ot many people would dare to take an Airstream up to 90 miles an hour, but Milo Ventimiglia, believe it or not, has always had a bad-boy side. Still, the truth behind his need for speed is much more Milo the man and less, perhaps, the rebel many used to make him out to be. He tested the limits of his 55 mph chrome caravan because he was hell-bent on getting to work on time. And that, too, is badass, though perhaps not in the conventional way. Which is okay, because conventional Milo Ventimiglia is very much not. Fans typically correlate him with one of two roles: Jess Mariano, Gilmore Girls’ rebel without a cause, or, more often these days, his current small-screen character, Jack Pearson, the flawed but fantastic dad of three on NBC’s This Is Us. The truth? He’s somewhere in between. The Milo Ventimiglia of today, a man on the brink of turning 44, toes the line between these two amalgamations. He has a thing for Harleys and favors leather jackets like Jess; like Jack, he is kind, responsible and paternal — an intriguing trait for a perpetual bachelor. Call it the best of both worlds. But let me backpedal here and set the scene for how Ventimiglia came to be speeding across the U.S. of A. in his big silver bullet. Last spring, he was about to start filming Evel, a limited series about daredevil Evel Knievel, in New Mexico. His transformation was complete: a lush, dyed-blond mane, blue contact lenses, a waddle, thatches of tufty chest hair. He learned to do wheelies on vintage motorcycles; no hardship, pure fun. And then, on March 13, two days before production commenced, Covid-19 shut it (along with the rest of Hollywood) all down. After hearing about the panic and the toilet paper wars back home in Los Angeles, he opted to stay in Albuquerque for three months. His rented house was already paid for, so why not? He hunkered down and chilled out. With Hollywood still shuttered months later, realization dawned that the road trip he had been attempting to take for the better part of three years, the one he never seemed to have enough time for, could finally happen. So he took a Covid test, headed to his hometown of Anaheim, Calif. — which also happens to be the home of Disneyland and Great Adventure (so fitting) — to give his mom and dad a hug and made tracks. “There was no obligation to be on set, which meant that I could be anywhere,” he explains to me over Zoom in March. “So I said, ‘You know, I’m just going to go on the road for a little bit.’” That “little bit” turned into a 10,000-mile adventure: a pitstop in Utah to visit one sister, a journey to Oregon (where he also owns a home) to see the other, some camping in between and the purchase of his hot new ride (that Airstream) — which, though it sounds so “f---ing chic and cool,” was a pretty big departure from a Harley, his transportation of choice. (And it was definitely preferable to that one time in the past year that he took a flight, double-masked, shield up, hoodie pulled tight, looking like some kind of “weird video game character.”) Ventimiglia would have kept on going, too, if duty hadn’t called. “I was just taking the southern route, and my plan was to go out to Georgia, hang a left and go up the Eastern Seaboard, and then come back across the Dakotas and whatnot, go back through Montana, Idaho and Oregon again and drop back down. But then I got called up again on This Is Us, so I was like, ‘Oh, all right. Let me just turn around and take the fastest road I can to get back to California.’ So that’s what I did.”
16 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
He didn’t haul ass the entire way — he stayed mostly within the confines of the trucking and trailering limits of 55 mph — but yes, there were moments when the gas pedal became his best friend. (This might explain why he has temporarily traded in his slow ride for a swifter one: He arrived at our photo shoot in the new BMW M8 Competition. Coincidentally, he had just shot a commercial for the brand’s M4.) And if he had truly been running late? Forget about it. He would have done whatever it took to make it to the set on time for the September 19 start date. People were counting on him, after all. The Rolex Submariner he’s currently wearing — which is engraved with This Is Us and his initials — serves as a pretty stellar reminder. For seven out of every 12 months for the past five years, he has lived and breathed This Is Us, the tearjerker tale of the Pearson family — Vietnam War vet Jack; his wife, Rebecca (Mandy Moore); and the Big Three, biological twins Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and adopted son Randall (Sterling K. Brown) — which time-hops between the 1970s and the present day. Ventimiglia plays Jack Pearson poignantly. He struggles with his own demons as a recovering alcoholic, but he prevails in the end, managing to wrestle them to the ground for the greater good of his family. Ventimiglia has accrued a substantial cult following, endless adoration and three consecutive best actor Emmy nominations as a result. Yet his character has been dead for three seasons (which is a weird statement only for those who haven’t seen the show). Surprisingly, Jack’s death wasn’t as traumatic for Ventimiglia as you might expect, given how much chronic weeping the series invokes in its viewers. “I always knew that the character in the present day was gone, and because I knew that he was gone, I just played him ‘as if’ and focused on exploring younger Jack — Jack in Vietnam, Jack falling in love, Jack kind of reimagining who he is, being a veteran of war. I always knew we had a lot of latitude to travel with him, and there was going to be a lot to explore. I also knew that at a certain point, just given science, the kids were going to be growing up, and we had to age with them.” So it might be the beginning of the end for the hit series, which reaches 8.2 million viewers per week in its fifth season. “That’s what we’re hearing, so I guess you could say ‘last season-ish,’” Ventimiglia tells me. “Dan Fogelman, our show’s creator, always imagined fewer episodes than that, but given the broadcast schedule, [the network] wants 20-some episodes a year, as many seasons as you can get. But with that, creatively, we run into problems. I mean, my character is dead, [and because of the timeline changes] the younger actors who play our kids are growing up and bumping against the ages of the actors who play the same characters as teenagers. So it’s kind of like, well, which one do you choose? There are a lot of roadblocks creatively that the writers just can’t get around. I mean, they can do tons of visual effects to make me look like I’m in my 20s, but we can’t make growing 13- and 14-year-old kids look like they’re 8 again. It’s like reconciling quantum physics or something. Time marches on, and we really can’t hold it back.” He pauses, then laughs. “Do you remember that photograph in Back to the Future that Marty McFly has, where his sister and brother start to disappear, and then he starts to disappear? I feel that way with Jack. There’s a version where we’re running out of runway with stories that we’re telling for him, but it doesn’t mean that Jack’s story can’t support a Kevin story or a Randall story or a Kate story or a Rebecca story.” If the next season is to be the show’s last, the beginning of the end is imminent. The fifth season will wrap this week, while the sixth is slated to start shooting this summer, coronavirus restrictions withstanding. And though his storyline may be supporting the others, Ventimiglia is adamantly not done with Jack — or the show — just yet. In fact, he’s exploring new challenges by directing his second episode of the series; “Jerry 2.0” will air on May 18. The show has provided him a platform to grow, with it as well as within it, and he wouldn’t change that for the world. “I love my job, and I love my crew. We’ve got a great cast, and they’re all wonderful people,” he says, adding, “I’m doing the show as long as they’ll have me, and I think I’ll be on it as long as the show’s on.”

efore meeting Ventimiglia, I get the lowdown. The truth is uncomplicated: above all else, the guy is just so f---ing nice. And the thing is, I want him to be nice. You want him to be nice. After all, he plays the GOAT of TV dads. It would be a crying shame if he turned out to be a jerk. When I ask him if he would describe himself this way, his mouth curls into his signature lopsided smile, the result of dead nerves in his lower lip. “I crack a joke sometimes and say, ‘What I lack in talent I make up for in being nice.’ So hopefully people just want to be around me for that working purpose.” He’s being modest, but his comment is also accurate. He’s the kind of person who makes everyone feel special, who pays it forward without expecting anything in return. It’s not an act. He’s the real deal. An example: he spent the last few months commuting between Los Angeles and Orange County to take care of his parents. His Vietnam War veteran dad, Peter, “broke his leg out of f---ing nowhere,” and his mom, Carol, is in cancer remission. “All of a sudden, baby boy has got to go down and do a bit more for them,” he says, noting that this is why he’s already received Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine. But more important, he has always tried to see them as much as possible (or as much as his work schedule allows). “My parents only live 45 minutes away from me, so I try to go and see them as much as I can, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes I’m like, ‘Hey, Mom and Dad, I’ve got two hours on a Sunday morning. Can you guys come up to L.A. and just hang out for a minute quietly, because I’ve been talking all week and I just want to sit with you?’ And they do. My mom and dad are the best. They’re incredible people.” This inherent loveliness is why Ventimiglia is close with his castmates, and even closer with the crew. In fact, he’s kind of like — wait for it — the dad of the production…even when the show is not technically in production. “I would check in on random people over the break. Like, I’d call one of my electrics, who had a hip replacement. ‘Hey, Tony, how’s the hip? How’s Billy doing? Oh, Billy’s good? Okay, cool. Just let the boys know I’m thinking about them.’ I’d check in on people, just so we all find a way of keeping connected.” This, of course, includes costars Brown, Metz, Hartley, Moore, Chris Sullivan (who plays Kate’s husband, Toby) and Susan Kelechi Watson (who plays Randall’s wife, Beth). He likens this tight-knit crew to the family you leave behind when you head to college for the first time: you know they’re always going to be there for you, and that you’ll always make your way back to them. On set is no different. He shows up on his days off, often with a camera in hand to play unofficial cast photographer. He is a cheerleader, waiting in the wings to offer support during critical scenes. And he is always there to celebrate the endless hours that the 300-plus-person crew put in. “I try to boost morale and make sure everyone’s feeling good, and when we’re on set, spoil them with food trucks and coffee trucks and all that. And Mandy is right there with me. There are usually a lot of messages and gifts from Mom and Dad,” he confides. And in his opinion, that’s the way it should always be, especially when your name is the first on the call sheet. Sure, its purpose is to organize the schedule, keep the cast and crew accountable, but for him, it’s a responsibility that he takes very, very seriously. “I’ve got to make sure I do my job, but in addition to that, I’ve got to make sure the tone on set is fun and that everybody feels welcome, everybody feels their place of contribution to the making of the show, for the morale of the group.” Not that it would make much difference if he was number one or number 20: he treats everyone the same regardless of his rank, or theirs. “I’m always just there to make people laugh and feel good, hopefully.” This sentiment extends far beyond his This Is Us family. Ventimiglia uses
his celebrity status to give back to a plethora of philanthropic organizations in a very hands-on way. In 2019, the year before the world went to shit, he was circumnavigating the globe, stopping in Kenya with the Red Nose Day campaign to end child poverty. Immediately afterward, he traveled to Washington, D.C., to hang out with military vets like his dad and meet current Defense Department employees at the Pentagon to discuss a stronger military-civilian connection. And I haven’t even mentioned the United Service Organization (USO) tours he’s been doing for over a decade, the most recent of which was a 10-show, six-day holiday tour across Europe in December 2018 to bring deployed servicepeople some holiday cheer. There aren’t many folks who would actively set foot in hot zones like Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan, but Ventimiglia has never shied away from an opportunity to help others. “I’ve been in the business for 25 years, but it’s not lost on me, the position that I have in a public sense, in a social sense, because of what I’ve done in front of the camera. So what I like to do is use that for good. If I can impact someone positively just by smiling at them or acknowledging them, seeing them, that’s great. I find it so much easier to smile at someone, so much easier to be kind to someone — and not just do it because I expect it in return, but just to put good out into the world,” he says, adding, “I can’t only think of myself. I’m always thinking about everyone else. That’s just the way I’m built. I take everybody and everything into consideration.” And sometimes, that’s been to his detriment. “I definitely would put people before me all the time, and I think people took advantage of that when I was younger. I wasn’t a carpet to be walked on, but I think I spent so much time trying to make other people happy that I really forgot how to make myself happy. Then I started to understand, ‘Well, if I can fill myself up and make myself whole, then I can actually provide for others.’” He came to this conclusion when he reached his 30s, when he had already been acting for more than a decade (having made his debut on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1995), with TV projects like Gilmore Girls, American Dreams and Heroes as well as films like Rocky Balboa (playing Rocky Junior) under his belt. “I went through a breakup and then kind of rebelled a little bit — my own version of rebelling — which I don’t even know how to describe. It just felt like a rebellious time. And then I kind of had this moment where I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I’ve done well in my career. What do I want to do? How do I want to grow and see my career grow? What do I really want to present to the world?’ And I just figured out that I’ve got to be happy and do things that I want to do. Even if there’s something I don’t want to do, it doesn’t mean I have to be a jerk. I can politely say no, thank you. I’ve actually gotten really good at saying no. If I’m invited somewhere and don’t really want to go but feel obligated, [in the past, I’d have gone]. Now, I can say, ‘Thank you very much, but I can’t. Thank you. Thank you.’ Literally, I’ll keep saying thank you until people kind of get it. I didn’t want to run myself ragged being in service to so many different people. So I got to a point where I was like, ‘I’ve got to make sure that I’m focusing on myself and looking out for myself, and with that, I can be truly available to other people.’” Around the same time, he came to another realization: his career had to come first. “Everything is second position to work — everything. I’ve had friendships and relationships that definitely had a hard time with that. I’d get home from work and a girlfriend would want to spend time together, and I’d have to make sure I did spend time with her, sit down and eat, maybe turn on a movie for 20 minutes. But when my bowl is empty, I’ve got to go into my office and close the door and work for another two hours so my lines are spot on and I’m ready to be on set the next day, so I’m not wasting time for the crew. You kind of have to dedicate yourself to it in a greater way, and some things are going to be sacrificed while others can run concurrently.” So he gets it when the situation is flipped; he doesn’t get upset when a date has to be postponed or a friend cancels plans. “This has very much led me to be accepting when friends and romantic relationships have things that are important to them. It’s like, ‘Yeah, go do that, I understand.’ You have to give someone room to live their life to their fullest, and hopefully those two lives can just run on the same track.”

“I’ve learned that you’ve got to put yourself first. You can only really be available to others if you’re doing the things that you want to do, doing the things that make you happy.”
ith his youthful good looks (which he credits to genetics and, “let’s be honest, f---ing boring things” like his diet, beauty sleep, and not drinking or doing drugs), penchant for motorcycles and bachelor status, Ventimiglia reminds me of a young George Clooney. At 43, there’s something boyish about him, yet he’s very distinctly a grown-ass man. The dinner he describes making the night before our conversation — mac and cheese, but an elevated mac and cheese — just serves to punctuate this point. His process was definitely labor-intensive, or at least more work than ripping open a box of Kraft. He shares his process step-by-step, saying, “I cooked the pasta and drained it, running a cold bath on it real quick to stop the noodles from cooking and to keep them firm. I put cream cheese inside the hot pot and let that kind of milk up a little bit before throwing the pasta back in with just a touch of ghee to give it a different taste other than just butter, and then I put the powdered Annie’s mix on it with some smoked salt on top. I made it a little fancier. I also had an arugula salad with a truffle oil dressing that I made, and a sweet potato that I forgot at home because I was going to bring it to work today. Damn.” When I tease him about his gourmet take on the ultimate frat-boy food, he laughs. “Motherf---er said truffle oil? What an asshole!” But in all seriousness, the dude can cook (even if he does prefer Postmates for ordering food when his parents come to visit). Survival of the fittest and all that. “I mean, I’m a 43-year old single guy, you know. I’ve lived on my own for 25, almost 26 years.” His home for the past 20 years has been the west Los Angeles suburb of Mar Vista, once the sleepy kid sister of Venice, which has blossomed into the hub known as Silicon Beach. Not that he spends much time there — Ventimiglia is a busy guy. When he’s not working on This Is Us (he has a 5 a.m. start time, with hair, makeup and daily Covid-19 tests, plus 12 hours of shooting daily) or traveling, he’s making films like the romantic comedy Second Act with Jennifer Lopez, Grace of Monaco with Nicole Kidman and The Art of Racing in the Rain with Amanda Seyfried, as well as putting in endless hours with his production company, DiVide Pictures, which has produced projects like the dramedy Relationship Status, web series Chosen and two comic books with Top Cow Productions, among other ventures. In addition to shooting season six of his hit show, he has bigger plans for directing in the future. “That’s always been a goal, to direct more. But every time I’d line up a directing gig, I’d get an acting gig. The acting gigs pay
20 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
more and are a little shorter timewise. But as my career marches on and I’m able to maybe be a little more selective, then I’ll have a little bit more time to focus on directing,” he says. He’d also like to see the Evel Knievel series get off the ground, though he’s aware this might not be the right time. “Corona kind of kind of killed it for the moment, and hopefully it will be back, but it’s kind of tough with the state of the world to bring back a character like that,” he muses. “He did a lot to inspire people, but he really wasn’t the best guy. I think if anything, we’d be telling the story as a bit of a cautionary tale, like be careful who you exalt to hero status.” (This turn of phrase strikes me as being particularly apt, given that one of Ventimiglia’s most famous roles was playing superhero Peter Petrelli on NBC’s Heroes.) In the meantime, he’s not losing sleep over it. His life is too full to do otherwise. In addition to his plethora of projects, he’s back in school, after a six-year hiatus, to learn Japanese. “Japan is always my travel go-to. I love Japan so much that I started going to school to learn the language, to read, write and speak. Part of me feels like, yes, I’m getting a practical skill, being able to communicate. But also, I feel like I’m learning art.” If anything, the last year has taught him to take advantage of the time he has versus the time he doesn’t, to focus on the things he loves and to continue to live his life the way he lives it: unapologetically, but nicely. “The last year reaffirmed my life a little bit,” he says. “I came to the conclusion that I’m just going to continue the way I live, because the world needs it. Maybe if someone picks up on a positive attitude and they hang on to that, and their next interaction becomes positive when it could have been a shit show, well, that’s good. It sounds very simple, like Forrest Gump simple, but it’s true: do what makes you happy. It’s definitely a hard lesson that I had to learn. I’ve had friends in my life — my closest friends — finally say to me, ‘Hey, Mi, you’ve got to live your life, the version of the life that you want to live. Don’t make excuses or feel the need to justify anything to anybody.’ We are all deserving of having control over our own lives, the direction of our own lives and being to have happiness, success and companionship.” And there you have it. Nice guys — truly nice guys — don’t always finish last, nor do they always put others first. They do the best they can and try to be the best version of themselves they can possibly be. In fact, I think that’s what we’d call “winning.”

ROMERO BRITTO SHARES THE ETHOS BEHIND HIS JOYFUL ART — WHICH ALSO SERVES AS INSPIRATION FOR HIS RECENT COLLABORATION WITH THE SAN DIEGO ZOO. BY LAURA SCHREFFLER
FEATURE
IN THESE DARK TIMES (WHICH ARE CURRENTLY STARTING TO
get a little lighter), the art Romero Britto creates is essential. As the founder of the Happy Art Movement, the Brazilian-born and Miami-made artist has created a visual language of love, hope and happiness all its own that inspires millions worldwide, using vibrant, iconic imagery and fun patterns to reflect his optimistic view of the world around him. His work was a natural fit for San Diego, a SoCal city known for its sunshine-soaked beach culture, which is why he decided to partner with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance for a one-ofa-kind mural, which was unveiled on March 3, World Wildlife Day. Now, the happy art of Britto, whose work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in more than 100 countries, including the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Cirque Du Soleil at Super Bowl XLI, and has been credited with the largest monumental sculpture in London’s Hyde Park history (in addition to serving as an official artist for the 2010 World Cup, ambassador to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and honorary torchbearer for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games), can be found in San Diego. We spoke with Britto about the ethos of his piece, why he decided to partner with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, why happy art is especially essential now and what inspires him.
PHOTO COURTESY OF SAN DIEGO ZOO WILDLIFE ALLIANCE
Haute Living: Can you tell us more about your collaboration with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and why this partnership is so meaningful and personally important to you? Romero Britto: I love nature and grew up in Brazil — we always had a dog and chickens, and my brother had a horse, so partnering with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance for me is a wonder. I love seeing animals and how they move and behave. Visiting the San Diego Zoo is very special because you can have an idea of how these animals live in their habitats: the polar bears, koalas, gorillas and so many more. If you close your eyes, you’d think you’re not in California. Each animal is truly so unique and special. That’s what’s so beautiful about nature — you simply cannot compare one to the other. My hope is that people become more aware, because sometimes we get so caught up with so many things. I hope people realize that there are beautiful creatures living in this world and that little by little they’re losing space, and they don’t have the voice to advocate for themselves. I’m proud to partner with organizations like the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance that care about conservation and the preservation of future generations. HL: Tell us about your experience visiting the grounds. RB: My first visit to the San Diego Zoo was really special. It reminds me a lot of the time when I was on the board of the Miami Metro Zoo. I had always heard it was very beautiful. I loved seeing the animals and walking around with my son. My visit made me think about the world as a whole and how important it is for us to preserve it. The setting is very beautiful, and you really get a glimpse of these habitats, even if you’re not able to go on a safari or travel across the world to see these wonderful animals in their natural habitats. I was inspired by how tall and beautiful the giraffes are — so elegant. She sees the world at such a high level and can get close to a bird but still cannot fly. I thought about putting her with her neck coming out of the bushes to represent that. That’s just one example. Seeing all
of these individual creatures up close helped me create a space in the world where they all live together, safe and bright and hopeful. HL: Can you speak to the Happy Art Movement and how it relates to your partnership with the Alliance? Is making others happy an important part of your life? RB: Sometimes things just happen and you don’t even know what you’re doing. Throughout the years people came to me, collectors and fans, and told me, “Romero, your art makes me feel happy. I want to have your art all over my house because it makes me feel so good.” A friend of mine finally said that I had created a movement, so I had to embrace the fact that I created this thing that’s going on out there and which is very beautiful, and I’m very honored. This collaboration means a lot because I grew up loving nature and animals. I always thought about having a zoo of my very own one day! But at least I have this collaboration, and it is a dream come true. The San Diego Zoo, the most beautiful zoo in the world, to invite me to collaborate with them and embark on this journey to bring awareness to people and help them understand how important it is to preserve and conserve animals around the world. I’m so grateful to be able to bring that hope to people everywhere. HL: What does this work signify to you? How do you feel about the future of conversation? RB: I think one of the things we all want is inspiration. People see images that can inspire them to do better, not to do worse. I hope my art might. I’m sure that everyone here at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance hopes that when someone comes to the zoo with their family or their loved ones and sees my mural, they’re going to think about where these animals come from, and are they going to be around for another 500 years or 1,000 years? The hope is…yes! So let’s do something about it. Each person can go back to their home and their community and help. Let’s say you’re going to buy a product, but you learn that product is hurting creatures somewhere across the world. You can change that. I hope this work can inspire people to do better, not worse. HL: Do you find more or less beauty in what would be considered ordinary? RB: What can be ordinary for one can be extraordinary for another. Some people may see more beauty in something manmade than something that is nature-made. I see beauty in nature — from animals to flowers to water. If you look at simply just water, you can see how beautiful it can be. It all depends on how people value things. I definitely love nature, and I think there are so many beautiful things that we can get inspired by. HL: What to you is the greatest luxury in life, and why? RB: Wow — the greatest luxury in life is just to wake up in the morning and have your own space. I think space is very special. Nature is very beautiful, so I think if you wake up in the morning and see nature and open space with no destruction, no broken pieces, that’s luxury. We just moved to a beautiful new facility where I create my pieces. We worked for almost a year to be able to move into the building, and now it looks like a studio in a palace. I wish I could accommodate everybody there. A space with so many colors and textures and details. My dream is to make it as big as possible and make it as accessible as possible for people to come and have a glimpse of what it is to live in a very creative space. It’s beautiful. I’m very excited to go back and create images of hope and happiness. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 23

+LAND OR SEA Louis Vuitton rethinks the diving watch with its new Street Diver collection.
LAUNCHED IN 2002, THE TAMBOUR WAS THE WATCH THAT
put Louis Vuitton on the map in the world of haute horlogerie. Over the years, it amassed a loyal group of admirers, not least because the company was always innovating new varieties of the model while keeping it instantly recognizable. Inspired by the shape of a drum, the Tambour is one of the very few watches that is larger at the base than at the bezel. It further expresses its pedigree with the words “Louis Vuitton” engraved in the case band. Really, the design is timeless; the Tambour looks as contemporary today as it did back in 2002. Louis Vuitton has always excelled in knowing exactly what its clients want. With the Street Diver, the brand has created a diving watch as it is worn and appreciated the most: as a fashionable statement on the wrist that spends most of its time outside the water. In its design, the company emphasized its utilitarian character by playing with color. The elapsed minutes, an essential feature of any diving watch, can be measured by the internal rotating bezel, which is operated by the color-contrasting crown placed between 1 and 2 o’clock. It is color-matched by the hour markers and the minute hand, which cleverly resembles the iconic Louis Vuitton “V.” While looking good comes naturally for the Street Diver, that doesn’t mean it’s out of its element in the water.
28 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com
Thanks to its screw-down crown, internal rotating diving bezel and 100-meter water-resistance, it is a capable companion when going (scuba) diving. The company is launching four different versions of the Street Diver, each highlighting different colors. The Neon Black features a case made from stainless steel with a black PVD coating, offering a stunning contrast with the neon yellow accents that give the watch a lot of character. It is the only watch in the Street Diver collection that also has a bezel with a PVD coating, giving it more of a tool-watch appearance. The Tambour Street Diver Skyline Blue has a blue PVD coating on its case, which stands out against the bezel of polished stainless steel. The vibrant shade of light blue makes the watch’s details stand out against its dark blue backdrop in an almost nautical way. The Tambour Street Diver Black Blaze combines black PVD-coated elements with pink gold, creating a rich contrast. All three watches have a 44mm large case and are fitted with an automatic movement that can be admired through the sapphire caseback with Louis Vuitton logo. The fourth new design, the Tambour Street Diver Pacific White, is the most elegant, and it is also the smallest. Its case measures 39.5mm in diameter, and it is crafted from polished stainless steel. It the only one fitted with a quartz movement instead of an automatic caliber.

+THE art of evolution
Rolex has always honored evolution, and the brand’s watches have become the benchmark in their category. In 2021, the company further refines its offerings, proving that evolution can be very exciting. BY MARTIN GREEN

to its original 36mm diameter. Powered by caliber 3230, it is a refined sports watch that you can take to the ends of the earth (and back), but it goes equally well with a suit and tie. Rolex underscores this versatility by making the new Explorer also available in Rolesor, withthe case and bracelet combining stainless steel with gold. Those looking for a slightly larger yet equally robust watch will be well served by the Explorer II, also in a new generation. Measuring 42mm in diameter, it offers plenty of room to display two time zones, thanks to its characteristic set of hands. Rolex has optimized the Chromalight display, which means the numerals glow bright blue in low-light conditions but look remarkably white otherwise. Performance and precision are ensured by caliber 3285, with automatic winding and patented Chronergy escapement.

The difference a dial can make becomes especially clear with the new Datejust 36. Rolex has a rich tradition of creating a wide variety of dials, in particular for the Datejust and DayDate collections. This is done in-house, as the brand has its own dial manufacture. That also enables it to make the new palm motif, for which a special laser was used. The new fluted dial motif adds an extra layer of depth and refinement to the watch. New dials were also in the stars for the Daytona — quite literally, as they are made from meteorite. The distinctive pattern of these rocks from space, which becomes visible after they have been cut and treated with acid, gives the Daytona extra appeal and makes this chronograph even more exclusive than it already was. Rolex is offering these new dials on the white gold model with Oysterflex bracelet and on the yellow and Everose gold models with matching bracelets.
Rolex and diamonds have been synonymous for decades, and it is a tradition the brand is continuing with great passion and expertise. This year it plays with color as it launches the Day-Date 36 on an alligator leather strap with a pave-set case, dial and bracelet. Available in yellow, white, or Everose gold, each featuring Roman numerals in a distinct color, they put pave-set watches once again firmly on the map. Their appearance is bold and distinct but also refreshingly modern. For ladies who enjoy a watch with a full pave setting, Rolex now offers the 28 mm Lady-Datejust. Fitted with perpetual caliber 2236, this watch features a case, bezel, dial and bracelet set with brilliant-cut diamonds in yellow gold, which gives it a classic appearance. Subtle details make all the difference, with not only the perfectly set diamonds but also the black Roman numerals, which seem to float above the dials. This gives the watch an undeniably luxurious appearance in the way only Rolex can.

+Pure transparency Hublot’s New Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Full Sapphire takes transparency to the next level.
AT HUBLOT, THEY HAVE A PASSION FOR MATERIALS.
Whether it’s gold, ceramic, or sapphire, they love to see if they can improve it or give it a color that has never been achieved before. In 2016, the brand introduced its very first sapphire watch, and things developed quickly. Not only was the company able to create sapphire in different colors, but it could also make them in modest volume. (While this sounds less exclusive, the production process of sapphire watches is so intensive that being able to make more of them is a major achievement.) Hublot kicked off Watches & Wonders 2021 with another amazing accomplishment: a Big Bang Integral Tourbillon where both the case and bracelet are made of sapphire. Hublot went for ultimate transparency with the sapphire bracelet, which also made it a challenging feat to accomplish. No compromises were allowed, so the bracelet needed to remain as transparent as possible, while flexibility, durability and wearing comfort all had to be at the highest level. Hublot achieved this by cleverly screwing each link into the next with the help of titanium inserts that take as little away from the transparency of the sapphire as possible. Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe tells more about how this unique watch came to be. “For such an exceptional creation, we opted for the new Automatic Tourbillon caliber with its
32 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com
sapphire bridges, the transparency of which creates a stunning spectacle. The act of creating an integrated case and bracelet from sapphire was deemed impossible. But we were the first brand to gain perfect mastery of sapphire, industrializing it and making it reproducible in series production. It took us five years to bring our first sapphire cases to life, and almost as long for the bracelet. Producing both from sapphire and integrating them together is the pinnacle of the in-depth work undertaken by Hublot’s teams. We are proud to be the ones writing the first lines in this new chapter in the history of materials.” As Guadalupe points out, such an exquisite creation must be combined with one of the best movements the brand has to offer: in this case, Hublot’s latest manufacture caliber HUB6035, which combines a tourbillon with automatic winding. This is done by placing a 22-karat white gold micro-rotor at 12 o’clock. As most of the movement’s bridges, including the main plate, are also made from sapphire, the watch’s transparent nature takes full effect. Hublot will make 30 pieces of the Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Full Sapphire at the price of $422,000. Those owners will get to wear a groundbreaking watch that signals the start of a new era for Hublot as it further pursues the possibilities of this exciting new achievement.

a powerful visual impact. With part of its gear train placed on the dial side, accompanied by a high-tech flying carrousel, it is a true horological delicacy that won’t go unnoticed. The new Freak X Razzle Dazzle is even more of an eye-catcher. The pattern is reminiscent of a zebra, an animal that uses its stripes to conceal itself and confuse predators. (During World War I, the British Royal Navy painted its ships with a similar pattern, hoping to confuse the enemy to such an extent that it was hard(er) for them to place a hit.) Of course, it later became quite a popular pattern in fashion and the art scene. The reason is rather obvious, as the geometrical pattern is captivating, close to hypnotizing. To achieve the pattern with the high quality required by Ulysse Nardin, a combination of three different techniques is used. A laser makes the intricate shapes on the movement parts, after which a combination of electroplating and galvanic treatment with lacquer give it its final appearance. Ulysse Nardin will make 30 of the Freak X Razzle Dazzle, with strap options in black or white, both featuring “point de bride” stitching that match the watch nicely. What all 30 pieces also have in common is the 43mm case made from titanium, featuring sandblasted and satin finishes, as well as a DLC coating. The automatic movement has a power reserve of 72 hours and comes with a flying carrousel, visible at the front, which makes a full rotation every hour. A pioneer in the use of silicium, Ulysse Nardin features this innovative material in both the balance wheel and the oversize oscillator.

true haute + Acomplication The new Ref. 5236P-001 In-line Perpetual Calendar is a first for Patek Philippe. BY MARTIN GREEN
PHOTOS COURTESY OF PATEK PHILIPPE
THE PERPETUAL CALENDAR HAS ALWAYS HELD AN
important place in the history of Patek Philippe. In 1925, the brand launched its very first perpetual calendar wristwatch, and in 1941 it introduced Ref.1518, combining the perpetual calendar with a chronograph, something that had never been done before on a watch made in series. The company always had a strong presence when it came to pocket watches as well, and in 1972, it introduced a novel perpetual calendar with in-line display. Now, part of its rich legacy in this field merges with the introduction of the new Ref. 5236P-001 In-line Perpetual Calendar. Fitted in a 41.3mm Calatrava case made from platinum and combined with a blue lacquered dial with black gradation, the Ref. 5236P-001 is subtle in appearance, perfectly setting the stage to let the unique in-line perpetual calendar function shine. Day, date and month are positioned in a single window under the Patek Philippe brand name. The symmetry is continued at the lower part of the dial, where the subdial for
the seconds also houses the moon phase indicator. It is flanked on the right with the leap-year indicator, while day or night is shown through the hole on the left. With this balanced appearance, the Ref. 5236P-001 looks simple while it is, in fact, a very complex watch. No less than three new patents are incorporated in the movement. To make this unique display of the perpetual calendar possible, Patek Philippe used caliber 31-260 as a base movement. This movement is a reliable performer and looks especially beautiful. Patek Philippe tuned it to be perfect for the Ref. 5236P-001 by changing the micro-rotor from gold to platinum for more mass and increasing the rate to 4 Hz/28,800 vph. This results in better rate stability and increased precision. The movement now also uncouples the automatic winding system as soon as the watch is wound manually to reduce wear. With the Ref. 5236P-001, Patek Philippe is continuing its legacy as a pioneer in perpetual calendars and confirming the important place this complication holds within its collection. @hautetime HAUTE LIVING 37

Consumers have a choice of three colors: Carpathian Grey, Yulong White and Santorini Black, or Carpathian Grey and Yulong White with a contrast roof in Narvik Black. Prices for the Defender V8 start at £98,505 for the 90 and £101,150 OTR for the 110 in the U.K. For more information and to configure the new Defender, visit www.landrover.com/Defender.

in Bentley’s 101-year history. Exuding the ultimate performance-focused interpretation of the world’s benchmark luxury Grand Tourer, the car was designed, engineered, developed and handcrafted in Bentley’s carbon-neutral luxury automotive factory. This third-generation model is built on a long tradition of Speed variants. Building further on the first-generation Continental GT Speed in 2007, which was inspired by the 3-Litre Speed models of the 1920s, the latest GT Speed continues the bloodline by representing the ultimate combination of luxury and performance in a Grand Touring package. “The new Continental GT Speed represents the very pinnacle of performance grand touring,” says Matthias Rabe, member of the Board for Engineering at Bentley Motors. “This new model is the most powerful expression of Continental GT values, exciting and dynamic, with unique Speed detailing to enhance the ownership experience and offering customers more control over the character of the car.” The new Bentley Continental GT Speed is a driver’s car. The Electronic AllWheel Steering enhances its dynamic nature in Bentley and Comfort driving modes. However, this is even more apparent in Sport mode. The steering combines with Bentley Dynamic Ride and an electronic limited-slip differential for a level of agility unlike any other Bentley road car.
Featuring an Active All-Wheel drive, the traction control and torque distribution have been recalibrated in all driver modes to provide a noticeable character shift relative to Continental GT. Maintaining Bentley’s philosophy of the vehicle feeling progressive and secure yet still dynamic, this approach rewards drivers of all abilities. For the first time in a Bentley, the latest generation of the Continental GT Speed introduces the use of an electronic rear differential (eLSD) that provides increased lateral capacity, improved longitudinal stability, enhanced on-throttle adjustability and better traction in adverse road conditions. The new Continental GT Speed is blessed with a muscular bodywork inspired by the original. Unique exterior detailing complements a powerful, athletic stance, blending seamlessly with the Continental GT’s effortless elegance. This model also adds a Dark Tint radiator grille and lower bumper grille and unique, more-sculpted sports sills, a Dark Tint radiator matrix, and discreet Speed badging in chrome on the front fender. The 22” Speed wheels in bright silver are another signature feature, with the option of a dark tint or black gloss finish. The new four-seater Continental GT Speed interior redefines luxury and showcases Bentley’s expertise in creating the world’s most refined automotive interiors. Handcrafted materials blend with unique trim and badging that are only available in the Speed and can be further personalized with a choice of 15 primary and 11 secondary hide colors and the use of leather in lieu of Alcantara for the Speed color split. Bentley’s Diamond in Diamond quilting is included as standard, and Speed embroidered headrests distinguish the cabin of the most potent Continental GT. A range of veneers is available, with Piano Black veneer as standard. Customers can also choose Crown Cut Walnut, Dark Stained Burr Walnut or Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus at no extra cost, with three open-pore options (Dark Burr Walnut, Crown Cut Walnut and Koa) available as additional choices. The car is equipped with an uprated version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine, delivering 659 PS (650 bhp) – a 4 percent increase of 24 PS over the current W12 model – while maintaining an extraordinary 900 Nm (664 lb. ft) of torque. It can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, while the top speed is measured at 208 mph (335 km/h). It is also equipped with the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) System, which allows the driver to experience an even greater level of freedom before the Speed’s safety systems intervene to correct any anomalies. The official price has not yet been announced, but the top-of-the-line variant is expected to start at $202,500 for the Continental GT V8 and $218,900 for the Continental GT W12.

CRESCERE MEANS “TO GROW” IN LATIN, AND THE REVOLUTIONARY DESIGN
of this superyacht by U.S.-based designer J. David Weiss brings forward more eco-friendly technologies, offering the persona of a modern-day luxury vessel with a fresher, greener outlook. The uncluttered, clean line of this 132-meter boat is a sharp and futuristic nod to the future of superyachts. “It’s not designed purely as a ‘party boat,’” says Weiss. “The space allocation instead follows a dual-use owner vision of ‘Rest + ReCreate,’ with all interior social ‘ReCreate’ spaces localized inside the naturally lit and openable greenhouse, and ‘Rest’ spaces in the surrounding darker, quieter ‘cocoon’ areas.” The Crescere has its own tropical garden and a greenhouse core. Weiss aimed to make the boat spacious and airy, a place where the guests can relax. The lounge has an intelligent watering system controlled autonomously via custom software and a raft of sensors. The massive glass areas blur the distinction between the guests and the nature around them, and they also bring in abundant sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lights. The tender can carry cars, so the owner can take along their car collection. The highlight has to be the built-in saltwater pool. The 52-by-10-foot lap pool disappears when not in use and cleverly transforms into a helipad. To access the pool, glass panels rise out of the foredeck while high-speed pumps fill it with saltwater. The hull is retro-inspired, taking cues from a classic sailboat. However, its heart is as advanced as it can get. Powered by a hybrid power train of electric and diesel, the engine is accompanied by biofuel generators and solar panels, which charge the big battery banks. The electric motors are used for everyday purposes, while the diesel power source is used when additional speed is required. Though it’s a large yacht, Crescere has an ample 40 mph speed, akin to smaller vessels. In all, Crescere is poised to be a globally recognized mega vessel with the soul of a smaller, sportier yacht, with a green conscience to boot.

EXPLORER YACHTS ARE A SIGHT TO BEHOLD. THE LATEST BY
KM Yachtbuilders is special in every way. Under construction since early in the summer of 2019, the 23.7-meter superyacht was built for a second-time adventurer of the Arctic and Antarctic region. She takes her name, Vinson of Antarctica, after the highest mountain on the Antarctic continent. The yacht will soon commence its sea trials from the Makkum shipyard on the North Sea, and the first trip will be to Norway. After the summer, the crew plans to sail to South America, ending at Puerto Williams in Chile, the southernmost inhabited place in the world. The Vinson of Antarctica is a design by Tony Castro Design and is based on the 22.5-meter Pelagic Australis, which was the result of adventurer Skip Novak’s first 14 years of high latitude sailing. Founder Peter Wilson of MCM Newport said in a statement: “I was honored to be asked by the project team to join them in 2018, sharing with them the construction and management expertise acquired through over 90 MCM projects to date. KM Yachtbuilders had already been selected to build the yacht. With their long track record in building go-anywhere yachts, they were a perfect match for this project. With a team consisting of Novak, Castro and KMY, it wasn’t a hard choice for me to join them. We all look forward to testing Vinson in the brutal North Atlantic soon.” The Pelagic 77 Vinson of Antarctica features two carbon masts so that the sail area is distributed and all sail systems, such as winches and jib rollers, can still be operated by hand. For the rest, the superyacht is powered by twin Yanmar engines at 150 hp, with well-protected propellers, a workshop forward to allow running repairs at sea and a diesel stove in the aft saloon. The superyacht has a beam of 6.3 meters and rather minimalist décor, mostly bamboo furniture. Onboard guests can relax in the comfortable living area of the large pilothouse or the stern gallery. The superyacht can host eight guests and a crew of three. It has six double cabins and two communal toilets and showers. The vessel will be used for charter trips from Puerto Williams, as well as for private purposes.
JADE MOUNTAIN ST. LUCIA
The jaw-droppingly beautiful Jade Mountain resort on the southwestern Caribbean coastline of St. Lucia is more than just a pretty face: it’s also a cornucopia of organic architecture and eco-resilience. The property’s design reinforces its connection to the natural environment with passive ventilation of the rooms and natural daylighting;it does not use artificial cooling or lighting, in order to conserve energy resources and minimize its carbon footprint. An exterior plaza was designed to capture rainwater in koi ponds and planting areas, which is then harvested for use in the resort’s restaurants. Only indigenous plants were used in the landscaping, which minimizes the need for watering and protects a precious resource. And guests can do more than enjoy the beautiful scenery from a private infinity pool in their room with a view (which entirely lacks a fourth wall in the bid to be at one with nature): all are given the opportunity to learn about the resort’s sustainability programs and actively participate through environmental activities such as reef cleaning and tree planting.

BAWAH RESERVE On Indonesia’s Anambas archipelago, lesser known than Bali but every bit as beautiful, rests Bawah Reserve, an untapped paradise comprised of six islands, 13 beaches and three lagoons with 100 hectares of forest. Sustainability is at the core of this property, which was designed by architect Sim Boon Yang with eco-sensitivity in mind. As such, villas have been positioned around large trees;roofs are thatched with palm leaves from a neighboring island;all tented suites and public areas are made of bamboo and recycled teak;bath and shower areas are made from recycled copper;and the tables and chairs are fashioned from flotsam. The Earth-first philosophy includes solar water heating, rainwater catchment and water desalination systems, and a zero-waste program with extensive recycling, plastic-free environment and all-encompassing marine and forest conservation practices. Bawah Reserve even has its own foundation — the Anambas Foundation — which works toward marine and forest conservation. The resort also features overwater bungalows, a rare find in Indonesia and more commonly seen in the Maldives, made out of recycled wood, and this year will launch the Elang Private Residence — six sustainably minded lodges on a previously untouched island. This distinctive design vision has resulted in a resort that feels earthy and organic yet cool, decadent and pampering, too.

One of the coolest hotels slated to open in the next year packs a massive green punch. That would be Svart, the world’s first energy-positive hotel. Located in Arctic Norway at the base of the Svartisen glacier, this glass-fronted, circular structure actually floats on stilts above the Holandsfjorden fjord. It aims to be fully off grid, carbon neutral and zero waste within its first five years of operation. As created by innovative Danish designers Space Copenhagen, Svart will house an indoor-outdoor spa, four restaurants, an education center and a design laboratory, with two electric boats on the property to facilitate transfers and activities. Guests will enjoy exhilarating arctic experiences year-round, from ice climbing on the glacier to practicing yoga under the midnight sun, as well as wildlife spotting, diving and fishing.

FOGO ISLAND INN CANADA
TRAVEL
PHOTO COURTESY OF FOGO ISLAND INN
Fogo Island Inn might feel like the farthest-flung corner of the planet, and rest assured, that’s intentional. In fact, the inn, built by Norway-based architect Todd Saunders, sits on an island off an island on the Newfoundland coast, with 29 unique guest rooms and suites that showcase dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Its menu always reflects the region: the ingredients guests will find on their plates are fished, hunted, farmed and foraged right on or around the island, such as crab, scallops with parsnips and rhubarb jelly, salt cod and shaved turnip, and cured local sheep leg. The property’s architecture and operational systems ensure the highest levels of energy efficiency and resource conservation via an insulated steel frame, while rainwater from the roof is collected in two cisterns and subsequently filtered for use in toilets, laundry and kitchen appliances. And how’s this for innovative? The owner, Shorefast, a registered Canadian charity, has even developed its own Economic Nutrition notification system, a label allowing consumers to make conscious choices about how their purchases will impact the local and global economy. Truly, this is regenerative tourism at its finest.
MASHPI LODGE ECUADOR
Those seeking the ultimate sustainable stay should search out the wonders provided by Mashpi Lodge, set on some 6,000 acres of rainforest in the heart of the Chocó Bioregion of the Ecuadorian Andes. Within the protected reserve, which features rooms made with glass walls — designed to blend with the natural environment, like a luxury cocoon in the midst of the forest — dwells an amazing range of biodiversity, which is now in danger. This is why the “green hotel in the clouds” has partnered with Forest Guardians. The NGO Rainforest Connection-developed initiative leverages common technology in the service of conservation, affixing trees with inconspicuous “stations” composed of a recycled cell phone, a microphone and solar panels for continuous power to perform “bio-acoustic monitoring” for the detection of intrusive sounds of humanity (such as buzzing chainsaws) and pinpoint their location, so that rangers can stop violators in real time and protect elements like Mashpi’s Life Center, a magical structure where tayras and tropical birds come to feed.

BARDESSONO CALIFORNIA
A stay here marries luxury with living “deep green” for the most discerning of travelers. Eco-developers built Napa Valley mainstay Bardessono — one of only seven LEED Platinum Certified hotels in the United States, and one of only 28 worldwide — with 100,000 square feet of salvaged wood, found throughout on doors, floors and guest room walls, as well as in the spa, restaurant (Lucy, which uses only locally sourced ingredients picked fresh from its California Certified Organic Farming garden each day) and event space. The hotel’s carbon footprint includes the use of organic linens and cleaning supplies, which go through recycling and compost programs; usage of an underground geothermal system that heats and cools the guest rooms, spa and domestic hot water supply; 200 square feet of glass in each room, which reduces daytime lighting requirements; and automatic thermostats that reduce excess energy demands. Low water-flow fixtures, dual-flush toilets and waterless urinals are used to conserve water, while a 200-kilowatt solar energy system provides the majority of the electrical energy requirement. And you can also be the change: for each guest who opts out of housecleaning to support a more sustainable future, the property plants an herb in its onsite certified organic culinary garden.
SIX SENSES BOTANIQUE The newest hotel in the Six Senses portfolio, Six Senses Botanique, an emerald gem located just two and a half hours from São Paulo and three and a half hours from Rio de Janeiro, is also one of the most sustainable. The property, which lies at the confluence of three river valleys in the heart of the Mantiqueira Mountains (known as the “mountains that weep,” due to the abundance of springs and rivers), will appeal to guests seeking an eco-retreat in nature along with authentic Brazilian design, culture and cuisine. It is blessed with seven springs that provide guests with their own mineral water, as well as a water treatment station to return clean water back to nature; seven suites, all of which were constructed modularly, using local materials and sited to minimize their impact on the surrounding flora and fauna; farm-to-table herbs, fruits and vegetables, grown in the resort’s own organic gardens and farm and served at its Mina restaurant and Fire Side lounge; a spa that features an interactive workshop, “The Alchemist’s Body,” to teach guests about locally sourced ingredients and products; and unique Reconnection Experiences, which allow guests to get back in touch with themselves and loved ones while exploring the surrounding natural environment.

Heckfield Place, located in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, might look like something from the past, but it’s fully evolved into a locale of the future. This 250-yearold Georgian property achieved 100 percent biodynamic certification this year, making it the only hotel in the U.K. to have its onsite farm so accredited. The 438-acre hotel goes above and beyond organic to grow “preparations” (otherwise known as herbal remedies), as well as its own natural skincare products. But then, everything about Heckfield Place is aces in its bid for sustainability, including plastic-free rooms with natural materials sourced locally (like rush mats and headboards from the River Ouse); the curation of its own produce; composting its own waste; raising pigs, sheep and chickens; a biodynamic nursery; and the use of a biomass energy center for hot water and heating. Last year, Heckfield Place even opened its own micro-dairy in order to generate its own cream, butter and yogurt; its 38 Guernsey cows also provide biodynamic milk, for an exquisite cheese.
KACHI LODGE BOLIVIA
Travel to a remote corner of the world an hour’s flight from La Paz — 12,000 feet high, in search of the salar (a salt-encrusted depression that may or may not be the basin of an evaporated lake) — and you’ll find an oasis of sustainability and originality. On this immense salt flat, set on a wooden platform near a cacti-covered island, is Kachi Lodge. Founder Amazing Escapes pushes the boundaries of sustainable travel to the extreme with six cutting-edge eco-infrastructures and a fierce commitment to local culture and communities. The very creation of the resort abided by a strict environmental policy: no drilling was required; should the lodge be dismantled, one rainy season would erase all traces of its existence. To ensure perfect heating, stoves are installed in each dome: the pellets used to fuel them are made of compressed wood waste. The lodge also runs solely on solar panels that not only heat water but also charge batteries. In fact, the whole energy-efficient camp runs completely on 24V. Last but not least, using reverse osmosis, a unique closed-loop filtering system reduces water consumption, while incineration toilets transform organic material into neutral ash so that no black water treatment is needed. There’s a strict policy against plastic, as well. It might sound rustic, but know that each suite features a unique painting by Gastón Ugalde — internationally known as the Bolivian Andy Warhol — and the chef, Marsia Taha, is globally recognized as one of the best in Bolivia.
JETWING SURF SRI LANKA

Located in Pottuvil, an unspoiled stretch of beach on Sri Lanka’s east coast, Jetwing Surf utilizes a unique style of architecture that will delight the discerning eco-tourist. Each of its 20 seashell-inspired cabanas are built using wood, woven coconut palm leaves and dried illuk grass (all indigenous to Sri Lanka), and their open design reduces the need for artificial illumination and ventilation. Cadjan-covered doublelayered walls allow for the easy flow of fresh air and simultaneously provide a bonus of absolute privacy. It’s paradise for the five-star traveler who dreams of sleeping underneath palm fronds and being at one with nature — all while surfing the day away at Arugam Bay, one of the best surfing destinations in the world, just ten minutes away.
SONEVA FUSHI
THE MALDIVES If paradise was lost, it’s been found again at Soneva Fushi, on an imaginative Maldivian eco-hideaway within touching distance of a UNESCO-protected Biosphere Reserve in the Baa Atoll. Call on your Barefoot Butler, learn to free dive, or indulge in a curated private sandbank dinner — all with the magic of the Maldives as your backdrop. But there’s more to this postcard-perfect place than its indulgent perfection: sustainability is central. Soneva Namoona Baa, a partnership launched by Soneva Fushi and international NGO Common Seas in collaboration with the government of the Maldives and three local islands (Maalhos, Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo), demonstrates that a radical reimagining of waste can prevent plastic from leaking into the ocean. In fact, the property’s “waste-to-wealth” center transforms the used articles and materials at the resort into recycled treasure.

Grootbos, one of only ten Global Ecosphere Resorts in the world, is that rare luxury eco-resort that offers a little bit of everything for everyone, in an environment tucked between mountains, forest and sea. But most of all, this private reserve wants to make a positive impact on visitors. It does so through botanical and landscape conservation work (over the course of 23 years, seven new species of plants have been discovered); the formation of a Green Futures vocational college; an extensive sustainability dashboard, with roughly five years of data detailing water management and measurements; the removal of all single-use plastics and, thus, the practice of bottling of its own water; and feeding all organic waste from its kitchens to its Growing the Future farm pigs. Beyond sustainability, this South African resort offers the crème de la crème in every possible way: gorgeous suites in the midst of a milkwood forest, epicurean food and wine journeys from celebrated local vintners, and out-of-the-box experiences such as shark cage diving, botanical tours and marine safaris.

Every detail of the LEED Certified 1 Hotel South Beach, which occupies an entire city block on Collins Avenue, was designed to bring the outside in. As imagined by designers Meyer Davis, that means a plethora of reclaimed woods and locally sourced materials, such as regional coral stone and concrete trough sinks, teak vanities and handblown glass pendant lights. Every element has sustainability in mind, from in-room Nespresso coffee machines with recyclable pods, to state-of-the-art energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, to filtered water in all taps, sinks and showers. Plant the Future further creates green moments throughout the hotel that act as a living art exhibit, including living green walls on the hotel’s façade and in the main ballroom and terrariums in every guest room, and guests can choose an array of nature-inspired experiences, such as stargazing or shopping at a dedicated farmers market. There’s even a charitable component for those who like to do good — local nonprofit partners offer volunteer experiences for guests to contribute to sustaining the local environment — and one for those who like to look good, too: this haute hotel’s house car is a Tesla, and it offers complimentary rides.

CHAT WITH CZECH An exclusive, one-on-one interview with celebrity esthetician and Dior Skincare Expert Joanna Czech. BY DEYVANSHI MASRANI
GLOBALLY RENOWNED ESTHETICIAN JOANNA CZECH—WHO HAS
Haute Living: Tell me about your approach to skincare overall. JOANNA CZECH: Respect, support and protect are the tenets. I believe in a very customized approach to every person’s skin; lifestyle, [the] climate that they live in and [their] needs are different. I do not overtreat or overexfoliate. I also think it is important to reevaluate skincare routines seasonally. HL: As a Dior Skincare Expert, how does your approach to skincare align with that of Dior’s? JC: Dior and I share the same desire to empower women. When it comes to skincare, less is more, and Capture Totale is a line based on cell energy, which is something I believe is key to slowing down the aging process. And they do it with “clean science,” which is the best way, in my opinion. HL: Is there a part of the face that you often see people mistreat or care for improperly? If yes, how so, and what is the proper way to care for this/these area(s)? JC: People very often forget about the neck and the decolletage. The lipid layer is reduced 30 to 40 percent due to a smaller amount of sebaceous glands in this area. This causes [signs of] aging to appear sooner than they do on the face. While it is not necessary to use specific products, it is important to pay attention to this area and treat it like the face and the body, so it gets double treatment. HL: Let’s talk about the eyes, which are now more important than ever; since we wear masks, the eyes are one of the only parts of our face that are exposed and visible. The eyes are also one of the first parts of the face that show signs of age. What is the ideal morning and evening routine to take care of the skin around our eyes? JC: The day should always begin at night—this is when products are most effective as the skin is at rest [at this time]. Evening Routine: Remove makeup gently; do not rub or tug at the eye area ake sure that your eye care products are applied right before your final M moisturizer so that they are properly absorbed into the skin; if you put them over moisturizer, they can’t get through 64 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com/hautebeauty
If necessary, use a lukewarm eye compress Perform gentle eye area massages Morning Routine: Use draining movements around the eyes to reduce puffiness; ice cubes or cold compresses can also aid in depuffing Exercise the eye area to strengthen the muscles around the eyes Implement products that boost cell energy, like Capture Totale’s Eye Serum Take a few minutes every few hours to rest your eyes HL: When most people think about eye skincare, they tend to focus on the skin beneath the eyes. Should we be paying more attention to the skin above the eyes and next to them, as well? If yes, how so? JC: In my opinion, eye care is taking care of all the skin around your eyes—upper and lower lid, as well as the sides of your eyes. HL: What are some things we should be doing as we go about our day to protect our eyes/eye area? JC: We should be resting the eyes, replenishing moisture throughout the day with product and storing eye products in a refrigerator to create a cryotherapy effect [when used]. HL: Tell me about what makes the Dior Super Potent Eye Serum so special. JC: The triple action effect of the whole product is what makes it special. Biological: The extract of the revitalizing Iongoza plant creates a wave of energy in the skin, while the Active Rye Extract tones and firms. Accetulated low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is super hydrating, [and when] combined with glycerin, [it] creates even more plumping and smoothing effects. Mechanical: The flexible neck of the applicator makes it a very comfortable tool to use that adapts easily to all of the different eye shapes. Thermal: The head is made of Zamac, which reduces the temperature of the skin, creating a cooling effect. This feature also depuffs the eye area. HL: Who is the Dior Super Potent Eye Serum for? JC: For anyone who needs an eye treatment. You can start using this eye treatment as early as 18 years old, since the first signs of aging can show between between 16 to 18 [years old]; so, incorporating this product can help slow down the signs of aging.

Thanks to its improved accuracy and precision, it is a COSC-certified chronometer. How much do we believe in these stunning members of our new Longines Spirit Collection?
