LTHOUGH 2016 DIDN’T PRODUCE THE HISTORIC FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT THAT MANY HAD HOPED FOR, IT’S A new year and we’re betting that many women will make a name for themselves in the next 12 months. In this issue, we highlight three smart, talented, accomplished ladies who have already done so. However, we suspect they’ll make an even bigger impact over the coming

year. Our cover star is California native Laura Dern, an award-winning actress and Hollywood power woman; in this issue, she chats

with Haute Living about her new projects: The Founder, HBO’s Big Little Lies, and the dramedy Wilson. We’d also like to introduce you to two San Francisco-based entrepreneurs who turned their big ideas into global success stories. Kara Goldin is the founder and CEO of Hint Water, a company that is attempting to improve health in America, one bottle of natural fruit-essence water at a time. Then there’s Lisa Sugar, the mother and viral blogger who eschewed snark and created the upbeat PopSugar, the world’s leading lifestyle website for women, with a global audience of more than 100 million readers. We applaud these women’s achievements and their willingness to act as role models and mentors. Also in this issue: the top 10 luxury highrises in San Francisco and four warm-weather escapes. Plus, we’ve got the 411 on Napa’s hottest new Japanese haute cuisine restaurant, Kenzo. So enjoy. And Happy New Year!

SHOPPING

POST STREET RETAIL IS HAVING A MOMENT

Few are immune to the city’s rising rents, which are even reorganizing the face of its poshest street. Post Street is a storied San Francisco shopping fairway running from the Presidio down to Market Street and commanding the northern side of the city’s illustrious Union Square. The street specializes in both highbrow and low-brow international clothing, accessories, home goods, and jewelry. It’s home to Goyard, Cartier, Burberry, Zara, the North Face, and Nike. While Sak’s Fifth Avenue and Williams-Sonoma have held court here for years, other purveyors have tended to move out as rents rise to stratospheric levels, producing some of the highest, and fastest increasing, premium retail rents in the world. Even the venerable Christian Dior was forced to vacate its prime Union Square location on Stockton Street to avoid skyrocketing rent and move into a new home on the corner of Grant Avenue and Post. There was more shuffling when Shreve & Co., the famed San Francisco jeweler, had to give up its namesake building thanks to astronomical rents. A long list of changes like these have altered the face of Post Street shopping. Here are some of the most notable changes.

In April 2015, Saks Fifth Avenue (384 Post Street. 415-986-4300) announced that it would close the stand-alone Men’s Store at 220 Post Street and incorporate menswear into the Saks San Francisco flagship a block away. The change went into affect in October 2016 when the department store debuted its

SHOPPING Another old standby that’s undergoing a modern makeover is Tiffany & Co. (350 Post Street, 415-781-7000). In honor of the jeweler’s 25th anniversary on Post Street, the store has gotten a much-needed refresh. Outside, a beautiful glass facade offers a clear view into the grand entry. Inside, the larger Tiffany & Co. store features more engagement rings, watches, and high jewelry than ever before in a bright and modern setting. The new design is open and airy, with marble and wood flooring, pale blue walls with gold accents, and plenty of well-lit glass jewelry cases. A grand staircase leads to the second

This roundup would, of course, not be complete without a mention of Gump’s (135 Post Street, 415-982-1616), the city’s original department store, which opened in 1861. It wasn’t immune to the Union Square shuffle: In 1994 high rents forced Gump’s to move from the building it had occupied since 1909 to its current location. The spa now takes up two complete floors at 126 Post Street, with the second floor housing facial treatments and the new sixth floor focusing on body work. The beautiful and soothing space was designed by Sophie Azouaou of SophiSticate Interiors and has white marble–tiled floors, grey tufted love seats, sculptures, and artwork by local painter Sergey Konstantinov and photographer David Perea. It’s not at all clinical but luxurious and inviting.

ADEENI DESIGN GALERIE The city’s newest destination for design and art, Adeeni Design Galerie, has opened at 664 Post Street. The intimate space is filled with exotic treasures, plush pillows, and unique artwork. The gallery is artist and interior designer Claudia Juestel’s brainchild and showcases her Austrian heritage. Ebony cabinets, gold hardware, and other sleek touches anchor the space’s black-andwhite palette with its splash of chartreuse.

THE SARATOGA Bacchus Management group— the team behind the muchloved Spruce restaurant—has opened a new hot spot in the Tenderloin. Located on the corner of Larkin and Post streets, in what was the historic Saratoga Hotel, the two-story eatery has a large bar with shelves of rare liquors. Chef Mark Sullivan created a menu of hearty pub fare that features dry-aged New York steak, blue prawns baked in rock salt, and a burger with melted Italian Taleggio cheese and coleslaw on an onion bun.

HELLO, PISCO A forgotten South American brandy is back. Pisco, the drink of the moment, has returned to the U.S. after near oblivion. The high-proof spirit is a clear or light-amber brandy, distilled from wine that’s made with grapes largely found in Peru, where it has been the spirit of choice since the 16th century. But in the United States and elsewhere, it’s a forgotten pleasure. The spirit is the subject of Pisco Punch: A Cocktail Comeback Story, a documentary that premiered at the Napa Valley Film Festival, and thanks to people like Duggan McDonnell, a pisco pioneer and creator of Campo de Encanto, the spirit is being reintroduced to the United States. A former bar owner turned culinary anthropologist, McDonnell started making Campo de Encanto pisco six years ago while researching San Francisco’s love affair with the drink.

During the mid-19th century, Pisco Punch was the favorite elixir of locals, and over time it all but disappeared. Today, McDonnell’s pisco can be found in cocktails all across the city. At the Sea Star bar in the Dogpatch neighborhood, co-owner Alicia Walton uses it to make a spicy twist on the classic sour. The space where the Sea Star is located has

been a bar since 1899, so it’s only fitting that pisco be featured in one of her superbly crafted cocktails. Walton infuses Aperol with chiles before shaking the mixture with pisco, honey, and lemon juice. The resulting concoction is smooth and perfectly balanced, but with a hint of heat. Make it using the recipe here and impress your friends with your knowledge of pisco. Salud! Each villa has a private pool and an air-conditioned suite decorated with traditional Indonesian art and an open-air sitting room with desk, lounges, and television. URUGUAY What’s the hottest new South American wine destination you’ve never heard of? Bodega Garzón in Uruguay. Located near the southeastern coast close to Argentina, Bodega Garzón produces outstanding Tannat and Albariño varietals. It’s summer during our winter there, so January and February are the ideal time to visit this up-and-coming area. With two helicopter pads; 3,000 acres of pristine vineyards; and a tasting room that has a restaurant, a bar, and outdoor areas, it’s an unparalleled winery experience. The bodega, which opened in March 2016, is the realized dream of Argentine billionaire, Alejandro P. Bulgheroni. A hotel and private club are in the works, but for now, stay nearby in the charmingly artsy beach town of José Ignacio, or book a room at the Garzón Hotel and Restaurant of celebrity Argentine chef Francis Mallmann, who oversees the kitchens at Bodega Garzón. Once you’ve had your fill of wine and Patagonian barbecue or fish cooked over open fires, stop by the Colinas de Garzón, Bulgheroni’s sister property, which produces the region’s finest olive oil.

isa Sugar has always been obsessed with pop culture. She can quote lines from Say Anything, The Notebook, and Dawson’s Creek. Her first concert: Michael Jackson. Her favorite book: Valley of the Dolls. And although she grew up in Potomac, Maryland, the theme of her bat mitzvah was Los Angeles. With this history, it’s no wonder she founded a website based on her love of all things celebrity and entertainment.

In 2005, long after her idyllic early years, she was living in San Fran-

cisco, working in advertising at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, and she started a little blog that chronicled the lives of celebrities. “When I was in advertising, I loved that I worked in a very creative environment, but my job itself was not creative. It was all balancing budgets and not necessarily working on stuff that made me feel like I was part of the creative process,” she told Haute Living on a recent wintry afternoon. What she did like about her job was the early access to television shows, movies, and magazines. “I got every magazine for free. I got to see every show before it was on the air. I would write reviews to my friends and tell them which ones to look out for. That was the stuff that I liked. I was like, How do I take that with me? How do I take this knowl-

Sugar and her team of female editors worked hard to create a never-ending stream of content. A series of verticals were launched—FabSugar focused on fashion, BellaSugar featured beauty, and YumSugar was about food. PopSugar is one of only a handful of San Franciscobased media publishing companies, but Sugar was able to find incredible employees across all

What’s more, the company owns Shopstyle, an incredible digital shopping platform, has its own L.A.-based video studio, and operates a monthly subscription-based gift box, PopSugar Must Haves. At the center of all this is Sugar, a blue-eyed beauty with a bushel of curly hair. Now 40 and the mother of three girls, Sugar has just released her first book, Power Your Happy. Part memoir, part career guide, the book shares Sugar’s positive outlook on life. “I typically am an optimistic person, always have been,” she says. In the book, she answers questions that PopSugar readers have been asking her for years. “Writing the book was kind of answering the questions that I felt like we had been getting asked the most from our audience,” she explains, “whether it was them personally trying to figure out their life and needing help, or wanting to know how PopSugar started and how I was able to create the company and have a family and work-life balance and all that kind of stuff. So it was a process of putting all that into one place.” She encourages her audience to figure out what they are passionate about through a series of questions like, Is now the time for a career change? We’re really excited to share advice with our audience. We’re in the know, but we’re not know-it-alls,” she says. “We want to make sure somebody who’s brand-new isn’t intimidated by the content but somebody who is a connoisseur can feel like they’re learning something as well.” She believes this all-encompassing perspective is a key contributor to PopSugar’s success. “Online media is saturated right now, but the other voices are different

TAKEAWAYS FROM POWER YOUR HAPPY Start small. “It’s really important to figure out how to carve out a little bit of your time each day to do what it is that’s making you happier. If you are somebody who likes to cook and you have this day job that’s taking up all of your time, how do you at least allow yourself to make that fun breakfast that’s going to make you happy for the rest of the day?” Find your support system. “The all-star team can be anyone from your mom or your sister to your best friend to people that you don’t know in real life. Beyoncé is on my all-star team. Just listening to her music can change my mind-set if I had a really crappy day.” Work hard. Play nice. “People need to realize that the “overnight millionaire” thing doesn’t happen that often, so you really need to bust your ass and, at the same time, not be an ass.”

HOW KARA GOLDIN TURNED NATURALLY FLAVORED WATER INTO A $90 MILLION BRAND THAT’S DISRUPTING THE BEVERAGE AND HEALTH INDUSTRIES BY KATIE SWEENEY

ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO, KARA GOLDIN, THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF SAN FRANCISCO–BASED HINT WATER, FOUND HERSELF AT A crossroads. The mother of three had left her high-profile job in tech as vice president of shopping and e-commerce partnerships at AOL, where she had built revenue to more than $1 billion in less than seven years. Then she took time off to plot her next move. PHOTO COURTESY OF HINT WATER

“After leaving my career at AOL, I decided I really wanted to do something that makes a difference,” the natural redhead told Haute Living on a recent chilly afternoon at her Union Street office. “I thought it was ultimately going to be a nonprofit, and while I was trying to figure out what that next role would be, I realized that I wasn’t as healthy as I wanted to be. I was 55 pounds overweight, I had terrible acne, and I had no energy. I was drinking a ton of diet soda.” Goldin started on a regime of organic chicken and other healthy food, walking as much as possible on a regular basis, getting plenty of sleep, and shopping at Whole Foods, but she wasn’t able to lose the weight. “I thought, I’m doing everything I’m supposed to be doing, so why am I not losing this weight?’“ she says. Goldin was frustrated and decided to consult some doctors. Nobody could explain it to her satisfaction.

On this evening, politicians, socialites, tech impresarios, and charity benefactors come together to celebrate the upcoming 84th season of the San Francisco Ballet. The Opening Night Gala is the social soirée of the year and the 2017 event promises to be bigger and better than ever. “This year’s theme is Ever Magical,” gala chair Avé Seltsam told Haute Living. “I must say that at every level we have experienced true magic, from the incredible Gala Committee to SF Ballet Associates and all those who have enthusiastically collaborated on this important and special event. SF’s Top 10 Luxury Residential High-Rises BY KATIE SWEENEY

IF ANYTHING IS RED HAUTE IN SAN FRANCISCO RIGHT NOW, IT’S THE REAL ESTATE MARKET, AND LUXURY high-rises are popping up all over. Here, in alphabetical order, are the city’s most spectacular new luxury condominium and apartment buildings and the ace developers who are building them. Every one of them makes high design, industryleading amenities, and advanced safety and security systems their top priorities. Several developers have also built or are building nearby affordable housing as part of their deal to win the city’s approval.

Alchemy by Alta WOOD PARTNERS

Atlanta-based Wood Partners has been involved in the development of more than 53,000 homes with a combined value of more than $8.3 billion. Their latest project is Alchemy by Alta, a massive, centrally located complex of six buildings with 336 large, luxurious apartment homes built on a former UC Berkeley Extension site in Hayes Valley. Of those, 110 units are designated for LGBT seniors and 50 are reserved for low-income individuals and families. A LEED Gold recipient for neighborhood development, Alchemy by Alta stands out for its array of gorgeous outdoor amenities including a park, a 10,000 squarefoot community garden, an outdoor lounge with fire pit, a plum orchard, and a bocce ball court. There is also a fully functioning bicycle workshop and a private music room with piano and musical equipment storage. The fitness center is open 24 hours a day and has

Lumina TISHMAN SPEYER

In 1978, Robert Tishman and his son-in-law, Jerry Speyer, founded Tishman Speyer, a company that owns, has redeveloped, or manages 152 million square feet of residential and commercial space. Tishman Speyer controls landmarks like the Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center in New York City and owns skyscrapers in many major cities across the globe. In San Francisco, the company’s latest project is Lumina, two

sleek towers designed by the internationally known Arquitectonica. All 655 of the one-, two-, and three-bedroom condominiums are outfitted with luxe appliances by Gaggenau, marble countertops, and European porcelain flooring. Each home is equipped with Nest, the smart thermostat that’s controlled via a smartphone. Amenities at Lumina include a 7,000-square-foot fitness center with a rock climbing wall designed by Jay Wright, a screening room, a rooftop terrace, a spa, and an Audi car-sharing program. When the Lumina’s twostory penthouse hit the market, it clocked in as the city’s most expensive listing ever. The asking price? A cool $49 million.

NEMA AND JASPER Crescent Heights

Miami-based Crescent Heights is a real estate developer owned by billionaire Sonny Kahn and cousins Russell Galbut and Bruce Menin. The company is known for establishing a housing presence in areas where residences are not plentiful, and it built both NEMA, a pioneering collection of four 10- to 37-story apartment towers in the up-and-coming Mid-Market district across from Twitter headquarters, and Jasper, a 40-story tower of 320 rental units crowning Rincon Hill. Everything about the complexes is smart and futuristic. Tech innovations abound at both properties, where security cameras monitor the building 24 hours a day. The homes have keyless entry doors that are accessible with a slim card. When residents take the elevator to the fitness center, pool, or spa, they simply push the icon associated with the desired destination and the elevator drops them there. Large digital touch screens are in the common areas; to access a car, it’s just a matter of contacting the garage valet team quickly by using the touch screen monitor. There’s an app that allows residents to schedule in-home massages, pay rent, or order local organic produce. Laundry, dry cleaning, housekeeping, dog walking, child care, bicycle repair, and car washing are a few of the services available.

Solaire and Park Tower GOLUB & COMPANY

Golub & Company, a Chicago-based real estate developer, is making its mark on the San Francisco landscape with two new buildings: the Solaire, a 32-story, 409-unit luxury residential high-rise with green design elements on the corner of Fremont and Folsom in SoMa, and Park Tower, a much-hyped 43-story office building adjacent to the Transbay Terminal and City Park. “San Francisco’s Transbay area is emerging as one of the most exciting micro-markets in the world, and we’re pleased to be part of its revitalization with both residential and office offerings,” Lee Golub, executive vice president, told Haute Living. “Park Tower and Solaire are reshaping the San Francisco skyline, and we believe they will change the way San Franciscans live and work.”

The most cutting-edge design techniques, materials, and energy-saving measures are being incorporated into both buildings.

The Austin, PACIFIC EAGLE

Pacific Eagle, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Great Eagle Holdings, is building The Austin, a condo high-rise that’s coming to life at the corner of Pine and Polk streets on the edge of Lower Nob Hill. World-renowned Arquitectonica designed the 12-story structure with ground-floor retail space, 100 sophisticated residences with premium finishes, a rooftop terrace, and a nonprofit art space along Austin Alley. “We believe that San Francisco buyers seek quality in all aspects of their life,” Hans Galland, Pacific Eagle senior vice president of development and acquisitions told Haute Living. “From the floor plans that have been carefully laid out to maximize space to the sweeping city views in all directions and the grand marble concierge desk for the doorman in the lobby, we are striving to bring class, elegance, and high design.” The residences are meant to inspire creativity and foster connections. Working from home will take on new meaning with a landscaped courtyard and a roof-deck with Wi-Fi. Every home features floor-toceiling windows to optimize natural light, an open kitchen with hidden storage and appliances, and floating vanities in the bathrooms.

Bob Faith founded Greystar in 1993 when he noticed that the building industry was more focused on assets than pleasing people. He set out to refocus on people and now the company’s goal is to build genuine relationships with its residents. Greystar’s latest SF property is The Duboce. Nestled into the relatively tranquil yet central Duboce Triangle neighborhood, the location is steps away from the Castro and the Mission district; as such it’s perfect for those who don’t want to live in the bustling downtown or SoMa districts but still want easy access to shopping and public transportation. The 87 rental apartments share luxe amenities such as a dry cleaning delivery system, an expansive roof deck with spa, a barbecue, fire pits, and spacious closets. Potential renters can choose from 22 varied one- and two-bedroom floor plans.

The Harrison MAXIMUS REAL ESTATE PARTNERS

Rob Rosania made his fortune in New York real estate as one-half of Stellar Aries Investor. Then in 2014, Rosania separated from his longtime partner, Laurence Gluck, and founded Maximus Real Estate Partners. He turned his focus to San Francisco and became involved with the Parkmerced, SF’s largest apartment complex. His latest venture is The Harrison, a 49-story ultra-luxe condominium tower atop Rincon Hill in SoMa with drop-dead gorgeous views of the bay. “The Harrison is an urban oasis where homeowners can experience luxury in the modern age. The building strives to create an atmosphere of comfort and escape, and a place where residents can experience a whole new lifestyle of a life well lived,” Rosania explained to Haute Living. “Ken Fulk’s design [of the 298 units] is bold and opinionated, with soul and a personality for residents who have a viewpoint in this world.” Fulk, who has plenty of experience designing homes for the titans of Silicon Valley, equipped the one- and two-bedroom units with diagonal plank gray oak floors, custom brass and casted-glass wall sconces, and floor-to-ceiling windows—each a timeless environment so chic, says Fulk, that he thinks “folks will want to live up to it.” The Harrison is a study in upscale amenities from a main foyer reminiscent of a grand home’s library to an onsite concierge in partnership with Luxury Attaché, a state-of-the-art fitness center that overlooks an urban park, a doorman, a seventh-floor pool and jacuzzi, outdoor

terraces, a valet, and a pantry that’s stocked with snacks, fruit, and pastries. On the top floor is the 3,500-square-foot Uncle Harry’s— a dazzling residents-only lounge with a main living area, a doublesided fireplace, and a private dining room.

The Pacific TRUMARK URBAN

Two development industry veterans, Gregg Nelson and Michael Maples, founded Trumark Urban in 2008 in the belief that it’s the real estate developer’s duty to not only create buildings but also to enhance the community surrounding them. They plan to do just that at The Pacific, an ultra-luxe collection of 76 condominium residences spread across a tower, penthouses, and three-level formal living room, a chef ’s kitchen, fine finishes, generous square footage, soaring ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Trumark’s team worked with world-renowned Handel Architects to create a nine-story tower that has spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Tamalpais, and the Pacific Ocean. “The Pacific offers a full range of amenities that are essential to the lifestyle associated with the iconic area’s discerning dwellers, including private-vehicle valet, full-service concierge, lobby attendant, a private Observatory Lounge overlooking the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, a private guest suite, and a world-class fitness center,” Arden Hearing, managing director of Trumark Urban explained to Haute Living. Realty Equities Inc. is a relatively new real estate development company run by a father and his two sons. Their first property is the modern Vela, the Marina district’s newest luxury apartment building. Built according to LEED Gold standards, Vela was made with sustainable building materials, LED lighting, and a storm-water retention system. The building has an urban terrace with knockout views of the Golden Gate Bridge, multi-zone heating, keyless entry, a video intercom with remote-control access, and ultra-high-speed Internet with Wi-Fi. ALL THAT GLITTERS Tiffany & Co. VP Tom Carroll walks us through the redone SF flagship. In honor of the 25th anniversary of Tiffany & Co.’s San Francisco flagship, the whole store has undergone a glittering expansion and renovation. Walk up to the renewed Tiffany location in the heart of Union Square and you’ll face towering glass windows reminiscent of Art Deco skyscrapers. They are grand enough to impress and to get a long look inside, where new starry lighting beautifully illuminates a series of bespoke salons, including those for engagements, haute joaillerie, and watches. Look up and you’ll see a sparkling second-floor mezzanine that now overlooks the entire foyer. What’s more, this will apparently be the first Tiffany store to debut an outdoor space: an exclusive terrace with seating and green TOP TO BOTTOM: A rendering of Tiffany & Co.’s new SF flagship; Tiffany Soleste with tamzamite and diamonds set in platinum: (from left) ring, $9,000; pendant, $7,300; earrings, $6,000
