AREA AND CLIMATE Aruba is 19.6 miles (30 km) long and 6 miles (10 km) across at its widest point, totaling 77 square miles (193 sq. km). Outside the hurricane belt, the island has an average yearly temperature of 84° F/ 29° C, tempered by northeasterly trade winds. LOCATION Aruba lies 15 miles (24 km) north of Venezuela and 890 nautical miles from the equator, at 12 degrees 30’ north latitude and 69 degrees 58’ west longitude. TIME ZONE Atlantic Standard Time year-round (equivalent to Eastern Daylight Savings Time).

CURRENCY Aruba’s currency is the florin, denoted by the letters “AWG” but also “AFL.” U.S. dollars are widely accepted and many banks exchange other foreign currency as well. Traveler’s checks are also widely accepted and there is no charge for using them in hotels, stores and restaurants. Major credit cards (Visa, MC, Discover & Amex) are accepted at most establishments. ELECTRICAL POWER 110/220 volts (same as the United States). DRINKING WATER Aruba’s tap water is safe to drink. In a restaurant ask specifically if you want tap water or bottled.

GASOLINE STATIONS Gas pumps for your rental car register in liters: 1.06 quarts to 1 liter. Prices at gas stations are in Aruban florins converted at AFL 1.75 to US$1.00. Gas stations offer full service pumps where attendants fill up your tank or you can choose for a self-service pump. At a self-service pump you must first pay inside (a certain amount or request for a complete fill-up) before filling up your tank. All gasoline stations in Aruba sell exclusively unleaded gasoline and gas-oil (diesel).

TAXIS are also widely available, though you do not typically hail a cab in Aruba. You should call ahead to make arrangements or check in your hotel for available taxis. Also, taxis do not have meters. Instead, you pay a fixed rate set by government regulations. Prices are based on distance with a maximum capacity of five (5) passengers per taxi; On official holidays and after midnight an additional charge to the regular rate is applicable. RULES OF THE ROAD • Always keep right, passing on the left. • Use turning signals, also at roundabouts.

• Speed limit in urban areas is 30 km/h (18 m/h).

• Speed limit out of town is 60 km/h (37 m/h) and on faster roads it’s 80 km/h (50 m/h). • Right side has the right of way (unless road signs say different).

• Traffic on the roundabout has the right of way and drivers entering the circles must wait for an opening. • Vehicles have priority over nonmotorized vehicles. Be careful on a bicycle since most drivers are not used to having bicycles riding around.

ALTO VISTA CHAPEL

The picturesque Chapel of Alto Vista was the island’s first Roman Catholic Church, built in 1750 and reconstructed in 1953. The small, bright yellow chapel is reached by a winding road, lined with white crosses marking the Stations of the Cross.

CASIBARI ROCK FORMATIONS

Casibari’s huge tonalite boulders sit together in an area just north of Hooiberg. This rock formation rises up from the desert soil to create an unusual setting and spectacular photo opportunities. Some of the boulders weigh several tons and feature peculiar forms. The Government of Aruba has created walking trails and steps through the boulders, allowing hikers to reach the top to obtain breathtaking views of the island.

CALIFORNIA LIGHTHOUSE

Found on the north side of the island, the hilltop landmark was built in 1914 to warn ships nearing Aruba. Also known as “Hudishibana,” it was named after an American steamship that wrecked off the shore in the late 1800s. The lighthouse was completely renovated in 2018 and is in operation today. It opened up for visitors again, the views are stunning and it is a great place to watch the Caribbean sunset.

In the 1400s and 1500s, adventurers traveled throughout the Caribbean in search of wealth and treasure. According to legend, Aruba’s name comes from “Oro Ruba,” which means “red gold.” In 1824, gold was finally discovered in Aruba, and the industry produced more than 3 million pounds of gold. Today, remnants of this history can be seen at places such as the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins on the northern coast. The abandoned gold mill once processed ore from mines in the nearby hills during Aruba’s gold rush of the 19th century.

The Butterfly Farm offers exceptional views of countless varieties of winged wonders, with educational exhibits on the miracle of metamorphosis and great photo ops. This lovingly tended tropical garden is a lush Eden filled with colorful butterflies from all around the world.

Bridge

For thousands of years, pounding waves and strong winds have slowly chiseled away at the limestone cliffs along Aruba’s north coast to create several natural bridges. The largest used to be the famous Natural Bridge, which collapsed on September 2, 2005. Despite this, it is still the most photographed natural bridge and it remains a tourist attraction in Aruba, with the adjacent intact Baby Bridge also meriting a visit.

1. FORMER NATURAL BRIDGE The natural arch (as it used to be), measuring approximately 25 feet (7.6 m) high and 100 feet (30 m) long, was the remnant of an ancient cave.

COLLAPSED NATURAL BRIDGE Since the collapsed bridge is now blocking the ocean from the beach, magnificent views of the waves bursting against the rocks can be seen from the bay behind the ruins of the bridge. 3. WORTH A VISIT The beautiful building at the Natural Bridge has an Aruba country home look and feel, which is typical of the old-style homes on the island. The interior includes state-of-the-art restrooms, a nice bar, gift shop and sitting areas. One of the most unique features are the panoramic views to the ocean and the surrounding hills right from the sitting areas which are created by a series of big windows. The view is second to none. This is also one of the reasons the Natural Bridge is the most unique location for a private event. 4. LOCAL SNACKS AND BEVERAGES Taste delicious Pastechis (local snack), fresh made Dutch waffles from two thin layers of baked dough with a caramel syrup filling in the middle, fluffy Poffertjes (mini pancakes) and sandwiches. The bar includes a wide selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages.

5. THE GIFT SHOP Offers unique souvenirs and the very popular Biba Dushi and Aruba Rescue lines of apparel. The bar includes a wide selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, snacks, sandwiches and ice cream. The Natural Bridge is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is worth the trip especially if you have not been there in a long time. 6. TOURING THE NATURAL BRIDGE The Natural Bridge and Baby Bridge are a stop during many island tours and can also be reached with your own car. The roads are not perfectly paved but a 4WD is not necessary. The Natural Bridge is just a little farther down from Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, passing the Ostrich Farm. From the Natural Bridge you’ll have a view to Andicuri Beach. This beach, though, can only be reached with a proper 4WD or organized off-road safari. Stefan Legger arrived in Aruba in November, 1992. He grew up in the Netherlands, where he completed his education in Hospitality at the Hotel Management School in Groningen. Ever since he was a young kid, he had the desire to have a profession in the catering industry. It only took him three weeks after his arrival to get his first job in Aruba, and at the age of 25 he had already gained a lot of experience by working at several restaurants. This experience helped him become a partner in various restaurants. He is currently the owner of Matthew’s Beachside Restaurant, M’s Crepe Shack and Santos Coffee with Soul.
