Interior design sets the tone, mood, and ambiance of a room. And, there’s no room where that’s more important than one with such a specific purpose as the bedroom. The quality and length of your sleep cycle can be heavily influenced by everything from the light location and levels to the wall color and artwork. Sleep success has psychological roots that interior design can either help or hinder. Making that connection between design and purpose can help you get the full seven to nine hours of sleep you need every night. And we’ve got some tips to help.

SLEEP-ENHANCING COLOR PALETTE

Cool neutrals—the grays, whites, and pastel blues and greens—don’t overstimulate the eyes and calm the mind and body. They’re a favorite in the bedroom because of their psychological impact.

ONBOARD NATURE The barrier between the natural world and living spaces continues to thin. Time spent in nature reduces stress and anxiety, which nature-inspired design can also do. There are obvious choices like artwork that directly depicts nature in the form of landscapes, photographs, and sculptures. But, nature can enter the room through more creative and subtle means as well. Lamps, rugs, pillows with floral motifs, or organic design elements with shapes and colors of nature can relax the mind and body too. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen with their soft textures and earthy vibe simulate the calm of a nature walk. Natural elements don’t have to be soft or visually soothing to benefit sleep. Brick, stone, sand, and houseplants can be beneficial too. They also open the door for self-expression and a unique take on what it means to blend the indoors with the out.

FOCUS ON THE BED As the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom, the bed is often, though not always, the focal point. It should also be the most inviting space. Soft textures, luxurious pillows in all sizes, and throws that add dimension create a bed that’s hard to exist. The design should also have the practical in mind. Yes, extra pillows make you want to jump on the bed, but make sure there are enough functional pillows that you can keep your spine aligned while you sleep.

However, when choosing a color palette, you also have to take into account your personal, ethnic, and cultural experiences and preferences. Any color with which you have a negative connotation could potentially affect your ability to fall asleep. A color, with which you associate peace and calm even if it’s bright red, could benefit you. The key is to create a palette that reduces stress and calms your mind and body.

CONTROL NATURAL LIGHT Nature in the bedroom is a good thing. However, there are certain aspects that need to be carefully monitored and controlled because of the way they affect the sleep cycle. Natural light, for example, can suppress sleep hormones. Whether it’s sunlight from an early summer morning or moonlight in the winter, natural light is absorbed by the eyes and sent directly to the circadian region of the brain where it triggers the “awake” signal. Bedrooms with a wall of windows need sufficient window coverings to block out all light at night. Artificial light needs just as much consideration. Dallas is now home to some of the most famous art collections in the world. Individuals who have played a key role in putting Dallas on the international art scene include Howard Rachofsky, Deedie and Rusty Rose, and Marguerite Hoffman. Howard Rachofsky is someone who’s had a significant impact in elevating Dallas’ art and cultural presence. Over the past 40 years, Rachofsky has built an impressive collection of artwork - accumulating about 800 pieces that span several movements. For years, when Dallas art patrons were keeping their impressive works hidden in their

By Lauren Cornman grand estates, Rachofsky decided to completely change the rules by bringing residents into his home to view his artwork, according to an interview he did with Artsy. Anyone from school children to adults was invited into his translucent glass home to absorb the cultural history. Later on, he established The Warehouse, which opened in 2012. While Dallas art collection has grown significantly over the past few years, so have the number of galas and events honoring the fine art community.


John Runyan, a respected post-war art adviser says the difference is tangible. He says, “The best gauge for me is when you go to Art Basel and they are talking about Dallas.”

In the 1980s when he first began collecting artwork, he went from buying famous brandname pieces from artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Degas - to working with an art dealer in NYC to collect art from contemporary galleries. In 1999, Rachofsky invited some of the town’s wealthiest patrons into his home for a charity auction called Two by Two. The first charity raised $100,000 and since then, has been a success in raising $75 million for The Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR) and the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA).

D Magazine reports that “a large number of top-notch museums and exhibition venues and active, ultra-affluent collectors have put Dallas on the international art map.” While the number of art collectors grows, experts emphasize “what’s missing is the community of local artists and dealers that would help make Dallas a truly global, art powerhouse.”

It’s also credited with turning several Dallas residents into full-fledged patrons of the arts.

“Dallas is one of the largest and most sophisticated collector markets in the world, and most people do not even realize it,” says Scott A. Barnes. CEO, founder, and chairman of ArtBanc, a local firm that offers global collection management and sales services.

As part of Dallas’ massive growth in the art community, the Dallas Art Fair is now entrenched in the Dallas community and will be welcoming its 11th annual art show in April.

Fort Worth is experiencing a creative boom led by DIY spaces like fwblackhouse, Art Tooth, Latino Hustle, Art Luck, and Mananaland.

These art gallery spaces are only a few out of over thirty new spaces that have opened across the Dallas Fort Worth area. With each year, the audience response is better with an influx of galleries and international artists and companies bringing their work into Dallas. A few major institutions that have opened include The Goss-Michael Foundation, The Power-Station, Dallas Contemporary, and the Nasher Sculpture Center. What is your outlook on the current housing market There really isn’t a typical buyer per se, in that our pricing bands and neighborhoods span in Dallas? many different mindsets and lifestyles.
