Inside of each of us is a perfect, yet quiet, voice that whispers all the things that are right and wrong for us. Whether this is a passion, a career choice, or a danger forewarned, our inner guide is there, directing us in accordance with what we really want from life and our values across all aspects of our lives.

T

his is different to the concept of a conscience. It’s not guilt-driven; that’s more ego. The inner guide is a truth gauge that will often come as an extension of what is or is not aligned to “a good fit”. It can be a voice that shouts “this isn’t right”, but is often missed over the roar of our heartsong when feelings, obligations, or emotions are involved. I have lived some magical yet tragic, polarised plotlines which I wish to share, even though on the surface, they have little correlation. In sharing them, you’ll see a fine juxtaposition between the concept of the inner guide’s search for truth and the paralysis that fear (which is so often confused for the inner guide) can bring when we have suffered lies or are trying to avoid repeating past mistakes and experiences. Inner guidance keeps us centred to what feels good and is right for us, whereas fear can drive us to paranoia, to the point of self-sabotage and the inability to trust. Take from each of these stories what you will. They are, however, a fine juxtaposition between the seeking of truth and the paralysis faced when we have been lied to, to the point of self-sabotage and the inability to trust. I have loved someone so afflicted from a gaslighting ex that he could not trust anything or anyone, not even his own feelings. He picked everything apart nonsensically and pushed me aside out of fear of experiencing exactly the

circumstances with his ex. Oddly, he never stood up to the gaslighter and always sided with them to avoid confrontation. It was an interesting dynamic to observe the ‘victim and prey’ in a cycle that never transformed or evolved. Instead, his feelings about the gaslighter manifested in other relationships, as he projected mistrust elsewhere as an avoidance mechanism from facing the real bully. He is an example of fear that was confused for an inner voice and as such, perpetuated his circumstances whilst dowsing out a healthy love. I found myself smitten with a man who, on paper, was only what dreams are made of – professional, tall, witty, sexy, and utterly and divinely English with an accent like silk – only to find that he was a prolific liar who changed details about himself entirely. He created an identity of ‘almost Simon’ – just enough accurate detail to click with me and form a bond but not too much of the real Simon so as to shield from breakage his otherwise beautifully posed family portrait, sitting ever so delicately upon a shelf in their country cottage. I once looked after someone dutifully, whose sight had been taken, and who, at only 33, could no longer have sex and whose temper would rage justifiably in frustration, grieving the loss of his future. I note that I blamed myself when his anger was turned on me in frustration. I allowed obligation and guilt to guide me even after I confessed I could not prioritise his needs above my own and that of my family’s any longer. In every one of these scenarios, I had very strong whispers from my inner guide straight along the way. In some cases, I listened. In others, I proceeded with a guarded heart, fully aware of the risk I was taking in favour of witnessing the beauty of the person and the experience rather than seeking to control an outcome. In others, I ignored it completely and allowed someone to taint my trust in my abilities and senses, as well as to hijack the decisions around the direction that was right for me. Do you do that? Ignore your inner guide? Excuse it away? Rationalise that it is paranoia? That your standards are just too high? Perhaps you call yourself unfair? Do you allow someone else to tell you that you are simply risk-assessing a la project management style and needlessly over-analysing? Do you let others tell you every reason in the book that your concerns are merely worries?

“Do you do that? Ignore your inner guide? Excuse it away? Rationalise that it is paranoia?” That your beliefs are simply… wrong? Yeah, me too. I mean, clearly, look at the narratives above and you’ll see without question I’ve made a pig’s ear of love in my time. In every scenario, I questioned “I think we want different things”, “I think he needs a carer, not a partner, but I can’t leave or he’ll think it’s his health”, “this man is clearly not for me but it’s flattering and what if I end up alone”, “this man gives off serious married vibes – but perhaps I’m just paranoid having been so wronged previously… I feel terrible”. Oddly, in all of these anecdotes, there is an element to my decisions which can only be explained by saying that there were times where I felt that the strong one could save a weaker party. Because the weaker one was somehow beautiful and I wanted to see him stand tall again, whole, having been so abused and repressed for so long - despite a degree of blindness to my own unhappiness. I’m using love as an example because it’s gotten me into so much heartache in my life and because it’s an easy example of where that tiny little voice within my head is so often outweighed by the party going on in the heart. And vice versa, really. You can see sometimes that regardless of which is loudest, head or heart, we can only do what we think is right for us in the circumstances. And that’s what it comes down to, really – how does it make us feel? It doesn’t matter what is right or what the accurate perception is. What matters is whether it is worth the struggle. Take married guy, for example. Maybe I would have been happy being a mistress, and a comfortable

one at that! But my central hopes and dreams were to be with a lovely man I could cherish and be cherished by in return. So that set up, nah, not for me. Same with the poor victim of gaslighting. How was he to know who was doing what to whom? He couldn’t. He could only gauge against his gut feeling of what felt good and what was simply added pressure he didn’t need. I think, sometimes, there is no right or wrong. There is not a certainty or guideline of “head should always conquer heart”, either. We have to navigate it carefully and I think this is where the inner guide, the joy gauge, comes into play. All of us are just trying to be happy. If you really think about it, that’s true. And it can’t be the case that we ever fully know and understand the real picture. We can only understand it in the way it applies to us. Once we’ve applied it to the criteria of shit we are willing to engage in, weighed carefully against the joy it brings in return, only then can we say definitively whether it’s good or not. The key is to give that tiny little whisper deep inside the street cred it deserves. Because if you are honest with yourself, you will find it vocalises a core desired feeling, a want, a need, from the very start. Listen to it, and you just might save yourself a lot of heartache.

Eric Burns (“E Burns”) has quickly built a reputation in the world of fashion for being known as “E Burns”, he continues to solidify his name as a Style Expert, Influencer, and Brand Ambassador . Seamlessly transforming his clients’ one image at a time, and developing their style into a brand with a unique twist to fit to each personality. An L.A. native and Co-Owner of Prep Jerks Inc. which launched in 2005. Eric is also a the LA Brand Ambassador for QloakLa Style house-boutique and a variety of popular brands. Describe your business for me - what is your focus, what’s its ethos, and for what do you want to be really known for as a person and as a brand? I’m a Celebrity Style Expert, Creative Director & Designer. In other words, I evolve style for celebs and tastemakers. I’m an all around creative when in comes to fashion, and I want to be known as a style icon and trendsetter, a household name within the fashion industry, as a professional who “did it his way” and paved the way for aspiring professionals in the field of styling, creative direction and design.

building my own business. There is a theory that people who work with others in a service capacity are healers in their own right - do you see the synergy and how does that hold true for you, if it resonates? Yes, in some ways, we are healers more like “confidence boosters” - and we make clients feel good about themselves. Imagery is everything. My motto is “look good at all times no matter where you are”. Yes, I do see the synergy and it definitely holds true to any one who can give someone confidence and make them feel better about themselves by making them look good. I would definitely say that’s a form of healing. Where would you say you are in terms of your career ascent? Where are you now and where are you headed? I’m nowhere near where I want to be but I’m definitely headed in the right direction. I feel like I’m definitely in a good place and constantly growing my business, but I have a lot more to accomplish. It’s always funny hearing people say how proud they are of me, how much they look up to me and how much

progress I’ve made. But for me, it feels like I’ve just started. Would you say you always had a vision for your life’s purpose, and if you did, was fashion “it”? If “it” wasn’t necessarily fashion, was this something you stumbled into, or was it a strategic manifestation/expression of the creative inside of you? I’ve always known I was going to end up in the fashion industry but didn’t know exactly what I would end up doing. I’ve always been creative, though. Tell me what home life was like. Did you have a creative hand to guide you as you followed your dreams, or was life more of a struggle with only your own internal compass guiding you? I grew in a single parent home, with my mom and 2 brothers. I’m the middle child, and life was pretty normal. I didn’t grow up in the best neighbourhood, but I did my best to stay out of trouble. I could have gone in a totally different direction due to some of the people I grew up around but I took a different route, a more creative route. Some could say it wasn’t what was expected but I did what I knew and moved in the direction of what I


knew I was meant to be. Was there struggle along the way, even just amongst friends or in your school and if there was, what did this do to help refine your character and keep you motivated? There was no real struggle. I’ve never really cared what people thought about me growing up in a ganginfested neighbourhood. Being into fashion wasn’t the norm but most people understood I was who I was and could adapt to my surroundings. My character was moulded to

understand all types of people, and I’m straight forward, so I didn’t have any problems. What you see is what you get with me. Do you feel you had a “big break” or was your career more of a continual and gradual climb? Was this satisfying for you, and if it had its trials, can you tell us how you managed the highs and lows with all the work involved? A gradual climb I would say. I’ve definitely paid my dues. It was definitely satisfying for me and taught me a lot about the good and bad and the ins and outs of the industry.

Is this real, or do you find that you have a role in helping people overcome certain blocks or limits they have on themselves? Can you expand on this a little, with or without naming names? Any insight that may help our readers see some insight into some of the softer issues that some people end up carrying around that hold them back, and how working with a style expert when they are ready to go to the next level can really help them across so many aspects of their lives and circumstances. How can working with a style expert transform or elevate a client’s position in their industry, particularly one who is so connected and has been in the game as long as you? I’m hired to give my clients what they don’t already have within their platform. My job is to take them to the next level, image-wise, and, in turn, when a client’s style is elevated, it draws attention to them, and can elevate their status and their platform. Can you tell us what that process is like? For me, the process is pretty easy.

Firstly, I consult to understand the needs of the client, and then we come to a medium, and then I execute. The thing you have to remember is to keep the client happy but at the same time show them something new to get them out of their comfort zone. Even so, the client still has to be comfortable in their look. How do you manage your work / life balance? Honestly, I don’t! It all feels the same to me - living is working, working is living. I just try to enjoy each day and have as much fun as I can, when I can.

What are you currently working on, and how do you choose networking opportunities? I assume your time is going to be limited and it must be a balance to know which events and connections are worth your investment of time. Well, I’m currently working on a Brims collection, new clients, continuously creating, designing and doing creative direction for a few individuals and brands, restructuring my showroom, and working on a few new brand ambassador deals.

I’m definitely not there yet and have a long way to go. How does Eric Burns “the man” differ from E Burns “the brand” and how do you carefully choose projects to ensure you are aligned? Honestly, “Eric Burns & EBurns” are the same person – the only difference is that some people who know me in the industry might only know me as EBurns and don’t know my full name!

Describe your Mission. What’s it all about for you? What is the impact you are looking to make? Inspired by the power of imagery to inform, educate and coerce action, my mission is to use my creative power to protect nature.

What motivates me is that our oceans are in trouble, and people do not know it or do not feel it. Less than 2 percent of our oceans—the world’s largest source of life—is protected. If we allow the oceans to deteriorate much longer, we will lose our life support system. Think about this: every other breath we take comes from the sea (the plankton in the ocean produces 50% of the oxygen on Earth); more than 1 billion people depend on food from the ocean to survive. And perhaps most importantly, the ocean regulates our weather and climate patterns. It is imperative that we maintain the ecological integrity of this vast ecosystem. People must realise that we live on an ocean planet, and given its enormous influence on life on earth, we all are ocean creatures.

Through images, I want to bring this story to all the people who might not otherwise have a chance to experience and understand the oceans.

As a solution, aquaculture has all the potential to become a vital source of both food and employment but not the way it is carried out in so many places, especially here in British Columbia.

How old were you when you knew what you were destined to do? How did it unfold?

I was 19-years-old when I knew I wanted to save our planet’s precious resources. It took me another ten years to discover photography as my medium to communicate the urgency. Since then, my camera and my pen as I, too, love to write - have become my tools of choice.

By my last year of university, as a fisheries and aquaculture biologist, I had come to realise that what should be solutions to feed billions of people, have become new threats for our planet. The wasteful, shortsighted and greedy exploitation of marine resources by modern fishing fleets has already depleted 90% of the fish in the ocean in less than a 100 years! What will humanity eat the next 1,000 years?

I would like to know that thanks to my efforts, we were able to protect precious species and landscapes so that our children don’t have to struggle in an impoverished planet.

What’s next? What’s on the horizon? SeaLegacy is poised to become a very high profile player in the conservation world. We are planning 50 expeditions in the next ten years to the farthest corners of our oceans, and we plan to “bring” with us millions of young people that engage with us every day on social media. This is their planet, and they are scared and angry at the way it has been abused. Young people want to be part of the journey and part of the solution. In the next year, we will be working on the coast of British Columbia to highlight areas that should be protected as part of Canada’s commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity of protecting 10% of our oceans by 2020. We will also travel to Antarctica to help

promote the creation of a large marine protected area on the Antarctic Peninsula, and we will continue working in Northern Norway documenting orca and humpback populations as part of our North Atlantic conservation plan.

How would you describe what brings you the greatest joy in your current role? How do you cultivate or encapsulate joy on a daily basis? I suppose my biggest joy is to realise that my work actually does inspire others. Every day I get messages and emails from people all around the world who have found the inspiration they needed to give purpose to their own work. I also find immense joy in nature. There is no feeling like the feeling of plunging into the ocean and experiencing what it feels like to be a tiny speck in a vast blue wilderness. I

love the smell of salt, the feel of cold sea water, and more than anything, I love being in the company of great creatures. Swimming with sharks, whales, orcas and big schools of fish is an experience reserved for jvust a few. I know I am privileged to be one of those people, and it gives me joy to live up to the responsibility to share both the beauty and the urgency to protect it.

My partner, National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen and I founded SeaLegacy, a nonprofit organisation, to use our abilities as visual storytellers to protect the world’s oceans. At its core, Sea Legacy has as its mission to open the world’s eyes to the sea to help protect 20 percent of the world’s oceans by 2020.

What would you like women to most understand or consider – on a higher level – with regards to your role and your mission. Can you tell us more about SeaLegacy?

Best advice you ever received? “Be kind to everyone on your way up because you will meet them again on the way down.” I have learned that from my motherin-law, Louise Roy, who is a very thoughtful and generous woman. She has made a very successful business in real estate here on the Vancouver Island by being kind to everyone around her. Another great piece of advice is to not count other people’s blessings. Focus on the ones you have and be happy in the success of others.


What would be your #1 tip for women regarding finding the courage to take inspired action on what is most important to them? Silence your “peanut gallery”… all those small voices in our head that have been taught to us since we were little girls. The voices that make you doubt yourself, question your strength and abilities, compel you to surrender your ambitions and instead be demure and submissive. It is our peanut gallery that makes us fearful of adventure, risktaking, exploration. We must imagine ourselves in the roles we wish to play not the ones we have been allowed to play. For myself, I want to explore the world as a photographer. I want to challenge my physical endurance. I want to conquer my own insecurities. I do it by forcing myself to dive headfirst into every terrifying opportunity that life presents to me from speaking

in public to diving with orcas. I worry that every time I surrender to my peanut gallery, I become a little older, so instead, I plunge with all my passion into everything I do.

How do you balance between being a gifted photographer, conservationist, an avid traveller, a busy Mom, leader and so much more without dodging your own self-care? Maybe I realised at an early stage that there is no right way of balancing motherhood, career and personal ambition. There simply are no recipes for how to do this. Because of my upbringing in Mexican culture, I felt pressured to marry young. By the time I was 24, I had a stepson and a baby. I had finished my studies as a biochemical engineer but had dreamed of pursuing a Ph.D. just like my mom

had. The demands of wanting to be a good mother prevailed, and for a couple of years I mourned the death of my scientific and academic ambitions. I believe that a huge part of finding success is taking the next opportunity and attacking it with passion. Around the time my daughter was born, I was asked to contribute to the publishing of a conservation book series. Being a full-time mother, I worked from my basement as a writer, translator, editor and eventually as

a photographer. I also supported my then-husband in his work on conservation. It was in that role, as a mother and partner, that I began travelling to more remote corners of the world to visit conservation projects. It was also how I began taking photographs. When I look back, I realise how lucky I was. I was given amazing opportunities that allowed me to create a new career for myself, and I was able to do it all because I fearlessly embraced new challenges and learned from my many mistakes.


You must have some pretty long days. How do you keep your energy up and your focus consistent? How you stay PowHERful and on the top of your game? I like being a very active person and I have a healthy mix of activities that keep me fit, including running, biking, yoga and pilates. I also eat very little red meat and consume large amounts of vegetables. Sleep is very important, and I try to get at least 7 hours a night. I have a positive outlook on life and I embrace my work with as much energy and enthusiasm as I can muster. I love my life and I laugh often.

Describe collaboration and what the looks like/feels like on the ground – how does it show up in your life? Teamwork is paramount to the success of what I do, so although photography tends to be a solo activity, it requires the collaboration of

many others to achieve conservation results. A large part of my job is to craft partnerships with other photographers and organisations and find creative ways of working together towards a common goal. I also work with field assistants whose contribution to my work is part and parcel of the process of creating images. Collaboration comes naturally to me, so I almost don’t have to think about it.

Describe a favourite hobby or adventure. I collect beads from my travels and then combine them to make unique jewellery. In terms of adventure, I just love travelling and being in nature. When we get to be on assignment for extended periods of time, there is a peacefulness that overtakes me after a few weeks without internet or office work. My senses become more aware of minute details, and

I get completely absorbed into the photographic process. I am super lucky to have a job that feels like a holiday most of the time.

Favourite energy meal or snack (healthy). I love to cook and I am a very healthy cook, so lots of vegetables and flavours that come from great spices. Asian fusion, Mexican food, Mediterranean flavours are all part of my kitchen.

Favourite indulgence or treat. I have a weakness for good cheese and potato chips.

Top 3 things (still) on your Bucket List. I have been so lucky to check most of the items on my list, but there are a few things still I want to accomplish. More than anything, I would love to spend the next ten years exploring coastal communities around the world and learning

how people interact with the ocean. My bucket list includes visiting the Bajau people of Sulawesi, exploring Burma, and spending time in coastal areas of the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia. My biggest bucket list item, however, is to photograph the Indigenous people of my own country. I feel like I have not spent enough time in Mexico, and I would love the opportunity to create a body of work on the cultures and traditions of some of the more remote Mexican communities.

I never leave home without‌ My camera, of course. I have lots of cameras, but my favourite one is one that can fit in my purse, like my Sony A6000.

Your thoughts on mentoring young women? What do you feel your most valuable lessons to pass on are? I have been incredibly lucky to have worked with many amazing women both in photography and in conservation. I truly appreciate the wisdom shared with me by both peers and elders, so I feel a great responsibility to pass it on. I consistently work with younger photographers and filmmakers who are looking for a way to launch their


careers, and the most important lesson I can share is to not be afraid to lead and to lead with passion and compassion as these truly are the two key ingredients for a successful career. Most importantly, I subscribe to the discipline of writing goals. I encourage the women I mentor to write 100 goals every year. The first 20 goals are easy, but it is the next 80 goals that tell you who you really are, what you really want to accomplish and what truly makes you passionate. It is a great exercise!

Where do we go from here in terms of supporting and inspiring women to make an impact, to step-up and continue moving forward with their missions… regardless of how hard it may feel at times. #confidence #courage #connections #capital In my late 40s, I find myself stronger and more inspired than ever. I look forward to the next ten years in my career, and I can’t wait to meet other women along the way.

Each one different and as much an individual as a snowflake, with different backgrounds, diverse surroundings, varied obstacles and assorted goals in life. The most common denominator for women is not our strength or wisdom but the instilled ability to be a mother. Even though we all have the ability, what differs is the intensity. Some women feel the calling to mother much stronger than others, as well as the noticeable difference between first time moms and those of us who are headed towards our own baseball team. New mothers spend months decorating the new nursery. Research is conducted to find

the most soothing colour to paint the walls, fabric and patterns are agonised over in an effort to be chic but also neutral if the sex of the infant is a mystery until the “big day”. All the outfits, onesies and little booties are folded and in place and the change table is fully stocked, including items of whose purpose you’re unsure but they were in the baby section at the store so you must need them. The rocking chair is set at the proper angle as well as making sure every stuffed animal is in exactly the right position. Some first time mothers are positive they are going to do natural childbirth - after all, women have been giving birth since the beginning of time. Some think it’s better for the baby and the expectant momma wants to remember the entire birthing event and experience every sensation.

When the first delivery has come and gone and the next baby is due, things are done a little differently. It becomes apparent that the woman would give anything short of her soul to have an epidural or some type of pain medication. After three or four children, the “nursery” becomes a corner in the master bedroom for a few reasons. One of the reasons is because you can’t fit the crib in any of the other bedrooms now and any extra space has been taken over by toys and storage boxes of clothes you are either waiting for the kids to grow into or out of. Putting the baby in with the other kids increases the chances of midnight hunger cries

waking up all the kids who, for some reason, get a burst of energy and don’t go back to sleep until an hour before it’s time to get up. The most important reason at this point, though, is that sleep has become so precious you don’t want to trade a moment walking into another bedroom five times a night to feed the baby - precious minutes you could be sleeping. When it comes to babysitters, new mothers are extremely cautious. At first, they don’t even want to leave the baby and inevitably, when the time comes and they do, usually by force, go out, only grandma or nana will qualify for the privilege of babysitting. the best educational toys that are age appropriate as well as Fisher Price play sets, fun bathtub toys, Lego sets, toy cars and trucks or baby dolls that cry and pee. By the time the third or fourth child comes into the picture, they have no idea what a full set of anything looks like because so many pieces have been lost or destroyed already.

They only have a green, red, and black marker to colour with because all the other markers dried up when the lids were left off. The dolls that were once beautiful now look like riot victims with their hair chopped off or matted beyond any hope of untangling. There are no more nappies or food mix for the lifelike babies so the kids learn how to use paper towels or wash clothes. Doll clothes are lost or hard to catch after the older children manage to adorn Fido with the sweet little sundress. So, although it may be harder to relax when you have your first baby, try to relax - all the worrying and fussing will only give you wrinkles and grey hair and believe me, you get enough of those from the children without doing it to yourself!

Creamed Peas With Potatoes & Onions

I know, I know. I always say ‘this is one of my favorite dishes’, but this one really is too! Why would I share a dish I really don’t like? We should share and enjoy. I keep saying this over and over and I mean it; Enjoy your life with good food and good fellowship. Think about it, all your favourite comfort foods are the ones you grew up with, eating with family and friends. You know this already, but here it is again: the TV, computer and video games are not family! Call in the next door neighbor and share thrity minutes. Thirty minutes is not going to hurt for a quick bite to eat and catch up. Here is a quick trick: to make the best box-mac & cheese use butter and pepper.That’s it. Easy peasy!

INGREDIENTS 1-16 oz bag of frozen peas

2 cups cream or Half & Half

3 small red potatoes, or if you 4 tlbs butter-divided 2 & 2 can find them 2 cups new 2 tlbs flour potatoes 1 large onion

Salt & pepper to taste

Method ww ww

FYI: You can boil potatoes, peas and cook onions at the same time. Chop onion into small (but not too small) pieces. Place in 2 tlbs melted butter and sautĂŠ until onions are clear. Scoop onions into an oven-safe dish. Use pan to make sauce. Melt the other 2 tlbs butter and add the 2 tlbs flour. Mix until flour is absorbed in butter. Add Cream 1/2 cup at a time until all cream has been used and sauce is thick. Remove from heat.

Boil potatoes until fork tender, drain and add cool water.

Drain the water when cooled. Cut up red potatoes in small pieces and place in dish with onions (leave new potatoes as they are).

Boil water. Pour peas in water and bring to boil for 10 minutes. Remove and replace with cool water. Place drained peas into oven-safe dish with onions & potatoes.

Pour cream sauce over veggies and give a gentle stir to mix. Heat in oven covered at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

or the past few months, one of the highlights of my week has been writing and reading gratitude lists on the feed of a Facebook group I belong to.

On a Friday, we are invited to post 3 things that we are grateful for in the past week - and that simple action has changed my relationship with these people and, I think, with myself, too.

The group is connected to work - a small collection of fellow business owners - and it has capped numbers, a great vibe, no lurkers. We meet up once or twice a year and it is an amazing example of connection and collaboration overcoming competition and comparison.

I practice daily gratitude. Before falling asleep, I lie in bed and relish all the things in the day that have brought me joy. Sunlight through coloured glass on a windowsill, fresh eggs, the first roses blooming, a hug at the end of the day. It is a part of my routine and I find it powerful, calming, replenishing.

So often our presence on the internet is edited and filleted that we avoid truth, problems and shame. Trapped between the fear of washing dirty laundry in public and the comparison culture, we hide everything that may look bad. But somehow, this weekly gratitude is different, for over the weeks, a strain of vulnerability has appeared. Writing with witnesses means that our gratitude is no longer just for the fleeting pleasures of a day, but for strength to help a depressed friend, for the affection of an autistic child, for last minute reprieves and small steps towards recovery. There, in what is potentially a competitive arena vying for orders - we will stand, firm advocates for each other, a powerful force to ensure that all of us make it, thriving in our real lives with gratitude and vulnerability.

he Law of Attraction. Loved by New Agers and woo woos alike, poo-pooed by cynics and skeptics alike. It’s a rather polarising concept – a “Universal Law.” People either “get it” and grasp it with might, or they shun it completely. It can be hard to translate a spiritual concept like a Universal Law into mainstream practicality, but many people have done so successfully – especially when it comes to using the Law of Attraction to earn more money. It always seems like once it’s about making more money – something that many people place extremely

high value on – more people buy into it. Even if they won’t admit it publicly. Because, what if? Many books have been written on the subject, old and new, from The Master Key System to Kate Northrup’s Money: A Love Story. Other well-known books have alluded to using the Law of Attraction to attract things other than wealth and success. Books like those in The Secret series speak of using it to improve health, relationships, and even to help break bad habits. But it’s always the money books that appeal to those who might be newer to metaphysical concepts or other New Age-y stuff.

Why is that?

Why is it easier to take a leap of faith when there’s a possibility of miraculously manifesting money, but much harder when talking about improving things like skin, health, or self-image? Why is it easier to force your mind to think positively and abundantly when there’s money at stake, but not to eat healthier or practice activities of selfcare? Is it because those subjects are too woo-woo, too? Or is it something worse – that more people place value on money than they do on their own health and wellbeing? Sadly, the latter rings true. I understand. One of the hardest things to do when you’re feeling bad about something – whether it’s a circumstance around you, or something going on with you personally – is to keep a positive mindset. Life can be really tough sometimes! And during those times, attempting to put on a happy face or

repeat positive affirmations in your mind might seem at best inauthentic, and at worst, like a joke. As a metaphysician, part of my work is to help people take harder to grasp (or believe) concepts like the Law of Attraction, and make it relevant to them in their daily lives, so they can see it at work and KNOW that it’s at work. That last part–knowing that it’s at work can be especially challenging. That’s something I, myself, had to learn the hard way (click HERE to read that lesson). In my practice as a health and image coach, as well as in my own personal story, I’ve seen how important a positive mindset is if you truly want positive change to occur. I was not able to improve my own skin and selfimage, until I was able to control my thought processes, and convert them from negative to positive. It’s everything– because without it, the Law of Attraction will have the opposite effect. Instead of “like attracts like,” dislike will attract dislike.


How can the Law of Attraction work for you to help you get better skin? In the video below, I share a talk I recently gave at the 2nd Annual Diva Girl Philly Conference at the University of Pennsylvania. In this talk, I discuss a

bit of how the Law of Attraction works in general, but also how it can be used to help you have the beautiful skin – and self-image – that you want and deserve.

Three of the techniques I discuss are: Learn to “catch” negative thought processes, and convert them to something neutral and true. Next time you find yourself scrutinising your skin in front of the mirror, picking at blackheads, frowning at fine lines or dark spots, STOP. Take a deep breath, and tell yourself something that’s neutral and true. “I have brown hair.” “My shirt is blue.” It’s not negative, or positive – it’s just an observation that’s true.

Fake it ’til you believe it. In the video, I talk about how humans learn best by repetition, whether it’s something that’s true or not. Western society teaches women repeatedly that they are too old, too fat, too dark, too emotional, too intense, too much, and so on, ALL THE TIME. We see it in mass media, social media, advertising – we even see it starting with our children. How many times are things people believe about themselves actually true – and how many times are they only true within a false (and broken) societal construct? The more we repeat a behaviour, the more true it is. So, even if we adopt a “fake”

positive attitude, the more we think it, the sooner it will become truth. Use visualisation to retrain your brain. Did you know that the brain believes what you tell it to believe? It’s true – and it’s actually really cool, because by using tools like visualisation and affirmation, we can influence how the brain reacts to certain stimuli. Visualisation is a great tool – and it simply starts with using your imagination. In the video I teach you about my “Goddess You” visualisation, which is a tool I use almost every day– and it really helps me.

Step 1: Take a section of hair above your forehead and hold it up. Then tease your hair at the roots, about the width of two fingers up from the roots. Remember, the bigger the better, because you can always take some of the tease out, but it’s not easy to add more later on. Step 2: Tie the section of the top teased hair around the base with a rubber band and continue to tease the ponytail a bit more. Step 3: Swirl the ponytail into a bun and anchor the base of it throughout the bun with bobby pins. Step 4: Gently gather the rest of your hair into a bouffant or mid-low bun and secure it with bobby pins. I suggest you use the same colour bobby pins as your hair colour to disguise them. Step 5: Take a few strands at the hairline out to complete the look. Don’t forget to use hairspray!

A

few weeks back, I was at the Social Age Safari learning about all things social, change and leadership. In one of the breakout sessions, there was a call to talk about blogging - how do people start, what should they write about, that kind of thing. What got me is the perception that in writing thoughts through the medium of blogs, one could attract a backlash of responses. You know, people write something, a troll reads it and attacks them online for it. That kind of thing. I mean, we’re talking about HR. Or L&D. Or Recruitment. You know, fairly unimportant and innocuous topics for most people in their day-to-day lives. Mainly, people interact with these departments/teams when they have to. Beyond that, no one really cares about what’s happening in those teams. And

most people certainly don’t care all that much about what professionals in those spaces are talking about. But social media invites a different set of thinking. Suddenly, once you hit that publish button, your writing is out there for the world to read, to scrutinise, to criticise. Also, it’s out there to be praised, congratulated, and appreciated. What I’ve discovered over my time of blogging is that very little meets with anything close to trolling. At worst, I get personally challenged on a topic I might write. More regularly, people appreciate and support my writing (I know this to be true of others, so I’m not talking about one man’s view of the world.)

Nearly everything I read in the HR space is falls in the safe space of ‘innocuous’. There is very little writing that is truly contentious or challenges people’s belief systems. The Innocuity Of HR Blogging

We’re not writing about religion, politics, sexual orientation, gender biases, or anything which is likely to cause inordinate ire and trolling. In fact, most of what we write about is how to improve workplace practices in a number of ways. That’s always good and useful, and is hardly ever offensive. In fact, there are so few controversial writers in the HR space that I can count them on two fingers. I am known to sometimes write and be contentious. That’s not because I’m talking about something controversial; it’s because I choose to write about some topics in ways that are designed to provoke a reaction. I mean, seriously - when I’m writing about 70:20:10 or modern workplace learning and causing a reaction from people, it’s definitely not about the topic. So, this is to say, if you fancy writing, do it. Don’t let fear of the unknown stop

you. You’re probably gonna write about leadership, HR practice, L&D theory and practise, or something related. That’s such safe territory that I would willingly let my children read most of what I read about in this space. It is so innocuous that I would be happy for HR blogs to be posted on the walls of my children’s rooms just so they are exposed to writing. Most of what we write about is so niche and on topic that unless you work in the HR space, no one really gives a shit. (I’ve been blogging for about 7 years now, and I don’t think my wife has ever read one of my blog posts – I mean, I can’t express just how uninteresting it is to write in this space unless you’re a professional in this space.) Which does present a challenge in other ways to the writing that we do. People like Julie Drybrough write with such heart that I get swept up in her words and poetic style. People like Doug Shaw write about things in such open and accessible ways that I can


only appreciate him and what he does. People like David Goddin write about things which cut to the heart of the matter. People like David D’Souza write about pop culture and links to HR and I often laugh at what he writes. People like Joey Stephenson

write about their reflections and I’m moved to think with her and gain a better understanding of who she is as a person. People like Gemma Reucroft write about making the world of work better and not being a slave to the system. That’s where writing is special and lifts your thinking, lifts your attitude and can be supportive to you as a person.

I

hear and read about people looking to create real change in their lives. More than ever, there’s a feeling of restlessness, dissatisfaction and a desire for growth, purpose and passion. Unfortunately for many people, they get stuck and remain in the desire stage, not knowing how to cross to

the other side to their goals. The insatiable hunger remains, leaving a feeling of emptiness and frustration. If you have a big dream you want to reach, I want to share some great strategies to help you bridge the gap and get you on the road to achieving it.

Step 1 – Identify Your Starting Point Before you can move forward and achieve your goals, you need to take count of your starting point. This is about being clear on your current situation. So, if you want to make $250,000/year, first determine your current salary. How many clients do you currently serve and how many products do you currently sell?

If it’s a better relationship that you want, understand your current relationships. Do you have loving and supportive relationships (doesn’t have to be romantic)? Do you feel a balance of give and take or is it one-sided? Maybe it’s better health? What is your current weight and activity level? In order to get to where you want to go, you must first know your starting point.

Step 2 – Know Where You Want To Go This is a critical step. In order to create change and transformation, you need to know what that looks like for you. I’ve written and taught this many times. If you don’t know what the ideal scenario looks like, how do you expect to get there? Think through and determine what your definition of success looks like in all areas of your life. Some questions to ask are: ‘what does success look like for me? What would I be doing? Who would I be with and working with? How would I feel when my goals and dreams have been fulfilled?’ Get an answer and write them down.

Step 3 – Identify the Gap and Create a Plan Now that you’ve listed your starting point and where you want to go, identify the gap between the two. This exercise is not to make you feel bad for where you stand, nor is it intended to evoke fear and overwhelm of what you need to do to get there. What I want you to do is to look at the two situations and brainstorm as many ways as you can to get from point A (your current position) to point B (your goals). Do not limit yourself to ideas that you feel you can do. Write all the ways down and get them on paper.

You may need to do a little research on this on people who’ve achieved what you wish to achieve and see how they did it. 94

Step 4 – Execute and Take Action Now this part is often where it stops for most people, because it’s at this part that people will look at what they wrote down and let fear stop them. What I want you to remember is that action, no matter how small, done consistently and with faith, will lead you closer to your dreams. You can start with the small action steps and that momentum will propel you forward. Depending on the steps, you may need support. This is where coaches and mentors play an important role (and I would love to support you in this. Click here to learn how I can support you). Mentors and coaches are able to give you direction and bring to your consciousness things that you’re unable to see yourself because you’re too involved in the situation. They can help guide and support you in this crucial step.

Step 5 – Review and Repeat At this point, if the steps have been properly executed, you would have grown and reached your milestone. Like all humans, we’re meant to consistently grow, so you’ll have even more and bigger goals you’ll want to accomplish. This is why it’s so important to have fun along the way and enjoy the journey. When the desire of a new goal shows up, go back to step 1 and take inventory of all your current accomplishments and then on to step 2. Before you know it, you’ll have a solid formula to move you closer to any goal you want to accomplish.

Here’s the Cliff Notes: Your friends will influence how much food you eat – or don’t eat. In their interesting research study, two out of three friends were secretly told to restrict tempting foods while in the presence of a third friend.

This study kind of reminds me of that famous Jim Rohn quote – about how you become the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Our friends do influence a lot of our behaviours – consciously and subconsiously. With this in mind, Rohn’s quote could be expanded to say, “You become the same weight as the people you spend the most time with – because our friends influence how we think about food!”

here was a fascinating diet study done with the fun name of “Friends don’t let friends eat cookies.” This idea was explored by Mary Howland, Jeffrey Hunger and Traci Mann in the journal Appetite (2012).

The result? The third friend wound up restricting

There was also a recent second dieting study which reported how our friendships influence our eating habits. But in this case, the study was on overeating. Dr. Julie Exline, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University, found that folks who are “people pleasers” tend to be vulnerable to eating

more food – simply to make others feel comfortable- even if they aren’t hungry – and even if eating these foods make them feel uncomfortable.
