CREATIVE FABRIC

The concept of creativity was always connected with production until the industrial revolution when we started to see this duality: Technology and production in factories and art and creativity in artists’ workshops. This situation remained for a long time, but today it is changing and we are seeing contemporary workshops and studios making use of technology without sacrificing creativity or individuality. So my idea was to create a variety of spaces for the artists combining the technology found in factories, the creativity, and individuality of the workshops and providing exhibition spaces for their production. A place where artists and designers produce, learn and teach, exhibit and sell their products. The workshops and studios will be supported by the needed technology. Exhibition spaces will be provided to exhibit their products. The theme was related to the textile industry, as it is an industry supported by the government and practiced at an individual scale. In addition to that, Izmir has a lot of textile factories and has multiple universities teaching textile-related majors. So making a textile arts and design center fits into the urban context of Izmir city.

RETHINKING THE FUTURE CBD AND WATERFRONT OF BAYRAKLI IN IZMIR This project was an urban project dealing with Bayrakli district in Izmir. The site includes some industrial buildings and houses. One of the main problems of the site is the disconnection between the coast and the inner part, as they are separated by the highway and a railway. The area is expected to be a Central Business District (CBD) in the future and to become an important node for the city. We started by analyzing the city on a large scale then focused on our site. We found that Izmir is already hosting a lot of events from different sectors daily, weekly, monthly and yearly and it has the potential to become an important centre for events not only at the local scale but also at an international scale due to the city’s history and location. Therefore we decided to make a new concept of the CBD which is accessible by all classes of citizens and well-connected with the transportation network of the city. The CBD will provide a variety of spaces to host multiple local and international events. Perpendicular axes towards the sea were created to make a better connection between the sea and the CBD. A diagonal axis is connecting the perpendicular axes together and connecting the CBD with Smyrna, the historical site.

CRAFTS’ AVENUE SHOPPING SHOPPING

ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT AT AKKÖPRÜ: A NEW FORM OF RIVERFRONT COMMUNITY In this project, we were asked to design houses and workshops for the craftsmen of Ankara along the Çubuk stream. My starting point was analyzing the existing situation and how working, shopping and living are separated and comparing it with how it was in the arts and crafts movement and the past and how living working and shopping were all integrated creating a flexible, functional and enjoyable environment. So I decided to integrate Living, shopping and working together using avenues where people could walk, shop and enjoy. I tried to keep all the workshops facades open to the walkers in the avenue to watch the workers working. Also, all the houses are having a nice view facing the stream.

WELCOME TO KONYA

A HOSTEL WITH A RAILWAY STATION MUSEUM In this project we were asked to design a hostel with a theme next to Konya Railway Station in Konya, Turkey. This city has great importance from different perspectives. It has religious, historical, agricultural and industrial importance. The railway station, which was constructed by a German company, is also important due to its historical role as a significant station, along the Istanbul-Baghdad railway line. Analyzing the surrounding context of the railway station I decided to focus on the industrial perspective. “THERE IS NO MORE DRAMATIC OR POTENT SYMBOL OF INDUSTRY THAN THE RAILWAY STATIONS”

A CONTEMPORARY HOUSE FOR A CONTEMPORARY FAMILY A villa for a small family with a garden and a swimming pool for living and relaxing. I tried to respect the principles of privacy while designing the villa as it is a living place. Analyzing the type of spaces needed for the villa I found that there are three types of spaces: private sleeping spaces, shared living spaces and open spaces. In order to respect the privacy of the occupants, I separated the living and sleeping spaces and shifted them to create an open space resembled in the garden and the swimming pool. The spaces of living and sleeping were resembled in two masses above each other. After that, the upper mass was rotated to enclose a space using the two masses. The mass in the ground floor includes the garage, the entrance and the bedrooms. While the upper mass includes the living space and the kitchen. As the upper mass is elevated, it creates a semi-open space for the entrance. “Brise-Soleil were used on the facade to provide privacy and reduce heat gain.

LIBRARY WITH SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH CENTRES While designing the scientific research centre and the library, we tried to abstract both institutions and reached a point where the former represents research and the latter represents knowledge. At the early beginning of humankind, when neither the concept of research nor library existed, people discarded things and enquired about what fascinated them. Gradually, these layers of information were metaphorically compiled through the process of informal research. The library stores knowledge that was produced by research. Without research, there would be no library or knowledge storage. Our conclusion was that research supports knowledge. We tried to manifest this idea into an architectonic way where the library would be a cantilevered extension of the research centre. Our intention was to create a microcosm within the borders of our site. This leads us to design a public space that pertains to different qualities. The cantilevered library becomes a semi-open area for the self that extends to become an open area with benches, open spaces and green areas. At the southern part of our site, the ramp leads the self to a designed lake with seating spaces alongside it. The articulation of the roof is to give a more dynamic experience to the visitor.

MODERN HOUSE

SITE PLAN

This house was designed for the modern architecture history course to apply modern architecture principles and understand them. I designed this house with respect to Le Corbusier’s points of modern architecture and especially the pilotis, free facade and the free plan. Having the columns as the structural elements helped in having a plan free from structural walls that freed up the plan design. It also makes the design of the facade free by shifting the columns behind the facade. Later the same house was used during the Building Detail Modeling course to produce construction and detail drawings on various scales. All the drawings and models were produced using Revit 2017.
