WELCOME TO JAMAICA Organising any kind of event requires careful consideration. Fortunately, Jamaica has the right combination of infrastructure and resources to support your event successfully — whether that’s a sales meeting with a potential client or a worldclass summit. Easily recognised by its sultry beaches, UNESCO World Heritage mountains, mesmerising waterfalls, vibrant culture, diverse culinary options and rich history, Jamaica has a well-established reputation as a travel destination. The mix of genuinely warm, friendly hospitality with service of the highest calibre within an idyllic setting makes the island the Caribbean hub for groups and conventions. Additionally, the Jamaica Tourist Board Groups and Conventions team is available to provide assistance for those planning meetings and conventions or organising incentive programmes. And those travelling from the U.S. benefit from the Protocol to the Income Tax Treaty with Jamaica, which makes expenses incurred by U.S. citizens and residents attending a convention, seminar or similar event on the island tax deductible. Visitors from across the globe benefit from direct flights from countless cities to the island’s three airports — two of which feature top-notch VIP lounges that make arrival at your destination a breeze and departure a pleasure. The multiple and diverse resort areas — including Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and the bucolic destinations of Port Antonio and South Coast — reflect the diverse character of the island. Check your calendar: It’s time for a meeting... in Jamaica!

FACILITIES MONTEGO BAY MONTEGO BAY CONVENTION CENTRE
Contact Information
Half Moon P.O. Box #4058 Rose Hall, St. James Tel: 876.622.9330.2
Location
The Montego Bay Convention Centre has the advanatge of having a prime location. Sangster International Airport is just 15 minutes away, and surrounding the convention centre are more than 4,000 hotel rooms, a cluster of restaurants and bars, five shopping centres, and three 18-hole championship golf courses.
Meeting & Event Space
The Montego Bay Convention Centre is the largest facility of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. The more than 139,000 square feet of event space includes the 57,525-square-foot
Exhibition Hall, which spans two buildings and offers room for 282 booths, 4,700 guests seated banquet style or 6,200 seated theatre style. For special events, the 18,684-squarefoot Grand Ballroom can seat up to 1,580 for banquets. The nine well-appointed meeting rooms offer 10,161 square feet, with the largest accomodating up to 600 attendees. The centre also boasts a 17,000-square-foot Ocean Terrace, which can seat up to 1,500 guests banquet style. The centre’s courtyard is capable of holding up to 2,600 guests for receptions within its 25,000 square feet of space. Besides its intelligent design, the convention centre is also visually striking. Attendees have views of both the coast and the mountains, and the centre’s plantation-style shutters and cutstone work are reminiscent of Jamaica’s classic Georgian-style architecture. The open-air layout of the facility — meeting, exhibition and ballroom spaces are all housed in three separate buildings and connect via outdoor walkways — gives attendees the chance to enjoy the outdoor environment more than a typical convention centre might allow. As for on-site technology, all of the convention centre’s meeting, exhibit and ballroom spaces are equipped with video-conferencing capabilities and high-speed internet. A full-service business centre,
a fully integrated broadcast and teleconference system and an on-site team of audiovisual technicians are all available to help ensure that meetings and events are thoroughly supported and run smoothly.
Services & Amenities
A broad array of services are available on-site, including language translations, audio/visual equipment and meeting planners. Our well-equipped catering facilitiy is supported by a 15,000-square-foot kitchen, along with additional prep spaces, ensuring that every culinary need — from tea breaks to five-course banquets — is addressed seamlessly. Ample parking, coach bays and freight access in the Exhibition Hall offer added convenience for larger events.

KINGSTON’S ATTRACTIONS INCLUDE DEVON HOUSE, THE BOB MARLEY MUSEUM AND THE BLUE MOUNTAINS.
EASY ACCESS Founded right on the world’s seventh-largest natural harbour, Kingston has always been a hub of activity. Now, merchant vessels and pirate ships have given way to immense cargo freighters loaded with containers and flights in and out of Norman Manley International Airport, where major legacy carriers and regional companies offer regular service to and from hundreds of international cities. The airport’s award-winning Club Kingston VIP Lounge makes travel stress free. Those who opt to go through the lounge start the experience with a personalised Meet & Greet. Being met upon arrival offers both an official welcome and practical guidance, as the VIP team is equipped to fast-track clients through immigrations and customs before escorting them to ground transportation. When leaving the island, Club Kingston’s departure lounge offers comfortable seating and invites guests to relax as they use the complimentary Wi-Fi or catch up on current events with any of the periodicals made available.
Travellers can get refreshed and stay informed about their flights whilst enjoying a bite and a cocktail prior to boarding.
ACCOMMODATING Kingston leverages its tropical appeal for those who want to work and play where they stay. Properties, such as the brand new AC Hotel meet the need to have plush accommodations, as well as functional meeting facilities. Clean and classy with just a touch of edginess, sleek design elements permeate everything from the art work in the lobby to the trend-forward lighting fixtures. Seven rooms with a total of 57,920 square feet of event space feature the latest in high-tech equipment, whilst plush beds and linens, complimentary high-speed WiFi, and a full-service restaurant make it an ideal place to get to business in comfort and style. A longtime player in the meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) space, The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel is known throughout the Caribbean as one of the region’s

raced with the lush Blue Mountains as a backdrop, Jamaica’s vibrant capital offers an eclectic mix of exquisite fare, artistic spirit and a vivacious nightlife complemented by well-equipped venues and superb service. Voted within the top 25 of The New York Times’ 52 Places to Go in 2017, Kingston is a city of two halves where the past mingles with the present and the mountains meet the sea. This very duality is what provides travellers with endless possibilities.

premier business and leisure properties. Airport pick-up and drop-off services easily get guests to and from the 300 handsomely appointed rooms and suites, and a team of experienced professionals are dedicated to the flawless execution of your event. Likewise, the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston offers proximity to all of the action in the city and the kinds of amenities that make being away on business seamless. They are equipped with traditional meeting rooms and spaces, but the ever-popular Sky Terrace and Mountain Deck, as well as the Cabana Pool and Lounge may also be booked privately for business functions and celebrations. Properties such as the AAA Four Diamond Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel feature impressive meeting venues complemented by personalised service right in the heart of the capital. The Courtleigh Hotel & Suites offers stylish accommodations and is suited for medium-size gatherings, and the Knutsford Court Hotel has six newly refurbished rooms, with its largest capable of hosting up to 300 people banquet style. Drive up the mountain roads to get to the legendary Strawberry Hill Luxury Jamaica Resort. The property offers an enchanting mix of classic Caribbean sensibility with a hearty helping of rock ’n’ roll. Plugged into the music scene throughout its history — this is where Bob Marley himself retreated to convalesce after the assassination attempt on him — the tranquil grounds belie the property’s close ties with the pioneers and trendsetters that have enjoyed its scenery. The walls of the aptly named Gold Room are painted in that colour and graced with plenty of gold records. At its centre, a stately mahogany table seats 16 guests for meetings or brainstorming sessions and can be moved to accommodate up to 100 guests for a cocktail reception. Other properties catering to groups and business travellers include the Courtyard by Marriott and R Hotel.

LET’S MEET Kingston is the hub of the country’s largest financial and business centres, with universities, embassies and multinational organisations. Wellequipped meeting and conference venues along with world-class service providers have built a network that is easy to tap into. The Jamaica Conference Centre on the waterfront offers premier facilities and services for meetings, incentives, conventions and events, including conference rooms and 24-hour security. A popular Kingston attraction, Devon House is an elegant, Georgian-style Great House built in 1881 by George Stiebel, the Caribbean’s first black millionaire. The sprawling property was beautifully restored by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and offers lush landscapes that serve as impressive outdoor venues, as well as a number of meeting spaces and a full suite of services. Devon House I Scream Shop, right on the property, was voted one of the Top 10 Places to Eat Ice Cream in the world by National Geographic. Those larger venues are complemented by more intimate settings. Many of the restaurants, theatres, museums and art galleries in the city offer novel, if perhaps unexpected, places for events.

GO TEAM!
The Jamaican capital is a vibrant hub that inspires creativity and promotes collaboration. Whilst there is plenty of business accomplished within board rooms, many negotiations are closed over drinks and a great meal. From the street corner to the fanciest gourmet spot, Kingston has some of the best offerings. The newly built plaza at Victoria Pier is where visitors and locals indulge in traditional Jamaican favourites like fried fish and bammy at Gloria’s or Devon House ice cream. If you’re up for seafood, head to Festival Marketplace on the waterfront. The annual calendar is also packed with a delicious array of culinary events. The Jamaica Food & Drink Festival in October is a five-day celebration of the finest food and drink Jamaica has to offer. Also in October is the Kingston Jerk Gospel Music Festival, which mixes traditional Jamaican fare and celebrity chefs with the Caribbean’s leading gospel acts. In November, Restaurant Week — which spans Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios — features three-course, fixed-price dinner and lunch specials at dozens of restaurants. Renowned for its vibrant nightlife, Kingston is alive with trendy bars and dance halls. Located within The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Blend Bar & Lounge could easily rival the best bars in New York City and Miami, and Spanish Court Hotel’s Sky Terrace and Mountain Deck serves up stunning views along with its delicious cocktails.
With majestic mountains, waterfalls and beaches, Jamaica can easily incorporate its natural treasures into team-building experiences. At 7,402 feet, the Blue Mountains are a part of the Blue & John Crow Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Best known as the source of Jamaica’s worldfamous Blue Mountain coffee, the towering range is a favourite with nature lovers, adventure travellers and foodies. Coffee plantations like Craighton Estate can arrange informative group tours that take visitors through the working farm and end with a delightful sampling. Beyond coffee, the beautiful Belcour Lodge offers private culinary tours of the property. Set in a Colonial-era home with lush gardens, everything from Blue Mountain honey and fruit preserves to chutneys and spicy pepper sauces is produced on site from local ingredients. Book a private group tour of the garden, and enjoy a gourmet brunch, lunch or high tea. Within the city, Hope Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in the Caribbean, and is also home to Hope Zoo. When in Jamaica, many visitors are excited about visiting the Bob Marley Museum. Located at the legendary musician’s home, it’s where he recorded and lived until his death in 1981. His simple bedroom has been left untouched, as have the bullet holes from a failed assassination attempt in 1976. Caribic Vacations’ Kingston Tour includes a stop at the museum and Devon House, too. The Peter Tosh Museum pays tribute to another iconic reggae musician by celebrating his life. Pick up a car at Island Car Rentals to visit a few of the more intriguing spots just outside of town. About 45 minutes east Kingston is the old pirate enclave of Port Royal. Resting on the Kingston Harbour, Port Royal was once vital to Jamaica’s trade and commerce. Whilst its debauchery is legendary, it is now a fun side trip.

LET’S MEET Beyond the resorts, a number of properties are prepared to host group functions. Claiming the leading title in MICE facilities and services in MoBay, the 142,000–square–foot oceanfront Montego Bay Convention Centre is a World Travel Awards Winner, as recognised by the Caribbean’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre. It features meeting, exhibition, ballroom and plenary space suitable for the International Monetary Fund and the Global Leadership Summit to have held their events there. The Tryall Club can host small groups in its breathtaking private villas: Twin Palms and dragonfly. Accommodating up to 14 guests each, organising
an event here guarantees an intimate setting, a number of options for meeting space — such as the formal dining rooms, dragonfly’s boardroom/conference room and the pool areas — and access to world-class golf. History buffs enjoy the Bellefield Great House and Gardens, one of the oldest sugar plantations in Jamaica. Rose Hall Great House has a darker past. Legend has it the ghost of Annie Palmer still haunts the restored 18thcentury Georgian mansion. Several grand resorts are now on the former sugar plantation, with most featuring fully functional indoor and outdoor event space, and high-tech audio and visual equipment. Book a stay at any of the world-renowned resorts and contact Caribic Vacations for a candle-lit evening tour of the premises. Those looking for tasty dishes, can sample a mix of Jamaican fare and international eats throughout MoBay. Larger resorts feature dozens of restaurants with an array of culinary options. Off site, the streets are lined with eateries, large and small. For a completely different experience, organise a catamaran outing — complete with delicious cocktails and appetisers. Island Routes Caribbean Adventures offers catamaran tours in MoBay aboard the 65-foot Red Dread, where groups of up to 110 people can enjoy water-based activities. Similarly sized, Island Routes’ The Katt moves between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. The Red Dread trip ends at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, where the fun continues on water trampolines and a 120-foot waterslide in the sea. When hunger strikes, the team can tuck in to classic American fare,
For an unforgettable team-building experience that also satisfies wellness goals, register your group to Jamaica Fit Trip’s Beach Olympics, where teams compete in pool games, beach volleyball, tug of war and foot races for the chance to win a free trip back. More laid-back days can be had at the ever popular Doctor’s Cave Beach, a great place to unwind after a week-long event or at the end of a tiring day. Another great stretch of sand is nearby Cornwall Beach. Nature lovers delight in the three Marine Protected Areas in MoBay, including the Montego Bay Marine Park, which has shoreline, coral reef, seagrass bed and mangrove ecosystems. Good Hope Estate is suited for all manner of activities. Tours of the estate can be thrilling — think river tubing and zip lining — or more relaxed, with high tea service or a horse-and-carriage ride. Those who want to indulge in some duty-free shopping should head to The Shoppes at Rose Hall for great finds at Bijoux Jewelers, the perfume shops and the fashion boutiques.

EASY ACCESS Getting to Negril is easy from Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport. A 1.5-hour ride down a scenic road that winds past the ruins of sugar estates and great houses will get your group from the airport to the heart of the city. Many of the larger resorts provide shuttle service to and from the airport, and Negril is also a common stop for a number of destination management companies that offer transfer services, including Island Routes Caribbean Adventures. But if you really want to take the driver’s seat for this adventure, pick up a vehicle at Island Car Rental.
LET’S MEET NEGRIL’S FAMED SEVEN MILE BEACH IS THE FOCUS OF MUCH OF THE CITY’S ACTIVITY.
Thanks to its bohemian roots, Negril is undoubtedly the capital of casual. Perpetually laid-back, it may not be the first place that comes to mind when organising a business event, but that just means you may be swapping out a board room for a beachside bungalow to close — and celebrate — your next business deal. The cottages and beachside villas throughout the city are ideally suited for small group gatherings and private retreats, and a number of the larger properties are equipped to host a
more elaborate affair. The Royalton Resorts, as well as the Grand Lido and Azul Sensatori offer all manner of meeting facilities, as well as top calibre accommodations for your group.
EXCITING OUTINGS A highlight of the West End of the island is the unparalleled view of the sunsets, but the internationally renowned Rick’s Café comes in at a close second. Situated on rocky cliffs about 35 feet above the sea, the main draw there is watching the cliff divers or taking the plunge yourself. Island Routes Caribbean Adventures’s 65-foot Kool Katt Kelly is the perfect way to enjoy all the action at Rick’s Café in a that’s customised for your group. With capacity for up to 110, the catamaran is an ideal venue for medium and large celebrations or incentive trips that includes live music and great food. After you’ve been re-energised with some delicious fare, venture out to explore Negril’s varied nightlife options.

Always abuzz with activity, The Jungle nightclub on Norman Manley Boulevard is Negril’s most popular night spot and is home to some of the city’s best DJs. Before you leave Negril, pick up a few reminders of your stay and some gifts for loved ones. Authentic, locally made arts and crafts abound along the beach, street-side from craft vendors or at the Negril Craft Market, which features Jamaican goods, from wooden chess sets and hammocks to ital carvings. There are also many souvenir shops that carry local sauces, jellies, coffee and snacks, including national brands like Walkerswood. Other popular shopping districts include the Time Square Shopping Mall, Plaza de Negril, Sunshine Village Plaza and Coral Seas Plaza. The Boardwalk Village on Seven Mile Beach is great for a fun day of shopping, dining and swimming.
GO TEAM! Negril’s crown jewel is Seven Mile Beach, an expansive stretch of sand and surf that is as picturesque as it is enjoyable. This free beach features public picnic tables,
showers and restrooms, as well as water sports operators offering rentals like kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and sailboats. Of course, you could always just soak up the sun whilst lounging all day. Bloody Bay Beach — or “the other Negril beach,” as it’s often called — is also a beautiful and popular strand. The Negril Marine Park located at the Negril Environmental Protection Area is a favourite amongst nature lovers, especially those who delight in marine life. The park is divided into several recreational zones and provides a unique opportunity to view the coastline, mangroves, offshore marine environments and coral reefs. With 21 natural pools and over 52 varieties of ferns, Mayfield Falls is one of Jamaica’s hidden gems. An experienced guide leads groups on a 45-minute climb through mineral-infused waters whilst revealing various secrets of the falls. Likewise, YS Falls in St. Elizabeth is a fantastic group destination. A source of logwood in the early 1800s, in 1992 the YS Estate opened its seven-tiered cascade to the public. After impressive renovations, the property now features pools, as well as an exciting zip line over the falls.

Priding themselves on their incomparable Jamaican hospitality, properties like the sprawling Moon Palace provide guests with access to numerous resort activities
and dining venues, and also cater to groups looking to host an event or hold business during their stay. The widely celebrated Jamaica Inn has been an Ocho Rios institution since the 1950s. Not only does it boast intimate suites and cottages on one of the finest private beaches on the island, it is also fully prepared to meet the needs of corporate guests. A state-of-the-art conference room outfitted with Wi-Fi, a flat screen TV for presentations, and a screen and projector is grounded by an elegant mahogany table. celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Kate Moss and LL Cool J. According to Evita’s owner, Eva Myers, the restaurant’s popularity stems from the quality of its dishes and panoramic view. For authentic Jamaican food, Miss T’s Kitchen serves up stellar homestyle local dishes. The Ocho Rios Village Jerk Centre is also a must for those wanting to experience a variety of Jamaican foods, as they dabble in all things jerk in a setting that reflects the island’s laidback sensibilities. Created to connect people to the local culture through food, Woolery Kitchen in Chalky Hill is an experience unto itself. The Woolery family invites diners to their home and offers a genuinely intimate Jamaican experience like no other. Ocho Rios also boasts an active nightlife scene. A simple stroll down Main Street will put you in touch with the town’s night-time entertainment aesthetic, which includes roadside boom boxes, dancing and Jamaican rum. If you’re not quite up for that, both locals and foreigners can be found partying at the bars and lounges of the area’s resorts.
GO TEAM! With major development concentrated around Main Street, the untainted natural

landscape lends itself to exploration and adventure. Ocho Rios is a nature lover’s paradise. Destination management companies like Island Routes Caribbean Adventures are equipped to make the most of the city’s many natural attractions or arrange the kinds of activities that are conducive to great business exchanges like golf outings and sailing excursions. The most famed of Ocho Rios’ outdoor attractions is undoubtedly Dunn’s River Falls. The naturally terraced cascade — approximately 180 feet high and 600 feet wide — looks and functions like a gigantic set of gently sloped steps. These have been slightly altered for guest safety. Each day, guides lead hundreds of visitors on a climb up and down the waterfall, which is surrounded by gorgeous flora. The flowing water eventually empties into the Caribbean Sea, but a number of small pools are created along the way, making a trip to this iconic Ocho Rios spot both exhilarating and refreshing. At its foot, the falls adjoins a beach where visitors get to end their adventure relaxing on the sand, getting a bite to eat or shopping for souvenirs. For a decidedly different Dunn’s River Falls experience, book an Island Routes catamaran cruise on the Calipsoul or Red Locks. For groups of up to 150, the Calipsoul is equipped to take passengers out to sea for a day of snorkelling and panoramic views, complete with a live DJ and exotic cocktails. The outing ends with the visit to the world-famous falls. The Red Locks follows a similar itinerary but accommodates up to 110 passengers, ideal for a family reunion, alumni association or other event. The company’s Island Girl catamaran sails out of James Bond Beach. The smaller boat accommodates up to 25 people, making it ideal for more intimate gatherings or to host clients and prospects. It is the only catamaran in Ocho Rios to sail east. Back on land, plan for your group to enjoy a day off at Puerto Seco Beach Park in Discovery Bay. The naturally beautiful setting is complemented by amenities that include lounger chairs, cabanas, showers, changing rooms, an

Rainforest Adventures at Mystic Mountain is also a popular destination for its thrilling rides. If what your group wants is to find great gifts to take back home, Island Village is the place. Located near the cruise ship port, it is a large, openair retail destination where individual shops are housed within bright cottages that line the boardwalk. Taj Mahal Shopping Center — inspired by the famed mausoleum in India — houses duty-free buys, including sunglasses, jewellery and watches, liquor, spices, perfumes and clothing. For a glimpse of old-time Ocho Rios, take a stroll down Main Street, where you will find hidden treasures of all sorts. Additional shopping plazas close to Main Street include Harbour Shops, Sandcastles Plaza, Ocean Village Shopping Centre and Soni’s Centre. No matter where you shop, pick up a few jars of Walkerswood Traditional Jerk Seasoning or Scotch Bonnet Pepper Sauce to take the flavours of the island back home.

obstacle course, a pool, and a restaurant and bar. Also within the park is Dolphin Cove, which is surrounded by five acres of tropical rainforest. The animals that reside in the natural cove don’t just put on a show, they play one-on-one, inviting adventurers of all ages to swim and interact. There is also a water slide, bird feeding stations, a nature trail and the opportunity to swim with stingrays. Nestled in the hills overlooking Ocho Rios, Konoko Falls was once a Taíno Indian settlement site. Now, guests can explore the River Gardens, look out for wildlife and splash in the waterfall. From the heights of the city way down underground, the Green Grotto Caves offer the perspective of life below the surface. The caves feature large rock formations, distinct ceiling pockets and covert waterways. Whilst most of the attractions in Ocho Rios are naturebased, some destinations combine nature with history. Yaaman Adventure Park offers several unique tours out of Prospect Estate, an 18th-century estate featuring a great house and acres upon acres of lush Jamaican vegetation. Visitors can choose to tour the grounds via Segway, horseback, tractor-drawn open-air carriage or even on a camel. Thrill seekers can get their adrenaline rush during the exciting Wet n’ Dirty Outback Adventure on quick, two-seater dune buggies. You’ll be treated to flying mud and a bumpy ride as you twist and turn your way through hidden trails.

rrol Flynn — a Hollywood legend and one of the city’s most famous residents during the 1950s — said Port Antonio is “more beautiful than any woman I had ever known.” The sleepy town located just 60 miles from Kingston offers respite for those in search of tranquillity. Likewise, the South Coast feels like a postcard version of Jamaica before it became a global destination of choice.
EASY ACCESS PORT ANTONIO AND THE SOUTH COAST WILL TREAT YOU TO AN UNTOUCHED SIDE OF THE ISLAND.
To reach either of these two towns, you’ll need to hit the road for a bit. Luckily, it will likely be one of the most beautiful drives of your life. After arriving at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Port Antonio is about a two-hour drive away. You can also book a Mini-Routes tour from Ocho Rios with Island Routes Caribbean Adventures. Behind the wheel of your own MINI Cooper, you will feel like you are truly immersed in an adventure as you follow an experienced guide through the countryside for the day, making stops at local attractions along the way. To get to the South Coast, you will need to arrive at Sangster International Airport and drive through the country across several parishes to get to your destination. It sounds like a long trip, but the ride is actually just shy of two hours.
If you are staying at one of the larger resorts, your transfer is most likely included as part of your amenities. Otherwise, hiring a destination management company or renting a car from Island Car Rental will provide you with easy access to the transportation you need to get your group wherever your plans take you.
ACCOMMODATING As the capital city of Portland Parish, Port Antonio is defined by a rich history of banana exports, river rafting and attracting Hollywood’s 1940s socialites. Today, it still attracts a jet-set crowd, but in a much more understated manner. That said, it’s the one place on the island where you could stay at a castle. Originally built for a baroness, The Trident Hotel is an eight-bedroom castle that sits on a seven-acre plot of fastidiously manicured lawns tempered by unexpected sculptures of grazing

sheep and dramatic seaside vistas. It boasts a helicopter pad, a luxurious swimming pool and a secluded, private chapel. It also offers a flexible and well-appointed event space that is suitable for anything from incentive trips and business conferences to product launches and fashion shoots. In the same creative vein, Geejam Hotel is nestled deep within the heart of Port Antonio’s lush landscape and features three deluxe cabins, one suite, and a self-contained three-bedroom villa, as well as a state-of-the-art recording studio. This is the kind of place where business gets creative. Other notable properties include Hotel Mockingbird Hill and the Goblin Hill Villas at San San. By contrast the South Coast feels more bohemian. The funky cottages at Jakes have become recognised world-wide for their artsy décor and fun vibe, and though a world apart, Sandals South Coast features over-the-water bungalows meant to transport you to the kind of getaway only see on influencer social media feeds.
LET’S MEET Port Antonio is celebrated for its authentic Jamaican experience. The elegantly secluded properties in this part of the island boast modern amenities and services suitable for any kind of function. The Errol Flynn Marina is equipped to welcome even the world’s largest yachts — the only marina in the Caribbean with those capabilities. It also happens to be the home to the Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament. For a celebration with a decidedly maritime feel, charter a luxury vessel for your team or clients. Though the South Coast is generally less equipped for the kinds of gatherings that other resort towns organise on a regular basis, its very isolation and low-key ambience make it the ideal place to host smaller gatherings, intimate events or immersive retreats. A number of hotels in South Coast are perfectly suited for a hotel buyout, giving your team exclusive control of the property and its amenities, and larger players like Sandals South Coast are able to provide all the high-calibre service you’d expect at a Sandals resort.

In the South Coast, head to Floyd’s Pelican Bar. Built on stilts and set about a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay, you can grab a beer with Floyd himself, maybe join him in a game of dominoes and carve your name in the wood. Little Ochie is a well-known fishing beach where you find some of the freshest fish on the island.

Not far from the heart of Port Antonio, Blue Lagoon is the island’s largest spring-fed lagoon, plunging nearly 180 feet. Ice-cold mountain spring water collides with warm tidal currents, making bathing in its depths a mystical experience. From Blue Lagoon, Caribic Vacations can assist you with a quintessential Portie experience: rafting on the Rio Grande. Originally used to transport produce, primarily bananas, Errol Flynn was the first to promote rafting for pleasure. Aboard the rafts passengers get a unique view of the island, navigating through bamboo and banana groves. Port Antonio also boasts two of the island’s most breathtaking waterfalls: Reach Falls and Somerset Falls. Reach Falls is located on Driver’s River and flows from the John Crow Mountains to form crystal-clear rock pools on its way down. Its main pool was the location of the waterfall scene in the movie Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise. Somerset Falls is steeped in history. The 97-acre
property encompasses lush gardens and “hidden falls” accessible only by boat. Visitors traverse a winding path through a rich tropical landscape — which leads through deep rock pools and natural caves — before witnessing the Daniels River cascade into a 20-foot-deep pool. At the iconic Frenchman’s Cove, visitors can enjoy the merging of fresh river mineral spring water and the temperate ocean. Those looking for a “wilder” sea experience can head to Winnifred Beach to explore the reef just offshore, perfect for snorkelling. Heading east, Long Bay Beach offers one of the island’s longest uninterrupted stretches of breathtaking coastline, as well as rolling surf. From the shores to the mountains, you can enjoy a different view of Jamaica on two wheels. Organise a Blue Mountain Bicycle tour with Caribic Vacations to treat your group to truly amazing views of the landscape. Port Antonio’s heights also open a window to local Maroon history and

culture. The descendants of escaped slaves, the Maroons established free communities in the mountainous north of the island in the 17th century. Nanny, sometimes referred to as Queen Nanny, led the community and organised slavefreeing raids. Her work led to the 1739 peace treaty that included 2,500 acres of land for her people. Self-governing Maroon settlements exist there to this day. Travellers can learn more about the story at the Charles Town Museum and Safu Yard, where their history, artefacts, traditional herbalism and musical performances are presented. Over on the South Coast, the beaches are the perfect place to start exploring. Characterised by rocky coves, black-sand beaches and secluded swimming spots, Treasure Beach is just what its name implies. This six-mile stretch features both white and black sand (the black resulting from traces of iron) and is known for its four bays: Billy’s, Calabash, Frenchman’s and Fort Charles Great Bay. Island Routes Caribbean Adventures will take your group on a catamaran excursion out to Floyd’s Pelican Bar aboard the 65-foot Soul Rebel. The quirky tiki-style bar made completely out of driftwood in the middle of the sea is a legendary local stop that makes for an unforgettable
experience. Enjoy a cold beer and add your name to the hundreds carved all over the floor of the structure. Fonthill Beach Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural refuge. Though relatively small, it is well organised, offering visitors a number of amenities, including a roped-off swimming area, showers, changing facilities, restrooms, picnic tables and lifeguards. It is part of a large wildlife sanctuary that is home to about 200 crocodiles and an array of wading birds. In addition, the sanctuary serves as the nesting grounds for hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles. Black River is also a quintessential stop in this region. The second-longest river in Jamaica (after the River Minho), it gets its name because of the dark riverbed below. Now, it is the launching point for an exciting river tour, which takes you on a journey through Jamaica’s morass landscape, home to saltwater crocodiles and a variety of birds, including egrets and herons. Visitors and locals flock to the Milk River, one of the most radioactive rivers in the world, to experience its healing waters. On average, they are 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit (32-35 degrees Celsius) throughout the year and contain high levels of magnesium, calcium, sulphate and natural chloride. These minerals are recommended for those with rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica and nerve complaints. Lover’s Leap is named after an enslaved couple that was so in love that the partners chose to leap to their deaths rather than be separated. This spot is surrounded by breathtaking views of Cutlass Bay. A wooden carving of the two lovers stands vigil over the 1,700-foot cliff. Nearby, Lover’s Leap Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere. You can now spend the day there at the recently opened restaurant and bar. ourjamaicamagazine.com

Buses are an inexpensive way to travel, though they may provide an unusual experience for many visitors, as bus stands are rarely marked and vehicles do not follow strict schedules. Some resorts offer bus excursions to popular sites. Check with your concierge for more information.
The currency of Jamaica is the Jamaica Dollar. Licenced “cambio” (exchange) centres and commercial banks are accessible in all resort areas. Official currency exchange rates vary daily, so it’s advisable to shop around for the best rate.
CLIMATE
United States residents who have been out of the country for 48 hours or more may take home items valued up to US$800 once every 31 days without incurring duty. Adults may include 200 cigarettes, 100 non-Cuban cigars and one litre of alcohol. A second litre of alcohol is allowed duty-free if it is produced by a Caribbean Basin country. Family members who return home together may combine their personal exemptions on a joint declaration. Visit cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/ id_visa/kbyg/customs_duty_info.xml for more information. Canadian residents who have been out of the country for more than 48 hours can claim up to CAN$300 worth of goods without paying duty if they carry the goods with them. After each absence of seven days or more, they can claim up to CAN$800 worth of goods without duty.

Jamaica enjoys a tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures and humid conditions year-round. Average temperature ranges from 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) to 99 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). Though it’s known for warmth and sunshine, the island sees two rainy seasons from May to June and September to November. Also, hurricanes may pass over the island primarily from June to September. If it rains during your stay, don’t worry. Most times, the short tropical showers provide a welcome break from the afternoon heat.

CREDIT CARDS
Most Jamaican ATMs (called ABMs) accept international bank cards with Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus or Plus logos.
Major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted throughout the island.

Except for tobacco products and alcohol, they can send goods through mail but must enter Canada with tobacco and alcohol. Visit cbsaasfc.gc.ca for more information. United Kingdom residents 17 or older may take home duty-free two litres of table wine and one litre of spirits or liquors, or two litres of fortified or sparkling wine or other liquors; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco; 60 cc of perfume and 250 cc of eau de toilette; plus other goods worth up to £145. Travellers cannot group their allowances. Visit hmrc.gov.uk for more information.
DEPARTURE TAX There is a $35 departure tax that must be paid upon departure. However, airlines include this tax in their airline tickets.
DRIVING In Jamaica, drivers must keep to the left, although some flexibility is required to avoid collisions with pedestrians and domestic animals. The speed limit is 30 mph (50 kmph) in urban areas and 50 mph (80 kmph) on highways. Given the mountainous terrain, rural roads are often winding, bumpy and narrow. Tourists can rent cars in most major towns and cities, and, usually, clients must be no less than 25 years old in order to rent. The driver and all passengers are required to wear safety belts, and children under 3 years old must travel in infant carriers or child safety seats. All drivers are required to carry a valid licence. Jamaica recognises valid international driver’s licences, but visitors from North America may use their country’s licence for up to three months per visit, and United Kingdom residents may use theirs for up to one year.
HOLIDAYS 2019 On public holidays, all government agencies, schools and most private businesses are closed, and much of the country celebrates. New Year’s Day January 1 Ash Wednesday March 6 Good Friday April 19 Easter Monday April 22 Labour Day May 23 Emancipation Day August 1 Independence Day August 6 National Heroes’ Day October 21 Christmas Day December 25 Boxing Day December 26
SAFETY As with any place in the world, you should always remember to follow basic precautions to avoid possible predicaments. Keep all luggage in view at all times and your personal effects close to your body; don’t carry large amounts of cash; and avoid wearing expensive jewellery outside of your resort.
TIPPING It is customary to leave a 10 to 15 percent gratuity at restaurants. Please make sure to check your bill, as some establishments will have already included the gratuity in your total.
TRAVEL INSURANCE Accidents and mishaps happen all the time, even when you’re on vacation. Caribbean Travel Assurance Brokers Limited offers visitors valuable travel insurance for those “just in case” moments.
DRUGS
WATER
In Jamaica, the use, sale and possession of drugs such as cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and any other controlled substances is illegal. Offenders are subject to severe punishment, including arrest, fines and/ or imprisonment. The possession of up to two ounces of ganja (marijuana) has been decriminalised, but it is still not legal.
All piped water in Jamaica is treated and purified in accordance with international standards. You may drink it, bathe in it and brush your teeth with it.
ELECTRICITY Standard electrical service is similar to that of the United States and Canada: 110 volts, 50 cycles AC. However, there is 220 volts service available at some hotels.
LANGUAGE The official language of Jamaica is English, although most locals speak Patois.
GETTING AROUND Taxis Taxis are the most convenient mode of transportation, but they are not always the cheapest. All registered taxis in Jamaica are required by law to have red “PPV” licence plates. You are advised not to board any taxi operating illegally. Although taxis have metres, drivers will instead negotiate a fare with you. It is best to discuss this fare before boarding the taxi. The fastest and most economical taxis are those used by locals, called “route
taxis” — cars that drive a designated course and pick up/drop off passengers at will. These are shared cabs that will usually pack several people willing to go on the same route. NOTE: Some taxis are compensated separately by businesses in order to bring customers to their doors. If you request a driver take you to a specific location, and the driver attempts to pursuade you to visit another place, be insistent that they take you where you want to go.
TRANSPORTATION AND TOUR COMPANIES Other reliable modes of transportation are available throughout the island. Contact the following purveyors for shuttles, buses and car rentals. THE JAMAICA HOTEL+ TOURIST ASSOCIATION WE REPRESENT HOTELS
This Page Round Hill Hotel and Villas in Montego Bay
and other visitor accommodations, as well as most suppliers of goods and services to the tourism industry. The JHTA had its roots in the association of hoteliers established shortly before the birth of Jamaica as an independent nation in 1962, an indication that tourism was to play a major role in the development of the nation, and so it has. Tourism has become a mainstay of Jamaica’s economy, and as an association we are committed to ensuring that our members operate within an environment that is conducive
to their growth and development. In support of the sustainability of the industry, we work closely with the Government of Jamaica, through partnerships and representation on the boards of state agencies, such as the Jamaica Tourist Board, Tourism Product Development Company and Tourism Enhancement Fund. Part of our mandate is to equip our members not only to do business but to do business well. Committed to their professional development, we provide the tools they need to keep abreast of best practices in marketing, technology, finance, environmental awareness and service delivery. Information is developed and shared through seminars, workshops, webinars and General Manager’s Think Tanks. We also engage in marketing and promotion, and host Jamaica’s premier travel trade show: Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX). Every year we welcome some 800 persons involved in tourism and travel from around the world to participate in JAPEX to learn more about the destination, and also do business with the hoteliers, attractions and tour operators here. We invite you to make our Jamaica, land we love, your Jamaica. Have a great time!

PLANNERS TAKE NOTE! Jamaica remains a meeting planner’s dream and a magnet for top scores due to its convenient location. Meeting and incentive planners have not been disappointed when selecting Jamaica for their seminar, corporate retreat, incentive event, faithbased activity or convention. The destination provides the infrastructure and natural beauty that ensures the success of any program by making a statement that is well remembered by delegates. The 2019 edition of Our Jamaica Meeting Planners’ Guide is intended to showcase the reasons Jamaica ought to be at the top of your list when planning any event. According to the Conference Board’s Global Economic Outlook for 2019, the global economy will remain strong. Whilst a surging economy generally means a robust meetings outlook,
planners will face significant challenges. According to the 2019 Meetings & Events Future Trends report from Carlson Wagonlit Travel Meetings & Events, “demand could climb by five to 10 percent around the globe.” As the demand increases, Jamaica is poised to rise to the challenge. The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and its partners have invested considerable resources to transform the destination into one that will cater any event, whilst offering plenty of excursions to complement any program. Thank you for your interest in Destination Jamaica. Please use this guide as a resource in the planning process. Our JTB team stands ready to assist whilst looking forward to welcoming you and your clients to Jamaica!
THE JAMAICA TOURIST BOARD IS ABLE TO PROVIDE A RANGE OF SERVICES AND ASSISTANCE, INCLUDING: • Request For Proposal (RFP) • Customised site visits • Vendor list to help you identify unique products and services • Customs clearance assistance for items that will be used on island and taken back out of the country • Promotional material including destination brochures, videos, displays and more • Product updates on hotels, attractions, tours, off-site venues and services • Insider tips and the most up-to-date information so you can really WOW your clients! • Distinctly unique resort areas that can address a wide array of needs and goals
