We also preview the upcoming yachting season in the Mediterranean and travel to Tuscany to talk to Alessia Antinori, who has lived in New York, where she not only learned about the American consumer market, so vital to her family’s 600-year-plus wine business, but she also indulged her passion for contemporary art. It’s an interest that’s turned into an important initiative, the Antinori Art Project, which Alessia now spearheads. We also take a look at jewels as investments, the latest fashion and accessories must-haves, and are extremely pleased to have had the chance to speak with Alain Bernard, Van Cleef & Arpels CEO and president of Americas, about the luxury market. ENGLISH COUSINS What to know about the Jaguar F-Type SVR and Range Rover Evoque Convertible

of their many decades of independence, that one day they would be joined (corporately speaking) under a single owner…and that the owner bringing them together would be India’s Tata Motors? But that’s what happened in 2008, after each of the brands had tried different corporate betrothals (most recently, Jaguar was part of Ford, and Land Rover was part of BMW until Ford bought Land Rover, too, in 2000). From my vantage point, they should be singing, “We’re united and it feels so good” since presumably each company can leverage the engineering achievements of the other, producing even better cars than before. Let’s start with the fast cat, the Jaguar F-Type SVR. It has a ton of power (try 575 on for size), a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour, and acceleration that can easily get you

”
The F-Type burst onto the U.S. motoring scene in 2013 and, smartly, it was offered with a wide array of options, including motors with a big spread of power choices. The F-Type came in both convertible (first) and, soon thereafter, coupe, and then had the “R” variants, with more horsepower—500 in the convertible, 550 in the coupe. And now the SVR (the top-performance moniker from Jaguar’s skunkworks Special Vehicle Operations unit) has done it one better, upping both the power and the top speed. And while I thought that, after borrowing the prior F-Types and even spending a day at the track with the F-Type R Coupe, it was as good as it gets, the SVR moves the bar even higher. Aside from its stunning good looks and impressive performance, this car is luxurious. A killer sound system adds to the pleasure, if you can stand to interfere with the arias being created by the power plant. And it even comes in

variant is a ton of fun to drive! With two basic models—the SE and the HSE (the later has a base price of $57,700)—all convertibles have the same four-cylinder powerplant with 240 horsepower and 250 pounds of torque coupled to a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. There’s one metric, especially in Los Angeles, by which the Range Rover Evoque Convertible is hard to beat: stares per mile. Whether in infotainment screen, which both locks the glove box and also turns off the sound system. Not since Corvette offered an in-car video monitoring system has a manufacturer better thwarted the efforts of Ferris Bueller’s nemeses. Faithful readers will recall my great love for the F-Types when first announced, and I remain a big fan. For a car with a base price starting at about $61,000 for the least-expensive coupe, the SVR is a big jump as it tips the scales with a base price of about $126,000. Is it worth it? Get in, fire

it up, and then decide. If you’re a petroholic like some of us, just the sound upon its awakening is worth the price of admission. ow let’s look at the off-road cousin, Land Rover. The company has broadened its output so that, as of today, they create a number of vehicles that are sold in the U.S.: The Land Rover Discovery Sport is the least-expensive model, starting at about $38,000. Moving upward in the line, we find the Land Rover
Discovery, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover, which also has a variety of variants—the SVAutobiography and the ultimate Holland and Holland, a very customized version of the Range Rover Black, which features gorgeous leathers and tooled metalwork, reminiscent of the
Beverly Hills or Newport Beach, the drop top is a real head-turner. One valet literally moved a Rolls-Royce (one of three parked in front of the restaurant) to give the convertible center stage. When we returned to the car after dinner, the valet said that he’d never seen so much interest in a car, and he regularly hosts the most exotic of cars from anywhere. So while the Evoque Convertible is a fun, well-priced car, it’s also very technologically advanced. It uses a sophisticated power-and-brake management system called “Torque Vectoring by Braking”, which is especially useful off-road. There are also driver-control programs for driving on low-friction surfaces, up and down hills and the like. The infotainment system, with its 10-inch touchscreen, is great, and the Meridian sound system works terrifically—10 speakers plus a subwoofer. With the four-banger engine, you will not win many Stop Light Grand Prixs, but its performance is sprightly and it’s a lot of fun to drive. I really didn’t want to give it back (but they made me). Given that my typical daily diet includes at least 500HP, the Evoque Convertible was a surprising delight.
The Evoque droptop is a real headturner, even achieving front-row status at valet stands
finest shooting guns ever made (and, at a starting price of about $225,000, that level of luxury seems appropriate). But I digress—today’s topic is the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, a bundle of joy with a base price of $52,000. You may have seen the Evoque before, as that model hit the road a few years ago. With a jaunty hat placed akimbo, the roofline drops noticeably from front to back. This swagger for the normally sedate (and much more rectangular) Land Rover family gave the Evoque a street strut that endeared it in the hearts of youngsters and the young at heart. And adding this year’s drop top to the mix further youthifies the brand—the convertible

A NEW SPIRIT IN A STARRING ROLE
Producer and director Brett Ratner’s sleek whiskey blend comes to New York.
H
ollywood has long had a fascination with food, wine and spirits. And not just for the for their Oscar bash. Francis Ford Coppola made a big name for himself in the movies but has also earned kudos in the wine business for his Napa Valley vintages. Actor
Robert De Niro, of course, is a hospitality mogul with a string of restaurants and hotels around the world. George Clooney has his Casamigos Tequila. Now producer and director Brett Ratner (The Revenant, X-Men) has joined his hospitality-minded confreres with the introduction of the Hilhaven Lodge, a premium whiskey blend created with liquor-industry powerhouse Diageo, which has been in the works for the past eight years. “There was no rush,” says Ratner of the extended development process. “It was all about getting the blend right.” The whiskey was named after Ratner’s home, the Hilhaven Lodge, a legendary Hollywood property with a deep celebrity pedigree—Ingrid Bergman, Kim Novak, and producer Allan Carr have all lived and entertained there. The right blend, as Ratner describes it, combines aged Bourbon, rye, and Tennessee Whiskey from three different decades. Doug Kragel, whiskey educator for Diageo Reserve Portfolio, says the whiskey, being 80 proof, is “approachable” for those who aren’t whiskey drinkers. “I recommend trying it in a signature cocktail like the Hilhaven Lodge Old Fashioned or the Hilhaven Lodge Highball.” [See recipes at right.] He says the Old Fashioned is one of his favorite drinks, “with just the right amount of sweetness to complement the Hilhaven Lodge’s unique blend. I always advise folks to first try the Hilhaven Lodge straight, but a well-mixed cocktail can’t be missed.” The Hilhaven Lodge is available at top restaurants and lounges in New York including Megu and Beautique, Carbone, Nobu 57, TAO + TAO Downtown, and the Mandarin Oriental.

increased 9.09 percent. This trend persisted in Queens, where luxury rents dropped almost 2 percent, and non-luxury rents rose just over 8 percent,

The softening rental market may be attributed to simple supply and demand. According to the Times, 11,514 new rental units came on the market in Manhattan and Brooklyn in 2016. An additional 13,340 are planned for 2017. In recent years, developers catering to the luxury sector focused on creating rental buildings with lavish amenities, such as pet spas, entertainment rooms, and gyms. With an oversupply of product on the market, renters can now be choosy. Another factor in the softening of the top end of the market is availability of better-quality “low rentals,” according to Maria Velazquez, an agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “In recent years, we have seen a number of developers make the move to the Financial District and Brooklyn, where they can offer a great product for a more competitive price,” she says, pointing out that while the market is very segmented, “it will always cater to the demand for both non-luxury and luxury rentals.” Because of the extra choice among high-end rentals, landlords are offer-

THANKS TO THE BUZZY SHOWTIME SERIES BILLIONS, MALIN AKERMAN, WHO FIRST EARNED her stripes in comedies (The Proposal, The Heartbreak Kid), is seeing her star glow ever brighter in Hollywood. As the tough-talking Lara Axelrod, wife of billionaire Bobby Axelrod (played by Damian Lewis), she is reinventing the role of rich spouse, depicting a character who is neither traditional trophy wife nor power babe. Akerman talks about how she drew on her own background to create a new archetype for Lara—a modern, high-low take on the working-class gal who made good. Here, she reveals how she and Lara are alike (and not) and how she keeps grounded while enjoying new levels of fame. How are you and the character you play, Lara Axelrod, similar—or different? We are definitely different in the way we go about things! I don’t threaten people. She’s unapologetic, and there are times when I wish I could be more like her. But it is so much fun to live vicariously through her. Where we are similar is that we both come from humble beginnings—Lara finds herself in this new world of hedge funds and billionaires. For me, it was the new world of Hollywood; I can relate to that, how she brought her street smarts and survival skills to get through it. We are connected in how we share the same core values, especially about family. If anyone threatened my family, I feel I could get as feisty as Lara. I could kill for my family. That is where we are very similar. 51

these days is for my son and from Amazon. I like the website therealreal.com. The clothes are on consignment at amazing prices for such high-priced labels. If I’m giving myself a gift, maybe something from Yves St. Laurent, cool stuff with fringes. I’m obsessed with shoes. I like boots with buckles to funk up an outfit. I’m not married to labels—I like Free People. It’s more about finding the right style and something with an edge to it. And the red carpet? If I borrow for an event, then a dress from Alexander McQueen, because the pieces are structured, artistic, and beautiful. What I love about Molly Fishkin (Akerman’s frequent stylist) is how she brings in designers like The Row or Cushnie et Ochs. She’s creative, has a fresh outlook, is willing to try up-and-coming designers, and knows that if it has the right fit and right vibe, it will work for me. What are you reading now? How to Raise an Adult. The book compares raising kids 30 years ago with today, and talks about the positive and negative effects of helicopter parenting. It shows how kids are not becoming adults, but rather staying in teenage versions of themselves. (The book interested me) because I studied child psychology—that is what I thought I would pursue. I want to raise my son in a conscientious and independent way. Is finding a school in L.A. as competitive as it is in New York? I am feeling overwhelmed by the process of getting my son

into the right school, and I am just beginning that process. When I was young, I just went to the local public school and it worked. My main concern is finding a school where the kids are treated as individuals and are helped to develop as independent thinkers. What charities are you involved with? I’ve been working with Opportunity International for the past decade. It’s a microfinancing organization that focuses on women. I’ve visited Africa and Nicaragua to see how they have empowered women to help build schools, pave roads, provide running water to their homes, and help end cycles of poverty. It’s a group making waves around the world. Besides Billions, what other projects are in the works for 2017? I have an indie film, The Ticket, coming out in April, which also stars Dan Stevens, and just signed for the movie Rampage with The Rock and Naomie Harris. And I am looking at a few other projects before I start Billions again.

Alessia Antinori—who with her sisters are the first women to run their family’s legendary winery in its 632-year-old history—looks to art, native varietals, and girl-power marketing to keep the legacy brand on top of its game.

he woman’s role in our business, especially in Italy in the past, was something that was considered unattainable,” says Alessia Antinori, who with her sisters Albiera and Allegra are the heirs to Marchesi Antinori, one of the oldest wineries in the world, and its first female management team in the company’s storied history. And it might have remained out of reach for this generation of Antinori women, except for a twist of fate and a father who saw possibilities for his young daughters, even though he was reluctant to impose his hopes for continuity upon them. Since its founding in 1385 (yes, in the 1300s), the ownership of the
considering the Antinori winery, which started in the Middle Ages, has survived in a country that has endured countless invasions and two devastating World Wars. Historically, most businesses, even those launched during robust peacetime economies, never make it beyond the first decade. Despite the travails, Marchesi Antinori not only endured but thrived. In the past 50 years, Piero, the Antinori sisters’ father, had brought the famed winery even greater renown, reviving Chianti Classico and introducing a new category of wine, the Bordeaux-like Super Tuscans in the 1970s. Yet for all his success, Piero was faced with a challenge his ancestors, over the course of six centuries, never had: There were no sons to carry on the business. While primogeniture isn’t a factor in Italy—no distant cousin stood in the wings to inherit the estates—the country’s wine sector had always been a tight-knit male club, unlike the fashion world where women had long played prominent roles (e.g., Rosita Missoni, Wanda Ferragamo, Mariuccia Manelli at Krizia).

dent, but he remains involved in the business), Albiera, who holds the title of president, and Alessia and Allegra, both of whom are vice presidents, along with the company’s CEO, Renzo Cotarella, began running the day-to-day operations of the company, which produces more than 11 million bottles of wine a year. Now immersed in their careers at the winery, Alessia says that female leadership has had a meaningful impact on the company’s 21st-century strategies. “We brought fresh points of view to marketing and sales,” she says, something all legacy companies need, but particularly those in the wine business, where women now make more wine purchases than men (according to the Wine Institute, approximately 57 percent of sales in the U.S.). Alessia notes that the female perspective is playing out in other areas of the business too, including the critical area of tasting. When judging the viability of a vintage, “the female palate can be incredibly precise,” she says. Alessia Antinori lived in New York for several years to better learn the U.S. market and to cultivate her interest in contemporary art.
And while women had begun to make great professional strides in the U.S. and the UK, progress moved at a slower pace in southern European countries. In 1981, concerned that an Antinori wouldn’t be at the helm when he retired, Piero even sold a chunk of it to Whitbread, the UK’s largest hospitality company. But when the Whitbread and Antinori merger didn’t go as smoothly as planned—the cultures didn’t mesh—Piero looked

When the resoluteness pays off, the result is always a “unique” bottle of wine, she says. and her sisters will also look to develop more white wines. “Now, more than ever, consumers are interested in them,” she says. One area of the family business that Alessia has claimed for herself is the Antinori Art Project, which like the winery itself draws on the company’s long history—in this case its collection of fine and decorative art (part of which is now housed at the Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Cellar in Bargino)—while leveraging that heritage to nurture contemporary talents. “We have always been involved in art, because as Florentines we have always been surrounded by great examples of it,” Alessia says. “So our connection to and support of the arts has been very natural to us.” The Antinori arts initiative, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, has developed partnerships with contemporary artists like Rosa Barba, known for her cinematic art installations; Jean-Baptiste Decavèle, a French multimedia artist; and Tomás Saraceno, whose work includes interactive installations and floating

21 CLUB, PHILIP PRATT Celebrating a milestone 21 years at the 21 Club in May, Philip Pratt, its wine director and sommelier, has overseen a program that won the Wine Spectator Grand Award from 2003 to 2016. What makes the wine and champagne collection at 21 competitive for an iconic New York venue? PP: When people come to New York, they expect the best of the world to be here; 21 embraces that theme. Our list includes the best wines and champagnes from around the world—not only wines from the best areas by the best producers but also wines that have age and development. When we look at newer regions, we try to offer the best examples of wines coming from them.

The wines are the perfect blending of New World fruit and Old World earthiness. If any region will challenge Burgundy, it will be New Zealand. What you’re drinking: PP: Lately I’m trending toward Old World wines. I used to say Pinot Noir, but when I emptied out my cork bucket at home, I found more Old World wines like Bordeaux, Rioja, and Tuscany. Trends in wine and champagne for 2017: PP: Less oak in Chardonnay, fewer corked bottles, and even better quality from everywhere.

The Frick held its annual Young Fellows Ball, now in its 18th year and one of the most widely covered events of the New York social season. This year’s posh fete, in partnership with Carolina Herrera, was called Turner by Moonlight. From his haven in the hills to his Hilhaven on the rocks, not many would disagree that Brett Ratner knows how to perfect his “craft.” In mid-March, Megu’s modern-day Shangri-la played host to the Hublot x Hilhaven-hosted Haute Living cover release party celebrating the director-turned-distiller in proper (old) fashion. The evening kicked off with a private cocktail reception showcasing signature cocktails such as The Hilhaven Lodge (THL) Highball, THL Rocks, and its namesake Old Fashioned. Shortly thereafter, guests sat down to a three-course culinary experience courtesy of famed chef Frances Tariga-Weshnak. The guest list ran anything but dry as VIPs including Alonzo Mourning, Sinqua Walls, Harvey Spevak, Rohan Marley, Ronnie Madra, and Bradley Theodore came to toast the occasion. Mid-dinner, Haute Living Publishers Kamal Hotchandani and Seth Semilof, alongside Hublot Sponsoring and Events Director Capucine Huard, honored Ratner. Artist Shawn Kolodny commemorated the evening with a 40 × 30 acrylic and resin mixed-media piece. Made in partnership with Diageo, Hilhaven Lodge whiskey was named for the 1927 Beverly Hills estate that Ratner now owns. The sophisticated blend is made from three distinct decades of premium whiskeys. A lover of all things vintage, Ratner’s palate is “proof” he likes his whiskey just as he likes his home: aged to perfection.

The LuxuryBEAT
BY CATHERINE SABINO
BEYOND THE SPARKLE Alain Bernard, president and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels Americas, talks about why his company looks for gems with soul, the new interest in custom engagement rings, and what he finds luxurious in New York. What trends in gems for your high jewelry collections are you seeing with your customers? As you know, high jewelry is not fashion. Timeless design doesn’t give way to trends, and colors don’t change every season. We’re not seeing any particular trends for stones, however, there is a greater demand for pieces of extraordinary quality and craftsmanship. Clients are looking for real value and pieces that have meaning for them—and ones that are versatile. So more of an interest in multitasking pieces? Yes—we are seeing an increased interest in them. Van Cleef & Arpels is known for its convertible pieces, like the Zip Necklace developed between 1938 and 1951. It can be worn as a necklace or a bracelet. Alain Bernard, president and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels Americas
Van Cleef & Arpels is renowned for its experworking with and finding this stone today? EMERALD POWER Above: Grand Opus transformable earrings and clip from the Van Cleef & Arperls “Emeraude en Majesté” collection.
Our Emeraude en Majesté collection took us 10 years to source. We acquired around 1,400 carats of emeralds for it. We look not only for stones of perfect quality but also gems that have “soul” or a personality that is right for us. Our experts are stone specialists who have worked with us for decades, who have seen the most beautiful and fascinating rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. They know what is a Van Cleef & Arpels gem and what is not. How are you introducing the next major generation of customers, the millennials, to the Van Cleef & Arpels experience? E-commerce has become important for us, but each digital engagement is undertaken with the same mind-set and expression of our identity as our initiatives in print. We want every post to have relevance and meaning and be informative and entertaining. For us it’s not about quantity and more about engagement. The human element is at the center of everything for
