QUIZ! Welcome to our latest interactive quiz of the season. Today it’s our first quiz of the campaign and a chance to test your knowledge from last season and the summer.

It’s the start of a new season and we are delighted to offer a warm Boro welcome to our two mascots for today’s clash with Stockport. After two successive title wins, hopes were high, and following a 5-1 Herts Charity Cup romp over Bishop’s Stortford to start the campaign, Boro stormed to more glory on the opening day. And yes this was the Mark Smith show, the famous game where Smudger grabbed no less than all four goals in the 4-1 win. 17 WWW.STEVENAGEFC.COM FAN FOCUS INTERVIEW

A bit old fashioned I know – but the plain Red & White stripes for me. If you would like to do a Fan Focus, or if you know a Boro fan that has a birthday (whatever the age!) or special occasion coming up that we can feature, or any other general supporter query, send us an email and we’ll try our best to help. COYB!

Norris who stepped up to the plate at the end of last season – but I think my favourite at this time has to be Jake Reeves. A very creative busy player with an excellent range of passing – good to see him score last Saturday.

WHY DO I LOVE BORO

FIRST BORO GAME That’s a tough one, would have been in the late 60’s early 70’s in the Stevenage Athletic days, playing in the Southern league I believe. There was a tree where the North stand now sits, used to climb that to watch the first half, then get in for free at half time!!

n behalf of Carl (SLO) and Alex (DSLO) welcome to our new supporters’ page. For each home digital interactive programme, we hope to provide useful information updates and fun features.

It’s my hometown club, I have a lot a good memories attached to the club. Playing for them for a short while, as well as playing against them many times. It is still always good to bump into some old mates on a Saturday and Tuesday night and reminisce about our playing days many years ago!!

FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER Difficult to answer owing to the amount of newcomers to the squad. I do like Luke

FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER Mark Roberts for his passion and leadership during our early League 2 & 1 days. And of course I can’t forget my old mate Martin Gittings who I played with and against many times. I am fairly confident his goal scoring record will never be broken – without doubt a legend of the club.

FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT

There have been many, especially since being promoted into the football league. Always liked beating Luton, but the best has to be beating Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 on a Tuesday night in 2011. I remember thinking that we needed another one to be sure of winning – we were 5-0 up at the time!

Alex Potter (dslo@stevenagefc.com)

Carl Rutherford and(slo@stevenagefc.com)

In this first edition, we have a ‘Fan Focus’ interview. Gary ‘Redders’ Redmond is an East Terrace season ticket holder, and has supported Boro for many years, as well as playing for us in the late 1980’s alongside Boro legend Martin Gittings. Redders is a great guy, who is always good to chat to on matchdays, and he loves The Boro!

ON THIS DAY: 06 AUGUST

It’s perhaps no surprise that Boro’ have played a mere handful of times on this date in history. Since 1980, sure – there were times where competitions such as the Woolwich Trophy or various county cup competitions had us starting in the latter stages of July. But the competitive stuff? It’s fairly unusual for Gameweek 2 to fall on the first weekend of August. Even as far back as 2011, though, we trotted out on 6 August to kick off our league campaign. Then, it was Boro’s first-ever appearance as a tier three club; Exeter City coming to town in our League One opener – and leaving it again with a point; a goalless draw described by the Beeb as “uninspiring”. Two years later, the relegation troubles that were to unfold later in the 2013-4 season were nowhere on the horizon as Boro’ upset the odds to dump Championship side Ipswich Town out of the Capital One Cup. Filipe Morais and a lesser-spotted Jordan Burrow goal put paid to the Tractor Boys’ efforts as we set up a Round Two date with Everton. For both those fixtures, Gavin Ward was our referee. Strange that. No Mr Ward this time, though. A draw, a win, and now to complete the set. Crewe Alexandra came to the Lamex on 6 August 2016. Darren Sarll was in charge and looking to draw on the momentum he’d started to build after taking over from Teddy Sheringham the previous season. Alas, it wasn’t to be; Charlie Lee’s goal not enough as we lost 2-1.

“A cruel result” is how Stockport boss Ray Mathias described our 2-2 draw at Edgeley Park later that season. The hosts were in sight of a much-needed win – but Lawrie Wilson popped up in the 90th minute to earn us a point towards our playoff bid. The Hatters would ultimately suffer a second straight relegation and end up in the

18 FCSTEVENAGE V FCCOUNTYSTOCKPORT BORO HISTORY

The Hatters (no, not those ones) are still relatively unfamiliar opponents to us. We first played them in November 2003 by virtue of the FA Cup Round One draw; non-league Boro’ paired with Stockport County of Division Two (League One). It’d then be eight years before we’d have the pleasure of their company again. In what we call a milestone moment for us, it’d be against the Hatters on 21 August 2010 at the Lamex that we’d achieve a first-ever win in the Football League. A Michael Bostwick strike sandwiched in between two Charlie Griffin goals did the honours in that 3-1 victory.

IT’S STOCKPORT COUNTY AGAIN…

19 WWW.STEVENAGEFC.COM MAGIC MOMENT: 08 November 2003 FA Cup Round One

ON BOTH SIDES… One name on the Boro’ team sheet ought to be familiar with today’s guests – and that’s Carl Piergianni. The defender spent one season (201112) at Edgeley Park as the Hatters tried to bounce straight back up to the Football League. But that’s not our main man in focus

Is this one of the last – or, at least, most recent – authentic Boro’ cupsets? Of course, we’ve made our name known in the years since (e.g., beating Ipswich Town on this day in 2013). But we’re talking bone fide non-league magic; doing a number on a Football League side in an era when two-up two-down had only just become a thing. At the time, the Hatters were not that long since members of the old Division One – now known as the Championship. Relegation in 2002 put them in Division Two (or League One) and there were still two divisions between us when they came to us in November 2003. We were having a traditionally Westleyan inconsistent first half of the season –but the cup is a great leveller, isn’t it? Two first-half goals from Dino Maamria did the damage. The first came on 29 minutes; Michael Warner’s cross found its way to the Tunisian striker via a deflection – and Dino was all too happy to do the honours. It was 2-0 less than 10 minutes later. This time, Jamie Gould delivered the ball in for Dino to head home. The Hatters hit back as you might expect. Richard Lambert struck the woodwork with a header of his own, before the visitors literally had a goal handed to them. Simon Wormull handled the ball in the area, referee Mr Armstrong saw it, and Jim Goodwin converted the spot kick. Boro’ would, however, ultimately hold on to record one of the shocks of the round. Next stop for us was Swansea City. And, the following season, Stockport County were relegated to League ByTwo.Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.uk

Stockport was a brief stop in the early stages of Carl Alford’s career –although we don’t know much about the details of his time there. What we do know is that Anthony Elding had a great ol’ time of it at Edgeley Park. Eldinho netted 26 goals in 52 games across all competitions for them. The Hatters signed him from fellow League Two side Boston United in early 2007; the striker stepping up from Kettering Town of the Conference North before that. It was a roundabout way of getting to the Football League; GW

The last few months has been busier than ever and there have been some exciting changes made within the Academy. Since the departure of our previous Academy Manager, I have been tasked with continuing the excellent work that our Academy has undertaken, working with our staff here to deliver the best possible experience for our young people. We have been busy over the summer ensuring everything is going in a positive direction and we believe with the changes that are happening, we are onto something Iexciting!amdelighted to be able to inform you that Paul Dale will take on the Youth Development Phase Lead role. Paul has a wealth of experience, in and out of the game and is someone who we believe will stretch, challenge, and support our players AND staff with his knowledge of leadership, communication and coaching across the football pyramid. Paul is an FA affiliated tutor and his last coaching role saw him work in the Youth Development Phase at Southampton FC. Matt Barnaby who was already within our Academy as a part-time physiotherapist will now take on the role as Head of Medical. Matt has experience in EFL first team football and academy football and for us, this is a real coup. We have also invested in a full-time Head of Athletic Development and Nutrition; Phil Samuel has taken on this role to improve the entire Academy’s provision of athletic development, continuing to work closely with the U18’s and now with the schoolboys, ably assisted by Maddie Trobridge. Our excellent player care officer Robyn Reardon will also go fulltime from the 1st of September to support the needs of all our Academy players further. last campaign and a pre season of three away wins and a 2-2 draw with Bolton, County were left with too much to do when they fell behind 3-0 at home to Barrow within 33 minutes on Saturday. Despite a fightback with goals from Sarcevic and Madden, the task was to prove just too much, and the optimism of preseason disappeared. This of course makes County even more dangerous in their second start in the EFL, especially after they proved so dominant in the National League. A run of 13 wins and one draw from January to March this year really put them in the driving seat from nearest rivals Wrexham, and despite four defeats from six in the run in, Stockport held their nerve in the crucial last two games, beating Torquay 1-0 before a goal either side of the break against Halifax clinched promotion on the final day - and sent Wrexham into the lottery of the playoffs from which they failed to emerge.

A couple of weeks ago, I, along with many others, celebrated the life of Delvin Stevens. Delvin’s passing came as a great shock to everyone. A true and loyal servant to the club, Delvin played for Stevenage Town, Athletic and Borough. He even ‘managed’ Boro for a short while back in the early 1980’s. At some stage in the near future, I hope to draft a portrait of all the Stevenage football ‘greats’ for the programme by instalment - they need to be remembered.

Attending Delvin’s funeral, I was pleased to meet up with both Ray Peacock and Richard England. It was a joy to see two players from George Curtis’s “Town” team of the ‘60’s meet up again for the first time in 54 Theyears.accompanying photograph is that of Richard (Dickie) England and his lovely wife, Brenda - along with yours truly. If anyone has memories or anecdotal ‘stuff’ of this period in Stevenage football, then I’d really love to hear from them.

A big, warm-hearted Boro welcome to Stockport County, absent from the Football League for eleven seasons. Too long. Welcome to the management team, directors, playing staff and especially to their supporters visiting the Lamex this Oneafternoon.ofStockport’s supporters groups is “County Co-op”, and so I offer a personal welcome to Peter Towey (chair), Caroline “Cazbo” Burt (secretary), Emma Mannion (Fund Raising), Andy Burt (treasurer) and other members of their board. I hope you have a great time here in Stevenage, and a (long, but) safe journey back to Stockport SA BUS Great turnout at Tranmere last Saturday - and what a win! However, the bus cost us almost £1200 and despite getting 33 fans to come with us, the bus still ‘made a loss’. This is something that we simply cannot afford. Unless the bus achieves ‘break-even’ status at least, then the SA reserves the right to withdraw its commitment. My grateful thanks to Andy Mugridge and John Carrol for mustering our fans to this important away game. Where would we be without them? Our next big away-day is next Saturday August 13th - to Walsall. Members only pay £25 each and the bus departs the Lamex at 10:30am. Who of you will come with us to The Bescot? Can we make it ‘back-toback’ victories on the road, in what’s going to be an amazing season? Get thee there with Boro the Bear. Come one, come all to Walsall.
