sunshine state of mind

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore,” said French writer André Gide. Considering what it takes to travel these days, gallivanting about requires a fair amount of tenacity. But, boy, is it worth it! With that in mind, our team challenged itself to create the ultimate travel issue filled with features on summer destinations, private travel clubs, and jaw-dropping cars to get you around. If your proverbial road is short this summer, making best of your time at home should come courtesy of Aerin Lauder, the image director for the Estée Lauder Companies and the subject of our celebrity profile, whose eponymous lifestyle brand recently launched in the Design District. With AERIN’s selection of furniture, décor trinkets, and lounge wear, your home may very well become your favorite destination. Speaking of trinkets, the jewels and bathing suits featured in our cover story and worn by Martha Graeff, a top model and a relentless traveler, are a perfect complement to the stunning Arsht Estate that served as a sweeping backdrop. Quite the head trip, indeed.

Generations of connectivity between New York and Miami continues to flourish. Nowhere is this more obvious than in real estate, as more New Yorkers plant their roots into primary and secondary South Florida residences. At the same time, many South Floridians are capitalizing on opportunities within New York City’s residential real estate market. While our BHHS EWM family has a strong connection with our sister BHHS companies in the northeast, a recent announcement has strengthened that connection. In April, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties announced the addition of two widely revered industry leaders as the company commences a significant brand expansion across the city’s residential brokerage market. Steven James is now New York City brokerage’s President and CEO, and Brad Loe is Executive Vice President, Director of Sales. Diane Ramirez, also a highly respected figure within the area’s real estate brokerage community, was appointed late last year as Chief Strategy Officer for BHHS New York Properties. This high-energy trio will lead BHHS growth within the New York City market. I’m very excited to welcome these professionals, and my friends, to the BHHS family, and look forward to furthering the connections between our management teams and associates, as we continue to forge our north/south family connections.

EN POINTE

This year’s International Ballet Festival of Miami, which spans three weeks starting July 23, “will finally have a full performance with companies and people from all over the world,” shares Eriberto Jimenez, the artistic director of the Festival, referencing Italy’s Teatro Alla Scala, France’s Arles Youth Ballet, and the United Kingdom’s Birmingham Royal Ballet companies. The lineup will highlight many renown guests such as Roger Salas, Spanish journalist and author of Con el Paso Cambiado, and Orlando Taquechel, a noted dance writer and researcher who will be on hand for a book signing. But you don’t have to be a die-hard fan to truly appreciate the festivities. “Dance is something anyone can relate to,” Jimenez concludes. “It’s a way of living, and that’s what I love about the festival. It brings other people into the world of dance.” BY CHARLOTTE TRATTNER

FAT CITY 1950’s nostalgia is having a Miami moment, and

local food and design lovers can’t get enough. Joining the list of restaurants with a distinctly retro vibe, The Collins Room at the members-only club Bath House draws from the spirit of the jet-set era of the 1950s and 1960s, when Frank Sinatra and Art Deco ruled supreme and glitz and glamour were par for the course. The swanky setting is the perfect canvas for a tableside shaken martini served in vintage stemware and continental cuisine that features a seafood platter with a side of Kaluga caviar or Peking-style chicken. Top off the evening with a digestif at Governor’s Loggia while enjoying live music for an experience Sinatra would approve.

Every season, South Florida sees a host of new restaurant openings. Along with Harry’s in West Palm Beach’s Rosemary Square, Pompano Beach’s The Bite Eatery food hall, and Pastis in Wynwood, there are several newcomers heading our way this summer. BY JEN KARETNICK

Bayshore Club Bar & Grill 3385 Pan American Dr., Coconut Grove

Miami’s own Grove Bay Hospitality Group brings the long-awaited waterfront Bayshore Club Bar & Grill to the mixed-use Regatta Harbour. Influences range from nautical to global, given the site’s history as Pan Am’s first seaplane terminal and hangar. Expect a celebration of those Miami annals through the décor: the wallpaper, drink coasters, and menu design all nod to that distinctive past. A “Greetings from Miami” postcard mural is another retro element, rivaling the views offered by the 360-degree bar. Fare also takes a note from the inherent maritime theme, with items ranging from raw bar selections to ceviches to soft-shell crab tacos. Relish it all against a backdrop of a stunning sunset and envy-worthy boats docked at the marina.

PLANTA Queen, the Asian take on the veggieforward favorite eatery, opens in Fort Lauderdale with vegan sushi, dumplings, noodles, bao buns, and more just in time for the hottest season of the year. With items ranging from cocktails like Herb Your Enthusiasm to an all-vegan Dim Sum Sunday brunch, PLANTA and PLANTA Queen have been garnering praise wherever they go. Co-founded by CEO Steven Salm and executive chef David Lee in 2016 in South Beach, the concept has expanded but remained true to its mantra of local, local, local. At PLANTA Queen in Fort Lauderdale, you can expect innovative vegan Asian fare, plus just about everything that ties it culinarily to its roots. From the surrounding community to the produce, servers, volunteer programs, and initiatives, the goal is hyper regional. In addition to great, nutritious fare and cocktails, the restaurant reduces waste and sustains the environment with compostable packaging.

Forget what you might already know about Fogo de Chão, the carnivore’s paradise where an enormous number of cuts of meat are served to customers from gleaming skewers. This internationally recognized steakhouse from Brazil has revamped itself and is opening its flagship location in the early part of the summer. The two-story setting — featuring plenty of gleaming natural woods, dry-aged meat lockers, and display cases for an amazing selection of fine wines — is located in The Plaza Coral Gables, a recently developed hospitality and shopping destination. Fogo also includes Next Level Lounge, a premium cigar bar, and The Butchery, a dine-in or takeout café for charcuterie, cheeses, and other authentic Brazilian artisanal items, all hand-carved by Fogo’s in-house gauchos.

The drama of king crab claws speaks for itself. At least it does at Shasa Krilov and Misha Zelman’s Klaw, opening this summer at the Miami Women’s Club, a Spanish Renaissance building listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Not only are king crabs imported from the frigid Arctic Ocean near Norway and the star feature on the menu, the crustaceans also crawl around in bespoke tanks within the restored building so diners can properly appreciate their immensity. In addition, chef Tim Elmore serves specially raised beef sourced from cattle that only eat a curated diet. Restored and redeveloped by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, Klaw offers numerous spaces within its three stories: an opulent dining room with sunset views, a private dining room, a theater kitchen, and Edgewater’s first rooftop bar with views of Biscayne Bay.

It is arguably the most authentic area of Miami Beach and where many of the locals live. 2/ Your favorite places to hangout? The Bandshell on 73rd and Collins Avenue, where live concerts take place and the community comes together. 3/ The best spot to dine? Silverlake Bistro is one of the newest and best. CONNECTION Driving PCH from Malibu north to County Line. One of my favorite ways to connect to LA’s vibrant energy is through watching shows at the Hollywood Bowl. INSPIRATION CANVAS, a locally owned boutique and gallery in Malibu always has new exhibits and the best fashion. Also, I find inspiration at The Getty, hiking Solstice Canyon, or walking Broad Beach. I try to make it to the monthly Rose Bowl Flea Market as much as possible. For a designer, it’s a very inspiring destination.

PEOPLE WATCHING I love spending the afternoons and sunsets at the Little Beach House Malibu or at Nobu where the best people watching is done with a “Picante” cocktail in your hand, of course.

CHILL Since I live and run our store in Malibu, I spend most of our time in the small beach town. When the weather heats up, I love to go sailing along the coast, stop by Broad Street Oyster or Malibu Seafood for lunch, enjoy afternoons at the local wineries, take the paddleboards out, and enjoy cocktails at The Surfrider Hotel.

Malibu-based Teressa Foglia is a modern milliner with a serious case of wanderlust. An avid topper lover, she took a hat-making course while visiting Europe, which led to a career pivot that resulted in Teressa Foglia Hat Studio + Shops — located in Brooklyn, Malibu, Laguna Beach, Nashville, and Houston — and soon adding Miami’s Faena Hotel as a retail partner. Her custom, one-of-a-kind creations are as unique as the wearer. Though trims like vintage grosgrain, antique fabrics, charms, and jewelry are often sourced at antique markets in Paris, Sardinia, Ibiza, Tokyo, and Bali, Malibu is a continuous source of Foglia’s inspiration. At the core of Bernardo Möller’s itinerary one will find creativity, hustle, and some really good food. The creator of House of Bō, a Miami-based, gender neutral, and naturally derived fragrance line with a global reach, gives us a peek into a typical day. BY ISABELLA CANEL

I always wake up and do a 15-minute meditation in my bed before I look at my phone or think about the rest of my day.

7am

Mexico to talk about the design for our new bottle caps. Last, but not least, I’m “zooming” with Harrods about a potential partnership with us.

1 pm

I go for a 40-minute run around Hibiscus and Palm Islands, where I live. That’s also where I get a lot of ideas and creative motivation.

I always fast in the mornings; it keeps me focused and motivated. I break my fast with a vegan protein shake combined with supplements.

8am

2pm

The most exciting part of my day, I sit down in my home office and start working with a clear mind. I take care of all my calls, emails, etc.

Staff training at one of our Neiman Marcus locations to talk all things perfume.

3pm

Business lunch with Ed from Ed Berrios Design, a local multidisciplinary interiordesign practice. We meet at Mandolin in the Design District, bar none my favorite restaurant.

4pm

More meetings…this time at Patron of the New in Miami Design District, one of the local retailers that carries House of Bō.

5pm

Back on the beach. Checking in with Gabriela Medina at Abba to talk about the 50-person Latin American Fashion Summit dinner event we are throwing at Fendi Chateau.

6pm

10am

I hit the gym at Anatomy for a light weight training routine.

On Zoom calls. There is always one with our perfumers to talk about House of Bō’s next fragrance. A lot of my inspiration comes from memories, dreams, and experiences. There are a lot of specific risks I have to take, but that’s part of being creative. I follow that call with a Zoom check in with our marble cap artisans in

8pm

I join my friends at Soho House on the second floor for a bite. I never miss an opportunity to stop by the hotel’s boutique to spray some La Mar by House of Bō before I leave for the night.

ArkHAUS, the world’s first-ever floating members-only club, is set to open on Biscayne Bay at the end of this year.

concepts, including ZZ’s Club by Major Food Group, a private club dedicated to members with “the highest caliber of dining and service.” In Palm Beach, Carriage House, a contemporary lifestyle social club, opened this year. And slated for an end of 2022 opening is ArkHAUS, the world’s first-ever floating members-only club, consisting of multi-story villas with outdoor decks, saltwater pools, and rooftop lounges overlooking Biscayne Bay. “The four futuristic solar-electric structures connect to anchor an exciting new vision where community, innovation, and fun collide,” teases Sam Payrovi, ArkHAUS CEO and co-founder. “The vessels also feature solar awnings paired to an electric propulsion, along with innovative architecture that can only be described as the pinnacle of luxury, design, and sustainability.” The growing trend around Florida is seemingly a ripple effect from the heightened attention members clubs have received postpandemic. “We’re seeing an increased demand for safe, private spaces — not to mention, coworking, fitness, and other amenities [that] membership clubs provide,” shares Ben Pfinsgraff, co-founder at Common House, a design-driven, private members club with locations in Tennessee and Virginia. Pfinsgraff emphasizes that even though membership clubs are trending in primary markets, Common House is targeting “the underserved secondary markets” where many people are relocating from larger cities and expecting higher standards of places to work and live but still have access to experiences. “We like to think our ability to bring people together through thoughtful design, incredible food and drink, and shared experience is what keeps our members coming back,” he adds. Experiential programming runs the gamut, from spirits and cocktails at Multnomah Whiskey Club in Portland Oregon; fitness at

Heimat in Los Angeles; cuisine at Casa Cipriani in New York City; and art and culture at the aforementioned Faena Rose in Miami. “What people truly want is to create memories — and enhance and enrich their lives — through experiences,” says Pablo De Ritis, President of Faena Rose in Miami. De Ritis adds that Faena Rose runs about 60 cultural events a year, consisting of everything from prereleased film screenings to dance performances across all disciplines in Faena’s Broadwaycaliber theater. Other programming includes music performances across all genres, guest chef programming (with talent like Massimo Bottura and Nina Compton) as well as master classes, workshops, and zeitgeist conversations. For the majority of member clubs, in addition to the common expectation of programming — as varied as it may be — is the availability of on-site hotel rooms, which only members have discretionary access. In recent years, however, hotel brands have started launching their own club concepts to keep up with the demand in this sector. Take, for example, Faena Rose, an extension of the Faena Hotel property, as well as the Rosewood Hotel Group’s Carlyle & Co. in NYC, which opened in June 2021; Hollywood’s forthcoming Aster, Salt Group hotel collections first private members club and Tesserae, the private club within the Thompson Buckhead in Atlanta schedule to open this year. “It’s not surprising that hotels, looking to avoid the next economic downturn, are looking to add membership clubs as an amenity and recurring income stream,” says Pfinsgraff, pointing to yet another reason why private clubs make sense beyond a vanity-driven endeavor. For the end users that translates into a perennial myriad of options that tickle their fancy, speak to locations of their choosing and envelop them with a lifestyle that speaks to their passions.

embership clubs, pay-to-play communities, or whatever else you call them, are on the rise. And, most recently, in our own backyard. Miami emerges as a coveted hot spot, with hyper-focused models celebrating art, design, culinary culture, and entertainment. “It seems like every global, luxury club brand wants to have an outpost in Miami,” says Drew Wahl, chief partnership officer at Sonato, a company reputed for a platform that streamlines private club operations. Sonato, founded by Michael Birch — who is also the co-founder of San Francisco private members club, The Battery — launched Sonato Alliance, an invitation-only network of the world’s best independent private social clubs. Among the 35 founding members are Pershing in Austin, Texas and Fitler Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and they are as far reaching as Kjarval in Iceland and 1880 in Singapore. Sonato, too, has its eyes not just on Miami, but Florida’s burgeoning private clubs scene. After all, international clubs are already a proven success in the region. Miami hosts the original leader in English social clubs, SoHo House, opened in 2010, as well as Faena Rose, an art- and culture-based private members club established by the Faena Group in 2017. Chef du Jour, a membership-only restaurant concept bringing international chefs to Miami for residencies, has its roots planted in Coral Gables and is set to open in fall of this year. “Miami is always at the forefront of new restaurant concepts, which is one of the important reasons why we chose to open in this city,” says Philippe Roquefort, President of Chef du Jour. Miami is the first location in North America, though locations in Los Angeles and Montreal are inaugurating soon. Further newcomers to the region are launching quickly and with even more elite

ELEVATED LIVING CELEBRATING A DECADE OF INSPIRING HOSTESSES WORLDWIDE, AERIN LAUDER’S HOME-CENTRIC BRAND IS SETTING UP SHOP IN MIAMI’S DESIGN DISTRICT. HERE IS HOW THE DOYENNE OF GOOD TASTE, AND THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF ESTÉE LAUDER, PLANS ON MAKING A CHARMED MARK ON THE MAGIC CITY WITH HER EPONYMOUS LINE OF COSMETICS, FRAGRANCE, FASHION, AND FURNITURE. BY ANETTA NOWOSIELSKA

Aerin Lauder in her Floridian element.

How was the process of evolving the offerings transformed your shops into what it is now? Through the years, I have learned so much from our customers. I like to believe that I have a strong understanding of what resonates with them and what they gravitate towards. This is why the edit in each store is slightly different. While our best-sellers ultimately remain the same worldwide, the AERIN team curates an edit that speaks to the customer on a local level.

What made you gravitate towards home décor when launching AERIN? Beauty is my heritage, but home is my passion. There was an opportunity in the market for a lifestyle brand based on feminine, modern and effortless products with strong heritage and storytelling. I decided to launch AERIN as a lifestyle brand and make beauty part of the way we live every day.

This page: AERIN has opened a new store in Miami’s Design District. Opposite page: hostess with the mostess.

What are some of the most important ideas one should consider when outfitting homes? First and foremost, I believe that comfort is most important. I only use pieces in my own home that are both beautiful and functional. I like to mix and match new pieces with other vintage elements and items that have been passed down to me; I think that this layered approach gives a room personality and creates a warm, welcoming environment. My grandmother also used to say that gold is a neutral, which has become a common theme throughout the AERIN brand. A touch of gold adds an elevated accent that casually enhances a home. Ultimately though, decorating a home is all about personal style so I always recommend incorporating pieces that feel right and spark joy.

What do you hope Miami-based clients discover about your aesthetic? One of the most special things about the brand is that none of our products are too precious. They are all intended to be used and loved. Whether it is a new candle, raffia pouch, or tableware for an upcoming dinner party, we offer something for every type of customer. I am excited for our Miamibased clients to discover the brand and embrace the AERIN sensibility. My grandmother, Estée, always used to say that everything can be beautiful if you take the time, and I believe that is so true. How does Miami lifestyle work with your ideas? I have always loved Miami’s sense of vibrancy, color, style, and tropical influence. The store is filled with bright florals, raffia textures, and beach-inspired home décor. We relied heavily on the local cues to showcase an effortlessly elegant curation that exudes tropical ease.

PHOTOS BY SILJA MAGG, MARK LUND

For those living under a rock, tell us about AERIN? AERIN is a global luxury lifestyle brand based on the premise that living beautifully should be effortless. The brand develops curated collections in the worlds of beauty, fashion accessories, and home décor with a sensibility that is classic, but always with a modern point of view. Every piece is created to make life more beautiful, with a sense of ease and refinement.

Speaking of curating, how does your edit change with specific locations? The curated edits in each of our retail locations are very much influenced by the destination. I love how we have the ability to use our surroundings as inspiration and curate this unique retail experience where our stores offer an element of surprise and delight for our customers. For example, Miami has this very distinct point of view, so we intentionally incorporated materials that made sense for the local lifestyle. Especially with the home décor, the assortment is a primarily white color palette with elements of straw and raffia. Shagreen is typically a core material throughout the AERIN brand, but we felt it worked best in our other locations. As for fashion, the edit is colorful, floral, and happy — the perfect pieces to take our customers from days at the beach to festive Miami nights out.

You are known, among many things, as the epitome of sophisticated hostesses. Can you tell us about a dinner party that helped you define your ideal of home entertaining? I have always loved to entertain. Inviting people into one’s home and hosting them for a meal is a gesture of generosity — it’s warm and intimate, and allows your friends, family, and guests to feel truly welcome and cared for. To be honest, my wedding was my first experience really hosting, and I absolutely loved it. I had so much fun curating a menu and creating an environment that was personal to me and exciting for my guests. This experience really introduced me to the world of entertaining, and I have enjoyed it ever since.

Name your three favorite things available at AERIN in Miami? I would recommend the AERIN tabletop pieces, especially our best-selling Paulette dinnerware in the new blue colorway with our Freya chargers. I love how the blue works so well with the wicker accessories, creating the perfect setting for entertaining at home. I also love the edit of fashion pieces, especially the bathing suits and cover-ups. AERIN has always embraced up-and-coming designers by offering these smaller brands that customers can’t always find elsewhere, like Alix of Bohemia, Lisa Marie Fernandez, and Johanna Ortiz along with many others. Our customers are always excited to see how cohesive the edit is and that the pieces can ultimately be mixed and matched.

The architect of a next generation “school of the future” in Chicago and an angel investor and a best-selling author, Sarah Elizabeth Ippel and Stefan Weitz retreat to Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo not only to recharge, but also to be part of the country’s commitment to conservation.

As we entered the peninsula for the first time, we were struck by its ecological expanse, inescapable views, and vast array of wildlife. But candidly, what sold it for us was the rigorous commitment to sustainability and conservation. W h a t m a k e s t h i s a r e a u n l i k e a n y o t h e r ? We’ve always had a fascination with Blue Zones and were intrigued by Papagayo’s proximity to Nicoya that is among five regions in the world where people live the longest and are the healthiest. We enjoy exploring the country’s ecological and cultural beauty, and within a couple of hours you can hike a volcano, visit the cloud forest, rescue baby turtles on the beach, or trek through the rainforest. L o c a l a d v e n t u r e s w o r t h y o f n o t e Rio Perdido is a magical place, nestled deeply within a remote and verdant dwarf forest, and bisected by a thermal river that grows increasingly warm as you trek toward the origin point. N o t t o m i s s l a n d m a r k Definitely Prieta Bay beach when the baby turtles are hatching! The peninsula’s mangrove forest is also not to be missed — grab a kayak and meander through the waterways to witness unbelievable biodiversity. Under a new moon, head out to the Golfo de Papagayo at night for a bioluminescent tour and literally watch the water come alive with light as you water-bike across the bay. W h a t t o p a c k Peninsula Papagayo is relatively relaxed – you’ll never need anything more than a collared shirt and a pair of linen trousers or a casual summer dress. B e s t p l a c e s f o r c o f f e e The whole country is awash in exceptional coffee! On property, the Andaz has nearly a dozen different local coffees you can try with four different brewing methods, so that’s a must do if you’re into intriguing flavors. F a v o r i t e p l a c e t o d i n e On the peninsula, we love the steakhouse at Four Seasons, Nemare, thanks to their diverse array of plant-based dishes sourced from freshly harvested herbs and greens from the adjacent organic garden. In town, we just discovered Atizo, owned by an inventive local chef. The vegan rosemary chocolate ganache with confit orange is to die for! F a v o r i t e l o c a l s h o p We love heading into Playas Del Coco to find interesting and fresh local fruits and vegetables. B e s t s o u v e n i r s t o b r i n g b a c k One of our favorite souvenirs is locally crafted, small batch, bean-to-bar chocolate from Cata Chocolate in Playas del Coco, where you can also find organic coffee.

Menswear designer Todd Snyder’s sartorial signature can be found in his soughtafter collections, and at Hidden Pond, a cozy Maine resort that features his stylish vernacular throughout the resort’s bungalows.

I love how peaceful Maine is and that there are so many different landscapes easily accessible throughout the state. Hidden Pond is especially amazing because it feels so secluded and quiet, but you’re able to get to Kennebunkport so quickly or visit the beach. The natural beauty of the state is unrivaled and offers endless options when you’re up there. W h a t d o e s a t y p i c a l d a y h e r e l o o k l i k e I like to wake up and have a cup of coffee on the porch while taking in the sounds of the woods. Then I’ll drive into Kennebunkport for breakfast at H.B. Provisions and walk around town. Depending on the time of the year, I’ll usually go to the beach or maybe drive up to Portland for the day. Sometimes, I’ll hit some of the local design studios, like Corey Daniels gallery in Wells, to get inspiration for my next project. L o c a l e x p e r i e n c e s / a d v e n t u r e s w o r t h y o f n o t e Most people don’t know about this, but L.L.Bean actually offers outdoor adventure programs outside of Freeport. W h a t t o p a c k Maine in the summer is one of those places where swimwear and sweaters go hand-in-hand. I think it’s important to have layers just in case the weather changes throughout the day. I would pack a pair of Todd Snyder Montauk Swim Trunks

Their liquor is local and they can mix an amazing cocktail. F a v o r i t e p l a c e t o d i n e If you’re not dining at Earth, the amazing restaurant at Hidden Pond, I like The Tides Beach Club. B e s t s o u v e n i r s t o b r i n g b a c k If you haven’t already bought items from Sea Love, a special plant from Snug Harbor, or some local art, I would recommend selecting a bottle or two from Batson River Distillery. Lift Foils, the company behind the original electric hydrofoil, has released the new LIFT3 F, a line that introduces a proprietary fiberglass blend in two new sizes and features two battery choices, with the full range hitting 100 minutes of ride time. The result is the most stable and user-friendly eFoil made to date. “There’s a certain serenity in getting up and flying over the water,” explains Nick Leason, Lift Foils’ founder, who is also an engineer and a devoted surfer. “The access to power creates a smooth, linear — almost intuitive — response from the body.” Locals can try the LIFT3 F at Lift Foils’ partner retailers across the tri-county area. Those without surfing experience need not worry; instructors take riders through the step-by-step of mounting and riding the boards on calm waters. “A lot of people might think ‘it’s too hard for me to do,’ but I can assure them that I can get them out in 15-20 minutes,” adds Leason. “The idea of getting over the water is more like yoga than surfing. all in the family

Principal designer from Taylor & Taylor creates a Zen-inspired family getaway in Key Largo that combines modern sensibility with ancient influences and a deep respect for nature. BY JEAN NAYAR From top: outdoor design celebrates natural elements; blue and white color story.

M

aximizing their connection with the outdoors has always been a priority for the owners of an expansive condo in Key Largo. So, when they purchased the four-bedroom abode as guest quarters for the visitors who frequent their nearby waterfront home, they wanted the interiors to be in tune with the environs. They also wanted to cozy up the flat with the creature comforts they enjoy in both their primary dwelling in the Midwest and their winter house in Florida. Having worked with designer Phyllis Taylor, a principal of the Miami-based interior design firm Taylor & Taylor, on their winter home in Ocean Reef Club, they knew she would deliver on both scores.

Before starting the project, however, Taylor had to convince the athletic couple to depart from the traditional aesthetic they usually favor. “It works well in their classic single-family homes, but it just didn’t suit the thoroughly modern style of the condo, which they purchased during the preconstruction phase,” says Taylor. Trusting in her expertise, they deferred to her judgment and gave her free rein to turn the stark dwelling — with its odd angles and challenging floor plan — into an inviting getaway. The only nonnegotiable demand was the color. “They both just love blue, and no other color but blue,” says the designer. As a result, Taylor chose indigo, a color commonly used in ancient Japanese textile dyeing methods, as her starting point for the interiors and developed a layered yet restrained ambiance that’s at once earthy, clean, and eminently livable. Inspired by the Asian roots of indigo dye, the designer also relied on the Japanese aesthetic philosophy known as wabi-sabi, which emphasizes both simplicity and imperfection, to guide her approach to the décor. “Since the only color in the home is blue, the rest of it is all

flowing in and out of the home, easy-care furnishings and accents were also top of mind, particularly in the dining area, where the designer topped the concrete base of a bespoke table with a slice of stump wood coated with resin. “It’s a resourceful way to honor nature and embrace imperfection with a custom piece that’s durable and easy to clean at the same time.” Thoughtful touches like these not only delight the owners, who frequent dwelling during the off season for quick trips, golf tournaments, or fishing outings, but also their guests, who sometimes find themselves so comfortable that they’re loath to leave. about texture,” explains Taylor, who deployed neutral, natural materials on virtually every surface. Working with a millworker from Mexico, she warmed the ceilings and walls of the entrance gallery, living room, and adjoining terrace with planks made from fallen Milpa trees found in an old-growth forest in the Yucatán Peninsula. The same wood was used to make shelves in the kitchen, while grasscloth and cork wall coverings add warmth and dimension to the guest rooms. Furnishings throughout, including a collection of beribboned bamboo pendants by David Trubridge and various wicker and woven chairs from Artefacto, also nod to the Japanese reverence for nature and respect for handicraft. “They make me think of the woven baskets that are so common in Japan,” she continues. “You can really see the hand of the maker in them.” With lots of children

scar Carvallo’s creative talents have taken him from Caracas to Milan to Paris to Miami, where his studio continues to attract the most discerning of clients. For a designer who presents at the couture shows in Paris, his list of clientele include celebrities, debutants, and VIPs. The multihyphenate is now adding the title of “artist” to his resume with a recent run of an icon-inspired exhibit at Château des Tourelles in the French capital to prove it. “Art has changed my life. I wake up with the need of painting,” says the accomplished couturier, who also helms a Parisian atelier. “Sometimes, I cannot sleep thinking about the process. Being an artist is being a dreamer, and our goal is to make people also dream.” It’s not the first time Carvallo has made a leap into a new career. “I finished law school. From the law, I went into fashion.” He abandoned law and entered a master’s design program at Domus Academy Milano, planning to live in Milan permanently. However, “life is full of surprises, and we are the drivers of our own luck,” says the Venezuelan native. His fashion career moved him to Paris instead, where he didn’t know the culture or the language. Eventually, Carvallo decided he wanted to move to the

Magic City. “Miami was an experience I wanted to have, and it was fantastic,” says the Renaissance man. “It feels familiar. My family has lived there for many years and, of course, there is the sun and the sea. I miss it so much.” The pandemic motivated Carvallo to move back to Paris. “It is my home now,” he admits. “Europe is the center of art and creation, and I have to be surrounded by inspiration every day.” His inspiration has found a new oeuvre. And this iteration has little to do with fashion. Carvallo is consumed with paintings done in the Fayum technique, synonymous with the Egyptian portraits of the pharaohs. Later, the technique was adopted by ancient Greek artists. Carvallo references encaustic painting in his works, which incorporates melted wax on canvas. It’s a technique later made famous by Jasper Johns. This latest endeavor differs greatly from his couture days. “With fashion, I need a huge team to make it possible,” he explains. “Painting is just the canvas and me.” Fortunately, the dashing creator

/ 63 LIF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA

hasn’t abandoned his fashion aspirations and has managed to weave style into art. Carvallo still works with couture clients all over the world, who are very much part of his process. “I have never had a muse as one person. I think every client I make a couture dress for is the muse of that moment.” That’s why he rejoices in designing wedding dresses. “They are pure fantasy and magic where you have the chance to make people dream,” he adds. Not surprisingly, his fashion spills over into his art. “I usually paint my models from my collections, but they are just a starting point,” Carvallo explains. “During the process of painting the models become magical pharaohs of the first century.” The process is a true fusion of a multitude of his passions that magically transcend geography, style, and, in many ways, time itself. “To be inspired by the present time, that goes back to the past,” he says, “and to finally arrive at a result of the future.” And whether it’s on a canvas or a body, Carvallo’s work is pure magic.

the power of the dark side

The Black Badge Ghost is the most technically advanced Rolls-Royce on the market. To get your hands on one, you have to embrace a new era of “post-opulence.” BY STEPHANIE DAVIS SMITH

ontrary to its moniker, the Black Badge Ghost doesn’t have to be black. In fact, it can be assembled in more than 44,000 colors available on the Rolls-Royce palette. Or even in a bespoke shade you dream up on your own. “Bright ‘pop’ colors like Turchese, Mandarin and Tailor Purple are more and more popular, especially in the tropical environs of South Florida,” says Gerry Spahn, the head of communications for Americas Rolls-Royce Motor. And while you can get one in an array of candycoated hues, the new Black Badge Ghost ultimately celebrates the dark side of Rolls-Royce fans. A chic Darth Vader of cars, if you will. According to the brand, the vast majority of its elite clientele select black. In fact, to create what is the auto industry’s darkest black, Rolls-Royce atomizes 100 pounds of paint and applies it to an electrostatically charged body before its oven dried. Now that’s what we call “uber black.” Kaleidoscopic concerns aside, South Florida is chockablock with what are known as “super luxury consumers.” While these unicorns are commonplace in the Sunshine State, the super luxury buyer is defined by Rolls-Royce as rebellious. iconoclasts of that set — aka Miamians. What makes it so nextlevel? “Using light as design,” explains Spahn, “with the first-ever illuminated fascia extending the feel of the starlight headliner deeper into the cabin.” He also credits the technical fiber with aluminum threads that are woven throughout the cabin and carbon fiber wheels. “It adds a unique exterior complement to the blackened metal finishing,” Spahn continues. The Black Badge represents more than 27 percent of commissions worldwide for the British automaker. You’ll recognize it by its mathematical symbol, dubbed the Lemniscate. The Lemniscate represents potential infinity and is a design found throughout the car’s interior. These posh attributes and those yearning to get their hands on that wheel align into a new cultural phenomenon best surmised by Alex Innes, the head of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Design. The new buzz word for the Black Badge Ghost and the owner in pursuit of one is “post-opulent.” Innes believes there has been a shift toward reduction in the luxury consumer market. He notes that tastes have changed and the ideal patron wants fewer, but better things. Minimalism. Craft. Simplicity. That is lavish restraint. Post-opulent design is subtle, unostentatious, and soft-pedaled, which doesn’t seem to intuitively support the ubiquitous South Floridian motto of “more is more.” However, don’t be surprised to see a neon purple Black Badge Ghost drive around Star Island or Golden Beach. This may not be an option for everyone. But for those into noir, Batman, or Tom Ford’s wardrobe, this is your ride.

In the post-pandemic Empire State, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties is poised for a major success thanks to, in no small part, a new leadership at its helm.

From left: Brad Loe, Diane M. Ramirez, and Steven James

T

here once was a time when Miami was glibly referred to as New York City’s sixth borough. Denoted as a sunny destination filled with visiting thrill-seekers from the North, this supporting role in the Big Apple’s orbit wasn’t exactly balanced. Alas, the events of the last two years have flipped the script on this complementary arrangement, and Miami’s gravitational pull has propped it up to unprecedented levels of appeal. Nevertheless, the connection between the two cities has never been stronger despite the relocation swerve that augmented New York’s landscape in Florida’s favor. Fortuitously, this new world order has come on the heels of exciting appointments at BHHS New York Properties. At the core of the strategy lies a significant brand expansion, likely to benefit from decades of collective experience. “We currently have only 80 associates, but our goal is to have 150 by the end of the year,” says Steven James, the new president and CEO of BHHS New York Properties, who left Douglas Elliman to assume his new role. Bolstered by associates across the BHHS network, this stratagem would ensure success in all states. “There

are some 50,000 BHHS agents across the country. Invariably they will have some NY referrals and vice versa. And that’s our biggest advantage ... keeping business ‘in house.’ Are you really going to hand over a 50 million buyer to just anyone?” Speaking of the ultra-high net worth buyers, the consensus at the NY office is that there are still plenty of them left in the city. Even if their needs have changed. “The secret is, New Yorkers never really left,” explains Diane M. Ramirez, the chief strategy officer. “They may have downsized but, they are still here.” “New York is still a very competitive market,” adds James listing inventory shortage and growing interest rates to the list of challenges facing buyers. “Many are hedging their bets like any good billionaire would. As New York gets stronger, which inevitably is going to happen at some point, I think it’ll probably be a very different story.” These shifting trends present unique challenges for the associates, a fact that is not lost on Brad Loe, the new executive vice president, director of sales, who sees mentorship as a big part of the company’s new charge. “Our style and size are an advantage,” he explains. “What we / 68 LIF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA

bring collectively is a tremendous experience and a personal touch. We intend to know the details of all transactions and will have time for agents to help them build their business.” These efforts may well be aided by all the hallmarks that have come to define the prowess of the parent company. “When I think of Berkshire Hathaway I think of its breadth,” says Ramirez. “There are experts working on systems under this umbrella that are way beyond our ability to comprehend. On our level, we don’t have to try to reinvent a wheel. The data integration at BHHS is amazing and available for those who want to use it.” Of course, the task of reimagining BHHS New York Properties comes with its challenges. “It feels like we work for a start up in the most exciting kind of way,” adds Ramirez describing the strategy approach as “boutique,” where quality of inventory is the point of distinction. “The idea is to work with agents across all states, to grow bigger but not overwhelmingly so. More importantly, we want to be the right size,” James concludes. “And we want to ensure that the Berkshire Hathaway brand is synonymous with NY real estate.”

Astronomic Souveraine, the most complex watch François-Paul has ever created.

I crown affair The Astronomic Souveraine watch is F.P. Journe’s most impressive horological achievement yet. BY DANIEL NOVELA

’ve always been a sucker for a beautiful crown. And in the world of crowns, F.P. Journe is in a league of its own. Case in point, the F.P. Journe Astronomic Souveraine, the most complex watch François-Paul has ever created, which we celebrated during its U.S. debut in Miami at a NovelaWatch Collectors Club event co-hosted with F.P. Journe. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. The complexity is astounding, with 18 functions and complications in a wearable 44mm case. Turning convention on this head, the movement is 18K gold, and the case is stainless steel. The complications contain everything you’d expect from a high complication watch and a few more. Tourbillon and minute repeater, of course, but as the name Astronomic implies, it beckons you to look at the stars above. There is

the sidereal time dial, which allows the observation of the stars, and at the top of the dial a blue aperture shows the sunrise and sunset in a unique curved window following the sun’s path, with metal shutters at each end which lengthen or shorten the days depending on the time of the year. On the reverse are an equation of time and a full annual calendar encircled by the signs of the zodiac. This is where the tourbillon can be admired. It’s a beautiful watch for your friends to see and an extraordinary 2nd astronomical marvel on the back just for you. How did we get to this astronomical marvel? Well, François-Paul Journe’s son, Charles, sketched a watch with a curved opening for the sun’s path; a unique idea, and François-Paul thought it was really cool. Six years of research later, the Astronomic was presented

/ 69 LIF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA

to the world at the charity auction in Monaco known as “Only Watch,” which has become a gathering for the “Who’s Who” of the watch world. It also promptly sold for the record amount of $2 million. The Astronomic Souveraine is much like all the watches François-Paul has produced since he founded F.P. Journe in 1999. Everything is “Invenit et Fecit” proudly displayed on the dial — Latin for “invented and made” at their central Geneva headquarters — and includes the movement, the case, the dial, and the crown. Like all entrepreneurs, it was not always easy for F.P. Journe. When your business plan consists of no market research and only making what you love, the commerce part of the endeavor could be a tough propostion to many. Fortunately, for the many who believed in the project, their faith has been rewarded not only with a beautiful statement on their wrist but an excellent investment, too. F.P. Journe now ranks as a standout independent brand, with secondary market prices many multiples above retail. That is, if you can find one.

T

his is a story about business success. But since it is also a story about wine, it naturally begins with romance. In 1952, in Valdobbiadene, a gently hilly region north of Venice, Count Gaetano Marzotto acquired an underused piece of land. The Romans had grown grapes there centuries before, and Marzotto thought emerging modern agricultural approaches might prove successful. To bless the beautiful project, he named it after his wife. Thus was born Santa Margherita, a name you will recognize especially for its Pinot Grigio, which began in 1961 and has grown to become one of the most successful wine brands of all time. It is a little astonishing to learn that there was a similarly successful bottling even before that — the

company’s Prosecco Superiore di Valdobbiadene DOCG, marking its 70 anniversary this year. The DOCG designation — Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita — is rather unusual for a type of wine most of us designate for quick birthday toasts. Indeed, most Prosecco, vinified from the Glera grape, is grown on flatter terrain; the relatively smallish region that produces Santa Margherita’s Superiore is much hillier and more challenging, creating wines of unusual versatility and depth. “Glera is not a complex grape,” says Vittorio Marzotto, greatgrandson of Gaetano and senior director of Fine Wines for Santa Margherita. “It’s not a so-called Noble or International varietal, like Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, with a lot of complexity and aging potential. It produces mostly a very easy-drinking, fresh, crisp wine. But grown in higher altitudes, it gains some Alpine character.”

By this, Marzotto is referring to the intriguing minerality in his Prosecco, a pleasant aspect that makes the wine versatile with food. The makers go beyond the region’s 30-day aging requirement, often allowing the wine to rest with its yeast for up to 90 days, producing greater creaminess. These factors balance Glera’s inherent aromatic quality, giving the wine notes of orange blossom, peach, and stone fruit. Successful in its own right, the wine has also enjoyed the tremendous U.S. boom in Prosecco consumption in the past decade-plus. In this era of consolidation, Marzotto represents the fourth generation of family ownership of Santa Margherita. He came to the States in 2011, and the company made Miami its official U.S. headquarters in 2014 with a small office in Brickell. Today, the still-growing enterprise is based in South Beach. “Believe it or not, like

/ 71 LIF ESTYLES S O U TH F LO RIDA

a lot of Italians, we all like Miami more than anywhere else,” he notes. That includes his wife and two daughters — a fifth generation who, while “more American than Italian,” Marzotto notes, also speak their parents’ native language and love their culture. Santa Margherita now offers five wines in the U.S. market: the Pinot Grigio and Prosecco Superiore, a Chianti Classico Riserva, a sparkling rosé, and the newest rosé, a multi-year project that Marzotto describes as ”rosé, the Santa Margherita way.” Think red berry fruits and white florals; clean and refreshing with a long finish. “That is our newborn baby,” he says. “I believe in our family’s values. For us, it’s very important to follow those qualitative standards and processes. We never want to hurry.”

If my math is correct, that’s plenty of juice for a romantic jaunt to Little Palm Island Resort & Spa in the Keys, where you can lose yourself on four acres of paradise. Already a boat owner? Vision Marine Technologies partnered with Maclaren engineering to make the world’s most powerful electric motor that can be installed on a boat or yacht. At this year’s Miami International Boat Show, Vision Marine Technologies featured a StarCraft 22 pontoon equipped with the E-Motion 180 Electric powertrain. The silent engine is perfect for a stealthy pull up to Utiki Beach on the Jupiter Inlet Marina for a happy hour or shenanigans at Zuma for sea strutting, sushi, and dancing.

ummer days bring on the promise of new adventures... longer days, warmer nights, and the ubiquitous rosé on ice. Of the many signs of the sunniest season, there reigns the quintessential experience of sea cruising. Whether looking to make a statement or impact, it’s never been easier to do both. Cue the next generation of vessels: luxury boats that are environmentally friendly. Electric- and solarpowered boats make it possible to enjoy the ocean breeze without the noise of the engine nor the smell of diesel fumes. While the ultimate green escape of smooth sailing reigns supreme, for those who prefer more power, any of the exciting array of electric- and solar-powered boats and yachts are just the antidote. If harnessing your inner James Bond suits your style more, the all-electric Voltaire 33Sky, is a thing of beauty. It is equipped with award-winning i3 batteries by BMW and two Torqeedo Deep Blue engines with 50 kW of power each, allowing for maneuvers 007 would approve. According to Voltaire, “the boat can be fully recharged overnight in any regular marina. The optional fast charger feature recharges 80 percent over lunch.”

A new exhibition at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale reveals a master’s influence on Pop Art’s street prince. BY SEBASTIAN PHILLIPS

A

lthough the fact that he emerged from the New York graffiti subculture of the 1980s may suggest a flippant attitude toward established institutions, artist Keith Haring didn’t take the study of his craft for granted. But, like many other creative geniuses, he liked to do things his way. While Haring attended both the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh and the School of Visual Arts in New York City, it was a 1977 retrospective of the Belgian painter Pierre Alechinsky’s work at the Museum of Art at the Carnegie Institute that would prove to be a turning point for Haring as an artist.

From left: Alechinsky’s influence on Haring’s work is found in his expressive lines; Untitled, January 15, 1984, by Keith Haring.

Witnessing Alechinky’s expressive and spontaneous lines on a monumental scale was such a watershed moment for Haring that he returned to the exhibition multiple times, immersing himself in Alechinky’s work, voraciously learning as much as he could about the artist. “It was the first time that I had seen someone who was older and established doing something that was vaguely similar to my little abstract drawings,” said Haring of the experience on the Haring Foundation website. “It gave me this whole new boost of confidence.” That Haring would find common ground with Alechinsky is probably not surprising to those aware of both men’s trajectories. At 95, Alechinsky is the last surviving member of the European avantgarde movement called CoBrA, a group known for its primitive and childlike imagery, as well as its active social and political concerns. Anyone familiar with Haring’s figures and other stylized imagery knows his work was largely influenced by his social activism on behalf of AIDS awareness. All these intersections are explored in Confrontation: Keith Haring and Pierre Alechinsky, an exhibition running through October 2 at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale. “The exhibition definitely seeks to make the argument that both Pierre and Keith were majorly influenced by the gestural brushstrokes of Japanese calligraphy, which when you watch

Alechinsky’s 1955 film on the subject, also included in the show, you see incredible visual affinities between their swift, rapid lines and the linear marks created by our subjects,” says curator Ariella Wolens. “Keith wanted art to be for everyone, as did Alechinsky and the CoBrA artists (Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam artists from the 1940s and 50s) at large.” The exhibition makes obvious the aforementioned rush of confidence Haring experienced after taking in the 1977 retrospective, which manifested itself in the Pop artist’s work via bigger canvases, horizontal paint forms, and the incorporation of spontaneous drips into his compositions. Confrontation differentiates itself from past iterations of Haring presentations by emphasizing the artist’s place within a broader historical lineage beyond American canvas. “We worked closely with Alechinsky on this show, and while I don’t think we can say that Haring influenced Alechinsky’s creative vision or method of working, it is clear from Pierre’s account that Keith’s appreciation of his work certainly affected him,” adds Wolens. “This exhibition’s honoring of the two of them is something that he has appreciated.”

BRIGID PRIO: Trusted Real Estate Advisor How many years have you been a Realtor? I’ve been a Realtor for 12 years but I’ve been “in real estate” my whole life. My mother was a Realtor so I learned the business from her. In 1997, I co-founded reelestates. com, the first video-based virtual tour company in the US. After producing architectural photography, HD video and copywriting for luxurious homes for over a decade, I realized I could combine my unparalleled marketing skills and dedication to customer service with the relationships I established with top luxury agents in the area to serve a greater purpose. What is your favorite property sold and/or work experience? I had the opportunity to sell a beautiful waterfront home in Coral Gables with no bridges to Biscayne Bay. The customers had remodeled every inch, and we’d talked about their timeline to sell it in a few years. We knew we were in the midst of a record-setting market, so I asked, “what if someone made you an offer you couldn’t refuse?” We settled on what price that might be and put our plan in action. We did some staging, took amazing architectural photos and produced an incredible video — which became the content for a social media campaign that successfully brought qualified buyers to the first open house — and I sold it in 42 minutes. What neighborhood/area do you specialize in? As the Cubans say, “un poco de todo.” A little bit of everything! I grew up in Coral Gables and live, work and play just a few minutes from my childhood home. I certainly specialize in the City Beautiful, but my experience expands through Pinecrest, Coconut

Grove and wherever entrusted referrals need me to be. What sets you apart from other Realtors? I believe you “get out what you put in.” I put every ounce of my energy, experience and expertise into ensuring the interests and best possible outcomes for my customers. I want every customer to consider me their trusted real estate advisor and to earn both their business and referrals. I am wired one way: to go above and beyond and pursue excellence in every aspect of the job. I am data driven, do my research and know the market intimately. I use my vast network and relationships to benefit my customers. I have unsurpassed marketing skills, am a great negotiator and show a house like a professional spokesperson. I make my luck by being prepared for every opportunity and challenge. What’s the biggest real estate trend you are seeing right now? We are experiencing the strongest real estate market since data has been recorded in Miami-Dade because of the ability to work virtually. Between no state income tax, warm weather and world-famous beaches, statistics show 700+ people a day are moving to Florida, and it has ignited the Miami market. Second to that is crypto! I sold a multi-million dollar home to a person who made his fortune in Bitcoin and that led me to pursue a certification in crypto transactions. It’s important for me to evolve with the emerging technologies that impact my business.
