Office lighting has progressed considerably since the endless banks of fluorescent fittings, strictly arranged in line formation, seen in the office design from the late 20th Century.

Employers have begun to realise that their staff are their most precious resource and that the quality of the working environment has a huge impact not only on attracting and retaining staff, but on increasing productivity and reducing absenteeism.

The realisation that human beings function better under daylight conditions has led to a greater drive to improve the ingress of natural light into new buildings, in conjunction with more advanced solar and daylight-linked control systems. However, there are a variety of scenarios â&#x20AC;&#x201C; older buildings, deep-plan designs, 24-hour working environments â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where employees are cut off from daylight for extensive periods.

The quality of light output from a fitting should always transcend its aesthetic appeal, but as the trend moves to a greater integration of lighting into the architectural structure, lighting systems themselves have become more lithe, streamlined and discreet, largely thanks to the development of the slimline T5 tube. The powerful output of the T5, tempered by sophisticated optics, allow a more even washing of both horizontal and vertical surfaces. The recognition that colour temperature and the dynamics of the lighting system have a profound effect on the health, well-being and productivity of employees is also leading to further crucial improvements. Human beings evolved in daylight, and the cool colour temperatures and mercurial quality of natural light have left their imprint. The discovery in 2002 of a third photoreceptor in the eye (other than rods and cones) has been central to thinking in this area. This photoreceptor allows light to bypass the

This has led first to a rethinking on the trend in past years towards warmer white fluorescent, with a growing emphasis now on cooler, daylight temperatures, even to the degree of adding more blue to the mix which limited studies have shown increases alertness and productivity among employees. But probably one of the most exciting developments in office lighting in recent years has been the emergence of daylight-simulation systems. Using a control system, different temperature white fluorescent tubes, or in some cases, red, green and blue (RGB) systems, combine at varying levels of output to change the lighting from cool to warm white throughout the course of the day, reflecting the changing quality of daylight outside. With its varied meeting rooms, cafes, break-out areas and hot-desking spaces, the contemporary workspace couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be further from the gloomy late 20th Century office environment. Today lighting is a key tool in helping to delineate different areas and to define individuality.

Following the success of the original Officelyte system, introduced in 2008, Concord has now developed Concave Officelyte, a totally flush recessed version of Officelyte, providing an alternative solution to the ‘dropped wing’ design of the original model. While Concave Officelyte introduces a new design concept, it incorporates the winning, patented components that have made the original Officelyte such a success whilst also adding a number of other new features. Concave Officelyte’s unique performance is based on three innovative technologies. Firstly there are the two curved wings, in extruded satin polycarbonate, mounted inside the luminaire above the ceiling line. These are 20% more light transmissive than ordinary polycarbonate and the material does not degrade over time. Secondly, the inside body of the luminaire is lined with a brand-new Japanese micro-cellular foam polyester material, which is >99% reflective and offers >96% diffusion. This means that the new luminaires are ultra-efficient with an LOR of up to 80%. Finally, Concave Officelyte features the same conical multi-prism diffusing panel below the lamp – but here it is twice as wide as in the original Officelyte, for even greater minimisation of visual discomfort glare and homogenous light distribution.

• A ir Handling allows for the luminaires to be integrated into a buildings ventilation system, resulting in installation savings and a less cluttered ceiling • Air Handling modules introduce four air grilles inserted along the luminaire body to provide inlets to the negative plenum, these enable 20 litres/sec of extracted air to be recycled or expelled • Air Handling versions also have an optional four knock-out tabs, each of which allows an additional 3.75 litres/sec of air to be extracted through the luminaire body, allowing each fitting to pass between 20 to 35 litres/sec of air depending on the configuration • Air grilles ensure that the returned air is kept well away from the lamps reducing the risk of cooling and loss of efficiency and light output • Air grilles can be easily removed and washed in soapy water, to maintain the luminaires light output ratio • Supplied complete with 840 4000K Sylvania lamps

Officelyte is an innovative modular fitting that allows the creation of lighting schemes that meet the requirements of CIBSE LG7, using a single type. The elegant prismatic wings protrude only 50mm from the ceiling. They ensure that the ceiling illuminance is at least 30% of that of the working plane and the wall illuminance is at least 50% of that of the working plane, in a typical furnished office enviroment. Glare is also kept below 1500 cd/m2 at angles at and above 65ยบ ensuring visual comfort for occupants of the lit space.

A smaller package makes a larger impact. That’s the thinking that went into the design of Rana Recess. Thanks to 1092 Louvres and the unique design of Rana Recess, fewer tubes can be used to create more, better quality light. For example, three 14 watt tubes in Rana Recess outperform other fixtures using four 18 watt tubes. High gloss aluminium optics with an LOR level of 92% combined with glare levels below 800 cd/m² further add to the fact that Rana Recess is standard setting in efficiency. But the benefits don’t end there: the design of Rana Recess is inspired by the art of Origami where the fixtures are ‘folded’ from one single sheet of metal. This creates a new, striking shape and also reduces the amount of material and energy needed for construction. Since the resulting product is more shallow and compact, the environmental impact of packaging and shipping is minimised as well. In terms of versatility, the shallow, flat form of Rana Recess combined with triangular side panels (allowing installers to simply “slide” the fixture into place) means it can be used in spaces where recess depth is small and access is limited.

It’s simply a question of its distribution and its reflection. And the new 1092 Louvres are a true reflection of Havells Sylvania’s dedication to innovative, ecological lighting solutions. 1092 Louvre optics are made from high gloss aluminium that reflects 99.6% of the light created by the tubes. The light is distributed much more efficiently, with only miniscule amounts being lost or obscured, achieved in combination with the back reflectors. This allows for the fitment of fewer tubes in a fixture. Using 1092 Louvres, the same quantity of light can be achieved with three 14 watt tubes that would normally require four 18 watt tubes.And since the light is distributed in the most efficient way possible, the glare levels of 1092 Louvres are always below 800 cd/m². 1092 Louvres are a new landmark in the lighting fixture market – low glare, high efficiency, LOR levels of 92%, energy savings of more than 40% and flexible, striking design mean that higher performance from less energy and fewer resources is finally here.
