“I THINK THIS PANDEMIC HAS GIVEN ALL OF US TIME TO RETHINK AND RESET.”
acho Figueras should, at this moment, be sleeping off his jet lag — and it would have been awesome. This isn’t to say the world’s most famous polo player particularly likes being jet-lagged, or flying in general, but it’s what he’s used to. It’s what he does. He’s gallivanted to all corners of the globe for the better part of 20 years: snowy evenings in Aspen; hot, sunny days in Australia; dinners in Dubai; chilly afternoons in England; sensational sunsets in Los Angeles. But the world has changed, and sacrifices have been made by all. Admittedly, his are lesser than most, but he’s still made them. “This moment in time is a little bit crazy, but we are still standing. We should make the best of it, right?” he says. Indeed. Here, when we spoke to him in November, was at home in General Rodríguez, Argentina, 45 minutes outside Buenos Aires, where he has, for the past two months, fallen into a comfortable daily routine with his wife of 16 years, photographer and former model Delfina Blaquier, and their brood of four: Hilario, 20; Aurora, 16; Artemo, 11; and Alba, 7. “I get to live outside the city in a place where life is not so frustrating. I get to be outside, with my horses. I’m a very lucky guy,” Figueras says. The 43-year-old BlackWatch team co-owner and captain still plays polo with his kids every day, who then homeschool while he is practicing, playing and working on his plethora of non-polo-related business ventures. The family still takes meals together. But while his day-to-day life is not so very different, his professional one has changed dramatically. Polo, like all sports, has had to pivot as a result of the pandemic. “That part of my life has changed quite a bit,” he concedes. “Obviously, the tournament side of things has been almost dormant. The Veuve Clicquot events [played in New York and Los Angeles], for example, have all been canceled. And I do miss it. I can’t wait for the whole thing to start all over again.” Figueras is now getting an adapted version of his wish this month, as he returns to Wellington, Fla., for the Palm Beach polo season. (He spent the better part of 2020 there, too, having purchased a condo in the glamorous new Coach House Wellington development, located next to the Equestrian Preserve.) Yes, he’ll be playing, but the sport is going to look vastly different: World Polo League matches have been closed to the public. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 17
Right now, he is literally getting back on the horse again (he’s booting up as we speak), but figuratively, he never got off. Nacho Figueras is not one to rest on his laurels and wait for life to happen. In fact, he used the whole of this surreal year to reevaluate and reassess his career. “I’m not the kind of guy who likes to relax too much; I’m used to always running around and doing things,” he explains. “On one hand, I miss [being in cities like] New York, playing in front of 10,000 cheering people. On the other hand, this not traveling, being grounded way of life has given me the opportunity to reinvent myself a little bit. I think this pandemic has given all of us time to rethink and reset. For me it has been refreshing in that it has made me look at things in different ways. A lot of the things I’ve done for the past 20 years are not happening now, so I’ve found myself doing other things, exploring other business alternatives.” He actually began exploring options outside polo in 2013, when he launched the Figueras Design Group, a global design consultancy firm headquartered in Buenos Aires. Upcoming projects include Guenoc Valley, a 20,000-acre development in Napa Valley with an equestrian club, polo fields, a polo club, clubhouse, pony camp, golf course and winery (FDG will be largely in charge of designing the equestrian leg of the project, as well as the homes and clubhouse), and AMAALA, an ultra-luxury destination on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Coast, of which Figueras was named an ambassador and advisory board member last January. Additionally, his focuses include Cris Yatay, his spectacular 30-acre Argentinian breeding ranch; wellness brand Flow Water, in which he is an investor and member of the board of advisers; Veuve Clicquot and NetJets, for which he is a global ambassador; and FuboTV, a streaming service with live sports and entertainment-focused content; he joined its board of directors in August. He is also working on creating his own bitter, currently slated for a spring release, as well as a collaboration with renowned Argentinian winery Catena Zapata. But first and foremost, he is preparing for the global expansion of his unisex fragrance line, the Ignacio Figueras Collection. After nearly two decades as a spokesperson for Ralph Lauren Black Label and Ralph Lauren Fragrances, Figueras was ready to branch out on his own. He enlisted Moroccan master perfumer Carlos Benaim, who has worked 18 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
with brands such as Frederic Malle, Prada and Calvin Klein, to create six signature scents, which officially launched at Bergdorf Goodman and Harrods in December 2019. It’s a passion project, which is why every single thing about the scents, from their horseshoe-shaped packaging to their names — Buenos Aires, Aspen, Palm Beach, Jaipur, Dubai and Windsor — was crafted to tell his personal story. “I had three pillars for what I wanted this [collection] to be about,” Figueras explains. “One was my family and how we travel around the world playing polo, which is what I love. The second was the places where we spend time as a family, which inspired the names of the fragrances. The third is philanthropy: proceeds from [all sales] go to Sentebale, Prince Harry’s charity, to help children in Africa.” The Ignacio Figueras Collection was his clear and dedicated focus prior to the spring 2020 quarantines, but alas, the lockdowns also deaccelerated sales. “Obviously, Covid has complicated things. Traffic has been slow, though the fragrances themselves have gotten a lot of traction and good reviews. But I don’t mind slow; I think slow gave us a new way to really think about things. [As a result], we’re now working on a new e-commerce, direct-toconsumer strategy.” One thing he has never needed to think about was the direction he wanted to take his brand — the fragrances, but his overall personal brand, too. The most telling part is that the fragrances are being sold using his given name, not his nickname. In his eyes, there is a marked distinction. “I believe [using Ignacio] was kind of like [segueing into the] next stage of my life. Ignacio is the name my parents gave me. I think it looks a little more elegant and separates my new line from my previous 20 years with Ralph Lauren Fragrances. That was an honor and an incredible journey, but we wanted to tell our own story.” For the record, his story will always include polo: contrary to previous statements that he’d likely retire at the age of 45, he’s arrived at 43, and Figueras, who has been playing since he was 9 and turned pro at 17, is not ready to put down his mallet. “I still feel good and young,” he declares. “Forty-five is around the corner, but I think I have a few more years in me. I still have a lot to give.”
igueras is often referred to as the “David Beckham of polo.” We totally get the comparison. Both men are world-famous athletes, strategic businessmen and fathers of four. Neither is particularly hard on the eyes, either. (Just saying.) Of his similarities to the international soccer star, Figueras says, “To me, the comparison is a compliment, because I see [Beckham] as a very successful, down-to-earth family man. I wouldn’t refer to myself that way, but I do see where it comes from, and it’s an honor. I’ve met him a few times, and he’s a great guy, an accomplished sportsman, and in the next stage of his life, a very successful businessman. Of course, I don’t consider myself to be anywhere near as successful as he is, but he’s a good person to aspire to.” We respectfully disagree: Not only is Figueras successful, but he’s also an easygoing, down-to-earth person, and just plain good. It’s rare to meet a star so truly humble. When we express this very sentiment, he says pragmatically, “I mean, I don’t know any other way to go about life. I don’t believe I’ve done anything that allows me to be any different. I don’t think I have the right to not be down-to-earth.” This is certainly what drew him to close friend Prince Harry, who is also spectacularly unaffected. That, and polo, of course. The two were meant to play in a Covid-canceled charity tournament in the States last summer for Sentebale, the nonprofit Harry founded with Prince Seeiso, Principal Chief of Matsieng of the Basotho Royal Family, in 2006; it offers support to children with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. Figueras, who is an ambassador for the organization, says they are currently preparing to do live charity events as soon as the world is safe enough. “We’ve been communicating mostly by phone and video conference. I have not seen him [because of the pandemic], but we speak a lot. He’s in America, and he’s very happy,” says Figueras, who was supportive of the prince’s decision to move his family — wife Meghan Markle and son Archie — to the U.S. “My situation is very different to his, but of course I would do anything in my power to protect my family and my children. If I had to protect them with my life, I would. I think that’s what he’s doing. He’s putting his wife and his child first, and he believes that what he’s doing should be done. I respect that very much.”
Figueras gets it, because his own kids are everything and seemingly always have been, given that he was a young dad. His firstborn, Hilario, arrived when Figueras was just 22. “I’ve been a father for 20 years now, and I could not think of my life in any other way. When you have children, something happens inside you, where you are not the most important thing anymore; you come second. It’s been like that for me for a very long time, and I love it.” And obviously, his kids love him. More tellingly, they actually like him (though how could you not, really?). In particular, any parent of a teenage girl knows this is no mean feat. He says of his relationship with his 16-year-old daughter, “Aurora and I have bonded a lot lately because she is very hands-on with most of the projects I’m working on.” Not only does she know about breeding, but she also helped (as did his wife, Delfina) in the development of his fragrance line. It was a big responsibility, but one that he was always confident she could handle. It’s no wonder he proudly vows that all his future business ventures will bear his last name. Together, they are stronger than they are apart. The Figueras family is also supremely fortunate. He knows this and does not take it for granted; nor will his kids. “I try to teach them that saying please and thank you are the most important things in life, to say them every day, as I do. I teach them to be grateful, to be kind, to work hard. There’s a great phrase from Cinderella, which is, ‘Have courage and be kind,’” he says. “I truly believe that.” They’re words to live by, and ones the world at large needs to hear. So he’ll give us a few more, the gist of which is this: there is always, always, always a silver lining — even when it’s impossible to see. Though 2020 was traumatic, there is an end in sight; through darkness comes light. “I can’t wait for the world to go back to as normal as possible, but I’m grateful to have been given the chance to reconnect with family and friends, [because] spending time with my family is the biggest luxury,” he says. “And I think that when we look back at this time a few years from now, we’ll be able to see the positive. Yes, things have been tough, but life is beautiful…and we all deserve to live an amazing life.” @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 21

hospitality and will continue to do so for the industry at large,” said Gene Prescott, Chairman & owner of the Biltmore Hotel. “We are honored to celebrate our rich history and simultaneously look forward to a brighter future.” In the spring of 2020, The Biltmore was forced to close its doors along with all other hotels in the industry due to Covid-19. It has since reopened (following all mandatory health protocols) and recently completed a $35 million renovation to the entire property. This renovation updated many areas, including the accommodations, meeting spaces, fitness center, and an 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course. The Biltmore made sure to keep all of the Mediteranneaninspired styles it is known for, however, just with a few more updated features for the guests in this next century to come. Haute MCLAREN IS KNOWN FOR ITS SPEED AND ITS
extremely sleek design. The British marque has debuted an exclusive new McLaren Special Operations (MSO) bespoke-commission hypercar, the McLaren Sabre, exclusively for the U.S. market. The Sabre is limited to 15 units, and their owners have actively participated in their design and development in a co-creative project with the engineers and designers. Every car is tailored to the specifications and requirements of its owner. Each owner was flown to the U.K. to visit the design studio and discuss their preferences and have a test drive at the Thermal Club Private Race Club. “We were extremely pleased with how the opening event went and were honored to support such an integral part of the customer journey for the Sabre,” said O’Gara Motorsport director Parris Mullins. “And today we are thrilled to hand over
the first McLaren Sabre to its new owner – this time not just a client, more a customer who has been in part collaborator, designer and factory test driver as their dream came to reality.” The car is essentially the bespoke offspring of the iconic 250-mph McLaren Speedtail and McLaren Senna, with exaggerated speed and aerodynamics. Some features include Le Mans-style fin, giant rear diffuser, front splitter and distinctive threeslat wing. The striking McLaren butterfly doors complete the look of the two-seater. While McLaren hasn’t revealed full technical details, the Sabre uses the company’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, putting down 824 bhp and 800 Nm of peak torque – 35 bhp more than Senna. The top speed reaches 218 mph (352 km/h), making it McLaren’s fastest non-hybrid two-seater car yet. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have been involved with a number of very special cars, and I’ve never seen a manufacturer give clients the level of access that McLaren Special Operations has provided for the Sabre,” said Mullins. The first customer’s car is a sleek yet bold combination of red, white and black livery. The other 14 are personalized according to their owners. No price has been announced.

MERCEDES-BENZ DOES NOT MANUFACTURE MANY
GT Black Series models, but when it does, the result is phenomenal. The sixth AMG GT Black Series has been named the fastest production car around famous German track Nordschleife Nurburgring. The fully loaded speedster was driven by GT3 driver Maro Engel, who completed the truncated 20.6- km lap in 6:43 minutes without the T13 straight. “With speeds of up to almost 270 km/h in the Kesselchen section of the track, or well over 300 km/h on the long Döttinger Höhe straight, the AMG GT Black Series is significantly faster than my GT3 race car,” Engel said. “To finally drive around the Nordschleife in 6:48.047 minutes with a production road car in these track conditions is really awesome. Like my GT3 race car, the AMG GT Black Series offers a lot of adjustment possibilities, all of which enabled me to create a setup that was tailor-made for me.” The lap set beats the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ by
1.3 seconds, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS by 4 seconds and the Porsche 918 Spyder by 13 seconds. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series is powered by the most powerful AMG engine – a 4.0-litre V8 engine that puts out 720 bhp and 800 Nm of peak torque. The sports car can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and attains a top speed of 325 km/h. Along with a powerful heart, the AMG GT Black Series is also equipped with front splitter, twin-blade rear spoiler, and a coil-over suspension that can be lowered by 5 mm at the front and 3mm at the rear. The Series also uses impressive aerodynamics, thanks to the seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. It uses the new carbon-fibre bonnet for cooling, with two large exhaust outlets with black-finished carbon surfaces guiding the warm air from the diagonally positioned cooling pack. The German automaker has unveiled the price to be $325,000 plus destination taxes; that is about three times the price of the standard AMG GT. This speedster is set for sale this year.

elite living in every way possible. Gulf Craft’s Majesty 175 is a superyacht that could open a new era in the yachting industry. The custom 54m yacht is also the largest flagship yacht from the UAE shipyard. Currently under construction, Majesty 175 will be delivered to a prominent Emirati businessman. By just three feet, it replaces the U.S.-based Westport 172 as the largest fiberglass superyacht. Launched at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show, the Majesty 175, designed by Cristiano Gatto Design in Italy, is a marriage of modern luxury and conscious thinking. The superyacht uses composite materials. The use of fiberglass decreases the overall weight and enhances fuel consumption and maintenance without compromising quality. “This is a very special day in the history of Gulf Craft,” said Gulf Craft chairman Mohammed Hussein Alshaali in a statement. “I’m proud of everyone who contributed to this magnificent jewel and to launching it as the largest composite production megayacht in the world. This project took four years of hard work and dedication from the entire team to manufacture. I believe that with building the Majesty 175, we have set a new trend in the market that many shipyards in the world will follow.” The Majesty 175 utilizes space efficiently, with the owner ’s private suite situated on the upper deck and other seven cabins (which can host up to 14 guests) located on the main deck. The main deck also features a swimming pool, beach club and gym. A hybrid sky lounge can be converted to an open sundeck. Enlarged windows will allow guests close proximity to the sea and nature. The yacht borrows its hull from its predecessor, the Majesty 155, which is extremely efficient despite its size. The Majesty 175 has a trans-Atlantic capability and is powered by twin MTU 2,012hp engines. The approximately 500 GT vessel has a range over 4,000nm and houses a state-of-the-art navigation system, along with a range of the latest security controls. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 43

After being activated, Safe Return takes control of the plane and transports it to the nearest airport, communicating with Air Traffic Control (ATC) all the while, then safely lands and comes to a stop. “Our mission is to make personal aviation more accessible by continuing to improve passenger comfort and safety,” says Zean Nielsen, CEO of Cirrus Aircraft. “Safe Return delivers the next step toward autonomous flight, bringing a new level of confidence to the overall flying experience by providing the ultimate level of safety and control to passengers. Together, with the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System® (CAPS®), we have once again set a new standard for safety in personal air travel.” CAPS® is the first FAA-certified whole-airframe parachute safety system, included as standard equipment on an aircraft. Using Perspective Touch+™ by Garmin® flight deck, Safe Return analyzes the plane’s data, including available fuel as well as terrain and surrounding weather, to determine the closest and safest airport available, simultaneously communicating with ATC. Autothrottle, which was launched on the new G2 Vision Jet in 2019, works with the flight control 44 HAUTE LIVING hauteyachts.com

The system communicates the aircraft’s intentions over the appropriate ATC frequency, the 121.5 emergency voice frequency, and also switches to the universal emergency transponder code. ATC is automatically updated at regular intervals of the aircraft’s location, emergency situation and intended airport landing location. These communications begin the process of activating emergency services at the airport to assist the passengers and pilot upon arrival. Safe Return can be easily turned off by pressing the autopilot disconnect button. The Vision Jet was introduced in 2016 as the first single-engine personal jet to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. +Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe Talking about Maradona, new models and the state of the industry. BY MARTIN GREEN
AT THE END OF ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL LVMH WATCH WEEK,
we had the opportunity to sit down (virtually) with Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe. We talked about the latest watches from the brand, how the pandemic is affecting the watch industry, and the passing of his good friend, football idol Diego Maradona.
HT: So it’s basically the art of fusion, but then in a fair? RG: Exactly. We try always to be innovative, creative, different and unique in everything that we do. HT: 2020 was a very turbulent year. How did it go for Hublot? RG: It was a very difficult year for Hublot, as it was for most of the industry. First of all, our offices were closed for months to protect our employees. Our boutiques and our multi-brand partners have also been closed. At a certain point, this was at 80 percent. So, I would say that the impact has been at least three to four months where the sales have been down heavily because we are not even able to produce watches. This makes it, of course, difficult to achieve good numbers. Our sales have been down, but we have been saved, at least a bit, because the last quarter of 2020 was quite good. The manufacturer started operating at 100 percent again in September, and October, November and December were quite good. HT: Hublot is an innovative brand, with many new watches launched each year. Did the closure also affect your research and development for new models? RG: Yes, a little bit, of course, because we had several months during which we couldn’t advance in these projects. One thing that we learned from the pandemic is that many people can work from home, but with research and development, we need to do physical tests, so that was difficult. But even so, I would say we were able to present some quite important novelties this week. We are showing that we are investing in our research and development and were able to release quite a series of new products. 46 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com
HT: Last year was also, sadly, the passing of Diego Maradona, who was passionate about Hublot. What is your fondest memory of him? RG: Yes, I was really sad to learn he passed away. In another interview this morning I was asked about the greatest moment was during the years I’ve been with Hublot, and I mentioned meeting Diego for the first time in Russia in 2010. You know I am a fan of football, and my idol in football is more Maradona than Pele, even though Pele is an incredible player. But I couldn’t see him play live, and with Maradona, I was in front of my TV when he became the world champion in 1986. We built a friendship, and I met him again several times. I remember in Paris, in 2016, when we did a game of football and brought Pele and Maradona together, which was incredible. It is very sad that Maradona passed away. It was too early. HT: Hublot celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2020. What factors have played an essential role in giving the brand its staying power? RG: We can divide the past 40 years into two periods. There is the foundation of Hublot in 1980 and the 24 years that followed. It started with one watch, the classic Hublot in 18-karat yellow gold with a strap made of rubber. It was an incredible success, in Spain in particular. When I arrived with Jean-Claude Biver in 2004, Spain represented almost two-thirds of the business, which is not typical, because Spain, I would say, is the 9th or 10th market in the watch industry. Here starts the second period, which we can call the revolution of the brand. Mr. Biver had the incredible idea to create this concept of the art of fusion, which has changed everything for Hublot. The result was the Big Bang, which represented a total repositioning of the brand. When we launched the Big Bang in 2005, we immediately felt that something was happening. In 2008 we were acquired by LVMH; Bernard Arnault recognized the potential of Hublot. Since then, we have had double-digit growth almost every year.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF HUBLOT
HAUTE TIME: How did LVMH Watch Week 2021 go for Hublot, considering it’s all virtual? Ricardo Guadalupe: I think very well. We’ve set up some very nice video studios where we have tried to bring a bit more content. We can show you the new watches in detail, so I think the retailers and the press are quite impressed. On one side, it’s a pity that we’re not physically together, but on the other side we have brought, we would say, a new approach with these video conferences.
Hublot Big Bang Integral Blue Ceramic HT: You also continue to expand Hublot’s range of manufacture movements, with the fantastic automatic tourbillon movement. How important are manufacture movements for the brand and its clients? RG: Back in 2005, our ambition was to become a reference brand in the Swiss watch industry, and to be able to become a reference brand, you must have your own manufacture, with your own movements. We completed our first in 2009 and launched it in 2010. We are working with two pillars, which are creating new materials, colored ceramics and sapphires, carbon fiber, magic gold, and new movements. These new calibers are always more difficult because it takes a minimum of five years to develop and produce them. The movement is a key element in Hublot being a reference brand, and to assure also our customers that when they are buying a Hublot watch it has a lot of value. HT: You introduced many new models at LVMH Watch Week. Which of the took the most effort to create, and why? RG: I think the model of the week is the Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Orange Sapphire, because it’s a piece that demonstrates who we are. We are a real integrated manufacture, where we can develop new materials and new movements, like a tourbillon with a micro-rotor. It is really important for us to demonstrate this know-how. From a commercial point of view, the Big Bang Integral is, of course, also very important. Watches on a bracelet have a significant market share, which is why we decided to launch the watch last year in Dubai. This year we are really focusing on the ceramic, because we must always bring the art of fusion and we are specialists in ceramic. I think the Big Bang Integral in blue ceramic is really fantastic. The gray and the white ceramic are also a key product for us. We believe that this Big Bang Integral will be one of the pillars of the collection. HT: What is your outlook for 2021, for the industry as a whole and Hublot especially? RG: I am much more positive about 2021, because I think we are going to see a good and big rebound. We believe the travel retail will not come back, especially in Europe, but Hublot has many countries with a strong local clientele, which will drive our growth. China is one of them; last year we achieved a very strong double-digit growth there, and it will probably continue this year. Also, in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where we have a strong local team, we expect to grow even further. Japan is also a very important market for us, as is the U.S. We are doing quite well there. But we believe there is still space to grow with the American customers.

+2021 LVMH Watch Week Hublot, Zenith and Bulgari are bringing the heat. BY MARTIN GREEN
ALTHOUGH IT WAS COMPLETELY VIRTUAL, THIS YEAR’S
BULGARI OCTO ROMA CARILLON TOURBILLON With the new Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon, Bulgari shows once more that it can harmoniously combine great aesthetics with technically advanced movement. The watch is literally designed to amplify the sound of its minute repeater. That is also why Bulgari opted for a titanium case with an intricate groove pattern. As its name indicates, the watch is fitted with a carillon, which means that when the minute repeater is activated, the watch chimes the time with three tones instead of the more common and less complex two. HUBLOT SPIRIT OF BIG BANG TOURBILLON 5-DAY POWER RESERVE CARBON WHITE Launched seven years ago, the Spirit of Big Bang has become one of the pillars of the Hublot collection. With its characteristic tonneau shape case, it offers a different appeal than the original Big Bang, yet with the same strong DNA. The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve Carbon White is no exception. For this watch, Hublot went high-tech, crafting its case from carbon fiber with white composite inclusions. It gives the watch an urban, stealth-like look that matches perfectly with the highly complex movement. This manufacture caliber has been skeletonized in a modern way and features a tourbillon. The distinctly off-center architecture gives the watch added appeal, while a generous 5-day power reserve underscores its technical superiority. 48 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com

BULGARI OCTO FINISSIMO S CHRONOGRAPH GMT For decades, ultra-thin watches had an air of being fragile and delicate, something to wear on special occasions, not when enjoying an active lifestyle. Bulgari continues to change our perception with the Octo Finissimo S Chronograph GMT. While its steel case is only 8.75mm thick, Bulgari fit in its caliber BVL 318 automatic movement, which offers not only a chronograph but also a GMT complication. The brand even managed to give the watch a water resistance of 100 meters, which makes it not only capable of joining you during sportive activities but practically begs that you do. The 43mm large case and matching bracelet feature a beautiful combination of brushed and polished surfaces. The dial combines a velvet-looking blue with white subdials and blue details, giving the watch charisma with a casual feel. ZENITH CHRONOMASTER SPORT With the Chronomaster Sport, Zenith introduced a new generation of El Primero-powered sports watches. Thanks to its new movement, caliber 3600 is the chronograph capable of measuring ten seconds with every full rotation, with 1/10th of a second precision. Zenith frames this unique feature with a polished black ceramic bezel, which complements the version with the black dial and adds contrast to the whitedialed edition. The subdials are a nod to the first El Primero from 1969, all with a different color and slightly overlapping. Pump-style pushers add even more dynamics to the design, while a 60-hour power reserve and water resistance of up to 10ATM/100 meters are further testimony that we are dealing with a very modern chronograph. @hautetime HAUTE LIVING 49

CEO Julien Tornare Zenith joins forces with Aaron Rodgers. BY MARTIN GREEN
THE ONGOING PANDEMIC FORCED LVMH TO CHANGE THE
format of its highly successful LVMH Watch Week from a live event to a digital one in 2021. Haute Time talked with Zenith CEO Julien Tornare about how the pandemic impacted business, teaming up with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and, of course, the new watches the brand is launching.
HT: How did your role as CEO change while steering Zenith through the pandemic? JT: Going from traveling in all the markets to staying at home, is not so easy, especially for a CEO like me. I come from the markets, and I know it is essential to be in touch with them. I have adapted to being in touch with colleagues at our headquarters and in the markets on a regular basis, always being positive and in touch with employees who needed support during a time like this. HT: How did Zenith connect with Aaron Rodgers? JT: Aaron Rodgers is the newest addition to the Zenith Family. We are so proud to announce him as our USA Ambassador. We share common values, and he truly embodies our philosophy of Time to Reach Your Star. He is the number one quarterback in the NFL, has set many records, has been named the Most Valuable Player in the NFL, and led the Green Bay Packers to victory in Superbowl XLV. He continues to challenge himself to be the best and play at the highest levels of the game. HT: How important are such partnerships for a brand like Zenith, and what can we expect from it? JT: Partnerships like the one with Aaron are very important 50 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com
for us. It’s essential that we collaborate with people who share the same vision and values. Like with the Dreamhers, such as dancer Precious Adams, chef Amandine Chaignot, gymnast Airi Hatakeyama, or Sheila Sim from Singapore, Zenith is building a family of like-minded people who never stop chasing their dreams. In particular, Aaron’s support and partnership are essential for us. The U.S. is a key market for Zenith, where we need to increase our visibility. Aaron is the perfect ambassador to represent us. Very exciting projects are on the way for 2021 with Aaron, so stay tuned! HT: Zenith introduced some great new watches during the virtual LVMH Watch Week. Which is your personal favorite? JT: My favorite is the Chronomaster Sport. I am so proud that Zenith launched this piece. We have been working on it for quite a few years, and we are confident that this watch will contribute to Zenith’s success and visibility this year and in the future. This watch combines so many characteristics and codes that were present in watches from 1969 to the present day. From the threecolored counters to the deep black and ceramic bezel and the dot markers, to being able to display and read the 10th of a second: extreme precision. Activating the chrono is so much fun. It’s exciting every time! HT: What do you expect 2021 will be like for Zenith? JT: This upcoming year will be a dynamic year for Zenith, where we keep growing digitally, sustaining what we started in 2020. Product wise, it is the year of Chronomaster. We have many exciting launches planned, with a particularly thrilling one in April in the Defy line. Defy and Chronomaster are the two collections of focus for Zenith this year.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF ZENITH
Haute Time: 2020 was a year unlike any other. How did Zenith do? Julien Tornare: 2020 was a challenging year for the industry as a whole, and for Zenith as well. It was a year of digitalization; we made the most of the situation by staying in contact with our friends, the press, and retailers all around the world. We launched Zenith on Air and continued with Dreamhers on Air, which celebrates women in so many fields and supports our philosophy Time to Reach Your Star. We also launched our e-commerce in Europe and the U.S. We took a very active and digital approach in 2020. This will definitely continue.

OR OPERATING ROOM? Haute Beauty sat down with Dr. Salomon to learn more about how he uses his artistic eye and passion for art to create true masterpieces of the human face. BY MARISSA GONZALES
reconstructive surgeon Jhonny Salomon, M.D., studies his patients extensively by looking at photographs from previous years to determine exactly how they have aged. He then combines that scrutiny with his knowledge and expertise of the human face and body to develop a customized plan for each person. “The surgical process begins as medicine and then slowly becomes an art,” he says. Haute Beauty: How long have you been performing facial surgery, and how have you perfected your craft over the years? Dr. Jhonny Salomon: I’ve been in private practice for 21 years, in addition to my years in training. I have perfected the craft of facial surgery by being very self-critical and performing to the ultimate detail. Combining these traits with my artistic sense of perfection has contributed to the evolution of my skills as a plastic surgeon. In addition to my plastic surgery training, I completed a craniofacial fellowship that allowed me to understand the anatomy of the face and neck at an advanced level. Craniofacial surgery includes traumatic and congenital surgery that incorporates both the head and the neck. That initiated my interest and helped me refine my aesthetic approach in this area. HB: Talk about your passion for art, how it relates to surgery, and the journey fusing the two together. DS: Surgery and art have long been parallel in my life. Over the years, I have continued to perfect my skills as a surgeon, photographer and sculptor. My interest in the arts has given me a more critical eye and a process for visualization that have made me a better surgeon as well as a better artist. HB: What is your approach to facelifts and rhinoplasties, and why do you think you have gained such notoriety as a surgeon in this area? DS: I approach every surgery, and in particular those of the face, from 60 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com/hautebeauty
a deep artistic “gestalt.” I visualize, in combination with the patient, the final result before proceeding to the surgery. The only additional process left then is to put the anatomic structures together and find the best sequence to achieve the result. This approach, as well as striving for perfection in the details, has helped me deliver happy results for countless patients over the years, and that has built my reputation. HB: Talk about your state-of-the-art facility and the emphasis on the patient experience from beginning to end. DS: We have taken a “hospitality”-based approach to the overall patient experience and try offer 5-star service. We have a very detailed pre-op process and intake to ensure that all the details of the operation are in place prior to the actual procedure. During the recovery process, we offer lymphatic drainage massages and special treatments designed to remove swelling and bruising that make the post-operative experience much more enjoyable. I believe that the hospitality approach helps us really pay attention to all the steps and processes of the experience. Our operating-room facility is certified by the AAAASF [the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities] and the state of Florida, and we have board-certified anesthesiologists on staff. Patient safety and satisfaction are our number one goal. We continually evaluate new and improved technologies that can be incorporated to improve the overall safety of our facility and provide patients with the best treatments available in cosmetic surgery. HB: How long does it take to recover from facial surgery, and how important is this period to ensure the best results? DS: Each patient and surgery require a different post-operative recovery time and approach. For example, a young patient with a low

probability of bruising from a rhinoplasty may be able to go back to their day-to-day after five days, as soon as their splint is removed. But a patient who has a full facial rejuvenation, including the eyes and the forehead in addition to the face and neck, could take seven to ten days to go back to their day-to-day. For many patients, we include both arnica cream and pills as part of recovery if they have any bruising. Additionally, before the surgery, we usually give bromelain, vitamin C, and zinc. I advise my patients not to smoke and not be around any smokers two weeks before and two weeks after their surgery in order to facilitate the process. Additionally, I ask them to stay away from alcohol and salt for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery. HB: What is the patient’s responsibility during recovery in order to heal successfully? DS: The patient is an integral part of the process of healing – and their healing is mainly internal. Anything that increases oxygenation or decreases swelling and inflammation is advantageous to faster healing. As I mentioned, avoiding smoking, and minimal alcohol and salt usage, is very important in the pre-operative and post-operative processes. Also, being active and exercising before surgery to increase blood flow, and staying hydrated as much as possible, will improve their recovery as well. Finally, the first night after surgery, and sometimes for up to three nights, we also recommend icing and head elevation, because this too helps patients recover much more quickly.

The Maercks Institute Introduces NEW
skincare LINE BY ALANA GARCIA
R IAN A. MAER C K S , M. D. , P. A . , I S A LEA DI N G A E S T H E T IC,
Haute Beauty: Where did your interest in skincare begin? Dr. Maercks: I have always been interested in skincare. It plays a vital role in aesthetic beauty, anti-aging, and an overall youthful appearance. The Maercks Institute is all about natural-appearing results, and a skincare regimen is a great way to complement our treatments, such as aesthetic facial balancing, Botox and laser. Thoughtful skincare is the foundation that helps my patients get the most out of their filler interventions. HB: What was creating this new skincare line like? DM: The process was simple and exciting because we knew exactly what our patients needed. We created a line that would fit well into their lifestyle and aesthetic goals.
cells provides noticeable improvement of the skin’s tone and texture. Natural ingredients glycerin, rosehip seed oil, and seaweed extract provide additional moisturization, antioxidant, anti-aging and skinsoothing benefits. 0.5% Encapsulated Retinol: Touted as a miracle in modern skincare, retinol is known for its ability to renew and refresh. Here it’s encapsulated in a phospholipid layer for steady time release and is emulsified in a velvety cream. This product smooths the skin’s texture, diminishes the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles, and improves uneven skin tone.
HB: What kinds of products and ingredients did you use, and what kinds of issues do they work to correct? DM: We always recommend starting with the essentials: our cleanser, retinol, pigment suppressor, antioxidant and sunscreen.
4- Hexylresorcinol Lightening Gel: This gel minimizes photosensitivity and is non-cytotoxic. It can be used long-term without the need to cycle off. It pairs nicely with vitamin C products such as Mega CBE and Ferulic Super Serum for brightening protection and firming. It also provides antioxidant and skin protective benefits, moisturizes and regenerates skin, reduces the appearance of dark spots and aging skin, and improves skin tone and firmness.
10% AHA Exfoliating Cleanser: Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha hydroxy acid, with an excellent ability to penetrate skin pores. This makes it the perfect ingredient to remove excess oil, a common culprit for problematic skin. With a safe concentration of 10%, glycolic acid’s exfoliating action helps remove dead cells from the epidermal layer without irritation or damage. It also helps the body to naturally produce new cells, to help rebuild a smoother and younger-looking complexion. Removal of excess oil and dead skin
Mega C B E & Ferulic: This vitamin C, B, E and ferulic serum is a comprehensive antioxidant super-serum that takes advantage of each of the unique antioxidant delivery methods and chemical interactions to provide additional hydration and help even skin tone. The scientific compatibility and enhancement that these selected ingredients provide help combat oxidative stress levels on multiple levels for a deeper, more satisfying antioxidant treatment than any one ingredient on its own.

craniofacial and reconstructive plastic surgeon in Miami. His private practice, the Maercks Institute, is located in the beautiful Design District neighborhood and is fully equipped with an AAAHCqualified operating room. Dr. Maercks has spoken on many panels and given numerous lectures, domestically and internationally, regarding his unique breast augmentation procedure, which has brought in patients from all over the world. Haute Beauty sat down with Dr. Maercks to discuss his new skincare line.
Stay Ageless Tinted Mineral Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30: This hydrating liquid moisturizer with SPF will leave skin feeling quenched, smooth and radiant. It features a blend of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, white horehound extract and knotgrass extract to provide broad spectrum coverage, an anti-pollution shield, and support against infrared aging. Combining these core products with our toner, serums, and exfoliators will really round out your skincare regimen: Hydrating Skin Toner with CoQ10: Hyaluronic acid, powerful plant extracts and CoQ10 work to replenish and hydrate skin while combating free radical damage. Aloe and vitamin-rich cucumber help to nourish and soothe, providing a refreshing cooling effect. 100% Hyaluronic Quenching Serum: Hyaluronic acid is nature’s moisturizer. It occurs naturally in the body and in abundance when you are younger, but the quantity of hyaluronic acid in our body decreases as we age. This product offers a youthful plumping effect and smoother skin, reinforces the extracellular matrix and restores barrier function, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Ceramide 3 Lipid: If you suffer from dry and cracked skin or an aged appearance, it may be that the quantity of essential lipids in your skin’s outer layer is not balanced enough to adequately retain healthy moisture content. This product hydrates and soothes dry, weathered, or irritated skin, restores moisture balance, allows the body to lock in lipids lost to aging, the elements and daily activity, and provides a barrier on the outer layer of the skin to retain moisture more efficiently. Age Expression Eliminator: This remarkable product is carefully formulated with a composite blend of five peptides in a gel base that help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. Microdermabrasion Exfoliating Scrub: To protect you from the elements, your skin cells undergo a natural process called cornification, during which they migrate to the outermost surface of the epidermal layer, die and fill with keratin (touch bundles of protein fiber). This creates the resilient epidermal barrier of the skin. This product offers exceptional exfoliations, gently lifts dead skincell buildup and excess oils, helps reduce uneven tone and textures, exposes vibrant new skin for a smoother feel, and even enables better penetration of skincare products and flawless makeup application. G-S 5/2 Exfoliating Pads: These pre-soaked pads contain glycolic and salicylic acids. Glycolic acid has an excellent ability to penetrate pores, which makes it perfect for removing excess oil. Glycolic acid’s exfoliating action helps removes dead cells from the epidermal layer, helping to improve skin tone and texture and creating a smoother and youngerlooking complexion. This product also helps reduce the appearance of pore size, blackheads and breakouts, as well as fine lines. HB: What product are you most excited about? DM: Our tinted mineral sunscreen. It moisturizes and shields skin from harmful pollutants and infrared rays from the sun that cause aging. This mineral defense is your protection against photoaging, while emollients and powerful peptides work to support youthful radiance. The subtle tint and light feel make it an everyday pleasure to use. HB: Where can people purchase your products? DM: The Maercks Institute is at 4500 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami, or they can call us at 305-328-8256. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 63

There were dozens of ways John David Washington envisioned 2020 playing out, yet strangely, getting up close and personal with Zendaya during a global pandemic was not one of them. But then, his life has never really gone according to plan. Last year was meant to be his year. It certainly started off with excitement, a hum of anticipation just beneath his skin. Christopher Nolan had tapped him for the film Tenet, hot on the heels of his star-making turn in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Hollywood was about to become his oyster. What could go wrong? Famous last words. Instead of offering its stars the chance to saunter down multiple red carpets as the toast of Tinseltown, Tenet — easily the most anticipated movie of the year — was delayed three times. When it did hit theaters, in August, it was with caution tape, a statement from parent company Warner Bros. that it was not being treated like a traditional global day-and-date release. Washington was understandably crushed. “I had this whole idea that I’d be selling a Christopher Nolan movie all across the world and just getting welcomed with roses by everybody. Obviously, that shifted because of [the pandemic]. So at this point, I’m like, ‘Will I ever get to do this again?’” the 36-year-old actor recalls during our Zoom call in early January. It didn’t help that, having fled his Brooklyn pad, he was currently camped out in his childhood bedroom back in L.A., despairingly sandwiched in between the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and G.I. Joe figurines of his youth. The loss felt on par with the moment he ruptured his Achilles tendon in 2013, abruptly bringing an end to his six-year pro football career; he was drafted by the NFL’s St. Louis Rams (now the L.A. Rams) in 2006 and, in 2009, signed to the United Football League’s California Redwoods (later the Sacaramento Mountain Lions). “I’m not very good at patience,” he says. “I have this sort of ticking clock in my head. Maybe that’s due to football, seeing that nothing is guaranteed. Maybe I’m shell-shocked from some of those experiences, like getting cut or working so hard to get your opportunity and it never comes. And I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m finally getting opportunities that I’ve been dreaming of my whole life, and this happens. Oh, man. This is not good. I’m done for.’” But there was more: the fear and uncertainty that many of us felt, a
despondency about the future. Washington wasn’t immune; he felt it, too. “I was thinking about my family in North Carolina, thinking about my family in New York and how many people were affected by this — their lives, their livelihoods, their jobs,” he says. “It was spiraling into, you know, that D word, which I won’t even say. I literally left New York thinking, ‘Well, this is I Am Legend about to happen. The zombie apocalypse is upon us. It’s over.’” At first he planned on riding it out in New York. “I was going to hunker down. I thought, ‘This will last a month.’ I bought a whole bunch of chicken, was going to freeze it, like, ‘We’ll be good, we’ll be back to normal.’ And then my agent, god bless him, talked to me for two hours, telling me to get out of there. And I wanted to be with my mother, my siblings, the people I love the most. So I fled to Los Angeles in March, and I’ve been here ever since.” And although he spent two and a half months living in his parents’ house, there was a silver lining. Had he not been in L.A., he might never have received the call that changed his perspective, career and, essentially, the future course of filmmaking. Through the grapevine, he heard that Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, whom he had first met at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival while promoting Monsters and Men, was about to be blowing up his phone to discuss an ambitious new project. Needless to say, he was more than ready to make something — anything — happen. “I got wind that Sam was going to reach out to me. I was like, ‘I’m in.’ It really didn’t matter what he asked me to do. I wanted to work again. That there was an opportunity to maybe actually do a job was crazy. And it’s Sam Levinson, whom I’ve been a fan of [since his 2018 film Assassination Nation].” It might not have taken much sweet-talking to reel him in, but Washington swears he would have signed on the dotted line solely based on the strength of the script and ambition of the project. Levinson laid it out, reading both roles in the two-part Malcolm & Marie, a dialogue-driven black-and-white indie drama about a romantic reckoning between a filmmaker and his girlfriend (played by Zendaya) after they return home from his movie premiere. It debuts on Netflix February 5. “I thought, ‘This is music to my ears.’ I couldn’t believe what [Sam] was reading. But then I also started to get nervous because I just heard a lot of dialogue, no stage direction. I knew I had a lot to chew on, and I knew this was going to be a tremendous challenge. But at this stage in my life, that’s what excites me.” But if he’s being honest (and really, he’s nothing but), there was one specific aspect of the shoot that was more of a trial something he really and truly had to endure. “I personally [hate] love scenes, kissing on set,” the actor admits. “I’m really uncomfortable with intimacy in front of the camera, for many different reasons. [I was like], ‘I can make this look good and sexy. Just watch — let me give you a take. I don’t even have to touch her.’” Basically, no nudity or heavy petting required. Alas, he knew what the script dictated — just as much foreplay as fighting — and he knew what had to be done. (Even if that meant filming some awkward moments in front of his sister, Katia, who operated as the film’s health and safety warden, as well as a co-EP.) “Intimacy came from our desire to make this really as lived-in as possible. If [viewers] don’t believe us as a couple, then we’re going to lose all the connectivity of this story, and we’re done. We needed to make this work.” And in the end, amorous anxiety aside, being the Malcolm to Zendaya’s Marie was a pretty enjoyable experience; he has nothing but good, glowing things to say about his co-star. “She’s such a beautiful individual,” he says. “She’s an incredible artist, and — I say this all the time — a generational talent. It was easy to just listen; a call and response, read and react, listen to your partner and she’ll show you the way. She and Sam are so simpatico. It was such an interesting experience to watch them create and talk and work together. I found myself constantly trying to catch up.” He’s being humble. Washington and Zendaya were on equal footing: not only do they have equal billing, but both paid out of pocket to fund the project, serving as executive producers alongside Levinson and his wife, @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 87
Ashley, Yariv Milchan and Michael Schafer (both of whom donated their proceeds to charity), Aaron L. Gilbert, Will Greenfield and Kid Cudi. All took a big risk in name of the greater good: keeping Hollywood alive during the pandemic. At the time, in spring 2020, sets had been shut down. There were no real safety protocols in place; the future was uncertain. But their gamble paid off. Malcolm & Marie effectively became the first entirely Covid-free production — the first movie to be completely shot during the pandemic, as well as the first where none of the cast and crew contracted the novel coronavirus. “It definitely felt like all eyes were on us,” Washington admits. “The industry was kind of looking to see if we were going to pull this off, so we felt a lot of pressure. [But] back against the wall is where I like to be. It brings out the best in me.” So yet again, Washington tested his mettle and rose to the challenge. Failure was not an option. “Preparing for it, to me — where I was in my life — it felt like desperation. It felt like survival. Obviously, we were living in the unknown as a world, but in the industry specifically, I didn’t know if I’d ever get another chance at it. When I found out certain unions were on board and we were going to do this, putting down our own money and investing in ourselves, it felt like survival. So I prepared with this sort of desperate need and desire to get this [movie] as true and as correct as we could, to show the industry it’s possible to continue making films safely.” This was a tight-knit crew, all with multiple duties outside of their norm. There was a mandatory two-week quarantine in Monterey, Calif., prior to filming, which took place between June 17 and July 2. Coronavirus testing was enforced before production began and again after it ended. Daily temperature checks were rigorous. Only one location was used — Carmel’s Caterpillar House, the first LEED Platinum custom home on the Central Coast — with the remote Hidden Valley Inn used as base camp. There were no more than 12 people on set at any time, and they wore protective gear. Craft services became a thing of the past; all food had to be individually wrapped. The stars were responsible for handling their own costumes. Without a movement coach, Washington had to choreograph his own opening-scene dance moves, digging “from many, many years of bar mitzvahs and weddings.” And he nails it. They both do. It isn’t a surprise that the movie is already earning heaps of early Oscar buzz. The Academy Award conversation is not one that Washington wants to have. He refuses to let himself get excited again. After all, early whispers also dictated a likely lock for 2018’s BlacKkKlansman, which did not result in a nomination for him. “I’ve been there before, and I’m good. I hope the proper people get recognized, and they usually do,” he says. “For me, the buzz is when, the day after I find out Spike Lee, Adam Driver and Barry Alexander Brown get nominated, I hear that Christopher Nolan wants to meet me and put me in his movie. It’s [when] you get that call from Sam Levinson, and he says he wants you to do [his film]. That’s what gets me going.” And although L.A. was under lockdown at the time of our interview, in worse shape than the city he escaped, he stands by his choices — all of them. “The irony is, it’s now safer where my apartment is in Brooklyn than in Los Angeles. But I wouldn’t change the experience for anything, because if I was there, I wouldn’t have gotten to do Malcolm & Marie. I would never have been able to connect with people I consider to be good friends now: Sam Levinson, Ashley Levinson and [executive producer Kevin Turen]. I got to work with my sister, Katia, and my best friend [Dominic Miller, who incidentally also shot Washington for his Haute Living cover], who was a still photographer on [the film]. All of these things I’m a part of because I was in the right place at the right time.” 88 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com

So apparently, John David Washington is really good at making lemonade out of lemons. But mac and cheese? Not so much. And that’s unfortunate, because what he wants more than anything in the world right now, at this very moment, is his mom Pauletta’s magic recipe. (He loves the dish so much that it even makes an unforgettable appearance in Malcolm & Marie.) There’s currently a batch chilling in the freezer of his rented L.A. digs, but there’s a big difference between reheating and the freshly made real deal. “She makes the best mac and cheese on the planet, and I need to know how to make it. You would have thought I’d have picked up something living with her for two and a half months,” he laments. “2021 goals for real.” Of course, he has loftier plans for the coming year, including maybe a girlfriend. Maybe. If he isn’t too busy working. “It is totally vacant, my tree is totally empty. It’s bare. And maybe that’s a good thing. I think maybe it’s bringing out the best art in me,” he declares. He’s worked so hard to defy the odds that Covid has forced into his career that we can understand why. And his ambitions are big. To start, he plans on crushing his next role (which he starts filming just days after our interview), in an untitled David O. Russell film co-starring Christian Bale and Margot Robbie. He’s also in the thriller Born to Be Murdered with Alicia Vikander, which releases later this year. And there’s possibly a play in his future. “There’s some stuff happening to make that dream come true,” he shares hesitantly, before adding with more conviction, “I have to get on stage. It’s a requirement. I will feel better about myself as an artist knowing that I’ve gotten up on stage. That’s my heart’s desire.” His fantasies include Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Othello, as well as August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson. But his real goal for 2021 is simple: “To continue to make films with people who love to make films; to be able to work with people who aren’t jerks. Because it is possible. With my last two projects, I worked with some people on the genius level, in my opinion, and they’re not jerks, they’re not mean, they’re not entitled — they were welcoming, inclusive and innovative. I’ve seen that it’s possible to be great and still work at a certain level, so that’s how I want to work now. That’s the goal. That, and, you know, maybe a girlfriend.” Joking aside, when asked to expand, he does so willingly, continuing, “Just taking the arrogance out of a project or off a set really helps. Deflating this entitlement, this know-it-all thing with inclusion and the best idea in the room with humility, I think is what I’ve enjoyed the most. I’ve been very fortunate, between a Spike Lee, a Sam Levinson, a Christopher Nolan, a Reinaldo Marcus Green [Monsters and

Men]; just good people making great work and creating an environment conducive to putting out the best product, telling the best truth we can. Because it’s important to me, what we do. We’re not as important as doctors or essential workers, people on the front lines, but I do feel there is importance in what we do: to provide entertainment and instill hope in people looking for an escape, looking for love, looking for mystery.” If his intention is to entertain, he’s been doing so in spades since scoring his breakout role in HBO’s football-centric series Ballers, playing bad boy Ricky Jerret from 2015 to 2019 (though his film debut was actually alongside his father, Oscar winner Denzel Washington, in 1992’s Malcolm X). He returned to the big screen in 2017 in Lionsgate’s Love Beat Rhymes, opposite Common, and signed on to films such as Fox Searchlight’s The Old Man and the Gun with Casey Affleck and Robert Redford and All Rise with A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright and Jennifer Hudson. Next, of course, came the film that started his grand ascension, BlacKkKlansman, which not only earned a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival (as well as the Grand Prix) but multiple nominations for Washington, including best actor nominations for both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Thus far, while he’s still ready to accept “the good, the bad, and the ugly,” he’s extremely grateful for the path he’s taken and doesn’t take it for granted — especially at this point in time. “I’m appreciative, and that’s why I work extremely hard and don’t rest until I get it right, because I know I’m so lucky to have these opportunities,” he says. “I know it doesn’t happen like this often, so I take it very seriously. I apply all that gratitude in the relentless pursuit of making things the best I can, making the best product I know how. I’m grateful that I get paid for this, that I can make a living doing it, but honestly, I would actually say I would pay to do this job, which I’ve actually done now with Malcolm & Marie.” But then, he learned from the best. His mother (who reads each and every one of his scripts) has appeared in films like Philadelphia and series such as She’s Gotta Have It. And his dad is…well, he’s Denzel. In addition to helping John David land his earliest film roles — the aforementioned Malcolm X, 1995’s Devil in a Blue Dress and 2010’s The Book of Eli — he’s also provided some sage life and career advice: “‘Keep God first,’ and ‘If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage.’” He has taken both to heart. He respects and admires his father’s career, but will we see the two of them together on the big screen soon? Who knows? “Who’s refereeing?” Washington jokes. “No, obviously to be in any kind of production with Denzel Washington, who’s one of the greatest artists of all time and definitely my personal favorite, too, [would be incredible]. This is a man I highly revere. I’ve been watching him since I was a kid, of course, and he can do no wrong. He’s not into celebrity; he’s not into fame. He’s into what counts: the truth. I’m just a huge fan.” That being said, he doesn’t want to ride on his father’s coattails. In fact, when he landed Ballers, he deliberately made a point of not capitalizing on the name Denzel Washington. He was doing it, and he was doing it on his own. “You know, people are always going to associate me with my father, which is fine, but that’s why I didn’t do any press early during Ballers,” he confides. “I just wanted it to be about the work.” Viewers could make up their own mind about his character, Ricky; they could “love him or hate him, but whatever your opinions are, it has nothing to do with who the actor’s related to. Some people didn’t like it, some people

connected with it. But at least they connected or didn’t for the performance, not the guy doing the performance.” But as much as he can claim his adult acting career as his own, both his parents inspired the fantasy that would one day become his reality. “I daydreamed a lot as a kid. I remember my dad holding his [Oscar] statue up, shouting out his kids when he won during his speech, like ‘Kids, go to bed’ and things of that nature. I remember my mother and him dressing up to go to awards shows. I remember him coming home with red hair because he was getting ready for Malcolm X. I remember him walking me around New York spitting his Shakespeare lines and then seeing him with the mullet on stage, and it looked like a magic trick; he seemed like a different person. So I could always see myself wanting to do that, wanting to be an actor.” His first aha moment came when working with Spike Lee…for the second time. “It hit me in a different way, because he had worked with my dad. At the table read in his office in Brooklyn — which is like a museum, really — there was this big poster behind me. It was from Mo’ Better Blues, which my dad starred in with Spike’s sister [Joie Lee]. I felt a lot of pressure, but I was also like, ‘Wow, this is kind of cool. I’m doing my dream. I’m kind of living it.’” But it wasn’t until that Christopher Nolan call that he began to really believe in himself, really believe that his hard work had paid off. “When Christopher Nolan asked me, ‘What do you think you’d like to do? Because we’ll adjust to you.’ When he said that to me, it was like, ‘Did Christopher Nolan just say he’ll adjust to me? Did that really just happen? I can’t believe it.’ That’s when I was like, ‘My wildest dreams are coming true.’ I could never see this specific thing happening, the dream I’m living happening. I didn’t dream this big.” @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 91
