irstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Rochdale and Robbie Stockdale to this afternoon’s game at The Lamex. Robbie is a good young manager, and everyone can see how he has turn it around in the last two to three months. Their results have been very impressive, and they play a lovely brand of football. We all know we should have got at least something from the Oldham game, if not three points. We were disappointed on the long journey back from Exeter where I don’t think we played well, but maybe could have come away on the day with a share of the spoils. At Colchester we had to withstand a good start from them, as expected with their form of four wins from the last six. We ran out deserved winners, but Friday takes on a new bag. We are fresh and have prepared as best we can for what will be a tough game at The Lamex. We received a brilliant
response from supporters in the town to turn up in good numbers against Oldham, and we need them again. This is another battle in the middle of a war. There is great unity in this group. It is the responsibility of myself and the staff to ensure that we enhance that ingredient plus positivity every day we are together. We know our supporters can be the twelfth man, but we need to produce the type of performances that makes supporters want to get off their seat, want to shout at a decision and want to support the lads when it is not going great. Supporters of football clubs that do not have the right or the resources to win every week are harder to get and harder to keep, but worth their weight in gold. We need the people of Stevenage to come out and support us. We have got three home games left. We need you all at Rochdale, we need you all at Tranmere and we need you all at Salford. We need every one of you.

H
appy Easter! I have been at the Club for two weeks now (excluding two weeks working remotely due to Covid) and I must say they have flown by. I have been pleasantly surprised at the overall set up of the Club and really impressed with how all of the staff have welcomed me in and been open and supportive of my approach. I am looking forward to growing strong relationships with everyone and working together to do our very best for the Club, community and you - our fans. Whilst the team is still in a challenging position on the field, recent performances and a superb, deserved, long awaited away win on Saturday against Colchester puts us in a positive place going into the Easter fixtures. Steve has really got the team working for each other and showing that teamwork makes the dream work! I for one, have the confidence that Steve and the boys will be doing their utmost to get the right result in both games over this weekend and beyond. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the supporters for their fabulous support at our last home game. Circa 4,600 fans, the season’s biggest crowd really boosted the lads. Whilst we could not quite get the result that the performance and your support deserved, it really did lift the team and everyone at the Club really appreciated the support. On behalf of the entire Club - THANK YOU! Once again, I am calling for us all to come together and roar the team on for this game and our final two at home. Get involved, rally your family and friends to come to The Lamex Stadium and show your support. Off the field we have had some great wins with new partnerships with Nando’s and M&S (great work Holly). Both new neighbours across the way in the retail

park and we look forward to activating and growing the relationship over next season. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Match sponsors Extrastaff and Match Ball sponsors Own Homes for their support of the Club today. Pleased to say that the barriers and gates have been installed to either end of the new North Stand since the last game and we hope to be able to increase the capacity to 1,000 in that area for the final two home games. The Foundation has had a busy two weeks with Easter Soccer Camps and the EFL’s Week of Action, showing the scope and diverse nature of the fantastic work they are carrying out across our county. Great news from the Academy with Alex Aitken being nominated for LFE’s League Two Apprentice of the Year at the upcoming EFL Awards being held at The Grosvenor House in Park Lane. Once again proving the great work that our Academy staff are carrying out every day behind the scenes. Back to today’s action against Rochdale, enjoy the game, get behind the team and roar the boys to victory. #COYB #TogetherForStevenage #TogetherForBoro

MATCHDAY MASCOTS A warm welcome this afternoon to Stanley KendrickGibson who is our mascot for this vital clash with Rochdale. Stanley, who lives in Welwyn, and attends Welwyn St Marys School has just celebrated his ninth birthday. He has a whole host of hobbies and among them are playing football with his two brothers, playing for Welwyn Pegasus and also the Cambridge United elite squad along with watching WWE wrestling and playing on his PlayStation. His favourite Boro player is Elliot List and we hope he gets to see his hero score a hat-trick today!
Also acting as a mascot today 31-yearold Rhys Wolstenholme from Heywood, Rochdale. It’s a special occasion for Rhys who is on his Stag weekend. Starting here at the Lamex, then travelling on to Nottingham. Rhys plays in goal at the weekends for Woolworths Sports FC in Division 2 of the Rochdale Sunday League. It’s natural then that his favourite Dale player is goalkeeper Jay Lynch, so much so in fact, that whilst on holiday in Tenerife, he tried to pass himself off as the Dale ‘keeper. You’re fooling no one Rhys! Rhys ties the knot with his partner of nine years, Kathryn, in July. His mates, who he has travelled down with today, wish them a long and happy life together and would like to thank George Delves at Rochdale Football Club for his help in arranging today’s surprise.

oming into the sixth round of matches in the 2011/12 npower League One season Stevenage had enjoyed a decent start, especially when you consider it was their debut season in the third tier of English football. With 3,021 fans at the Lamex, the home players immediately set the pace as Craig Reid opened the scoring for Stevenage within just 13 minutes; making it two goals from two games for him. However, the contest truly sparked into life around the half an hour mark as Rochdale’s Gary Jones responded in spectacular fashion as he struck one home from around 20 yards out. Boro

hit back as Chris Beardsley poked home a ball that was swung in by midfielder Lawrie Wilson. Beardsley secured his brace in the very closing stages of the first half when he bent his shot goal-wards from far out, making it 3-1 to Stevenage. The two sides battled on until the 70th minute when ‘Dale defender Neal Trotman had a misunderstanding with his goalkeeper, Jacob Kean, causing an own goal, making it 4-1 to Boro. Dale replied as debutant David Ball got a goal back for the visitors but Boro held out for an impressive 4-2 win. ALFIE NICHOLSON CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 15 APRIL Two things can be said about mid-April. One – we keep telling one another how fast the year has gone already. And two – the football season has gone full speed into a frantic fog of games-inhand being fulfilled and last-ditch tilts at titles. Or belated grabs at survival. Matters are there to be settled at this time of year, that’s for sure. So, it’s almost strange to see that – actually – 15 April is a relatively quiet one for us. It’s 20 years since Boro’ turned out on this day in history. And that was only the fifth time since we burst onto the senior soccer scene in 1980. Of course, the events of 15 April 2002 are better best forgotten. Two days after Wayne Turner’s men secured a first-ever appearance in the FA Trophy Final after seeing off Morecambe, there was far less prestige in our first-ever loss against Leigh RMI. And it continued a small, yet concerning, pattern whereby Boro’ have
16
failed to score on this date since being promoted to the GM Vauxhall Conference in 1994. Our 1995 goalless draw at home to Merthyr Tydfil brought a clean sweep of wins on 15 April to an end; a run that’s only three games big, but it’s a habit you want to keep. Wolverton Town (1989) and Ware (1991) fell by the wayside after our 2-1 win at Long Buckby now 40 years ago. That’s the only time we’ve been on the road on this date too. Anyway, back our last two on this date. Surely 20 years is enough water under the bridge for us to move away from that inability to score. We could rather do with the goals right about now… 1982* Long Buckby 1-2 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Premier Division (Herring, Huxtable) 1989 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Wolverton Town, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Bambrick, Williams, S Taverner) 1991 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Ware, Vauxhall Football League Division Two North (Marshall 2) 1995 Stevenage Borough 0-0 Merthyr Tydfil, GM Vauxhall Conference 2002 Stevenage Borough 0-1 Leigh RMI, Nationwide Conference * BoroGuide is missing some names from this team sheet. YOU AGAIN? ROCHDALE Ask us to name a famous “dale” and, as lower league football fans, “Roch” won’t be far from the lips. Neither will “Emmer” or “Winton” either, but we’re not playing them today. And what we’d dearly love, of course, are visitors against whom we know (if only by distant memory) how to bag a nice three-point haul against. Indeed, we are a far, far cry from those halcyon times 10 years ago when we recorded a high-scoring double at the expense of the Dale. On 3 September 2011, we recorded our first-ever home League One win by putting four goals past our guests from Spotland; Beardo’s brace adding to strikes from Craig Reid and an own goal. Could we double our money when we travelled to their place for the first time in January 2012? Well, we had to do without boss Graham Westley; recently departed at that time (to Preston, not… y’know). Robbo took control as we looked for a new gaffer and inspired one of the great Boro’ performances of recent times – crushing our hosts 5-1.
www.stevenagefc.com
Rochdale were relegated at the end of the 2011-2 season, returning to League One in 2014. It was that year, though, that we made our way back to League Two. So, it wouldn’t be until November 2021 when we’d meet again. Again, it was a managerless Boro’ side – though our fortunes were much less favourable. Still, a 2-2 draw not to be sniffed at. A little touch of Robbo’s rampagers would be very much appreciated today. Of course, there was an FA Cup encounter at the Lamex back in December 2004. Any hopes of another famous Boro’ upset were dashed by a smart Rochdale performance. It was the first time we met and the first time they won – but that’s something they’re yet to repeat and let’s hope it stays that way. Or do we upgrade that ‘hope’ to ‘pray’?

ACADEMY
W
hat a win last Saturday! Congratulations to the 1st team staff and players on an excellent 3 away points and let’s hope we can take that momentum into today’s game. Our U18s are nearing the end of their season too and over the past few weeks have come up against new opposition via the Merit League 1 games programme and also arranged friendly fixtures. Although we have gone into the U18 games programme young – with the team predominantly made up of U15/16/17 players – we have coped really well with the physical challenges set to us. Short term the results have been mixed, an away 3-3 draw with Exeter and a 0-1 home defeat v Plymouth together with a 2-1 away win at Brighton in an U17 fixture, long term the benefits will be huge for the players and ultimately the club. The work going on behind the scenes by staff, both full and part time, really is starting to see results now with player development rapidly improving. Our playing philosophy of dominating the football and taking risks with the ball to get out of tight areas sometimes leads to mistakes and these mistakes may even lead to goals conceded but every mistake
is an opportunity for the player to learn and develop so in a way once again the short term result will have no bearing on the long term outcome. This philosophy has been embraced by players and staff and as long as they continue to persevere and believe in themselves and what they are trying to achieve – and more importantly understand what the end goals are – then we have put ourselves in a really strong position to develop more players quickly. Enjoy the game today and let’s hope for another 3 points in our final push ROBBIE O’KEEFE Academy Manager

Frenchie, it’s been a good recent run of results with more points on the board. How would you assess your performance lately? Yeah, I think it’s been really good. I’ve been playing in some different positions recently. I’ve played at left back helping out with injuries but really been enjoying it. I think the team as well have just been developing in confidence going forward and we keep on getting better. You’ve been playing in a more advanced role lately, how would you say your game has changed? Over the season I’ve been all over the pitch. I started at centre back, right back then on the wing; so I think growing in confidence since Fadi and Dave have come in to give me that confidence to drive up the pitch, take shots on and get crosses in – it’s been good.
You got your first goal of the season in the County Cup Final – talk us through it? I think we won it on the halfway line; Dionne did an amazing dribble and pass to me on the right – I took a touch and just hoped for the best shot and it went in! How pleasing was it to win the cup and how did it feel? Oh it was so good! It was such a good game to play in. I mean I feel like as a team we were completely in control and it was nice to just relax and be creative and have those opportunities to do that. Obviously winning any game is good but winning a cup and getting a trophy was lovely. What do you hope to achieve in our remaining games of the season? Obviously win and get the points but also to have fun – I think we will get those points.

With five games now left they find themselves on 47 points, 10 points clear of the drop zone. But that cushion has

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS WELCOME The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers was the forerunner for what we now know as the Co-op - a trusted and much-loved institution which is owned by its members. Rochdale AFC too is a ‘much-loved’ institution which, since 1907, has been a fan-owned club. It has never had a majority owner. The club is now under threat from a hostile take-over which threatens to seriously compromise its traditional values. To this end, the Dale Trust and the Rochdale board of directors are hoping to raise £130,000 to fund their legal battle. An appeal has been sent to football supporters everywhere. Should you wish to help, then details can be found here.
ARCHIVES QUIZ Who, when, what and where is the question this week.
Courtesy of Stevenage Pictorial newspaper Answers published in next article on April 23rd.
SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION The Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association, in its current guise, has been operating since 1994. That’s some 28 years. In all that time, there has been but two chairmen, Keith Berners and (since 2004) myself. During the past two seasons, we have lost the services of Mervyn Stoke-Geddes,
www.stevenagefc.com
Jenny Dowden, Jacky Berners and John Carroll from the committee, each of whom had 20+ years’ service. Last week, we were saddened to learn that Fiona Brooks (10+ yrs service) had also tendered her resignation from the committee. This leaves our committee sorely depleted of both numbers and vital experience, which is troubling. The Supporters’ Association is anxious to recruit new members to the committee, particularly younger candidates and those with expertise in their own field. If you love our club, and want to engage in a closer relationship with all the supporters whom we represent, then I would be delighted to hear from you. Please do contact me as soon as you are able here: Lloyd@sfcsa.co.uk
INTER-CITY BORO So, we’re down to our last two away games of the season - and absolutely vital they are too. It’s also vitally important that as many Boro fans go to these games, as your support on the day is the equivalent of having a 12th man out there. So, on Monday (18th) we go to Scunthorpe. We simply have to beat The Iron in this game. Buses leave The Lamex at 9:30 at a cost of just £25 for SA members. Then, on Saturday April 30th, our last foray of the 2021-22 season is the long haul up to Carlisle. We depart Stevenage at 8:30am and the cost for members is £35. Who of you will join Boro the Bear on these essential excursions? Booking details for both trips can be found here. LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
