That a memorable fine dining occasion calls for remarkable

matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it. That’s why Tom McNamara, Baan Rim Pa creator, almost 20 years ago decided to convert his two-storied teak house overlooking Kalim and Patong Bays, into a restaurant. Baan Rim Pa has since become one of Thailand’s best-known and most highly awarded restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff, with panoramic views of Patong Beach to the Bay of Kalim and the constant swish of the surf on the rocks below. It didn’t take long to decide on a meal, as we’d already studied the Baan Rim Pa cookbook that afternoon and had a fair idea of what we wanted to sample. However, the well-trained staff were there to assist with recommendations. We chose four plates: Goong Choob Paeng Thod (battered and deep-fried shrimp), Gaeng Liang Goong (herbed soup of vegetables and prawns), Panaeng Ped (creamy curry with duckling) and Pla Nueng Manow (steamed fish with lemon), with a bottle of Allegrini, Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 1999 from Baan Rim Pa’s award-winning wine cellar. Spotlights highlighted dancing branches next to our table, the atmosphere that brings thousands of diners each year was in full swing – and the food arrived. The Panaeng Ped deserves special mention. The duck, simmered in coconut milk, is sweet and just a touch piquant. The shrimps, plump, fresh and tender were served with Chinese plum sauce and a red chili dip. The herbed soup was perhaps outdone by the stronger flavours of the duck and prawn, and when the steamed fish arrived I found the meat fell off the bone and the lemon perfectly complemented the fish. There are some restaurants that can, for a fleeting moment, encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and then there are those that fling their tacky version of romance full in your face. Here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, The House by the Sea was the most romantic place I’d eaten in a long, long while. Winners of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence from 2002 to 2009, Baan Rim Pa delivers the definitive Phuket dining experience.

The newly-opened Mom Tri’s Boathouse Regatta boasts an original décor reminiscent of a New England style yacht club. Colourful flags and pennants, representative of signals used in yacht racing and regattas, arranged in circular ornaments, splendidly decorate the ceiling while portholes and other items symbolic of yachting appear on the white walls with a wooden floor painted gray to ‘bottom’ it all off. Comfortable rattan chairs and tables upon which elaborately set white tablecloths and settings provide inviting placings in the smart but casual al fresco dining area. Cocktails anyone? Enjoy one of the Boathouse Regatta’s exotic flavours on the boardwalk with a close-up view of a dream yacht. Superlative tastes and sights – a signature of all Mom Tri’s restaurants – manifest themselves in the form of a fusion of seafood and French Mediterranean cuisine at the Boathouse Regatta. From the ‘Warm Appetisers’ menu, the Rock Lobster Ravioli Boathouse Style with cream morel velouté and the French Duck Foie Gras ‘poêlé à la minute’ with cognac black truffle sauce and wild mushrooms were indicative of the subtle spices and art of preparation of this style of cooking. The complementary dishes of meat and seafood proved to be favourable and pleasing main courses. The Pan-Seared Fillet of Phuket Sole with fine cream Chardonnay sauce and layered with spinach was a light and refreshing dish of subtle flavours. The Striploin from Australia, beautifully cooked to medium-rare perfection, served with a creamy Roquefort sauce and gratin Dauphinois, was an equal match to the seafood entrée. A Californian Zinfadel and the desserts of Chocolate Banana Pie and vanilla ice cream and Mango Crêpes added to the succulent sweet and zest appeal of the evening. A cuisine supplied tried and true from Mom Tri’s Boathouse in addition to a model setting make for a memorable evening out. Hold your next regatta on the Boardwalk!

The Tom Yam Goong, a sour and spicy prawn soup with lemongrass, mushrooms, galangal and herbs and the Som Tam Tod, a modified version of the Thai Papaya Salad with deep fried shredded vegetables and shrimp, are two Thai favourites providing a graceful ease into the superb meal. Complemented by the red wine El Supremo Syrah from Argentina, the courses to come, beckon. The international and fusion flare at BYD come alive in the dishes so delicately prepared and presented. The Nasi Goreng Kampong, the Indonesian style fried rice served with chicken satay and shrimp crackers, topped with a fried egg is a refreshing dish particularly for those familiar with the Thai Khao Pat or fried rice with its different spices and sauce. BYD’s Salmon Steak, glazed with plum sauce and served with cauliflower mousse and wok-fried Bok Choy in soya sauce served with mint and Thai basil is a medley of tantalizing flavours served over a moist and perfectly cooked salmon. A signature dish not to be missed is the KO’s spicy sautéed pasta, a choice of pasta with asparagus, olives, Thai basil pesto sauce, peppers, dry chilli with seafood or chicken. Sweet treats are a distinctive roundup to a wonderful meal and enhance the timeless quality of the evening. The Chocolate Fondant, a hot chocolate cake with a melting chocolate centre, is a decadent dessert and tasteful treat. Pull up a stool at the bar for more lively conversations and good cheer. The chef concocts an array of Western and Thai cuisine complemented by a fantastic selection of beers and wines. JP’s features a wide choice of international cuisine that is regularly updated. It’s as if their kitchen has traveled around the world from Europe to Australia to Asia then America! The Large Grilled Prawn with two truffle-based sauces was one of the first of the chef’s delicacies to be savoured. The mushroom condiments were a surprising complement to the prawn with a hint of mint in one offering a unique touch. The Tuna Fillet with spinach ravioli in a Parmesan walnut sauce not only paired different textures and taste combinations but was also a pleasing dish to the eye. Further joys and delights arrived with the entrées. The Rack of Lamb and Rib Eye Steak on a bed of mushrooms were both cooked to medium-rare perfection. A selection of Thai green vegetables and potatoes gratin dauphinois were ideal partners. An Italian wine, Umani Ronchi, Montepulciano D’Abruzzo 2005, proved to be a smooth and easy red that ideally complemented the seafood and meat dishes. A stylish and upscale setting with exquisite food and a warm ambience, make Jean Pierre Bar & Restaurant a place to go to get a taste of that something special.

La Boucherie is a French steakhouse located in the newly built Royal Phawadee Village – a sumptuous and quiet boutique resort in Patong. An intimate and relaxed ambience alongside great steaks and French specialities characterise this restaurant, offering a welcoming escape from the nearby busy and bustling area. Unwind with a glass of wine at an outdoor table in front of the restaurant or in air-conditioned comfort inside and enjoy some superb food.

Sitting at a round table offers a casual and open atmosphere and an ideal opportunity to sample some of the house specialities. Our ‘menu séduction’ or what proved to be a tantalizing fare for the evening, began with a trio of appetizers consisting of avocado with crab meat in pomello butter, a tatin of tomato mozzarella, with a basil and balsamic caramel sauce and a tartare of red tuna with sour cream. Artistic in their presentation and magnificent in their flavour combinations, these dishes offered an insight into the chef’s culinary expertise and artistic ability. Similarily, the main courses of crisp red tuna wrapped in bacon in a red pepper cream and Thai vegetables, rack of lamb in nougatine with carrot and mint purée and the shrimp skewers soaked with lemon and vegetables also yielded eye opening sight and taste delights. Wines and desserts offer special complements to a meal. A white and a red from TerraMater wines from Chile proved to be a perfect accompaniment to our fine French fête, an incredible feast that was followed by a sweet procession of a sushi of fresh tropical fruits and a strawberry sundae, Mae Naam style.

Where to Eat in Phuket

Wine is a natural accompaniment to a meal and French wine is often a favourite. We enjoyed a Château Vieux Coudard, Côtes de Bourg AOC, 2003, a Cabernet Sauvignon that proved to be a wonderful complement to our appetizers and main course. The evening fare began with appetizers of a Beef Carpaccio and Basil and Warm Goat Cheese Salad – delightful delicacies of a perfect combination of meat and cheese with complimentary textures and delicately spiced tastes. These were followed by two specialty dishes of the house, a Steak Tartare served with pommes forestières or fried potatoes with garlic and butter and vegetables and an Entrecôte with a Bearnaise sauce and a baked potato and vegetables. Delicious entrées and accompaniments! Great beginnings have great endings and they are generally tasty delights that leave you craving for more. Dessert provided some wonderful treats consisting of a Tiramisu and a Crème Brulée, which were sweet fixings that provided a wonderful topping to the meal.

Mae Naam offers an exceptional and unprecedented dining experience with fine French cuisine served in an elaborate setting yet in a relaxed atmosphere with friendly service. A restaurant to discover with an evening to savour for both tourists and residents alike! Bon appetit.

A varied menu of a mix of wonderful and reasonably-priced food that includes perfectly cooked steaks and dishes from France is a good reason to stop at La Boucherie and enjoy the dishes available. The people behind the Two Chefs concept, Billy and Hendrik, have produced several dining venues in Phuket. Their third and newly opened location in Kata Center, under the management of ‘third chef’ Krister, exemplifies this notion of fine dining. A warm ambience and refinement pervade the open aired and alfresco eating areas including the open rooftop bar and seating area on the second floor. International cuisine with strong underlying tones of a Scandinavian influence and Thai food are exquisite to the eye and even more to the taste. A medley of starters that include Toast Skagen with prawns, dill, chili and mayonnaise, Homemade Pepper Smoked Norwegian Salmon with rosepepper crème, roasted chiabatta and salad, Tzatzki and Garlic Bread provided delighful tastes and texture combinations. Accompanied by a glass of white wine, the appetizers offered an insight into the delights that were yet to come. From the selection of wines, our host Krister recommended an Australian red, a Hardy Cabernet Shivaz, for the main course. What a superb choice that complemented the Pork File ala tzatzki with herb gravy, roasted vegetables served with baked potato and the Pepper Steak, Two Chefs most famous steak served with creamy brandy flavoured pepper sauce, baked tomato sautéed vegetables and potato gratin! The dishes were incomparable – perfectly cooked and topped with savoury sauces and served with side dishes. A sampling of the marvelous desserts served at Two Chefs continued to provide further enjoyment. A blueberry cheesecake, a brownie and an apple crumble served amidst creams and glazes was a perfect top off to the meal. Expect magnificent food, excellent service and friendly hospitality in a warm ambience. Two Chefs offers an ideal opportunity to enjoy and savour a memorable evening out.

Concaved Beach Restaurant is such an intriguing place to go. With a name that is derived from the fact that it is located right in the middle of Patong Beach, this restaurant boasts sweeping views of the beach and bay and serves special cocktails of which the Patong New Wave and the Phuket Blue Sky come highly recommended as well as French, Thai and international food. Seafood can be ordered from the Savoey, a popular Patong restaurant that is also part of the Safari Beach Hotel. A Seafood Salad was an appropriate start to our meal. A mixture of clams, mussels, scallops and prawns came to our table as an elegant display that was nestled on a bed of lettuce, carrots, red cabbage and diced peppers. A light and refreshing appetizer ideal also as a lunch. With cold beers in hand, this was the perfect way to enjoy the ambiance and settle into a relaxing evening. A specialty of the restaurant’s French chef – Pork Medallions in a mushroom sauce – was the entrée of the evening. Tender yet thick slices of pork were accompanied by potato gratin dauphinois and a medley of fried vegetables. Other dishes appeared as equally tempting: a Grilled White Snapper with a zuccini top and red pepper sauce and a Duck Breast served with potato cheese cream and cepes. Dessert was a sweet delight with a creamy topping, a Mocca Cake with Cioccolato, which is baked in Beachway, a bakery that is also part of the Safari Beach Hotel group. A decadent treat to finish the meal!

Sala Bua There are only a certain few select restaurants that can offer an evening of enjoyment with unsurpassed sophistication. A superb cuisine prepared by an award-winning chef, along with warm hospitality in a luxurious but relaxing ambiance, set the stage for an ideal and memorable evening out. With a seating of al fresco and outdoor dining by the sea, and the soft sounds of the musicians, the setting for the discerning diner or those seeking a romantic interlude, is complete. Sala Bua at the boutique hotel, Impiana Phuket Cabana, is such a venue. A stunning view of the Andaman Sea, white tablecloths on the sand and inside define the elegance of this beachfront place to dine. An array of culinary delights prepared by Executive Chef Ronnie Macuja who steered Sala Bua into winning a coveted ‘Best Restaurant’ award granted by Thailand Tatler from 2002 to 2009, lay testimony to the chef’s passion with his work. The unique evening began with the Marinated Lamb Chops with tomato-mint gremolata, young spinach and the White Lettuce Salad with bacon, croutons, parmesan shavings and Caesar dressing. The flavour of the lamb chops was wellenhanced with the subtly spiced tomato-based sauce. This was followed by a Froth of Mushroom and Scallop “Cappuccino” and a Schnapps of Raspberry – jubilant tastes, in an Espresso cup and a shot glass! The entrées of the Open Lasagna of Rock Lobster with white truffle mash potato and new season garlic cream and Hoisin Roasted Duck Breast with maple-glazed pears, charred asparagus and cherry-grappa sauce further injected the feeling of heavenly bliss into the experience. These dishes were inspiring in their concepts, presentations, and savoury tastes. Fine wines and delectable desserts are ‘must’ accompaniments to a refined dining occasion. The Australian red, The Little Penguin, proved to be a perfect match to the evening’s dishes. The Carmelized Mango Cream, Kaffir Lime Curd and Mango Sorbet was an array of sweet and refreshing delights to the meal. Sala Bua offers the ultimate in elegant dining providing cuisine that is innovative and unparalleled. With a warm ambience and service, this place to dine provides an extraordinary and unforgettable evening out.

Da Vinci Mama Mia! Conceptualisations and ingenuity in the form of Italian cuisine come to Nai Harn! Relish an authentic style of cooking of a diverse array of favourites and new combinations served in a cozy ambiance or savour pizzas in a separate casual seating area by a woodfired oven. Good beginnings to an evening meal start with an aperitif! A Campari and soda and a gin and tonic offered the opportunity to take in and relish the open aired-surroundings of Da Vinci of wooden seating outside and subtle lighting including chandeliers highlighting the rattan furniture and walls tastefully decorated with paintings. The children’s play area is a welcoming aspect for parents who can enjoy a relaxing meal while keeping their kids in sight. Welcoming tastes and sights abound at Da Vinci with tantalizing temptations served from the kitchen with fresh ingredients as signature items in every dish. Our first adventure into this all-important notion was the antipasti of Bruschetta, grilled sliced bread with chopped tomato, garlic and olives. Refreshing and with pleasing seasonings, it was followed by the primi piatti course of a trio of pastas. The Lasagne Al Forno, home made lasagne layers of pasta made with beef and tomato sauce, the Spaghetti Gamberi Zucchine Vodka, spaghetti with prawns, zucchini and vodka and the Spaghetti Neri Pomodorini Calamari E/ Gamberi, black spaghetti with tomato, squid and prawn, offered unique tastes and texture combinations with the richness of their flavours reflected in the quality of the ingredients. Good wine is also a highlight of a meal. The Palazzo Della Torre Veronese Indicazione Geografica Tipica 2004, Allegrini was an ideal red to complement the first two courses and continued to match the secondi piatti and pizze courses, the Scaloppine Al Vino Bianco Con Patate. These two appetizing escalopes with white wine served with potatoes were perfectly cooked fillets of pork. Pizza is also a must traditional Italian fare and the Al Proscuitto Crudo, tomato Mozzarella cheese and Parma ham is one not to be missed! The Semifreddo All Arancio and the Semifreddo All Amaretto were the indulging cap to the meal. This dolci course consisted of delightful home made orange and amaretto sherberts. For superlative Italian cuisine with the freshest of ingredients, be sure to try Da Vinci and discover a renaissance of food.

The Toast Skagen, prawns and dill mayonnaise served on crispy toast, are a refreshing start to a meal. The Mexican Spring Rolls with taco beef and jalapenos cheese is an enjoyable twist on an Asian classic and the French Onion Soup, a Western favourite, more than pleases the taste. Several of the main courses are a must try. Superb in their presentation and mouthwatering to the taste buds, the Planked Steak, the Planked Salmon and the Ribs are more than worth the visit. The beef tenderloin with bearnaise sauce, pommes duchess that was served on an oakwood plank was perfectly cooked as was the salmon fried in lemon with mashed potato and hollandaise sauce. And the ribs? Well, the meat that falls off the bone and Harrys’ special sauce is a secret that diners would dearly like to find out! A good wine and desserts are true complements to any meal. The Alma de Chile, a Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2007, was a superb choice to accompany the various dishes. The Chocolate Mousse with whipping cream and the Apple Pie with homemade custard and vanilla ice cream – sweet and indulgent – top the meal off nicely. Harrys delivers good food and service in a homey and comfortable atmosphere. It’s no wonder that people keep coming back!

MoMo Café ‘Modern Living Modern Eating’ – a slogan and concept that becomes an abbreviated version of the name of a restaurant that embraces the notion of quality cuisine using the freshest of ingredients and is set in a modern contemporary environment. And this place to dine is kid friendly! Yes, kids can have a meal to their liking from their own menu and then enjoy themselves at the Kids World. Comfortable couches and tables and chairs amid soft lighting set the scene for a relaxing meal at this chic air conditioned restaurant in the Courtyard by Marriott at Patong. Tastefully decorated, this place to dine features an open kitchen where the curious can see the preparation of the selection of International and Asian dishes. Executive Chef Anusorn Janthamanee suggested an ensemble of starters and entrées that displayed not only the tastes and textures of the food but also the creativity of the dishes and their presentation. The Kao Soi Gai, the Chiang Mai Noodle Curry with Chicken was an exquisite delight of sweet curry with noodles and toppings as was the Smoked Chicken and Mango Vietnamese Roll with spicy lime dipping sauce. The Pot Sticker Dumplings, which were pan-fried and filled with chives, pork and served with spicy soya dipping sauce and the Garlic Prawns in Cream Sauce served with herb bread were also a welcome and pleasing medley of sensations. The pizza was the Prosciutto Crudo of tomato sauce, Mozzarella cheese and mushrooms and with shaved prosciutto and Rocket leaves. A Western fare was the preference for the main course with the Rotisserie 1/2 Chicken coated with spicy MoMo sauce with chips and Rocket salad and the Wood Roasted Rosemary Lamb Rack with zuchini, eggplant ragout and roasted potatoes being the recommended selection. Once again, deliciously spiced and well-presented dishes continued the enjoyment of the meal. Wines and desserts are true complements to a meal. The white Australian Long Flat, Semillion-Sauvignon Blanc, 2006 and the red Australian The Little Penguin Cabernet, 2005, which won the Best Buy Wine Spectator Award, were ideal ‘wines by the glass’ for the meal. And to top things off, an apple pie and the Mövenpick ice cream Maple Walnut, were ideal sweet treats. For a first-rate meal of some favourite International dishes and tantalizing foods from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and the ‘MoMo Regional Cuisine’ (delights from Thailand) try MoMo Café. Couples and families will be happy they did!
