Foreword

Haus der Kunst is privileged to present Ivan Kožarić. Freedom Is a Rare Bird, a landmark exhibition that represents the museum’s interest to present robust examinations of some of the most significant, but little known artistic figures whose works have contributed to a broad reappraisal of important features in the history of contemporary art. Organized by Patrizia Dander at Haus der Kunst, in consultation with Radmila Iva Janković, curator, Atelijer Kožarić [Kožarić Studio], at the Muzej suvremene umjetnosti [Museum of Contemporary Art], Zagreb this retrospective is the most ambitious and comprehensive exhibition of the work of the pioneering artist Ivan Kožarić ever to be mounted outside Croatia. A member of the ex-Yugoslavia avant-garde of the late 1950s and 1960s, Kožarić is a crucial figure among a generation of artists from this region, who after the Second World War formulated a conceptual and formalist language that sought the overthrow of old hierarchies of normative modernism, while questioning the doctrinary artistic models that arose in the wake of the Cold War era. An independent thinker, who is not averse to striking his own individual stance against the conformity of group dynamics and politics, at ninety-two Kožarić remains one of the most admired, fascinating, and unclassifiable artists to emerge from ex-Yugoslavia. Taking a distance from the dominant ideological and artistic positions of Socialist Realism and Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, he sought a language of expression that examined the uniqueness of the historical experience of ex-Yugoslavia alongside that of its contentious nationalist traditions, a process that also explored the tension contained inside the divisions between East and West, Communism and Socialism. Within all these, and the confusing ideological tendencies that muted innovation in the work of artists, Kožarić nevertheless maintained a visceral connection to an artistic heritage in Croatia that predated modern-

6

ism while pointing his compass to the future. Taking an independent position from prevailing theoretical models he transformed his entire studio into an arena for formal experimentation and conceptual reorientation. The result is an irreverent practice characterized by a type of radical heterogeneity in which no formal style or media assumed priority over the other. In his work the boundaries between diverse artistic styles and disciplines are blurred. This openness and resistance to creative closure embodied neither a total liquidation of figuration nor a studious devotion to abstraction. The resultant artistic imperative is a body of searching and analytical work that gives equal consideration to the conceptual and formal, the gestural and performative, the sacred and profane, high and low, the playful and mordant. In Ivan Kožarić. Freedom Is a Rare Bird Patrizia Dander has mined the imaginative richness and stimulating nest of ideas contained in Kožarić’s œuvre of more than sixty years to present a vivid and evocative account of the artist’s work that shows him working to slip the constraints of all esthetic certitudes. In this exhibition, Patrizia Dander outlines the importance of new curatorial and art historical research such as she has embarked on with the support and cooperation of our partner museum in Zagreb. The dynamic process of curatorial inquiry and appraisal that resulted in this exhibition, which in turn opened up fresh ground of thinking and historical analysis, while pointing us to new information, and enlivening our appreciation of Kožarić’s achievement, would not have been possible without the commitment of Snježana Pintarić, director of the Muzej suvremene umjetnosti [Museum of Contemporary Art], Zagreb and her staff. We owe a debt of gratitude to the City of Zagreb, owner of the Atelijer Kožarić [Kožarić Studio], and to Ms. Pintarić for not only agreeing to work with Haus der

Kunst on this important project, but also for enthusiastically supporting its realization with extensive loans from the museum’s collection. We also thank other institutional as well as private lenders for coming through with crucial loans. For this we acknowledge Arijana Kralj and Lida Roje-Depolo at Gliptoteka Zagreb, Margherita Hephzibah Druml at Kontakt. The Art Collection of Erste Group and ERSTE Foundation Vienna, Bart De Baere at M HKA Antwerp, Zdenka Badovinac and Bojana Piškur at Moderna galerija Ljubljana, Biserka Rauter Plančić at Moderna galerija Zagreb, Nataša Ivančević at Muzej suvremene umjetnosti Zagreb, Vlatka Filipčić-Maligec at Muzeji Hrvatskog zagorja Gornja Stubica, as well as Monika Branicka at Zak Branicka Gallery Berlin. In addition we are grateful to Božo Biškupić, Vladimir Macura, Dušan Mandič, Tomislav and Željka Pernar, Goran Prkačin, Marinko Sudac, Goran Trbuljak, Ivica Župan, as well as Vanja Žanko at Filip Trade Collection / Lauba House for agreeing to lend works from the collections. Over the years, museums and art history have been lively grounds for ongoing critical reappraisals that have alerted the public and scholars alike to the diverse histories of art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It is through this process of reappraisal and recontextualization that the art of many innovative artists such as Ivan Kožarić has come to light and be fully appreciated. At the museum in Zagreb, Radmila Iva Janković offered critical support and detailed knowledge of Kožarić’s work that aided the completion of the exhibition. In this capacity, she has written an incisive essay that contributes to the further understanding of the artist’s work. We are grateful to her for according us her expertise throughout the course of the planning. Many people have contributed and supported the project in innumerable ways: we wish to register our appreciation to Marco Scotini for his vivid essay in the catalog, and to Bart De Baere, Ješa Denegri, Antun Maračić, Zdenko Rus, Ivica Župan, and the administrators of Davor

Matičević, and Radoslav Putar writings for granting us permission to republish their texts on Kožarić’s work. In this regard, we acknowledge the superb work of the translators Helen Ferguson, Nicola Janelli Popham, and Andy Jelčić who have provided crucial translations of the texts from various languages; the copy editor Uta Hoffmann, and the catalog designer Sabine Pflitsch. At Haus der Kunst, Patrizia Dander oversaw the organization of the entire project and was assisted by curatorial intern Jelena Lozo, and ably supported by Tina Koehler, head of exhibition planning and production, and members of her staff, in particular Cassandre Schmid. Patrizia deserves the appreciation of the museum and our thanks for her superb work in helping elucidate and illuminate the complex career of Ivan Kožarić. Engaging and understanding Kožarić’s practice would not have been possible without the personal contact with the artist. For this we acknowledge Filip Kožarić and the Kožarić family for serving as crucial conduits for the communication with him. Above all we thank and salute Ivan Kožarić to agreeing for his work to be the subject of this exhibition. Okwui Enwezor Director Haus der Kunst
