here is nothing Giada De Laurentiis wouldn’t do for a dream. It’s how she wound up in a haunted castle in the middle of northern Italy … and lived to tell me her tale.
After ending a 20-year relationship with the Food Network last June, the 52-year-old celebrity chef has been putting her heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears, and every other word you can think of into Giadzy, the lifestyle platform she founded in 2016 (whose e-commerce component launched in 2020 with a rebrand and relaunch last year) in homage to all things Italia, including ingredients, recipes, and travel tips. And while wandering through the cobblestoned streets of Sicily to track down olive oil shaped like the two-faced Moor’s head statue from The White Lotus and overindulging in truffles on a quest to find the best of the best in Piedmont certainly sounds like fun to me, it’s undoubtedly also a lot of work to personally vet the crème de la crème of Italian goods — and according to De Laurentiis, not nearly as glamorous as it sounds.
Enter: the haunted castle. After an exhausting day of tilling farm fields for carnaroli rice (which I learn makes risotto just that much better than typical arborio rice) in the Casalbeltrame region of northern Italy last October, the petite 5’2” chef found herself accepting an overnight invitation to the bastion. But Ashford Castle it was not.
“My team is small — there’s eight of us, all ladies — and four of us broke away for one hell of an adventure,” she recounts to me over Zoom, just before the end of 2022. “We’re a startup so it’s not fancy, and sometimes, we have to stay with the families [that produce the items we’re selling], which is always a little tricky. As much as I love it, it’s not always my favorite thing, but it definitely makes the trip stay within our budget, which is slim. [On this particular trip], we wanted to make Milan our home base, but it was too far most of these families are in the boondocks, in the middle of nowhere — so we ended up having to spend the night in an old castle, from the 1800s, that the owner is renovating. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and a step back in time, but it’s also very cold. So you think you’re going to see the queen at Kensington Palace or something, but instead, you walk in and it’s all original, with quite a few spiders. Our host thought, Giada probably wants to be on her own, away from everyone else, [because she’s a celebrity]. She put me in this tower by myself, which really freaked me out.”
She recounts walking nearly a mile in the dark, closing the door to her room, and pre-planning her looks for a video segment she’d be filming the next day — with glam, might I add, that she now does entirely herself (a radical change from her fancy Food Network life on programs like Giada Entertains and Giada at Home). She whipped out a baby steamer (a necessity for her), plugged it in, and promptly blew the entire castle’s power out.
“The entire place goes pitch-black, and I am panicked, because when you’re in a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere, it’s not like there’s lights coming from your neighbors. There are no neighbors. I got so scared, and I kept thinking, Ghosts! Was it really me who did this, or some other power? The owner told me she had seen figments of ghosts in the main house and hears noises at night, someone running up and down the stairs,” De Laurentiis recalls now with a shudder. “So I stumbled around in the dark and eventually found my cell phone, and one of the girls [from my team] eventually comes
with a candle. I felt so horrible. But I also kept thinking, I just can’t do this. I’m not 20 anymore. I can’t do this stuff. When I was in my early 20s, I backpacked a little bit, and I feel like I’m back there again in my 50s. I’ve got to tell you, I don’t have the stamina that I had when I was younger. I feel like I’m more of a scaredy-cat than I ever was when I was in my 20s. Did I freak the hell out? Yes. Did I shed a tear or two? Also yes. I was beside myself.”
Long story short, 45 minutes later, the power was back on, but De Laurentiis had had enough. “At that point, I said to one of the girls, ‘You’re going to have to sleep with me. I don’t care. Sleep in the bed with me. I just can’t sleep alone.’ I put the sheets over my head and think I might have slept three hours that night. Needless to say, I didn’t look so good the next day.”
Now that it’s over, she can laugh (be it uneasily), but the experience highlights something that is a fundamental part of who she — and what Giadzy, as an extension of her — is. “These days, most people think celebrities slap their names on any business and that’s it. For me, with Giadzy, it’s not like that. I’m boots on the ground, going to Italy every couple of months, and actually talking with families and producers, tasting their products, whatever they might be. People seem to think this is an easy-peasy little thing I’m doing on the side. They don’t realize I’m really there, just turning every stone to try and find the best stuff I can find.”
When she initially launched Giadzy, she tapped her Italian roots and family connections to find great family-owned, small-but-mighty purveyors. And like the brands she chooses, her own connections are equally as mighty and go back several generations prior to her own (she herself was born in Rome). Her great-grandparents once owned a pasta factory in the village of Torre Annunziata, outside of Naples, where her grandfather — the late, legendary film producer Dino De Laurentiis — once went door to door as a pasta and sauce salesman. He then moved to Rome, became a film producer, married a budding actress, and built not only a Hollywood empire by funding more than 600 films in 60 years, but a culinary one, too, when he opened his own specialty Italian food stores in the Beverly Hills- and New York City-based DDL Foodshow back in the early 1980s. It was because of her inspirational grandfather and watching him bustle around his shop when she was a little girl that Giada ultimately decided to launch Giadzy in the first place.
“[My grandfather] basically imported products, but also had a small restaurant and food-to-go, similar to what Eataly does. I fell in love with it, and that is where I realized he brought in all of his buddies that he grew up with — the ‘pizzaiolos,’ the butchers, you name it — and created an empire. All of what we know of Italian food today didn’t exist then, and people were just clamoring for it. Their minds were blown. That’s when I realized, I want to put smiles on people’s faces the way he does. I want to do food someday. I’m going to do it. So I went to college at UCLA and then to culinary school [at Le Cordon Bleu] in France.”
And while De Laurentiis has the best of all worlds — born in Italy, raised in America, educated in France — it is important to note that her extended family is still based in Italy, including her uncle Aurelio, an Italian film producer who owns Italian football clubs Napoli and Bari. With familial connections like

these, De Laurentiis automatically had her finger on the pulse of the Italian culinary scene. But these connections aren’t ones she’s planning on using forever. In fact, she’s already moving on and following her own path.
“I used to go to [my family] a lot for advice and to vet people, but we can’t continue to do that. We can’t rely on that. People needed to see diversity in all sorts of different products, so I had to start expanding my reach. Otherwise, I’d never grow.”
She’s ready to grow, and in the right way. Her focus now is on taking as many product-searching expeditions to Italy as often as possible. In 2022, she visited not just Sicily, but Milan, northern Italy, and Puglia. And in May of this year, she’ll make her second trip to Florence (the first was in January), in search of Like Water for Chocolate moments.
What she’s looking for specifically, be it tomatoes, antipasti, honey, preserves, truffles, and more, is “the emotion that it evokes when I’m tasting it. It’s also to do with the people — how passionate they are about what they’re making — and what ingredients go in it. The very small, family-run businesses take so much pride in what they do and where they source the ingredients.”
That said, De Laurentiis is quick to say that Giadzy is not an Eataly, a chain of brick-and-mortar Italian marketplaces that not only sell high-end Italian packaged goods but also encompass restaurants, delis, bakeries, bars, and a cooking school. “The difference,” she declares, “is that with Eataly, in my opinion, there’s no story behind it. You don’t know who the producers are. You don’t really know where it’s coming from, and you don’t know what to do with it. And that’s the element that I’m trying to add to it — the storytelling of the people behind these products. They’re usually fabulous stories that go way back. Also, what people need to do with the ingredients. Like, what can you cook with them? What recipes can you use them for, how should you use them to entertain, how do Italians use them in everyday life? These are a lot of the touch points that I think Eataly just does not hit and will never hit, because what grocery store does? No grocery stores do. They expect you to do the research on your own. And I think people just don’t have the energy for that, they just don’t. So if I’m going to tell you to buy certain olive oil — for instance, like the Moor’s head Teste di Moro olive oil from Frantoio Romano Vincenzo
I’m going to tell you all the story behind that olive oil. That’s not only what romanticizes it, but what connects the dots and creates this emotional bond. I’ve been doing the storytelling part for over 20 years now, but I just was never able to connect the dots in the sense of sourcing the products. That’s the part that I’ve always been missing, and that’s the part I always wanted to do.”
She pauses for a moment before explaining that this, ultimately, was why she decided to leave the Food Network. After 20 years, nine shows, and two Emmy wins, the network was not willing to grow with her in the way that she needed. And she, one of the International Hospitality Institute’s 100 most powerful, was ready for the next chapter.
Also, she wants that 360-degree experience. She needs it. This is her labor of love, and it’s been a long time coming. “I’m emotionally connected [to it] for sure. This is a project I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and I think 2020 sort of changed my view of what I was doing and recalibrated how I want to spend my time,” she says, adding, “I think that when you get older, when you turn 50, you reprioritize what it is you’re spending your time doing, and I think 2020 did that for everybody. At 50, I realized, It’s time to slow down. I don’t think I’m alone in that.”
here is one question that Giada De Laurentiis absolutely hates to be asked. (And, of course, I asked it.) Because there’s a saying — “Never trust a skinny chef” — and for a long time, she had to prove how very trustworthy she was (while still being, you know, skinny). But in my defense, I didn’t know how much she detested the question until after I asked it.
“I mean, listen, it’s been the No. 1 asked question my entire career,” she sighs. “In the beginning, it annoyed me a lot. I just felt like I fit the stereotype of ‘you can’t trust a skinny chef.’ Like, if you’re skinny, you must not know how to cook, and you must not eat, so you don’t know anything about ingredients. I think that it’s gotten better in the last four or five years, but also, I’ve been around for a long time. Maybe now people finally realize, Yes, she’s thin, but she does know how to cook. So I didn’t fit the stereotype. So, did it bug me at the beginning? A ton. But now? No. If they haven’t realized by now that I am who I am, and have been pretty consistent for the past 20 years, they’re never going to realize it.”
She goes on to explain that the real Italian way of life is vastly different from the American conception of it. Pasta for the main course? Not a thing! In Italy, it’s a starter only. Instead, entrees are predominantly fish-based. That all Italian food is the same, no matter where you go? Lies! Unbelievable pizza in Venice isn’t a thing, she says. Go to Naples instead. If you want lighter fare, go to the south of Italy, where it’s warmer, for a true Mediterranean diet. The north, by Switzerland, is much colder, and as such, dishes are heavier.
“Americans haven’t quite grasped yet that Italian food is not heavy and fattening; it’s actually a lot lighter than you think it is. But also, Italians move a lot more than Americans. It’s not such a sedentary culture.”
De Laurentiis is active — she’s based in Los Angeles, after all — and her culinary background is in southern Italian cuisine. Hence she’s specifically known for a lighter cooking style and dishes like lemon spaghetti, which, I should note, is always on the menu at her first major restaurant, eponymously named Giada, located at The Cromwell in Las Vegas. (Here, if you look carefully, you’ll see her quote — “I eat a little bit of everything and not a lot of anything” on the chandeliers.) Las Vegas is also the home of her casual concept, Pronto by Giada, which should be rapidly expanding nationwide in the coming year.
But why Las Vegas? The answer: she was made an offer she couldn’t refuse. (She actually uses the word “resist” here, but I personally cannot understand why a good Italian wouldn’t automatically quote The Godfather.) “I opened in Vegas because I got an offer I couldn’t resist [Giada, it’s crushing me to write this!], and that was to build a restaurant that overlooks the Strip and the Bellagio fountains from scratch. That kind of deal just does not happen in Vegas, and I knew it was something that would never happen again. And so I dove in, which is very much not my personality. I like to dip my toe in something and then be like, Oh, it feels good. OK, that’s warm enough, I can do that, and then go all in. With this one, I just dove right in to see what would happen, and it was probably the best career move I ever made.”
And here’s why. “I think that it legitimized me as a chef, especially with the boys, and it gave me notoriety all over the world. It kind of legitimized me in the sense that I could cook, and I could run a business that wasn’t just television. You know, television has gotten a lot better. But when I started and for the first 10 years of it, you weren’t really a chef if you cooked on television even though Food Network is aired [in] 90 countries — it’s all smoke and mirrors, right? But if you could open a restaurant and be successful, then you were legitimate. And at the time I opened in 2014, I

think that [Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken’s] Border Grill was the only female-branded restaurant on the Strip, so I was one of the first. And to have my name right on the Strip, so visible, really blew up my brand. For that, I am forever grateful because it could have completely gone the other way. But go big or go home, I guess. You’ve got to roll with the punches. You just never know what’s around the corner anymore.”
In general, that’s been the De Laurentiis way. That’s why it’s no surprise how many projects she has in the works. She’s expanding Pronto by Giada you’ll see it soon at LAX and in Arizona; opening fine-dining concepts like Italian eatery Luna in Scottsdale this September; focusing on her catering business, Giada Catering; and promoting a private label line on Giadzy as well as promoting the site at the upcoming South Beach Wine & Food Festival in Miami this month. She’s even getting into the movie business, having produced her first Hallmark film, 2022’s Always Amore, with another two in the pipeline for later this year.
I mention how very much she seems to be like her iconic grandfather, and she expresses her own surprise with a shake of her head. “Who knew that that would happen? Honestly, he was also blown away [by my career],” she admits. “My grandfather came from the Old World basically, where women don’t do things like this. Women get married, they have children, blah, blah, blah. It’s the boys that do stuff. So when the boys didn’t quite do it, and the girls did, I think he was a bit thrown. I didn’t plan on following in his footsteps, but that’s certainly the way the path has turned out.”
Speaking of boys’ clubs, well … it seems to me that most of the culinary world appears to be that way. Just 6% of the world’s top restaurants are helmed by female chefs, as it were, according to a 2022 study by Chef’s Pencil — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by De Laurentiis.
“I wish I could tell you it’s quickly changing, but it’s not,” she says. “I think it’s honestly also because the powers that be are still run by men, and men like to hang out with men. They want to hang out with women, sure, but for other reasons — not in a business sense. I remember building my restaurant in Vegas. It was hell. The respect was zero, and I was like, I know what I want, and I’m only doing what I want. I mean, it was a fight for everything. I got it, but I had to fight hard to get it. You’ve got to be willing to play a certain game. It’s not for everybody, and it’s exhausting. Because once you do that, that life, you’re all in,” she warns. “I mean, being a chef and having multiple restaurants, you don’t have Christmas, you don’t have the holidays. It’s very difficult to raise a family and do all of that.”
“But you did it,” I point out.
“But at a cost,” she maintains. “I was married for 12 years, and I got divorced. It’s definitely at a cost. I mean, I’m lucky — I have one kid — and maybe I would have had more if I hadn’t had this career, but it is what it is. I love it, and hopefully I won’t ever regret it. But for right now, I don’t. Some of my family tells me that when I’m in my 70s or 80s, I’m going to regret not having more kids, but for right now, I love the one I have; [15-year-old Jade is] fabulous. I’ve been able to take her all over the world with me. And I do think that the greatest luxury for me in life is time with my daughter. Also, I feel like my time is fleeting with her and also, for myself,” she says, almost as an afterthought. “I think we get older and we start to realize, I’m only good for this amount of time. After that, I’m not my best self anymore so I might as well just shut it down. But it takes a long time. That’s the beauty of aging — understand who you are, know your limits, set those boundaries, and don’t look back.”

Haute Living: How did the collaboration with chef Gabriel Kreuther come to life?
Jeremy Ford: When Lee Schrager approached me with the opportunity to participate in the Michelin Guide Dinner Series this year and suggested Gabriel, it was a no-brainer for me. He’s a legend in our industry, and I’m excited to collaborate with him.
HL: What are some notable aspects of the special dinner series you can share?
JF: While we’re still cooking up the menu, I guarantee that we will bring guests the best dining experience we can create.
HL: You recently opened Beauty & The Butcher. Can you tell us about the new opening?
JF: Beauty & The Butcher is an exciting new restaurant for me and one that is near to my heart. Our menu is built around the idea of collaboration, both within the kitchen and with our local farmers and purveyors who bring us the best ingredients around. Each dish features a mix of global spices, and we have a sick dry-aging program, curing everything from house-made charcuterie to seafood.

HL: What can we expect from the intimate lunch during SOBEWFF?
David Shim: I am really looking forward to our exclusive lunch with chef Marc Forgione of Peasant. He’s such a talented chef and [is] really well respected in our industry. During the brainstorming process, it was incredible to see how much his cuisine ― cooking over an open fire at his NYC restaurant ― translates into what we do at Cote. Our dishes truly complement each other on a whole other level, and I’m looking forward to taking people on this collaborative journey. In terms of dishes I’m most excited about, our “Steak & Eggs” is one of our signature star dishes, and we’ll also be spreading the love further with our A5 wagyu from Japan.
HL: Congratulations on receiving the Michelin star this year in Miami. What has the response been since the opening in the Miami Design District?
Simon Kim: Michelin coming to Miami definitely brought a whole other level of excellence and excitement to the dining scene in Florida. The response to our opening has been incredible. I immediately fell in love with Miami: the booming arts scene, the growing dining landscape, and the Design District most especially, which is so fashion-forward, elegant, and vibrant.
DS: Simon had it right opening up here, even right during the beginning of the pandemic. To be recognized in this new city has truly been a remarkable moment for us. My personal goal was to always strive to follow in the footsteps of those who came before me and trained me. Now, in Florida, we are the first generation of restaurants to receive a Michelin star. We are the ones paving the paths for future generations to come. This has given all of us — both front and back of the house — another reason to persevere, continue to push ourselves, and strive for the utmost excellence.

IN HIS SIXTH NBA SEASON, JAYSON TATUM HAS A RENEWED DRIVE TO WIN — AND HE’S BETTING ON SUCCESS

IT’S HOW WE SURVIVE THE DOWNS IN LIFE THAT SHOWS US WHAT WE’RE really made of, right? For Jayson Tatum, this is particularly true, but with a twist: it took a championship loss to make the Boston Celtics star remember to fully embrace and enjoy every moment of his wild NBA ride … and take none of the highs for granted.
One might say he’s finally given himself permission to see not just the game, but life itself, as a journey — not a destination. We take the cards we’re dealt and play them.
These are heavy topics for a pre-season Sunday — certainly atypical of a proper Sunday fun day. Tatum and I sit side by side in a secret two-story suite at Encore Boston Harbor. The sun is setting, his shoot is done, and he’s about to eat Chinese food from Red 8. But Tatum isn’t rushing. Instead, he’s quietly and thoughtfully answering each of my questions, his lanky, 6-foot-8-inch frame slouched and spilling out of a plush armchair.
It’s honestly hard to remember that he’s only 24. Not because he looks older (though if we equated height with age, he’d easily be pushing a century), but because there is a stoicism about him. He is watchful, seemingly taking everything in but revealing nothing. When he speaks, he looks at me only sporadically, his eyes shifting away slowly. I think he would make an excellent poker player.
I ask to play two truths and a lie, but, because he seems exhausted, I switch gears, flip a different card and come up with a new game one that he can play easily. I ask him to fill in the blank. Time is what?
If I were filling this out for him myself (blindly of course, given that I do not at all know him), I would say, “Time is important.” Because I cannot actively squirrel around in his head, I would have guessed said adjective because he has cultivated a massive collection of rare designer watches that he is extremely and expressively proud of. But I would have guessed wrong.
“Time,” he declares, “is precious.”
I raise my eyebrows at him. Go on.
He obliges. “Because it flies by,” he explains. “I remember being a little kid who could only think about the NBA and how far out of reach it seemed. I used to daydream about it. When I was in school, I would think, Can’t this hurry up? And it seems like I blinked and six years are gone; I’m already going into my sixth NBA season. Where is the time going? I vividly remember being in high school, getting drafted, playing the first game of my NBA career, and now, I’ve played five seasons.”
Five seasons of strength upon strength upon strength. To be 24 years old and have a career like Tatum’s is rare. After winning the ACC title during his first year at Duke, he decided to enter the NBA draft. It was the right choice, given that he was selected as a third-overall, first-round pick by the Celtics.
And since his 2017 start in the league, he has been named a three-time NBA All-Star and an NBA Eastern Conference finals’ Most Valuable Player. He also helped his team make it to the NBA Finals earlier this year. And did I mention he also won a gold medal during the Tokyo Olympics? No? Because that happened, too.
However, for the past five years, he has been on a mission to prove himself. His NBA journey has predominantly been about testing his own limits, topping his own personal best. “I think up until this point, every year I’ve wanted to improve in every statistical category, and I’ve done that. Every year I’ve averaged more points than I did the year prior; I’ve averaged more rebounds, more assists, more minutes. I’ve been named an All-Star three times, been to the conference finals three times, got to the championships.”
He might have been getting better, but was he living in the moment, fully embracing being one of the hottest young players in the league? It didn’t sound like it, to be honest, until something major happened: for the first time in his career, his team made it to the NBA Finals … and lost.
“It was the worst feeling ever — an empty feeling — and I don’t want to feel that way again,” he declares. “It was as low as I’ve ever felt in my life. I felt as if I let everybody that was dependent on me down. I was mentally and physically exhausted. I didn’t have anything left in me. It’s tough to think about, even now, because you realize how close you were to accomplishing the opportunity of a lifetime; you were so close, but not close enough, and that can be discouraging, like, This shit is too hard. And it stings for a couple of days, honestly. I didn’t leave the house. I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I was trying to cancel the outside world, regardless of what people were saying; I tried to get away from basketball, in a sense. But I spent time with my son, my family, the people that genuinely care about me, and I started to get my groove back.”
Like everything in life, losing has its purpose, though it might have been hard to see at the time. And the Celtics’ 4-2 loss to the Golden State Warriors last season was a particularly bitter pill to swallow — for Tatum, the Celtics, and every single one of their die-hard New England fans.
“My mindset is a little different now,” he admits. “I remember what it felt like, getting to the championship and losing. And everything I’ve done in training for the coming season is to not have that feeling again. My mindset now is what do I need to do to win a championship. Now, there’s no specific number I need to average, no specific number of rebounds. I just want to win. If you win, if your team has all the success, all the individual things will come along with that. If we win a championship, that means I’m playing at the highest level.”
So now, in his sixth season, he’s ready to go, fight, and most importantly — win. “I will do literally whatever it takes to never feel that way again,” he vows. “And I’m coming in in great shape. I made sure to take the off-season to get

healthy, so that I could perform at my highest level, so that I could dominate, be the best, go out there every night and be able to say, ‘I’m the best player in the world.’”
Tatum’s last season might not have had the happy ending he wanted, but again, he’s only 24. Twenty-freaking-four. (He’ll turn 25 on March 3.) And by this ripe old age, he has surpassed his hero and mentor, Kobe Bryant (with whom Tatum became close before Bryant’s passing in 2020), in being the youngest player ever to score 20-plus points in four straight playoff games. He also joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as one of the only rookies in NBA history to record 10 games of 20-plus points scored in a first playoff run. He has tied Larry Bird’s single game franchise scoring record by scoring 60 points against the San Antonio Spurs, was voted into the 2021-22 All-NBA First Team, and was named the Eastern Conference finals MVP en route to an NBA Finals berth. That five-year, $163 million contract extension that he signed in 2020 to remain with the Celtics should show the team’s faith in him. And one can only hope that it’s enough to give him faith in himself.
Yet Tatum doesn’t need to rush, or test himself, to make these moments happen. He can savor them, letting all moments, big and small, successfully tell the story of a young boy from St. Louis — a starry-eyed kid who worshipped at the altar of Kobe Bryant — with a big dream, a raging inner fire, and a desire to succeed that has superseded all else.
He admits now, “In the past, I wanted to rush things, but now, I’m trying to enjoy these moments. When you’re a kid, you want to grow up so fast. You want to be an adult. And now that I am an adult, I want to relax; I want to enjoy this.”
And finally, Jayson Tatum is all in.
IT’S A SURREAL MOMENT. OUR PHOTO SHOOT CREW IS WANDERING (purposefully) down the red and purple patterned corridors of the Wynnowned resort. Tatum is in the middle of a pack that could be mistaken for an entourage, but he’s pretty unmissable: not just because of his height (but yeah, duh, that too), but because he’s wearing sunglasses — inside — and a lavish, incredible, still-unreleased Amiri coat. It’s no wonder that fans, with their rapid-fire iPhone flashes, have started to gather on the sidelines, parting like the Red Sea. Jayson Tatum isn’t just a star — he is the star. And he looks like one (which is not always the case, as we all know).
It isn’t hard to understand why, as we do a deep dive into the nitty-gritty of his collection of 14 timepieces from Richard Mille, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Cartier. But his first and most significant watch purchase was also his worst. The Tatum of yesterday wanted the best of the best. But the Tatum of today knows how to get it.
Here’s the story of his first watch: “I’m from St. Louis, and there, hip-hop and basketball influence one another. Rappers want to be basketball players and vice versa. So when I was growing up, you would see all of these athletes with diamond watches. I see that, as a young kid, and I’m like, I really want those things. So, when I get to the NBA, we get all the way to the conference finals. In Game 7, we lose. But you get playoff bonuses for how far you go: first
round, second round, third round, championship. And the [farther] you go, the bigger the bonus. I save all of my NBA salary, but I convinced my mom that the bonus wasn’t technically my salary. It was extra. And I was like, I want to get an iced-out watch. So I took $30,000, found a jeweler, and bought a two-tone, iced-out watch. They call it a ‘bust-down’ Rolex. And I couldn’t have been happier. I felt like I had made it, like I had it. I had an iced-out Rolex from a jeweler and I felt like a rapper. And it’s like with anything, when you’re not educated, you don’t know what you don’t know. As I’ve gotten more educated about watches, I realized that this particular watch was the dumbest thing I could have bought because it for sure had already lost its value. But at the time, I was 20; all of my friends were still in college. I had no frame of reference. It wasn’t until later that I realized those are secondhand diamonds. Those aren’t Rolex diamonds, and those are just diamonds a jeweler put on a watch. It devalues the watch. And so, it was a learning mistake, but I still have it because it was the first watch I ever bought. I’ll never get rid of it. But it’s just always a reminder of what life has taught me about watches.”
This sounds like a metaphor for life, no? If I were a betting woman, I would say that this means quite a few things: “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes — but they’ll cost you”; “Each mistake is really a lesson in disguise”; and “Never forget where you came from.”
Well, there’s certainly no danger of that last one ever happening. Though he’s been here in the Cradle of Liberty city since 2017, he still lists his hometown as a primary thing that defines him.
“I know St. Louis isn’t known for many great things — crime being one of [the negatives] — but it shaped the person that I am. Growing up there prepared me for life. There are a lot of things I saw at a young age that kids shouldn’t see. I’ve seen drive-by shootings. I’ve lived in a neighborhood where kids that I would play basketball with every day would get arrested. I’ve seen real-life prostitutes walking down the alley and drug addicts on the corner. I saw a pink eviction notice on our house; we almost got kicked out and had to find somewhere to live. So I think all of those things made me grow up a little faster.”
He pauses for a moment, and says in his quiet, yet clear, voice, “We have a saying: ‘If you can make it in St. Louis, you can make it anywhere.’ [The way I see it], growing up in a tougher environment made me a stronger person. I wouldn’t change where I’m from for the world.”
It’s a different vibe from his life in Boston, to be sure. When he heads home every summer to see his friends and family, when he eats at the same places he’s been going to his entire life, he’s content. “When people see me in Boston, they like that I’m on the Celtics, so they love me for that reason. But when people see me back home, regardless of their age — they could be 65 or someone I went to school with — it’s like, ‘We’re proud of you.’ Nobody back home cares what team I play for; they like that I represent St. Louis. It’s more of a genuine ‘He’s one of us.’ And that’s one of the best feelings you can have.”
He names a few of his hometown’s most famous residents, from rappers

like Nelly to former basketball players like Larry Hughes and David Lee to current stars like Bradley Beal, before recalling, “Growing up, I would always tell my mom, ‘I want to be the biggest person to come out of St. Louis. I want to be the best basketball player in the world. And I want everybody to know that I represent where I’m from.’ Because ultimately, I give kids hope. I went to this school, I grew up on this block. I went to this corner store. I played at this rec center that you play at. I played football here. And now, I’m on magazines and commercials and even chip containers.” (Tatum is the face of Ruffles Flamin’ Hot BBQ, both literally and figuratively — his mug is even on the bag.) “A lot of kids from St. Louis have never left the city. They don’t know anything bigger than their reality. So when I go home, I have toy drives for inner-city kids during Christmas. I hold free basketball camps. I donate laptops, iPads, and things like that. I just want to come home and show people that I care about them, that it’s possible to do something more. You don’t have to be a professional athlete; you don’t have to be an NBA player. A lot of kids here don’t dream, because they don’t think that they can. And, you know, I’d like to change that narrative.”
While he’s likely doing this for his home city, he’s definitely doing it for one youngster in particular: his son, Jayson Christopher Jr., aka “Deuce,” his “twin and best friend.”
Tatum lights up full of sunshine when talking about his kid. He is finally showing something other than the laid-back demeanor I have become accustomed to. I wonder if it is only his son that can produce this true and palatable joy, but I don’t wonder for long — he is talking, sharing an ode to fatherhood, and it is both unexpected and lovely.
“You never know how much you can love somebody until you have a kid. I had [Deuce] when I was 19. He was born on December 6, the year I was drafted. So, for two-and-a-half months after the season started, life was challenging. I had just moved to Boston. I was 19, starting a new career, and I was nervous to be a dad. And I was a little selfish at first. I didn’t think it was the best idea to be having a kid at that time. I was more concerned with how he was going to affect me and my career. I wasn’t as excited as I should have been because I was young; I just wanted to play basketball. I wasn’t ready to be a dad. But I’ll never forget this: I wasn’t super thrilled until his mom pushed him out, and I saw him for the first time. They put him in my arms and literally, it switched. And I was like, This is like the best shit ever. Seeing him, and holding him. And ever since that day, we’ve been essentially attached at the hip. There’s no better feeling than being a dad, being a parent. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him.”
There are a few specific things he is doing. He says, “I try to be a good person. I don’t want money or fame to influence the way that I act. I like being around people that treat me like Jayson, not like a person that they see on TV. I like being around people I can genuinely be myself around, people I grew up with. I’m most comfortable just being able to be myself and not just the guy you see on TV.” (I see the point he’s making, but I do want to point out that he’s not just on TV — he’s also on the aforementioned Ruffles bags, and you may see something resembling his visage on his first signature shoe with Jordan Brand, the Jordan Tatum 1, when it debuts this spring.)
Jayson Tatum is not just one thing. He is the star athlete, the father, the friend, the hometown hero, the reigning prince of Boston. But, at the end of the day, he is still very much an enigma.
“People always say that I’m very in control of my emotions. And whether it’s playing basketball, or it’s practicing, I’m always calm. It’s a skill of mine, to always remain calm, to think before I do something. I’m very laid-back, and I’m very observant — I listen more than I speak. I never get too excited. I never get too sad. And that’s just kind of me.”
I’m standing by my prior opinion: Jayson Tatum is an excellent player, regardless of the game. And right now, he’s holding all of the cards.

ROLEX’S SKY-DWELLER IS THE ULTIMATE TRAVELER’S TIMEPIECE. Conducive to a jet-setting lifestyle, its dial displays two time zones, allowing the wearer to see local time through the conventional center hands and reference time in 24-hour format via an off-center disc.
The Sky-Dweller is equipped with a mechanism of interaction between the rotatable bezel, the winding crown, and the movement: the Ring Command system, which allows the user to select the watch’s functions one by one and set them quickly and securely. Global travelers can read the reference time using a red triangle pointing to the off-center disc. The disc’s 24-hour graduation allows travelers to distinguish daytime hours from nighttime hours in the reference time zone (for example, 10 a.m. versus 10 p.m.).
The watch also features Saros, a revolutionary annual calendar whose design was inspired by the astronomical phenomenon of the same name. The Greek term “saros” has been used since antiquity to designate an approximately 18year cycle of alignment patterns between the sun, Earth, and moon where they reach equal distances to one another in the same sky zone. The Saros annual calendar, whose qualities are attributable to an ingenious patented mechanism, automatically distinguishes between 30- and 31-day months. It displays the correct date throughout the year and requires only one adjustment yearly, on March 1.
Months of the year are marked by 12 discrete apertures around the dial’s perimeter, outside the hour markers: January at 1 o’clock, February at 2 o’clock, and so on. A red aperture indicates the current month.
The Sky-Dweller’s Oyster case — 42 millimeters in diameter and guaranteed to be waterproof to a depth of 330 feet (100 meters) — is a paragon of robustness and elegance. Two new Omega watches have been crafted to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise.

IT WAS 60 YEARS AGO, ON OCTOBER 5, 1962, THAT ONE of the most iconic movie characters in the history of cinema made his on-screen debut. The 25 action-packed James Bond movies have gained mass appeal and a raving fan following over the years. And while everyone has a favorite, Omega has a particular soft spot for 1995’s GoldenEye. This was the first Bond movie where the iconic 007 wore an Omega on his wrist.
The innovative and stylish partnership has not wavered since. Keeping up with James Bond’s own evolution, Omega watches have evolved over time.
Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming worked on five Bond films between 1995 and 2006 and was the person who initially proposed that 007 wear an Omega. “I was convinced that Commander Bond, a naval man, a diver, and a discreet gentleman of the world, would wear this watch,” she said.
It turns out Hemming was spot on with her choice, as Omega has an authentic connection to Britain’s Ministry of Defense. The company delivered more than 110,000 watches to pilots, navigators, and soldiers during World War II.
Inspired by the same Seamaster that James Bond wore in GoldenEye, Omega creates watchmaking magic through the film-themed caseback of the new commemorative Seamaster Diver 300M, replicating the famous 007 opening sequence. The new watch is driven by a precise Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8806 and is presented on a mesh-style bracelet — in the
same style as James Bond’s Omega watch in No Time to Die Its bezel and dial are both made from blue oxalic-anodized aluminum, with the dial featuring laser-engraved waves and the bezel featuring a diving scale filled with white Super-LumiNova. Also, spot the commemorative “60,” which replaces the diving scale’s traditional inverted triangle and luminescent green dot, which links to the minute hand.
For collectors of the steel version, there’s a blue wooden presentation box in the original Diver 300M wave pattern, with three dots inspired by the classic Bond opening title sequence, including a secret push button on the right.
The Canopus Gold iteration of this timepiece is a nod to Ian Fleming’s Jamaican home, Goldeneye. The dial has been made from natural grey silicon, and thanks to the crystallites, each pattern is unique, guaranteeing the wearer that no two dials are ever alike. In tribute to the Jamaican flag, the bezel is circled with a paving of green- and yellow-treated natural diamonds in 10 different tropical shades, which range from extra-dark forest green to cognac.
Owners of the Canopus Gold edition receive their watches in an elegant mango tree box with mother-of-pearl marquetry, film-inspired dots, and a “60 Years of Bond” logo. The use of the mango tree references a famous song from the first James Bond film, while the mother-of-pearl is a nod to the shells of Crab Key.

TO CELEBRATE THE DYNAMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN artists and high watchmaking during the 2022 Art Basel Miami Beach, Hublot exclusively debuted the MP-09 Tourbillon BiAxis 5-Day Power Reserve. A world first, the watch’s renowned gemstone pattern has been reimagined using technicolor composites inserted into the mass of a 3D carbon case. Catapulting the iconic rainbow design into the modern era, the new timepiece embodies all the guiding elements of Hublot, from the concept and method to the materials and mechanisms. The rainbow effect actually uses carbon and composites instead of colored gemstones, and that makes this timepiece incredibly rare. It replicates the natural variations on the surface of the case usually achieved by the elemental differences of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds.
“We have mastered carbon. We have mastered the traditional rainbow setting,” admits Ricardo Guadalupe, the CEO of Hublot. “But no one was yet to master 3D carbon with the rainbow effect, quite simply because no one had thought about it. That is what makes Hublot different: we explore the unknown regions of haute
horlogerie. This new ‘MP’ is therefore not just another Manufacture Piece: it embodies what Hublot is. Being first, unique, and different. And that will never change.”
Limited to just eight timepieces worldwide, the MP-09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis 5-Day Power Reserve is an artistic masterpiece from the inside out. The case boasts a bold 49 millimeters and is braided as thin bars of carbon are laid flat just a few millimeters apart — creating a complex dimension as composites are placed vertically into the gaps and a third carbon mesh raises all components to the same level. (Hundreds of colored inserts were created to achieve this result.) The new MP-09’s surface is entirely smooth and polished to the touch.
Inside, the MP-09 is equipped with the signature caliber — the HUB9009.H1.RA.B movement with manual winding — and a 5-day power reserve featuring a bi-axial tourbillon, with one complete rotation per minute for the first axis and a second rotation every 30 seconds for the second axis.
There’s no doubt that this watch is the epitome of the brand’s ethos: Hublot Loves Art.

A. LANGE & SÖHNE HAS MADE HISTORY FOR THE SECOND time. In 2022, the watchmaker presented two new versions of the awardwinning Zeitwerk: second-generation versions of the mechanical watch in both platinum and pink gold. In 2009, A. Lange & Söhne sent shock waves through the watchmaking industry with the reveal of the Zeitwerk, as the unprecedented concept featured large jumping numerals for the hours and minutes and a constant-force escapement as a beat controller. Now, the second generation further pushes technical boundaries with new developments and seven patents woven throughout the movement. At first glance, the design details have been subtly modified, adhering to the original style while advancing the design for the first time in 13 years. The focal point of the dial continues to be the time bridge made of German silver (a material often used by A. Lange & Söhne for bridges and cocks), which fools most as it does not actually contain silver. In this new Zeitwerk, the time bridge was thoroughly redesigned to make more room for the subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock — ultimately proving that even the slightest design details within fine watchmaking truly matter. Other minor
design updates within the dial include the last 12 hours, now marked in red to indicate that the tension of the mainsprings is waning, and the famous “Made in Germany” signature now sits in the lower part of the seconds display rather than under the time bridge.
Inside, the Zeitwerk is powered by the newly evolved manual-wind Caliber L043.6, which has a double power reserve of 72 hours made possible by the patented barrel design with two mainsprings. When fully wound, the Zeitwerk has enough energy for 4,320 minute jumps (72 jumps with all three discs, 360 jumps with two discs, and 3,888 jumps with one disc). The new, simpler hour setting allows the hour disc to be set separately with the pusher at 4 o’clock.
With seven patents and over 450 pieces used within the movement, it’s important to note that, somehow, A. Lange & Söhne managed to reduce the thickness of the case by 0.4 millimeters (now 41.9 mm by 12.2 mm) a massive design feat in the world of fine watchmaking. The secondgeneration Zeitwerk reveals A. Lange & Söhne’s dedication to constantly redefining the limits of technical feasibility, living up to Walter Lange’s motto urging the need “to never stand still.”

In the Basque Country’s Rioja wine region of Spain, with the Sierra de Cantabria’s snow-capped peaks protecting the region’s vineyards from the cold north winds, is one of the most visually remarkable hotels in the world. I actually defy you to see it and think otherwise. Hotel Marqués de Riscal was built by none other than world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, who conceived his avantgarde idea after opening a 1929 vintage (his year of birth) at the Cathedral — the historic cellar with a unique collection of over 130 vintages treasured by the Marqués de Riscal winery since 1862. Gehry imagined the hotel as the epicenter of a “City of Wine,” with the hotel as a “chateau of the 21st century.” And he wasn’t far off. From a distance, the building resembles a silvery bauble wrapped in shimmering titanium strips in metallic tones of deep pink, gold, and silver — the colors found on Marqués de Riscal bottle caps — and in the ripe, pinkish red of the wine itself (which guests are treated to a bottle of upon arrival). Elsewhere, visually, the hotel continues to be a marvel. Cushioned window seats and headboards are upholstered in soft maroon leather according to Gehry’s specifications, while bathrooms are lined with mottled dark grey-green marble. The interiors are highlighted best in the Gehry suite, which features a unique, intricate shape and a magnificent terrace overlooking the village of Elciego. Amenities in all rooms are courtesy of Caudalie, whose products are derived from grapes and vines; the brand oversees the spa as well. As can be expected from the City of Wine, absolutely everything here is exquisite, from the spa treatments to spectacular epicurean experiences. In fact, its Restaurante Marqués de Riscal was awarded with a Michelin star. Be sure to make time for a full guided tour of Herederos del Marqués de Riscal winery, which ends with — you guessed it — a wine tasting, for total immersion into the winemaking process. Those who venture to Provence are in for a treat, especially when staying at the luxurious, sun-dappled Villa La Coste. Here, halfway between Aixen-Provence — the birthplace of Cézanne — and the Luberon Regional Natural Park, is the home of the Château La Coste and its beautiful range of biodynamic wines. But first, a bit about the picture-perfect property. Its location is the stuff of legend: it is perched on a hillside, on the edge of a forest, and set among surrounding vineyards with views of the Luberon Valley beyond and lavender fields for days. At Montage Healdsburg, located at the north edge of Healdsburg in California’s Sonoma County, emphasis is placed on the local landscape — in particular, the 22,000 carefully preserved oak trees that surround the stunning 258-acre property. Its exterior can be likened to camouflage, with its “skin” purposefully selected to match the bark of its trees. This haute hotel clearly plays to its location, from lobby centerpiece Scout Field Bar — an indoor-outdoor watering hole that hosts wine tastings by day and a full bar by night — to signature eatery Hazel Hill, which celebrates the best of French-influenced California fare with varietals to match. A visit to Il Borro is essential to your health and happiness, especially if you’re an oenophile. This pedigreed 13th-century property, located in the heart of a medieval Tuscan village in the upper Arno valley (a wide, natural basin formed by the course of its eponymous river and bordered by the Pratomagno massif and the Chianti hills), had fallen into disrepair until it was purchased by the Ferragamo family in 1993. The Ferragamos’ mission: to lovingly and carefully restore the property to its former glory, thereby preserving its history and traditions. Oh, how they’ve succeeded! Today, Il Borro is a zero-carbon estate that produces more energy that it uses. It is highlighted by a lush, three-hectare “cultivated garden” in which seasonal vegetables are grown, as well as a cutting-edge farm that has been entirely organic since 2015. The estate, which is part of the Relais & Châteaux association, includes a historic residence, a villa set among merlot vineyards, 58 exclusive suites, a spa, a wine and art gallery, a centuries-old wine cellar, and two restaurants in the superb Osteria del Borro and Il Borro Tuscan Bistro (both overseen by executive chef Andrea Campani). Best of all, Il Borro is home to 210 acres of vineyards from which 12 wines are produced, including the Alessandro dal Borro IGT Toscana Syrah (100% syrah), Il Borro IGT Toscana Rosso (50% merlot, 35% cabernet sauvignon, 15% syrah), and Petruna in Anfora IGT Toscana Sangiovese (100% sangiovese). Ten of the 12 wines are entirely organic — so I think that means you can have your wine and drink it too (in the same place, no less). And if you hadn’t gathered this already, the wine theme is sprinkled around the property like fairy dust, from rooms surrounded by grapevines to a slew of vino-specific experiences, from wine tours to wine-pairing cooking classes, as well as golf and artisan workshops — a love letter from the Ferragamo family to those who define the local area.

THE VINES RESORT & SPA
The Vines of Mendoza is an extraordinary place, and one that’s in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions to boot. Imagine sipping a glass of syrah, tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, bonarda, or malbec — all of which the area is defined by — at the base of the Andes, within Mendoza’s prestigious Uco Valley. It’s pretty dang awe-inspiring. Life-changing, one might say (as one just did). It’s a small but mighty property, with 21 villas ranging in size from 1,000 to 2,700 square feet, all of which are beautiful places to sip a glass, watch the sun rise and set, and just enjoy life. (The two-bedroom deluxe villas also have a private deck, a gas fireplace, an outdoor handmade clay tub with Andes mountain views, and spa-inspired bathrooms, so life, needless to say, is enjoyed best here.) But you won’t be sitting around simply sipping unless you want to be;there is much to be enjoyed here. At the root of The Vines is a private ownership experience, where guests have the chance to work side by side with world-renowned consulting winemaker Santiago Achaval to make a custom, small-batch wine. There’s an adventure called “Play in the Vineyard,” where guests can actually harvest grapes in wine camp during harvest season. There’s also a restaurant from famous Argentine chef Francis Mallmann, who creates inspired regional dishes showcasing Argentina’s famous beef using his “Siete Fuegos,” or “seven fires,” open-flame cooking techniques. And there’s much to explore off-property, too. With hundreds of wineries and limitless outdoor activities — including heli-skiing straight from The Vines — in a place where there are 300 days of sunshine a year, the possibilities are truly endless.

There is no other way for me to describe Les Sources de Caudalie than “magical.” This beautiful resort that peeks out from the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a Graves great growth, at the gateway to Bordeaux — just northwest of Sauternes and Médoc — resembles an Old World-style country retreat, which is apt given that it has existed since the 16th century. Here, there are vines for days, a pond where ducks swim lazily, a watermill, and, of course, Château Smith Haut Lafitte — its cooperage and cellars, where 1,000 barrels are kept. This timeless vibe continues on in carefully decorated rooms (each having an evocative name, like Claret and Archipelago) and in the Spa Vinotherapie, which features Caudalie, a beauty line made from the skin of grapes; a hammam and natural hot spring round out that earthy feel. Les Sources de Caudalie is also home to a 2 Michelin starred restaurant courtesy of chef Nicolas Masse, who highlights fruits and vegetables from an on-site vegetable garden and meat and dairy from the property’s own farms. The newly redecorated restaurant has been completely painted in a deep carbon color to create an enveloping box, with decorative elements, lighting, and tableware all in pure, mineral shades to put exquisite, beautifully presented meals center stage. As could be expected, wine pairings — presented by Head Sommelier

If you’re searching for the absolute best wine hotel in South Africa, let me assure you, La Residence is it. This stunning property is a slice of heaven. It is located on a private, 30-acre estate surrounded by mountains and vineyards in the heart of the country’s predominant wine region, the Franschhoek Valley in Cape Winelands, an hour’s drive from Cape Town. It is an ideal place for cabernet sauvignon and shiraz to thrive, surrounded by plum orchards with peacocks weaving colorfully among the vines. With just 11 rooms, privacy is a key selling point at this idyllic escape that can accommodate up to 22 people. As such, every room is unique, with its own color scheme and design references — all over-the-top opulence. Think marbled floors, grand chandeliers, and Persian rugs. (My favorite rooms are the two-bedroom vineyard suites, which feature their own private pools.) The dining here is as exquisite as the rooms: the hotel features a lavish breakfast buffet made with local ingredients and produce hand-picked from on-site vegetable and herb gardens; a loggia for sunset aperitifs; and a dining hall reminiscent of an old English manor (replete with dazzling chandeliers, black-and-white flooring, and vast fireplaces), where local wines are always a fixture of the menu. That in-house spa therapists are on call, that the property offers sightseeing tours via helicopter, or that wine tasting by vehicle, Harley-Davidson, horseback, bicycle, or tram are all on offer is actually, once you’ve visited La Residence, no surprise at all.

Six Senses Douro Valley, located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley in Portugal, offers a heady combination of romantic 19th-century architecture and contemporary interiors, with the River Douro winding through the oldest wine-producing region in the world. The resort’s estate covers 19 acres, with 60 guest accommodations in what was once a historic manor house. The rooms, which feature a necessary blend of modern tech and vintage styling, truly have some of the most glorious views one could imagine — all of which showcase the vines and the river. The always-important dining options are a celebration of the region here, with much of the produce coming from the verdant valley and surrounding countryside, including an on-site organic vegetable and herb garden, and used at the Vale de Abraão Restaurant Open Kitchen and Terrace. There’s also a dining pop-up experience with dinner tables tucked into the woods by the river — the location and the menu are kept secret until the last minute — as well as a wine library featuring vintages from the valley. Don’t miss the behemoth 23,700-square-foot Six Senses Spa — one of the benchmarks of the brand — which highlights a range of locally inspired therapies in the Douro Valley. Naturally, grapes are incorporated. To maximize the wine-themed experience, Six Senses provides wine-and-dine river cruises, interactive oenology courses, visits to nearby wineries — where you will meet the winemakers — and even the opportunity to play winemaker for the day. And although it only comes once a year, harvest time in the fall (specifically September and October) is a great time to visit for a barefooted grape-stomping experience.

If it feels like New Zealand is already at the ends of the earth, you haven’t seen anything yet. This is what it feels like the moment you arrive at Wharekauhau, which is set in the spectacular foothills of the Remutaka Mountain Range and the clifftops of Palliser Bay, located within the Kiwi country’s Wairarapa wine region, just outside of Wellington. In my opinion, Wharekauhau is distinctive and incredible for several things (one not being how difficult it is to pronounce). One: it is owned by Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley. Two: it is where Prince William and his princess, Kate Middleton, chose to vacation. Three: it is a place best accessed by helicopter. (How many hotels can you say that about?) Four: its house dog is named Merlot. Five: oh, the wines! You did know that this is a wine region, but did you know that Bill Foley also has his own wine labels? In New Zealand, those include Clifford Bay, Dashwood, Grove Mill, Roaring Meg, Mt. Difficulty, Martinborough Vineyard, Te Kairanga, and Vavasour — and a visit to most can be accommodated on what the hotel refers to as the “Signature Foley Wine Flight.” It’s an exclusive experience for hotel guests to venture to three Foley family vineyards in wine regions that span both the South and North islands by helicopter. It really is as baller as it sounds. And when you’re back at Wharekauhau, shoot for the stars and book the Foley Villa — a 4,500-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-level lodge with heated marble floors, an outdoor terrace, and complete privacy. The Yeatman Hotel has a swimming pool shaped like a decanter, and this illustrates how I felt when visiting the property: I wanted to dive right in. This property, in my opinion, is the one to beat in Porto, the city that gave its name to its signature drink: port. Set among the protected historic center of the cellars of the famous port wine houses in Vila Nova de Gaia, The Yeatman offers guests panoramic views over the Douro River, a magical respite from day-to-day life, and complete immersion into the world of port. Its proximity to WOW — the neighboring cultural district of seven museums including the Instagram-friendly Pink Palace, Planet Cork, and Porto Fashion and Fabric Museum; shops; over a dozen restaurants and bars; and even a wine school, all created by Adrian Bridge, the inventor of rosé port, CEO of port brand Taylor Fladgate, and owner of The Yeatman —a truly comprehensive destination. But back to the hotel. Why is this the one to beat? I’ll list the ways. Each room has authentic and original details, such as the use of traditional Portuguese tiles, with themed corridors that highlight the history of the city. Each room highlights a specific brand of Portuguese wine as well, with thoughtful details to match. My personal favorite, however, is the Bacchus suite — one of the hotel’s iconic master suites — which is appropriately named after the Roman god of wine. It extends onto a furnished conservatory with a fireplace and a private exterior terrace and includes a glorious round copper bathtub, a freestanding fireplace feature, and a large, rotating bed. (Arguably, one might prefer the Presidential suite, which features a wine barrel-shaped bed as well as its own swimming pool and garden.) ROLLS AND ROYCE. TWO INDIVIDUALS WITH THE NAMES CHARLES ROLLS and Henry Royce joined together in 1904 and created an automobile business. Soon, their names became inextricably bound in the annals of luxury automobile makers. No doubt that, upon seeing their names in the heading of this story, you’ve immediately conjured up some images. Perhaps those images include visions of Daddy Warbucks’ car, old photos of Hollywood stars arriving at premieres or award shows, or magazine articles lauding the winners at international concours events. You may even have envisioned a customized Rolls-Royce being used for such disparate tasks as ferrying Sir Lawrence of Arabia around the desert sands and carrying shahs going out to hunt tigers in India. Yes, Rolls-Royce is a storied name and has continued to burnish its well-deserved reputation during the 116-plus years since the company was founded.
For the past year or so, the company has focused on making just three models: the Phantom (the headliner of the brand and the largest of their cars); the Ghost (a four-door vehicle that, though a full-size sedan, is still quite a bit smaller than the Phantom); and the Cullinan (Rolls-Royce’s large SUV, which has been a hit for the company). However, not long before press time, Rolls-Royce announced the Spectre, its first production car to be fully electric — touted as the “world’s first ultra-luxury electric super coupe” — with customer deliveries set to commence later this year. Today, we are focusing on the Phantom.
The flag-bearer Phantom nameplate was first introduced in the mid-1920s and is now in its eighth generation, with Phantom VIII being introduced in 2017. One thing’s for sure: the Phantom is a B-I-G car: about 227 inches long (for the standard wheelbase car; the extended wheelbase car is over 8 inches longer); approximately 80 inches wide; about 65 inches tall; and over 5,700 pounds in weight (and several hundred pounds more for the extended wheelbase edition).
The cabin is ultra-quiet and amazingly luxurious — every surface is smooth and a pleasure to touch; everything that can be seen has been polished, painted, plated, or otherwise completed to an astounding level of perfection. All of the materials are of the highest caliber and feel substantial and well thought out. The vaunted heating and air conditioning duct ends are commented on by virtually everyone, as they feel as though they were carved from pure platinum. And that
may be one of the most apparent reasons that make Rolls-Royce the pinnacle of beauty and quality — an attention to detail that is so rarely seen these days.
Despite the Phantom’s considerable weight and noticeable proportions, the performance of this luxury supercar is exemplary — the 563 HP, twinturbocharged, 6.75-liter V-12 can motivate this stately vehicle from zero to 60 MPH in just over five seconds. Its top speed is about 155 MPH. Many people today think of Rolls-Royces, and especially Phantoms, as the wheels of cruising “boulevardiers” of the first order, but these cars can go, stop, and … wait for it … handle well, especially as their suspension systems are so sophisticated. They have rear-wheel steering, which makes the car surprisingly maneuverable, even when parking, and adds to the élan when driving at higher speeds.
High-tech features include the GPS system, which analyzes the location of the car as well as the speed in order to assist with smooth gear changes. Also, the Phantom’s camera system predicts the adjustments necessary to provide the most comfortable ride, as it can adjust spring rates, the suspension dampers, and even the active anti-roll bars. The amount of technology in the Phantom is both impressive and far beyond what one would find in most other vehicles.
The base price of the new Phantom is $475,000, but “mine” was so tricked out that the sticker price ended up being $628,300. What was added? An “iced bonnet” (satin-finished hood), special pinstriping, veneered fold-down picnic tables in back, a champagne refrigerator accessible from the rear seats, 22-inch forged rims, and more. In “Iguazu blue” with black wheels, it was stunning.
I loved my time with this Phantom. Even on short trips, it was a delight to be coddled, comforted, and luxuriated in the car’s cocoon-like environment. The seats are both supportive and supremely comfortable; the heating and air conditioning system is efficient and very unobtrusive; and the sound system is terrific. Merging onto the freeway certainly is no challenge, and cruising at higher speeds all day is not the least bit tiring.
Rolls-Royce co-founder Henry Royce is often credited with creating the motto for the company: “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it.” Sir Henry, you would be proud of the Phantom created by the company that you helped build over a century ago.

THOSE FAMILIAR WITH AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY WILL TELL YOU THAT Wilhelm Maybach was a very talented engine designer who went on to create great things during his lifetime (mid-1800s until 1929). His engines (some developed with Gottlieb Daimler) powered boats, automobiles, and even Zeppelins (the rigid “blimps” of the past). In current times, the name will be remembered as the ultra-luxury sub-brand that Mercedes-Benz debuted about 20 years ago. Those cars did not sell well, so the name and sub-brand were retired in 2013. The name was resurrected a few years later, and today it is used on the nameplate of the parent brand’s most elegant machines: the MercedesMaybach S 580 and S 680 and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS luxury SUV.
The Mercedes-Maybach is similar to the Mercedes S 580, though it is longer, more powerful, faster, and more expensive. The Maybach S 580 has a twinturbo, 4-liter V-8 engine assisted by an electric motor, with a combined 496 HP. The base price is $184,900. On the other hand, the S 680 sports a V-12 motor pumping out 621 HP and a base price of $229,000.
“My” Mercedes-Maybach was an S 580 painted in a luxurious two-tone of onyx black below “Kalahari gold” above the beltline and on the roof. I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the color when I read what I was getting, but in person, it is gorgeous. Offset by 21-inch “Champagne Flute” wheels ($1,300), the car has a great stance and is a real eye-catcher, especially as it is about 7 inches longer than the standard body on the S class. Other notable options on my S 580 were special aluminum and walnut interior trim ($3,200); special
champagne flutes with their own holder inside the trunk’s wine refrigerator (accessible from the back seat), a $3,200 option; and special leather seating ($8,000). All told, the $184,900 base price rose to $231,100 on my Maybach.
Due to its increased weight (over 5,200 pounds for the S 580 compared to 4,775 pounds for the standard S-class), the Maybach has the coveted ride that only a heavy car can achieve, since mass is so effecti ve at smoothing out the bumpy rides most cars experience on roads with rougher surfaces.
But don’t assume that the smooth ride and extreme comfort lead to a hohum performance, as the Maybach has the chops, too. The 0-60 MPH time is 4.7 seconds, and the top speed is 155 MPH. The car handles well, too, in a way that belies its heft, thanks to Mercedes-Benz’s well-known ability to create suspensions that are at once supple and high performance.
Driving the Maybach (which, by the way, is pronounced “my-bach”) is a pleasure. Acceleration is sharp and responsive; the ride is smooth and quiet; the sound of the engine is subdued but pleasant; and the driver’s comfort is terrific. The sound system is great, too, no doubt assisted by the copious amount of insulation and other sound-deadening technology that keep the mechanical noises at bay.
Coupling an attractive design with outstanding performance and a beautiful and commodious interior, for the Mercedes-Maybach S 580, it’s clear that the second time is a charm.

In light of our envy of all who have picture-perfect skin, we decided to run to our Haute Beauty skin experts to find out how they have nurtured their dry, oily, or combination skin so that it’s at its very prime.

Skin type: Oily, acne-prone skin
Trick to glowing skin: My favorite trick for getting skin to glow [is] frequent low-downtime laser procedures. I love to rotate a combination of “baby Fraxel,” Laser Genesis, and Hollywood peel treatments on a monthly basis. Each of these targets the skin in a unique way to improve the quality of your skin with very little downtime.
Products used: I love using CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, and La Roche-Posay makes a great moisturizer for oily skin.
Products avoided: Thicker ointments tend to give me more breakouts.

Skin type: Dry skin
Trick to glowing skin: The one thing I do for my skin when it needs a pick-me-up is a Laser Genesis treatment. It just makes my skin glow! A 1064nm laser, it’s safe for my skin type and has no downtime. The energy from the laser smooths out texture, plumps my skin to reduce pore size, and stimulates collagen production long term. It’s one of my favorite things to do before an event and as monthly maintenance. It’s cliche, but cliche for a reason. Diet and sleep affect our skin so much! If I eat clean, with lots of vita min C in my diet, get a sweat session three times a week, and sleep well, my skin is clear and glowing. When I am not doing these things, my skin is sallow and lifeless, despite all the creams! A healthy lifestyle is an essential foundation for healthy skin.
Products used: What works for me is adjusting my routine based on weather, stress, and lifestyle. I use gentle cleansers — my favorite is CeraVe Hydrating — and Skin Medicinals compounded tretinoin cream three times a week. My skin stays happy with glycolic acid for exfoliation a few times a week and a monthly Laser Genesis treatment.
Products avoided: I have to be careful with the [number] of acids I incorporate into my routine. Too many AHAs [alpha hydroxy acids], plus ascorbic acid, plus tretinoin, will give me irritation. What makes me break out is peptide creams! I haven’t found a formula that agrees with my skin for some reason.

Skin type: Dry skin
Trick to glowing skin: Skin care is a strong passion of mine, and I find following a routine to be the key to my healthy skin. I try to avoid dairy and coffee throughout the day, as I noticed that it can at times cause an acne breakout. My evening routine consists of removing makeup with micellar water and washing my face with a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil. I then apply tretinoin to my face every night at bedtime. Tretinoin is an important part of my skin care routine, as it encourages cell turnover and reduces acne scars and fine lines.
Products used: My skin care routine consists of waking up and using my sodium sulfacetamide (prescription sulfur) cleanser. I then use my SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF, which is a triple-antioxidant serum that protects the skin from environmental damage. I have noticed with the phloretin, my skin tone and texture have improved significantly. I then pat dry my face and apply my La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer. This moisturizer works best for me, as it has ceramides. I believe the most important ingredient in a moisturizer is ceramides. Ceramides function to create a sheath of protection or a barrier to prevent permeability. With this action, ceramides are beneficial for your skin care because of their ability to lock moisture into the skin, preventing dryness and irritation. Moreover, ceramides in your skin care products can also help in protecting your skin from environmental damage. Since ceramides are moisture locking, they can boost skin

hydration and can even have anti-aging effects. I then apply EltaMD UV Clear sunscreen and touch up every three to four hours.
Products avoided: My least favorite skin care product is benzoyl peroxide because it can be very irritating and burn if the percentage is too high or if it’s left too long on the skin. It can also ruin clothing. I don’t mind it as a cleanser, though.
DR. BERTHA BAUM | MIAMI, FL
Skin type: Sensitive, combination skin (oily on the T-zone and dry in surrounding areas), prone to rosacea
Trick to glowing skin: I like to stick with a skin care routine that is tailored for my skin based on the environment and on my actual skin type during that time. For glow, I love to use glycolic acid two times weekly, retinol nightly or as tolerated, and ingredients such as azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, and niacinamide, which give me brightening. These peptides will make my lines less noticeable. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant that I use every morning. My No. 1 friend for long-term glow is sunscreen. I personally prefer tinted mineral sunscreen, but any sunscreen that works well on your skin and with your lifestyle is what matters.
Products used: Most products for hydration work well. Fragrancefree is a must with my skin care products. I look for noncomedogenic products as well since I break out easily.
Products avoided: Chemical sunscreen tends to [break me out]. Certain types are worse than others, and that’s why I stick with mineral sunscreens on a daily basis. I have some chemical sunscreens that work well with my skin; those are the ones I use for my body and my face when I don’t have mineral sunscreen available.
DR. ELLEN BUROV | NEW YORK, NY
Skin type: Dry skin
Trick to glowing skin: There are a few tricks that I like for any skin: a good night’s sleep, good skin care routine, and sun avoidance. I don’t like soapy cleansers, and I don’t like to exfoliate too much since my skin is dry for the most part and is very sensitive. Too much cleansing and exfoliation disrupt the skin barrier and damage my skin.
Products used: A good moisturizer. I like “high-tech” moisturizers with modern anti-aging ingredients such as growth factors, peptides, green algae, and hyaluronic acid.
Products avoided: I usually don’t use gel-like products for my skin that don’t get absorbed well. I don’t like heavy, thick sunscreens. I can’t use any irritating products containing AHA/BHA [beta-hydroxy acid] in higher concentrations. If I need something like that, I would use it in a very low concentration to avoid any irritation. My preference is phytic acid since it’s much less irritating with less downtime.

Art Basel Miami Beach is known to be one of the most intense weeks here in the 305, which is why we at Haute Beauty decided to use our experts and wellness powers to our advantage by hosting the first-ever Haute Beauty Wellness Day at the beautiful Showfields Miami space on December 1, 2022.
Wellness Day began with attendees heading straight to their Atman Spirit mats for a 30-minute class by the beautiful Alexis Gulliver, certified yoga instructor and developer of the ALIVE method. While guests were taking big inhales and exhales, flowing into position, and being surrounded by gratitude, our Haute Beauty expert and celebrity esthetician Lana Mar of Face Fit Bar was upstairs working on her facial fitness, literally. A unique concept, Face Fit Bar gives you a natural facelift without fillers or surgery. Mar and her team of estheticians provided each guest with 20-minute facial-fitness sessions, adding to the Zen of the day.
As the line of people grew and wellness day attendees awaited their turn to glow, guests socialized among themselves and enjoyed the other offerings available to them.
On tap in the drink department were Odyssey Elixir’s flavorful energy and focus drinks, Wölffer Estate’s Summer in a Bottle wine, Dr Smood’s refreshing cold-pressed juices, OTO CBD-infused mocktails, and Margs sparkling margaritas infused with real tequila and all-natural ingredients. While guests enjoyed their beverages, Gussi Hair’s new Mane Squeeze flat iron was also being put to use. Whether you were looking to straighten your hair, curl it, or give it a beachy look, the on-site hairstylist was ready to give you the glam you deserved.
For those who couldn’t make it to the day’s first yoga session, Gulliver began another session that flowed directly into a gorgeous sound healing experience by Emilia Garth.

FROM CELEBRATING SOME OF THE MOST FAMED ARTISTS IN THE world to accommodating lavish extravaganzas, December’s Art Basel Miami Beach was a week to remember. On December 1, 2022, Ford Models hosted its 75th Anniversary Gala alongside renowned artist Romero Britto and luxury brand Places.co. This ultimate Art Basel soiree took place at the vibrant Britto Palace, the artist’s 60,000-square-foot headquarters (located in the heart of Miami) where he often hosts celebrities, designers, innovators, and art patrons. Upon arrival, guests were greeted with premium cocktails before fully immersing themselves in the wonderful world of Britto, Ford Models, and Places.co. Throughout the evening, models showed off bespoke pieces from Britto’s clothing line. A special artwork by Britto exclusively curated for Ford Models was presented to the modeling agency’s CEO, Decio Restelli Ribeiro, and Katie Ford, former agency CEO and daughter of Eileen Ford and Gerard William “Jerry” Ford, who created the agency over 75 years ago. The evening was one of the highlights of Art Basel Miami Beach, and guests toasted many more years of Ford Models to come. Other notable attendees included Jonathan Cheban (Foodgod), Haute Media Group CEO Kamal Hotchandani, Dr. Lucas Vidal, Stefano Gabbana, Lisa Hochstein, Mike Rodriguez, and more.

The evening was nothing short of unforgettable with compliments of partners The Macallan, XO jets, and Places.co. Jeff Koons’ highly anticipated Moon Phases project takes art where it’s never been before, honoring icons of the past and present with projections on the moon. So it’s no coincidence that Koons’ special night was just as stellar. Guests enjoyed the flavorful stylings of The Macallan with a curation of luxurious drinks featuring the label’s fine 12-year-old Double Cask whiskey. From elevated classics like the Copper Old-Fashioned to effervescent innovations such as the Garden of Legacy with lemon, honey, and champagne, attendees savored the artful evening with a variety of creative cocktails. The crown jewel of the celebration was a collaborative artwork gifted to Koons commemorating his roots and saluting his future as one of the world’s most lauded creatives. A graffiti-style design imagined by clothing label Crime by Design was featured on a Venus et Fleur arrangement in Koons’ iconic blue, making the gift a true testament to his electric essence. Meet Rino Cerbone, a Culinary Expert and Part-Time Rock Star

“NO F**CKS GIVEN” ARE THE THREE WORDS THAT CULINARY EXPERT AND PART-TIME ROCK STAR Rino Cerbone lives by. And after speaking with the chef and pioneer of Fort Lauderdale restaurant Heritage, we understand why this motto has kept him at the top of the culinary pyramid.
Backtracking to the early stages of his era, Cerbone had always had food in mind. Raised in the family business, he always knew that opening a restaurant was going to happen. “This was always the plan. Music was a bonus. I am fortunate to have two plan A’s that were equally as important as the other,” says Cerbone. “Whether it was peeling potatoes or carrots, I kept my eye on everything. I wanted to know the ins and outs of the business, and getting to be by my dad’s side was a plus.” After years spent being part of a father-and-son duo, Cerbone set out to start his own journey ― one that he knew wasn’t a decision but a transition.
Now his restaurant isn’t your regular hot spot. There truly are no f**cks given. To create a chef-driven environment filled with culture, Cerbone focuses on three things: that the menu is what he wants, the music is what he wants to play, and the team that works around him is made up of people whom he loves to spend time with outside of opening hours. “If I am going to hang around you, I have to like who I spend time with,” he says.
Heritage’s vibe is epic and its menu is delicious, and both are authentic to Cerbone. And boy, does the small but delicious menu break the scale.
We know this was a tough question to throw his way, but we had to find out what the culinary expert’s favorite menu item was, and honestly, it was exactly what we expected. “I love them all. I am a pizza fanatic, but my Bolognese, I’ve heard it’s life-changing,” Cerbone says. In fact, the Bolognese — just like the other menu items — combines culinary elements from his mother’s hometown of Sicily, Italy, and his father’s hometown of Naples, Italy, hence the name Heritage. Cerbone took the oldest techniques from both sides and combined the two.
Food is in Cerbone’s blood, and Heritage, the casual but mystic fine-dining hub, proves it. He’s excited to create more concepts and expand his horizons for years to come. “You need to keep guests excited. It is all about synergy and energy,” he says. Cerbone didn’t reinvent the wheel; he simply used it to his advantage, set the standard, and created a dining spot like no other.
