collection of saves, blocks and missed opportunities prevented the Welsh side from going ahead. Stevenage had two off target attempts but as the minutes ticked by it appeared that Boro’s mission would be to hold on to what they had. However, against all expectations it was Stevenage who snatched all three points as Michael Timlin floated in a corner in that was met by a powerful, low-driven header by sub Alex Revell; the header was simply too powerful for Newport goalkeeper, Joe Day, to stop and claimed the spoils.

18 FCSTEVENAGE V AFCCOUNTYNEWPORT BORO HISTORY

Into mid-September we go and it’s fair to suggest that Boro’ have cause for confidence against our opponents today. In total, we’ve turned out seven times on this date in history. And we’ve lost just once; a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Herts rivals on 13 September 2003. The perilous flip side to that argument is that we’ve a fine record to protect on this date and we won’t want to be stung by Newport County like we were with the Bees. There’s no time to dwell on the negative, however. That’s because there’s one result on this date that stands out more than most, don’t you think? It’s now 11 years since we had the pleasure of the fallen giants of Sheffield Wednesday for a League One clash at the Lamex. For us, the 5-1 battering we dished out that day (five different scorers too) is still one of our bestever results – certainly since we gained promotion to the Football League. It’s not the only time we’ve hit five on this date either. Go way back to 1980 and we hammered Sharnbrook in a United Counties League Cup Round One tie on the road. Elsewhere, Kiwi striker Tim Stevens grabbed two of his three goals for Boro’ as we won at Kiddy in 1997 and Darius Charles was the match-winner at home to the Shrews in 2014. That latest result actually makes it three straight home wins on 13 September over the years. Can we make it a fourth?

IT’S NEWPORT COUNTY AGAIN…

Boro’s record against the Exiles is quite a temperamental one. And there can be no getting away from the fact that our return from last season’s endeavours against the Welsh side rank as the worst we’ve managed; “rank” undoubtedly the operative word there. After enduring a humiliating five-goal defeat at Rodney Parade in October 2021, the Exiles came out on top at the Lamex by two goals in March.

By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.uk

In what remains our biggest-ever win against Newport County to date, Boro’ owed a lot to hattrick hero Matt Godden for the three points in this encounter. It was a fixture made all the more interesting by the fact that it saw GW back at the Lamex, albeit in charge of the visitors. It wasn’t a happy time for them either. With Boro’ claiming all three points, the Exiles remained five points from safety as we inflicted an eighth straight league defeat on them. Us? Well, we only moved up two places

another ex-Newport lad who then went on to taste titlewinning success with us. In reverse, however, there are Yemi Odubade and Eddie Odhiambo. Both lads moved to Rodney Parade after claiming their league winners’ medals with Boro’; Odhamibo in 2010 and Odubade in 2011 on loan. Oh, Jefferson Louis has played for both clubs too. But isn’t that now true of half the teams we’ve ever played?

It feels like players have only recently taken a career path that includes both North Hertfordshire and South Wales. But Steve Berry is maybe the earliest – and a notable exception too. to the dizzying heights of 13th. But we wouldn’t say no to a repeat result here.

STEVENAGE FC3

It’s now five without a win and four without a goal against the Exiles. So, it certainly puts our record of six wins from a total of 15 meetings in perspective. The Exiles are now up to five wins, with four ending in stalemate. New Year’s Day 2019 is the last time we tasted victory against them. Alex Revell got the goal that day, while Kurtis Guthrie had himself an early bath. Two Boro’ strikers, two very different days.

Stevenage FCW found themselves on the opposite end of their previous result as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at Royston Town FCW. Goals from Amy Gooderham and Becky Shephard were not enough for The ‘Boro and the watching crowd of 106 were treated to a hotly contested match. Stevenage started well and Gooderham saw an early effort saved by Amy Martin. It would take another 15 minutes for her to get another decent opportunity and this one was not squandered. A free kick was awarded to ‘Boro which was swung in towards the far post towards Vicky Neal who headed the ball downwards. the half remaining. Dionne Manning was adjudged to have committed a foul near the right hand corner of the area, Annie Georgiou sent a left footed inswinger that Celine Ray got a hand to, only to see the ball drop over the line.

Neal had a good opportunity which was turned behind for a corner and it looked as though both sides would go into the break with the score level. However, ‘Boro gave away a free kick for offside which was pumped direct to the Town front line. Natalie Richardson came up with the ball and from the edge of the box, unleashed a powerful, rising shot that Ray could not keep out and the ball nestled into the back of the net Gooderham had the best moment of the early second half as she broke down the left side and rolled a ball across Martin that went agonisingly wide and narrowly avoided the outstretched foot of Shephard. A penalty shout was turned down for Stevenage and both sides dug in trying to force the game. It was with seven minutes of the half remaining that Shephard levelled the game. After a neat interchange with Shianne Swarres, she let loose a right footed shot from near the away dugout that sailed over Martin. The joy was shortlived, as four minutes later Ray punched clear a free kick that sat up nicely for Richardson outside the area to thunder her volley clean and true and break Stevenage hearts.

Newport County appointed Cardiff City’s first team coach James Rowberry as their new manager in October 2021. He took over just under a year ago with Wayne Hatswell in caretaker charge since the departure of Mike Flynn who had been in the hot seat for five years. Newport-born Rowberry was a youth player at the club and previously coached in County’s academy.
