Greetings, and welcome back to the Laithwaite Community Stadium as we welcome Slough Town for our first FA Cup Fixture of the 24/25 season.

Michael and the lads head into the game off the back of a well-earnt point – only a late penalty prevented us from taking all 3-points from an in-form York City last Saturday.

The value and importance of this competition cannot be understated – many a magical memory has been made at the Laithwaite

Community Stadium through the wonders of the FA Cup, and we hope this tonight’s fixture is no exception. Read on through this very special FA Cup edition of our programme, and relive our most telling tales.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR MATCH & BALL SPONSOR

I am delighted to welcome Sport Focus Coaching to the LCS as our Match Sponsor for today’s game – they deliver high quality fun, engaging and educational classes for 4-11

year olds. The club have donated our Ball Sponsorship to Oakleaf Enterprise, a Guildford based mental health charity that I have had the honour of recently being introduced to, and am incredibly excited to work closely with as the season progresses.

THE COMMUNITY COLUMN

The club released the 2nd edition of our Community Column – a snapshot of all the community work our club and partners have been involved in over the last few weeks –you can check it out here:

A THANK YOU TO THE CARDS TRUST & OUR FAN WALL

Lastly, I’d like to take this time to say a personal thank you to all the wonderful volunteers at the Cards Trust. Their tireless dedication and commitment to the club has been unbelievable, but tonight we are delighted to offer 12 of them the chance to kick-back and relax in the Geoff Chapple Lounge as guests of the club. You’ll have hopefully also noticed the installation of our “Fan Wall”, located on the Cardinals Bar – please purchase a plaque to show your support here.

As always, I am keen to hear from fans with any feedback (good or bad!), ideas of inspirations – drop me a note on simon. jones@wokingfc.co.uk

AHEAd of THE GAME

Woking enter the 2024/25 FA Cup with the visit of National League South side Slough Town to the Laithwaite on Saturday. In what will be Michael Doyle’s first FA Cup game in charge of the Cards, he will hope to avoid a big banana skin in the form of the high-flying Rebels.

As mentioned in Ben Turner’s interview last Saturday, Timi Odusina could be back in contention for this game, whilst Dennon Lewis and Harry Beautyman have also made recoveries from injury and featured against York. Max Dyche served his suspension for five bookings on Saturday and will also be available, giving Doyle plenty of options.

OPPOSITION WATCH

Slough Town finished 10th in last season’s National League South and gave themselves a solid foundation to build on for this season. Despite the likes of former Woking hero John Goddard and defenders Temi Eweka and Tyrese Dyce departing for Maidstone and Maidenhead respectively, manager Scott Davies has made some impressive additions, including former Woking striker Sam Evans.

Slough’s top scorer is none other than former Cardinal loanee Slavi Spasov, the 22-year-old Bulgarian with four goals in six games. One to watch is 25-year-old centre half Dan Bayliss, enjoying his second season at National League South level following his move from Bracknell Town. The Rebels have had to overcome two qualifying rounds to get to this stage, beating two step 3 sides

in Chichester City, who were defeated 2-1 at Arbour Park, before a 3-0 away win at Chatham Town, which was ‘anything but straightforward’, according to assistant manager Tony Fontenelle.

Last season in the FA Cup, Slough held National League side Ebbsfleet United to a draw, defeating them 2-0 in the replay at Arbour Park to set up a tie with League Two outfit Grimsby Town. A 1-1 draw at home saw boss Davies score, but in the replay, the Mariners were 7-2 victors, including a goal for Woking midfielder Jamie Andrews.

The reverse fixture saw Slough win at the Laithwaite for the first time since 1993, with Francis Amartey, now back at the Rebels, with the only goal.

Overall, there have been 49 meetings between the sides, with Woking victorious on 22 occasions, Slough triumphant 17 times, and 10 draws.

SloUGH ToWN

www.sloughtownfc.net

Slough Town begins the 2024/25 season with several exciting new players bedding in and the considerable benefit of a new 50-year lease on Arbour Park. Numerous improvements have been made, and the Board, along with the A23 Football Group, has now settled into their role as majority owners. November 2022 saw a change in management for the Rebels, with Scott Davies, the former club captain, taking on the role of Team Manager. Scott, who steered Slough to safety last season, is now focused on rebuilding the side for the new campaign, bringing renewed optimism to the club.

After a remarkable decade at the helm, Neil Baker and Jon Underwood stepped down as managers, much to the disappointment but sincere gratitude of supporters and the Board alike. Their departure marked the end of a historic era. Baker and Underwood took over in 2013, and in their first season, Slough Town won the Southern League Division One Central play-offs in thrilling fashion. The final, played at Kettering, saw the Rebels down 2-0 at half-time, but a stunning comeback in the second half resulted in a 3-2 victory, securing promotion to the Southern League Premier Division. It was a match that

fans will remember for years, epitomizing the spirit and resilience that Baker and Underwood instilled in their team.

The next two seasons saw the Rebels consolidate their position in the Southern League Premier Division, and in 2016/17, Slough Town reached the play-offs but were beaten by Leamington in the semi-finals. The following season, however, was one of the club’s finest in recent memory. Finishing third in the league, Slough earned another play-off spot and, after defeating Kettering Town in the semi-finals, traveled to King’s Lynn Town for the final. The atmosphere was electric, and despite going behind early in the game, Slough equalized through Flood just before half-time. As the match wore on, Slough grew in confidence, and when Williams scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, it sparked wild celebrations. Slough Town had regained their place in the National League South after 20 long years.

Their first season back in the National League South was a promising one. The Rebels finished just two points shy of a play-off place, a remarkable achievement considering the jump in competition level. However, the following two seasons were heavily disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019/20, Slough were well-positioned for another play-off push when the season was cut short in March. Although the Rebels were awarded a fifth-place finish based on points per game, they were defeated by Dartford in the play-offs at Arbour Park, a game that was played behind closed doors due to lockdown restrictions. The 2020/21 season was similarly impacted by the pandemic, with the campaign being declared null and void after only a few months.

Despite these setbacks, Slough Town remained competitive, though the margins in the National League South proved finer than expected. The league is highly competitive, with most teams

capable of beating each other on any given day. For Slough, this meant that results often hinged on small moments of brilliance or lapses in concentration. In the 2019/20 FA Cup, for example, Slough beat Flackwell Heath in their first-round qualifying tie but were knocked out in a replay at home to Chippenham Town. The first match had been a rollercoaster, with Slough taking a 2-1 lead before conceding twice and needing a stoppage-time equalizer from Bird to force a replay. However, Chippenham were the better side in the replay, winning 3-2 to advance.

FA Cup runs have provided some of the most memorable moments in Slough Town’s recent history. In 2017, the Rebels embarked on a thrilling journey to the second round, which for a club of Slough’s stature felt akin to a Premier League side reaching the final. Their cup run began with a 3-1 win at Berkhamsted, followed by a 3-2 victory over Dulwich Hamlet. A narrow 2-1 win against Poole Town saw them through to the first round proper, where they faced Folkestone Invicta. A 1-0 victory set up a trip to Gainsborough Trinity, and Slough produced one of their best performances in recent memory, running out 6-0 winners. The second round draw pitted Slough against League One Rochdale, and despite a brave fight, the Rebels were beaten 4-0.

The following season, Slough reached the second round of the FA Cup once again. After defeating Eastbourne Borough 2-1 in the fourth qualifying round, the Rebels were drawn against National League Premier side Sutton United. A 0-0 draw away from home forced a replay, and in a dramatic penalty shootout, Slough triumphed 8-7 to set up a second-round tie against League One Gillingham. The match was played at Arbour Park in front of a sell-out crowd, and although Slough dominated the first half, they were unable to capitalize on their chances. Gillingham equalized early in the second half, and despite Slough’s best efforts, the game ended 1-1, sending the tie to a replay. Unfortunately, Gillingham won the replay 1-0 to progress to the third round.

Slough’s FA Cup exploits in the 2010s were reminiscent of some of their famous cup runs from previous decades. In 2012/13, for example, the Rebels reached the first round proper and faced Conference Premier side Mansfield Town. After a 0-0 draw in the first match, Slough took Mansfield to extra time in the replay, but ultimately lost on penalties after 210 minutes of closely fought football. It was a gallant effort from the Rebels, who had been massive underdogs going into the tie. Another memorable FA Cup moment came in 2004, when Slough reached the second round by defeating League One Walsall 2-1, replicating their success against Millwall in the 1980s. Local hero Gary Attrell scored the winning goal against Walsall, just as he had done 20 years earlier against Millwall.

Slough Town’s FA Cup history stretches back over a century, and they have regularly reached the proper rounds, playing the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Reading (twice), Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle, Birmingham City, and Swansea City. One of the most famous victories in the club’s history came in 1983, when the Rebels knocked out Millwall, a match still fondly remembered by fans today.

The history of Slough Town Football Club is a long and storied one. The club’s origins can be traced back to 1873, when they played their first fixture against Windsor Albion under the name “The Slows.” In 1876, under the leadership of Club Secretary Mr. Sargeant, the club was re-named Slough Rangers. In 1883, the club merged with Slough Cricket Club and became known as Slough Athletic, though the two clubs split five years later.

Over the next few years, Slough sought to strengthen their footballing presence by merging with other local teams, including Slough Albion, the Young Men’s Friendly Society, and the Ottos. Slough Ramblers also merged with the club, though Chalvey, another local team, chose not to join forces. By the late 19th century, the club had adopted the name Slough F.C.

TUESDAY 1ST OCTOBER

Eastbourne Borough 0 – 2 Woking; FA Youth Cup Second Round (of) Qualifying

Reach TV Stadium, Priory Lane, Eastbourne

Eastbourne Borough came in to the game with two wins from two games in the Isthmian Youth League South Division, and Woking were aware that they needed to respect their opponent in order to get through to the next round.

Joel Jennison-Leppa and Leo Christopher have started their first year at the Academy well, and earnt themselves places in the starting line-up alongside the established second years, with the bench largely made up of their promising first-year peers.

Woking started brightly, with Stanley Kyle and Harvey Brook leading the forward line well, and after six minutes Brook had a shot from

twelve yards tipped on to the post by Whiteside, a confidence boost for the Borough custodian who was struggling with the blustery conditions.

Eastbourne looked dangerous on the break, with Foden showing good wing play, and Mikey Verga was called in to action to gather a shot when Woking were untidy clearing their lines. Both sides were closing down well, although Woking were slowly getting the upper hand, and were quicker to the loose balls.

On 18 minutes Brook crossed to Kyle, who did well to make himself space, but shot wide under pressure. And a few minutes later Kyle hit another shot wide from long-range. A passing move between Brook, Kyle and Jacob Farr (encouraged to get forwards from his left wingback position) gave Lucas Boxall a chance to shoot from six yards, but his control, unusually, let him down.

Aidy Silverstein passing the ball out of defence nicely along the ground was giving Woking control in the difficult conditions, and as we reached the half-hour mark the home coaches could be heard bemoaning their charges for watching Woking. Although Verga did have to be quick off his line to smother an Eastbourne break.

A Woking goal seemed imminent, Kyle bringing another good save out of Whiteside, and Brook frustrated to see his touch on Louis Pask’s cross put the ball over the bar. The last five minutes of the half were to prove decisive.

On 41 minutes Woking took the lead. Play took Boxall towards the left corner, but he was still able to get in a telling cross, and Pask, cutting in sharply from the right gave the ‘keeper no chance with his firmly-hit close-range shot. Fitting reward for Woking’s having the better of the play.

As the half drew to a close Woking, somewhat fortuitously, doubled their advantage. Farr won a free-kick on Woking’s left side, about 35 yards from goal, and Jermaine Junior Young curled a fine inswinging cross to the far post, which eluded everyone and bounced in to the top corner of the net.

One sensed that this was ‘job done’ for Woking, Eastbourne looking to have tired after battling well at the start, and leaving for the half-time break looking rather deflated.

Half-time: Eastbourne Borough 0 – 2 Woking

The second-half would see more Woking dominance, without them adding to their halftime lead. Within the first minute Christopher’s shot from Pask’s cross was deflected over, and this set the tone for the half.

There was a free-kick for Eastbourne which somehow evaded everyone on its way wide, but Farr, Kyle and Christopher all had chances before the half-way point of the half saw a goalmouth scramble that the Cards somehow managed not to convert in to a goal.

With Young’s excellent free-kick delivery a feature of Woking’s play, Eastbourne were finding it hard to create any meaningful chances. Kyle came closest to adding a third, twice forcing good, diving saves from Whiteside, as Woking saw out the game on the attack.

A convincing victory for the young Cards with a Third Round Qualifying tie away at Ramsgate the reward. Jennison-Leppa and Christopher played well, guided by their older teammates, with Akinwalere, Boyle and Ledbury all doing well when they came on.

THURSDAY 3RD OCTOBER

Woking U21 1 - 2 Slough Town U21; The Michael Bidmead (Suburban League) Challenge Cup, 1st Round, Redding Way, Knaphill

With this game falling in the same week as the FA Youth Cup game, here was an opportunity for those who had not been involved at Eastbourne to put forward their claim for inclusion in the squad for the tie at Ramsgate in the next round.

Slough started the stronger, Bob Honey making a smart save at his near post after three minutes, Ben Bradley adjudged to have beaten the offside trap to get his shot in. Kian Berry had a chance a minute later but did not unduly trouble the Woking ‘keeper with his underhit shot.

Slough continued to have the upper hand, without really threatening the Woking goal, until on 22 minutes Bradley saw his shot from 20 yards very well tipped over the bar by Honey. This direction of play continued and on 28 minutes Slough had the lead, Joao Paulo Borges Manzan playing a very good through ball to Berry, who fired home under Honey from 10 yards.

Woking fought well to get back in to the game, and had the equaliser on 37 minutes. Saadiq Bangura-Kerr won a free kick about 30 yards out, which Tommy Seale hit against the bar, Bobby Lawrence’s header kept the chance alive and Jayden Smith was able to nod home from a few yards out.

This buoyed Woking and Max Goldsworthy, Charlie Sweeney, Jack O’Shea Bashford, Seale and Smith were all involved as the Cards passing and running with the ball improved. However, the corners they won did not create any clear chances, and the game remained tied going to the break.

Half-time: Woking 1 Slough Town 1

Woking looked to set a marker early in the half, although Seale’s challenge on Jake Rangecroft, which earned a yellow card, reflected that the Slough player was having a good game, and often having the upper hand, in the midfield tussle. As solid as Woking were, they were struggling to find their passing rhythm.

Honey sought to encourage his teammates, calling for more movement, but Slough were growing in confidence and nearly took the lead after a goalmouth scramble on 58 minutes, the ball ending up the right side of the post from a Woking point of view.

Woking responded with a triple substitution, which lifted them, Goldsworthy winning the ball and playing a neat one-two with Jalil Page, before his shot was saved by the outstretched leg of Finley Prieg.

Woking did have another chance to regain the lead, Sweeney getting his head to a Seale corner, but Honey was called in to action again, with two more good stops, before he was unable to prevent Slough going ahead on 76 minutes. Woking’s passing went awry on the edge of their own area, and Jayden Williams took full advantage, his low shot powerful enough to defeat the ‘keeper’s hand and find the bottom corner.

Woking did come close to taking the tie to penalties, Seale’s shot from 30 yards was aiming for the top corner before being acrobatically tipped wide by Prieg, and a goalmouth scramble a few minutes from time saw Woking unable to land a decisive blow.

Woking’s players might perhaps look to their lack of familiarity with one another, but they will want to continue their development in the weeks ahead in order to fulfil their potential.

Woking: Bob Honey, George Galea-Elston, Ben Smith, Charlie Sweeney, Max Goldsworthy (Sean Bull 83), Tommy Seale (c), Bobby Lawrence (Roshan Cooper 59), Saadiq Bangura-Kerr (Jack Lewis 59), Jayden Smith, Jack O’Shea Bashford (Ryan Scott 59), Jalil Page. Unused sub: Jack Roles (GK).

Goal: Smith J. 37.

Slough Town: Finley Prieg, Truman Kemp, Alex Thomas (Jurij Neretin 77), Pablo Lima, Joao Paulo Borges Manzan (Hari Sohi 70), Alex Vick (Tyler Lagmay 66), Jake Rangecroft, Ben Bradley, Ronnie Rock, Pablo Fernandez Galindo, Kian Berry (Jayden Williams 62). Unused sub: Luka Jankovic (GK).

TACAdEMY

he Woking FC Academy has been operating in its current format for over a decade with the aim of helping talented young footballers make progress into the club's first team set up or in their sporting careers whilst continuing with their academic studies.

For the 2024/25 season, the youth and academy setup runs in three stages; a pre-academy for six to nine-year-olds, a youth academy for nine to 16-year-olds, and a full-time academy for talented young players above the age of 16, including an education plan.

The Academy works with the Football Club's partner charitable and community organisation, Cardinals in the Community (CITC).

Notable academy graduates in recent history include Woking legends Craig Ross and Joe McNerney, Wrexham's Ollie Palmer, and exChelsea and now-Reading's Jayden Wareham.

PRE-ACADEMY

The Pre-Academy is for the very youngest players, covering U7s, U8s and U9s. Meeting once a week, players train and learn in a fun and friendly environment under the watchful eye of our coaches. Players that show real talent have the opportunity to progress to Woking FC Academy Youth.

The Pre-Academy trains at The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Thursdays, 17:00 - 18:00.

YOUTH ACADEMY

Starting with U9s and progressing through the age groups right up to U16s, players train with our Academy coaches and have the opportunity to play competitively in the Junior Premier League. Training is held twice weekly at CITC’s sports hub, within the grounds of Woking College, and matches are played on Saturdays. At this level, players are able to continue playing for their grassroots clubs.

As with the main Academy, players receive a progress report twice per season, which helps identify areas of their game to work on and improve. U16s players are assessed throughout the season with a view to being invited to join Woking FC Academy.

WOKING FC ACADEMY

Woking FC Academy is a National League licensed academy. We aim to develop each and every player to reach their full potential, instilling ambition and a professional attitude. We work as closely as possible to Category 3 Academy standards, creating a professional environment in which players thrive.

Players train 5-6 hours per week at CITC’s sports hub. Their development is supported by video analysis of training and matches, group workshops and strength and conditioning sessions. One-to-one reviews are held twice every season, along with player reports so that both the coaching staff and the players themselves have a clear focus on individual development.

Woking FC Academy plays competitive matches in the U18 Isthmian League, U19 National League and also have the opportunity to play in U23 fixtures. Players in our Elite Development Plan (EDP) compete in the Tactic League and National B League. Cup competitions are a feature of the fixture calendar. Pre-season training includes friendlies and there are opportunities to travel abroad for football tours and tournaments, including the Gothia Cup.

Our football timetable is planned in conjunction with players’ education. Academy players can

choose to attend Woking College or focus on gaining the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, which is delivered by SCL Education at Westfield FC. Players on the EDP pathway study towards the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (equivalent to 3 A levels) with SCL.
