livia Culpo will be the first to admit she’s totally Type A. What’s more, she’s proud that perfectionism defines her character: Determination and drive have led to her dream job(s), after all. The former Miss Universe has had a pretty staggering 2018 by anyone’s standards, including her own. She’s become a Hollywood leading lady and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue rookie, scored her first TV series, collaborated on a fashion line and is launching her first beauty product later this year. Though it appears like her star has risen meteorically overnight, in fact, it’s been a steady ascent since she took home the ultimate pageant crown in 2012. In the past six years, she’s shot several feature fashion campaigns, opened a restaurant, starred in a music video and became the face of Timex, as well as a brand ambassador for Nine West, Samsung and Revolve/FWRD. She also somehow finds time to fit in a plethora of charitable commitments with organizations like Best Buddies, Pencils of Promise, Project Sunshine and amfAR. By taking on so much, it may seem like she’s casting a wide net and seeing what catches her interest, but she assures us that her choices have definitely been deliberate. “I love everything that I’m doing. I know I’m doing a lot, but it’s all stuff that I’m passionate about,” she maintains. She ticks off her passions one by one, from acting to modeling to designing, each a bit reverently. And yet, there is no one particular career focus among her many available outlets. “Honestly, it depends on the day,” she says. “I love being able to switch it up. I’m the kind of person who likes change, and I’ll tell you, every day is different; nothing is ever the same.” The next few months in particular are destined to be radically different. She’s following up her first foray into fashion design—a capsule collection for Revolve with Marled by Reunited Clothing that sold out within 48 hours—by launching her first product in the makeup space, a lash item with Huda Beauty, this November. And there’s even more: Although she is certainly no stranger to red carpets, there’s a certain distinction at film premieres from going as a guest and being the star. This summer, she’ll discover that difference when her first major film, Reprisal, hits movie theaters on August 31. The action flick focuses on a veteran (Frank Grillo) suffering from
PTSD who must hunt down criminals to help his sick child, with the help of a fellow vet (Bruce Willis). Culpo plays Grillo’s wife, a hardworking mom struggling to keep her marriage intact and her diabetic daughter safe. The 26-year-old stunner was a bit overwhelmed at the opportunity to co-star with one of her favorite actors. “Being able to work with Bruce Willis was kind of a dream,” she admits. “I love his work so much. I basically [learned by] watching him do his job. Being in the presence of someone who is so good at what they do was really cool.” Despite being a silver-screen rookie—her only other credits include this year’s Amy Schumer comedy I Feel Pretty, the 2017 horror film American Satan and a bit part in 2014 comedy The Other Woman—director Brian A. Miller made sure to treat her as respectfully as an experienced star like Willis. Culpo, who took a metaphorical crash course in Type 1 diabetes when dating diabetic singer Nick Jonas for two years, was even allowed to make small but crucial, disease-pertinent edits to Bryce Hammons’ script. Then, on September 4, just four days after the wide release of Reprisal, her docuseries, Model Squad, will debut on E! Strategically, the series, which revolves around nine high-profile, in-demand models—Daniela Braga, Shanina Shaik, Devon Windsor, Caroline Lowe, Ashley Moore, Nadine Leopold, Hannah Ferguson, Ping Hue and Culpo—and how they struggle through the fashion industry, will premiere during New York Fashion Week. “The whole idea is female empowerment—girls supporting girls— and giving people an inside perspective on my life,” she says, noting, “A lot of my really close friends are on the show, and it shows [the real us]: getting drunk, not getting drunk, facing rejection and facing exhaustion… but also having a lot of fun, too.” Storylines of the series run the gamut, from parental pressure to quit the industry to the detrimental effects of modeling on relationships to Culpo’s plotline: Desperately wanting to appear in Sports Illustrated despite a rough test shoot with a celebrity photographer. It is her mission to show the real and uncut version of Olivia Culpo to the world with Model Squad, despite the fact that reality series are typically anything but. If it’s honesty viewers want, then she vows it’s honesty they’re going to get. “I wanted people to learn about what it is I do,” she says. “So many people are curious about my day-to-day life, and hopefully this will show them that it’s not always easy—show them the more raw and real side of me.” Via social media—Instagram in particular—the three million follower-strong “influencer” puts herself out there in a carefully curated way, always beautiful, always impeccably turned out. And precisely because she presents this version of herself to the world, it’s easy for those to think they know her… which isn’t always a good thing. “There are always things people say that are either completely false or things people think just because they don’t know you. I have a pretty good handle on when that happens. If there’s absolutely no truth to it, I don’t even think about it, I just think, ‘This person’s insane,’” she says (“insane” and “crazy” also being words she also used to address the rumor that she was saving herself until marriage). “But if there is a little bit of truth to it, and it’s a hurtful, personal situation, then there are times when I have to process it or talk to someone about it and figure out what @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 17
it’s making me feel, what it’s triggering, why it’s making me upset and working through it. When it’s a complete lie, I’m able to totally ignore it, because it’s not true. “Basically, for me, when a stranger says something hurtful or not nice, I’m pretty good at allowing it to bounce off,” she continues. “That person doesn’t know who I am. The opinions that hurt the most if they’re negative would be my closest friends and family. At the end of the day, you’re never going to be able to control what other people think and say about you, you can only control the way that you interpret it and handle it. For me, I’ve been able to block it out unless it’s someone who truly knows who I am.”

ollywood is typically the place where dreams come true, but Olivia Culpo’s #blessed life actually began back in her native New England, when she was discovered by a local modeling agency during her freshman year at Boston University in 2012. And it was 2012 that officially became the Year of Olivia, when she won her first pageant (literally the first pageant she ever entered)—Miss Rhode Island USA—and successively went on to take home the titles of Miss USA and Miss Universe, which had not been won by an American since 1997 and not been won by a Rhode Island native ever.
“THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS THAT PEOPLE SAY THAT ARE EITHER COMPLETELY FALSE OR THINGS PEOPLE THINK JUST BECAUSE THEY DON’T KNOW YOU... IF THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NO TRUTH TO IT, I DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT, I JUST THINK, ‘THIS PERSON’S INSANE.’” Needless to say, Culpo is a supporter of pageantry—it made her, after all. But she quite carefully measures her response after being asked if she’d recommend it to a younger generation. “I think, as with all things, it depends on the intention,” she says. “If you go into anything with a good, healthy mindset and you’re doing something for the pure reason of growing and becoming a better version of yourself, anything with that attitude is going to help. That’s what I went into the pageant thinking, and I really did grow into a better version of myself. It made me work harder, have focus and dedication and structure, and kept me busy in college when I hated going out and going to parties and drinking.” During her college years, she has no regrets about driving home to her parents’ house in Cranston, R.I., on weekends or studying in her room on a Friday night, either. “It just wasn’t what I wanted to be focused on,” she notes. “I really didn’t like it. My parents never made me feel guilty about going to college and how expensive it was because 18 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
they’re the best, but it made me feel weird, knowing that it was so expensive [and the students around me were wasting their parents’ money by partying]. “I’ve always been so Type A,” she continues. “I’d work so hard just to get the right grades, even if it was information that I’d forget the next day. I needed to get A’s and be on the Dean’s List. I put a lot of pressure on myself to do well in school. The only excuse I ever had for not going out was ‘I’m really busy’ or ‘I’m going to the gym tomorrow’ or ‘I have media training’ or ‘I have interview coaching’ or ‘I’m picking this dress out.’ They were my grand excuses to not have to do anything party-related. At the time, I was very focused; having an excuse was so much better for me. I didn’t want to focus or prioritize anything other than getting the opportunity to do what I’m doing now. I loved learning in college, but the other aspects I didn’t love. I was always itching to get out.” Culpo pauses and laughs, saying, “Now I’m a lot more fun, so don’t get it twisted!” She scratched that itch by moving to Los Angeles (where, in turn, she became much more fun―she’s now a red-carpet and Hollywood party fixture), which may have been the hardest thing she’s done to date. As the middle child of five from a close-knit Italian-American family, breaking out and flying solo was almost impossibly hard. “When I first moved to L.A., I was feeling really upset,” Culpo recalls. “It took such a long time to adjust to the difference in people and lifestyle, but eventually I did settle into it. I felt a little isolated at first because everything is so far away. It’s not like New York City, where I was living before, where you can walk to everything. Now, I can’t just go home and always see my mom and dad and family and childhood friends. That was so hard for me because I’m so close to them.” But then a shift occurred. Her older sister and younger brother joined her on the West Coast. She started to dig the weather―because how can you not? “Having my brother and sister here definitely helps,” she notes. “I started to get adjusted to having to drive everywhere, I appreciated the healthy lifestyle. Everyone I work with lives here too—my agent, my managers—so it’s where I get the most work done, and it definitely helps my career, but there was a growing period. I got over it, but to be honest, it definitely took me two years to really start to enjoy it.” There are still times when Los Angeles can be overwhelming, even when your star is rising like Culpo’s. So she turns to something that reminds her of home: music. Her mother, Susan, is a professional viola player, who met her father, Peter (now a R.I. restaurateur), in college orchestra. Music was very much a part of her home life, and Culpo was talented enough playing the cello that she could have made it her career, as well. She played with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble and the Boston Accompanietta, among others. As an adult, she’s played live with Maxwell, recorded a track with Snoop Dogg and still performs with her mother whenever she can— most recently at a Mother’s Day charity function for the nonprofit Best Buddies. She’s also enthusiastic about singing, so watch this space... For now, though, she’ll use music as a tool to keep her grounded. “Music is definitely a passion of mine, but right now it’s just a creative outlet for me personally in a way that allows me to unwind,” she says. “It’s so relaxing. [When I play my cello], it takes me out of the world; it’s the only thing that really takes me out of life.” Culpo certainly isn’t a loner by any stretch of the imagination, but she’s definitely someone who savors her alone time. She likes to do things that make her feel good, clean and beautiful, like playing her instrument or staying fit—she keeps active by staying active, changing up her routine to include Pilates, SoulCycle, Barry’s Bootcamp and Orange Theory—seeing friends, zoning out with yoga or journaling. “I feel good when I know that I’m taking care of myself mentally,

HER PERSONAL STYLE
emotionally, physically, spiritually―that’s when I feel the absolute most confident,” she reveals, noting, “I feel like spending time with yourself, doing something nice for yourself, [it] makes you feel beautiful. It can seem like it’s selfish, but I think that you’re only able to be good to other people if you’re taking care of yourself, and sometimes people overlook their own needs. Whatever you can do to know you’re taking care of yourself is something you can do to make you feel beautiful. It definitely works for me.” And while making yourself feel good is the most important thing, sometimes you need a someone to make you feel beautiful. Culpo’s relationships have been tabloid fodder since she arrived in Los Angeles, thanks to her famous partners, including Jonas, NFL-turned-MLB player Tim Tebow and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Danny Amendola, whom she broke up with in March but started seeing again in June. When asked the all-important relationship-status question, Culpo hems and haws. “I feel like—um—well, yeah,” she stammers, before stating more firmly, “I’m in a relationship with myself, that’s what I always say. I’m in a relationship with myself first.” But, to clarify, she notes, “I am [dating someone], but right now work is definitely important, and my most important relationship is the one that I’m working on with myself. I’m dating, but it’s not something I want to get into too much detail on.” This applies to kids, as well. Respect to her: Culpo is all about her career right now. “I definitely feel way too young to be thinking about that now,” she asserts. “I’m only 26. I honestly don’t know [if I’ll have kids] because it’s not even on my radar.” Right now, she’s just trying to balance her ever-increasing career demands, spending time with family, friends and that certain someone, as well as finding that perfect perfectionist’s balance. It isn’t easy, but balance, for Culpo, is necessary to maintain her happiness… and her sanity. “For now, I’m definitely just riding it out,” she says. “I’m the person who takes every opportunity and tries to turn it into something, but I don’t have such a long-term plan. I feel like that’s the sort of expectation that you’re most likely going to get let down. I’m going to take advantage of the opportunities, be grateful for what is happening and try to turn this into the most that I can.”
“I would say my style is classic with a take on current trends. For me, simplicity works really well, but I also like to go more street style and edgy. I don’t wear too many girly things, but I like to switch it up. Sometimes I’ll wear ruffles;sometimes it’s leather and black and metal;other times it’s sneakers and a dress. What’s most important is that I keep [my look] classic and attainable. I like when I feel like someone else can copy the exact thing I’m wearing and look great in it.” WHAT SHE’S LEARNED FROM FILMING MODEL SQUAD
“You have to look at your body and decide what you want to showcase, what you want to show and accentuate. You can make an outfit look completely different by adding a belt or having it tailored. Everybody’s body is different.” HER BEST JEWELRY MEMORY
“I remember every year begging my mom to get me the Tiffany & Co. heart bracelet. Every year Christmas would pass, and I would wait for the bracelet, and it would never come. When it finally did, I was so excited. I see girls wearing it again. It’s such a classic piece of jewelry. I’m so obsessed with Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It was always my dream to get that little teal box. It definitely reminds me of growing up and being young. I still have it here with me in L.A.” AND ARE DIAMONDS REALLY A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND?
“I’m definitely a diamond girl. I can’t resist a sparkle.” ON HOW SHE WOULD DESCRIBE HERSELF
“Intentional, hard-working, family-oriented and fun. It’s so awkward to answer because it feels like I’m complimenting myself or spending way too much time thinking about myself!” ON TURNING A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE
“Growing up, I was always made fun of for my eyebrows, which was very annoying. But then, big eyebrows became a trend, so that worked out. But there was a time that I felt very self-conscious about them, and then I ended up actually liking and being able to make them my own unique characteristic.” @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 21

EVER-SO-POPULAR SUMMERTIME
vacation destination Mykonos has welcomed a new luxury design house to its Nammos Village: Christian Dior. The French fashion company has opened a temporary Dior Mykonos pop-up shop on June 15th, just in time as tourists and visitors from across the globe flock to the Greek island for holiday. The white-colored storefront is an ode to the architecture of the Cycladic Islands of Greece, while the geometric lines complement the natural landscape and blue backdrop of the Azure Sea. Several of the pieces are exclusive to the pop-up and designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, such as the “J’ADIOR MYKONOS”-inscribed striped bodysuits and cashmere sweaters. Additionally, five new mitzah scarves made of silk and twill are featured, as are four cotton stoles with the same, exclusive signature. The seasonal Dior Book Tote also includes embroidery that reads “MYKONOS” while other pieces, such as bracelets, sandals and ballerina pumps tout the words, “CHRISTIAN DIOR MYKONOS.” Other exclusive pieces will be advancereleased at the boutique, which will close midOctober, including four Dior Oblique Zipped Pouches, two DiorClub1 visors, two baseball caps and berets, and a Dior Addict bag with five, interchangeable straps for purchase.

to a local fish ‘n’ chip shop—or “chippy” to english locals—in north London. The quirky, offbeat shoot featured one of the U.K.’s most talented and famous exports, Harry Styles, the now-solo singer/ musician, formerly one-fifth of the British pop boy band sensation, “One Direction.” Styles—who has become a style icon himself—is the young English hero of the images, wearing tailored Gucci suits with waistcoats—one is made from wool mohair with white, red and black mini pied de poule with a green checkered blanket, and the other is an ink-gray bee checked suit. He also wears a macro gingham sharkskin dressing gown as a coat, as well as a dark wool mohair jacket with an embroidered collar, and a Major League Baseball New York Yankees-patched, white-oatmeal, bird’s eye wool suit—a real head-turner. The contemporary styling perfectly combines more formal cuts with casual and youthful touches—a combination that Gucci has mastered. The other heroes in the shoot are the pet chicken and dog, prominently featured in the “chippy” with Styles. Reflecting a common theme and setting in British film, the narrative of the images portrays a young Englishman ordering his food from the fish and chip shop counter and sharing with his animals. The campaign video, below, is so charmingly British, playing the song “Michelle,” written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, of British Beatles royalty.

Karl Lagerfeld reinvents the iconic CHANEL hats, first made popular by Gabrielle Chanel in the 1930s.

HATS HAVE BEEN AN INTEGRAL ACCESSORY
to CHANEL since the dawn of the brand’s existence, first created by young Gabrielle Chanel, who opened her first hat shop at 21 Rue Cambon. Drawing on its heritage, Karl Lagerfeld continues to reinvent the CHANEL staple in his collections, this time, via the Beret, the Boater and Headpieces with Veils.
traveling, of this desire for escape, for dreams and for adventure: The beret punctuates the silhouette with a sophisticated nonchalance so dear to the House,” per the brand. The style is available in more than 15 different tweeds of varied colors, some with embroidered sequins and there with CHANEL-stamped oversized brooches.
straw boater fitted her head, and whose head fitted her shoulders.” Using different materials each season, Lagerfeld’s version for the 2018/2019 Cruise collection is inspired by the sea, with a subtly plunging brim—or to be worn straight on—and made from wheat straw.
THE BERET
THE BOATER
A super-chic addition to any outfit, Gabrielle updated the veil and brought it back in the 1930s, embellished with ribbons, flowers, feathers and even birds. A daring but sophisticated accessory, Lagerfeld uses the playful style in his collections, with varied tulles, embroidery, jewelry, brooches, feathers and flowers. For the Spring-Summer 2018 Haute Couture collection, his veils were varied, with different proportions, topped with flowers, transparencies, embroideries, chiffon flowers, silk, tweed, beads and spring flowers made by the House of Lemarié.
Inspired by menswear, the Beret was one of the most classic pieces of Gabrielle’s wardrobe. The addition of a brooch made the style more feminine, and to her, represented a certain freedom, continuing to reinterpret the style from the 1930s onward. Lagerfeld takes this legacy and has included the style in several CHANEL collections, worn by talents such as Claudia Schiffer and Karen Elson in 1993 and 1998 for advertisements. In the 2018/2019 Cruise collection, Lagerfeld has adapted the style as a “symbol of the spirit of
Another style adapted from menswear, Gabrielle used a straw boater hat to put an exclamation point on what was a seemingly simple outfit. In his book The Allure of Chanel, Paul Morand recalls Gabrielle’s words: “The women I saw at the races wore enormous loaves in their heads, constructions made of feathers and improved with fruit and plumes. (…) In the grandstands, people began talking about my amazing, unusual hats, so neat and austere. (…) I was the curious creature, the little woman whose

+CELEBRATING THIS SEPTEMBER MARKS A MILESTONE FOR
Casadei, as the Italian luxury footwear brand celebrates its 60th anniversary. Casadei was founded in 1958, in a small workshop in San Mauro Pascoli, Italy, where Quinto and Flora Casadei created the first collection of sandals designed for tourists holidaying on the Italian Riviera. The brand has since evolved into a full luxury footwear label that is a red-carpet staple and retails at some of the finest stores around the world. We sat down with Cesare Casadei, Quinto and Flora’s son, and the brand’s current creative director, to discuss the label’s evolution and how it plans on celebrating 60 years. How has Casadei evolved since its inception in 1958? Since the beginning of our journey, our mission has been to be at the service of women, to make them happy and excited in their Casadei shoes. For this reason I would say that since its inception, Casadei has been in constant development, looking at how women have changed, how society has organically changed. Looking back, just to mention, to the revolutionary ’70s, the overdecorated ’80s, the minimal ’90s… every decade has a deep story to tell, and we have witnessed it. Thanks to this huge heritage, we have had the chance to look back to look forward with a natural instinct for innovation and creativity. What has changed throughout its history? What remains the same? Values remain, and will always remain the same. Dedication, curiosity, open-mindedness, style, innovation and comfort. Time has changed, and society has changed. This is the reason why you must keep your eyes and your

mind wide open. We are children of the times, and we must follow the changes. What is the brand doing to celebrate this milestone anniversary? Have any special pieces been created? We have been discussing the meaning of celebrations with my family―as we always do for important matters. We all agreed that we had so many occasions for big events in the brand’s past, that today we really feel the importance of opening our doors to unveil the behind-the-scenes of luxury shoe making. Of course, as I am a creative mind; I cannot stop thinking of the new styles, therefore I designed a celebratory-capsule collection that embodies the conjunction of the past and future. A modern design inspired by the Andy Warhol Factory. Featuring the new Kitten Plexi Blade heel on a vintage silhouette, a slingback. It perfectly represents Casadei’s constant search for original, unexpected and revolutionary solutions, and our global vision. Is Casadei still the perfect brand to wear on the Italian Riviera? Where else is it a fit? Casadei can be worn everywhere and at every time of the day―or the night. We have such a wide range of styles from flats to stilettoes, sneakers and boots. Every woman can find her
favorite style in our stores. We are global! Which celebrities have worn Casadei through its most iconic moments? We are so lucky to have so many friends of the brand. Amazing women from all over the world have chosen Casadei in the past and keep on choosing the brand today. I feel very proud and blessed to see that we keep on appearing on beautiful feet globally and feel so happy to see how the celebrities interpret different styles in a personal way. What is your personal goal for the brand’s future and future evolution? To keep on doing what I love with my family; Casadei is the story of a family and the passion of their work. Is there a certain specific logic behind keeping the brand’s production in San Mauro Pascoli? Is it to lend Casadei authenticity, or something else? There would be no Casadei without San Mauro Pascoli, the district of women’s luxury shoes. Here is where the “know how” is based, and as we aim for excellence; there is no reason to move. As I like to mention, we are “Made in San Mauro Pascoli, not just made in Italy,” and we are proud of our roots. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 27

JUST BECAUSE YOU BECAME A PARENT
doesn’t mean you have to swap your Saint Laurent for sweatsuits, or your Louis V’s for 24/7 loungewear. And now, thanks to CYBEX, that rings true for your baby gear as well. Meet the CYBEX by Jeremy Scott Priam, part of the brand’s Platinum Style collection of products. The Priam stroller gives you all the functionality you need while matching with the most highend designers in your closet. But before getting into the fashionable side of things, let’s talk the two most important facets of buying any piece of equipment or gear for baby: safety and functionality. The Priam frame allows the user to build the perfect travel system for his or her baby using any Priam seat and carry cot attachment. It also can be used in two-wheel mode, making it completely functional in harsh surfaces like sand and snow, as well as going up and down stairs. The padded seat is plush and comfortable for baby and can be switched between forward and rear-facing positions, depending on what mom and dad prefer. The seat can also recline almost all the way back to a flat position, in both forward and rear-facing mode. For baby’s wellbeing, there is an XXL sun canopy with a peeka-boo window, touting a UPF 50+ rating for optimal sun protection, while a five-point safety harness is padded for extra comfort, without sacrificing any bit of security. And a high-quality faux leather bumper bar and adjustable foot rest make for baby’s luxurious R’n’R. Now let’s talk style. American fashion designer Jeremy Scott—the creative director of world-renowned fashion brand Moschino—is one of the most highly respected designers in the world. With a laundry list of A-list clientele
he has dressed in the past, including Rihanna, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus, he also launched a successful collection with one of the biggest sportswear labels in the world, adidas. For his collection with CYBEX, Scott brings his eye-catching and extravagant designs to every piece in this collaboration, one being this highly coveted Priam, which he recently gifted to friend and one of the most recognizable faces in the music world today, Cardi B, in pink coloring. The style is particularly luxe, especially with the addition of the gold details, including the subtle branding, wheel rims and emblazoned wings. The CYBEX by Jeremy Scott Priam has quickly become a celebrity favorite, pictured with Nicky Hilton, Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley, to name a few; it even made a cameo appearance in superstar singer Fergie‘s music video called “M.I.L.F. $,” which also featured some of the most famous moms in the world: Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Ciara and Alessandra Ambrosio. THE SNOO SMART SLEEPER IS THE SAFEST,
most effective bassinet that quickly soothes infant crying and boosts sleep with the same rhythmic sensations babies enjoy in the womb. Developed by Dr. Harvey Karp, a nationally renowned pediatrician and child development specialist, the SNOO is based on his 5 S’s (Swaddle, Side or Stomach Position, Shush, Swing, Suck), soothing tips that have helped millions of parents around the world. Since launching in 2016, SNOO has won over 14 major awards, including Innovation of the Year from the National Sleep Foundation and is the bed to meet all American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep recommendations. Its smart technology responds to your baby’s crying by choosing the level of increased shushing and rocking most likely to calm the baby’s upset. The SNOO naturally sleep trains 48 HAUTE LIVING totliving.com
and helps newborns to babies up to six months to improve their sleep while the SNOO sack prevents risky rolling and is hip safe, which reduces overheating. The SNOO is the only bed that boosts your baby’s sleep from one-to-two hours thanks to the gentle rocking and constant rumbly sound they got so accustomed to in the womb. This rhythmic motion automatically reduces night waking and even helps your baby learn to self-soothe, so no more need for babies to cry it out. One other function that allows this to happen is by the bassinet ‘hearing’ your baby’s cries and automatically responds with five levels of white noise and motion to help soothe the fussing. The SNOO Smart Sleeper is one of several products under the Happiest Baby Inc. umbrella, a mission-driven, venture backed company started by Dr. Karp and wife and business partner, Nina Montée-Karp, dedicated to helping parents succeed at raising healthy, happy children.

Why Luxury
Abu Dhabi Real Estate Is ALTHOUGH LU XU RY R EA L ES TAT E I N T HE U NIT E D A R A B
emirates underwent a stormy few years after the financial crash of 2008 and the oil price plunge of 2014, the future is looking good. Though appreciation could best be described as stable, expats are flocking to the area, particularly the capital Abu Dhabi, and new construction is booming. The city, which sits on an archipelago in the Persian Gulf, off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula, is made up of 80 percent expats for a reason—low taxes, or rather no taxes. Foreigners, reflected in the city’s cultural diversity, pay no income, capital gains or inheritance tax. For Brits, there’s an added bonus: A tax treaty signed between the UAE and the United Kingdom in 2016 means that U.K. pension holders over the age of 55 living in the Emirates can withdraw their entire pension tax-free providing they have been living in the UAE for at least five full tax years. This has caused a boom in wealthy foreigners looking to call the place home and keep their tax dollars/pounds in their bank accounts. Property broker JLL estimates that as many as 34,000 homes could be completed in 2018 with another 28,000 due in 2019. Much of the exuberance is due to Expo 2020, a global destination for new ideas and innovation (business, transport and sustainability). A World Expo happens once every five years and lasts for six months. An expected $8 billion is being spent on Expo-related projects driving an infrastructure boom, with $2-4 billion invested in developing the Expo site. The event is expected to attract up to 300,000 visitors a day when it opens. Standard Chartered, the international bank, has predicted it will also create around 300,000 new jobs and attract new residents in the Emirate city, which currently has a population of three million. Whether the Expo has a long-term effect on real estate values and investment, however, remains to be seen. If the last few Olympics are anything to go by, its effects at the residential end tend to be short-lived. Of greater appeal to wealthy expats looking to call the UAE a 50 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com
second or even first home is the climate. It’s built on a desert, so it never rains, which is good and bad. Bad for natural vegetation and water supply, good for getting a tan. To quote the Financial Times, “at just 75mm, the average annual rainfall in the desert would barely fill a coffee mug.” Winters are warm, but summers are blistering―meaning long months inside air-conditioned buildings is a must. Luxury-condo residences tend to be within larger business and retail centers such as the popular condos offered at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi (still under construction) within the Al Maryah Island development. Online searching showed a number of new single-family homes priced with the $5 million to $20 million range. However, more popular are the non-luxury, lower-priced properties such as those at the Al Reef development, where a four-bedroom villa can cost around $500,000 to $600,000. With prices in the UAE recently edging up and the area making great strides to establish cultural attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the largest art museum on the Arabian Peninsula and a sister to the Parisian landmark, which recently opened its doors, real estate professionals are feeling confident about the city’s lure to investors. Golf enthusiasts have their choice of three pristine championship courses carved out of the peninsula’s sand dunes: Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Yas Links Abu Dhabi. Soccer is also extremely popular in Abu Dhabi with a number of professional teams playing in newly built stadiums and top European clubs starting soccer schools in the area for young players. Buoying this is a new UAE-backed program offering potential buyers the opportunity to extend their visa by 10 years with a property purchase, which could have a huge impact driving sales and rental prices upward. THEY SAY YOU CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER… BUT WE ALL DO. FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER, AND
Residential developers understand that. Particularly as the current market weakens with oversupply, buyers need to be hooked from the minute they walk in the door. A building’s lobby is the equivalent of a book cover. Developers can hook a buyer with class and elegance from the moment that buyer steps in the door. While developers used to build grand, sparse lobbies with the belief was that size mattered, the new trend in New York City is more intimate and quaint entryways that boast extremely costly and elegant finishes. The motto now is that good things come in small(er) packages.
207W79
Buyers looking for prestige appreciate the feeling of lobbies that replicate a grand townhouse. Feeling like a private home can really appeal over mammoth lobbies. One developer who is betting big on first impressions is Anbau, a Manhattanbased, full-service firm that worked with architect Morris Adjmi for its boutique condo 207W79 in a landmarked district of the Upper West Side. Entering the 16-story building, prospectors and buyers are greeted by a unique Bianco Carrara foliage mosaic and a border of Bianco Carrara marble. Walls have teak paneling with white bronze accents, creating an intimate, opulent entrance.
250 WEST 81ST
At 250 West 81st, owners enter through an oval gallery designed by world-renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects, which are the leaders in old-school elegance. It is complete with a 14-foot-high dome ceiling, a beautiful custom fireplace with an imported marble surround and oeil-de-boeuf-inspired flooring of marble with custom bronze- accented wood. There is also a marble reception desk for the 24-hour lobby attendant and a concierge.

Enter the chic lobby of this Cabinet Alberto Pinto-designed space and you may think you’re walking through a private home in Paris. The look at 27 East 79th Street features custom ironwork, imported blonde limestone tiles and patinated bronze fixtures that create a warm glow against the backdrop of Noir Saint Laurent marble.
277 FIFTH AVENUE
At 277 Fifth Avenue, a contemporary NoMad tower by Rafael Viñoly, residents will enter the bespoke, modern lobby designed by Jeffrey Beers International with silver travertine floors with Absolute Black Granite accents and Bianco Dolomiti white marble borders; walls are lined with slabs of Absolute Black Granite in contrasting polished and flamed finishes complemented by dark-stained White Oak panels. Behind the concierge desk is a freestanding wall lined with leather panels with metal accent trims, and featuring a sculptural art piece. In addition, this intimate space is a curated library with a dramatic double-height bookcase wall. 52 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com

THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN DRINKING WORLD-CLASS WINES
is living on those sumptuous wine estates that produce such wines. Estates that are situated in the most ideal locations that boast the most ideal weather: sunny by day and cool by night. They also offer the most aromatic of scents: the briny ocean and smoky mountains intermingling with nearby sun-warmed lavender; the crispiness of apples colliding with the muskiness of garden-fresh melons. All these fragrances culminate into the blossoming of the most luscious, delectable grapes. Smell those subtle aromas of a blooming grape cluster, and you’ll smell the sweetest of ephemeral aromas, not cloying or overly saturated in any way. Such scents exude as you drink your bottle of Chianti or Malbec on an expansive stone terrace, watching the gentle sway of grape-bearing vines in the most magnificent of grooves sprawled out as far as your eyes can see. This is, indeed, the good life as toasted by oenophiles around the world. For those who are fortunate enough to own a piece of wine country, their dream lies in the sipping of vino, eyeing the vineyard vistas and feeling the verve on a daily basis while situated in one of the world’s most revered wine regions.
BORDEAUX, FRANCE
Bordeaux, France, is the world’s largest wine region that is bien adapté for unparalleled wine to flourish. It is the perfect location to experience idyllic French persuasions for those seeking wineproducing châteaux, vineyards, wineries and overarching plane trees along rural roadways. Bordeaux is the perfect location for a château to sit in an elevated position overlooking its surrounding vineyard. A vast living room with an original period stone fireplace, a chevron oak parquet floor, high ceilings and French windows can only add to the charm of any ideal French property that produces the finest of world-renowned wines. To live in such a château is to experience Bordeaux at its best, boldest and most beautiful, year-round.

In Tuscan wine regions, it’s not uncommon to see the most impressive of cypresses gracefully leading up to an estate’s grand entrance, surrounded by those quintessential grounds with magnificent marble fountains and sculptures. Such grounds are encapsulated by fragrant formal gardens, as well as olive groves, vineyards and, at times, a private forest. Tuscany is regarded as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and the reasons as to why are so clearly evident. Tuscan locales have remained largely unchanged for centuries: Notable wine estates, vineyards, farmhouses and stone houses remain full of character and original features, while reflecting the legendary landscapes and antiquity of this district. It is no wonder that Tuscany is referred to as “a nation within a nation.” Tuscany is, indeed, the magic behind that stupendous bottle of wine, that sumptuous grape.
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
It’s so easy to get into that Napa state of mind: warm weather, stunning views, sophisticated viticulture and refined culinary arts. The luscious green hills and valleys lure many to live their life of luxury there, one of the most spectacular wine regions in the world. A perennially popular warm season makes for the most incredible recreational paradise year-round. It’s effortless to live in a Napa home with a series of private pavilions, terraces and courtyards that are embraced by unparalleled, panoramic views of rolling grasslands and undulating vineyards. Add in some canopied trees with the most incredulous mountain vistas, and you’re definitely in California wine country—and here to stay. It simply does not get any better. Unless, of course, you also have a glass of fine wine in your hand.
MANY HOLLYWOOD STARS AND MUSIC-INDUSTRY LEADERS ARE
turning art collecting into an inspiring hobby and profitable investment. Famous faces are making regular appearances at Art Basel,
museum benefits and auctions. While personal tastes vary, these
art-collecting celebs have walls in their homes that would rival any gallery show.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO’S ART COLLECTION
Call DiCaprio “The Wolf of Wall Art.” This guy is a fixture on the
art-auction circuit. He may try to keep a low profile with a cap pulled low over his eyes, but it’s hard for him to hide once the bidding starts. One of DiCaprio’s first big art purchases was a Jean-Michel
Basquiat drawing. He told The Wall Street Journal, “I’ve continued to be a huge admirer of Basquiat.”
He has also purchased work by Andy Warhol, Picasso, Takashi
Murakami, Oscar Murillo, Walton Ford, Ed Ruscha and Mark Ryden. DiCaprio has even found ways to combine his philanthropic
work with art appreciation. In 2013, he held “The 11th Hour Sale” a
Christie’s charity auction to benefit some of his environmental causes. During the event, DiCaprio purchased a painting by his friend “Dustheads” by Jean Michel Basquiat;Brad Pitt; Jay-Z; Leonardo DiCaprio
Walton Ford for $250,000. At Sean Penn’s Haiti Rising Gala charity
auction in Beverly Hills, DiCaprio purchased a work by Ed Ruscha for $125,000.
Last year, DiCaprio made headlines for having to surrender a $3.2
million Picasso and a $9 million Basquiat to the U.S. government.
The works were connected to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad embezzlement scandal. Because the art in question were gifts,
DiCaprio was not charged with any crimes or implicated in any
wrongdoing. A statement from the actor about the pieces read, “Mr. DiCaprio is grateful for the support of the government in this effort and continues to hope that justice is done in this matter.”

the fore of the car industry, captivating the imagination of manufacturers and devotees worldwide. The latest ripple in the segment comes from legacy carmaker Jaguar, which recently debuted its I-PACE model. Having zipped on the country roads of Europe for a month now, I-PACE conquers some 240 miles per a charge of its lithium-ion battery cells, fueling two electric motors. The battery rests within the wheelbase, providing a low center of gravity that enhances the vehicle’s dynamics and longevity. Reaching 60 mph in a mere 4.5 seconds thanks to its builtin All Wheel Drive traction, I-PACE generates nearly 400 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque. Breaking comes with an extreme ease and regeneration capabilities. The breaking system not only slows down the car but transforms that energy into power to prolong the battery’s range. I-PACE accomplishes these commendable feats with 10 hours of charging from a conventional outlet, a time that dwindles to around an hour with a dedicated electric charge point. Inside, the car is as striking as it is from the outside. Clean, straight lines dominate the interior, which holds sports seats available in a raft of materials and hues. The motor encapsulation of the cabin, wired with control screens, reduces outside noises―a feature that augments the already quiet drive. An all-electric vehicle with a sleek silhouette, the model is an intricate blend between an SUV and a sports car. It can sit five and has 51 cubic feet of storage space. The luxury electric car flaunts a modest price compared to its upscale origin and competitors such as Tesla Model X. The basic I-PACE edition goes for just under $70,000. Electric cars might still not be widely accessible to the masses, a fact Elon Musk has vowed to upend. Yet, Jaguar, a legacy high-end brand, appears to have claimed the lead on this one with its budget-friendly, comfortable and reliable I-PACE.

Huracán Performante : Even the name sounds fast BY TIM LAPPEN

L A M B O R G H I N I L O V E S TO N A M E I T S C A R S A F T E R FA M O U S B U L L S , A N D
the Huracán is no different. Spanish for “hurricane,” it’s the name of a famous Spanish fighting bull. Perhaps that bull handled well and had terrific acceleration, too, since its automotive namesake sure does. And then Lamborghini upped the ante with the Performante, the sriracha of Huracáns. The Performante differs from its “normal” AWD Huracán sibling in a few ways: • Weight–Dropped almost 90 pounds, to about 3,050 pounds (that’s light!) • Horsepower–Added almost 30, now up to 631 • Torque–Included 30 more, to 443 foot-pounds • 0-60–2.9 seconds (3/10 of a second faster than its sibling) Perhaps the most obvious difference is that the Performante has a huge rear wing sitting up on two strong struts. But the less-obvious benefit of that wing is what Lamborghini calls “ALA,” which stands for “Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva,” or “Active Aero.” It allows the air inhaled at the front to be channeled in ways that can produce downforce on the rear tires, which helps provide traction at higher speeds, when cars tend to rise up due to the air running underneath. But wait, there’s more! The system has the ability to address each of the two struts separately so it can apply downforce to the inside tire on a corner (the one that lifts due to cornering forces) and thereby allow the car to corner faster on the track. How much faster? The Huracán Performante set the record for a production car on the fabled Nürburgring Nordschleife track, beating the time set by the Porsche 918 (the hybrid monster car that sold for a base price of $845,000 and was motivated by 882 ponies) by five seconds, a huge amount of time in racing. When considering the price differential over the $275,000 base of the Performante, and the approximately 250 horsepower less than the Porsche, the Active Aero proved its worth, and then some. I have loved every Lamborghini I have ever driven, on the track and on the street, in the mountains and highways from Deer Valley to Jackson Hole, on the track at Homestead (Florida) and Thermal (California) and in various California stoplight Grands Prix. Their distinctive, aggressive looks announce their street cred and their snarl is not electronically enhanced–when Sant’Agata Bolognese creates an offering, its looks and sounds write checks that the car is ready, willing and able to cash–even without two forms of ID. Sure, the car is low (under 45 inches from street to roof) and entries and exits require a certain level of flexibility and core strength (or in some people, who shall remain nameless, a certain level of pride that summons forth flexibility and core strength that theretofore never existed). But to become so well-ensconced in the driver’s seat, where it’s almost like a bespoke suit that is made for its owner, it’s to encourage the driver to become one with the machine. And for that experience, it’s worth all of the gyrations necessary to make that happen.

At 157m (512 ft), Dilbar is the world’s fourth-longest yacht and the world’s biggest, by volume. Built by Lürrsen, Dilbar is owned by Russian-Uzbek mining and investment giant Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov, accommodates 40 people, a crew of 100 and a bespoke Airbus H175 helicopter for seven passengers. The helicopter also features a forward zone, complete with a lounge vibe and club seating for four and a galley with sofa seating for three in the rear. Dilbar has a displacement tonnage of 1,230 tons—equivalent to around 186 elephants, a beam width of 23m and a 25m swimming pool able to hold 225,000 liters of water. The superyacht also has 3,800m of living space for the owner and guests. While it may not be the world’s most expensive boat at almost $300 million, it certainly is one for the books.
Initially a joint venture between Blohm + Voss and Lürssen shipyards, the Andrew Winchdesigned Platinum 525 was commissioned in 1996 for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. In 2001, Platinum Yachts acquired the hull for H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Mohammed took over the project in 2006, and he renamed the Platinum 525 to what we now know as the Dubai. Among the Dubai’s most intriguing features are the split-level owner’s deck, a helipad that accommodates a 9.5-ton helicopter, multiple Jacuzzis and sunbathing areas, magnificent, delicately wrought mosaics and an astonishing circular staircase with glass steps. At 162m (531 ft, 6 in), the Dubai easily cruises at 26 knots (30 mph; 48km/h) with a crew of 88 and a crew area large enough to accommodate 115 people. While the Dubai also has the distinction of being previously named the world’s largest yacht, it’s also one of the world’s most memorable. At $400 million, it’s also among the most expensive.

Azzam in Arabic means “determination; resolute.” Perhaps that is why Lürssen Yachts built superyacht Azzam for H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, emir of Abu Dhabi and supreme commander of the UAE’s Union Defense Forces. Priced north of $600 million, the Azzam is currently the world’s largest motor yacht (and fourth most expensive). The Azzam is outfitted with its very own submarine, missiledefense system and a bulletproof master suite. “She truly represents another milestone in yachting history,” Peter Lürssen said. It features two gas turbines and two diesel engines, with a combined 94,000 horsepower, drive the 180m (591 ft), six-deck behemoth at a maximum speed of 30 knots. With two swimming pools, two helipads and a cinema, the Azzam outmatches Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s superyacht, M/Y Eclipse, by 15m (49.2 ft), boasting a 20.8m (68 ft, 4 in) beam. Without question, the Azzam takes the phrase “members only” to an entirely new level.

Tourbillon From a precision device to a collector’s favorite complication, these are the ins and outs of the famed tourbillon.
THE TOURBILLON IS ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY regarded complications that can be bought, mostly due to the combination of its perceived technical difficulty together with its aesthetic beauty. The contribution of a tourbillon to the precision of a wristwatch is always a heavily debated topic. It was originally developed for pocket watches, which remain the vast majority of their time in one or two positions. When our timekeepers migrated from our pockets to our wrists, the movements of our arms brought the balance wheel in so many different positions that this almost acts as a natural “tourbillon.” But then again, we don’t wear a mechanical wristwatch because it is so precise―we wear it because they are objects of great beauty and technical perseverance. After the invention of the tourbillon by AbrahamLouis Breguet in 1801, it remained a rare and exclusive complication. In fact, only a relatively small group of watchmakers took an interest in them, serving a group of watch collectors and connoisseurs who were “in the know” about this remarkable complication. This changed when, after the quartz crisis, there was a renewed interest of the general public into mechanical watches. They went from functional timekeepers to objects of art that just happen to tell time. At this stage, the tourbillon emerged as one of the most eminent players. At first, these watches featured the traditional tourbillon over a single axis, as designed by Breguet, but as the interest in the complication remained strong, there was room in the market for more exclusive, hence complicated, tourbillons.

BY MARTIN GREEN
To make a tourbillon more complicated, quite a few things can be done, but the most popular ones have been to either let them rotate over more than one axis, or to use multiple tourbillons in a single movement. The double-axis tourbillon was invented in 1977 by Anthony Randall. As the name already indicates, this tourbillon doesn’t rotate over just a single axis, but two, and this was the first of its kind. This first double-axis tourbillon was actually used in a clock and wouldn’t be used in a wristwatch until the early 2000s. Later on, a triple-axis tourbillon would also be introduced into wristwatches. The appeal of a multi-axis tourbillon lies in the fact that it is much more of a three-dimensional object that is in constant motion. It not only offered new challenges for watchmakers but also for designers on how to best incorporate the complications’ unique qualities so that it can be admired in its full glory by the owners who wear the watch. This has resulted over the years in many unique designs, such as the Hublot MP-09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis. Integrating multiple tourbillons into a single movement is another way to make a tourbillon watch more complicated. What it generally does is that the watch takes the sum, through a differential, of both tourbillons which average out positional errors. The focus is increased precision once again, but the visual impact of these watches is for many the true reason to purchase one of these watches.

SOME WATCHES ARE BIG FOR THE SAKE OF BEING big. Other than a large diameter, they have very little to offer. There is, however, a category of watches that not only uses all the real estate they have available, but they also need it. Each features movements that fill the case and require large dials to show a multitude of complications in a fashionable order. They are the behemoths of the Haute Horlogerie, and they are large for a good reason.
WATCHES
LIST
VACHERON CONSTANTIN LES CABINOTIERS CELESTIA ASTRONOMICAL GRAND COMPLICATION 3600 It is actually quite an accomplishment that Vacheron Constantin only needs a 45mm case to house the 23(!) different complications that make up the Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600. The most complicated wristwatch that the brand has ever made features a wide variety of mainly astronomical complications and displays them both at the front and the back of the watch. It really uses the space of this large watch well, not only to deliver all the information that this big watch has to offer in a comprehensive and easy-to-read way, but it also manages to give it a power reserve of no less than three weeks.
GREUBEL FORSEY GMT Greubel Forsey likes to keep its watches complicated and the names easy. The term “GMT” doesn’t even come close to describe what this watch has to offer. A second time zone features an eye-catching rotating globe with universal time and day-and-night, and it also tells the summer and winter times of the different time zones and which cities observe them. To ensure precise timekeeping, Greubel Forsey also features a 25° inclined tourbillon that makes a full rotation in 24 seconds. With a diameter of 43.5mm, this is not even the largest, most complicated watch on the market, but also doesn’t really quite fit in this diameter, as the case bulges out to accommodate the three-dimensional earth and tourbillon. JAQUET DROZ CHARMING BIRD With a diameter of 47mm, this Jaquet Droz is big. However, it needs to be as it not only tells the time but also has to provide enough room for the bird inside the watch to live. Famous for its automatons, Jaquet Droz’s watch offers a bird that whistles, twists and flaps its wings, all under a sapphire dome on the watch dial. Doing all that mechanically is an incredible feat, and 47mm seems quite small to accomplish all this. The watch is offered in a few varieties, but the beauty of this one is that the mechanics that make the unique features of the watch possible can be seen, which adds to its magic. A. LANGE & SÖHNE TRIPLE SPLIT A. Lange & Söhne is a very practical brand. It usually only goes big with its cases when it needs the space to create something unique. In the case of the Triple Split, the watch offers a rattrapante function on not only the seconds but also the hours and the minutes. Given that accomplishment, it is impressive that it has kept the size of this highly complicated manual wind watch at 43.2mm. The Triple Split goes further from the 2004 Double Split by A. Lange & Söhne―it has increased the range in which two events can be timed to 12 hours. It’s a unique feature in the world of Haute Horlogerie and spaced well within the large case of this watch. @hautetime HAUTE LIVING 81

+The Need
for Speed Roger Dubuis teams up with Pirelli and Lamborghini on the Excalibur Aventador S. BY MARTIN GREEN
HOW CAN THE SPEED AND AGILITY OF A SUPER sports car be translated into a watch? At Roger Dubuis, it has no problem capturing the essence of it all, which is fortunate as it has teamed up with two of the most iconic names in the car industry: Pirelli and Lamborghini. A watch that best explains how it achieves this is inspired by the latter and named the Excalibur Aventador S. To create this watch, Roger Dubuis did forgo the usual complications and opted for two balances, placed at a 90° angle and linked with a differential. This forms the input for the dead-beat seconds hand, and of course the hour and minute hand. The result is a watch that not only looks exotic, but in which its exotic looks actually serve a purpose and contribute to a more precise way of keeping time. In that way, this Roger Dubuis is rather similar to the car that gave its name, the Lamborghini Aventador S. Yet this is not the only similarity between the two mechanical marvels.

LIST
Just like Lamborghini, Roger Dubuis has also embraced new materials to make its watch lighter yet stronger. Just as the chassis of the Aventador S is made from CSMC carbon, so is its case. Weight is even further reduced by skeletonizing the case where possible, which makes it wears surprisingly light despite its generous diameter of 45mm. Color can do a lot for a car, but also for a watch. Technically, both Excalibur Aventador S watches are identical, yet they look quite different. The green version is a boutique exclusive, limited to only eight pieces and uses a monochrome theme to really set off the bright green color of the many details inside and outside the watch. The other Excalibur Aventador S is quite different, where red and neptune blue highlight various aspects of the watch, creating a very vibrant piece of mechanical art, and a true testimony that the sense of speed can be captured in a wristwatch. 84 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com

WITH THE ARRIVAL OF PETIT TROIS
le Valley, his fifth brick-and-mortar eatery, Ludo Lefebvre is indisputably the reigning king of French cuisine in Los Angeles. It’s a crown he wears proudly. Alongside partners Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, the Burgundy-born, four-time James Beard nominee has revolutionized French fare in the City of Angels with his side-by-side Highland Park brasseries, Trois Mec and Petit Trois. Both eateries could fit inside his spacious new Sherman Oaks locale, a 100-seat affair that wistfully reimagines an authentic Parisian boîte. This “authentic” Parisian experience was intentional. “We wanted it to feel like you were in Paris, regardless of where you are,” notes Estee Stanley of Hancock Design, who helped to execute his vision on the original Petit Trois as well. Together, floral wallpaper, green banquettes, checkerboard flooring, marble countertops, crisp white tablecloths and brass sconces cohesively create a restaurant that is both modern and traditional―what Lefebvre describes as “a truly traditional Parisian bistro.” Because of its sheer size, Lefebvre has been able to expand his concept to include additional fixtures. These include a bar, counter seating and a private dining room: a cozy place with custom-made wall hangings and light fixtures―perfect for the VIPs that flock to the Pied Piper of French cuisine. Its scale and seating aren’t the only things to have expanded: Petit Trois Le Valley is also, unlike its predecessor, a full-service bistro. French fan favorites such as a mouthwatering escargot dripping in butter, garlic and parsley, Croque Monsieur—Parisian ham, Bechamel and Swiss cheese—perfect steak frites and Trout Almondine with rice pilaf and toasted almonds are part 00 HAUTE LIVING

of an extended menu that now includes breakfast fare: fresh croissants, pain au chocolat, canelé and the new Mec Muffin, a morning sandwich guaranteed to satisfy both the French and Francophiles thanks to its pointed pairing of Parisian ham and American cheese. Such an ambitious project from a world-renowned chef may have been more expected in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood, but Lefebvre has a very sensible reason for choosing to open in the Valley: He wanted to be closer to home. “I have lived in Sherman Oaks since 2007, [and] it has always been my dream to open a restaurant in my neighborhood, one where my family and friends can come,” he says. “I want my children to be able to come visit me after school, grow up in the restaurant and bring their friends with them. I want it to be everyone’s favorite neighborhood restaurant.” Petit Trois Le Valley is certainly a spot where one can enjoy the very best French fare in Los Angeles, alongside carafes of French rosé, delectable pastries, fabulous cocktails (try the refreshing Fleur Du Mal—roséinfused vodka, grapefruit and lemon) and the main attraction: Lefebvre himself. “We really try to keep the same magical vibe as the original, even in the larger space,” he notes, adding, “We hope all our guests feel as though they have a little piece of Paris in Sherman Oaks.” Minus a view of the Eiffel Tower, he’s succeeded perfectly.

I REMEMBER YEARS AGO, MAKING TRIPS
north of New York City with my team at Restaurant DANIEL. It quickly became a tradition: Every Sunday, we would meet up at Auberge Maxime or the restaurant of Bernard le Bris in North Salem, which is today Vox and run by his brother Jean. Westchester was our destination of choice on our day off to have lunch together, laugh, relax, eat, drink, play Pétanque and of course plan the work week ahead. When my wife, Katherine, and I started talking about getting a house outside of the city, we knew we wanted to stay close enough that we could go often on weekends. I thought Westchester County could be great, so we began looking around South Salem, Katonah, Bedford and Pound Ridge until we came upon this house on a quiet street and were immediately charmed. I found out the incomparable Martha Stewart lived in the region and knew that was a sign of quality farming and produce in the area. The first weekend we spent up there, she brought over a basket full of fresh salads, vegetables and herbs from her garden as a welcome gift, along with beautiful, different colored eggs from various breeds of hens. You don’t get that in the city! Westchester is also known as horsebackriding country. Driving along the back roads, you pass by various horse farms and stables sprawled across the land. I immediately feel connected to nature and the beauty of my surroundings when I’m up there—a welcome change of pace. There are numerous parks to explore, including one of my favorites, the Ward Pound Ridge Reserve, which is the county’s largest park and offers activities like hiking, fishing and horseback riding. Local farms and farmer’s markets are abundant along the Hudson Valley. John Jay Homestead is a historic site that curates a quaint market on Saturdays from May through October, which is where we get most of our produce, eggs and cheese from when we’re up there. Past Cross River about 10 minutes Northeast is Muscoot Farm, an open-air interpretative museum and park from the 1900s. It’s home to year-round programming and a great seasonal market, but you can also just walk around and see the pigs, sheep, donkeys, horses, chickens and learn about the site’s history. The
00 HAUTE LIVING
Katonah Museum of Art is another beautiful establishment that perfectly caters to family and children through various creative and cultural outlets. Of course, the area is also bustling with great dining options. I love to get breakfast from the Katonah Reading Room—part boutique, part café, and located right by the train station. They have a wide and delicious selection of seasonal items and baked goods. Purdy’s Farmer & the Fish is another local favorite housed inside an 18th century farmhouse. The menu offers some of the best seafood and vegetables grown on-site; a musttry is the Downeast Lobster Roll. Other elegant spots include the handsome Inn at Pound Ridge by my dear friend chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the Bedford Post Inn, where you can enjoy a relaxing meal under the wisteria on the wrap-around terrace. A short drive east will take you to Bernard’s in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Bernard Bouïssou and I worked together a long time ago at the Plaza Athénée in the city. He has since settled in Connecticut and has done a tremendous job restoring an inn from the 1800s into a local dining establishment that the community truly cherishes. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy all that New York State has to offer. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 99
