Introduction

Welcome to Issue 7 of the #LYNXLife newspaper. We’ve been working hard on a number of different #LYNXLife initiatives and rather than bombard you with numerous emails, we thought we would pull together a special issue to give you an update on all activity to date. So grab a brew (maybe in your new Cannes Lions Healthcare Agency of the Year cup!) and take a moment to read through.

As you are all very aware, earlier this year we were awarded the ultimate achievement in creativity – Cannes Lions Healthcare Agency of the Year! This award is credit to your unbelievable hard work, determination, passion and dedication. It is a huge milestone for our agency, but also a massive achievement for each and every member of the Havas Lynx Group. We want you to remember this moment, and to celebrate, we have commissioned a special edition gold Thermos reusable coffee cup. We hope that it will act as a small reminder of what an incredible team we are, and what an amazing thing you helped us to achieve.

99.75% of coffee cups are not recycled1

In the UK we use 7 million disposable coffee cups every day – that’s 2.5 billion every year.2

Why a reusable cup?

About your coffee cup

With more than 4 times as many takeaway coffee shops in the UK today as there were 20 years ago, the waste is on an epic scale. We’re using and binning at least 2.5 billion takeaway cups a year.

Thermos vacuum insulation technology for maximum temperature retention; stays hot for 9 hours and cold for 20 hours. The lid is made with BPA-free Eastman triton polyester.

Disposable cups are largely made with paper, but they are lined with plastic polyethylene, which is tightly bonded to the paper making the cups waterproof and therefore able to contain liquid.

Please note your cup is not dishwasher safe.

Disposable cups are technically recyclable, something that some coffee companies actively promote on their packaging. But due to their complicated production and the fact they are contaminated with liquid, they are not able to be recycled at standard recycling plants and instead have to be taken to special facilities, of which there are only three in the UK. Meaning less than 0.25% – just one in every 400 cups – are recycled.4

By using your coffee cup, you qualify for the following discounts on hot drinks:2

Recycling reboot

Earlier this year, the #High5ives team met to discuss initiatives for the year ahead. Top of the agenda was the lack of a clear recycling scheme at Havas Lynx Manchester HQ. So to build on our #High5ives activity to reduce our environmental impact, we are pleased to introduce a new recycling scheme to our offices. You will notice that each team now has four clearly labelled bins in their agency:

In the UK over 35.8 million bottles are consumed each day, with 16 million of these failing to reach plastic recycling facilities1

in the marine environment, slowly fragmenting into smaller and smaller pieces which eventually end up microscopic but never truly go away. This means that every piece of plastic that has ever been produced is still with us, in some form.2

Over 150 plastic bottles litter each mile of UK beaches.2

Experts think that by 2050, the amount of plastic in the ocean will weigh more than the amount of fish in the ocean.3

#High5ives beach clean 11th November 2018

The rubbish washing up on the UK’s beaches is continuing to increase, rising by 10% in 2017. About 12M tonnes of plastic litter enters the oceans every year, killing millions of marine animals. Through seafood consumption, people are also believed to be inadvertently eating the plastic, potentially contaminated with toxic chemicals.1

Bobby Butler, Senior Account Executive, Havas Life Whilst on holiday, Bobby was relaxing on the beach in the sunshine, but then he decided to use his time to make a difference… “Whilst on holiday in Thailand, I was taken aback by the amount of litter scattered across the beach. You might expect this considering Thailand is an extremely popular tourist destination, however the vast majority of this waste hadn’t come from the land but from the ocean. Shocked by this level of pollution, and inspired by Sir David (from the most recent ‘Blue Planet’ series), I decided to do something I’d never done before – a beach clean. Armed with a bin bag and donning a pair of plastic gloves, I began to work my way down the beach, collecting as much litter as I could. Along the way I was not only thanked by surprised locals but also joined by fellow tourists who also wanted to clean. After about an hour, I had managed to fill a large bag of small, mostly plastic waste. As inconsequential as this act may seem, if we all did our bit it would make a difference.

Havas Lynx Group beach clean

11th November 2018

After learning what an incredible impact Bobby had (see excerpt above), we want to harness the power of the Havas Lynx Group and clean up our beaches. We have been speaking with a number of local authorities about arranging a beach clean, and although it would have been lovely to clean the beaches during the best summer on record, the time when beach cleans are most needed is winter. So with that in mind, we want you to wrap up warm and join us on our very own beach clean taking place on 11th November at Ainsdale Beach.

At 11am buses will collect volunteers from Princess Street to head to the beach

For those who want to take part it’s on a first come first served basis, and you will need to book a place before 12th October.

Design our bag for life

Christmas campaign 2018

As part of our commitment towards reducing our use of single-use plastics, we are launching a competition for you to design the new Havas Lynx Group bag for life.

This year we plan to support Centrepoint as part of our Christmas campaign, but we need your help!

Whether you’re a designer, copywriter, ideas person – we want you to come up with the design, which will make its way on to our new bags for life. The new bags for life will be issued in November just in time for Christmas shopping. Please submit your ideas to rachel.dobson@havas.com by 31st October.

DESIGN REQUIRED

Homeless young people have different issues and different needs to adults. They’re often homeless because it’s not safe for them to stay at home, or family life has become too hard. We know thousands of young people sleep rough every night, but there are thousands more sleeping on sofas, floors, night buses or with strangers – the ‘hidden homeless’. A safe, warm and stable place to live is the first, crucial step for every homeless young person. Then, Centrepoint help to tackle physical and mental health issues, teach basic life skills and get them back into education, training or a job – this is the recipe for supporting homeless young people into positive and independent living.

It costs just 40p per day to sponsor a room at Centrepoint (£12 per month / £144 per year). That money will: Provide a warm, safe space where a young person can stay Support young people with counselling and practical advice so they can rebuild their confidence Give young people the skills they need to find and stay in a job Teach young people basic skills like cooking and managing their money

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please email claire.harper@havas.com with your ideas as to how we can raise as much money as possible to help support Centrepoint in providing safe places to live, health assessments and plan support for individual mental and physical health needs. Please send all ideas before 15th October 2018.

What you’ve been up to

We love hearing what you are up to, especially volunteering and out of work activities. Here are just a few examples of what some of our team have been doing in their spare time.

The Diabetes Football Community

Charity volunteer day

Bryn White, Account Manager, London

Dave Gorner, Head of I.T., and Neil Williams, Head of Film

Bryn White is an Account Manager in London, but during his spare time, Bryn is also part of The Diabetes Football Community (TDFC). This year, the Havas Lynx Group have partnered with TDFC, a not-for-profit organisation developed with the aim of inspiring, supporting and guiding people with diabetes who share a passion for football. Harnessing the community, they’ve been able to develop the UK’s first all Diabetic Futsal Team who successfully competed against 16 other nations at DiaEuro in Bratislava, Slovakia. This year the UK came 11th out of 16 other teams, a fantastic achievement for their first year at the tournament. We spoke to Bryn before the start of the tournament to learn a little more about TDFC. Can you tell us about TDFC? TDFC is a top initiative. It’s been running for just over a year with the aim to provide diabetics throughout society with a peer support network that can deliver further understanding and enjoyment from football for people with the condition. What’s your personal journey with diabetes been like and how has TDFC helped? I found out I had type 1 diabetes when I was 19, during my first year at Uni. It was a big shock and I didn’t meet anyone else with the condition for years after my diagnosis. It was a very slow individual journey learning how all the many, many variables can affect your glucose levels. Discovering TDFC has been brill. It’s been a great source of advice and motivation. From a disease management perspective, chatting with people in the same boat as you speeds up the learning process MASSIVELY. Is diabetes underrepresented in football? There’s only ever been one diabetic football player in the premier league during its 26 year history, which is pretty crazy. However, there are more and more role models appearing in the sporting world that are showing diabetes shouldn’t hold you back. It was an amazing moment watching Nacho Fernandez become the first person with diabetes to score at this year’s World Cup for Spain. It was an absolute screamer too, the guy’s a legend. On 21st March 2018, Dave and Neil went off to St. Andrew’s Primary School in Ramsbottom to install their I.T. room with our old iMacs. Below, Dave provides a short overview of what they got up to on the day. “It is always good to be able to do something good to help make someone’s life better. It is a mantra that runs through Lynx like letters through Blackpool rock and so it was a joy to be able to use my #LYNXLife charity day to work with our Head of Film Neil Williams and install a number of iMacs in the I.T. room of St. Andrew’s Primary School in Ramsbottom. The highlight for me was the number of small faces that appeared at the window of the room as we worked commenting “don’t they look cool!” And I’m sad to say I don’t think they were referring to either myself or Neil.” We love to hear what the schools have to say – here’s an email sent to Neil following their visit.

Dear Neil, Thank you for the eight Apple iMac computers that you delivered to our school some weeks ago. Our I.T. technician has been really busy re-imaging them to coordinate with our school windows network. Today is the first time that a class has been able to use them and Thomas was one of the first six children that have used the six computers that are now up and running! Please pass on our thanks for the generosity of your company, Havas Lynx, for this valuable addition to our computing resources at school. The children think the big screens and general appearance are amazing. Yours faithfully Mark Taylor Computing Coordinator St Andrew’s Primary School, Ramsbottom.

Eccles Ladies RFC Babs Comoglio, Front End Developer The Havas Lynx Group are proud sponsors of Eccles Ladies RFC. Below, long time member of the team, Babs Comoglio talks about her passion for the team and sport. It’s that time of year again when rugby teams up and down the country dust off their weighted vest, prepare the scrummage machine and get fully stuck into preseason preparations for the year ahead. For Eccles Ladies RFC, the largest women’s rugby team in Manchester, it’s also the time of year when we start the search for new sponsors. The team is completely nonprofessional, meaning it’s up to the players and the clubs to find funds to cover travel, coaches / training and kit. As part of the management team for the club, it is my responsibility to secure sponsorships to help cover the costs of some of these items that allow the team to keep playing week on week. This women’s team holds a dear place in my heart as it is where I spent five years of my life training, playing and competing in the Championship North Cup; the second league in the country after Tyrrell’s Premier 15s. But the club is not just a place to come and play rugby, it is a second home to its players. It’s a place to socialise and meet friends for life, and this is something the volunteers of Eccles RFC hope to maintain. As I said before, Eccles Ladies RFC is completely amateur, so as an ex-player I have endeavoured to keep the spirit alive in other ways. Since retiring from the sport, I have become part of a small group to promote the women’s team and help the club provide the best for its players and members. This season, we desperately needed a new kit, but this can be expensive and although the club tries their best to raise money in the most amazing ways, raising thousands of pounds is tough. We needed a sponsor. It is well-known that women’s sport is growing in popularity but when considering sponsorship deals for amateur women’s teams there is a lack of funding and support out there and it can be difficult. However, it suddenly struck me; Havas Lynx! What could be better than having Havas Lynx as our main supporter; a company that cares about their staff, believes in gender equality, champions physical and mental wellbeing and provides numerous opportunities for their staff to get involved in different sports? Of course when asked, Havas Lynx were thrilled to support the team. Please come down, see what the sponsorship has provided, watch the new kits shine but most of all support this wonderful club. And if you’re interested in getting into rugby, please reach out and get in touch with me! #ForTheTeam @EcclesLadies

Havas Lynx cycles the Manchester 100 – a second time On Sunday 3rd September Richard Weltman, Simon Kemp, James Ashworth and James McClaren took part in the gruelling Manchester 100 bike ride, raising £660 for The Christie. This was a fantastic effort from the team – as this is a challenge for even the most experienced riders. Well done!

Plastic Aquarium Ollie Hirst, Junior Creative, Havas Life Outside of work, Ollie is a keen, disruptive illustrator. You just need to check his Instagram out to see all the wonderful projects he is getting involved in! Most recently, Ollie has been part of a project with Eyeyah Mag called ‘Plastic Aquarium’. Below Ollie shared with us a little bit about the project and a snapshot of his illustration. “This was an illustration for Eyeyah Mag, a platform based in Singapore which aims to teach children about social issues through creativity. ‘Plastic Aquarium’ aims to inspire the next generation to understand, reconsider and evaluate our use of plastic in food packaging and understand its long term consequences. This illustration signifies the decline of coral reefs thanks to the efforts of mankind.” To see more from Ollie head to @olliehirstillustration on Instagram.

Organ Donation Games THANK YOU to each and everyone of the Lynxers who took part in the North West Donation Games 2018. By taking part in the games, we raised awareness for organ donation and we celebrated the life-saving gift of organ donation. If only all charity work could involve giant inflatable obstacle courses with bubbles. Highlights video coming soon. A huge congratulations to Turing who won the games! #LYNXLife 09

#LXAcademy 2018 got off to an incredible start! At the close of the first semester, we’ve had a total of 34 sessions with the average rating of 5.29 out of a possible 6, which shows the quality is unrivalled. This year we updated the programme with a month of bespoke presentation training, a new oncology pillar, plus intermediate and advanced levels on our most popular sessions. With the latest pulse survey revealing that 96% of the company feel well trained, #LXAcademy is clearly successful in supporting our ongoing learning and development, keeping us one step ahead of the competition.

Thought Leadership We’ve had 14 Thought Leadership sessions so far, including Claire Lomas who demonstrated her robotic suit, Hussain Manawer who spoke about mental health awareness via urban poetry, and we saw Sean Adames, Tom Hardy’s stuntman, set himself alight! It’s a tough act to follow. But there’s a number of equally brilliant Thought Leaders lined up throughout October; including Steve Edge who will talk us through his varied career and top tips for success, and our very own singing doctor, Tapas Mukherjee, on breaking the line between success and failure. To see the full list of sessions and to sign up, please visit the #LXAcademy page on the Lynx Intranet.

Mentoring #LXAcademy 2018 saw the re-launch of the mentoring scheme. With a revised pairing process, plus the introduction of internal and external mentors, feedback so far has been excellent and there’s a number of successful mentorships happening across the business. If you’d like a mentor, please visit the #LXAcademy page of the Lynx Intranet, fill in the form with your Line Manager and send it to Hannah Parker, L&D Manager, who will arrange a suitable partnership.

25th October 2018, The Principal Hotel Each year #LXAcademy comes to a show-stopping finale with the #LXAcademy Awards! It’s a chance to review work from the previous year, pitch your best campaigns and aim for a coveted #LXAcademy trophy. This year, the awards are being held on Thursday, 25th October at The Principal Hotel. Further details will follow.

#High5ives – meet the charities

This year we chose to work with Centrepoint, The Christie and Forever Manchester. These charities are doing some fantastic work, and we wanted to share some of their amazing stories with you.

John’s Story – sleeping rough at 15 years old John had a troubled and unstable childhood. His father suffered with mental illness and his mother was abusive. He was regularly sleeping rough at just 15 years old. Centrepoint’s aim is to give homeless young people a future. Their long term goal is to end youth homelessness. They have been making an impact on youth homelessness in the UK for more than 45 years, but this couldn’t have been achieved without the support of their fundraisers, helping more than 10,000 homeless young people every year. We wanted to share with you how the money we raise here at Lynx can have a positive impact on the young homeless community.

How we have helped Centrepoint: Through our spare change, we have funded 2 rooms at Centrepoint which help young people leave homelessness behind for good.

We need your help! Please email claire.harper@havas.com with your ideas as to how we can raise as much money as possible to help support Centrepoint in providing safe places to live, health assessments and plan support for individual mental and physical health needs. Please send all ideas before 15th October 2018.

Since going to Centrepoint, he’s been able to work through those issues with the support of counsellors. Having a safe room has meant he can focus again and even get back into education. John is the eldest of three children. He had a troubled and unstable childhood, with his schizophrenic father leaving the family when John was just four years old. John’s mother would take her frustrations out on her children and as the only boy, John often bore the brunt of her attacks. John’s earliest memory is being kicked hard in the stomach by his mother. He was just five at the time. By the age of 15, John was regularly sleeping on benches or in a derelict flat. He was surrounded by danger, but it was still better than suffering violence at home. After four years of living rough, John’s physical and mental health was in a terrible state. He turned to drink, self-harming and even became suicidal. Eventually, John was admitted to hospital and brought to the attention of Centrepoint. He had his first shower for a very long time, finally feeling clean and relaxed. Being at Centrepoint meant that he finally had a warm, safe room, which John took great delight in keeping clean. He describes it as ‘perfect’. Since being at Centrepoint, John has found having access to counsellors really useful to help him overcome his personal and mental issues. He has taken advantage of life skills classes, which have helped him learn about budgeting, paying bills and cooking. John’s biggest love has been reading, with his desk always filled with books on economics, marketing, physics, philosophy and theology. John’s dream is to become an International Communication and Security Analyst, so he is studying hard to gain A-levels in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He is so grateful that his talent is being nurtured and is absolutely determined to make the most of the opportunity. How we have helped Forever Manchester:

In 2016/2017, through all of their supporters, The Christie charity raised £14.3M via donations which has had a huge impact at The Christie. With the £14.3M, the charity has funded a number of exciting projects and developments to benefit their patients, which included building the Integrated Procedures Unit which opened in 2017 and installing a state of the art 3T scanner in the new MR Suite.

Proton beam research The next exciting venture for The Christie, with the support of their fundraisers (including us here at Lynx), is the new high energy proton beam therapy centre currently under construction at The Christie. The centre, which will be the first of its kind in the UK, has been designed to include a research room so that The Christie can use the proton beam not only to deliver life-saving treatment to patients, but to carry out ground-breaking research. Thanks to all of The Christie supporters, they have raised £5.6M for the proportional cost of the dedicated research room, and the state-of-the-art equipment needed so that they can make the most of this amazing new facility and improve outcomes for even more patients. The new centre is due to open later this year. You can read more about how our fundraising efforts are impacting The Christie: bit.ly/ChristieHelp

Forever Manchester is a charity that raises money to fund and support community activity across Greater Manchester. Their role is to be the champion of people who are prepared to do extraordinary things to make communities thrive.

This year we have raised over £3,500 for Forever Manchester through the Manchester 10k and the monthly tombola ticket sales. If you would like to enter the tombola, each ticket costs £5 and there are some great prizes on offer.

How about a sit down and nice cup of tea? Get the kettle on. Put your feet up. Take a breath. When you’re caring for someone 24/7 there are moments when a bit of ‘me’ time is just what you need. It’s when a nice cup of tea feels like the best thing in the world. But it can only be other people who make that ‘me’ time possible, special people who care for those who care for others. People like the two ladies from Salford who lost their husbands to dementia, and straight away wanted to help others who were going through what they’d been through. Comforting each other, Vi and Jane reflected on their time caring for their husbands. They talked about how a good old sing-song seemed to work wonders. Play them one of Sinatra’s best and, for a few precious moments, they were back in the room. From that one conversation, these two amazing ladies immediately decided to set up a Singing with Dementia group. What better way for them to help others than by getting everyone together for a good sing-along.

Doing our bit for charity through eating! Good Mood Food is a Manchester based catering social enterprise, which delivers the best quality hot and cold buffets and catering services across Manchester. Not only do they deliver fresh delicious food for meetings, they are also part of a local mental health charity, Manchester Mind – who provides a wide range of services to support and empower people with mental health problems – through provision of advice, volunteering, mentoring and counselling (for young people). The #LYNXLife team have tested the produce and can highly recommended it. Moving forwards, where possible, we will be using Good Mood Food to cater for all meetings at Havas Lynx Manchester HQ. Please do let your guests know about Good Mood Food and the good work that they are doing by eating their lunch!

For just £5 a year (yep, just £5) for everyone who attends, the cost of a CD player, and of course a bit of Vi and Jane time, it’s magical. Sufferers remember bits and bobs of their favourite songs, and carers can have a right good laugh joining in or take that much needed ‘me’ time they deserve. Read more Forever Manchester community stories at: bit.ly/HappyDaysForeverMCR

How we have helped The Christie This year we have raised over £2,700 by climbing to the top of Beetham Tower (798 steps!) and cycling 100 miles around Manchester. We also donated 120 Easter Eggs to the staff and patients of the teenage cancer ward.

#LYNXLife benefits reminders Through #LYNXLife we seek to remove barriers and frustrations, as we optimise performance and look to enhance all of our professional lifestyles.

#LYNXCubs

#LXAmbassadors

In August, we once again opened the doors and welcomed in #LYNXCubs. This year was bigger, better and noisier than ever, with nearly double the attendance from 2017. Children aged from 3 to 13 years old had a go at designing their own clothes, created their own super lion as homage to our winning 3 at Cannes Lions, flew drones and ate a LOT of ice cream! Even Gizmo and Maisie, the office dogs, got involved much to the delight of the younger children. It was a fantastic day, but behind all the fun there was a more important reason for wanting to do #LYNXCubs.

This year our Ambassadors have been working closely with the #LYNXLife team to identify opportunities where we can further build on our culture and improve our #LYNXLife. So far this year they have contributed to some brilliant initiatives such as Sausage Roll Day, National Office Dog Day, Pint of Science and loads more! As we are a growing team, we are delighted to appoint Ella Nash to work alongside Jen Woodward, Chris Raffells and Matt Brugge to continue the good work of the Ambassadors!

Our work takes up so much of our time. Parents were able to show their children what they do day-to-day and why they sometimes need to stay late or travel. When it came to home time the kids all agreed that their mum’s and dad’s work is pretty cool. We’re already excited for what 2019 may bring!

Freshers’ Week 2018

Referral fee We are a growing company, and we currently have a long list of new hires needed. You can earn £2,000 for anyone you recommend that we hire (once they pass their 3 month review). If you know of anyone who you believe would be a brilliant addition to the team, please speak to Harriet Sanders or Katy Nagy in the #LYNXLife team.

Our 5th Freshers’ Week is upon us and this year, with a further 35 graduates joining the business, it’s going to be bigger than ever. Freshers’ Week aims to build on the wider company inductions and introduces the graduates to our five core areas of capability; Science, Strategy, Creative, Technology and Client Services. Over the course of the week, they will hear from our internal experts, increasing their understanding of the company, our past work, and our incredible culture. Our new grads also have a great opportunity to start building relationships and broadening their network – not only with each other but with previous grads, the LXLT and the SLT. An exciting introduction to #LYNXLife.

We have received some feedback in the focus groups that people aren’t aware of all of the #LYNXLife benefits. Nice to share

‘TRUST ME I’M FROM PHARMA’ In last month’s PME, H4B Manchester’s Cath Brassington contributed to the article ‘Trust me, I’m from pharma’. In this article, Cath shares her thoughts on how pharma should be looking at the healthcare system in its entirety to build trust with HCPs, patients and the wider public by becoming peers and facilitators of conversation and information rather than just providers of drugs. #High5ives 2018 update

2018 has seen a lot of positive impact through #High5ives. Here are just a few highlights of the change we’ve brought through #High5ives, and a couple of ideas if you’re interested in doing more.

Volunteer day

Street Support [Manchester]

At Lynx we believe in #HelpfulChange, not just in the work we do helping patients and brands, but also in the wider community. Being part of the Havas Lynx Group team, you have the opportunity to take a day to help a local charity / community project.

Street Support’s mission is to make it easier for anyone experiencing homelessness to get the help they need. They connect organisations that provide services, with individuals and businesses that want to do something to help.

You can volunteer for any charity you like, but to make it a little easier for you to identify who needs what help, please take a look at the sites below:

You can find details of charities who need help at: bit.ly/StreetSupport

Friends of the Park Do-it.org Do-it.org lists over 1m volunteering opportunities that are posted by volunteer centres, national / local charities and voluntary groups. Enabling 200,000 people every month to donate their time and build their skills, Do-it ensures that almost 60,000 organisations find the help they need to provide vital services to the community.

These are groups who actively contribute to the management and upkeep of local parks, as well as arranging activities. Anyone can join and give as much or as little time as they want to nurture their park, open space, river valley or woodland. Find out more at: bit.ly/ParkFriendsMCR

Find out more at: www.do-it.org

Speed volunteering [London] To make it easier for Londoners to fit volunteering into their lives, Team London has partnered with Do-it to launch London’s first speed volunteering service. Speed volunteering roles are different from some of the more traditional volunteering roles you may have seen. They make it easier for people to give a little bit of time while still making a positive impact. They all have the following characteristics. – take a couple of hours to complete (no more than six) – are intended to be ‘one-off’ – are available at short-notice – have no significant barriers to volunteering Speed volunteering is a great way to gain your first taste of volunteering. The roles are flexible and there is no need to commit to volunteering with the organisation once you’ve completed your speed volunteering session. Find out more at: bit.ly/SpeedVolunteering
