Dear Friends, We were delighted when Tessa Jowell and Frances D’Souza’s The Power of Politicians won a Parliamentary Book Award in December. If our 2019 books don’t always show the best of what politicians have to offer, there’s plenty to provide entertaining distraction from the Brexit debacle unfolding in Westminster. It has always seemed slightly incongruous that the home of the British Prime Minister and the centre of government should be a nondescript-looking terraced house. As the first Researcher in Residence at 10 Downing Street, Jack Brown has written a fascinating study of the building and the Prime Ministers who’ve called it home. In the twilight of their careers, the political heavyweights interviewed in Reflections are free to speak without the constraints imposed by high office. With an honesty we don’t always associate with the political class, Peter Hennessy and Robert Shepherd’s book is peppered with moments of unexpected now-it-can-be-told revelation. As the centenary of the League of Nations approaches, and with a reemergent bilateralism destabilising the international order, Ruth Henig’s brilliant concise history of that ill-fated, pioneering organisation couldn’t be more timely. The Peace That Never Was is a celebration of the League’s few underappreciated successes and a lament for its ultimate failure. With a little over six hundred miles between them, and occupying positions of immense historic and strategic importance, the islands of Crete and Sicily have much in common. Chris Moorey’s masterly A History of Crete is the first complete narrative history of the island to be published in English for twenty years. Meanwhile, Alejandro Luque’s charming and poetic quest to trace Jorge Luis Borges’s journey across Sicily is aided by the photographs of the Sicilian native Ferdinando Scianna. Later in the year I would draw your attention to Alaa Al Aswany’s The Dictatorship Syndrome. In this provocative and thought-provoking short work of political philosophy, the internationally bestselling author of The Yacoubian Building asks how and why certain societies are susceptible to dictatorship and how dictators themselves survive, and even thrive, when loathed and ridiculed by their people. NO. 10 The Geography of Power at Downing Street

Jack Brown £18.99 | POLITICS, HISTORY HBK, ROYAL JUNE 2019 978-1-912208-01-2 240pp | ILLUSTRATED

An enlightening history of the building at the heart of British politics With perhaps the world’s most iconic front door, 10 Downing Street is the home and office of the British Prime Minister and the heart of British politics. This is the story of the intimately entwined relationship between the house and its post-war residents. What does each occupant’s use and modification of the building reveal about their values and how they sought to govern? No. 10 was designed in the late seventeenth century and intended only as a place of residence. Over the years it has undergone constant adaptation to accommodate the changing role and requirements of the premiership. As No. 10’s firstever Researcher in Residence, Jack Brown had unprecedented access to people and papers. No. 10: The Geography of Power at Downing Street sheds new light on unexplored corners of Prime Ministers’ lives. Equally fascinating and revealing, this is an intimate account of the building at the core of British political power. Jack Brown is London Partnerships Director and Lecturer in London Studies at King’s College London, and Senior Researcher at the Centre for London.

PHANTOM ISLANDS In Search of Mythical Lands

Dirk Liesemer Translated by Peter Lewis ÂŁ14.99 | TRAVEL, ADVENTURE HBK, 156 x 234 Portrait MAY 2019 978-1-912208-32-6 180pp | ILLUSTRATED

Tales of myth, mystery, and deceit in the quest for fabled islands From famed Atlantis to little-known Rupes Nigra, mythical islands have long been objects of curiosity and fascination. Isolated from ordinary life they lurk, full of mystery, in unexplored corners of the globe and in far-off seas. At times, however, our fascination has bled into reality; our willingness to see what isn’t really there has led to fictional islands appearing on maps and charts, with travelogues telling tales of their inhabitants, their natural wonders, or their treasure. Phantom Islands is the story of thirty such islands. Beginning with their alleged discovery, Liesemer artfully recreates their fabled landscapes, the voyages attempted to verify their existence, and ultimately the moments when that existence was finally disproved. Spanning oceans and centuries, these curious tales are a chronicle of the human lust for discovery and wealth. Beautifully illustrated with coloured maps and charts, the book captures the earnestness of explorers searching for knowledge and the pleasure that can be found in our willingness to deceive and to be deceived. Dirk Liesemer worked as a newspaper editor in Berlin and Munich. He currently works as a freelance journalist.

A HISTORY OF CRETE

Chris Moorey

£17.99 | TRAVEL, HISTORY HBK, ROYAL FEBRUARY 2019 978-1-912208-53-1 312pp | ILLUSTRATED

An engaging and lively account of the island from the Stone Age to the present day Known by the Greeks as ‘Megalónisos’, the ‘Great Island’, Crete has been of paramount strategic importance for thousands of years thanks to its location close to the junction of three continents and the heart of the eastern Mediterranean. The island has been ruled for much of its history by foreign invaders – Mycenaeans, Dorians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Ottoman Turks and, briefly, the Third Reich – and thus much of its past has revolved around how the Cretans themselves, fierce lovers of freedom, have interacted with their conquerors and the influence of foreign rule on their culture. Two periods at either end of these three thousand years of domination form an intriguing contrast: the dazzling apogee of the Minoan civilisation and the brief period of autonomy before union with Greece at the beginning of the twentieth century. Moorey has written an engaging and lively account of Crete from the Stone Age to the present day.

Chris Moorey is a writer and historian. The author of A Glimpse of Heaven, he has lived in Crete for over twenty years.

FICTION, FACT AND FUTURE An Insight into EU Democracy

James Elles £7.99 | POLITICS, CURRENT AFFAIRS PBK, A-FORMAT MAY 2019 978-1-912208-63-0 90pp HAUS CURIOSITIES SERIES

Is the EU as undemocratic as Leavers want to make out? This short book sorts fact from fiction Misrepresented by the British media and misunderstood by the public, the EU has grown since its inception to become an open system that provides democratic accountability to more than five hundred million European citizens. James Elles examines how democracy in the EU is likely to develop over the decade ahead and how the European Parliament will continue to emerge as a platform for the voice of the European people. Taking in the history of Britain’s relationship with the EU from our ascension in 1973, Elles delves into the ways in which the disinterest of our political leaders and hostility in the press allowed untruths about the EU to take hold. The result was an electorate with a woeful understanding of the EU’s institutions and the work of MEPs. Fiction, Fact and Future is a guide to what Britain got wrong about the EU, and what the British can expect to see from the EU if they’re to watch from the sidelines in the years ahead. James Elles was a British Conservative Member of the European Parliament from 1984 to 2014. He is the Co-founder of the European Internet Forum and the Founder and Chairman of the Transatlantic Policy Network.

THE PEACE THAT NEVER WAS A History of the League of Nations Revised and updated Second Edition

Ruth Henig £11.99 | HISTORY, INT. POLITICS PBK, B-FORMAT FEBRUARY 2019 978-1-910376-78-2 224pp | MAPS Previously published as: The League of Nations

An essential account of the history of the world’s first truly international organisation as it approaches its centenary Almost a century ago, in the aftermath of the carnage of the First World War, the League of Nations convened for the first time with the intention that it should seek to settle disputes between nations using diplomacy instead of war. This concise history examines how the League was envisaged, the multifaceted body that emerged, how it was used in the ensuing years to counter territorial ambitions and restrict armaments, and its role in the development of human rights. The failure of the League to prevent the Second World War would lead to its dissolution and the subsequent creation of the UN. In this accessible history of the League, Ruth Henig asks whether the UN’s fate can be ascertained by reading the history of its predecessor. This is essential reading for those interested in international twentiethcentury history, the First World War, and the development of global policy and government. Ruth Henig, CBE, is a historian and Labour Party politician. She served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities from 1997 to 2000. Specialising in twentieth-century international history, she has written on the origins of the First and Second World Wars, the Treaty of Versailles, and international diplomacy in the 1920s. ................ THE STATESMAN AND THE TRAMP A Novel

Michael Köhlmeier

Translated by Ruth Martin £9.99 | FICTION PBK, B-FORMAT MARCH 2019 978-1-912208-31-9 260pp Previously published as: Two Gentlemen on the Beach

‘A masterful novel’ –Die Welt ‘A beautiful, intelligent and poignant novel’ –Shiny New Books Though both icons of the twentieth century, at first glance Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin couldn’t be more different: one the grand statesman whose resolve led a nation in the struggle against Nazi Germany, the other the comedian who famously parodied Hitler in The Great Dictator. But they shared a dark secret. This novel imagines the bonds that form between the two men from their shared struggle against depression. When a chance encounter leads to a series of therapeutic meetings, Churchill and Chaplin are prompted to share their methods for coping with their ‘black dog days’. A masterfully subtle narrator, Köhlmeier imagines an unexpected friendship between this extraordinary pair, spanning art and politics, humour and seriousness. The Statesman and the Tramp reveals the intimacy that can arise when different men are locked in a common struggle. Michael Köhlmeier is an Austrian writer and musician. His works of fiction have met with considerable critical acclaim and his many awards include the Manès Sperber Prize for Literature and the Grimmelshausen Prize. Author of: Yiza (2017) 9

BORGES IN SICILY Journey with a Blind Guide

Alejandro Luque Translated by Andrew Edwards £10.99 | TRAVEL, MEMOIR PBK WITH FLAPS, B-FORMAT MAY 2019 978-1-909961-62-3 220pp | ILLUSTRATED Imprint: Armchair Traveller

Includes twenty-five photographs of Borges by the renowned Sicilian photographer Ferdinando Scianna When Alejandro Luque receives a book of photographs of the Argentinian writer, essayist, and poet Jorge Luis Borges, taken in Sicily, he decides to trace the writer’s journey, setting off with a group of friends on his own Sicilian odyssey. Meticulously identifying the location of each photograph, Luque uses the pictures of Borges to imagine how the elderly writer felt when faced with the same views, the same stresses or delights. As his hunt for the locations of the original photographs continues, he begins to fall in love with both the island and his friend, Ro. The literati of the past and present, both indigenous and foreign, feature alongside Luque’s own observations in a narrative that is rich with historical detail. Borges himself becomes a character as the narrative is infused with extracts and reflections from his essays and poetry. Alejandro Luque writes on culture for the Spanish newspaper El Correo de Andalucía, and is the former cultural correspondent for the national paper El País. He has published seven books in Spanish, including a winner of the 1st International Travel Book Prize. Ferdinando Scianna is a photographer from Magnum Photos and a native of the Sicilian town of Bagheria. ................ NEW IN PAPERBACK

RILKE'S VENICE Birgit Haustedt Translated by Stephen Brown £9.99 | TRAVEL, LITERATURE PBK WITH FLAPS, B-FORMAT JUNE 2019 978-1-909961-63-0 187pp | ILLUSTRATED Imprint: Armchair Traveller

One of the twentieth century’s most widely read poets walks through the city that inspired him ‘We discover a lot about both the city and the poet... knowledgeably written...’ –Die Zeit Travel was a way of life for the Austrian poet and novelist Rainer Maria Rilke, and it was integral to his work. Between 1897 and 1920 he visited Venice ten times. The city has inspired countless writers and artists, but Rilke was both enthralled and provoked by it, as eager to see and explore the city’s deserted shipyards and back alleys as the iconic sights of St Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace. Staying in simple guesthouses or the grand palaces of his patrons, Rilke would walk prodigiously. His contemporary Stefan Zweig commented that ‘knowing every last corner and depth of the city was his passion’ and Rilke himself said his walking allowed him to ‘grasp the whole breadth of the city’. In eleven walks Birgit Haustedt guides readers through Venice in the poet’s footsteps, showing us well-known sights though Rilke’s eyes so that we might see them anew. Birgit Haustedt taught German Literature at the University of Salerno and works as a freelance writer in Hamburg. She is the author of several books on Italian and German cities.

THE DICTATORSHIP SYNDROME Alaa Al Aswany Translated by Russell Harris ÂŁ12.99 | POLITICS HBK, TRADE SEPTEMBER 2019 978-1-912208-59-3 180pp

A fascinating work on the nature of dictatorship, how it takes hold and how it survives, from the author of the international bestseller The Yacoubian Building The study of dictatorship in the West has acquired an almost exotic dimension. But authoritarian regimes remain a painful reality for billions of people worldwide who still live under them, their freedoms violated and their rights abused. They are subject to arbitrary arrest, torture, corruption, ignorance, and injustice. What is the nature of dictatorship? How does it take hold? In what conditions and circumstances is it permitted to thrive? And how do dictators retain power, even when reviled and mocked by those they govern? In this deeply considered and at times provocative short work, Alaa Al Aswany tells us that, as with any disease, to understand the syndrome of dictatorship we must first consider the circumstances of its emergence, along with the symptoms and complications it causes in both the people and the dictator. Alaa Al Aswany’s The Yacoubian Building was longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award in 2006 and has sold over a million copies worldwide. His work has been translated into twenty-nine languages and published in over a hundred countries. Al Aswany was named by The Times as one of the fifty best authors to have been translated into English in the last fifty years. ................ AUTUMN PREVIEW
