Or perhaps you know this Emmy, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award-nominated actress from the TV shows Joan of Arcadia or House, M.D. Tamblyn is also, as it happens, the author of three books of poetry and prose: Free Stallion, Bang Ditto and, most recently, the acclaimed best seller Dark Sparkler. She is currently writing her fourth collection of poetry and a debut novel, due out on Harper Perennial in 2018. In 2014, she co-wrote and directed her first feature film, an adaptation of the Janet Fitch novel by the same name, Paint It Black. Now, this Venice Beachborn Jill-of-all-trades shares her haute secrets to the City of Angels.

HOROLOGICAL MACHINES Clocking out with wristwatch alternatives from MB&F In just 12 years, Maximilian Büsser and Friends (MB&F) has successfully forged its own independent path in the centuries-old world of traditional watchmaking. Where other watch companies choose more classic designs from old archives, MB&F puts forth avant-garde and even shocking creations. Where other manufacturers strive for vertical integration to produce every tiny piece of their watches in-house, MB&F celebrates its ever-changing collaborations with artists and watchmaking specialists based all over the world. The company is also leading the charge for producing useful, mechanical objets that are most at home on tabletops, desks or creeping up walls— in today’s parlance, they are proud ‘unwearables.’ These horological machines, like their wrist-intended counterparts, are available at all Westime boutiques in Southern California and Miami. Here, we look at some of our favorite creatures, spaceships and characters that make MB&F so much more than a watchmaker.

ASTROGRAPH PEN MB&F Founder Maximilian Büsser dreamt as a child of traveling to outer space, and that vivid memory fueled his designs for several mechanical creations. So, the engineers at Swiss writing instrument manufacturer Caran d’Ache shared his vision and developed the technically challenging rocket ship fountain pen hailed as one of the most complex pens of all time with a total of 99 components. Its ruthenium body can stand vertically on a desk when its three stabilizer legs are deployed. What’s more, it even launches from the base—with a tiny, magnetized astronaut ready to attach to the rocket ship.

Simply put, this car lays it down really smoothly—assisted, no doubt, by a carbon-fiber driveshaft. It does so quickly, hitting 60 mph in under four seconds, and it holds the lap record for a production four-door sedan at Germany’s fabled Nürburgring race track (7:32 minutes). This puts it just a tick behind such luminaries

Overall, it’s a ton of fun to drive a car that allows an adjustment to engine mapping (how fast the throttle responds), suspension firmness, and exhaust note. The car speaks Italian like a big lady with a shield and a spear, so you better pay attention. And then there’s the Hellcat. Not much left to the imagination here—the snarling, sabre-tooth feline head on the front fender is a pretty good clue that you’re in for something rough and wild. Surprisingly, however, it’s not all lumps and bumps for those lucky enough to get a ride in this American screamer.

It’s really the best of the muscle car era, if that means excellent brakes, great cornering, and power that’s in the neighborhood of 250 percent above what Detroit churned out in the 1960s. (A brief side note: the Dodge Demon has just been announced, and—for those for whom 707 horsepower is a good starting point—your ride is on the way. This mesmerizing caliber is fitted with a skeletonized micro-rotor and features a power reserve of 60 hours. Each color is also limited to only 88 pieces. No wonder it makes such a good companion on a road trip—preferably a long one in an exciting car! And amidst such a breathtaking trip, our Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirellis told us it was time for lunch. The air was perfumed with a faint lavender scent as we explored the Provence afterwards, a beautiful part of France, with the wind going through our hair. It is incredible how many impressive, imposing, but—most of all—diverse landscapes France has to offer only hours apart by car. After leaving for the Gorges Du Verdon, also known as France’s Grand Canyon, we went on to the Côte D’Azur. Finally, our group arrived just in time for the Monaco Grand Prix, one of the highlights of the year in the principality. We got to stop and admire other people’s driving at that point and see Sebastian Vettel win the Grand Prix, with teammate Kimi Raikkonen coming in second. What a great conclusion to the drive of a lifetime!

VIVA LAS VEGAS!

What’s new and haute in Sin City for summer 2017 As the weather heats up, there’s no better place to cool off (and strip down) than Sin City. Las Vegas is the ultimate getaway for any Angeleno—a mere four-hour drive or one-hour plane ride away for a weekend of pure, unadulterated fun. Although you couldn’t possibly do newest and hautest things possible? We’ll place our bets right now (see what we did there?) that the W Las Vegas (2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd) is going to be a hit. As designed by Gensler and AvroKO Hospitality Group, this property retains the fun, youthful and approachably luxurious sensibility of the brand, thanks to its intimate layout, secret entrances, private spaces and personalized service. Guests will find the SLS adjacent on the up-andcoming north end of The Strip (in the hotel’s former luxury tower), with pool, restaurants and gaming options tucked away in relative The Living Room at The W

The established restauranteur and chef is also the author of two cookbooks; host of the Emmy-nominated El Mejor de los Peores for Fox Life; co-creator, executiveproducer and host of Nickelodeon’s Food Hunters; and competed on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters. TELL US ABOUT THE RESTAURANT’S NAME. ‘Chica’ really describes its spirit. Being a woman chef, and staffing my kitchen with more than five to 50 percent women—and celebrating Latin food and culture—’Chica’ just seemed right. And it’s fun. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE FIRST LATINA CELEBRITY CHEF ON THE STRIP? I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, but it’s a great responsibility and we’re working hard every day to make it as great as it can be. As women, and especially Latina, we get judged on a different scale. My team is working hard every day to exceed all expectations. I am so proud to be sharing my culture and my cooking with the world. WHAT SETS CHICA APART FROM THE REST? The best thing about Chica is that it’s one of a kind. There are no other fine-dining Latin cuisine restaurants. What we are doing—showcasing the flavors and ingredients, techniques and heritage of a collection of South American countries, including Argentina, Peru, Brazil, my home Venezuela and Mexico—is totally unique. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BRINGING EXTRA GIRL POWER TO THE STRIP? The women chefs are an incredible community. Of the three [existing female restauranteurs on The Strip, GIada de Laurentiis, Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken], I am closest to Mary Sue. She has been an incredible supporter and friend to me—always very kind and ready to answer any questions. In fact, Mary Sue and Susan’s long-time chef at Border Grill, Mike Minor, is now running my kitchen. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE RESTAURANT AND MENU ITEMS? Chica is the restaurant of my dreams—a place to showcase all of the flavors and cultures of the Latin American world. We designed it to look like the courtyard in an old Venezuelan villa, with modern touches of course. The menu is a celebration of Latin cooking—from Mexico right down to the tip of Argentina. We’ve created a ceviche bar, as well as a ‘wall of fire’ for Brazilian rodizio, a rotisserie and grill.

A

FTER SHOOTING SEVEN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS OF TELEVISION’S MOST popular show, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau knows his place within the Game of Thrones’ massive ensemble cast. “I’m just an old guy now!” the Danish actor laughs from a booth at the NoMad Hotel a day after our shoot at Tribeca’s One Hundred Barclay. Although it is happy hour on a Friday in Manhattan, he’s drinking a flat white—proving his point exactly. “The crazy stuff happens after I leave the party, unfortunately. I’m not a drinker… I mean, I can drink, but I don’t go all in. I stop. But if I want to go with the likes of Alfie Allen [Theon Greyjoy] and Kit Harrington [Jon Snow], well, I’m about 15 years too late for that party.” He can hang sometimes, though. Wherever co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss bring the show—be it Malta, Morocco, Spain, Iceland, Croatia, the U.S. or, most commonly, Belfast, Ireland—they make sure it’s a good time for everyone. “We actually have a lot of fun off-set,” he maintains. “Dan and David are really good at throwing parties, and we travel a lot, so there’s quite a lot of fun happening.” That said, for Coster-Waldau, who unbelievably turns 47 this month

There is absolutely no doubt that GOT will resume its winning streak in 2018, however, as it approaches its finale. If he’s being honest, Coster-Waldau never expected the show to take off the way it did—though he signed on anyway, despite the loathsomeness of his character (he has sex with his sister and paralyzes a little boy in the premiere episode), with the knowledge that Jaime would sing a redemption song come Season 3. “The beginning of Season 1 was a great start for a character. I spoke to [show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] and they told me that, if we got to do the three seasons, the arc would end with [Jaime] telling his version of why he became the King Slayer and saving the whole city from annihilation. I thought, ‘Wow, this is so cool.’ He’s wrongfully known for something, which in any other context would be considered the most heroic thing anyone has ever done. He’s saved all these people and now he’s just being hated for it. Being known as the best fighter in the world and then losing that part of your body

I THINK THAT ANY OF US ARE CAPABLE OF SO MANY GREAT THINGS, BUT WE’RE ALSO CAPABLE OF A LOT OF BAD THINGS. I THINK IT’S A QUESTION OF CIRCUMSTANCE. that defines you, that was interesting. Then, there was this whole idea of having a relationship with your sister, who is the queen, and you’re the father of her kids—but no one can ever know because it would mean their death—it was just interesting. I was drawn to the layers, to the secrets.” He’s good at keeping them, too. Coster-Waldau effectively shies away from divulging about the coming direction of the show, instead wanting to know our take on what might happen come Season 7. The grin on his face guarantees that he’s having fun with said guesses (although he hasn’t realized from our conversation that he’s inadvertently given away a secret: that he may be the last man standing come Season 8). Since he’s being recalcitrant, we decide to geek out and ask some hardcore burning fan questions about a possible love connection between Jaime and Brienne of Tarth [Gwendoline Christie]—and he indulges us. “I think there are a lot of feelings that he’s not aware of, that he’s not acting on,” he maintains. “There’s a definite connection between them, there’s no question about it. You can see that in the way they act together. He gave her a whole suit of armor!” But, alas, for all of you Jaime/Brienne enthusiasts, he has bad news:

COVER STORY “I don’t think we’ve seen any proof of romantic love though.” Coster-Waldau adds, “He’s called her a lot of horrible things, and she’s also called him all the worst things you can call someone—I think she gave as good as she got. That’s how they connected, the fact that neither of them would stand down and that they were both very strong-willed. She’s physically strong and mentally strong. He couldn’t break her. He respects her a great deal.” For those who aren’t up to date on the latest from GOT, by the end of Season 6, Jaime took up arms against the Faith Militant and, as punishment, has been removed from the Kingsguard. After fighting to oust Brynden ‘Blackfish’ Tully, he returned to King’s Landing to discover that the Great Sept—the center of religious worship for the Faith of the Seven— was destroyed because of his sister’s plotting. The wickedest of them all, she was then crowned Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. He realized she murdered the Faith Militant, the Tyrells and Grand Maester Pycelle in her bid for power and it may be up to him to save the world at the expense of the woman he loves most. It certainly brings ‘the struggle is real’ expression to a whole new level. So will Jaime support Cersei? “No comment,” Coster-Waldau says, sipping his coffee. He shakes his head when we persist in our line of questioning—wanting to know, had he written the show, if he would have his character stand by her side. “What’s interesting is that so many people are invested in this. So many people want to know about Brienne and Jaime, and [want him] to leave Cersei because she’s terrible. I think that… once you’re committed to someone for that long—they’ve been together since he was 16; that’s 25 years!—you don’t just throw that away. It’s always been dysfunctional, it’s always been messed up and it’s always been tricky, but this is a couple that have had three kids together and have gone through pretty much hell. So whatever he does, whatever he chooses, is not going to be easy.” Well, duh. We try one last time to beg for some juicy GOT gossip, but Coster-Waldau just folds his hands and smiles pleasantly. “Jaime won’t kill Cersei in Episode 1,” he says sweetly. Gee, thanks. Spoken like a true Lannister.

KATE MARA STARS AS A MARINE CANINE CORPORAL IN HER NEW FILM, WHILE FIGHTING TO SAVE CHIMPANZEES AND ALSO PLANNING HER WEDDING •

KATE MARA HAS ALWAYS HAD A SPECIAL BOND WITH DOGS. THE ACTRESS’ TWO BOSTON TERRIERS, BRUNO and Lucius, are her constant companions. Even when working, she travels with her furry mascots who then accompany her to set. So when the script for the recently released film, Megan Leavey, landed in Mara’s hands, it was a no-brainer: she knew she had to play the title role. The movie tells the real-life story of a United States marine corporal and member of the military’s canine team, who—alongside German shepherd Rex—served over 100 missions in Iraq, saving countless lives. However, her relationship with Rex is what saved her own life; he taught her how to love and provided her with a purpose. Despite being initially forced to clean out kennels as punishment, when she learned that the dogs and their handlers were heading to Iraq to sniff out bombs, weapons and improvised explosive devices, Leavey found a new calling. Now, viewers can see Leavey’s journey chronicled on the big screen—including the four-year-long fight she underwent to earn custody of Rex after they were both injured by a blast. “I knew I wanted to do it when I read the script. It was pretty simple,” Mara remembers. “I thought it was a really important story to tell, and I worked with the producer a very long time ago, so it was an obvious choice for me. I was just very moved by it, and I’m excited that it hasn’t been told before.”

Like Leavey, Mara finds comfort in her connection with dogs, so she was eager to meet Varko, too, who primarily played the role of Rex in the film. “I usually bring my dogs to work whenever I’m on a location… because they make me feel grounded and safe in a lot of ways. There’s a sort of comfort I think they bring, that animals in general bring to people, and so when you have this amazing animal that is by your side the entire time—I mean, it’s a very special experience,” she says with her signature frank tone. “We bonded very quickly and, when I didn’t have scenes with him, I truly missed it. I missed having [the multiple dogs playing Rex] in my space.” Although there were stand-ins, Varko was in almost all of Mara’s scenes and, in many cases, she simply had to interact with him. Her performance is honest, authentic and heartfelt. “It was totally unique and really joyful and amazing, and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced going to work.” Although she has played her fair share of complicated characters, something about Leavey was different. The character is multifaceted—she has a deadbeat mom, lost her best friend to a drug overdose, and returns from Iraq with post-traumatic stress disorder—and filming was an emotional experience for the 34-year-old actress. “The whole thing was really intense. People would think that it would’ve been maybe the war scenes—which def-

weapon together, how to march—basically everything because I knew nothing about it.” Mara then vigorously worked out with a trainer to build the strength necessary to handle the gear and a large dog. “I had just finished a movie not too long ago where I was training very intensely in a physical way, and so my trainer and I just sort of switched the focus. I had been… going be-

initely were intense—but, emotionally speaking, even the scenes where she goes back home, that stuff was very emotionally draining.” She continues, “I think the whole thing, the whole experience, was quite challenging in a beautiful way.” Another thing that makes Megan Leavey a film unlike any other Mara has worked on? It’s a war film that features a female lead. Zero Dark Thirty, Courage Under Fire, Camp X-Ray… the pictures that accurately and au-

Mara and her fellow movie star sister, Rooney, have spent years campaigning to rescue a group of 66 chimpanzees chimpanzees after the New York Blood Center used the animals for biomedical research and left them stranded on a remote river in Liberia. The Mara sisters traveled there to visit the chimps and raise awareness for the cause and, in late May, their hard work paid off: the Blood Center came to an agreement with the Humane Society, which will take responsibility for the chimpanzees, by providing $6 million to the organization to help cover the costs of the animals’ care. Mara’s love of animals makes her a natural vegan who promotes plantbased diets and Meatless Mondays. “I read this book called The Beauty Detox Solution about five or six years ago. This nutritionist, Kimberly Snyder, wrote it and I was actually introduced to it by my friend Jenna Dewan-Tatum… It tells you a lot about food combining and how our bodies digest, and what our bodies are meant to digest, and how it affects us from the inside out.” Mara was a vegetarian on and off before the book, but reading it made her become more aware of how dietary decisions affect the body. “Knowing why my body was reacting in certain ways to dairy and that kind of thing, that’s what made me really become… a conscious eater. JOHN SINGLETON IS MAKING THE LEAP FROM MOVIES TO TV WITH A PLETHORA OF SMALL SCREEN PROJECTS BY: LAURA SCHREFFLER PHOTOGRAPHY: ANDREAS BRANCH GROOMING: JUANITA LOPEZ

ANYONE WHO’S LIVED IN LOS ANGELES KNOWS THAT, EVEN THOUGH DREAMS can come true here, not everyone gets their picture-perfect ending. John Singleton is not only familiar with this sentiment, but has built his career around exposing the gritty underbelly of that quintessential sunset-colored Endless Summer movie poster ideal. “Los Angeles is a very beautiful place; there are so many different sides to its character. It has an alternating beauty and potential darkness. People come from all around the world to realize their dreams here, but sometimes those lives don’t change for the better. Sometimes, those dreams turn into nightmares—and those are very valid stories to be told, as well,” the 49-year-old director and producer notes.

He’s also grateful to be working the way that he wants. Though he took a four-year hiatus between directing the 2011 thriller Abduction and a 2015 episode of Empire, it was on his terms, for his reasons. “My greatest achievement is that I’ve been in the business for 25 years and I haven’t lost my heart,” he says. “I’ve seen people come and go, achieving varying levels of success, and I’ve seen them lose their minds. Life sounds pretty damn near perfect, and he knows it. “[It’s a luxury] to wake up and feel relaxed and not in danger. I went through the first 18, 19, years of my life [not feeling] that way. I was always like, ‘Well, OK, you grow up and you don’t know how long you’re going to live because things are so volatile out there in the environment. I don’t have to deal with that anymore. I’m over my PTSD of growing up in the ’hood,” he says with a laugh. “I wake up, take a deep breath and say, ‘I’m grateful to be alive.’ I really do—that’s no joke.”

The thing that defines me is that I’m about preservation of the soul, of doing things I really believe in, living my life the way I believe, not compromising any of that and being able to stand by my decisions.” In fact—dare we say it—John Singleton seems like he’s actually living in The Endless Summer film. And he agrees. “My life started out as a nightmare and became a dream. I grew up in a crazy neighborhood and was able to use that as fodder for me as a storyteller.” He pauses a beat before adding, “My life just keeps getting better and better.”

Kate Mara has always had a special bond with dogs. The actress’ two Boston terriers, Bruno and Lucius, are her constant companions. Even when working, she travels with her furry mascots who then accompany her to set. So when the script for the recently released film, Megan Leavey, landed in Mara’s hands, it was a no-brainer―she knew she had to play the title role. The movie tells the real-life story of a United States Marine corporal and member of the military’s canine team. Alongside German shepherd Rex, Megan Leavey served over 100 missions in Iraq, saving countless lives. However, her relationship with Rex is what saved her own life; he taught her how to love and provided her with a purpose. Although Leavey was initially forced to clean out kennels as punishment, when she learned that the dogs and their handlers were heading to Iraq to sniff out bombs, weapons and improvised explosive devices, Leavey found a new calling. The film chronicles her journey—including the four-year-long fight she underwent to earn custody of Rex after they were both injured by a blast.

My most recent significant estate sale was the iconic 300 Delfern Drive, The Edie Goetz Estate. Out of the 13-plus estates I have sold in Holmby Hills, this was one of the best residential estates in the city with its classic Hollywood history, stunning architecture and classic elements. MYRA NOURMAND NOURMAND & ASSOCIATES Known as the First Lady of Real Estate, Myra Nourmand has a

reputation for excellence in the listing, marketing and selling of high-end residences across Los Angeles. What has been your ticket to success? My ability to develop strong relationships in the community, my dedication to my craft, my drive, and adapting to change in today’s cutting age technology. The home is where your heart is, so this is one of the most gratifying services that I can provide to a client. What are some common challenges and rewards you experience selling residential real estate in L.A.? There’s only one way to thrive in the fiercely competitive L.A. market: work non-stop. You have to be accessible to your clients nearly 24/7 and you have to work at lightning-fast speed. Amazing listings [that are] priced right fly off the market because everyone is looking to purchase the same sought-after property. BEVERLY HILLS BEAUTY Nourmand represents the beautiful Beverly Hills estate (right) at 945 N. Foothill Road, asking $21,950,000.

who seek an amazing L.A. view are entering a hyper-competitive market. Many have to adjust their budgets and be willing to pay more than they expected. What is the key to sealing the deal on any real estate transaction? In the high-end [subsector], you’re dealing with multiple players: buyers and sellers and their team of business managers, accountants, agents and lawyers. Putting together a multimilliondollar deal under these circumstances is full of challenges. Effectively navigating through inevitable obstacles is what separates the elite agents from their less successful counterparts.

What advice would you give an agent who is just starting out? Tenacity is key. I started out after being a homemaker who had stopped working to raise my kids. I told myself failure was not an option and, when I encountered roadblock after roadblock, I kept pushing forward. There’s a lot of disappointment in this business: sellers change their minds and pull their homes off the market, and buyers back out of deals. But around every corner is a new deal. As the saying goes, “When a door closes, a window opens.” What do you see as the most desirable amenity or selling point of a residence that buyers look for in your market? The most desirable amenities for my clients are location, property size and architecture.

Beverly Hills-based realtor Joyce Rey has dedicated more than four decades to selling the country’s most extravagant residences, setting numerous records throughout her career and acquiring over $3 billion in sales. If you move outside of L.A., the Sycamore Valley Ranch (formerly known as ‘Neverland’) is not only a piece of history, but an absolute paradise. What are some common challenges and rewards you experience selling residential real estate in Los Angeles? It is always difficult to find the perfect house for a buyer. Sellers typically want to price their property above actual market value. The rewards are many—the most important is the respect of your colleagues and the appreciation of your clients. What do you see as the most desirable amenity or selling point of a residence that buyers look for in your market? I think they look for outstanding architecture; city, ocean or pastoral views; and [for a home to be] move-in ready.

What are some common challenges and rewards you experience selling residential real estate in L.A.? It’s always a voyage of discovery trying to match the vision of the buyer with the properties on the market; the reward is when you achieve that. What do you see as the most desirable amenity or selling point of a residence that buyers look for in your market? Ocean views, with the ultimate [amenity] being beach access. What has been your most significant home sale? My first home sale in 1994 for $5 million, which I sold a few years ago for $60 million. This defined my career in real estate. What distinguishes it from other residences on the market? There’s a $60 million estate that’s located on PCH that is absolute perfection. salon, a Qubica AMF two-lane bowling alley, a fitness center, a resortsize swimming pool and spa, a commercial elevator, and much more. Needless to say, the property is unrivaled in its opulence. What are some common challenges and rewards you experience selling residential real estate in L.A.? In this hot market, the challenge lies in knowing the off-market properties and convincing sellers to sell off-market. Aside from the financial reward, which brings great pleasure, I relish in matching clients to the perfect property. Since our office sells one-third of our high-end properties in-house and off-market, it creates great fun in matching people to people and lifestyles to lifestyles through their future luxury home. If you could own any estate currently on or off the market, which would it be? My favorite estate in the entire city would have to be the estate owned by my partner’s late grandfather, Conrad Hilton. Sitting on over eight flat acres on Bel-Air Country Club, this exceptional property has no neighbors, providing the utmost privacy and intimacy. I don’t

SUZANNE PERKINS SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY Suzanne Perkins has represented both buyers and sellers in many of Santa Barbara’s priciest residential real estate transactions. What are your predictions for the luxury real estate sector in Santa Barbara over the next year? Santa Barbara is unique because we have the mountains to the north and the ocean to the south, so our growth is restricted. We also have very little inventory on the market, so the good properties in the luxury real estate sector are going to continue to demand good prices.

What is the secret to sealing the deal on any transaction? Complete honesty and always making sure that your clients come first. What has been your most significant home sale? My most important sale occurred in January 2007, when I represented the sellers of Bixby Company’s, El Cojo and Jalama Ranches. It was the largest non-commercial transaction in California history—the combined listing value of the two properties was an astounding $155 million. Buyers had to agree to charter helicopters in order to view the property. Since most of the ranch was covered with a no-fly zone, we had to work with Vandenberg AFB to allow showings. Describe the hottest home that you currently represent. The Villa Santa Barbara—it’s owned by Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi [and] is listed for $45 million. There’s nothing that has ever been on the market that can compare to this property in any way. It has history, privacy, views and fabulous architecture. Right now, the most desirable amenity in our area is a really large, zero-edge pool. Buyers are also looking for clean lines, high ceilings, open spaces, and a clean and simple design with a more contemporary feel.

over the decades; however, success comes with a constant process of deliberate focus, effort and strategy. It starts with a basic prerequisite for knowledge and expertise, honesty and placing the clients’ best interest as top priority. Success is mostly the delayed result of longterm commitment to deliver quality results to the marketplace. What is the key to sealing the deal on any real estate transaction? To foresee potential problems in advance and move to resolve and eliminate issues early in the transaction process. What are your predictions for the luxury real estate sector in the L.A. area over the next year? In my marketplace, which includes Montecito and the South Coast of Santa Barbara County, we enjoy what is arguably the best real estate in the world, a world-class culture center disguised as a sleepy coastal town, and mostly excellent weather year-round. There will always be a strong demand for property here!

The BUZZ THE MOST BUZZED ABOUT LOCALE IN Los Angeles this spring, quite unpredictably, was the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve in the Santa Monica Mountains—the setting for Christian Dior’s 2018 Cruise Collection. In fact, its ruggedness was actually perfect for the jungle-themed show, which pulled from the designer’s appropriation of rock paintings in his line, Ovale, inspired by the 1940 discovery of the Lascaux cave with allusions to primitive female depictions, such as the Willendorf Venus. Over 800 guests—including Charlize Theron, Rihanna, Brie Larson, Miranda Kerr, Solange Knowles, Anjelica Huston, Demi Moore, Freida Pinto, Kate Bosworth Kelly Rowland, Haley Bennett, Kiernan Shipka, Rashida Jones, Banks, Dylan Penn and Chiara Ferragni—were shuttled to the relatively unknown location, waiting with bated breath to see the first collection from new artistic CELEBRITY STYLE The crème de la crème of celebrities flocked to the show, including (clockwise from above) Charlize Theron, Miranda Kerr, Rihanna, Kate Bosworth and Brie Larson.

director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. The reveal was a completely feminine representation, bringing a wild and almost bestial spirit into the present. In her vision, prehistoric wolves emerge from the Lascaux cave on silk jacquards where the ocher, gold colors contrast with blacks and reinterpreted female handprints become sequined embroideries. The show also delivered a feminist reinvention of the tarots by Vicki Noble and Karen Vogel

THE SETTING The installation took two weeks to create with 18 tents, four caravans, two hot-air balloons and 400 wooden posts that spanned a five-and-a-half mile radius. Following the featured attraction, the show space transformed into a concert with a special performance by Solange and a set by DJ Justin Strauss. THE FOOD Guests were treated to delicacies from a wood fired pizza station (including Margherita, wild mushroom and Sicilian options), a seafood station with yellowtail ceviche and tuna tataki, garden-friendly fare like radicchio cups and prosciutto-wrapped salad greens, chicken mole tacos and cassava chia tostadas, plus ice cream, cookies and carrot cupcakes. DIOR’S NEW ERA— MARIA GRAZIA CHIURI Maria Grazia Chiuri is a legend in the making: the Italian designer is the first woman in the history of Dior to be named Women’s Artistic Director. Born to a seamstress mother, Maria had an interest in fashion from a very young age. She graduated from the European Institute of Design in Rome in the 1980s and began to work as a designer at Fendi in 1989. Ten years later, she joined Valentino as an accessory designer before being named a co-creative director of that house. In July 2016, she stepped into Raf Simons’ shoes at Christian Dior and the rest is history.

And as the co-founder of Neon Roots, one of the fastest growing app development agencies in the country, Lee has worked with all-star clients from Tony Robbins to Snoop Dogg, as well as numerous Fortune 500 companies. Earlier this year, a creator brought on Lee and his team for the Kickstarter campaign of Superscreen, ‘the world’s first portable 10” touchscreen for your smartphone.’ Within the first 30 minutes, they’d exceeded their goal of raising $50,000. After 30 days, they’d reached $2.54 million, making it the 11th largest tech campaign in Kickstarter’s history. Forbes highlighted the campaign for being “prepared, educated, and balanced,” while Macworld emphasized the product’s “spectacular support.” It was one of the most watched Kickstarter Live events of all time, and 50% of the supporters were new to the platform. “They’d never even heard of Kickstarter,” Lee claims. “And we got a lot of notoriety for being novices. Most of us had never run a Kickstarter before.” Of course, his success wasn’t beginner’s luck. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lee has been carving his own path since middle school. The LuxuryBEAT

BY ROSALIA CONNOLLY

Why is Legacy such an innovative move for the company? One of the things that sets Louis XIII apart is the brand’s longstanding commitment to craftsmanship and mastery of time. Each decanter is the life achievement of generations of cellar masters. Legacy is an

“ Louis XIII [is] the ultimate

embodiment of the incredible history, bridging the past and the future.

expression of the mastery of time. It stands as the very definition of luxury lifestyle... a satisfaction so complete and without precedent that it demands to be savored and be rremembered.

Your current cellar master is the youngest the brand has ever had. Is his youth an asset? Baptist Loiseau’s youthfulness brings a fresh perspective to our storied brand. For instance, as he works on projecting the brand into the next century, we are considering the impact that climate change could have on vineyards and, ultimately, on Louis XIII. Have you found it challenging for the brand to move into a digital age? Social media was a major component of our strategy for 100 Years: The Movie You Will Never See [a film starring John Malkovich and directed by Robert Rodriguez], an incredible, artistic, creative project, as it gave

us the platform to share an inspirational work of art with people around the globe. A separate, but also strong, area of interest is e-retail, as it is an additional channel which makes our clients’ lives easier. What initiatives have you employed as CEO to keep modern relevance, while still managing to sustain the brand’s integrity? Louis XIII has debuted a string of innovative activations, such as the production of 100 Years; a limited-edition masterpiece in collaboration with Hermès, Puiforcat and Saint-Louis called l’Odyssee d’un Roi, which was auctioned for charity; and the opening of the world’s firstever Louis XIII cognac boutique in Beijing.

LEAVING A LEGACY Louis XIII is launching an unprecedented new product that’s making a historical mark on the cognac industry

L

Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world so, from award shows to movie premieres, there is always a reason to celebrate. In a forward-thinking city like Los Angeles, where people are always searching for what’s new and what’s next, Louis XIII provides a chance to slow down, savor and appreciate the luxury of time, and think a century ahead.

OUIS XIII HAS BEEN AN INNOVATIVE, FORWARDthinking brand since its creation by Paul Emile Remy Martin in 1874—yet it is also one that is firmly rooted in history. Connecting this divide was a welcome challenge for

Philippe Farnier, the current chief executive officer of Rémy Cointreau USA and a member of the company’s global Executive Committee. Using the knowledge he gleaned from previous positions at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté and Parfums Christian Dior, Farnier helped to conceive the company’s latest effort, Legacy—a unique limited-edition decanter, hand-signed by the four living cellar masters. Only 500 bottles will be released internationally, each accompanied by an etched plaque displaying its unique identification number. Here, Farnier discusses the evolution of the brand and how it plans on continuing to leave its mark on the spirits industry.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF LOUIS XIII

HISTORY IN A BOX Louis XIII Legacy (right) is the first cognac of its kind to be hand-signed by four living cellar masters. The beautiful bottle is then packaged in this sleek case (above).

Why is the product perfect for the L.A. market?
