Kate Mara has always had a special bond with dogs. The actress’ two Boston terriers, Bruno and Lucius, are her constant companions. Even when working, she travels with her furry mascots who then accompany her to set. So when the script for the recently released film, Megan Leavey, landed in Mara’s hands, it was a no-brainer―she knew she had to play the title role. The movie tells the real-life story of a United States Marine corporal and member of the military’s canine team. Alongside German shepherd Rex, Megan Leavey served over 100 missions in Iraq, saving countless lives. However, her relationship with Rex is what saved her own life; he taught her how to love and provided her with a purpose. Although Leavey was initially forced to clean out kennels as punishment, when she learned that the dogs and their handlers were heading to Iraq to sniff out bombs, weapons and improvised explosive devices, Leavey found a new calling. The film chronicles her journey—including the four-year-long fight she underwent to earn custody of Rex after they were both injured by a blast. “I knew I wanted to do it when I read the script. It was pretty simple,” Mara remembers. “I thought it was a really important story to tell, and I worked with the producer a very long time ago, so it was an obvious choice for me. I was just very moved by it, and I’m excited that it hasn’t been told before.”

Our cover star is one of Hollywood’s up-and-coming leading ladies whose portrayal of real-life Marine Megan Leavey (in the film of the same name) is moving, authentic, and inspirational. You’ll play with puppies, soak in vitamin-rich waters, and return back to the Bay feeling refreshed and relaxed. What else can you do this July and August? Walk into Nightbird for a memorable meal or enjoy a waffle while listening to a renowned musician at the Outside Lands music festival. There’s all that and more in this issue. We welcome you to pour a glass of wine, sit back, and wallow in all things haute. Cheers!

INSIDE THE SHATTER SUMMIT, FEATURING THE BAY AREA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN Many of the region’s most distinguished women gathered on May 9 at The Battery for a talk summit hosted by venture capitalist Shelly Kapoor Collins and the Shatter Fund. The event was a daylong networking extravaganza filled with several discussion panels, lunch, and a rooftop cocktail party. Kapoor Collins is a prominent figure in Silicon Valley who
believes that women can change the economy for the better—if they are given more leadership, CEO, and founder roles. Her firm focuses on supporting female-driven ideas. The underlying topic of the summit was that if the face of investing is shifted to be more female-centric, the economy will transform as well. Speakers included Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Linnea Roberts, Kara Goldin, Alison Pincus, Dave Morin, and Tamara Mellon.
MAJOR OBSESSIONS LAUNCHES LUXE SECOND COLLECTION OF CLOTHING For the second season of Major Obsessions, Sonya Molodetskaya’s passion project with partner and seamstress, Altana Danzhalova, the duo created roughly 40 looks that are available for special order now on the brand’s website. Never one to do things half-heartedly, Molodetskaya debuted the Spring/ Summer 2017 collection of Major Obsessions at a fabulous, over-the-top fashion show inspired by the clothing presentations she frequents in Paris. Model after model paraded down a long, winding runway at the historic Hibernia Bank on the corner of Jones and Market Streets.

HOTEL VIA NOW OPEN IN SOUTH BEACH Although downtown San Francisco is filled with hotels, there are few luxurious accommodations in the South Beach neighborhood. However, this changed in mid-June when the Hotel VIA opened at 138 King Street. The 12-story hotel is directly across the street from AT&T Park and has 159 rooms equipped with forward thinking technology. State-of-the-art room amenities include the fastest internet possible. The coolest thing about the hotel? The 12th-floor rooftop lounge.
IN CONVERSATION WITH MARISSA MAYER AND JENNIFER SIEBEL NEWSOM The Representation Project, Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s non-profit, hosted a breakfast conversation with Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer. The event was at the Marin Art and Garden Center and featured a fascinating conversation between the two blonde powerhouses. The Representation Project’s goal is to create a world free of social injustices and gender stereotypes—they seek to represent everyone no matter their race, sex, religion, and background. At the breakfast, Siebel Newsom interviewed Mayer with questions that focused on being a working mother in a position of power. THE MOST MAGNIFICENT SPAS Whether you want a deep tissue massage or a cleansing dermaplane facial, there is no shortage of luxe spas in SF that offer these treatments. In fact, there is an ideal spa for every beauty need. Want to soak in a hot tub and indulge in delicious Japanese food? Head to Onsen. Need a spa experience outside of San Francisco? Spend an afternoon at the Sense Spa at the Rosewood Sand Hill. If you’re looking for a stellar all-around spa experience, you can’t go wrong with one of our favorite places, such as Spa Radiance, Remede at the St. Regis or Serenity MedSpa.

TIME-HONORED TRADITIONS CELEBRATING THE PRANCING HORSE What happens when Ferrari designs a watch to celebrate its 70th anniversary and Hublot makes it? The luxury sports car brand uses the same creative process as it does when designing one of its own models. A team headed by Ferrari’s design chief Flavio Manzoni was able to melt the DNA of both marques this time in an unprecedented way to create the Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph. The result is nothing less than a high-tech, Haute Horlogerie sports car for the wrist, with the ultimate balance between functional design and technical beauty.

It does so quickly, hitting 60 mph in under four seconds, and it holds the lap record for a production four-door sedan at Germany’s fabled Nürburgring race track (7:32 minutes). Overall, it’s a ton of fun to drive a car that allows an adjustment to engine mapping (how fast the throttle responds), suspension firmness, and exhaust note. The car speaks Italian like a big lady with a shield and a spear, so you better pay attention. And then there’s the Hellcat. Not much left to the imagination here—the snarling, sabre-tooth feline head on the front fender is a pretty good clue that you’re in for something rough and wild. (A brief side note: the Dodge Demon has just been announced, and—for those for whom 707 horsepower is a good starting point—your ride is on the way. This mesmerizing caliber is fitted with a skeletonized micro-rotor and features a power reserve of 60 hours. Each color is also limited to only 88 pieces. No wonder it makes such a good companion on a road trip—preferably a long one in an exciting car! And amidst such a breathtaking trip, our Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirellis told us it was time for lunch. The air was perfumed with a faint lavender scent as we explored the Provence afterwards, a beautiful part of France, with the wind going through our hair. It is incredible how many impressive, imposing, but—most of all—diverse landscapes France has to offer only hours apart by car. After leaving for the Gorges Du Verdon, also known as France’s Grand Canyon, we went on to the Côte D’Azur. Finally, our group arrived just in time for the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the highlights of the year in the principality. We got to stop and admire other people’s driving at that point and see Sebastian Vettel win the Grand Prix, with teammate Kimi Raikkonen coming in second. What a great conclusion to the drive of a lifetime!

MEET ME AT THE MART The hottest shopping center in the North Bay? The Marin Country Mart. With a quaint name like the Marin Country Mart, one might think that the Larkspur Landing shopping center is filled with farm-inspired stores. However, that’s not the case at this luxe boutique shopping mecca. The Marin Country Mart is the chicest place to shop in Marin County. Real Estate developer James Rosenfield bought the property in 2009 and has, in just seven short years, transformed it into a much loved community space and mini village. The center is one of three marts in Rosenfield’s portfolio, with the Brentwood Country Mart in Los Angeles the flagship space. All of the marts have a barbershop, post office, ice cream parlor, shoe repair, and communal outdoor dining space—this is because Rosenfield wants them to have an old-fashioned vibe. When building out the Marin retail space, Rosenfield studied old images of Larkspur Landing and tried to recreate what he saw in the photos. There are about 20 retail shops, packed into close quarters, a handful of upscale food retailers, a signature restaurant, a spa, yoga studio and gym. Interesting programming—especially during the summer months—makes the Country Mart more than a destination for shopping. On Wednesday nights, there is a double feature movie with one film geared toward kids and a second Wes Anderson movie for adults. Friday nights,

about a year ago. By now the lovely eatery has perfected its nightly service. Chef and owner Kim Alter is a David Kinch and Daniel Patterson protégé and Nightbird is her first solo project. It took two years to convert the previous space into what it is today, but it was worth the wait. When you walk into Nightbird, it’s as if you’re stepping into Alter’s own home. There is an incredibly cozy vibe to the space. It’s small—only 38 seats—but thanks to the minimal decor, it feels spacious and welcoming. The floors are chestnut-colored wood, the walls are painted in a unique ombre design, white porcelain hanging lamps look like egg shells, and the blue velvet chairs are plush and comfortable. Alter has thought about every detail—even the unisex bathrooms are memorable with sexy gold foil walls and sumptuous scented candles. She even added a tiny eight-chair cocktail bar, the Linden Room, to serve as a waiting space for the restaurant. Bar manager Drew Majoulet’s libations are whimsical, innovative, and potent. As for Nightbird’s cuisine, the menu features five courses along with delightful surprises between each course. The amuse bouche has become Alter’s signature dish—it’s a quail

So when the script for the recently released film, Megan Leavey, landed in Mara’s hands, it was a no-brainer: she knew she had to play the title role. The movie tells the real-life story of a United States marine corporal and member of the military’s canine team, who—alongside German shepherd Rex—served over 100 missions in Iraq, saving countless lives. However, her relationship with Rex is what saved her own life; he taught her how to love and provided her with a purpose. Despite being initially forced to clean out kennels as punishment, when she learned that the dogs and their handlers were heading to Iraq to sniff out bombs, weapons and improvised explosive devices, Leavey found a new calling. Now, viewers can see Leavey’s journey chronicled on the big screen—including the four-year-long fight she underwent to earn custody of Rex after they were both injured by a blast.

Like Leavey, Mara finds comfort in her connection with dogs, so she was eager to meet Varko, too, who primarily played the role of Rex in the film. “I usually bring my dogs to work whenever I’m on a location… because they make me feel grounded and safe in a lot of ways. There’s a sort of comfort I think they bring, that animals in general bring to people, and so when you have this amazing animal that is by your side the entire time—I mean, it’s a very special experience.” She says with her signature frank tone. “We bonded very quickly and, when I didn’t have scenes with him, I truly missed it. I missed having [the multiple dogs playing Rex] in my space.” Although there were stand-ins, Varko was in almost all of Mara’s scenes and, in many cases, she simply had to interact with him. Her performance is honest, authentic and heartfelt. “It was totally unique and really joyful and amazing, and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced going to work.” Although she has played her fair share of complicated characters, something about Leavey was different. The character is multifaceted—she has a deadbeat mom, lost her best friend to a drug overdose, and returns from Iraq with post-traumatic stress disorder—and filming was an emotional experience for the 34-year-old actress. “The whole thing was really intense. People would think that it would’ve been maybe the war scenes—which def-

I had been… going be-

It’s a war film that features a female lead. Zero Dark Thirty, Courage Under Fire, Camp X-Ray… the pictures that accurately and au-

The Mara sisters traveled there to visit the chimps and raise awareness for the cause and, in late May, their hard work paid off: the Blood Center came to an agreement with the Humane Society, which will take responsibility for the chimpanzees, by providing $6 million to the organization to help cover the costs of the animals’ care. Mara’s love of animals makes her a natural vegan who promotes plantbased diets and Meatless Mondays. “I read this book called The Beauty Detox Solution about five or six years ago. This nutritionist, Kimberly Snyder, wrote it and I was actually introduced to it by my friend Jenna Dewan-Tatum… It tells you a lot about food combining and how our bodies digest, and what our bodies are meant to digest, and how it affects us from the inside out.” Mara was a vegetarian on and off before the book, but reading it made her become more aware of how dietary decisions affect the body. “Knowing why my body was reacting in certain ways to dairy and that kind of thing, that’s what made me really become… a conscious eater. Then, my love of animals and learning about how eating meat is actually really detrimental to our environment. All of

Barrymore’s label currently consists of three different types of wine: a Pinot Grigio, a rosé of Pinot Noir, and a red blend of Pinot Noir with grapes sourced along the Central Coast. Barrymore Wines is a partnership with Jackson Family Wines―the grape-growing empire founded by Jess Jackson in Sonoma County in 1982―produced under its Carmel Road label, whose vineyards are located in Southern Monterey County. Carmel Road Winery stood out because it’s a family-operated business that distributes wine nationally. Barrymore explains the partnership like this: “It was sort of destiny in the way the Carmel Road team and I wanted [the same thing]. I said, ‘Can we stick with Pinot Grigio? That’s what I know and so I’d like to start with that and then continue to learn along the way.” Carmel Road believed the best place to make it was Monterey, so they introduced her to Kato, the new winemaker at the winery. “It was a great education for me. Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival has always been a truly SF affair. Last year over 210,000 people flooded Golden Gate Park for the three-day music, comedy, food, and beverage extravaganza. More than 80 different artists performed on five stages. 75 local Bay Area food vendors, 30 breweries, and 40 wineries served the massive crowd delectable eats and drinks including grilled cheese sandwiches, steamed bao, pork belly burgers, Edna Valley Chardonnay, and watermelon Hefeweizen. 4800 bottles of wine were consumed and 8000 oysters shucked. From these numbers, it’s apparent that Outside Lands isn’t your typical music festival. Food and drink play a tremendous part in the experience—and so does giving back to the community. 91 percent of the waste creat-

marketing elements to it because you were able to sort of play off this 'lands' concept in a way that allowed us to extend the brand to different elements and activities.” Beer Lands, Wine Lands, Cheese Lands—the festival has countless specific areas whose names are a play on Outside Lands. Over the past nine years, the festival has grown to become an indulgent experience for all types of people. “It went from music, food, and wine, to more elaborate, extravagant. You have Choco Lands where you have these amazing desserts. Everything has become a little bit more extreme from where it started. It's like a good idea, and then, it became an amazing experience, overall,” Madeira says. Where else can you twerk to Odesza and then go get a freshfried beignet and a glass of Sonoma rosé? Comedy has become a larger addition to Outside Lands with a bigger comedy tent being added for this August’s event. Also new this year: restaurateur Anna Weinberg (Marlowe, Park Tavern) has been tapped to curate the food lineup. “She's helping manage—just with her insight in the restaurant business that we don't have, her knowledge and her relationships. We really wanted her to oversee. And her taste, she has the most outstanding taste when it comes to food, and knowing food that's up and coming,” Madeira says of the partnership. “We basically asked her to jump on board to be able to oversee and create this fresh exchange of ideas when it comes to how the restaurants get involved, and how they're involved even outside of the festival ground. Like how they support Outside Lands, and how we make this cohesive, fun experience with the restaurants that we work with.” New restaurants include Alba Ray’s, Cheese Steak Shop, Tartine Manufactory, Izakaya Sozai, Little Star Pizza, and Weinberg’s Marlowe. The culinary aspect is what makes Outside Lands a destination for foodies and sets it apart from other fests like Coachella—and even the VIP section, which quickly sells out each year, features its own special food vendors. “We started the second wave of festivals that came along. A lot of the festivals didn't make it. l
A variety of food vendors line the grassy knoll that surrounds the main stage.
TIPS FOR NAVIGATING OUTSIDE LANDS
• Parking around Golden Gate Park is incredibly limited and public transportation is recommended for getting to and from the festival. A free bike valet is open from 10 a.m. to midnight, and free shuttle buses back downtown/to Civic Center Plaza line up along Fulton Street each night.
• Every day the gates open at 11 a.m. with musical acts starting at 12 noon. The music ends around 10 p.m.
• Tickets are wristbands that can be preloaded with money for purchasing alcohol and food at the
• Outside Lands has its own mobile app where festival goers can plan out their days and access a map of the different experiences.
• San Francisco can be very chilly in August. Warm layers are recommended.
• Refillable water stations are located throughout the festival and at Eco Lands, the social conscious community within the festival that provides an education forum for sustainability. It also has a farmers’ market! y

So, we feel very blessed for doing well and selling out,” Madeira says. “It takes a while to get there, but I think that people and promoters definitely see that this is what people want. They want to go to some place where they can get the best of the best. Whether they can get the wine, or go see a famous comedian, and then, just have laughs because there's some crazy mixologist or have a sampling of all these different kinds of bacon, Continuing to have a heritage band, like this year’s The Who to attract an older crowd, is another thing that makes Outside Lands distinctive. Previous vintage acts include Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. The goal is to carry the festival on, growing it, for the next ten years—and to make it an integral part of San Francisco’s fabric. “The idea is that we basically formed something that's going to be ingrained in the San Francisco Bay Area community and is something that people get excited for and want to be a part of every year,” Madeira pauses before elaborating. “Our focus is on the attendees, and the bands, and the experience that we provide. That's first and foremost. Just to see people have so much fun. Having all these amazing artists in one place. It's a very energetic crowd that's really happy to be there—that’s why it's a favorite weekend.”

NOT-TO-BE-MISSED CULINARY DELIGHTS More than 10 food trucks will be on hand serving everything from lamb sliders to fresh cracked Thai coconuts. The original Del Popolo, a shipping container transformed into an impressive pizza oven and kitchen, is serving Margherita pizzas and salumi pizzas. Woodhouse Fish Co. returns for its seventh year in a row with a dedicated area devoted to all things seafood. Order raw and barbecued oysters, lobster rolls, and clam chowder bread bowls. Perhaps, the most buzzed-about dish is Rich Table’s porcini doughnuts with Raclette cheese, now in its fifth year. “It’s crazy to be able to dance with Metallica and Lorde while eating porcini doughnuts from Rich Table, but that’s exactly what we’ll be doing at Outside Lands,” Weinberg says. Boss Ladies
MEET THE TOP TEN MOST SIGNIFICANT FEMALE MOVERS AND SHAKERS IN THE BAY AREA BY KATIE SWEENEY
THE BAY AREA HAS NO SHORTAGE OF POWERFUL FEMALES IN INFLUENTIAL LEADERSHIP ROLES. NAMES like Sheryl Sandberg, Meg Whitman, Nancy Pelosi, and Dianne Feinstein instantly come to mind. Oakland native Kamala Harris—who has become a star in the recent Senate hearings—is another woman who we respect and admire. In terms of food and philanthropy, you’ve probably heard of Dominique Crenn, the only female chef in the nation whose restaurant has two Michelin stars, and Dede Wilsey, SF’s patron saint who helped rebuild the Fine Art Museums. But who are the wonder women you might not be as familiar with? Who are the tastemakers and dealmakers defining and changing the Bay Area right now, at this very moment? Allow us to introduce you to them. The following ten ladies, listed in alphabetical order, are behind the scenes making stuff happen. Get to know them here and prepare to see their names everywhere in the near future.

ALLISON SPEER The PR Maven
When luxury fashion houses and global interior designers need to throw an event in San Francisco, they turn to public relations guru, Allison Speer. In SF, her carefully curated guest list, which is filled with tech titans and old school billionaires (many of whom are her close friends), is the creme de la creme. Speer worked as Giorgio Armani’s West Coast director of events before starting her own company 16 years ago. She hasn’t looked back and has enjoyed meeting amazing people along the way. “Last year I got to work with Domenico Dolce,” Speer says. “Meeting an iconic designer like that makes any challenge on a project well worth the experience.” The Presidio Heights resident and mother to two adorable mini dachshunds says that running your own business is challenging. That’s why it’s crucial to have “great women who work for me that support me in every way possible.” Speer is an advocate for the community and has been a trustee at California Pacific Medical Center Hospital for the last five years, where she is working hard to help fundraise for the new campus which is set to open on Van Ness in 2020.
AYESHA CURRY The Culinary Ingenue
Thanks to his legendary shooting skills, Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is a name that’s known in most places now. Although she’s not a sports star, his wife, Ayesha, is well on her way to becoming a household name too. The 28-year old East Bay resident is cooking up a career in the food industry. The mother of two has a cookbook, The Seasoned Life, an instructional cooking show where she teaches viewers recipes while giving them a glimpse of her glamorous life on the Food Network—it’s called Ayesha’s

Homemade, and she recently appeared as a culinary star at BottleRock Napa Valley. Her pop-up restaurant, International Smoke, in collaboration with chef Michael Mina and the Mina Test Kitchen will become its own stand alone concept. International Smoke is taking over the RN74 space in the Millennium Tower later this year. Curry also makes olive oil, promotes a line of ready-made soups, and has her own meal kit delivery service, Homemade, that focuses on fast and easy family dinners.
“Do work that is rewarding and follow your instinct.” — Allison Speer
“I’ve made it a point to be transparent on my social media and in everything that I present. I never want anyone to think that I’m too fluffy or too perfect. It’s not the kind of message I’m sending out.” — Ayesha Curry 87
CLAUDIA ALTMAN-SIEGEL The Art Impresario
In 2007, Claudia Altman-Siegel quit her job in New York, broke up with her boyfriend, put everything she owned in storage, and headed to San Francisco. She slept on the floor in her sister’s apartment for nine months before finding her own place. A year later, in 2009, she opened her namesake gallery, where she shows some of the best contemporary artists around, and got engaged in the same weekend. She explains the experience like this: “I knew that my life before wasn’t going in the direction I wanted it to, so I gave up everything and started over. That exercise in having nothing allowed me to rebuild my life from scratch in a way that is healthier and more productive than anything I had before.” Now less than ten years later, she is one of the most inspiring

gallery owners in the Bay Area. Last fall, she moved from 49 Geary Street—an address known for being home to many famous galleries—to the newly built Minnesota Street Project, into a 5,000-square-foot space that she designed herself. “When I opened the gallery in 2009, I imagined being in a space like this some day and I managed to accomplish it much faster than I anticipated,” she says. Not only is she a champion of contemporary art—two of her artists (Liam Everett and KRM Mooney) have solo shows at SFMOMA this summer—she’s also a champion of the SF art community. “It’s a small scene so we have to be supportive of it. The more we are excited about it locally, the more the rest of the world will start to pay attention.”
DR. CAROLYN CHANG The Miracle Worker
Dr. Carolyn Chang believes that inner beauty comes from outer beauty. As

one of San Francisco’s most sought-after plastic surgeons, she’s made it her life’s work to help women feel better about themselves. Chang specializes in cosmetic surgery and is currently the vice chairman of plastic surgery at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC). “Sometimes inner beauty can come from outer beauty,” Chang explains. “What I mean is that when we take pride in our appearance, we are taking care of ourselves. We feel good about ourselves and are more confident and positive.” Chang has overcome many challenges to get where she is today—both professionally and personally. “When I was in residency and in the early part of my career, most plastic surgeons, and certainly most surgeons in general were men,” she says of being a female in a peers and mentors, was always in the back of my mind. Learning to negotiate gender dynamics was important to my success.” After her first daughter died of a rare cancer at age two, she recommitted herself to supporting the children’s programs and services at CPMC and the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. “I am championing this cause and am seeing positive programs being developed in these institutions.”

ERIN SAWYER The STEM Warrior
With a statuesque frame, long blonde hair, and megawatt smile, Erin Sawyer could be mistaken for a movie star. However, she’s not an actress, she’s a mechanical engineer—one who is single-handedly changing the way female engineers are seen in society. “My motto is #ILookLikeAnEngineer,” she says. “The hashtag, originally coined by Isis Wenger in 2015, helped to redefine our awareness of diversity in tech. By adopting this motto, I am shattering the outdated idea of what an engineer should look like. It’s hugely important to show young women that not only can you be a female engineer, but you can also be feminine and beautiful.” Referring to the acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math, Sawyer says, “I embody the modern face of STEM and prove that women can be beautiful, smart leaders [in these fields].” The automotive and technology executive held a senior position at Telsa for two years before she took on her current role as the vice president of supply chain at Wrightspeed. When she’s not working to reduce areas of highly concentrated energy consumption and pollution, she serves as a role model to the younger generation. Sawyer is on the board of Kids’ Vision, a non-profit that empowers 3rd to 6th grade girls by showing them how Silicon Valley’s tech companies use math and science.
“Don’t be afraid to ask for more responsibility, ask for a promotion, take on new roles, change companies, relocate, start your own business, etc. It’s up to you to be your own advocate and be proactive about what you want!” — Erin Sawyer
JENNIFER SIEBEL NEWSOM The Good Wife
In her late 20s, Jennifer Siebel Newsom wanted to be an actress. After she was told to lie about her age and dumb down her Stanford education when auditioning, she realized firsthand how Hollywood misrepresents women. Siebel Newsom, whose husband is the Lieutenant Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, decided to further investigate the subject. The result was her 2011 documentary, Miss Representation, which explores how the mainstream media portrays women in limited and often disparaging ways. “The media and our culture largely undercuts women leaders,” Siebel Newsom says, “telling us in ways both large and small that our value predominantly lies in our youth, our beauty, and our sexuality, and not in our capacity to lead.” The film turned into a movement and sparked Siebel Newsom to create her nonprofit, the Representation Project, an organization with the goal of a world free of social injustices and gender stereotypes. The Representation Project seeks to represent everyone —no matter their race, sex, religion, or background. Through documentary films, such as Miss Representation and her second movie, The Mask You Live In, Siebel Newsom and her

team are breaking down barriers and putting a spotlight on the narratives that limit boys and girls from reaching their full potential.

MARISSA MAYER The Unemployed CEO Five years ago, Marissa Mayer left Google to become the CEO of Yahoo. She was faced with the difficult task of turning around the floundering internet company. The challenge was virtually impossible, even for the formidable and smart Mayer, and earlier this summer, she resigned from her position. Yahoo was sold to Verizon and Mayer walked away with a $23 million severance package. “It was a long road to get the company to that point but we’re overall happy and excited about it,” she explains. Mayer spent a lot of time focusing on that important transition, saying “there’s been so many twists and turns and curve balls on the way.” It was crucial “to make sure we get it over the threshold.” After everything with the deal was finalized, Mayer summed up her time at both Yahoo and Google, “I’ve been really lucky to be a part of two companies that have changed the world.” At the time of press, her next move remains unknown.
“I think there is too much judgment involved from other women and I think you have to have respect for everyone and the fact that they are going to do it their own way.” — Marissa Mayer
Mary Gonsalves Kinney is the Bay Area’s most hard-working stylist and one to whom many important women (including some on this list!) look for wardrobe decisions. “I work with some amazing people, but I don’t like to talk about it and frankly, can’t a lot of the time,” Gonsalves Kinney says. “I’m proud of the relationship I have developed with each of them and the reputation I have earned as a stylist not only in San Francisco, but beyond. Someone the other day called me the ‘private stylist.’ I like that there’s a bit of mystery in what I do. I usher in the chicness, discreetly.” The mother of three is actually a Sacramento resident, but bases her business in SF. She commutes on a daily basis. “I feel it is important to show my children the passion and dedication I have to my work. I love what I do and they can see that when I get up and go to work everyday (in another city, no less!).” Gonsalves Kinney helps promote local designers like Tokyo Gamine and can often be seen hosting fashionable events with designer brands, such as Giorgio Armani and Stella McCartney, boutiques, like Pia the Store, and publications, namely Vogue.

SHELLY KAPOOR COLLINS The Savvy VC
“There are three areas that I am super passionate about: technology, mentoring women, and public service,” venture capitalist Shelly Kapoor Collins says. “I have been lucky enough to fulfill my passion for all of these areas under one umbrella, the Shatter Fund, which I founded to invest in technology companies started by female entrepreneurs to drive innovation in our country and spur gains for our economy.” Kapoor Collins served on Barack Obama’s President’s Council for Women in Business, which allowed her to understand why the country benefits when more women are leaders in business and in technology. In May, Kapoor Collins hosted the inaugural Shatter Summit, a daylong networking extravaganza filled with several discussion panels, lunch, and a rooftop cocktail party. Kara Goldin, Dave Morin, Linnea Roberts, and Tamara Mellon were some of the people who shared their stories at the event, which Kapoor Collins plans to make a quarterly affair. Being authentic is incredibly important to Kapoor Collins, as is giving back. “Don’t forget

those who helped you along the way. Remember to give back, if not to a person who helped you, then to someone else who needs it.”
TINA SHARKEY The Empire Builder
Tina Sharkey is a serial entrepreneur and web disruptor. She cofounded iVillage, was a senior vice president at AOL, created BabyCenter, and started her own global platform, Sherpa Foundry. She is also a mentor and advisor to many start-ups including at Brit + Co., The League, and Pinrose. “I’m proud of the fact that, through whatever happy accident, I ended up as a role model,” Sharkey says. “While I’m incredibly grateful for the impact I’ve been able to have on the industry, whether it’s venture, women in business, or otherwise, what I’m most proud of is the role model I’ve been able to be for my family, especially my two sons. I take the role very seriously and hope I’ve instilled in them the values we’ve signed up for as a family.” Her latest project is a new company, called Brandless, which hopes to bring quality products to the masses at affordable prices. Sharkey believes that values like non-GMO, organic, and sustainable products shouldn’t cost more, and has set out to change the status quo. “I’m especially supportive of organizations that focus on engaging the next generation, developing our youth into global citizens with the social muscle required to move our society forward,” she says.
“Take feedback seriously, not personally. Never get too comfortable. That helps you separate the feedback and hold the understanding that it’s not personal.” — Tina Sharkey
“And not just social muscle, but also the understanding that success is not the only thing that matters—it needs to be carefully balanced with social impact on both a local and global scale.”

THE UNVEILING OF THE ROLLS-ROYCE ‘SWEPTAIL’ The newest and finest motor car in the world When Rolls-Royce unveiled its one-of-a-kind bespoke motor car, the Sweptail, at Villa Balbiano on Lake Como, I was among the 80 lucky guests to be invited to this private event co-hosted by my client, the connoisseur of all things luxury who commissioned the Sweptail, and the CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Torsten Müller-Ötvös. The event was followed by the presentation of the car to the media and public at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este on May 27, 2017. Giles Taylor, director of design at Rolls-Royce, worked with the client for four years to bring the client’s vision of a special RollsRoyce to life. Over $15 million was raised to support local health communities and children’s education. Soul singer Leon Bridges performed at the main event.

The LuxuryBEAT
BY ROSALIA CONNOLLY
Why is Legacy such an innovative move for the company? One of the things that sets Louis XIII apart is the brand’s longstanding commitment to craftsmanship and mastery of time. Each decanter is the life achievement of generations of cellar masters. Legacy is an
“XIIILouis [is]
embodiment of the incredible history, bridging the past and the future. Your current cellar master is the youngest the brand has ever had. Is
the ultimate expression of the mastery of time. It stands as the very definition of luxury lifestyle... a satisfaction so complete and without precedent that it demands to be savored and be rremembered.
his youth an asset? Baptist Loiseau’s youthfulness brings a fresh perspective to our storied brand. For instance, as he works on projecting the brand into the next century, we are considering the impact that climate change could have on vineyards and, ultimately, on Louis XIII. Have you found it challenging for the brand to move into a digital age? Social media was a major component of our strategy for 100 Years: The Movie You Will Never See [a film starring John Malkovich and directed by Robert Rodriguez], an incredible, artistic, creative project, as it gave us the platform to share an inspirational work of art with people around the globe. A separate, but also strong, area of interest is e-retail, as it is an additional channel which makes our clients’ lives easier.
”
What initiatives have you employed as CEO to keep modern relevance, while still managing to sustain the brand’s integrity? Louis XIII has debuted a string of innovative activations, such as the production of 100 Years; a limited-edition masterpiece in collaboration with Hermès, Puiforcat and Saint-Louis called l’Odyssee d’un Roi, which was auctioned for charity; and the opening of the world’s firstever Louis XIII cognac boutique in Beijing.

shows to movie premieres, there is always a reason to celebrate. In a forward-thinking city like Los Angeles, where people are always searching for what’s new and what’s next, Louis XIII provides a chance to slow down, savor and appreciate the luxury of time, and think a century ahead.
OUIS XIII HAS BEEN AN INNOVATIVE, FORWARDthinking brand since its creation by Paul Emile Remy Martin in 1874—yet it is also one that is firmly rooted in history. Connecting this divide was a welcome challenge for
Philippe Farnier, the current chief executive officer of Rémy Cointreau USA and a member of the company’s global Executive Committee. Using the knowledge he gleaned from previous positions at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté and Parfums Christian Dior, Farnier helped to conceive the company’s latest effort, Legacy—a unique limited-edition decanter, hand-signed by the four living cellar masters. Only 500 bottles will be released internationally, each accompanied by an etched plaque displaying its unique identification number. Here, Farnier discusses the evolution of the brand and how it plans on continuing to leave its mark on the spirits industry.
