spy with my little eye an unexpected item in Kristin Davis’ living room. It is a white love seat. Yes, that white love seat.

Die-hard fans of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning Sex and the City franchise would have immediately clocked it as the once-pristine piece of furniture that Charlotte York (Davis’ character) comes home to find her husband, Harry Goldenblatt (played by Evan Handler), comfortably lounging on, stark-ass naked, in the season six episode “A Woman’s Right to Shoes.” Had it been an episode of Friends, it probably would have been called “The One With All of the Tea Bags” … just so you pick up what I’m putting down.

Now, the couch (which has been cleaned of course … duh) is here, 20 years later, looking picture-perfect in Davis’ Los Angeles home, surrounded by wood-paneled, floor-to-ceiling doors, tiled floors, and more white furniture. It’s almost as if a bare ass had never touched it. But what, pray tell, is it doing here?

It’s a good question, but the answer is even better. Contractually, Davis was able to take whatever the hell she wanted from the Sex and the City set, inclusive of clothes. “It’s in our contracts that we could keep anything we wanted from the set. We were very smart to do that,” she says with a smile. But before you go pea green with envy (I mean, you still will, but this might make it slightly better), she amends, “Okay, okay, so not anything from the set necessarily, though I did take furniture, as did Sarah [Jessica Parker]. For some reason, [the set designers] didn’t want it back! I was like, What’s wrong with you guys? I’ll take it! But not all of it, of course, because where would I put it? That would be weird.”

But isn’t it ever-so-slightly weird to have a couch that your co-star put his bare cheeks on taking up prime real estate in your living room? Personally, I wouldn’t be able to look at it without thinking of Harry and his tea bags, but luckily, Davis doesn’t have the same conundrum; she’s able to separate the two, like church and state. She says diplomatically, when asked, “I don’t necessarily think of that storyline every day, but I do see that piece of furniture every day.”

It’s not as if Charlotte is missing it. First off, Charlotte is fictional. Second, if she did exist in the flesh, she would have removed the aforementioned piece of furniture a long time ago, citing it as a potential health hazard, to be traded in for something much less messy and far more expensive. And lastly, given that Davis’ former deal with HBO still stands, there are so many new items to be had on SATC’s modern-day reboot, And Just Like That… . A new couch? Who knows. But designer clothing? Oh, that’s a given.

But in as much as the reboot follows a similar formula to its OG predecessor, real talk and modern-day issues facing the City girls we know and love, now in their fifties, are the cornerstone of the reboot It is 2023 — the year of the original series’ 25th anniversary — after all. It was time to take the series from an exploration of friendship and sex to something more. And at age 58, Davis is more than qualified to showcase Charlotte’s personal growth.

In the series’ second season, which debuts June 22 on Max, Charlotte is just where we’d expect her: living on the Upper East Side, the perfect mother and wife. Her twist: her youngest daughter, Rose, gender-fluid, refers to herself as “Rock” and refuses to fit in the cookie-cutter confines of what her mother had hoped for her, starting with a refusal to take part in an event that identifies her as a woman — her bat mitzvah.

“Charlotte’s big thing is how to parent her particular children the best she can, and that’s a learning curve for her because she is the perfectionist Charlotte that we know and love. Which is not always the best mentality to have when you’re a parent, that perfectionism,” Davis says.

A bigger challenge, she says, is something she herself personally struggled with: finding herself again. “Charlotte has devoted so many years to being Harry’s wife and the kids’ mom, being a good friend, and doing everything perfectly. But at a certain point, I think most moms — that I know at least — do kind of come to a point where they’re like, ‘I’ve got to get back to me. What do I want? What am I doing?’ So that’s some of what we’re going to be seeing from Charlotte, which I relate to definitely.”

Davis was all in when Parker and director and writer Michael Patrick King came a-calling during the pandemic. “I had no idea they wanted to talk about doing a show. But then I was like, Hallelujah, let’s do this! This is the best thing that could have ever happened,” she recalls.

And she was willing to do whatever was necessary to make it work. That meant shooting for seven straight months in New York City, traveling home across the country every single weekend to be with her children — 11-year-old Gemma Rose and 5-year-old Wilson — and only spending quality time with the two most important women in her professional life on set, hunkered down on the floor of their dressing rooms armed with takeout from Nobu or somewhere equally fabulous (Parker and Nixon, being both foodies and New Yorkers, taking turns doing the ordering) and chatting into the night as best friends are wont to do at any age.

“It’s such a luxury to not only be able to work, but to work with my friends of 25 years — but seven months is a long time to shoot, and a long time to be trying to go back and forth every weekend to see my kids,” Davis confesses. “I didn’t want to take them out of school because my daughter had just started middle school. I was able to get them started with school, so at least I felt like they had a routine, and my plan was not to come back every weekend. My plan was to maybe bring them out or, you know, skip a weekend here and there, but my 5-year-old was not having it. He was mad. So, I had to come back every weekend because I just felt so guilty. But this is what happens with trying to find a work-life balance.”

The rigorous shooting schedule was dotted with unwanted paparazzi and frigid days dressing in summer clothes during the winter months, with days on set during the New York City winter so cold that no amount of lipstick could disguise the bluish tint of Davis’ lips. Then, there was the task of laying the groundwork to keep fans of the show engaged, which was not an easy one.

There was the unexplained absence of Samantha (played on SATC by Kim Cattrall), the untimely on-screen demise of Mr. Big (played by Chris Noth), and the real-life passing of Stanford Blatch’s portrayer, Willie Garson, to contend with. The writers also had to create 10 years of backstory and craft a relatable world for a show that always had somewhat of a fantastical bent. (Ahem, the wardrobe! The apartment! Carrie Bradshaw’s salary as a writer combined with her wardrobe and apartment. Just saying.)

But Davis views the second season far more optimistically than she did the first, just as Charlotte might. “We did the heavy lifting last year; that’s the good news,” she says. “We’ve created a new world, new situations for Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda. People have a lot of feelings about these situations, and I get it, but this is how life is, right? Things happen that you don’t expect to happen, and you have to figure out how to handle them.

But I would describe where we are heading into the second season as this: we don’t have to do as much heavy lifting. There are whole storylines that I have nothing to do with, kind of the way the show used to be where the four of us would split off and have our different storylines and then come together. Whereas last year, the three of us were together a lot. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.”

This new iteration of Sex and the City also introduces some new characters in Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury), Lisa Wexley (Nicole Ari

Parker), and Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez, who is playing — spoiler alert — a love interest for Miranda), but can anyone truly replace Samantha Jones? Another spoiler alert here, but, well, it doesn’t look like anyone is going to have to. The web exploded in late May with news that Cattrall would be back to reprise her role —albeit for one scene only.

Davis isn’t allowed to speak about the second season (“I can’t say anything about the season that is going to be a definitive, because I will be killed”), but she does share her take on the highly publicized contention between Parker and Cattrall that led to And Just Like That... becoming a triple act instead of a quadruple one. “The thing about all of that is that I do feel like it has been parsed and reparsed for years now, so much so that I don’t know that I have anything new to add. I will say this though: there’s a difference between the character and the person, right? I feel like fans of the show have feelings about all of us and we don’t want to disappoint people, but we can only deal with the realities of life and try to make them relatable. And I do think that it is relatable that sometimes people move out of your life or a little bit away from your life. That doesn’t mean they won’t come back, but friendships don’t always stay the same. I remember when the show was first going, everyone would be like, ‘Who has that much time to have coffee or food with their friends?’ I do feel, in my own life, there have been people that I would talk to every day: girlfriends I’d have coffee with when I was single, and others from a different phase when I was a young mom. I had other young mom friends and saw those mom friends every day because our kids were in the same play group. So, I do feel like it is relatable, just as I know that people still have feelings [about Samantha’s absence]. I totally understand, but we didn’t have a lot of choice. And we have some wonderful new friends.”

It’s all a part of that circle of life, the evolution of these sexy City girls into their older and (hopefully) wiser selves, dealing with issues like menopause, the end of a marriage, and death. It isn’t perfect, but it’s real. This is what Davis hopes will resonate with the viewers who tune in hoping to see the ladies re-engage in their sex-ploits of yesteryear … which, unfortunately, wouldn’t be relatable for all at this stage in their lives.

“We looked back on that first season, and we were like, ‘That’s really tough.’ Once we decided to do it, we were all on the phone, emailing, or texting. We were all like, ‘Let’s do this’ or ‘What about this?’ It just seemed exciting. I didn’t really think about the difficulties or the hurdles that we had to jump over in terms of kind of creating the newness around us. So, of course, the city’s the same, and we’re the same, but we did want to change and modernize the show, just as we did back in the day. This isn’t new to us. People forget that we did this before … but we remember, and we can do it again.”

handbag — each and every sartorial moment — is another window into her evolution as an actress, as a woman, as a human.

“People used to say, ‘Oh, that show is all about the fashion and the shoes.’ Well, no, actually, it was about female sexuality and friendships, about creating your own path and living your truth, not necessarily adhering to the stereotypical idea of what a woman’s life should look like. The fashion and the shoes were just the icing on the cake,” she declares.

To this day, though 20 years have passed and the women are well out of their thirties, it is still about female sexuality and friendships, but something more, too. It’s also about how paths can diverge, why perfection isn’t feasible, and how life never quite ends up the way you think it will.

Take Davis’ life as the perfect example. She nearly gave up on her dream of becoming an actor, until fate intervened and she was given the gift of Charlotte — a character who has provided her with riches, both literal and figurative, beyond her wildest dreams.

“I don’t even want to imagine my life without her,” Davis says now. She admits that before she was cast in the role, she nearly even gave up acting. “There was a moment in time where I even asked the universe to send me a sign [that I was doing the right thing by becoming an actor].”

Davis goes back in time to age 29, when she had just completed her certification to become a yoga teacher. She shares, “I got my certificate at the original YogaWorks in Santa Monica before it was on every street corner in every city in the US. My girlfriend and I — my goddaughter’s mother — were both out-of-work actresses, and she had gotten hers at the same time, so we were going to teach together. We had a little class in a karate studio during the day, and it was fun, but it wasn’t enough. I remember telling my mom that I had a timeline, that I needed something more fulfilling. I had a lightbulb moment about it, and so I said, ‘If I don’t get something substantial by this date, maybe I need to be a full-time yoga teacher.’ And then I got Melrose Place.”

Prior to playing Brooke Armstrong on Darren Star’s primetime soap, Davis had mostly done one-off gigs on shows like ER and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, with the exception of an 18-episode arc on General Hospital, but Melrose was a definitive sign that she was on the right path.

“It seemed pretty clear,” she says now, while simultaneously noting that she truly never imagined just how successful SATC would become. “If I had not gotten Sex and the City, I think I would have just been in that big pool of people who are just struggling to get work, which is hard and not necessarily even based on talent,” Davis says. Only she did get it ... but she doesn’t attribute winning the role — or the success she had following — to just one thing: “People ask me all the time what the secret to success is, but I don’t think there is a secret. If anything, it’s working as hard as you could work, being in the right place at the right time, and being ready when that right time happens. You can’t leave out either work or timing, because it’s both. If you’re not ready and that moment happens, then you’re not going to be ready to step into that spot. And even if you are ready, stepping into that spot is scary and hard.”

and just like that … I’m back to thinking about Kristin Davis’ wardrobe. To be fair, after she told me that she could keep whatever she wanted, I never really stopped. But my green-eyed monster is fully reengaged when she sighs, “Can I tell you, the major stress I have right now is where to put it all? Like, right now, my bedroom is literally covered in boxes because the second season is here, and I’m out of space. Argh!” She pauses. “I’m sorry,” she says contritely. “It sounds like a very, very bad thing to complain about, but it’s beautiful stuff, and I want to take care of it.”

I get it, because to Davis, it is much more than just “stuff.” These clothes are her history. They showcase every high and every low that both she and Charlotte have been through in their 25-year history together. Let’s just stop for a second to take in the gravity of those words, those years. Twenty-five years. Twenty-five years. Every dress, pair of shoes, and designer

Davis was ready, but to this day, she still has scars from the criticism that came — and still comes, to some degree — with being in the public eye. “I really started working at age 30 when I got the job on Melrose Place, and it was literally a place of stick-skinny women with blond hair and blue eyes, and I felt very much like, What am I doing here? It was stressful,” she recalls.

And now? She still cares about what is said about her, within reason, but at almost 60 years old, the public opinion of strangers matters a hell of a lot less.

The Melrose days might have been bad for her self-confidence, but they were nothing in comparison to the cruelty she faced in her early days playing Charlotte. Back then, the press was brutal and ruthlessly unfair in its physical depiction of her.

“All of the body shaming I’ve been subjected to for the past 25 years, pretty much until recently, [is the only bad thing about playing Charlotte],”

she confides. I express incredulity — what is there to shame? — she’s beautiful and glowing, even over Zoom, with minimal makeup and a brunette mane in tumbled waves. Even the giant, gold-rimmed granny glasses she’s wearing only serve to enhance her beauty. That said, the way we feel about ourselves is a reflection of time and place, and at one point in time, the tabloids couldn’t seem to stop calling Sarah Jessica “skinny,” while Kristin was consistently referred to as “pear-shaped.”

“[Those magazines] would [write things] like ‘Kristin’s hips are bigger than her shoulders,’ and I’m like, But they’re not! And then I’m like, Well, who cares? What if they are? But I mean, it’s just ongoing.”

And then she references one of the most personally hurtful moments. While living in Manhattan, Davis remembers walking home one night and having a craving for her cheat food: M&M’s. When she went to buy her snacks, the cashier, a woman, said, “Oh, I can’t sell you those,” Davis remembers. “And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ She goes, ‘You can’t eat those,’ and she kind of points at my hips. I was so sad. I was like, The bodega lady will not sell me M&M’s. What the heck? I cried all the way home. I walked and cried, walked and cried.”

I express outrage on her behalf, but she’s pragmatic about it now, after all this time. “I don’t mean to defend her, but if it’s in the magazines every week, it’s kind of like, Okay, you don’t know any better. This is what you’re being fed. But that was the ocean that we swam in at the time. I don’t think Cynthia [Nixon] would agree with me — she has a stronger, tougher mentality about it all — but for me, it is really hard to hear things like that, and then be told, ‘Oh, everyone should love their bodies.’ When you’ve had decades of this coming at you, it’s really hard to just be like, Yes, I’m great, I’m good. I love my body. I’m working on it obviously, and now I do care less, thank God. But also, part of the reason I care less is because when you get older, the expectations are less, in a way. Everyone wants to dissect your face, right? Then your body isn’t the feature attraction. I’m certainly not immune to it all. You try not to look at it, but it permeates things. I’ve definitely cried. I’ve definitely had what you would call ‘disordered eating’ over the years, but I’m good now. I’ve been working on myself. And that is one thing you learn from doing it for a long time: you go, Here I am! This is me! That does come with time. And it’s true: here I am, and I am not perfect. I shouldn’t have to say that, but I’m happy to.”

It’s a powerful realization to have at any age — that perfection doesn’t exist, and that she doesn’t need it to. That she’s finally stopped giving a shit feels great. And with that freedom, she’s allowed all of her choices to simply be the right ones. Okay, so right now, she’s too busy to actually focus on herself — she’d like more time to take a bubble bath or read a book — but that means she does have the time to work with her friends, take her daughter to riding lessons on the weekends, and do yoga when she can. And it was all because she followed the right path.

“I’m just really lucky in that I always knew what I wanted to do, so I didn’t have that angst of trying to find myself. I didn’t really have that phase. I already had a very myopically focused viewpoint of what I wanted to do. It wasn’t what I’ve ended up doing, which was regional theater; that was the ceiling that I set for myself, regional theater and maybe Broadway if I was lucky.”

Luckiest of all, of course, was getting cast as Charlotte. She knows how different her life might have looked had she not been cast in the role, and as such, has never, ever regretted accepting it. “I mean, there were definitely times where I was like, Oh, I guess no one is going to cast me as like a cop or whatever. But then I was like, Oh, whatever … you know what I mean? Like, how can you control that? You can’t. And I love Charlotte. If I didn’t like Charlotte, it would be different, obviously.”

It’s hard not to love the character to whom she owes her best supporting actress nominations for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe; her two Screen Actors Guild Awards with her co-stars; and the visibility that has led to countless roles, inclusive of films like Couples Retreat and Deck the Halls as well as theater projects such as Gore Vidal’s Tony Award-nominated play, The Best Man. She has been able to make a difference because of her platform, serving as a patron to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and as a goodwill ambassador with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), the UN Refugee Agency.

Also, it’s hard to dislike someone that’s a part of you, and Charlotte has become more like Davis as time has gone on (not vice versa). Davis loves her optimism, how she fusses over friends and family, and her inherent goodness. But as for her favorite moments in Charlotte’s history? Well, those are much more recent. The first she recalls was from a table read for the second season of And Just Like That… . She can’t share the story due to her NDA, but she will say it is a storyline so funny that she and her costars literally fell out of their chairs while reading the scene. “We couldn’t get ourselves together — at least, I couldn’t. It was so crazy hard to say those words out loud, especially in that group setting. I don’t know what came over me. I had read the script before, and I knew this was coming, but there’s a big difference between reading something so embarrassing on your own and then reading it out loud as your 50-something-yearold selves, reading these things that we might have also read when we were 35. It’s just a mind-bending, really bizarre time-travel type of weird moment and also an embarrassing topic.” (In case you, like me, are dying to know what this moment was all about, she says we are certain to know exactly what it is when we see it this season. Humph.)

Her second favorite memory revolves around the release of the first Sex and the City film in 1998. “There was a lot of anxiety about whether people would go to see it, and whether we would disappoint the studio, and all of that pressure,” she remembers, sharing, “I had gone out to buy some milk or something with the person I was dating at the time, and I had a hat on. It was nighttime, dark out. So, we’re walking down the street, and all of a sudden, I hear giggling. We see these eight women in dresses and heels going to this movie theater on the Upper West Side. And then I realized they were going to see our movie. It was so amazing to feel that support and to know that I was part of something that resonated.”

Since we’re reminiscing about the past (as one does when discussing a milestone this big), Davis shares her final thoughts on this epic 25-year journey. “I think the most interesting part is that, in the beginning, the world had low expectations for us. Like, what is this Sex show? But the craziest part is that [to this day] we still have to prove ourselves. People forget, but we were here before Bridesmaids. It was basically unheard of to have female leads on film who were not in their 20s. And the consensus back then was like, No one will go see it; no one goes to see movies with only women. And then of course, all of our wonderful fans came out; it was so much bigger than anyone thought. No one could believe that it was so successful. [The same thing happened for the second film.] Then, when the pandemic hit … we were just like, Oh, it might be done. We’re okay with that. We can let it go. But then we were like, This is so silly. We have these incredible characters and this incredible fan base and why shouldn’t our lives still be interesting over 50? If the world is telling you that, why should you just say, Okay, well, that’s fine. I’ll just live my own life and pretend like it’s really, really boring. Why?”

Why, indeed. But it’s a powerful thing to know that Davis is changing the narrative.

Legendary LA hangout La Dolce Vita is back in a big way. Although the eatery Frank Sinatra and George Raft originally opened in 1966 has new ownership in Marc Rose and Med Abrous of Call Mom (the team behind The Spare Room, Genghis Cohen, and Panorama Room), the space is still a throwback to the glory days of old Hollywood. As such, it has been reimagined with much respect to its past: the all-booth dining room and sophisticated bar area remain, though modern touches like the cheetah print carpet, muted lilac-painted brick, plush emerald walls, mirrored columns, and burled wood are new. Its vintage décor — sconces, custom stained glass, refurbished Italian chairs, estate sale artwork, and custommade replicas of the Charles Hollis Jones “Sinatra” bar stool — is a juxtaposition of the old meeting the new. Here, the staff will serve up classic cocktails, like a thrown 50/50 martini and the Flame of Love (popularized by Dean Martin), and housemade limoncello while wearing uniforms courtesy of Beverly Hills atelier Denis Frison — a golden beige wool jacket with vintage gold buttons from the original La Dolce Vita uniform, along with forest green ties and floor-length, white pleated aprons — looking like they’ve come straight from filming Scorsese’s Casino. The fare, too, is a twist on the classics. SUPERFINE PLAYA

Steve Samson of Sotto and Rossoblu fame has made his way to Silicon Beach with Superfine Playa (appropriately named for its Playa Vista location), a California osteria serving light fare with fresh, local produce. The menu, like Samson’s other eateries, has an Italian focus. Here by the beach, that means housemade pastas, wood-grilled meats and fish, and dishes highlighting produce from the local Playa Vista Farmers Market accompanied by a fullservice bar with craft cocktails and a wine list focused on family growers and winemakers. Hospitality powerhouse Ian Schrager has built the spot to beat in Madrid in his Madrid Edition, a property that embodies and highlights the best of this Spanish capital city’s architecture, refined culture, impressive art, culinary history, and insatiable love of the good life. This 200-room hotel on the Plaza de las Descalzas truly gets it right, echoing the vibrancy of the city itself and Schrager’s bid to offer the best of the best. Here, that means culinary concepts by chef partners Enrique Olvera, whose Mexico City restaurant Pujol is one of the top ten World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and Diego Muñoz, who led acclaimed restaurant Astrid & Gastón in Lima to victory in the top spot on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Jerónimo, from the former, offers global cuisine heavily influenced by Mexico’s traditional culinary roots in a multilayered space distinguished by carved dark oak wall panels, bright yellow leather chairs and banquettes, and two alabaster and plaster pendant lights by designer Emmanuel Levet Stenne leading down to two lounge areas. NOBU HOTEL SEVILLA

Sevilla is the latest feather in Nobu Matsuhisa’s proverbial cap. The chef, hotelier, and restaurateur’s serene new property at Plaza de San Francisco, the Andalusian capital’s historic center, occupies two early-20th-century residential buildings lovingly restored to enhance their traditional architecture. Though small, featuring only 25 stylish guest rooms and suites, the grand-feeling property has an expansive rooftop terrace with a swimming pool and dining area that boasts spectacular views of the Cathedral and Giralda. The heart of the project, needless to say, is Matsuhisa’s signature Nobu restaurant, which is perfectly positioned with views of the Roman wall built by Julius Caesar and discovered during the renovation. That said, the hotel’s design pays tribute to Nobu’s distinctly Japanese roots, just as all the hotels under his umbrella do, yet still echoes the local Sevillian style. Elements of the historic buildings have been preserved, with the hotel being designed around them, from the central glass courtyard to the staircase adorned with authentic tiles from the early 20th century. Ah, Marbella, the hidden gem of Europe! This Spanish destination may be lesser known than its robust brethren, Barcelona and Madrid, but it’s seriously mighty thanks to a unique microclimate that offers perfect weather yearround. And while there are many gorgeous hotels, our recommendation is the Puente Romano Beach Resort, a property founded by a prince (Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, the founder of the iconic and still thriving Marbella Club). There are over 100 different activities available to guests, from master classes with expert sommeliers to horseback riding in El Tajo. As you may imagine about a resort with 20 restaurants, gastronomy is a focus here. These restaurants include Leña, Dani García’s steak house, recently voted the most beautiful restaurant in the world; the effortless perfection of Nobu Marbella; the beachside Chiringuito Puente Romano; and the sensational SupperClub. As of this year, there are also two new world-class culinary experiences in Cipriani, the brand’s first opening on the Spanish peninsula, and Coya, which is inspired by the oldest bars in Lima to provide a luxurious and flavorful experience. Puente Romano is also home to a Six Senses Spa, which goes above and beyond in the wellness department with a hydrotherapy pool, cold plunge pool, herbal steam room, sauna, and hammam. The resort has also partnered with Hogo to offer sleep coach services, a first for the Mediterranean. In addition, it has a new partnership with award-winning, organically grown CBD wellness brand Kloris to launch an exclusive treatment.

PUNTA TRAGARA

Glitz and glamour, thy name is Capri. Known for its limoncello, luxury, and star-spotting, this small but mighty, sun-soaked island off the coast of Naples is a favored celebrity haunt for a reason. (Its epic beaches, such as Faraglioni, are a must for the rich and famous.) And here, the place to stay for those who want to get away from it all is Punta Tragara. This lovely resort offers a beautiful setting just a short distance from the historic town center, with white-washed décor, views of the sea and Faraglioni rock formations, and a wellness-inspired spa. It is also home to the Michelin-starred, Mediterranean-focused Caprese restaurant Le Monzù, an eatery with a significant pedigree and a setting to match: its view — a view of the Gulf of Naples and a glimpse of Capri’s center square, best enjoyed during sunset — will make you sigh with happiness. And while in Capri, make sure to stop by Ristorante Mammà, one of Capri’s not-so-hidden treasures. The interiors are styled down to the last detail to showcase the amazing views, and the wonders of the Mediterranean are just waiting to be rediscovered in the colors, aromas, and flavors on each plate. Also necessary for a visit: the iconic Tiberio Palace, where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby. Its restaurant, Terrazza Tiberio, offers some of the best views of Capri, as well as the healthiest and most genuine ingredients of Caprese cuisine, such as mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and aromatic herbs that blend with more unexpected fare such as ginger, tosatsu, and Norwegian salmon, creating contrasts with unique flavors.Its on-site bar, Jacky’s, is a must too, serving up awardworthy cocktails made with gold, tinctures, and more. Who doesn’t love a good Roman holiday? Live the true dolce vita in the Eternal City at the five-star Westin Excelsior, Rome, a beautiful hotel in a prime location just a few minutes away from the Spanish Steps and Borghese Gardens. Built in 1906 in Via Veneto, this classic property is still one of the most prestigious in the city, with opulent suites to match. Its crown jewel, at over 8,000 square feet, is Villa La Cupola, which is among the largest suites in Europe. If there’s an actual heaven on earth, it looks a lot like Taormina. This stunning hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily is known for its proximity to the active volcano Mount Etna; sandy beaches leading out to the crystal blue sea; winding cobblestone streets; and Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater that still runs today. It’s one of the most romantic places in the world, and, as such, requires a properly romantic place to stay. VRetreats has successfully captured the vibe of the island in its two five-star properties, both of which have an oceanic feel despite being located in two distinctly different locations. The 76-room Mazzarò Sea Palace is located on one of the most storied coastlines in the Mediterranean, with its own private beach exclusive to hotel guests, a state-of-the-art wellness center, an elevated Sicilian eatery in Blum, and luxe suites with heated plunge pools. Meanwhile, elegantly minimalist sister resort Atlantis Bay is situated on Baia delle Sirene, or “Mermaids Bay,” among the romantic alleyways of Taormina. Discover one of the most beautiful new hotels in the world in Lisbon at The Ivens, a sexy, sultry boutique hotel that caters to the globe-trotting adventurer. The newly opened Yi Hotel Mykonos is offering travelers calm from the storm that is Mykonos, one of the biggest party spots in Europe come summer. The 41-room boutique hotel, which is nestled on the hilltop of Elia Beach and overlooks the Aegean Sea, is inviting in that it offers a variety of experiences, all uniquely Mykonian. The name “Yi” — meaning “earth” and “land” in Greek and “one” in Japanese — reflects its minimalist, simple, and modern style, illustrating the interconnectivity between the elements of earth, wind, fire, and water. The property is dotted with curved walls, airy openings, and statement furniture in a neutral color palette, with materials inclusive of woods, straw, and terra cotta punctuated by accents of colors pulled from nature, such as glass tinted blue like the sea, pistachio-colored doors, and windows with a color similar to that of an olive tree. Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance

IT MAY SURPRISE YOU TO LEARN THAT LUCID GROUP INC., THE COMPANY behind one of the newest luxury all-electric vehicles, is based in the city of Newark, California. That location is across the bay from San Francisco, northeast of Stanford and the numerous high-tech companies for which the area is known — appropriate given that the technology behind the company’s cars is as envelope-stretching as anything coming out of Silicon Valley. And Lucid’s CEO and chief technology officer, Peter Rawlinson, has previously held numerous noteworthy positions according to the corporate website: vice president of vehicle engineering at Tesla and chief engineer of the Model S, head of vehicle engineering at Corus Automotive, chief engineer at Lotus Cars, and principal engineer at Jaguar Cars. Sounds like a perfect resume for a cutting-edge company manufacturing high-end electric cars.

It also may surprise you that, after the car is designed in California, it is manufactured in Arizona. (You probably thought I was going to name an offshore location.)

All Lucid Airs have the same basic body style — they all are four-door cars with room for a driver and five passengers (four passengers if you opt for Executive Rear Seating with plush reclining seats). And because Lucid has the only vehicle with a windshield glass that seamlessly extends into the roof all the way to the back (though some Lucids currently are offered only with a metal roof), the model name “Air” is apt given the open view afforded to all occupants.

“My” Lucid Air was the Grand Touring Performance model, so that bumped the base price from $138,000 (for the Air Grand Touring) up to $179,000. But there were also a few other “bumps” — 1,050 horsepower (up from 819 horsepower for the non-Performance version — woohoo!) and 0-60 in 2.6 seconds — but the range dropped slightly to 446 miles.. If I were the buyer, I would seriously consider the approximately $41,000 bump in price, even with slightly less range, to get the dramatic increase in performance. And I would pay extra still if there were an audio option that would let the occupants and passersby hear the “engine” sound, especially if the song were of a flat-plane V-8 at full honk.

I was lucky enough to have the luxurious Lucid for a week (the period just after Christmas through just after New Year’s) and was able to drive it to The Resort at Pelican Hill. The Lucid fits in really well at high-end locales, and judging by the Concours d’Valets (which is the only one that counts), the Lucid was a winner. (I could tell because they moved other cars so that the Lucid would be in the first parking spot.) Since the back seats fold flat, the Lucid is a wonderful travel car for two people with luggage, as it easily held everything that we brought.

I didn’t really know what to expect when I first drove the Grand Touring Performance model. I have owned or leased electric cars for many years (starting with BMW’s experimental all-electric MINI-E in 2009) and love the feeling of immediate torque and heavy regenerative braking, but the increase in power, additional regen, and great fit and finish are what Lucid provides in great abundance. The Air does not feel like a newly developed car, as it is so well thought out and so well built that it feels like it’s been in production for years. I thought that a glass roof would provide too much heat gain and brightness, but I was pleasantly surprised that I had no issues with either, likely due to Lucid’s “heat and sunlight blocking technology.” Although beauty is clearly in the eye of the beholder, I liked the Air’s looks, coming and going — Lucid was very successful in differentiating the car’s appearance without being too gimmicky or annoying. I also enjoyed the fact that there was a lot of tech in the car and in the front and back lighting, which is fitting for a “car of the future.”

I expect that Lucid will do well in the coming years, as the company’s ability to satisfy the needs of the buyers of luxury electric cars is great. I look forward to experiencing the carmaker’s Gravity SUV and to seeing what they come up with in the future. Lucid has shown rare talent in building a car that ticks all of the boxes and delivers all that it promises.

REMEMBER WAY BACK IN YESTERYEAR, WHEN THE WORLD WAS atwitter (if one is allowed to use that word without paying a royalty) about anyone even considering building a luxury SUV? After all, Travelalls and Suburbans aside, starting in the late 1930s, the big SUVs were really more utilitarian, truck-like vehicles. With the rechristening of these tall station wagons as sport utility vehicles starting some four decades ago, they began to hit their stride. But when Lexus created the RX 300 in 1998 as the first luxury crossover vehicle and Porsche decided in 2002 to show the world what a luxury performance SUV could be like, buyers were intrigued. A few years later, however, the whole segment exploded in popularity; the International Energy Agency reports that, last year, almost 46% of all passenger cars sold in the world were SUVs.

In 2015, Bentley introduced its luxury SUV, the Bentayga (named after a high rock outcropping on Gran Canaria, one of the Canary Islands), and within one year, it became the company’s top-selling model.

Some of the Bentayga models come with a choice of engines; others come with only one motor option. But all of their engines basically belong in one of these three categories: W12 (Speed only), V-8, or hybrid. All Bentaygas have all-wheel drive (AWD), and all utilize an eight-speed transmission.

The base prices for the Bentaygas range from about $200,000 to about $270,000, but most buyers will opt for at least a few add-ons.

While it’s true that the Bentayga shares its basic engineering and design with its Volkswagen cousins, the Audi Q8 and the Lamborghini Urus, Bentayga focuses its attention on luxurious appointments, impeccable fit and finish, and a smooth yet powerful experience for both the driver and passenger.

“My” Bentley SUV for the week was a gorgeous EWB Azure in stunning Portofino Blue with a Saddle main hide (brown leather seats, door inserts, and a few other bits) and Beluga secondary hide (black leather dash, seat backs, and most other areas). The EWB Azure offers only one motor choice: a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 pumping out 542 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque, which are good enough to motivate the long SUV from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and to a top speed of 180 mph — with that maximum velocity, you and four friends can haul yourselves and your clubs to the course and play 18; you can then drop off your friends, get your groceries, and get arrested on the way home -— all on the same day.

to the experience … plus about $40,000 in extra choices. The biggest ticket was $11,195 for the Blackline Specification, where most of the otherwisechrome bits are rendered in black metal. The Naim high-end sound system added another $9,150, and the Touring Specification added $8,815 for some must-haves, including adaptive cruise control, head-up display, night vision, lane assist, and traffic assist.

What I love about the Bentayga is that it is unmistakably a Bentley. Having driven most of the company’s models (including the GTs in Scotland, the Bentayga hybrids and newer GTs in Napa and Silicon Valley, and the Flying Spur in Monaco), I know that they are consistently elegant and extremely well finished. Everything that the eyes see or that the hands touch is made of quality materials. For example, many of the dash knobs are knurled (with small crisscrossed ridges) and feel like heavy steel — there’s not much plastic to be found anywhere. The leather seats and trim are supple, very supportive, and infinitely adjustable (thanks to 12 motors and three pneumatic valves). And Bentley’s postural adjustment system contains both motors and pneumatic activation zones.

Did I enjoy my time with the Azure? Absolutely. It’s fast, comfortable, quiet, spacious, intriguing, and it fit in beautifully everywhere I went. Bentley points out that, when the extremely comfortable seats are coupled with the onboard fragrance and air purifier to provide the occupant a feeling of exceptional comfort, the Azure offers “a true sense of sanctuary and unique wellness features.” I doubt that means that you can deduct the cost of one as a medical expense, but I can attest that, after many miles at the wheel, I felt as rested as I was when we started.

The ultimate multihyphenate, Daur has been at the forefront of the fashion industry, designing her own destiny as an international content creator, tastemaker, and style icon. She is multifaceted — she is intentional yet extremely creative; at any given moment, her finger is on the pulse, but she also carries a quiet humility. So, it is no surprise that she has garnered the attention of millions, and at the helm of a rapidly shifting industry, Daur has a perspective that remains one of curiosity.

“My German teacher always said (although, admittedly, he was referring to language, not this industry), ‘If something isn’t changing, it’s dying’ — I can assure you, content creation is very much alive. In fact, it has undergone a shift that has brought about a refreshing air of informality,” Daur admits. “Social media isn’t as picture-perfect as it once was; it’s gotten more casual. [Case in point]: my profile. Nowadays, I post images that would have made my 19-year-old self say ‘You can’t post that’ or ‘Watch your digital footprint.’ But content creation, across all platforms, has come into an era of authenticity and self-deprecation — in a good way.”

Daur has built a platform dedicated to being authentic and intentional, using style as her mechanism. Today, Daur works with major luxury fashion brands like Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton and travels the world, attending the likes of the Cannes Film Festival and sitting in the front row at a Gucci runway show in Seoul. Fashion has always been used as a form of escapism from the world, and Daur’s platform allows her viewers to connect and escape with her on her extraordinary adventures.

Offering a rare look into the dynamic world of content creation, Daur explains that the relationship between content creation and high-end brands continues to intertwine and amplify one another. “With social media, we’ve seen the emergence of an entirely new stage — one that has evolved and matured at a fast pace. Luxury brands use this platform to showcase their work through creative and compelling content. It has shifted from mostly massive OOH [out-of-home advertising] campaigns, requiring teams of people and much larger budgets, to engaging Instagram posts that exude an effortless, real-life feel. The result is accessibility and intimacy in the luxury space. It’s a thrilling time to be involved in the intersection of content creation and luxury marketing.”

Even though Daur has a decade’s worth of work and experiences under her proverbial belt, she still has “pinch me” moments. “There have been many moments in my career where I found myself asking, Is this even real life? And then, before I know it, another opportunity comes along, and I’m swept up in a whirlwind of excitement.”

Some of Daur’s most cherished career milestones include two nominations for the British Fashion Awards and being chosen as an LVMH expert alongside icons like Edward Enninful. In addition, she’s found herself on set with some of the industry’s most renowned fashion photographers, including Peter Lindbergh. Daur has also evolved her career beyond fashion, creating Daurpower, her fitness e-book that has become a project that fills her with immense pride.

Perhaps tonight is a night that she will add to her list of career pinch-me moments as she dazzles in diamonds in every girl’s dream jewelry store while night falls over New York City. “Working with Tiffany & Co. has been a dream come true,” she exclaims with a smile spread across her face. “When you think about jewelry, the Tiffany & Co. iconic blue box is the first thing that comes to mind, right?”

can hold so much sentimental value,” Daur explains. “There are pieces my mother wears that have been in my family for years, which is crazy because that piece existed way before us. To me, [jewelry is] a reminder of where we came from and the people who came before us.”

Daur’s deeper connection is real. During our photo shoot, the styling of the jewels comes as second nature to her as she seamlessly pairs cuffs with earrings and interchanges necklaces until it feels just right. Her innate connection to Tiffany & Co. is evident. “For me, Tiffany & Co. is the epitome of jewelry. I remember my first Tiffany & Co. present,” she recalls. “It was Christmas about 11 years ago when I saw the little blue box under our Christmas tree. I instantly knew what it was. And when I wore that heart-shaped necklace to dinner the next day, I felt like a million bucks. That’s the magic of Tiffany.”

Though her first-ever Tiffany & Co. piece — the Return to Tiffany heart tag pendant — will always hold a special, sentimental place in her heart, today, she has several favorites. And the same could be said about Daur. [But], simultaneously, I remain open to new possibilities — after all, who knows what the future may hold?”

For Daur, the possibilities are endless as she stays on the course of dreaming and achieving. “You might see me launching a brand or perhaps even venturing into the world of podcasting,” she teases. “I might even open my own store! I’m excited to see where my passions take me next.”

In the immediate future, Daur is still mapping out her summer plans. “Change is the only constant in my world, and my plans are no exception. I like to keep my schedule open-ended, and as a result, my calendar is decorated with the acronyms ‘TBC’ and ‘TBD.’ I find it exhilarating to embrace spontaneity, and I’m not one to plan my life down to the minute.”

Adding spontaneity to our list of defining adjectives of Daur’s charm, we can’t help but wonder how she seemingly manages to do it all. “I have learned that the key to managing a busy travel schedule is to approach it with a sense of adventure and a willingness to adapt to the unexpected,” she admits. “When it comes to staying grounded amidst all the madness, I must say it’s all about balance. For one, I prioritize self-care and make sure to make time for things that help me feel good.”

Daur’s sense of self is inspiring. The cover shoot goes well into the night (admittedly into the wee hours of the morning), but never does she lose her tenacity or charm. Time manages to slip away, and her passion for creating consumes the shoot. “Working in this industry has taught me a lot — I think it’s important to not take yourself too seriously,” she says, once again shifting everything into perspective.

We’re on the last shot; Daur is overlooking the focal point of The Landmark — the staircase — her head held with pride as she smiles at the camera, covered in diamonds, and suddenly the overarching theme of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s dawns on me. Like Daur, Audrey Hepburn’s character, Holly Golightly, moves through the world as an independent woman who will not sacrifice her individuality yet also cherishes the beauty of human connection — an undeniable parallel that Daur has written into her evening at Tiffany’s.

The Top FOUR Plastic Surgeries Trending Among Men

DID YOU KNOW THAT PLASTIC SURGERY IS NOT JUST FOR WOMEN?

In fact, men are getting in on the action, too. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2020 alone, over 289,000 procedures were done on men. And that is not all! There were also more than 820,000 minimally invasive procedures, like Botox and laser treatments, that same year. So, what are the most popular procedures for men, you ask? Haute Beauty expert Dr. S. Alexander Earle reviews the four hautest surgeries for men: liposuction, rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, and blepharoplasty.

1. LIPOSUCTION

The procedure most requested by men at Pure Plastic Surgery is liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or body contouring. This surgical procedure permanently removes fat cells from specific areas of the body to help reshape and create a more contoured silhouette. With liposuction, areas commonly contoured for men include hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, abdomen, neck, cheeks, upper arms, and under the chin. You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you are already at or near your ideal weight with positive eating habits and exercise routines. During consultations, we ask patients to avoid significant weight gain post-surgery to maintain optimal results and avoid additional rounds.

What are the four types of liposuction procedures?

An ultrasound-assisted liposuction surgery turns fat cells into a liquid using ultrasonic vibrations. Once the cells are liquified, they are vacuumed out of the body either with a heated cannula below the skin’s surface or by using an emitter above the surface of the skin.

Tumescent liposuction (fluid injection) requires the surgeon to inject a medicated anesthetic solution and a salt solution into the areas targeted for fat removal. It is the most common type of liposuction and can take the longest.

The super-wet technique is similar to tumescent liposuction; however, it does not use as much fluid. This technique does not take as much time as tumescent liposuction, and the amount of fluid that is injected is equal to the amount of fat that will be removed from the site. This procedure may require sedation or general anesthesia.

During laser-assisted liposuction, a laser is used to liquify the fat cells, which are then vacuumed out or drained through small tubes. This procedure uses a small cannula and is often performed on smaller areas on the face, such as the chin and cheek areas.

Can abdominal etching be done during liposuction?

Many of our male patients opt for ab etching as a part of their liposuction procedure. Often, these patients find that even with a healthy diet and rigorous exercise, they are unable to achieve abdominal definition.

2. RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty surgery, commonly called a “nose job,” is performed to change the appearance of the nose and can also be done to improve breathing or lessen other nasal complications. For some, a nose job is purely for cosmetic purposes, and for others, it can be sought to improve nasal issues, correct birth defects, or repair injuries. Rhinoplasty can target cartilage in the lower portion of the nose and bone in the upper area, and it can also change the skin on the nose. Each surgery is unique and customized to meet the goals of the patient while taking into consideration the shape of the face and often ethnicity.

What is ethnic rhinoplasty?

Patients of non-Caucasian descent may request an ethnic rhinoplasty, which is nasal surgery that changes the nose while preserving cultural features. As with all rhinoplasties, no two surgeries are the same, including those for patients of the same ethnic groups. However, we’ve found that aesthetic preferences are often shared by patients of the same ethnicity, and we take that into consideration when we perform an African American rhinoplasty, a Hispanic rhinoplasty, a Middle Eastern rhinoplasty, or an Asian rhinoplasty.

What can you change about the nose during a rhinoplasty?

• Redefine a dorsal hump: create a straight nasal bridge or a curved nasal bridge

• Narrow the nasal bridge: lessen the nasal bridge to improve nasal-facial balance

• Raise the nose ridge: give height to a “flat” nose

• Narrow the nostrils: for large or flared nostrils, decrease the base of the nose

• Resolve nasal breathing issues: enhance breathing by correcting a deviated septum and other nasal issues

• Enhance the nasal tip: improve nasal tip projection

3. ABDOMINOPLASTY

An abdominoplasty, also known as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure that can tighten the abdominal wall and remove loose skin and fat on the abdomen. Each patient will decide which tummy tuck procedure will help them achieve their body goals.

After aging or significant weight loss, some men find it difficult to choose between a full and a mini tummy tuck. Both procedures can offer results that are sometimes unachievable through exercise alone.

What is a mini tummy tuck?

A mini or partial tummy tuck is the less invasive of the two options and is often paired with abdominal liposuction. This procedure works best for men who only have excess loose skin below the belly button. For those who have

loose skin and stretch marks above the belly button, this may not be the right tummy tuck procedure, as it will not correct that area. The recovery time for the mini tuck is shorter than for a full tummy tuck.

What is a full tummy tuck?

For men who have significant abdominal wall damage, loose skin, excess fat, and stretch marks above the belly button, a full tummy tuck may be the most suitable option. A full tummy tuck surgery involves tightening the abdominal muscles, removing excess skin and fat, and performing liposuction to the flank areas. The procedure may also involve repairing the belly button, which may require repositioning and total reconstruction. The end result is a more defined and contoured appearance.

It is important to note that the recovery time for a full tummy tuck is longer than that of a mini tummy tuck, and the size of the scar may vary depending on the amount of excess fat and skin removed during the surgery. It is also worth mentioning that results from surgery may vary, and patients are advised to adhere strictly to aftercare instructions provided by the surgeon. It is also recommended to avoid significant weight gain, as this could alter the outcome of the surgery.

4. BLEPHAROPLASTY

As men age, some notice changes to their face that may make them appear older or more tired. The eye area is one of the first places that show signs of aging. During the aging process, the skin around the upper and lower eyes may lose elasticity and begin to sag. When there is excess skin on the upper eyelids, it can hang over the eye area and lashes, obstructing vision and causing the upper lids to feel heavy. If there is excess skin on the lower eyelids, it can create wrinkles and deep lines in the skin.

If you notice that the skin around the eyes is bulging or it looks like the lids are retaining fluid, it could be the result of weakened membranes — those that usually hold fat in place from the skull — that have allowed fat to move forward into the lids, causing bulging.

Blepharoplasty is the medical term for eyelid surgery or an eyelift. It can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids and, in some patients, both

the upper and lower lids. The procedure removes excess skin and reduces bagginess around the eyes. While this surgery is mostly done for cosmetic reasons, it can be ordered by an ophthalmologist for patients whose sagging or bulging upper eyelids are impairing their vision. A blepharoplasty can be performed alone or with laser resurfacing, forehead lifts, filler injections, such as Botox, and various face-lift procedures.

How long does it take to recover from blepharoplasty?

After a few days, most patients can resume normal activity, including driving. The eyes may be sensitive after surgery, and avoiding the sun and UV exposure is best until the incisions have completely healed. If you have stitches placed in your eyelids, they will stay in place for up to one week. For up to two weeks, patients may experience dry eyes, which is completely normal. If symptoms of dry eyes last longer than two weeks, please contact your surgeon right away. Your eyelids should look normal after four to six weeks as the swelling subsides.

How long do blepharoplasty results last?

A lift to the upper eyelids may last for five to 10 years, and lower eyelids can last indefinitely depending on your age and skin elasticity. It is possible for eyelids to sag again due to the natural process of aging.

You may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty if …

• you are in good health and are 35 years or older

• you are over 18 and under 35 years old, and droopy or saggy eyelids run in your family

• the skin on your upper and/or lower lids is sagging and obstructing vision or causing the eyes to feel heavy

• your eyelids look like they are retaining fluid or have a buildup of fat deposits

• you have tried topical solutions, lasers, or injections that have not worked

• you have a realistic idea of blepharoplasty outcomes

• you can take off work and refrain from strenuous activities, including driving, for several days

Plastic surgery is constantly evolving, and I’m dedicated to staying at the forefront. Attending conferences, online learning, and surgical observation are essential for continuous improvement. Traveling allows me to witness global approaches to facial plastic surgery and teach at conferences worldwide. Collaborating with top surgeons has been invaluable. Thanks to my commitment to learning, I’ve developed an innovative deep face-lift/neck-lift procedure without postoperative drains. This results in faster healing, natural results, and minimal side effects. In 2008, I published the first article on the deep plane face-lift without a drain in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, and since then, my hematoma rate (a very common side effect of face-lifts) is less than 2%, versus the general hematoma rate of 10%. This is something that I’m known for among my colleagues — but the irony is that without taking advantage of opportunities to observe and learn from them, the innovations I’ve developed would not be possible.

Complete Compensation For Burn Injuries

BURNS ARE SOME OF THE MOST DEVASTATING INJURIES THAT A PERSON CAN EXPERIENCE. DOCTORS SAY burn injuries are the single most difficult to treat because they can damage every part of the body and its systems, and often they affect many. These injuries can be caused by fire, scalding water, chemicals, radiation, or electricity. They can be severe and can lead to permanent or long-term physical and emotional pain.

Severe burn injuries can increase the risk for all types of cancer; they can also cause cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases, nervous system and musculoskeletal disorders, diabetes, infections, scarring, loss of muscle strength, loss of muscle mass, and loss of bone density. Burn injuries can have a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life and well-being. Resulting ailments can cause chronic, persistent pain, which can lead to fatigue; both could eventually decrease the enjoyment of life. The road to recovery can include expensive medical treatments and rehabilitation, and in some instances, lifetime care is required. Survivors should be fully compensated — for all damages.

DETERMINING FULL COMPENSATION FOR A BURN INJURY

Full compensation must include both “economic” (or monetary) losses and “non-economic” (or “pain and suffering”) damages. In some situations, as allowed by state law and depending on the conduct or failure of the at-fault party or entity, punitive damages (to punish the wrongdoer) may be available to a survivor.

Economic damages are measurable costs, including medical bills and lost income. Burn treatment is very expensive. The expense can, and often does, continue for years and even throughout the patient’s life. Medical procedures such as plastic and reconstructive surgeries can continue decades after the burn has occurred.

An experienced attorney will engage a life-care planner to calculate the value of these expenses. A life-care planner calculates all relevant future medical costs and other non-medical costs. Medical care can include plastic surgery, dermatology, pain management, massage therapy, laser therapy, steroid use, physical and occupational therapy, neuropsychological services, psychiatric counseling, home-health services, medicines, and diagnostic costs such as X-rays and MRIs. Non-medical costs can include charges for wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, cushions, ramps, compression garments, special footwear, bedsheets, pressure mattresses, sprays, ointments, sun-protective clothing, transportation costs for medical care, and much, much more.

Burn injuries often have a significant impact on earnings, and losses must be included in the calculations for full compensation. The ability to work can be impacted by a resulting amputation, loss of range of motion, severe disfigurement, loss of sight or hearing, and other damage. Even though the patient may appear to make a “complete” recovery, these are often real consequences that can affect earnings and the ability to work. Future employment may

be impossible, particularly if the patient’s previous work involved physical activity. However, if a return to work is possible, life-care planning can include job retraining costs.

Additionally, non-economic losses must be included for a complete evaluation of damages. The true and full extent of suffering — physical and psychological — must be considered. Clearly, burn survivors can experience pain — often horrible pain — because nerve endings were exposed and damaged when skin was burned away. There can be frequent and continuous pain from tissue damage and from irritation of these tissues during necessary procedures, such as dressing changes and splinting. As survivors unfortunately know, early skin-grafting procedures are extremely painful. The grafting procedure leaves the donor site with a painful injury causing new second-degree-type burns. And if the patient does not have enough unburned skin to use for grafting, other types of skin or coverings may be used to temporarily close the wound. What psychological effect does this have on someone who knows they have something other than their own skin as part of their body?

Early on after a burn, survivors are likely forced to deal with numerous surgeries and painful dressing changes. Severe burns involving 20% or more of the body are difficult to manage medically in a single instance; the patient therefore would require multiple surgical procedures. How many procedures can someone endure before they become numb, or start to wonder when, or if, their trauma will end?

Emotional and psychological issues abound for burn survivors and must be included in calculations for full compensation. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not uncommon for survivors with serious and/or permanent burn injuries. Additional issues include major depression, loss of confidence, loss of self-esteem, sleep difficulties, flashbacks, irritability, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, negative self-thoughts, loss of relationships or loss of intimacy, and social withdrawal. Survivors’ enjoyment of life can suffer significantly.

Compensation must account for the fact that a survivor’s ordeal is often far from over once they return home. While a patient’s wounds are still healing, regular painful dressing changes are required, and the patient must undergo both physical and occupational therapy. Many survivors experience frightening flashbacks, and they are reluctant to start any necessary counseling despite symptoms such as anger, anxiety, and fear, which can be intense and all-consuming. Who wants to relive excruciating memories? Compensation must include these continuing issues.

When burn injuries are visible, especially on the face, patients are particularly vulnerable to psychological complications. “Looks” or insensitive comments, particularly from peers or co-workers, can make survivors feel diminished. And what about not wanting to be in family photographs? There are also losses associated with childcare if the survivor is a parent of minor children. Not being able to accompany children to activities or help with homework is upsetting to both parent and child.

APRIL 24 WAS THE KIND OF NIGHT THAT DREAMS ARE MADE of as Haute Living celebrated cover star Rob Lowe at the Malibu home of Grant and Elena Cardone. Navier and South African artist Johnathan Schultz joined in the festivities in support of Unstable, the Netflix series that Lowe produced, wrote, directed, and stars in alongside son John Owen, who also attended the event. At the dinner, the cover star was also joined by his wife Sheryl Berkoff and eldest son Matthew as well as his Holiday in the Wild co-star Kristin Davis. After a cocktail reception, Haute Media Group Senior Vice President April Donelson introduced Grant Cardone, who is known as the No. 1 sales trainer in the world and is an internationally renowned speaker on leadership, real estate investing, entrepreneurship, social media, and finance. Cardone spoke about Lowe’s greatness before guests sat down to a four-course meal prepared by caterer Jennifer Naylor. Before dessert, Sampriti Bhattacharyya — CEO and founder of Navier, an electric hydrofoil luxury boat line funded by multiple tech moguls, including Google co-founder Sergey Brin — gave a speech about Lowe’s innovations.
