f you’ve had the pleasure of meeting or knowing Swizz Beatz, it’s immediately apparent that he’s an enlightened spirit, destined for greatness. He started his career in hip-hop, where he has and continues to tell some of the most impactful stories through music. Though he humbly and gratefully recognizes the milestone of reaching one of, if not the highest milestones in any musician’s career—a Grammy win—this achievement some years ago ended up being a pivotal moment in his career for a more unexpected reason. It marked the beginning of his quasi-hiatus from the industry. As a result, he has become so much more than just a recording artist and producer. He has become the true embodiment of a serial entrepreneur by diversifying his portfolio and successfully tapping into several different spaces that shape our culture. He has most recently foraged partnerships with some of the biggest luxury brands in the world, including Bally for fashion and Zenith Watches for timepieces—both with Swiss roots dating back to the mid-1800s. He also co-founded The Dean Collection—“a contemporary, family art collection focused on the support of living artists” with his Grammy Award-winning wife, Alicia Keys. Through this platform, his artist-focused initiative No Commission was born, returning for the third time to Art Basel Miami Beach this year. But it wasn’t without the highest levels of discipline, sacrifice, hard work, vision and of course, some hard-learned lessons that allowed him to get to this point, and that continue to push him to new heights that pre-Swizz, did not even exist. One of those lessons he learned was discerning how to separate his business and personal lives, and figuring out when to say “yes” versus “no.” “Learning more and more about the business world and further educating myself is what actually showed me how to navigate certain relationships and to be cool with saying ‘no’ instead of just saying ‘yes’ because it’s the easy way to get something moving along or get something out of the way,” he notes. Some situations were less tough than others, including when he was approached with the opportunity to partner with Zenith Watches, which was, needless to say, an “easy yes.” That partnership has ended up becoming one of the brand’s most successful to date. “What first and foremost drew me to Zenith was the longevity of the brand and its 100 years of excellence, but it was also Mr. [Jean-Claude] Biver [former president of the LVMH Watch Division] and his over 40 years of experience that attracted me,” he begins. “For him to tell me that Zenith was going to
be his last hurrah and invite me to be a part of that made me really excited. I just knew we couldn’t fail because Mr. Biver and Zenith shared heritage, experience, excellence and mastery, which are all qualities that I aspire toward, as well.” Swizz was right. He and Zenith launched their DEFY Collection last year, which sold out in less than 48 hours. Impressive and unprecedented. “To go to [Baselworld] Switzerland with all of the big dogs and the amazing craftsmen, artisans, watchmakers, collectors…and for my watch to have been sold out in less than two days as a newcomer and disruptor in the industry was amazing,” recalls Swizz. “Julien [Tornare], the CEO, is really thinking outside of the box. When you see our new watch that’s coming out, it actually comes with a record player that you can play records on. We’re literally thinking outside of the box!” That new watch—his second launch with Zenith—is debuting at Art Basel Miami Beach this year, with an entry-level price point of just under $8,000—a far cry from the six-figure price point of his first Zenith project. “It’s important to have an entry-point product with quality, which is why our next DEFY Zenith watch is going to be the first e-commerce product for the brand but with one of the most impressive movements in the world. So, you can have something bada** on your wrist without spending $80,000.” Additionally, Swizz will be returning to Art Basel Miami Beach with his No Commission event, together with Bacardi. “No Commission has been such a jewel to the artists, as an extension of The Dean Collection,” he explains. “It’s such a gift to allow the artists to keep 100 percent of their sales and not have them pay for anything at all. My intention was to free the artist, because when you free the artist, you free the world.” This year, No Commission will exclusively feature photography in an event at the Faena Forum called “Take the Shot,” where even guests are exempt from paying an entry fee and where they may enjoy a free concert, along with food and beverages. Artists taking part this year include Kehinde Wiley, Derrick Adams, Todd James, KAWS, Ebony Patterson and Cleon Peterson, who also designed the cover art for Swizz’s latest album called POISON, which released just a few weeks ago. “POISON is celebrating my return back into the industry after my hiatus,” he notes. Working with some of the most talented and worldrenowned music figures, such as Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Jadakiss, Styles P, 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Jim Jones, French Montana and Nas, the 10-track body of work truly represents the renaissance of the musical Swizz Beatz, showcasing his evolved creative process in all areas of art, whether that be in music, visual arts, design or fashion. “My creative process is very simple,” he states. “I internalize what I want to create, I process what I want to create and then I deliver what I feel. But I’m always trying to compete with my younger self, create history and think 10 steps ahead, to make the world stop and pay attention. Like with the Wayne record [called “Uproar”]—that was created with purpose, but it was also free, without boundaries. It kind of just happened. My creative process is just letting it flow.” However, in the years he spent away from being full-time studio resident, Swizz realized one of his greatest accomplishments to date, which may remain unmatched for a lifetime: Kasseem Dean—as he is more formally known—graduated Harvard Business School last year, proving that education and accomplishment really show no bounds. career shortly after graduating from high school. This triumph, however, reflects much more than what it simply seems to mean at first glance. The reality is that Swizz Beatz never had anyone to show him the way to greatness, which forced him to become his own role model and to blaze a trail both for himself and for those who will come after him. “Basically I just want to show the youth that if I started in the South Bronx at a time when it was really South Bronx and then ended up graduating from Harvard, that they can now pull from my notes and read the Harvard Case Study on me to get pointers they can use in real life. I want them to know that they don’t have to be afraid to be different and to go further than what their surroundings offer,” he says, with passion. “Now that I did it, they can do it better.” As we wrap up our chat, I ask him about his legacy and what he hopes to leave behind to the generations that come after him. He pauses, chuckles and then says, “I just wanted to create a blueprint that wasn’t really a blueprint, because a blueprint is actually something with rules. I wanted to create a non-blueprint manuscript of doing whatever the f*** you love and whatever you feel that inspires you to inspire others and just take the risk.” When asked to elaborate, he continues, “Imagine driving in a car and just focusing on getting from point A to point B. But you don’t realize that in the middle of that, there’s a whole world. So now imagine that you slow that car down and you actually look at all those destinations in between. If you don’t do that, you’re just passing all of these different things that are in front of you every single day, and you’re speeding so fast that you just missed all that s***! But if you just slow the car down and really look at your surroundings, you can see the different destinations, and you can change where you stop along the way, instead of taking the predictable route that you were taught to follow when you were a kid learning to ride a bike for the first time. THE SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING EVENT OF
Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation, the Angel Ball, stands out as one of the highlights of the New York social season, and this year’s beautiful affair confirmed just that. This star-studded event boasted an audience of over 1,000 highnet-worth supporters, celebrities, influencers, executives and philanthropists at Cipriani Wall Street as they came together to support the quest for a curing cancer. This remarkable event is also known for its incredible presentation, including beautiful decor and florals. Luxury event production company Birch Event Design, along with Creative Director Josh Spiegel, took over the reins for the second year in a row with gorgeous displays of flowers and candles lighting up the room. The evening honored Dottie Herman, Douglas Elliman CEO; Monte Lipman, CoFounder and Chairman of Republic Records; Avery Lipman, Co-Founder and President of Republic Records; and Harvey Spevak, Executive Chairman and Managing Partner of Equinox. Queer Eye host Karamo Brown emceed the evening, which featured an unforgettable lineup of performances―including an acoustic set by Ashlee Simpson-Ross and Evan Ross; Grammynominated artist Julia Michaels, who performed her hits “Issues” and “Heaven.” At the end of the night, guests took the dance floor for performances by Darryl “DMC” McDaniels and

the best is good enough. This becomes clear when you look at the “Velvet,” its collection of ladies’ watches. Each is as rich as the fabric that inspired its name, combining exquisite craftsmanship, eye for detail as well as a superb movement, all in an original design. Roger Dubuis let the design take the lead with this watch. This is not something every manufacture has the luxury of doing, since complex designs also require the craftsmanship, expertise and machines to make them a reality. With its unusually shaped case, full of intricate details, the Velvet is not easy to craft, but it’s certainly worth the effort as it results in one of the most original ladies’ watches currently available. While the watches all share the same basic shape of the case, Roger Dubuis made subtle differences that give each member of the Velvet collection its own personality. The Blossom Velvet Pink features a mother-of-pearl dial in which petals are linked to each other by gold branches and highlighted by diamond-set flowers. In addition, the rose gold case is set with brilliant-cut flowers, serving as the perfect frame of this piece of horological art. The Velvet by Massaro takes a completely different approach, by putting an emphasis on the unique shape of the watch case. Crafted from white gold, it is set with brilliant-cut diamonds, which we also find on the dial. Roman numerals add a bit of classic style to this watch, while the extraordinary pleated Haute Couture strap made from leather give this Velvet loads of character. At first glance, the Secret Heart looks like the most “ordinary” member of the Velvet collection, if there is such a thing. However, it is fitted with a unique bi-retrograde jumping date complication. This raises the center of the dial slightly, adding even more depth to the design. With this watch, Roger Dubuis shows that beauty and practicality can be merged together in a single creation. Beauty is also something that goes deeper than just the outside. All watches in the Velvet collection are fitted with automatic movements that are crafted in the brand’s manufacture in Geneva. Each one wears the Geneva Seal, which is evidence of the extremely high finishing of the movements. Hublot and Richard Orlinski join forces again to launch Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski México To celebrate Mexico, luxury Swiss watch manufacturer Hublot has joined forces again with famed French sculptor, Richard Orlinski, to create a green-hued Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski México. The green coloring symbolizes hope and independence and is also a tribute to the beautiful country, as it is one of the main colors in its flag. “It’s an honor for Hublot, as we love Mexico so much, to share with friends the work of Richard Orlinski,” began Ricardo Guadalupe, Global CEO of Hublot. “[He is] an artist whose bestiary of sculptures already features the emblems marking the power of the Mexican flag—the snake and the eagle. Is this chance or fate?” The timepiece is distinctly Orlinski, with its rocky, beveled exterior and edges that reflect the light. Limited to only 30 pieces, one of the main attributes of the watch is the 12-faceted case in green ceramic. Orlinski used a three-dimensional cambering technique to achieve this aesthetic. The green, as mentioned, is one of the key colors in the Mexican flag, while other flag components are also prominently included on the timepiece. For instance, the second-hand on the dial is colored red, while the HUB1155 skeleton self-winding chronograph movement has the symbolic eagle and snake—symbolizing Earth and Heaven—as imagined by Orlinski. He also revealed a gorgeous statue, bearing the two animals, at SIAR in Mexico. “I’m delighted to have designed the new Classic Fusion Orlinski Mexico with the Hublot teams,” began the Hublot ambassador. “For me, this colorful land was a real source of inspiration and made me want to create a collection of sculptures celebrating Mexico.”

Delivered by Lürssen in 2014 and designed by Espen Oeino, KISMET remains one of the world’s most iconic superyachts and is still very much ahead of its time. Available for charter and sale for the first time with Moran Yacht & Ship, the 95.2m (13.8m beam) KISMET is a custom motor yacht outfitted to accommodate 12 guests in seven cabins (including two VIP suites), has three outdoor lounges spaces, a pool and hot tub complex that is every bit as opulent as its extravagant, highprofile passengers—Jay-Z and Beyoncé among them. KISMET is the culmination of a six-year journey, one in which the expansion of Khan’s wealth and influence also coincided with a need to accommodate a growing, adrenaline-fueled constituency. Unlike the first KISMET, however, 68m wasn’t enough. According to the story, Khan’s design brief contained three words: “make it impressive.” And impressive it is. KISMET comes with its very own cinema, a full-service spa, indoor/outdoor dining spaces for 12 (bar included) and a formal interior dining room with a staircase that leads to the ballroom (as one would expect). Vision is the key, as Callahan explains: “Owner requirements certainly dictate concepts and design. The majority of owners that we work with have either chartered or owned other vessels and base their requirements on previous experience. This is the main factor that drives their concept and design … The amount of detail and thought that went into building [KISMET] is honestly incredible.” Spread out over five decks, the Reymond Langton-designed “Champagne & Caviar” interior concept features a doubleheight main salon spanning the main and upper deck aft via a sweeping staircase perfect for nightcaps, morning joe or corporate entertaining. Cruising at 14 knots and a maximum speed of 17 knots, KISMET can effortlessly reach 6,000 nautical miles from 220,000 fuel tanks. KISMET’s availability comes at a time when yacht builders and brokers are riding the wave of increased sales. But in an industry that’s seen its share of challenges, Callahan is quick to point out that Moran Yacht & Ship’s approach to luxury shipping―making expertly crafted luxury experiences integral to its state-of-the-art attention to detail―is why the brand has loomed large in the minds of yachting enthusiasts for nearly three decades. “While there have been some market gyrations recently, we continue to be optimistic on all fronts [sales, charter, new construction],” he says. “As a testament to this, we have recently signed a 116m new build project called Project TESTAROSSA.”

Furthermore, the trend toward eco-friendly technology onboard superyachts has not been lost. As the UConn School of Business grad proudly notes regarding the Ken Freivokhdesigned 106m Oceanco BLACK PEARL, “The concept was to create one of the world’s most technologically advanced superyachts offering true zero-emissions cruising— virtually unheard of, especially for a yacht of her size. I think we will continue to see more advancement on this front, since the environment and seeking its natural beauty is a cornerstone of yachting.” Moran Yacht & Ship currently has eight projects in progress ranging from 64m to 142m. In 2018 alone, the firm signed 109m, 116m and 118m projects. Due for delivery next year is the 95m Lürssen Project FIJI. Honda Aircraft Company’s launch of the HondaJet Elite has been extraordinary; the response, overwhelming. But there’s more to the Ferragamo stiletto-inspired HA-420 upgrade. With a travel range of 1,437 nautical miles and a maximum speed of 485 mph, the HondaJet Elite reaches an altitude of 8,000 feet, maxing out at 43,000 feet. Haute Living (HL): HondaJet Elite is the most-delivered luxury light jet in its class. Why? Michimasa Fujino (MF): When I set out to design a business jet, I wanted to create new value in the aviation industry by providing users with the most-advanced technologies such as state-of-the-art aerodynamics and composite structure. The HondaJet is a clean sheet design and the result of years of aeronautical research. Our meticulous attention to detail, design and engineering offer customers the best performance, efficiency and comfort in its class. Also, dedication to bettering the industry and to improving the lives of our customers accounts for the HondaJet’s success. HL: Are we seeing a transition from luxury large cabin jets to lighter luxury aircraft? MF: There has been an increase in interest in more efficient business jet travel options. For example, the majority of business jet usage is less than 1,000 nautical miles. If you are traveling with a few passengers, it’s more practical and efficient to use a light jet rather than a large cabin jet. The HondaJet is as high performance and comfortable as a large cabin jet, but is also much more efficient and appealing to not only individual owners but also fleet and charter operators. HL: How has HondaJet Elite’s success translated in the global market? MF: Due to the innovation and technology implemented on the HondaJet, interest in the aircraft in the Middle East, which is not
generally a light jet market, is rapidly increasing. It is a more efficient option and is perfect for city pairs within GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council], has a sporty look and is attractive to the region. In Asia, the Honda brand is very strong, which has created a lot of brand recognition across the region. Commitment to innovation and technology are all contributing factors to Asia’s interest for both individual and fleet sales. The Middle East and Asia are both new areas of growth for the HondaJet. While sales in the U.S. remain strong, interest in these regions provides us with the opportunity to increase awareness of the benefits of light jets and to expand sales and service of the HondaJet. HL: What would be the key differences between HondaJet Elite buyers and large or mid-sized jet buyers? MF: Buyers in the light-jet market are often owner-operators who are interested in personal and business use; those buying light jets are usually looking for a more efficient way of regional travel, including access to smaller airports. And purchasers of light jets may be looking to lessen their impact on the environment while also enjoying the benefits of private air travel. HL: Are there any technological innovations that you would like to bring to the market? MF: We are always looking for ways to improve personal mobility through technological innovation. Our goal is to continue to create new value in the industry, and we are constantly working on new technologies such as advanced aerodynamics, new structural material, automation and advanced controls. The new trend in the industry is teams,” Daniel de la Vega said. “Make sure as you grow your team, you surround yourself with good people, people that know more than you, and this will allow you to grow successfully.”

The panel focused on the current state of the market, with the fear of an upcoming dip in the market due to the oversaturation of product. While each panelist agreed that it is hard to generalize each market with a yes or no answer to that, most agreed it is how you handle and pitch the ups and downs of the market to your client. “It is not a buyer’s market or a seller’s market. It’s an opportunity market,” Olivia Hsu Decker said. All power brokers agreed the importance of an honest and transparent communication with clients, no matter the state of the market. “When you are discussing the market with your client, you need to turn all negatives into positives,” Richard Steinberg said. “Any agent who will tell you the market is robust and wonderful at all times, I find hard to believe.” 86 HAUTE LIVING hauteresidence.com

Social influencer Adamari Lopez, who frequently showcases her young daughter on her Instagram account @adamarilopez, had fun with the CYBEX for Scuderia Ferrari products, testing out the strollers and the baby carrier in both the black and the offwhite color versions. Entrepreneur and television superstar Angela Simmons—also a young mother with a 2-year-old baby boy—took a test drive of the products as well and posed in front of various Ferrari models on the showroom floor. The event paid special tribute to Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade for his immense impact on the city of Miami over the years. Hublot partnered in the high-profile affair. Members of the list arrived to a lust-worthy lineup of exotic supercars on display outside from Prestige Imports/Lamborghini Miami. Inside, guests were whisked into the stunning new restaurant meticulously designed by Ken Fulk for Groot Hospitality. Guests enjoyed signature dishes prepared by Executive Chef Jean Imbert, as well as specialty cocktails from Absolut Elyx. Haute Living and artist Jordi Mollà presented Wade with a custom painting to commemorate the evening.

In honor of Art Basel Miami Beach 2018, we take a look at the importance of art and some of my personal favorite artists. BY DANIEL BOULUD

AS WE GATHER FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF
the amazing Art Basel festival―an especially exciting time for me to be in Miami―I’m reminded of how my roots and appreciation for art first formed. Artists and chefs have always had a symbiotic relationship. The first one happened for me while working under the talented Roger Vergé in Mougins, France. At the time, I was just a teenager, and he was constantly surrounded by great artists from L’École de Nice, many of whom he was lucky enough to call his friends. While I could not afford their work at the time, I appreciated being exposed to their craft as they often drew inspiration from the culinary world, sharing in that same passion for creation. From there, my love for figurative, contemporary and classic art followed me to Copenhagen, Washington and ultimately, New York City. When I opened DANIEL 25 years ago in Les Pleiades, the Upper East Side was the mecca for New York City’s art elite― all major galleries were within walking distance. At this point, I began immersing myself in the local art scene. Leo Castelli, a reputable art dealer who was at the forefront of surrealist, abstract and pop art, would come in for lunch every day with a different artist. I remember a party that was held in his honor where the greatest concentration of living contemporary American artists came to celebrate the most renowned gallery owner in the world. The cluster of artists― from Jeff Koons and Willem de Kooning to Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, James Rosenquist and many more―left me with a desire to showcase their craft and collect art. Most of the featured artwork in my restaurants has been commissioned by artists. Fifteen years ago, my friend Lisa Mamounas introduced me to Brazilian artist
and photographer Vik Muniz. I was invited to a party at his home studio in Brooklyn. Vik had a theory that after every great gathering, what remained on the table were wine stains, thereby marking the engaging conversation and enjoyment that was had around the table. Three parties, dozens of people and 85 bottles of the greatest vintages from the greatest winemakers later, the artwork for Bar Boulud came to life. The final result was 25 different stains, with each vintage lending a different shade of red. For the artwork at DANIEL, I wanted something modern and classic. Inspired by “Las Meninas” from Diego Velázquez, Manolo Valdés studied the dining room and created beautiful collages of his work that have an aesthetic that is both contemporary and timeless. My appreciation for the arts extends to my children, as well. It began with my eldest daughter on her 16th birthday. I bought her a painting by Aaron Parazette, where he used elongated typography, depth and color to spell out the word “COOL,” an adjective I felt described my daughter perfectly! I plan to do the same for my two younger children so they receive something meaningful and can begin building their own collections. My son Julien is already the proud owner of a turtle by Andy Warhol. Although I can be artistic in my own way, as chefs what we create on a plate is ephemeral, while an artist’s work is made to sustain time. A few years ago, Vik gave me a truly amazing gift: a mosaic of myself at the 72 nd Street subway station in the Upper East Side. Standing with a shopping bag from the market, this installation will remain a part of the fabric of New York, my adopted home, and that is the power of art for me.

Honoring that legacy this season, the Baccarat Hotel in New York has created a tea service as it might have been taken place in palaces from St. Petersburg to Bangalore. By pairing its menus with world-renowned Mariage Frères teas, Baccarat seeks to evoke a feeling and ambiance of a distant land by bringing these imaginary journeys to life. This holiday, Baccarat has created two seasonal tea offerings including the Le Petit Prince, a children’s tea, and the ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, a holiday tea. Le Petit Prince is a tea experience inspired by the famous children’s novella The Little Prince, first published in April 1943 and voted the best book of the 20th century in France. It is the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de SaintExupéry. The main theme is best conveyed through the secret the fox tells the Little Prince: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly: what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Items served with the tea (peppermint tea is recommended) include banana bread with cream cheese and caramelized banana; peppermint meringue; a spiced cupcake; a cranberry muffin with dried cherries and orange; Napoleon of pears and brie; a chocolate brownie tree; a speculoos snowflake; and a copy of The Little Prince. According to legend, “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” was composed by Clement Moore on a sleigh ride during a snowy winter’s day. The classic poem has been largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-19th century to today and has had a tremendous impact on the history of Christmas gift-giving. With this tea offering, guests will enjoy delicious savory items including croque-monsieur gruyere; holiday stuffing with apple and walnut; roasted turkey with pain de mie and plum jam; and foie gras with almond financier and fig. Sweets include spice chocolate cherry bûche de noël; sugar plum cake; and rose macaron. It is recommended to pair any of the above with the Alexandra David-Néel tea. In addition to the tea menu items, the Baccarat is also showcasing two specialty seasonal cocktails: the L’Abricot Sour and the G.Smith. The first is a delicious “cognac sour” with equal parts Remy Martin 1738, XO, Louis XIII and L’Abricot du Roulot liqueur as the base. Lemon juice balances out the sweetness, and the Angostura adds depth and complexity with subtle spice notes. The egg white gives the drink texture and a frothy mouthfeel as the taste buds experience the subtle spice, the sweet and the sour. The house-made apricot bitters (apricots/ apricot green tea) are aged with oak for over one year onsite. The second, the G.Smith, also known as the Grandpa Smith, is a very refreshing spiced green apple cider cocktail. Grandpa Smith is inspired by fresh Granny Smith apple juice and Granny Smith apple liqueur. This drink is spiced with clove agave, green cardamom and cinnamon with quinoa vodka serving as its base.
