Hopkins with co-star Olivia Coleman, who plays his daughter in The Father
PHOTOS BY SEAN GLEASON, COURTESY OF SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
(Left and right) Hopkins stars as Anthony in Sony Pictures Classics’ The Father
nthony Hopkins knows what it’s like to literally lose his mind. But not, you know, in a fava-beans-andChianti, let-me-eat-your-liver kind of way. The year was 1996. Then 58, Hopkins was shooting The Edge in the wilds of Alberta, Canada, with Alec Baldwin. Playwright David Mamet’s script called for a plane crash, and for Hopkins’ character to fight for his life in an icy mountain lake. And as it sometimes happens, life began to imitate art. He felt the water creeping into his wetsuit but didn’t think anything of it until he was back in his trailer ten minutes after emerging from the water, dripping, frigid and addled. He began to realize something was very, very wrong; his brain simply wouldn’t function. In the retelling, Hopkins, now 82, remembers the incident like it was yesterday — aside from a few forgotten hours, that is. “I was so cold. I went back to my trailer and thought, ‘Where am I?’ I couldn’t remember if I was in Canada or Switzerland. It was a little like being drunk,” he recalls, summarizing those lost moments when he was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Calgary and diagnosed with hypothermia. “I lost part of my memory for a few hours. Not severely, but I couldn’t figure out what time it was; I had lapses of moments. It was unnerving. The doctor said, ‘You’re OK, but don’t do this again. You’re not a spring chicken anymore.’” Hopkins agreed. Personally, he has since played it safe. Professionally, well, that’s a different story. Twenty-four years later, he willingly — eagerly, even — decided to take on a character who’s submerged in his own mind. The Father, out Dec. 18 from Sony Pictures Classics, revolves around a British octogenarian’s descent into dementia. When Hopkins read Academy Award winner Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of lauded French playwright Florian Zeller’s internationally acclaimed play, he knew, come hell or icy water, that the title role had to be his. It was there in every fiber of his being, a similar sensation to one he’d had 30 years earlier when reading the script for The Silence of the Lambs — which, of course, resulted in his iconic Oscar-winning turn as Hannibal Lecter. Both were parts he was born to play. “I had no qualms about it at all; I just knew I could do it,” he says now, over Zoom. “You don’t have to do any tricks or method or any of that stuff when you have a really good script, which this was. I was very keen.” So he met with Zeller and Hampton at his favored pre-Covid haunt, L.A.’s iconic Hotel Bel-Air, and told them as much. Needless to say, it didn’t take much convincing. In fact, Hampton, with whom he’d
worked twice before — on 1973’s A Doll’s House and 1995’s Carrington — had rewritten the title character, Andre, with Hopkins in mind (the character’s name has been changed to Anthony for its silver screen adaptation), and first-time director Zeller agreed to postpone his debut so that Hopkins — who had already signed on to play Benedict XVI in 2019’s dramedy The Two Popes — could star. And slowly but surely, the project, which had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, came together. Hopkins was joined by a formidable cast including Olivia Williams, Rufus Sewell, Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots and Oscar winner Olivia Coleman (who plays his longsuffering daughter) for a speedy three-week shoot on a simple studio set just west of London last May. The interactions between Hopkins and Coleman in particular are, quite simply, perfection, he agrees. “We rehearsed about five minutes, but when you’re playing with a really fine actor like Olivia Coleman… you don’t have to act at all. This part was so easy for me, so easy. When you are so prepared, it’s like driving a car; you don’t need to put effort into it, it just takes you over. Whatever I play, whether it’s this or Hannibal Lecter, it’s just me anyway.” The result of their hard work is a beautifully acted and elegantly written independent film, just as powerful and impactful as its staged predecessor, which won Frank Langella a lead actor Tony in 2016 during its Broadway debut. Lightning might strike for Hopkins here, too, as the film is generating more than a little pre-Oscar buzz. Many critics say that it could result in his second-ever win. And it would be justified. He doesn’t, as a habit, read about himself, so hearing of potential Academy interest is new information. “Is that the latest?” he wonders. Most actors find validation in Academy approval, but not Hopkins, who has been nominated five times, including this very year for The Two Popes. He enjoys the praise, but he doesn’t need it. “It’s kind of pleasant, but I don’t hanker after it,” he says. “I’m alive, and I’ve done all the work I’ve enjoyed doing. The last five or six years have been the most terrific years of my life. I’ve done many plays, I played the lead in King Lear with Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent; I did The Dresser with Ian McKellen, a wonderful actor; The Two Popes with Jonathan Pryce; and now The Father, with this wonderful company, and it’s been the best time. The awards and all that stuff, it’s very pleasant to be regarded, but it’s a bonus. We’ll see what happens. [As I always say]: Ask nothing, expect nothing and receive everything. Life is a succession.” @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 17
t was absolutely, unequivocally the right time of his life to be tackling such a role. “I’m going to be 83 this year; I don’t have to act to play an old guy — though I don’t feel it, I’m very fit and strong. But it’s not such a big stretch for me to play that part now. The great blessing of getting old is that you don’t have to act anymore,” he maintains. But the role required much more than an understanding of the aging process. The character Anthony is quietly losing his mind. As his grip on reality fails, his fear is perfectly and poignantly conveyed in every expression; his desperation is palatable as he swings from anger to sadness in the blink of an eye. This character is becoming a broken man as the disease slowly kills him from the inside out, robbing him of his memories, perspective and time. It is exquisite acting from Hopkins. “The man I play is not at peace. He’s panicking, because he’s losing all of his anchors. He’s a bright man, a bit of an idiot savant, but he’s losing his marbles,” he explains. Although he personally has very little experience with dementia, he could easily imagine the fear and anger that come with it. Something quite similar happened to his father, Richard, a baker, toward the end of his life. “[My father experienced] that slowing-down process [that Anthony does in the film]. He had heart disease, he smoked too much and did a little too much drinking,” Hopkins says. “He was a feisty man — a bundle of energy — but his deterioration the last year of his life was pitiful. He would go into weeping jags and [suffered from] depression. He’d get very angry, because that’s what you do when you’re facing death. He wasn’t consumed by his anger, but he was frustrated with his life. He’d get very defensive and go on the attack. But he was a good man. I loved him very much.” And it’s love that leads to the film’s most heartbreaking moment — the one, in fact, that broke Hopkins. Without giving too much away, it comes, as the hardest things often do, near the end. “It was a complicated scene,” he says. “The first take was OK; I felt it was good. Florian only did one or two takes in general, but this time, he wanted another. I said, ‘I don’t think I can.’ I don’t know why. I’m not moody in that sense, but this was difficult. I said, ‘Just give 18 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
me a break.’ [When] I went back on set to do the second take, I saw the empty chair near the bed where my character had been sitting, his glasses and a photograph of his two daughters in past times. And I thought, ‘That’s it. His photograph, his glasses, his book, his pen. I knew what that meant: He’s dead.’ And that got me. That finality is what we all face. We have all our connections, but in the end, it’s all dust. Gone with the wind.” It’s no surprise that a such role would cause Hopkins to contemplate his own impermanence, even though he’s someone who doesn’t have to be “locked in a padded cell” after playing each part. He typically just has “a cup of coffee and goes home,” he says. But this time was different. “I’m thinking about my own mortality every day,” he confides. “I’m not obsessed with death, but I think about it. I think, ‘My god, what a strange thing it is!’” Perhaps he doesn’t fear death itself, but the mental deterioration his onscreen doppelganger displays definitely affected him. Several times throughout the course of our conversation, he makes it a point to note that he’s doing everything in his power to stay mentally alert. “I think we need to take care of our brain, get as much sleep as we can. I read, I learn lines — I mean, I learned the entire script for The Father before we even started. I did King Lear the year before that; I did The Two Popes. I make sure I know all the text — I go over it 150, 200, 250 times, which is kind of obsessive, I know.” But he’d give anything to avoid his father’s fate, to prevent that slow slide into oblivion. “My father is very much in me, but hopefully I’ve modified myself enough [to be different from him]. I remember those days when he was dying very clearly: that kind of listlessness that I try to fight against. I stay awake. I stay fit because I don’t want to descend into that hopelessness.” Lest he sound too gloomy, know this: Hopkins loves life. He loves his life. And he doesn’t plan on giving up on it anytime soon. “I could go on for many years, but you never know. [Either way], I have a long time to die, and it’s a big sleep. Mostly I just think about life, [with] a contented state of mind, really, because I think I have had the most incredible, amazing life, beyond my dreams. It’s like somebody else wrote my story. I don’t know how I got here, you know? I look back over my life and I think, ‘Well, this is extraordinary.’”
hen he was a boy growing up in Port Talbot, Wales, long before he was discovered by Sir Laurence Olivier, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and holding his first Oscar, Anthony Hopkins hated afternoons. He found them depressing. Don’t ask why — he doesn’t really know. But now, oh now. How things have changed. “I love mornings best, but I really like all day now. I prefer to wake up and live,” he says, minutes after greeting us over Zoom with a big, beaming smile — the kind that reaches his eyes — a little wave and a bright, “Hi! It’s Tony!” But does he really know the time? Hopkins hasn’t left his Pacific Palisades pad in nearly nine months, since the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Morning, afternoon and night have all blended into one long day. And he couldn’t be happier about it. His home is indeed a confinement, but one of his own making. A 5,778-square-foot gilded, three-story cage where he practices a plethora of artistic pursuits, playing the piano daily, sometimes for a full hour; painting, composing and reading. A quick scan of his bookshelf reveals a variety of authors, ranging from Francis Bacon to Christina Rossetti to David Hockney. He’s currently digging into Charles Dickens’ Bleak House (“There’s some cheerful reading!”) and promises that he will check out The Father co-star Olivia Coleman in Fleabag, which, up until this moment, he had not heard of. (“‘Flea,’ like living fleas? I must look it up!” he enthuses.) “We have to take care,” he says. “I don’t want to risk [my health]; I just accept that there’s nothing much else to do. My lovely wife, Stella, keeps me in lockdown because she doesn’t want me to get sick. I think, ‘What’s the big deal outside anyway? You walk up the street and go to the same restaurants.’ This is a chance to reset. And I’m having a great time in lockdown!” As anyone who follows him on Instagram knows, he’s used his quarantine time to maximum advantage, letting the world see the real Anthony Hopkins, in all of his Hawaiian shirt–wearing glory. A “sir” he may be, but one who dances like Drake; swaps funny animal videos with his “coterie” of friends; talks to his cat, Niblo, a 10-year-old stray he rescued in Budapest, like a human; admits that his greatest pleasure in life is breakfast (specifically, protein shakes and oatmeal); shares goofy videos of himself playing classical piano while wearing a Halloween horror mask; and who, at the age of 82, decided to launch a fragrance collection for the hell of it (and also to do some good: sales of his Anthony Hopkins Fragrance Collection eau de parfum, candles and diffusers will benefit the nonprofit No Kid Hungry, an attempt to “bring a spark of light into the world”). At this point in his career, could we expect anything less? Sure, he’s starred in a slew of Merchant Ivory period pieces, like The Remains of the Day and Howard’s End, but lest we forget, he’s also the Marvel Universe’s Odin, and he doesn’t mind playing with robots, as he did opposite Mark Wahlberg in Transformers: The Last Knight and on HBO’s dystopian dramatic series Westworld. This is also the man who completely transformed himself into radically different historical figures, including former presidents
Richard Nixon in Nixon and John Quincy Adams in Amistad, artist Pablo Picasso in Surviving Picasso and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in Hitchcock. Basically, no one should be surprised that he continues to surprise with his cinematic choices. The man knows what he’s doing — as his Oscar win, five nominations, seven Golden Globe nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards and three BAFTAs suggest. We suppose he’s grateful these days that he wasn’t “bright enough to do anything else.” (His words, not ours.) “I was a terrible schoolkid; I couldn’t play sports. This has been my hobby all my life, acting. I stumbled into it and I thought, ‘This beats working for a living.’” His eyes twinkle. “That was Robert Mitchum’s favorite quote. I’ve adopted it.” Don’t let him fool you: acting has always been a calling, not a fallback. Several years after graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, he was spotted by Sir Olivier, who invited him to join the Royal National Theatre in 1965. His first major film role, Richard the Lionheart in 1968’s The Lion in Winter, followed soon after. “I knew from an early age what I wanted,” Hopkins says now. “It was something beyond ambition. I knew there was something I could do that maybe somebody else couldn’t, and I had a great mentor in Laurence Olivier. I worked with some incredible people, like Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn. I’ve been very fortunate.” What he really wants now, right now, is continued serenity. He’s having a grand old time at home, but as much as he’s aware of what’s happening outside, he finds that being assaulted by its negativity so regularly is killing his vibe. And so, for the past week, he’s been on a media strike. “I know the world would say I’m being an ostrich, but it’s too much noise,” he explains. “You think, ‘What on earth are we all talking about?’ Everyone’s got an opinion about everything! I can’t listen to it. I haven’t watched the news for five days now, and already I feel like a different person. I really do. I go through patches where I won’t read or watch anything at all. I get so sick of those same faces blabbering on about this and that. We’re addicted to bad news. I just want a peaceful life.” What he refuses to do, he says, is give in to cynicism. “I think, ‘Well, this is the world. None of us are perfect; we all make mistakes. Governments screw up, wars start, that’s the state of humankind.’ I was playing some Brahms and Rachmaninov this morning, and I couldn’t help but think what extraordinary genius there was in these great musicians and composers, yet how the same nations that produced them produced such colossal warfare. But that’s the nature of human beings. We’re aggressive, hardwired killers on one side and then tremendously creative on the other. Yet I don’t despair of us; I think we have so much potential. Being cynical is being cowardly and a waste of time,” he declares, before musing, “Of course, I do get cynical sometimes, but I think, ‘Oh come on, forget it. The best thing to do is weather it. Just do the best you can. You have to believe in the present because the rest is an illusion anyway. Live life, say yes and get on with it.’” And what a life he’s had. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 21

ENTER… PURSUED BY BEAR KYLE MACHLACHLAN’S WASHINGTON-BASED WINE LABEL IS A THESPIAN-DRIVEN LABOR OF LOVE. BY LAURA SCHREFFLER
Series, we’re exploring one person’s personal journey and exploration in the vast world of wine. That person is Kyle MacLachlan. Many know MacLachlan because of his screen acting career — for his Emmy-nominated role as Dale Cooper in David Lynch‘s Twin Peaks series and film prequel, as well as other Lynch vehicles like Blue Velvet and Dune, among other high-profile parts (hey, Trey MacDougal!). But it was actually theater that inspired his side hustle, the Washington state–based winery Pursued by Bear (any true fan of the Bard will immediately recognize this reference from A Winter’s Tale). In 2005, MacLachlan opted to launch his company in Walla Walla from Columbia Valley vineyards, using oak barrels to create a limited production of reds and a rosé that can only be made from the terroir of his home state, in partnership with vintner Eric Dunham of Dunham Cellars. It is now regarded as one of Washington’s highestrated wine labels. Indeed, the 2017 Twin Bear — a 100% Cabernet blend — earned a 92 rating from Robert Parker‘s Wine Advocate. Currently, the brand also has Pursued by Bear, a 95% Cabernet/5% Merlot blend; Baby Bear, made of 100% Syrah; Blushing Bear, 62% Grenache and 38% Mourvèdre; and Bear Cub: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 9% Syrah. We talked to MacLachlan about why Pursued by Bear is one of the best damn things to ever happen to him — and why, as Dale Cooper might say, it really is “Damn good wine.” 22 HAUTE LIVING hauteliving.com
HL: You opted to start a winery in Washington because you’re from the area, but have you ever thought about opening another leg of the business in Napa or Sonoma? KM: I looked into Napa for a very brief moment. The cost of making wine there was exorbitant, so I thought, “There was no way that’s going to work.” Everything came back to Washington for me, so we’ve been here since 2005. HL: As you’ve expanded, have you thought about broadening your reach to California? KM: Not really. It would be a completely different operation. I have thought about maybe partnering with a winemaker friend from Napa to work with my winemaker, Dan Wampfler, on a white. I haven’t broached it with him yet, but that’s percolating a bit. It would be my first white wine, as well. Maybe there’s something there. HL: Has the venture transformed itself from a pet project into a full-time job for you? KM: I like my day job, but my day job has been closed for a while because of the pandemic. There are a few actors that are working in a very strict capacity, but by and large, most of us are biding our time and waiting for

HL: Pursued by Bear. Where did the name come from? KM: It wasn’t my first choice. I was looking for something a little more boring, to be honest. I knew I wanted to name it something that had to do with my day job — a theater-related name — and I came to that conclusion simply because the winemaker who started me on this journey, a gentleman named Eric Dunham. We were partners on the project and initially I thought we would do an amalgamation of our names, but it always ended up sounding like a Scotch whisky: Dunloch, Lochdun; it felt much more appropriate for the brown liquid as opposed to the rosé or red. I embarked on this journey to find a name, and most of the things I hit on were already taken — Upstage, Downstage, Backstage — it struck me that the stage direction from The Winter’s Tale, the entire direction is: “Exit, pursued by a bear.” It’s a very specific stage direction, and if you’re a Shakespeare person or English lit person at all, you’ll immediately get the reference immediately. Everyone else is kind of scratching their heads. But I loved it, and it seemed to make sense in a whimsical, unexpected kind of way, much in the way that I was embarking upon this wine journey.
production to resume at the level and intensity that it used to be. It’s going to take some time... In the meantime I’ve been focusing a lot of my attention on the wine. I found I could do this 24/7. It’s that engaging. You can involve yourself as little or as much as you want, really. For a minimum amount, it’s about half of my time. I’ve got five different wines now, and they all need attention. With the wine calendar, every month there’s something new you need to attend to. Some months are slower, but right now we’re in the middle of harvest, so it’s really jam-packed, especially for my winemaker. During the lulls I’ve been focusing on packaging and the tasting room I’m going to have coming in Walla Walla this spring. HL: How often do you drink your wine? KM: I drink a lot of my wine, to be honest! I pulled out a rosé from my cellar and said, “I have to have some more sent down!” Everything I make is in Walla Walla. They’ll package up a couple cases for me and ship them down. HL: Of the varietals you produce, what is your go-to, and why? KM: What I’m drinking the most of is Twin Bear, which was just released this year. It’s now available on the website. It’s the most expensive wine I’ve made. It’s 100% Cabernet. It’s three vineyards but one dominant vineyard, very beautiful aging with the French oak barrels. I just got a nice email from my brand manager saying that Robert Parker gave it a 92 rating for the Wine Advocate, which is really nice, because he’s tough!. This is its inaugural vintage; a 92 for Twin Bear. Would I have liked a 95 or 96? Yes. But will I take a 92, sure. There’s still time. This is a long journey. HL: I feel like you’ll be doing this for quite some time. KM: You know, I think so. My son is 12. I don’t know if this is something he might take over, because you start thinking about those things, but I’m enjoying it at the moment, and it’s completely mine. I don’t have any investors. I finance everything. I’ve got a lot of loans from the banks, but my idea is to build the brand the way I want to. If there comes a point where there’s outside interest, I’ll think about that, but at the moment I’m really having fun with it, just kind of pushing it down the board. HL: How has a product like Coravin changed the way you experience wine personally? KM: Where the Coravin has really made an impact for me is in the tasting room, because often there are bottles that are special. Wines that you want people to try that aren’t necessarily for sale, but you want to share the journey of the wine. We can’t do tastings right now because of the pandemic, but we’d go to places like Chicago, and we’d always have a special bottle that we’d pour from, and the Coravin would be essential for that. You’re not going to just pour out a bottle. It’s very measured, and it’s really just as a special treat. If I want to go back and look at a 2007 or a 2009, I may not necessarily want to open it because there aren’t that many [bottles] of it, but I can Coravin it and savor it, and that’s been really helpful. I tend to finish the bottle pretty quickly, so I do one of the shortterm, where I plunge the air out, and it keeps it for me. It also gives me a little indication of what the wine will taste like when it opens up. HL: So it’s fair to say that Coravin has changed the way you look at opening an expensive bottle of wine, because you can make it last? KM: Definitely. Or that you feel bad once you’ve opened, and let’s say you do get halfway through it and it is an older vintage, and you think, “This may not last even 24 hours or 12 hours.” The Coravin is just a wonderful way to keep an older wine, a library wine. There are a couple of mine that are getting like that, actually; the 2005, 2006. There aren’t that many of those left, and the Coravin would be perfect for those. HL: How do you balance your acting career with owning a winery? KM: It was challenging. When I was doing Atlantic Crossing, which comes out in the States later this year, we were shooting in Prague, and the time difference was crazy. I would work all day and then I’d allocate an hour
or so to connect, make some decisions, talk to everyone that I have on the ground in Washington. I’ve got a great winemaker and a great brand manager who are able to shoulder things to a greater or lesser degree, depending on my schedule. They can handle things on their own when I’m not available, but they can also take a step back, which they’re grateful for, when I’m more involved. There’s just a lot of little things. It’s running a business. It’s something I never knew about until I got into the wine business, but it’s really time-consuming. The first thing you should think about when you wake up is your business, your brand, what you need to do today to move the needle forward. All things I’m learning. I’m not a businessperson. I took one economics class in college, which I was miserable at. But I’m finding that everything comes back to business, so that’s where I’m at right now. HL What a cool second career you have. KM: Between that, being a father to my 12-year-old, who is entering into a very interesting period of time with Zoom schooling, it’s really challenging. But it’s nice having him home for most of the day, as opposed to at school. I’m not sure how he feels about it, but I’m enjoying it. HL: What do you think about the Dune remake? Did Timothée Chalamet reach out for any advice on playing Paul? KM: We met briefly — he’s a very nice young man — and I’ve seen the images and watched the trailer. It looks fantastic. I was impressed with the digital work and re-creation of giant sand worms and some of the spacecraft. When we did it in 1983, we didn’t have that sophistication. Everything we did was practical. Little miniatures and models and things, which were cool too, but a different look. Watching the trailer, I had an unexpected response. It was very nostalgic for me. It felt like I was revisiting a period of time in my life — a long time ago — and sharing scenes with the actors I worked with on that movie. Siân Philips as the Reverend Mother and Patrick Stewart as Gurney and Max von Sydow. Even though it wasn’t them, I was feeling the emotional memories of that time. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie, first because I love the story, and second of all I think it’s going to be a trip down memory lane in some odd way for me. HL: What are you working on currently? I hear that David Lynch might be making a new season of Twin Peaks. KM: Nothing that I’ve heard. David doesn’t have any plans. We do Zoom calls from time to time. Me, him and Laura Dern. I’m always sort of saying “What are you thinking?” And I think he’s feeling like he did what he was going to do with it and was grateful for the opportunity to return. But it’s David. He could turn on a dime. You just never know. I don’t think so, but I’m sure there’s a certain percentage of possibility that it could happen. HL: Any last thoughts on Pursued by Bear? KM: Just that I’m loving the journey, that I’m loving sharing it with people. It’s really about my personality. I tend to be sort of playful and appear not to take things too seriously and poke fun at things. It’s the same with the wine. It’s playful and fun, but it’s also serious. I’m very serious about the wine and looking to create the best that I can with the resources available to me in Washington state. It’s always been about quality first and being able to share that with old friends, new friends and people that are interested. HL: Last but not least, what is the greatest luxury in life, and why? KM: Time with my son is really a great luxury, doing something we both love, even if it’s digging a hole in the sand. It could even just be cooking together in the kitchen. To be honest, that’s been part of my experience during the quarantine, having those moments more available and more possible. If there’s a silver lining, that would be it. @hauteliving HAUTE LIVING 23

Aston Martin’s V12 Speedster prototype is here. BY NIKITA PAWAR
that wasn’t the case with Aston Martin. The British luxury automobile manufacturer has revealed the first working prototype of the $950,000 V12 Speedster, after numerous sneak peeks and teasers. The company first announced the V12 Speedster in January, when it shared a first glimpse of the new open-cockpit, driver-oriented sports car. “The V12 Speedster once again showcases not only this great British brand’s ambition and ingenuity, but also celebrates our rich and unrivalled heritage,” said Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda president and group CEO. Over the next two months, the fleshed-out car design was launched at the Aston Martin headquarters in Gaydon. The car will make its global debut later this year, and deliveries are planned to start in the first quarter of 2021. The V12 Speedster isn’t the first open-cockpit sports car. Ferrari led the way with the Monza in 2018, followed by McLaren in 2019 with the similarly minimalist Elva. Bentley joined in by announcing the forthcoming Bacalar, but the design includes windscreens. The two-seater V12 Speedster will be restricted to only 88 examples worldwide. Created by in-house bespoke service Q by Aston Martin, this is truly a racer’s car, with an elegant combination of an authentic, driver-oriented sports car using cutting-edge motorsport and aviation technology and an enthralling experience of luxury. Its forward-looking features are made

with the same advanced materials and expert engineering used throughout Aston Martin’s contemporary sports car range. The car clearly nods to DBR1 and the DBS Superleggera; the former helped the brand win both Aston Martin’s legendary 1000km Nürburgring race in 1953 and the 1959 Le Mans 24 hours. The marque also pays homage to the Centenary CC100 Speedster Concept shown in 2013 to celebrate Aston Martin’s 100th anniversary. The Speedster’s design, while modern and dynamic, also has a powerful heart, with a high-performance variant of Aston Martin’s now iconic 5.2-litre V12 twin-turbo engine, capable of generating an output of around 700 hp and 700 Nm. Ferrari’s Monza SP2 makes 800 hp, while McLaren is at a shy 804 hp. Offering a compelling breadth of performance, superb response and thrilling V12 soundtrack, the Speedster engine is coupled to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission mounted toward the rear of the car. It takes 3.5 seconds to tout zero to 62 mph. The Aston Martin V12 Speedster has an abundance of character, with the engine note and sound quality playing an important part in the undeniably invigorating driving experience.

+Color theory Maserati MC20: A bit of color, a lot of speed. BY NIKITA PAWAR
IF 2020 BEGAN BUMPILY, IT’S BECOME SMOOTH TOWARD
the end. The Maserati universe has introduced its second sports car, the Maserati MC20, with a sporty soul and a luxurious body. Presented on September 9 in Modena during the “MMXX: Time to be Budacious” event, the car is the successor to 2004 Maserati MC12. Maserati’s contribution to the world of high-performance GT cars is undeniable, and the MC20 (MC for Maserati Corse and 20 for 2020) combines performance, sportiness and luxury in unique Maserati style. Its predecessor the MC12 was loosely based on Ferrari’s Enzo. Now, the Italian masterpiece leaves behind the Ferrari imprint, ditching the V12 engine for the new 3.0-litre twinturbo V6 (called “Nettuno”), capable of a 621 horsepower V6 with a torque of 730 Nm (538 lb-ft). With a weight of less than 1,500 kg, it delivers 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 2.9 seconds, with a top speed over 325 km an hour. The car also uses MTC (Maserati Twin Combustion) technology, a groundbreaking combustion system developed in-house and patented by Maserati. Beyond its hyper-powered heart, the external features of the Maserati are just as impressive. The swing-up butterfly doors, sleek lines and majestic, masculine stance are definite attention grabbers. The exceptional aerodynamics were designed over 2,000 man-hours, and the ergonomics have a drag of less than 0.38. The MC20 is designed to enable coupé and convertible versions, and for full-electric power. The car also includes 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, electronic driver aids including the latest generation in antilock brakes, stability control, and multi-mode traction control. On the inside, Maserati focuses on the ambience along with the driving experience. The two 10-inch screens, one for the cockpit and the other for the Maserati Multimedia System (MIA), are simply designed, with very few sharp edges and minimal distractions. The carbon fiber-clad central console has regular features like driving mode selector (GT, Wet, Sport, Corsa and a fifth, ESC Off, which deactivates the control functions), full connected navigation, multimedia system controls, Alexa integration, Wi-Fi Hotspot, and a handy storage compartment underneath the armrest. The Maserati MC20 comes in six newly developed colors: Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma and Grigio Mistero. They convey important themes, with a strong reference to Made in Italy and the Maserati tradition.

+PERFECT PAIR 2020 McLaren GT: The love child of a GT and sports car. BY NIKITA PAWAR
THE 2020 MCLAREN GT IS A SUPERCAR THAT’S THRILLING YET REFINED,
The steering is heavy in whichever mode you drive and complements the carbon fibre chassis. The bespoke MonoCell II-T monocoque—the T denotes Touring, which means there is a structure over the engine that also forms part of the underside for the luggage compartment—adds to the unparalleled driving dynamics and the lightest-in-class weight of 1,530 kg (DIN). To add the extra room for luggage, the engine is placed five inches below where it is in the McLaren 720S. The airflow and exhaust are placed as low as possible below the bumper. Power comes from a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine generating 620S and 630Nm, placing the car between the 570S and 720S. The McLaren GT’s acceleration figures are just 3.2 seconds from 0-100 km/h and hit a top speed of 326km/h. The suspension is a double-wishbone design in lightweight aluminium, paired with hydraulic dampers, an array of sensors and a power control unit to deliver Proactive Damping Control (PDC). Some cars are recognized for their powerful performance and design or their beauty; the McLaren falls into the latter category. Priced at $210,000, it offers a superlative visual and driving experience. The slope effect is different and stylish.

dynamic and engaging. The flip-up dihedral doors are an iconic feature of a sports car, while the above-average space and comfort are a distinctive aspect of a Grand Tourer. The 2020 McLaren GT has the best of both worlds. The interiors are all done in Nappa leather trim; you can upgrade to the softgrain luxury leather or Alcantara®. For the rear luggage bay, there’s the option of SuperFabric ®, the innovative woven fabric infused with a layer of tiny armored guard plates that provide increased resistance to stains, cuts, nicks and abrasions, as well as being breathable, easy to clean and quick to dry. Unlike most GTs or even large cars like the Camry, the McLaren GT offers about 15.5 cubic feet of space—enough to store your golf bag without any cramping. The solid composite roof is standard on the new GT. With a Panoramic Glass Roof, however, you can additionally add the privacy glass or an Electrochromic Panoramic Roof. Using an electrical charge that passes through the glass panel and acts on particles contained within, it can switch from opaque to transparent via five stages at the touch of a button. The rearview camera is placed at the driver’s console rather than on the multimedia unit in the middle. There’s a high-gloss Piano Black finish with brushed aluminium and satinsilver decorative elements on the central infotainment screen, which controls the window switches, gear-selector console and air-vent housings. Sophisticated hidden-until-lit ambient lighting also features; cold to the touch and seemingly solid metallic, subtle chrome trim highlights are embedded in the door casings and passenger side of the dashboard and glow softly once the ignition sequence is activated. Six colors can be individually selected via the central touchscreen.

Utopia IV is equipped with a digital office, so you can stay connected from anywhere in your own bubble.” To provide the safest environment, the Utopia IV team requires all crew and guests have a current negative COVID-19 test on file with the yacht prior to boarding in order to maintain a “safety bubble.” Over the summer, Utopia IV was an in-demand charter among top billionaire Wall Street titans who wanted to escape the mundaneness of home and safely quarantine at sea—with all the necessities and luxuries available to them throughout their time aboard. Utopia IV was recently reflagged as a United States vessel, honored by the United States Superyacht Association. It’s currently available for charter, sailing in the U.S., the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean. The yacht is powered by 4 MTU engines of 2600 hp. The company’s latest 115-footer “convertible,” known as Lady Nina, promises to cut your travel time in half thanks to the high-speed planing hull. Debuted at the Genoa Boat Show, this amazing superyacht is the first in Maiora’s new Exuma series and possesses the Italian yard’s signature carbonfiber construction. Both interior and exterior are designed in-house. Built for a repeat client from America, the Lady Nina instantly attracted interest with her grand stature. The spacious sofas and 70-inch concealed TV add to the grandeur of the huge sunbathing area, with access to an infinity pool with a glass backside that gives the impression that you’re swimming toward the horizon. The Lady Nina also boasts a flybridge, which is not only open for navigation in the open air but can also be closed via sliding glass to offer a special dining area. The five-meter tender is stored in the stern garage. The Lady Nina offers a luxurious interior fit for marine connoisseurs, plus an airy aft deck that spans roughly 645 square feet. The majestic boat 44 HAUTE LIVING hauteyachts.com

The best feature, however, may be the refrigerated tequila rack integrated into one of the side columns between the main salon and aft deck — that’s what you call yachting in style! The yacht also has a powerful core: three 1,925 HP Caterpillar C32 Acert engines that work together with AB Yachts, a pioneer of water jet propulsion’s two MJP steerable waterjets. Along with all this power, a central booster jet helps the yacht achieve a maximum speed of 32 knots, a cruising speed of 27 knots and coverage of some 1,600 nautical miles. COLLABORATION Hublot and Berluti take aim at the Big Bang Unico Chronograph.

Berluti has resulted in quite a few emblematic creations over the past four years. Those models had two things in common: they all featured the exquisite Venezia leather Berluti is known for and used a Hublot Classic Fusion as a base. That changes today as Hublot and Berluti introduce the Big Bang Unico Berluti Cold Brown. Hublot designed the watch in close collaboration with Kris Van Assche, creative director of Berluti. As patina is one of the Berluti trademarks, they decided to give this finishing technique center stage. They selected the vintage ‘Ice Brown’-patina but named the watch Big Bang Unico Berluti Cold Brown, most likely to avoid confusion with an older watch in the Hublot collection called Big Bang Ice. It’s based on a vintage patina and was given a modern edge with a unique glaçage application. This is not the only thing that sets the Big Bang apart. For the 46 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com
very first time, the Venezia leather is incorporated in the bezel of the watch. Just like the strap, made from the same type of leather, the patina will get richer over time. Hublot’s engineers found the perfect way to incorporate the unique leather on the dial while still allowing for a view of some of the watch’s movement. They achieved this by placing the leather between two pieces of sapphire crystal, giving the Big Bang a vibrant yet understated look. The effect is amplified by the case, made from micro-blasted and polished black ceramic. Hublot’s usual eye for detail is visible in the hands, which are filled with brown luminescent material. They perfectly complement the bezel and the Venezia leather dial, in which the indexes, numerals and even the words “Swiss Made” are embossed. Like the previous watches on which Berluti and Hublot collaborated, this is also a limited edition—only 100 will be made.

+The Chime Is Right The Patek Philippe Ref. 6301P Grande Sonnerie makes its debut.
PERFECTION OFTEN LOOKS SIMPLE, BUT IT RARELY IS.
This is the case with the new Patek Philippe Ref. 6301P Grande Sonnerie. The watch is generously sized, measuring 44.8 mm in diameter, yet rather restrained in its design. Close observation will reveal that it is rich in detail, as the platinum case has a subtle concave bezel and stunning countersunk flanks. The black dial is also a thing of beauty, made from Grand Feu enamel and fitted with gold Breguet numerals. Interestingly, the traditional gold leaf-shaped hands feature a luminescent coating. That subtle detail it gives this classic watch a slight contemporary edge while making it more practical as well. Not that it actually needs assistance being practical—if there’s one watch that keeps you on time, it’s this one. The Ref. 6301P is equipped with both a grande and a petite sonnerie. When the grande sonnerie is activated, every quarter hour, the watch will automatically chime the hour and the corresponding number of quarters. To do so, the watch has three gongs. In petite sonnerie mode, the watch only strikes the number of hours at the full hour and the quarter at the quarter hours. 48 HAUTE LIVING hautetime.com
The switch to select between the two sonnerie types and the silent mode is cleverly integrated between the lugs at 6 o’clock. The watch also has a minute repeater, activated by a pusher integrated into the crown. By turning it clockwise, you wind the movement, which has a power reserve of 72 hours; turning it counterclockwise gives the strikework enough power to run for 24 hours. Each has a power reserve indicator on the dial. The Ref. 6301P Grande Sonnerie comes with interchangeable casebacks, one solid and one fitted with a sapphire crystal. While the solid platinum one makes the watch even more of an understatement, the see-through caseback is too tempting to pass, as it shows the intricate details and superb finish of caliber GS 36-750 PS IRM. This movement is derived from caliber 300, which Patek Philippe used in the Grandmaster Chime. As this movement is wound manually, there is no obstruction to enjoying the handmade anglage or the striking mechanism. The entire movement consists of 703 parts, all working in unity to ensure that the chime is right.

RESCUE Ulysse Nardin turns plastic ocean waste into a spectacular concept watch. BY MARTIN GREEN
PHOTOS COURTESY OF ULYSSE NARDIN
ULYSSE NARDIN HAS ALWAYS HAD A STRONG CONNECTION
with the ocean, evident not only from its watches but from the events the company sponsors. It is, for example, the official timekeeper of the VendÊe Globe. In this challenging yacht race, which takes place every four years, participants sail 21,638 nautical miles (40,075 kilometers) nonstop and unassisted from start to finish. Now, Ulysse Nardin has also set up a special research unit dedicated to studying sustainable innovation for watchmaking projects. It took the first official step in October, when it introduced the R-Strap, made from recycled fishing nets. These nets are not only one of the primary sources of ocean plastic pollution, but also one of the most dangerous. Various aquatic animals can easily get caught in them and die. Now Ulysse Nardin is taking it to the next level with the introduction of the Diver Net. This concept watch has been designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The case, middle, back and bezel decorations are made from polyamide pellets. In a previous life, these pellets were discarded fishing nets and have the added advantage of being highly resistant to friction. To protect the dial and the hands, Ulysse Nardin replaced the traditional sapphire crystal with transparent ceramic glass. This takes much less energy to produce, limiting its environmental impact. The Swiss company TIDE has transformed PET plastic waste from the sea into reels of thread, which Ulysse Nardin used to make the strap. The Diver Net is powered by Ulysse Nardin’s manufacture caliber UN-118, with proprietary silicon technology. This watch is proof that there is room to make watchmaking more sustainable. At the same time, it serves as an inspiration that humanity must, and can, do better in protecting the environment. @hautetime HAUTE LIVING 49

Head to Aspen for a taste of unparalleled elegance. Thanks to venues like Matsuhisa and L’Hostaria, it’s also one of the top spots for après-ski gourmands.
MOST GLAMOROUS +THE SKI RESORTS IN AMERICA Can’t get to St. Moritz or Verbier this winter? Ski the posh pistes at home in America instead. BY LAURA SCHREFFLER
ALTHOUGH WE LOVE HITTING EUROPE’S SWISS, FRENCH AND ITALIAN ALPS, WITH TIGHT TRAVEL
restrictions, it just won’t be possible this winter. But we’re not stressing. We’ve got glamorous go-to spots like Aspen and Vail right here at home.
ASPEN There is a plethora of options at your disposal when heading to Aspen, the glitziest of ski resort towns, where you’ll no doubt be surrounded by the rich
and famous — plus four separate mountains in Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk. For easy access — and it doesn’t get easier than ski-in, ski-out — stay at the storied Little Nell, which celebrated its 30th anniversary late last year. The gorgeous property debuted a living room and
lobby renovation, by acclaimed Spanish architect Luis Bustamante, that includes a screen wall, a wood-paneled bookcase and new décor and furniture, as
well as a chic mirrored ceiling in the lobby level elevator corridor. Gone is former après-ski bar Chair 9. In its place is Wine Bar, a lounge inspired by Wally’s of Beverly Hills, Corkbuzz in New York City and Willi’s Wine Bar in Paris. This haute hotel has also relaunched its Little Nell Wine Academy. Slated for
April 11 through April 14, the theme of this year’s vino event is Old World Classics vs. American Rivals, with an emphasis on wines from Europe against West Coast favorites. Last but certainly not least, fine arts photographer Gray Malin has partnered with the Nell for a vintage ski photo shoot. His series will be on display at the Sundeck Restaurant. 675 E. Take a dip in Amangani’s 115-square-foot infiniity pool to replicate this awe-inspiring view.
JACKSON HOLE AMANGANI Those seeking health, wellness and inner peace should check into the mystical, magical Amangani this winter. It’s truly a “peaceful home” in every
sense of the word: a secluded hilltop retreat on the fringes of Grand Teton National Park, adjacent to but separate from the hustle and bustle of worldfamous ski destination Jackson Hole with its more than 100 trails. Head to the slopes to get your ski fix in while indulging in the resort’s luxurious private lounge in Teton Village at the base of Bridger Gondola, or depart on the Granite Hot Springs Adventure, a full-day guided excursion via
snowmobile or dogsled through the Wyoming winter wonderland. Know that you’ll be returning to a place of incredible beauty, with spacious suites overlooking the Snake River Valley, farm-to-table dining served fireside and a 115-square-foot infinity pool, which allows you to take a quiet, socially distant dip and breathe in the mountain air that envelopes you like a blanket. 1535 NE Butte Rd, Jackson, WY 83001
STOWE
Though there are more mountain ranges on the West Coast, East Coasters looking for sensational skiing head to Stowe for its 485 skiable acres.
PHOTO COURTESY OF ANDERSON JAMES/THE LODGE AT SPRUCE PEAK
THE LODGE AT SPRUCE PEAK While the West is widely known for its incredible runs, the East Coast shouldn’t be discounted, given that it has Stowe in its snow-covered arsenal.
Downhill and backcountry skiers as well as snowboarders fall hard for its 18 miles of ungroomed terrain and vertical drop of 2,360 feet, as well as the
state’s highest mountain, Mount Mansfield, at 4,393 feet. But where to stay? Again, there’s really only one answer, and that’s the Lodge at Spruce Peak, the only ski-in, ski-out hotel in Vermont. Located in the heart of the elevated slope-side community, this luxury property also features a members-only
club for the East Coast jet set, which has its own refined and elegant 20,000-square-foot clubhouse. Stay in one of the penthouses, which include private check-in and lounges, personal concierge services, full gourmet kitchens, private balconies, stone fireplaces, marble-finished bathrooms and floor-toceiling windows with sweeping mountain views. 7412 Mountain Rd, Stowe, VT 05672

CRESTED BUTTE SCARP RIDGE LODGE Those seeking adventure, excitement and a completely unique
experience should head to Crested Butte, which has been dubbed Colorado’s last great ski town for its European ski chalet feel and Rocky Mountain style. Eleven Experience’s flagship property in
the Elk Mountains offers the crème de la crème of skiing for those more focused on hitting the slopes than being seen off of them,
thanks to a personalized guide and zero lift lines. Each morning, a
custom-designed snowcat awaits to whisk guests to 1,000-plus acres of exclusive ski terrain in nearby Irwin, which gets an average of
450 inches of snow per year, with legendary cold-smoke powder. Private guides are available to take guests up and down the
mountain to find the deepest powder runs and wide-open alpine bowls or lead them to on-mountain cabins for movies, lunch and
après-ski. Meanwhile, Scarp Ridge Lodge is a darling blast from the past, but with all the modern amenities one could ask for. It plays
up its history as a former Croatian saloon with its old school façade but features an indoor saltwater pool, oxygen-enriched air system, steam room, sauna, gym, media room and rooftop hot tub.
For a romantic Sun Valley dining experience with a rustic, early Western atmosphere, book the Trail Creek Cabin, Originally built in 1937, this mountain-style log cabin turned restaurant sits right next to the rushing waters of Trail Creek, with a splendid view of Bald Mountain in the distance.
Private guides are available to take guests up and down the mountain to find the deepest powder runs and wide-open alpine bowls or lead them to on-mountain cabins (pictured here) for movies, lunch and après-ski.
SUN VALLEY SUN VALLEY INN In recent years, Sun Valley has gained a reputation as the top
celebrity ski spot (watch out, Aspen!), with a slew of low-key stars and billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet,
Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore, Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Bill Gates buying up property there. And it’s for a good
reason: the gorgeous resort is a good bet for a sunny ski day;
the sun shines 120 days out of 150. There are 121 trails and 2,054 skiable acres on two different mountains, which adventure
seekers adore thanks to the addition of heli-skiing. Given the
sheer amount of celebrities who head here, Sun Valley should
be totally tapped out, but it is not. It is the opposite, retaining an old-world charm that simply demands a repeat visit. For a taste of that vintage Wild West experience, book the Sun Valley Inn.
Though it opened its doors in 1937, a recent remodel means this
historic, Austrian-style ski chalet with quintessentially European décor boasts modern new additions including a steaming
outdoor pool, fitness center, new restaurants and lobby bar. 2 Sun Valley Rd, Sun Valley, ID 83353

PARK CITY
TRAVEL
MONTAGE DEER VALLEY Park City (and adjacent Deer Valley) is one of our favorite places to ski in the U.S. In addition to two major ski areas in close proximity, there are a loads of luxury resorts and a truly charming downtown area in Main Street, with all the dining (the newly opened Courchevel, named after the French ski resort, which happens to be Park
City’s sister city, is a must-try) and high-end shopping your heart desires. It’s also the home of Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival, so enough said. When you’re not busy zooming down the 300 trails on more than 7,300 acres, taking historical skiing tours of the city’s mining past or riding around in a horse-drawn sleigh, take some
time to relax at one of the truly staggering winter wonderland hotels. One of our favorite properties is the ski-in, ski-out Montage Deer Valley, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. It boasts a world-class, 35,000-square-foot alpine-inspired spa (now featuring Valmont products), the largest in Utah; a Kim Vō salon; a truly PHOTO COURTESY OF MONTAGE DEER VALLEY
amazing art collection, with both local and international pieces; and its own bowling alley and vintage arcade. There’s also a sushi restaurant, as well as the Veuve Clicquot – presented Après Lounge, which offers direct access to the Ruby, Empire and Lady Morgan ski lifts, serving up gourmet bites like caviar, local cheeses and charcuterie
alongside the stellar champagne; and, new this winter, the private Empire Lounge, complete with a cozy fireplace that lends ambiance to this private new experience for
socially distanced dining. Beyond all these offerings, this is truly one of the chicest places to lay your head after a long day on the slopes: all accommodations are arrayed
with estate-quality furnishings; original artwork; Signature Montage 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton bedding and linens; LCD televisions; five-fixture stone bathrooms with separate glass-wall showers; soaking tubs and heated floors; gas fireplaces; scenic alpine views; private balconies or patios; and turndown service with handcrafted chocolates, a homey touch that brings a little extra something to an already resplendent resort. 9100 Marsac Ave, Park City, UT 84060
Bring on the bubbly! The Montage Deer Valley’s Après Lounge is a sparkling, Veuve Clicquot-filled wonderland.
BEAVER CREEK THE RITZ-CARLTON, BACHELOR GULCH
Local elements are found throughout the RitzCarlton, Bachelor Gulch, from the activated charcoal sourced from Colorado mines used in the spa’s signature Miner’s Mineral Mud Wrap to the local ingredients and mountain-inspired cuisine at its on-site eatery, WYLD.
Colorado has some incredible terrain, and Beaver Creek is hands-down one of the best of its mountain resorts. With an average snowfall of 325 inches, 1,832 skiable acres and 150 trails, there’s more than enough to keep any skier or snowboarder
busy. For slope-side access with style, stay at the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, which,
PHOTO COURTESY OF THE RITZ-CARLTON, BACHELOR GULCH
thanks to its own chairlift, abundance of outdoor space heaters, twinkling lights and comfortable seating, offers one heck of an après-ski experience. Come to hit
the slopes, but stay for offerings like its outdoor Moët & Chandon champagne and raw bar, located mountain-side in front of a roaring outdoor fire; limitless outdoor adventures, including fresh tracks snowshoeing; a world-class, 21,000-square-foot
spa sanctuary with a heated outdoor pool and hot tubs; and, new for the 2020 – 2021 season, Sakaba, a sushi lounge serving traditional Japanese cuisine, with fresh fish flown in daily from Japan.

HEAVENLY SKI RESORT AT LAKE TAHOE
The stunning Heavenly Ski Resort at Lake Tahoe has the highest elevation, the steepest vertical drop and the most skiable acres of any ski resort on the West Coast.
EDGEWOOD TAHOE Heavenly Ski Resort is a blessed secret — 4,800 skiable acres, the most in Lake Tahoe — with a drop of 3,500 vertical feet,
which is unmatched on the West Coast, and an elevation of 10,067 feet, the highest in Lake Tahoe. With its 97 trails ranging from wide-open cruisers to plunging, 1,600-foot chutes, it’s truly designed for anyone seeking the ultimate ski experience. Those who want a hotel that rivals the awe-inspiring time they’ll have on the slopes should stay at Edgewood Tahoe, a
235-acre, LEED-certified lakefront resort with the area’s only private beach as well as an 18-hole, George Fazio–designed
championship golf course, among other luxe offerings. Edgewood offers an endless array of winter activities, from sleigh rides, ice skating and snowshoeing to the property’s signature Veuve Clicquot Champagne Chalet. The resort also offers daily morning mountain yoga programming, private Snowga sessions, signature winter spa treatments, five-star dining

TELLURIDE LUMIÈRE WITH INSPIRATO Telluride sometimes feels like an insider secret, one that
travelers return to time and time again for its over 2,000 skiable miles and devil-may-care atmosphere (this is
no joke — many skiers here thrill-seek by heli-skiing,
where they’re dropped by helicopter into the Colorado wilderness). But there’s always a place for luxury, too, and that need has been filled in spades by Lumière
with Inspirato. This award-winning property, perched 9,540 feet high, boasts a ski-in, ski-out location at the
base of Lift 4 in Mountain Village. Amenities include a hot tub, sauna, warm plunge pool and black-tie ski
services, including a ski valet with boot warmers and personalized fittings.

For some serious good luck (and don’t we all need it?), head to the Ranch’s Silver Dollar Saloon, a cowboy saloon/club that takes its name from the lucky silver dollars embedded in the bar.
THE RANCH AT ROCK CREEK Not everyone is looking for furs, diamonds and a Michelin-star meal attached to their true luxury. And when the world seems to have fallen apart,
sometimes what’s needed is wide-open space and the room to make some happy new memories. There’s no better place to do so than under Montana’s Big
Sky and at the Ranch at Rock Creek, a rustic yet oh-so-elegant five-star on 6,600 acres of rugged wilderness on the outskirts of Philipsburg. The Ranch offers

an array of rustic yet elegant accommodations, including luxury suites in the Granite Lodge, authentic log cabins and historic barn accommodations. The property also features a 2,000-square-foot spa and a 5,300-square-foot event barn. Guests can enjoy on-property snowshoeing, snowmobiling, horseback
riding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice skating and sledding, as well as trips to Discovery Ski Area, a quaint alpine ski destination located just 25 minutes away and equipped with a ski concierge available exclusively to Ranch guests. It’s a wonderful alternative for luxury travelers who want the comprehensive
Montana ski experience but still want a five-star place to stay (though if you truly want a trip to Big Sky Resort, its 5,800 acres of skiable terrain are only a three-hour jaunt away).
