The festival is a spotlight moment, showcasing projects from communities across Kirklees, without whose passion – from knitting and crochet, yarn bomb and stitch groups, to schools, artists and workshop leaders, who come out to celebrate in force

– the festival would not be so vibrant and energetic.

Partnerships are also key to ensuring that WOVEN has a lasting impact. Our careers programme, working with The University of Huddersfield, Textile Centre of Excellence, EVOKE, and C+K Careers, has created an online resource, live industry tours, engaged in employability programmes, and has been a focus for a number of research programmes. With support from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Teacher Development Fund, WOVEN has enabled five primary schools to explore ways in which textiles can be embedded across the curriculum.

The themes for this year’s festival have developed from an urgent need to highlight the environmental impact of textiles on the planet, resulting in two core strands: Growing and Sewing.

Growing Colour Together

Over the last year we have been working hard to develop our understanding of natural dyes and the wonderful ways we can be creative and caring through dye processes. During the festival there are lots of opportunities to learn about everything from plant to pigment and get involved in the conversation. Growing Colour Together is supported by Arts Council England and the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund

Celebrating the Stitch will see us support local Stitch Heroes across the district with STRUTing upcycled and embellished outfits on a catwalk, our Mission to Mend Roadshows, Sing and Sew alongside HERD, community quilts, stitch socials, craftivism and everything in between!

Finally, don’t forget that so many of our programmed events are communityled, which this year includes an online and print map of all the community yarn bombing and colour gardens across Kirklees during the festival.

In 2021 we were all affected by COVID, and WOVEN took place, but with much uncertainty and precaution. We would like to acknowledge that COVID is still a large part of some people's lives, so please be accepting of anyone who is wearing a face mask or taking other precautions. We will also endeavour to bring as much of the festival to a wider audience through live content on the WOVEN social media channels, such as Facebook and Instagram. Please make sure you're following us @woveninkirklees

We hope that you all enjoy five weeks of amazing events, workshops, talks, tours, and performances!

Please visit the WOVEN website for the latest information: woveninkirklees.co.uk

Making It

A partnership between WOVEN, the Textile Centre of Excellence and community organisations across North Kirklees, including Pentland Junior and Infant School, Ravensthorpe Community Centre and Bretton Street Enterprise Centre.

The aim of the programme has been to support women from diverse cultural backgrounds to develop their sewing skills, so they can set up as freelance sole traders or take up employment within the textile industry.

Working in the area since 2019, WOVEN was approached by community group leaders who were impressed by the talent in their community, but frustrated by the lack of training and development opportunities to support women to take their talent to the next steps.

The programme has supported over 40 women with entry to employment sessions, delivering 58 hours of training in partnership with Works Better.

Stitch Heroes

Since 2019 WOVEN has worked with incredible textile and thread artists who have dedicated their training and career to developing their textile talents.

In 2023 we want to take time to celebrate all the amazing work these artists and crafts people have done for the festival, as well as identify the Stitch Heroes in the community, in industry, and in our heritage!

Anyone can nominate a Stitch Hero for WOVEN 2023! We want to hear about makers in the community who go out of their way to support others, for example:

• An aunty who tirelessly alters school uniforms.

• The wedding sewer whose wedding dress alterations save the dress and the day.

• Local tailors who have survived through the difficult times of off-the-shelf consumerism, and who are now leading the way in the ‘buy well, buy once’ campaign.

• An unsung hero with a military background, looking after their clothing and knowing a thing or two about repair.

To nominate a Stitch Hero, email us –woven@hatchprojects.org.uk – or send us a direct message on any of our social media channels.

GENERATIONS OF INNOVATORS

In 1766 the trade moved from its humble domestic spinning and weaving beginnings to large-scale mill production and trading in the purpose-built Cloth Hall designed by Sir John Ramsden. This established a worldwide reputation for the manufacture of fine woollen and worsted cloth, and Huddersfield’s status as a centre for the textile industry.

Despite organised protest, most notably by the Luddites who were completely opposed to the new machinery, the home workers had little option but to seek employment in the new mills; and by 1911 there were 22,000 people working in textiles in Huddersfield.

Kirklees' textile story also sees the innovative development of the shoddy and mungo techniques. Said to have been established in Batley, shredded unwanted woollen rags or industry waste were used to create new yarn which made blankets and uniforms for soldiers from the Napoleonic to the Second World War.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the industry saw increased workforce migration from Pakistan and India. Find out more about migration and the shoddy industry in the INTERWOVEN case study on our website.

The decline of Huddersfield’s textile industry began in the late 1960s and was largely due to increased competition and technical advances. Other countries invested in new, more efficient machines which required fewer workers to make cloth more quickly; mass-producing cheaper textiles, which were of inferior quality.

Today, Kirklees is reinventing itself as a centre for textile excellence; harnessing technology, innovation and progression through organisations such as the Textile Centre of Excellence and The University of Huddersfield’s Technical Textiles Research Centre, which aims to re-establish the town and region as a world leader in textiles through the newest technology and manufacturing techniques.

Kirklees is also nurturing the next generation, with textile courses at Kirklees College, a wide range of degrees at the University, and a thriving apprenticeship programme with the Textile Centre of Excellence.

Over the past few years, fabric made made in Kirklees has become more popular, as cultural shifts move towards the environmental focus of buying well and once, as well as seeing the resurgence of the robust and characterful worsted cloth needed for period drama TV shows, such as Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders. High-end is here to stay!

13 12
Kirklees is built on the textiles industry; from the undulating hills, which are perfect for grazing sheep for wool, to the plentiful supply of soft water from the Colne and Holme Rivers, which is essential for washing raw wool.

The WOVEN Careers

With a combination of short films, career talks, online content, attendance at Career Fairs and facilitation of textile tours locally, we have worked with over 20 schools and 20 textile businesses to bring textiles to life across the curriculum.

WOVEN Careers in 100 Seconds is a collection of 23 short films that showcase people working in different textile roles across Kirklees. The aim of the collection is to inform and inspire viewers with a 100 second snapshot of the breadth, creativity and importance of the local textiles sector. The collection includes careers information, pathways, day-to-day job requirements and top tips from those working in rug making, weaving, textile design, felt art, academia, embroidery, bespoke tailoring, sustainability, textile recycling, garment repair and more.

Textile Tours provide opportunities for young people, teachers and careers advisors to visit a variety of textile workplaces across Kirklees. Connecting young people and those working in education to the reality of the textiles industry is a valuable process that offers experiences of the workplace, sector based learning, and connections to build future opportunities.

This year's innovative textile careers event Textile Futures, builds on the WOVEN Careers Programme from 2021 to 2023, bringing industry and higher education together in one event. On Friday 7 July we’ll be joined by school and college groups from across West Yorkshire at the University of Huddersfield’s Barbara Hepworth Building and on Saturday 8 July we welcome young people and their families to join us.

Supported by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

CAREERS

CELEBRATING THE STITCH

We want to celebrate our wonderful stitchers!

WOVEN has been talking to communities across the district and we know there are hundreds of stitch groups out there doing amazing work bringing communities together, fighting isolation, sparking each other’s imaginations, befriending in times of need, helping each other get back into work, and even supporting others with language skills.

As we hit a crisis point in both the environmental impact of the fashion industry and the cost of living crisis, home sewing is becoming more and more urgent, with the ability to ‘make-do-andmend’ becoming essential.

This year we’re working with you to deliver an exciting programme of stitch, including:

STRUT: Fashion + Music + Identity

On 3 June, STRUT comes to Dewsbury. Get ready to see members of the local community strut their stuff and celebrate their individuality on this day of fashion, music and fun! See how embellished and upcycled fashions can showcase someone's unique style, plus create your own bespoke accessories, hear some amazing local music, and get your skates on at our skate park.

Study Day: Spotlight on the Textile Fabrics of India Archive

Chemical dyes became available during the Industrial Revolution, with ease of application and an unlimited palette making them appealing to industry and artisan alike. The downside was worker exposure to harmful chemicals, and pollution of water and the ground.

Over the past 12 months we've worked to expand our knowledge of natural dyes, the process of creating them, and how we can be sustainable whilst also being creative.

With support from Arts Council England

we have appointed seven artists to create three community dye hubs in Birkby and Fartown, Dewsbury, and Kirkburton. Each area has been establishing their own dye garden and working with the community to support hands-on, creative ways to use natural dye techniques. Each area will be holding its own event to showcase their growing and creative endeavours, along with a series of plant swaps, workshops, talks and tours.

In addition to the three hubs, we have supported community groups and schools with start-up funds to learn what to grow and when.

You can use the resources on our website to help you start your own dye garden and get involved with the Kirklees challenge to get everyone growing. During the festival there will be lots of ways to learn about everything from plants to pigment, and we hope everyone can come together during the festival to swap plants, ideas and creations!

If you have a dye garden (even if it's just starting to bloom) or you are an artist wanting to connect with other dye artists use the Growing Colour Together Network on our website to make connections.

GROWING COLOUR TOGETHER
As we discuss textiles and the environment in new ways, we cannot ignore natural dyes and the increased role natural dyeing plays in the future of the textile industry.

SING AND SEW

a disposable society, to repair is to

Thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, two amazing projects will take place this year as part of Sing and Sew across Kirklees – Mission to Mend and HERD. Mission to Mend is an exciting part of WOVEN's Celebrating the Stitch strand, which aims to address pressing issues for people and the planet, drawing inspiration from the rich textile heritage of the area.

'Make Do and Mend' was part of the Government's 1941 campaign urging people to repair, reuse and reimagine their existing clothes during Second World War rationing. Today it is just as important, with the imperative to keep clothing out of landfill and incineration. Waste is prevalent in every part of the fashion and textile industry, as a result of overproduction, overconsumption and problematic end-of-life solutions. The pressure is mounting on fashion brands and textile companies to lower their impacts on people, the planet, and animals. And we, as consumers and global citizens, also have an important role to play.

Mission to Mend is hosted across five locations – Golcar, Meltham, Mirfield, Holmfirth, and Heckmondwike. Each event is an opportunity to celebrate local textile talent from those working in the textile industry to our very own Stitch Heroes! Each area has been running a series of ‘creative repair’ hand sewing workshops to build up to their repair roadshow.

HERD is a major new project devised by composer Orlando Gough and produced by Artichoke as part of Kirklees Year of Music. It is a musical celebration of the industrial and cultural heritage of Kirklees, and features a flock of hand-crafted oversized musical sheep sculptures and hundreds of local participants.

Inspired by the formative history of the woollen trade and the people who came from all over to work in the textile mills, HERD knits together musical traditions and identities into a genre-defying community chorus and epic finale in St George’s Square, Huddersfield, on Sunday 16 July.

We

As consumers we have a responsibility to understand the impact of the clothes we wear, how we can do our bit to counter the damage, as well as how to change our shopping habits and care for our clothing.

• 20% of global wastewater comes from textile dyeing.

• Textile dyeing is the world's secondlargest polluter of water, as waste water from the dyeing process is often dumped into ditches, streams, or rivers.

• Wet processing factories, where materials are turned into fabrics through bleaching, printing, dyeing, finishing and laundering typically use 0.58 kg of chemical inputs for every 1 kg of fabric produced.

• Each year dyeing processes use enough water to fill 2 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.

• The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of all industrial water pollution worldwide.

• In the UK an estimated 350,000 tonnes of clothes end up in landfill every year.

• 40% of clothing purchased in some countries is never used.

EVENT

THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS & FUNDERS

WOVEN in Kirklees is funded by Kirklees Council but owned by everyone, so we would like to thank the Creative Development Team at Kirklees Council and everyone in Kirklees for their continued support, through the community-led events and activities, and by being a wonderful festival audience and such amazing volunteers. With special thanks to Thread Republic for their creative input and textiles know-how.

Find the Yarn Bombs and Colour Gardens Across Kirklees

WOVEN wouldn’t be what it is without the wonderful community of knitters and crocheters who celebrate every festival with the most wonderfully creative yarn bombs, which pop up across the district. Searching for all the amazing work at each festival has become an exciting regular feature, and this year you can find everything from knitted villages to post box toppers on a yarn bomb map, available on the WOVEN website and appearing in celebratory print soon.

WOVEN in Kirklees 2023 has been delivered by HATCH and team:

• Kathy Coates-Mohammed

• Emma Manners

• Alison McIntyre

• Louisa Parry

• Nicola Perrin

• Julia Roebuck

• Natalie Rudd

• Fran Smith

• Natalie Walton

• Kate Watson

Also appearing on the map, will be the colour gardens that have sprung up through the Growing Colour Together project. Growing Colour Together is more than a project, it’s a movement! And our ambition is to create a district-wide, natural-dye, colour garden. The gardens will be at all stages of their development, from those just starting out to more advanced gardens, and from allotments to planters. Not all the gardens are publicly accessible but we want to show just how many Growing Colour Together inspired gardens we have in Kirklees, in the hope that you too will be inspired to join this district-wide movement!
