“Progression in the Carabao Cup has rewarded us with a home fixture

elcome to The Lamex Stadium for our Sky Bet League Two league match against Rochdale this evening. Across the football club this season, excitement has been building on and off the pitch. Our unbeaten start to the season under the management of Steve, Paul and Alex has seen us enjoy last minute winners against Stockport and Reading and last weekend we had incredible scenes from our travelling support as Danny Rose rescued us a point in the tenth minute of injury time! Progression in the Carabao Cup has rewarded us with a home fixture against Peterborough United in Round Two on Tuesday 23rd August at 7.45pm and I would encourage everyone to join us and be a part of the occasion as we try to make Round Three. If you have not already done so this season, a reminder that you can visit our 76 Lounge, Broadhall Suite and Club Shop before the match. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Club already this season and we hope you enjoy the game!

Boro’ welcomed Rochdale to The Lamex on December the 4th 2004 for an FA Cup second round tie. After sneaking past Billericay in the first round 1-0, Stevenage found themselves drawn against the League Two outfit who had beaten Oxford in the first round. After two draws in their last two matches, Stevenage were keen to produce a cup upset against Rochdale, and that hope started to become belief at half time as Boro’ managed to keep Rochdale at bay with the score at 0-0. But the deadlock was broken as Rochdale striker Grant Holt scored in the 70th minute, dealing a heavy blow to Stevenage’s chances of progressing further in the famous Ifcompetition.therewere some home fans inside the Lamex with a bit of optimism left, those feelings were finally extinguished as Stevenage ‘keeper Andy Woodman was dismissed with two minutes of ordinary time left before Grant Holt doubled his and the Dales’ tally for the afternoon as he scored in the 90th minute, securing Rochdale a place in the third round of the FA Cup at Stevenage’s expense. First, when we’re at home on 16 August, we tend to win. The only exception is our most recent game on this date; our lukewarm 1-1 draw with Weymouth as GW’s second stint as Boro’ boss got off to a very slow start in 2008. The second thing is the tale of two 3-1 wins on this date. It starts in 1980 with a maiden senior league win at the expense of ON Chenecks. Boro’ turned senior in summer 1979 – but were left without a senior league competition to play in. Fast forward a year and our acceptance into the United Counties League showed that we weren’t hanging around. It was the start of a path that led to this date in 2011; Boro’ recording a 3-1 win at AFC Bournemouth in League One. In 1999, we didn’t have swagger to victory over Doncaster Rovers; Richard Hill’s team playing with such panache. Where did it all go wrong? Moving on six years, things got a bit heated down at Kingfield. A George Boyd brace had put us 2-1 ahead, but the hosts rallied to turn the game on its head as Dino Maamria lost his; sent off after an altercation with the Cards’ Ian Selley.

ON THIS DAY: 16 AUGUST Now, this is more like it. It’s now 10 days on from our first home game of a brandnew campaign – but didn’t it feel like it came around a bit earlier than usual? MidAugust is that ‘fresh season’ time of year as far as we’re concerned and you don’t have to be too eagle-eyed to spot two things straight away.

It’s not all that long since Max Clark swapped Spotland for Stevenage and will no doubt have some friendly words with our opponents today. He’s obviously not the only man to wear both shirts, however. But that’s not to say we have a big pool to choose from when it comes to this Onesegment.name that does stand out is Peter Vincenti. We don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that Vincenti really made a name for himself while at Boro’. He came to us from Millwall in 2008 and had a knack for scoring some big goals – not least our firstever in the Football League. No matter if you describe him as an attacker or a midfielder (or both), Vincenti developed a cult status in his three years at the Lamex. But it had to come to an end in January 2011 as he moved to fellow League Two side Aldershot Town. While with the Shots, the club were relegated at the end of the 2012-3 season – and ended up back in nonleague. For Vincenti, however, his career would keep him in the Football League. And it was Rochdale who snapped him up on the expiration of his Shots deal. The Jersey lad would then go on to enjoy a longer spell that offered more game time when compared with his Boro’ stay; 152 appearances over four years that yielded a total of 32 goals.

only four months since we were deliberating over our fortunes against the side from Spotland. They came to ours on Good Friday; Scott Cuthbert scoring the goal that secured a 1-0 win and our extending our unbeaten record against them to four games. In fact, the only time we’ve been on the wrong end of the result was when we met for the only time not as equals. That was in December 2004 when we lost 2-0 at home in our FA Cup Round Two meeting.

npower League One Everyone remembers the away day we had at Spotland during the 2011-2 campaign; Mark Roberts taking charge on a temporary basis after GW had left and delivering an astonishing 5-1 win. But we had no shortage of goals at our place earlier that season. The Dale came to us in early September with Boro’ looking for a first home League One victory. Craig Reid scored for the second time in as many games to open the scoring on 13 minutes. But our guests were back on terms 15 minutes later courtesy of an excellent Gary Jones effort. That lifted Boro’ to the next level and Chris Beardsley restored our advantage two minutes later as he tapped home Lawrie Wilson’s cross from close range. It got even better for Boro’ before the break too. Beardo was the main man again; cutely curling home from 20 yards in first half stoppage time to double the Weadvantage.wereall but out of sight with 20 minutes left on the clock. To sum up Rochdale’s day, Neal Trotman and goalkeeper Jake Kean found themselves

22 FCSTEVENAGE V A.F.C.ROCHDALE STEVENAGE FC ACADEMY

Good afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for today’s fixture with Rochdale. Let the unbeaten run continue. Lots has changed since I was last asked to write notes for the programme, firstly on a personal note I have a new job role at the football club, and I am loving it. Moving from overseeing our pathway as Pathway Manager to overseeing our Under 7s – Under 12s as the Foundation Phase Lead coach at the academy. The new job has had its highs and lows since starting as with any job I guess. However the highs have definitely outweighed the lows. One personal highlight for me has been the amount of new experiences that has been created for our young players who with the support of their fantastic parents have travelled the length and breadth of the country testing themselves against some of the biggest clubs in England. I would firstly like to take this opportunity to thank all the players and parents across the academy not just in my phase for the past season, everyone at the academy is fully aware of the journeys and timescales involved in traveling to and from training and fixtures. Secondly, I would like to thank all the staff for all their hard work in making the experience at the academy the best for all our young players. Ultimately the environment we have at the academy not only develops players but helps development our staff as well and across the season I have had to say bye to a few colleagues but most importantly now individuals I consider lifelong friends in Steve Barker, Jesse Parsons & lastly Jimmy Martin who has been superb in developing myself as a coach and as a person during his time at the Football Club. All have gone onto the next step in their career, and I wish them the best of luck and thank them for their efforts. Now onto a summer like no other with the early return of football this has meant the last few months have been busier than ever with little time in between to put your feet up and rest. The planning for this coming season started pretty much straight away to ensure that our academy meets the staffs aim of being the best Cat 3 academy in the country. And we are exactly a week away from inviting our Under 9-14s back through the doors at Shephalbury starting the most exciting season at the academy yet. I hope you enjoy the game, make some noise, and COME ON BORO!

staff has been strengthened considerably with the club signing Amy Gooderham from tier 3 MK Dons, Nicole Farmer, Celine Ray, Kelsey Millen, Daisy Jenkins, Ciara Craig and Erin Price. There was also a return to the ‘Boro for striker, Becky Shephard who resigns for the club for her second spell. Despite dropping down a tier, we have managed to retain important core players from last season. We recently held our annual “Media Night” at the Lamex Stadium with the girls and staff getting their team photo and headshots for the season done in the new home and away kits.

t’s been a busy summer that past few months here at the Foundation, after what has been a tough period for us heading towards our new year which starts in earnest next month. The team have been working to be more present at local community events such as, Stevenage Day, TOTFest, Codicote Village Day and out in and about in the town centre towards the end of last season, all of which has seen a boost in engagement, more selfies with Boro Bear and new fans created.

Out in the community our summer NCS programme has seen the first wave of 78 young people, complete their NCS journey and delivered some great social action into the community, raising awareness of key local charities. They are followed by our second wave of 29 departing yesterday for Kingswood in Finally,Norfolk.after much preparation, we’ve been delivered our Summer Soccer Camps and our Holiday Activities & Food (HaF) Camps, the latter of which was born from the Marcus Rashford initiative last year, and has seen 1965 free spaces delivered into the communities that need them most, offering a days’ worth of fun & sport, plus a hot meal provided by the amazing team at El Bar De Tapas in the Old Town.

For all the latest news from the Foundation visit

In total our summer programme has already engaged with 1329 children, as we just move past the halfway point. It has been fantastic to see results on the pitch improve, which has had a knock on effect throughout the Foundation team and with those we engage with. Whether young or old, talking to participants about the late equalisers or winners, new signings and hopes for the season has lifted the mood across our community.

Behind the scenes we’ve been preparing for the new academic year our education team working tirelessly to increase the number of local schools we work with, now at 48 schools, which is a big increase pre-covid times.

After being locked into a bottom tier existence for more than 40 years Rochdale have been a bit more see-saw in the past few Havingcampaigns.reached the third tier in 2010 Rochdale lasted just two years - but although they were quickly relegated, they bounced back after two years in League Two and won promotion again in 2014. After successive finishes of 8th, 10th and 9th, Dale struggled for survival and in the end carved out seven seasons at League one level before they were relegated in 2021. Last season was one of adjustment to the new league and although they were never seriously in danger, an 18th place finish was not what was expected. This campaign has also proved to be a tough one with Rochdale, stranded at the bottom of the league, the only side with no return from their three games so far. Home defeats against Crewe and Grimsby have been sandwiched between an away reverse at Gillingham. But although our opponents tonight have only one league goal so far, they did grab two last week in a 2-0 Carabao Cup success at home to Burton. The win will see them travel to Sheffield Wednesday in the second round.

From Stockport, James earned a move into the EFL with Boro, which was followed by him joining Ebbsfleet in 2019. After playing in all 14 of Fleet’s matches in the opening two months of the 2019/20 campaign, he was snapped up by fellow National League side Solihull Moors for an undisclosed fee. Did you know that Season Ticket holders can see our Women’s team at home for free? Sadly, fifty years ago, things were a lot different. There was no organised structure for the development of women’s football. However, there was a team back in 1972 called the “Chells Belles”. Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association has this agreement in place, underpinned by the SA’s “Golden Share”. Incidentally, do you know why Stevenage play in red and white? Well, back in 1884, the original colours were black and amber. From 1895, the club dabbled with light/ dark blue halves (see accompanying photo) until William Wadsworth, a draper from Datchworth, procured a set of red & white striped shirts in 1902 - and we’ve stuck with the colours ever since.
