STEVENAGE
COMMUNITY TRUST
S
tevenage Football Club are pleased to announce a fantastic new partnership with Stevenage Community Trust this season. The Trust has been chosen as their main beneficiary for the current campaign and the focal point of this project is a match on Saturday February 1 at home against Leyton Orient in which Stevenage will play in a specially designed Stevenage Community Trust kit. This will be a first for the club, they have never previously utilised their third kit for an outside organisation and this will provide massive UK-wide publicity for the Trust and for the activities which they undertake. Only 250 of these limited-edition shirts have been produced and they will be sold to raise funds for Stevenage Community Trust, with the profits made from the sale of these shirts donated directly to the Trust. Shirts worn by the players themselves in the game on February 1 will also be available as they will be auctioned off at the end of the season for supporters to bid for. Both parties are now calling on the people of the town, supporters of the Trust and the Boro to back this initiative in a number of ways - the simplest will be to buy a shirt to keep and wear it at the Boro!
Commenting on the project, Alex Tunbridge, Chief Executive of Stevenage FC said: “We are delighted to be supporting Stevenage Community Trust by raising awareness and funds through wearing our first ever third kit at our match against Leyton Orient. We hope the club’s supporters and members of the local community will show their support for the fantastic work the Trust carries out in our town by purchasing a shirt and supporting the campaign.” Sharon Brown, vice-chairman of Stevenage Community Trust said: “This link between ourselves and Stevenage FC shows just how powerful organisations and businesses can be when they work together for their community. The project to produce a third shirt is unique in the Football League and at a local level will go a long way to help our work to support charitable groups and individuals at greatest need in the town and the surrounding villages. We are grateful to the club for working with us in this groundbreaking scheme.” Shirts costing just £40 are available to purchase from the club shop. You can also purchase shirts using the following online club link.

t was 10 years ago and Boro went into another home clash with local rivals Kettering with their eyes on the big prize. A charge to the Football League was well underway and Boro kept their nerve in this one in front of a crowd of 2,136. It was a double strike from Stacy Long that saw the home side to the three points and with big names at the back such as Day, Henry, Roberts and Ashton it was little wonder the Poppies couldn’t get back into the game.

ON THIS DAY Saturday January 25, 2014 Stevenage 0 Everton 4 Some big cubs are like buses, you’ve never played them in your entire history and suddenly you face them twice in the space of five months. So it was with Everton. Boro had narrowly lost 2-1 at Goodison earlier in the season in the League Cup and six years ago to the day they were paired together in the FA Cup. Alas this time Everton proved to be much more clinical, even though it was a game in which Boro did have their chances. Two first-half goals from Naismith and strikes from Heitinga and Gueye after the interval meant that there was to be no giantkilling in this cup clash. ACADEMY
I
would like to start by wishing the first team all the best in this afternoon’s fixture against Plymouth. We travelled to Peterborough this morning and hopefully can kick start the day with 3 points. It’s been a while since I’ve given an update on academy life, and there has been lots of positive things going on at Shephalbury Sports Academy to mention. Last week’s victory against Gillingham secured our place in Merit League 1. This means the best 6 from the south east and west go into a merit league, and play each other. We were in fact 2-0 down with 10 minutes to go, Jack Moriarty scored a brace and Luis Fernandez scored a last minute winner to send us jubilantly into the top league. We have trained hard to achieve this and for our lads to show excellent resilience to come back proved to me what a good group we have. The regular under 16’s performances were also encouraging and we gave another debut to an U15 who has been performing very well with Ieuan Lewis’s Youth Development Phase. This next merit league allows us the opportunity to give second years the experiences of senior football on loan, and allow us to start integrating more and more U15/16 into the squad, the opportunity therefore to also play in the U18 EFL Youth Alliance league. This leads me on nicely to work experience and loans. Joe Leslie has been thriving with Biggleswade FC and has scored 4 in the last 6 games. Both myself and Robbie O’Keefe watched Joe put in a Man of the Match performance against Barton Rovers Stevenage FC v Plymouth Argyle
on Tuesday. The relationship with Biggleswade FC has been excellent and I would personally like to thank the club, and especially Dave Northfield for the way the club has looked after him. Jamie Jellis has recently signed his professional contract after impressing on loan at Aylesbury and Hitchin Town. Jamie has had it tough with injuries etc, and I believe not only his attitude and performances warranted this reward, but the outstanding work by our Fitness Coach Dave Bass has enabled Jamie and other players to get physically stronger. Liam Smyth and Jack Smith joined a former apprentice Charley O’Keefe at Braintree Town FC In the conference south, and have started and played full games since joining. Our Academy Manager Robbie has been watching them closely and the feedback has been nothing but positive. Liam scored in their 4-1 fixture over Oxford City last weekend. Today they face an on-form team in Slough! I have to mention what it’s like working with Ronnie Henry on a daily basis. Ronnie has been a huge asset to the academy and especially to the Professional Development Phase. I believe the expertise already in place, along with Ronnie’s enthusiasm, knowledge and love for the game, means our players in the academy are in safe hands. Finally, let’s get behind the lads and get another 3 points on the table. Come on Boro! @stevenageyouth - follow for all updates on the academy including today’s game v Peterborough.

FOUNDATION
T
he Joy of Moving Move and Learn programme is a free 6-week programme which is aimed at year 5 students. The programme is designed to give the year 5 students an insight on how beneficial physical activity can be and how to live a balanced, active lifestyle. Over the course of six weeks, children from year 5 will spend time in the classroom with Stevenage FC Foundation club coaches, learning about physical activity, body and mind, eatwell guide, meal planning, hydration and joy of moving through participating in interactive activities. This is then followed by a practical session dedicated to the content delivered within the classroom. Since the start of the academic year in September 2019, Stevenage FC Foundation have engaged with a total of 600 children across 10 schools. As well as taking part in the Joy of Moving programme, the children are offered a free u12 ticket to a Stevenage FC game and get the opportunity to participate in the Kids Zone before the game. Before the end of the academic year we will be engaging with a further

360 children from schools across Hertfordshire. The Joy of Moving programme has been a huge success in Year 5. I have been able to observe both the theory and practical sessions, all children have been engaged and learning is taking place in an active and fun way. All members of staff from Stevenage FC have been professional, punctual and motivational when delivering their lessons. Children look forward to the sessions taking place and are keen to impress. Ben Longland Watchlytes P.E Co-Ordinator
I think the Joy of Moving programme is the perfect programme to allow children to understand how to live an active and balanced lifestyle whilst appreciating the benefits of physical activity. Having delivered the programme on numerous occasions I can see the impact it can have on a young child’s life. This can be something as small as changing their diets to include more healthier options or finding a newfound love of physical activity. WOMEN
S
tevenage FC Women continued the hunt for silverware last weekend and after a tough battle booked their place in the final of the Herts County Cup. In a home clash against Watford Development, Boro started the game on the front foot in a competition in which they have made six successive final appearances. Although Stevenage created several chances they still had to be switched on defensively as Watford had a very young and quick team going forward. The hosts finally managed to break the deadlock following a fine through ball from Gemma Biggadike to Ashleigh Deacon who provided a good finish placing the ball in the bottom corner. It was a lead which was fully deserved but play became tougher as the pitch was taking a turn for the worse as both teams started to find it difficult to get any flow or quickness in their play. Ahead by the single goal at the break, the second half mirrored the first half with the vast majority of play being in the Watford half. Alas through a combination of twice hitting the bar, their keeper making several decent saves and some poor decision-making, Stevenage just couldn’t find that second goal, That, however, was until with 20 minutes left Amy Makewell found herself in space on the edge of the box and she got her shot away which hit the back of the net. With a two goal lead the game management was superb from the hosts doing what they needed to do and see the game out. Stevenage FC Women now face Watford FC Ladies U-23 in a repeat of last season’s final. Stevenage FC v Plymouth Argyle

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME Virginia Pike is chair of the Argyle Fans Trust. Virginia is ably supported by board members Tim Chown (sec.), Roger Willis and John Lloyd in her duties. The Trust (who’s ‘proper’ title is the Plymouth Argyle Supporters’ Society) was constituted in 2010 as the official voice of Argyle supporters. Welcome all. Curious to note that both Plymouth and Exeter are riding high in the league, Swindon are top whilst the likes of Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham are also “in with a shout”. What is occurring in the West Country this season? All it needs is for Yeovil to return to the EFL and the Western Power House shall be a force to be reckoned with.
LEGENDS DAY On March 28th we are home to Scunthorpe. The Club have also deemed this a “Legends Day” where all past 1st team players of the club, be it “Borough”, “Town”, or “Athletic”,
Stevenage FC v Plymouth Argyle
are welcomed as guests. This is a hugely exciting opportunity to engage with all those who have served our town in a senior football capacity. Our club is 44 years old. Athletic lasted for just 8 years (1968 to 1976) and Stevenage Town started in the reign of Queen Victoria. It is right and proper that we remember all those who have contributed to football in our town and I’m anxious to support this initiative with a view to considering the notion of a “former players’ association”. Appeal: If YOU know of anyone who played for Stevenage in years gone by, then ask them to get in touch. CLICK HERE for more information and to contact Lindsay here at the club. You have no idea how pleased I am that the club - our club – is administering such an event.

WELCOME
DOMINIC TELFORD
THE BASICS… Argyle returned to Sky Bet League Two this season after finishing level on points with Wimbledon on 50 and were relegated on goal difference as three goals separated them and their nearest rivals. The club are no strangers to the Football League having not been relegated from England’s four major leagues since being promoted in the 1920s. Since then, Argyle have won nine promotions throughout the leagues, but have never played in the top division with their highest finish coming in 2008 - under manager Paul Sturrock, the team finished 10th in the Championship.
EOIN DOYLE
LATEST FORM… The Pilgrims certainly have eyes on an immediate return to League One, as they sit six points behind 1st place Swindon Town in fourth, but currently have two games in hand over their rivals. The team have won six games out of their last seven having come unstuck at home against Swindon when Dominic Telford, gave the home side the lead in the first-half then lost their advantage before half-time with things going from bad to worse after 32 | www.stevenagefc.com
Stevenage FC v Plymouth Argyle
ANTONI SARCEVIC
the restart, when the league’s top goalscorer Eoin Doyle snatched the victory inside the final 15 minutes for the visitors.
STAR MAN… Plymouth’s number 7, Antoni Sarcevic, has been an influential figure in central midfield with his attacking runs and eye for a goal; he is currently the club’s top goalscorer this season with five goals in the league. The 27-year-old is now into his fourth season at Home Park having signed from Shrewsbury in January 2017 and can draw on past experiences in gaining promotion from League Two with Fleetwood in 2014 – when they defeated Burton Albion 1-0 in the PlayOff Final as Sarcevic scored 13 goals in all competitions.
RYAN LOWE
THE GAFFER… Ryan Lowe was appointed Manager at the start of the season after Derek Adams was dismissed following relegation. Lowe, who was an explayer at Gigg Lane, guided Bury to their tremendous promotion to League One after finishing 2nd in the league below last campaign; he was named Manager of the Month on three occasions. The 41-year-old scored over 150 goals in his playing career in which the former striker enjoyed various promotions with Sheffield Wednesday from League One in 2012, Bury from League Two in 2011 and 2015 along with Shrewsbury Town from the Conference National in 2004. Lowe has also played for Chester City, Crewe, MK Dons and Tranmere before finishing his career at Bury. by Taylor Catton Stevenage FC v Plymouth Argyle
