A WISH FULFILLED

On May 5th, The Haven and Mr. John Soderberg, owner of JHS Bookstore in Foley, jointly held a celebration and pet adoption in memory of his wife, veterinarian Dr. Diane Camilleri, on the anniversary of her birth. The event was held at Mr. Soderberg’s books and collectibles store.

Dr. Camilleri was a bright and remarkable woman ahead of her time. A native of New York City, she obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating at the top of her class as valedictorian. She was a veterinarian at an animal shelter in New York City, after which she became a Professor of Veterinary Technology at the City University of New York, a position she held for many years.

Dr. Camilleri had a great love of animals and cherished their two cats, Penny and Shelly. Upon her retirement, she and her husband relocated from NYC to Florence, Alabama, and then to Foley in 2006, where they opened JHS Bookstore. About his wife’s thoughts of The Haven, Mr. S. said, “She was impressed by The Haven’s progressive and effective programs and its “no-kill” status.” As I wanted to do something significant to honor her memory, The Haven was the perfect place for that. I look forward to a long and continuing partnership with The Haven.”

Also, in her honor, the Dr. Diane Camilleri Rescue Fund was established by her husband to assist The Haven with its mission of ending pet homelessness. Donations to the rescue fund may be made to The Haven, specifying the Dr. Diane Camilleri Rescue Fund, and also at the store anytime. An annual adoption event at JHS Bookstore will also be held to benefit The Haven. Michael Graham, Executive Director of The Haven, stated, "We are grateful to Mr. Soderberg for the very generous donation to establish the rescue fund, which will carry on the wonderful legacy of his wife.”
