introducing anglet

the Atlanthal complex is the place to go for spa treatments in Anglet.

nglet is situated on the Atlantic Coast in southwest France, 667km from Paris. Nestled alongside the Adour river, Anglet forms part of the Anglet-Biarritz-Bayonne conurbation. With 11 separate fine-sand beaches spread over 4.5km, Anglet has become known as the ‘Little California’ of southern France. The main attraction in the area is surfing and Anglet is a go-to destination for surfers around the world.

One way to explore the natural environment in Anglet is to visit the Izadia Nature Park where a walking trail snakes through the dunes behind the Adour river. Izadia Park is rigorously maintained and the walk includes various viewing points designed to give you the best glimpse of the local wildlife. Here you can also learn about the plants and animals that co-exist in this harsh coastal environment.

A rich variety of other sports and activities are attracting a growing number of outdoor enthusiasts. Whether it’s jogging, horse-riding, golf, cycling or tennis, Anglet is a sporting paradise. Set back from the beaches, the landscape is mostly open grassland or dense forest, each equally attractive for walkers and cyclists. The paths through the extensive pine forest (Le Pignada) around the town are extremely popular for many family walks.

Although the beaches, forests and natural environment are important tourist attractions, Anglet has a year-round population of 40,000. With its university, commercial centres, theatre and paved town centre, Anglet has a distinctive identity. One building that stands out and should certainly be visited is the Villa Beatrix Enea. This stone villa was built in the early 20th century and is now home to many art exhibitions throughout the year.

Anglet and the surrounding Basque Country has a rich history. In 1854, Napoleon III and his wife were the first patrons of the ‘Chambre d’Amour’ and its natural spas - one of the most popular spots on the Basque coastline. Today,

introducing pau

© Ville de Pau - Communauté d'agglomération Pau-Pyrénées

t is no surprise that the Haute Route is coming to Pau because it is a must if you are planning to ride the mythical Pyrenean cols.

basketball team spends every summer at the House of Sports to prepare for international competitions. The historical and modern Grand Prix de Pau – a strong element of our heritage – takes over the city in May. This is not to forget the horses that are honoured each Autumn with the Étoiles de Pau, a three-day Event and one of six annual CCI four-star events in the world. Then there is the rugby, a huge sport in our region.

Pau is also a sports, nature and wildlife destination of choice due to its geographical and climatic advantages, its facilities and its English heritage going back to the 19th century. In Pau and its surroundings, thrill-seekers or walkers can either indulge in rafting or kayaking in the white water stadium or play golf on the green, the oldest in Europe. Then there are the walks by the River Gave in our urban natural park, in the forest of Bastard or in the many public parks and gardens of the city.

Since 2013, the city of Pau has engaged in the transformation of the Protective Zone of Heritage and Urban Landscape (ZPPAUP), part of an Enhanced Area of Architecture and Heritage (AVAP), to ensure compatibility between the interests of conservation and sustainable development.

In addition to these outdoor sports, our city hosts big events and welcomes elite athletes during their training who come to enjoy not just the facilities in Pau but the etiquette of the southwest, friendliness and good food.

Labelled City of Art and History since 2012 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the city is also engaged in a process of adding value throughout the year with many events revealing Pau’s richness and diversity.

Apart from Tony Estanguet, born and bred in Pau and a triple Olympic gold medallist in canoeing, the French centre of excellence is located here and many international teams train here. The French national

introducing tarbes

Main town of the Bigorre region, Tarbes takes benefit from an exceptional geographic situation. At the foot of the Pyrenean Mountains, it allows the access to many sites of exception within less than one hour trips: col du Tourmalet, col d’Aspin, Gavarnie, Pic du Midi, Lourdes… Located one and a half hour from the Atlantic Ocean, three hours from the Mediterranean Sea, Tarbes is the new stage-town of the 7th edition of Haute Route Pyrenees. The city is also well known of the cyclist world for being often crossed by the Tour de France. Nevertheless, the Pyrenean foothills town cannot be reduced to this only activity.

many fencers among which some have become Olympic or World Champions. Besides, Tarbes, town with a thousand faces, also has a rich history on which it has settled its cultural development. It is positioned as a Horse town, thanks to the Anglo-Arabic purebred. From this equestrian heritage, we still count nowadays the Haras de Tarbes (Stud farm) as well as the equestrian creation festival Equestria which has an international radiance. At the heart of the remarkable Jardin Massey, the Musée des Hussards, unique in the world, is another witness of the equestrian and military traditions dear to the town. At last, the Argentinian Tango festival “Tarbes en Tango” is one of the largest manifestations of that kind worldwide.

Indeed, one may think about the Petits As, the international tennis tournament for the 1214 years old, an unavoidable competition in this sport which has revealed more than one champion since 1982 (Nadal, Chang, Safin, Kournikova…). We may as well mention the France Shooting Championship, the International Chess Tournament or the Sabre d’Or, a competition reuniting the best saber cadets in the world. Tarbes has also raised

One may, without lying assert that these sportive and cultural events contribute to making Tarbes and it’s agglomeration rich and very dynamic.
