 and an A-Levels student. I first signed for Stevenage when I was 15 but I couldn’t play until I was 16. I spent a season with the Development Team, which unfortunately got cut short due to coronavirus. The 2020/21 season, I started with the first team but unfortunately got injured a month in and then ever since coming back in April; after the lockdown and injury I’ve been with the first team. How have you found the step up to the first team? It’s been good, obviously it can be quite daunting being such a young player and stepping up to the first team but the girls are really welcoming, so it makes that side of things really easy. Physically, it’s definitely a lot more challenging and it’s a lot faster but I think I’m adjusting. What challenges have you faced to get to where you are right now? Obviously lockdown was pretty hard on everyone. I think for me, injury came at a pretty bad time. I’d just settled into the first team so getting injured was not ideal. Trying to find the motivation to do rehab and to get fit again during lockdown was quite challenging but I think it’s ok. As a young player how do you deal with the pressure that comes with football
www.stevenagefc.com
and getting results? I think I put a lot of pressure on myself; being so young I feel like I need to prove myself. I think once you’re on the pitch it doesn’t really matter how old you are. Dealing with that pressure I just think you’ve got to focus on yourself, know that you’re going to make mistakes and just learn from them. How do you prepare yourself for each game? I’m not really superstitious or anything. I don’t have like a set routine; I just make sure I have a good breakfast, get a good night’s sleep and have my pre-match playlist on in the car. What have you learned about yourself from your performances so far this season? Going from a centre midfielder to a centre back, obviously that’s quite daunting changing to a new position when you’ve played one position for so long but I think I’ve settled in quite well and the coaches have been fantastic in helping me to adapt. Also, playing alongside players like Lucy has been quite helpful and she’s taught me so much already, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. What are your goals for the rest of the season? Personally, just to enjoy it. I’m hoping to go to university next year so this will probably be my last season with the girls. So make the most of it and enjoy it. FOLLOW THE WOMEN:

Former Fleet Street journalist Paul Fry launches his second book, Town’s Got Talent at Stevenage FC on Friday October 8, in the 1976 Lounge at 7.30pm with an evening of fun football chat. It is free to attend and there will be a bar. There will be a smattering of people who feature in the book there on the night to field questions about their careers in football. Town’s Got Talent puts the spotlight on the sportspeople who put the town on the map, and is a written companion to the Leisure Centre mural. Paul, who grew up in the town and whose first job was with the Stevenage Gazette and is a former Boro programme editor, has profiled dozens of sportspeople - but the book is also a social history of the town, charting its growth through sports achievement. It also illustrates how there is so much more to the town than Sir Lewis Hamilton. There are stories of people overcoming adversity, fulfilling their potential, and how life events such as 9/11, the Munich Massacre and the 2005 Tsunami brushed up against the lives of some. There are difficult subjects such as racism, sexual inequality
and drug cheats brought into focus. There are sections on the brilliant coaches and volunteers as well as on up and coming sports stars. There is even a Bond villain! Town’s Got Talent is out on October 1 and will be on sale at the club shop for £20 and you can get copies signed for free on the night. Come and make a night of it. Boro feature large in the book, with their rise and promotion to the Football League charted by Graham Westley, Ronnie Henry, Mark Roberts and Paul Fairclough. Luke Norris, Neil Trebble and James Dilnutt also feature, as do Jim Briscoe and chairman Phil Wallace. It is the first book to feature so much for Stevenage football fans - but there are also profiles of Sir Lewis Hamilton, Ashley Young, Ian Poulter, Roland Butcher, Kevin Phillips, Graham Poll, and many more. Plus interviews with up and coming stars Dan Ballard and Nathan Tella.

The Pools find themselves back in League Two after they ended their four year stay in the National League with a win on penalties over Torquay in the play-offs in June. Despite coming in late to the league set-up, they started the season on fire, winning three of their first four with successes over Crawley, Walsall and Carlisle. They did however go out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle at home to Crewe and have also lost on penalties to Carlisle in EFL Trophy action.
DID YOU KNOW? •H artlepool have been an ever present at their Victoria Park home since they were founded in 1908. • Hartlepool once tried to sue the German government. Pools were annoyed, to say the least, when part of a stand was bombed by a Zeppelin in 1916 during the first world war. The Germans were having none of it however. • Hartlepool stayed in the Football League set up for 89 consecutive seasons before relegation in 2017 but they never played in the top two tiers in that time and have never claimed a divisional title.
Stevenage FC v Hartlepool United
THE BOSS Born in Chester, Dave Challinor began his playing days in the colours of Tranmere Rovers where he came through the ranks to develop into a hugely popular centre-back at Prenton Park. Allied to his competitive and no-nonsense nature as a defender, he also caught the eye due to his enormous throw-in – in 1998 he claimed the World Record for the longest thrown when he hurled a ball 46.34 metres to beat the record held by Andy Legg. Challinor enjoyed success with Tranmere, playing for them in the 2000 League Cup Final, before Stockport County stumped up a fee of £120,000 to take him to Edgeley Park in January 2002. Challinor was able to play part-time and became skipper of Colwyn Bay with whom he reached the play-offs two seasons in succession and secured promotion in 2010 after which he was appointed as Player/ Manager of the club. It was in November 2011 that Challinor was tempted away to join AFC Fylde as boss and his magic touch continued as they were promoted from Northern Premier League Division One North as champions in his season in charge. He then led them a third place finish in the National League in 2017/18 only to fall at the play-off hurdle, while last term he took them to Wembley where they won the FA Trophy.
ONE TO WATCH 35-year-old Gary Liddle is now in his third spell at the club where he began his career. He made the first of his initial 247 appearances for the Pools in 2006 after a spell in the Middlesbrough academy. In six years he was a mainstay of the side before finally moving on to enjoy spells with Notts County, Bradford, Chesterfield and Carlisle. After a 15 game loan spell he resigned on a full deal and played in the play-off win over Torquay in a period where he topped more than 300 career games for the side. He has made eight appearances so far this season.

LATEST NEWS HARTLEPOOL Good to see Hartlepool back in town this afternoon. Hope they’ve brought H’Angus their mascot along to team up with our own Boro Bear. Hartlepool United FC Supporters’ Association have their own independent, stand-alone facility at the Victoria Park stadium. Aptly called “The Corner Flag”, the bar and club-house is managed and operated by a volunteer committee. “Hart of our Club 1908” is a dedicated supporters group whose number include Terry Hanlon, Rachael Cartwright, John Sutheran, Mike Smithies, Mark Dolphin, Neil West, Paul Shears, Paul Barnfather, and club chaplain Chris Stuttard. Hope to catch up with some of you this afternoon.

FAN FOCUS This afternoon we say “hi” to Bobby and Charlie Hollinger. Barnsley-born twins, they live with mum (Laura) and dad (Rob) in Swallownest, Sheffield. Both Charlie and Bobby were registered on the Baby Boro scheme within a week of being born, and we look forward to welcoming them to the Lamex as soon as they are able.
Book your places by contacting John Carroll on (01438) 814285 between 6:00pm and 9:00pm. Or, CLICK HERE to book online (booking fee applies). Sadly, the away support for the SA bus has been sadly lacking thus far this season as each excursion has failed to ‘break even’. Members should be aware that the committee are reviewing the continuation of this facility with a view to its ongoing viability. LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
