Richard Gray Gallery ALEX KATZ: FLOWERS NOVEMBER 11, 2019 - JANUARY 10, 2020 Widely acclaimed for his graphic portraiture and expansive landscapes, American artist Alex Katz showcases a new body of Iris oil paintings that continue his dedicated interest in the natural environment. This exhibition highlights the artist’s process by showing Katz’s intimately scaled painting studies alongside his larger works. Here, Katz depicts his floral subjects in tightly cropped compositions, deftly distilled down to their fundamental components. Created at the artist’s studio in Maine, the Iris paintings recall his first encounter with painting en plein air in 1949 at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. Painting studies are paramount to Katz’s studio practice, as he works from life when drafting them in an effort to capture the fleeting inspirational moment. Only after refining the studies to convey the essence of his subjects does Katz translate the compositions to a larger canvas. This technique, poet and critic John Yau confirms, is “Katz’s way of staying true to the shock of the original perception… His subject is the present tense of seeing, not something recollected in tranquility.”1 Within this focused exhibition, Katz’s Irises are depicted in his signature style—flower petals appear as splashes of yellow among broad crisscrossing strokes of blue-green stems, all overlaid on lively backgrounds of pink, orange, or green. Blending formal aspects of abstraction and representation, Katz allows each composition to operate as both an intimate still life and an enveloping landscape that, as author and critic Calvin Tomkins describes, “make us see the world the way he sees it, clear and up close, with all but the most essential details pared away.”2

ABOUT THE ARTIST Alex Katz (American, b. 1927) is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Often associated with the Pop Art movement, Katz began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time has produced an iconic body of work including paintings, drawings, sculpture, and prints. His earliest work took inspiration from multiple facets of mid-century American culture and aesthetics, including television, film, and advertising, and over the past five and a half decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of contemporary life, whose distinctive portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and consistent economy of line. Utilizing characteristically wide brushstrokes, large swaths of color, and refined compositions, Katz created what art historian Robert Storr has notably called “a new and distinctive type

LEON POLK SMITH: ENDLESS SPACE SEPTEMBER 13 - NOVEMBER 23, 2019 Leon Polk Smith: Endless Space features paintings from the artist’s iconic Correspondence and Constellations series which he produced over a fifteen-year span between the 1950s and the 1970s. Characterized by shaped canvases and pressurized compositions, the paintings of this time period have come to represent the most signature works from the artist’s oeuvre. Endless Space expresses Smith’s nimble and daring shift from rectilinear canvases to shaped supports, and from singlepanel works to complex, polyptych installations. Fusing together bright colors at a curved edge, Smith’s compositions exceed the confines of the canvas. “I was fascinated by the interchange of the positive-negative aspect of [Mondrian’s] paintings with no background,” Smith described in a 1966 artist statement. “I was thrilled to think that if I could liberate this quality which he confined to the rectangle into a free form, that I would be able to express the endless space.”1

ABOUT THE ARTIST Leon Polk Smith (American, 1906 - 1996) was a painter heralded for his lifelong commitment to exploring color and shape through minimal geometric compositions and shaped canvases. Born on Native lands, Smith grew up with his eight siblings in a farming community among American Indians of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes. Smith received his primary education in Oklahoma, and later moved to New York City in 1936 to pursue a graduate degree in arts education at Columbia University Teachers College. In New York, he encountered the works of Modernists such as Piet Mondrian, Constantin Brancusi, and Jean Arp; Smith was immediately drawn to the ways in which they harnessed geometry and space, concerns that would remain at the fore of his practice throughout his life. From the mid 20th century onwards, Smith was predominantly seen within the category of geometric abstraction. But as abstract and minimalist painters of the time began to diverge from Modernism, Smith continued onwards, innovating the formal and rational elements of the Modernist tradition. From his first solo
exhibition in New York City in 1941 until his death in 1996, Smith’s paintings exuded a buoyant optical tension—or what critic Roberta Smith would term a “slightly unhinged optimism”3 — that would come to be regarded as central to the foundation of the hard-edge movement. Smith’s work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions at major institutions including the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute (2017), the Brooklyn Museum (1996), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1993). His work also resides in an array of important institutional collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
As Smith’s large-scale paintings reveal an abundance of formal ingenuity, they also contain elements of personal narrative that demand further examination. Smith was born in 1906 to mixed, half-Cherokee parents near the territory of Chickasha one year before it was incorporated into the state of Oklahoma. The artist’s Native heritage and proximity to indigenous traditions provide a nuanced background for the role of space and color within his compositions. With this biographical context, Smith’s abstract expanses thereby reemerge as open roads, infinite plains, and vast skies — vestiges of the artist’s rural upbringing working on his family’s farm and constructing highways. Offering an important frame of reference alongside Smith’s Native identity are his experiences living as a gay man in McCarthy era New York City. Injecting the predominant formal analysis of Smith’s work with queer theories of anthropomorphism, art historian Jonathan David Katz discusses the artist’s painted forms as a coded representation of then-illegal homosexuality, a “redirection of the impersonality of geometry towards the chaos of desire.”2 Between these formal, social, and political readings, Smith’s works adamantly coalesce around one vital certainty — the notion of endless, polyvalent space.

How did you get involved in the interior design industry? I have always loved every aspect of home design. I received my degree in Industrial Design from The University of Illinois and worked in the design and product development field for several years before transitioning to interior design. I had been designing home decor and furniture and it was a very natural transition. I love working with homeowners and families to make their houses their own unique homes. What are a few home design trends that people expect for this Fall? 1. More color in kitchens and bathrooms as greens and blue paint colors and gray stains continue to grow in popularity. 2. Deeper connections with nature, and that takes shape in the home with natural materials like wool and cotton, rustic woods, stone, and house plants move the green of the summer into the interior as the days get shorter and colder. 3. One-of-a-kind artwork, local finds, reused or repurposed objects, with a renewed sense of uniqueness and individuality. Do you have a favorite furniture piece for the upcoming season? As we begin to entertain for the upcoming fall and winter holidays, the party comes indoors and having a functional and inviting dining table is essential. What’s your recommendation for transitioning someone’s home from Summer to Fall? I like to swap out brightly-colored throw blankets and accents pillows with ones that have subdued earth-tones, faux fur, or flannel/plaid patterns.

NICOLE SCHNITZLER Food Writer What’s one unexpected thing you’ve learned by writing about food? I’ve learned that the world of food is expansive, and there are limitless ways by which to explore it—be it cooking, dining, writing, traveling, or beyond. It’s also exciting to me that the media industry is constantly presenting new ways by which to cover food, from service-oriented listicles and recipes to personal essays and deep dives into a hyper niche topic (e.g. David Foster Wallace and “Consider the Lobster”). What made you want to be a food writer? Food, for me, is about connection. Don’t get me wrong—my eyes still widen at the sight of rhubarb crisp in June or short rib ragu in January, and I will happily wait in a 25-minute queue for my favorite croissant—but, ultimately, I am always more taken with the people—those behind the recipes, those serving them, and those beside me at the table. Food prompts us to engage with others and to ask questions—I wanted to be a part of that conversation, and help to spark that dialogue for others, as well.
Is there a cuisine you enjoy writing about the most? I’m a huge fan of sushi and Japanese cuisine, and I’m always trying to learn more about Japan’s culture and culinary philosophies. Katana, Arami, and Kumiko are some of my very favorite spots in the city now. I also love cocktail culture and appreciate the chance to embrace classics and riffs alike at venues like Billy Sunday, Sable, and The Matchbox. What neighborhood in Chicago would you say has amazing but underrated restaurants? I love dim sum, so when I’m craving an inspired meal, I head to Chinatown. Every time I go, I feel like I’ve stepped into a different world, and I’m always impressed by how many flavors I can discover in a one-hour sitting.
How has your writing changed the way you eat at restaurants? Writing, in all respects, has encouraged me to be more observant of and curious about the world. This extends to my role as a lover of food, and presses me to examine every dining experience with a heightened awareness. Sure, that rabbit tortellini was good—but why was it good? How long did they cook it to perfect that toothsome first bite? What was the component in the sauce that majorly amplified the dish’s acidity, giving it balance? Are there any quintessential Chicago restaurants you’d recommend to first time visitors? Some of my all-time favorite spots remain unchanged: Lula Café, Boka, Fat Rice, Parachute, and, for an all-out splurge, Oriole. What inspired you to start your fundraising project, Doors Open Dishes? My older brother Daniel is autistic, and when the state budget crisis jeopardized funding for his group home and workshop programming, I was compelled to do something to help. A project incorporating food seemed only fit— Daniel adores eating, and I’ve been working in the food industry in some capacity for more than a decade. The specific plan dawned on me one day as I watched him create one of his favorite at-home snacks: a bowl of frozen mixed vegetables, topped with Kraft Parmesan Cheese. It’s always struck me as an odd combination, but that day, it was the makings of a mission: What if a chef took this dish and turned it into something delicious for diners? Our organization was born, and to date, we’ve had partnerships at restaurants like Cindy’s, Nico Osteria, and The Bristol. What kind of impact do you hope this project will have on the Chicago restaurant scene? We hope to continue to raise awareness of the needs of Daniel’s community, and that we can do so through ongoing partnerships with this city’s wealth of talented chefs. Thus far, it’s been an honor to witness the friendships that have formed between our chef partners and these individuals, and to watch as they discover their mutual love for food. In breaking bread we break barriers, and I hope that Doors Open Dishes can continue to foster this philosophy
