ood afternoon and welcome to The Lamex Stadium for today’s game against Sutton United. It was great to get off the mark with the three points last Saturday. Our performances and attitude in recent weeks have deserved more points on the board, but a victory can never be underestimated. Results are what it is all about. The players’ confidence and belief continues to grow, and that is evident both during matches and at the training ground. This is a positive but we know there is still plenty of work to do, and we want to build on the weekend to gain some momentum now. This Saturday is a chance to do that, and the players know they must work decisively with clear intent to achieve this.
“NOTHING IS MORE POSITIVE THAN THREE POINTS” On a separate note, we welcomed Jimmy Ball to the Club last week. Jimmy is someone who has always been involved in football, and brings more experience in League Two after taking Forest Green to the play-offs last season as interim manager. It is no surprise to me to see the effect Jimmy is having on the players already, despite only knowing them for a short period of time. Another full week at the training ground has given us more time with the players, to challenge them and drive an impact that will benefit the team come three o’clock on Saturday. We have a group of players who are demanding more of each other every day, not just on the pitch but the overall approach this football club has to winning football matches too. We are creating an environment that is clear and

aligned to our goals for this season. Last Saturday, it was obvious to see how we are progressing as a team, but that result just highlights the work we have been putting in over the last six weeks or so. We have to make sure everything we do has a positive effect, and the supporters know that nothing is more positive than three points. We will keep doing what we are doing.

ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Sutton United. Our win last Saturday was well deserved and the difference in the style of play and appetite from the side, compared to a month ago, was absolutely noticeable. The performance was determined, sharp, bright, full of flair and attacking intent. The score line at 3-1 flattered Walsall in my opinion – not in possession, but in chances created. I really enjoyed watching the game and I am looking forwards to continuing our run to start climbing the table. Having new players to create competition for shirts and new coaching voices in Paul, Mel and Jimmy makes all the difference and I repeat again our target; to finish in the top 10 of the ‘second half of the season league table’. To do that, we have got to first start climbing the form table and we are more than capable of doing that. It feels like an exciting time to me, and I am sure the players feel the same way. We have not slowed down on player recruitment, but we are being selective now that we have secured our main targets. With each game Paul has more time to see how he wants to shape his team and we are very clear on the players he wants to bring in. As you can imagine, January is not the best time to do your business, but we have a clearly defined path and we have the funds to add quality to the squad, within normal commercial constraints. Off the pitch, we announced that Alex Tunbridge our CEO will be leaving us in April to take up a similar position at a League One club. Frankly, I was disappointed to receive that news from him whilst in the US as Alex has been pivotal in diligently carrying out the way I wanted the Club to be run, so he will be missed by all of us when he leaves.

However, I have always believed that change can bring new opportunities and a new way of looking at things, so we will take this opportunity to bring a new CEO into the Club and perhaps a new approach into all aspects of our business, from commercial to the way we engage with our fans. We have invited applications for the role and have already received a dozen or so applications from good quality applicants. More on this as we progress. Boro had already won four from four of their Diadora League Premier Division games ahead of this and it was to be the fifth as they edged past Sutton.

But with Cloughie’s eventual Conference winning squad taking shape Boro proved too much, Martin Gittings grabbed a brace while Dave Venables also chipped in for the victory. HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 15 JANUARY In our first few outings, it seemed like Boro’ had the measure of this particular date; four matches played, four wins on the board. But a new century brought new fortunes for us – and we’d much prefer things to go back to how they were. In fairness, each of the three games we’ve played on 15 January from 2000 onwards have been away from home. Two of them have come at the same stage of the FA Trophy. Yeovil Town (2000), Woking (2005), and Chesterfield (2011) all ran out winners at our expense. Perhaps more worrying is the fact that we’ve drawn a blank in the last two. It didn’t always used to be like this. You do, however, have to go back as far as 1994 for our last win on this date. A 2-0 away win at Dulwich Hamlet saw Martin Gittings grab his obligatory goals – and accounted for three of the points that landed us the Diadora League Premier Division title later that season. Four years before that, another brace put us on course for victory on this date in 1990. Unusually, however, that was a brace of own goals! Together with Rob McComb’s strike, we beat Harlow Town at home in the Knights Floodlit League. Where the FA Trophy has delivered two defeats on this date, the Eastern (Knights) Floodlit League is quite the

reverse. Harlow was the second, but Stansted was the first; Boro’ thanking Ricky Marshall for a 1-0 away win in 1986. Boro’ would certainly love a league win tonight. That goes without saying, to be fair – so apologies for doing so! But it brings us to the point. Three points would mean breaking the habit of a millennium and ending a run of three straight defeats on 15 January. YOU AGAIN? SUTTON UNITED Boro’s first encounter with Sutton United came almost 40 years ago. But the fact that we’ve only played each other 10 times over the years shows just how patchy our time together has been. Indeed, our two visits to The Borough Sports Ground earlier this season came 21 years after we last appeared on the same pitch as them. And it perhaps showed a shift in the balance of power – based on our recent results. A disappointing 2-1 league defeat in September was followed up by elimination from the Papa John’s Trophy on penalties just six weeks ago. But it also ended a run of three straight Boro’ wins in this particular fixture. Two of those came during the 1999-00 Nationwide Conference season (2-0 away and 1-0 at home), while the other came six years before that – a 3-2 home Diadora League Premier Division win on 06 September 1993. Somehow, the fixture computer (or pen and paper as it may have been back in the 1993-4 season) had already sent us to their place two weeks before hand; the two sides playing out a 0-0 draw on 21 August 1993. So, within a few weeks of the season starting, we’d already completed our home and away legs

against the Us. It was the preceding campaign (1992-3) that we first met the Us as equals. Again, we were sent to The Borough Sports Ground early on; Boro’ claiming a 0-0 draw on 01 September 1992. Later that season at Broadhall Way, we claimed our first-ever win against them. Mark Smith got the only goal of the match on 13 February 1993 as we registered a 1-0 win. To date, those two seasons are the only time we’ve been in the same division for more than one successive campaign. But what about our previous meetings? Well, we only have to step back one season from 1992 for one of them. Boro’ lost 2-1 on the road in a Diadora League Cup against a Us side who were higherleague opponents at the time. And it’s fair to say we were completely outclassed in our first-ever meeting back in 1984. The Us, who went onto dominate the Isthmian League that season, cruised to a 4-1 win on home territory in the Hitachi Cup. All in all, and with the defeat on penalties in the Papa John’s Trophy, it’s four wins apiece for us and Sutton United (two draws making up the numbers). But, with seven of our past encounters taking place at their place, it’s almost a novelty for us to be hosting them. Not only that, but whisper this quietly – three home games against the Us have all gone our way. We’ve already lost one three-match winning streak this season against them. Let’s not lose this one too, eh?

ood Afternoon, good luck to Paul and the staff for this afternoon’s game v Sutton United. The Stevenage FC EDP returned to education and play last Tuesday and was straight back into action with a game against Ipswich for the C side, resulting in a 5-2 loss. The A team began the year away to Norwich with an outstanding 7-0 victory. The team showed dominance throughout the game, playing our new shape of 3-4-2-1, allowing us to control possession throughout the game against a team 5 places above us. Excellent progress in such a small space of time. The EDP are now aligned with the Academy in terms of our syllabus and philosophy that furthers the support for players in their development at the club. This will further the development of the pathway throughout the EDP and into the Stevenage FC Academy, making the process smoother for players who could progress further. Looking objectively at the EDP, there seems to be real potential in developing the programme, one Stevenage FC can be proud of. We have an excellent tutor in Chris Winton, who provides both educational and pastoral support for the boys, and a young coach in Josh Coldicott-
Stevens, someone with bundles of energy and a strong role model for the players. With the relationship between the EDP and the Academy coming closer together, it makes this an interesting time to be part of the EDP project. Vicky, a belated happy new year, how was your Christmas break? It was good thank you! I spent Christmas with my family and went away to Hunstanton with a few friends. We had some sessions with the girls at the gym, which was really good and taught some stuff about functions of movement and looking after ourselves. I managed to see my sponsors Strive Performance a couple of times too. You signed for Stevenage FCW just before Christmas, how have you settled in so far? Yeah, I’ve settled in well I think. The first session that I came to I was really welcomed by the girls. I spoke to Fadi before I came. We’ve got a good structure and good set up here – consistency is key for me. For ‘Boro fans who might not be familiar with you, can you tell us a bit about yourself? I’m 31, I’ve played football since I was 13 and started off with the boys. I work for Cambridge United Community Trust so a little bit of a conflict of interest with my work and playing! How would you describe yourself as a footballer? I’m vocal, aggressive, make good tackles, and influence people positively around me What was it about Stevenage FCW that made you want to sign? I was struggling at the club I was at before with getting consistencies, so I came over here and having spoken

to Fadi, he just filled me with confidence. He didn’t beat around the bush, he was very open and honest with me, he got me straight away and it was shared values with the manager. What do you feel you can bring to this team? My experience comes from having played Championship level for a few years and I’ve set up a team from scratch; playing and managing for four or five years with everything in between! I know what a good team looks like and I know what a good set-up looks like – I know how to get there, which is what Stevenage want me to do. I like to grind out results on pitches that aren’t great to play on and against teams that are difficult to play against. What are your expectations for the rest of the season and what do you hope to achieve? My expectations are to stay in this league. I spoke to Fadi straightaway when I signed that I’m going to do everything I can to keep Stevenage FCW in this league. It’s the league we deserve to be in and we can grow from there. Personally, if I can put in some more good appearances and develop my game at centre back and hopefully influence some of the girls around me.

against Boro back on September 11. Since that success they have performed well, that triumph was the start of a run of seven wins from eight games and since then they have kept their place in the play-offs and on the fringes of the automatic places. Their first clash as a league side was a 3-2 League Cup defeat at Cardiff back in August and while they are still in the EFL Trophy, they were knocked out of the FA Cup after a 2-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers.

ONE TO WATCH Omar Bugiel is a Lebanese striker who first made his name with Forest Green with a spell from 2016-2018. After a move to Bromley he joined Sutton for the 2019-20 season and in three campaigns has made 86 leagues appearances netting 15 times in the EFL.
THE BOSS Matt Gray was appointed interim manager for Sutton on the final day of the 2018-19 season. He was formally appointed on May 1, 2019, and in just his second full season in charge took the Us to the Football League. After youth spells at Spurs and Cardiff, Gray had a playing career at Barnet, Hayes and Havant and Waterlooville but it was cut short at just 25 due to injuries. As of January 4, 2022, he has an impressive win record of 47.06% with 56 wins and 34 defeats from 119 games.

LATEST NEWS WELL, HELLO SUTTON Hopefully, Sutton’s mascot - “Jenny the Giraffe” - will have made the trip up from South London this afternoon. I think I’m right in saying that “Jenny” is the only mascot of the female gender in League Two. That’ll give Boro the Bear something to reckon with, methinks! How well I remember the days of travelling down to the old Gander Green Lane stadium. Back in those days, the M25 was a new motorway, and there was a novelty factor involved in the journey. Not now though! The Sutton United Supporters’ Trust (SUST) is the recognised representative body of the club’s fans. The chair of SUST is Gareth Miller, whose acquaintance I have yet to have the pleasure. Gareth’s board includes Kelly & Paul Chalmers, Dave Rayner, John James and Alison Denyer - who runs the Supporters’ Club shop on match days. Hope you guys all have a pleasant visit to Stevenage this afternoon.
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION (FSA) The FSA are seeking nominations of fans who have made the biggest difference to the supporter movement over the course of 2021. The first award is for services to the wider football supporter movement. It is designed to recognise those fans that not only volunteer at their own trust or supporters group, but who provide support and advice to others from across the game, showing that we are best when we are united and work in a common interest. The second award recognises and celebrates those women who have given their time and dedication to the fans’ movement. If you would like to nominate a deserving

supporter for either of the awards, please email info@thefsa.org.uk with their name, the supporters group they represent, and a short statement (no more than 500 words) of why they are deserving of recognition. The deadline for nominations is Monday 17th January, and an FSA panel will convene to decide the winners by the end of the month.
MEMORY LANE I wonder how many of you reading this can remember the old Broadhall Way stadium back in 1968? Great big sturdy, sentinel floodlights in each corner of the ground. Note the flag flying from the one on the right. Can anyone remember why? Moreover, what used to be on the left hand floodlight - and why? Contact me here Lloyd@ SFCSA.co.uk - and I’ll let you know. Incidentally, did you know that the small ramshackle stand at the top right of the picture was rescued from the old London Road ground and re-built in situ by volunteer members of the Supporters’ Club?
