The setting is his invented Hofmann University, named after eponymous Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann, who discovered and first ingested LSD in the mid-twentieth century.

Gallery KITAI has been dealing Japanese contemporary Sumi(Japanese ink) art called “Sumi-ism” and other contemporary art since 1998 in Tokyo Japan. At the LA Art Show, Gallery KITAI will showcase the works of seven Sumi-ism (Sumi is ink in Japanese) artists and two painting artists (booth#1301). As a special project, a huge masterpiece of the Japanese calligrapher CHIBA Sogen “3.11 Requiem and Revival”, which was exhibited at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 2018, will be exhibited at LA Art Show 2020 (booth#65). This work will be exhibited for the first time overseas. In addition, live performances by CHIBA Sogen will be held at the venue. He will recreate his factory at the LA Art Show 2020 and create various artworks for a few hours each day in front of his huge artwork “3.11 Requiem and Revival”. LA Art Show attendees can watch his work in progress right in his factory. He will showcase various techniques at times he will write very small characters as in the work “3.11 Requiem and Revival” and at other times write in “Spiral Splash” carve seals and so on.

Peter Lorimer and John Campbell from PLG Estates are real estate pros who are completely tuned into LA’s luxury market. We heard from them about what it’s like to work at PLG, their key to success, and more! I am sitting here today with Peter Lorimer and John Campbell who are both real estate agents with PLG Estates, in the glorious City of Angels. However, both of you are originally from the UK. How did you guys end up in California? I moved here because I, in a previous incarnation, I was an actor, and it just seemed the natural choice. I’d become a big fish in a small pond back in England. So I came to Hollywood to see the dream all the way through, which led me to the wonderful world of real estate, which was always a second passion and my real job on the side. I was a successful record producer back in Britain, and I too was lured by the bright lights of Hollywood. I came over here in 1993 and continued a very successful career in music which culminated in over 30 number ones on the Billboard Club Charts, 25 number ones on the Music Week Club Charts, and then I retired and got into real estate, which has been absolutely, monumentally good to me. And the birth of PLG came after I was the number one Keller Williams agent in LA. Now I get to work with fabulous, wonderful creatives like JC here every day.

I like how it’s always fluctuating. ​So we have just closed out 2019 and people had said t​ here’s going to be uncertainty. Will house prices keep going up? Will there be a drop? I personally think LA real estate is reasonably bulletproof. We predicted a strong market through to the end of the year, through to next year, and that has been the case. Even if there had been a drop and the market had changed then there’s money to be made by smart investors on all sides of it. Whether it’s up, down, or in the middle, there are things to be done. So that’s what I like about it. It’s continually moving, but if you move, if you pivot, and duck and dive with the punches, you can still do a smart investment and make money for your clients. And that excites me. I definitely agree. What excites me and keeps me engaged in the market is the fact that it’s always changing. It’s a constantly evolving machine where every day is different. It keeps me on my toes and I am intrigued with the variety of real estate. Every single day is such a different smorgasbord of loveliness which keeps me perky.

Wow, so you both began your careers as entertainers. What then drew you to real estate?

What is it like to work at PLG - an edgier more technology forward and content driven group?

I did my first transaction when I was 21 years old, which is 30 years ago. By default, I bought a house for my aging parents. But the house did pretty well over the next few years and as a young lad it made me realize, for the first time, you could make passive income from real estate. That experience was what first drew me to it, and it’s been very good to me ever since.

We are the pirate ship. We’re a mixed bag, a very mixed bag. But constant through all of it is a lot creatives coming together to a very supportive environment. I enjoy coming to work every day. We have a bunch of offices all over LA and I love that because I’m all over the place. But there’s always an office I can get to. But it’s all about support which starts at the top. Genuinely, if I’ve got an issue or a problem I may ask 10 partners for advice and vice versa - that support is always there. I really haven’t seen that anywhere else. And I do believe we’re on the cutting edge of technology. We beta test a lot of the new technology for the market, and I like being that one step ahead. I could go on, but I’ll pass it to you.

The truth of the matter is, I was in the music business for a long time, and knew that the music business was going to change irreversibly around the turn of the century. So I wanted to get into something new. I’d been in music since I was 16 years old. And just really by chance I realized that my mum’s house was a lot more than homes in LA, and my brother’s house in Australia was a lot more than homes in LA. So I thought, shit, I’m just going to invest everything in LA because I think it’s going to take off - due largely to the internet and people moving to LA as businesses were becoming more global. That was kind of the best thing I ever did. It was the best brain wave I ever had.

What keeps you engaged and excited about the real estate market?

Adding to that sentiment, rather than following footsteps, we like to leave them. We look around corners to see where the market is going to be, not just where it is. We utilize technology, skill set, and data to service our clients above and beyond the way regular real estate agents service clients. It isn’t just about technology, it’s about gut feeling and knowing whether a good idea is sound and in the best interest of your

clients. PLG is also about blending customer service perfectly with technology but not relying solely upon it. At the end of the day, our clients want to look us in the eyes and be confident in the decisions we’re making. So it’s a kind of a blend of all of the above, but the guiding star here, the North Star of everything is: what is absolutely the best interest for the client? That is the North Star of every decision we make. Then we support it through skill set, technology, and the ability to predict where the market is going, not just where it is right now. You both create a lot of content whether its youtube, instagram, or podcasts. Why do you believe it’s so important to create your own content and stay on top of social media? So I think the real estate industry has changed so dramatically over the past decade - all industries have. But the great differentiator in an industry such as real estate and other giant industries like banking and insurance, is that there is a lot of, dare I day, vanilla-ization where everybody looks and feels the same. Whereas having a powerful and unique and identifiable digital footprint makes you stand out from the crowd. So not only is it important for us as real estate agents, it’s important for the listings that we represent. With marketing in Los Angeles, everybody looks the same. Everybody looks and feels the same. So if you can create digital platforms for yourself as an agent and your clients properties that look and feel a little bit different. Perhaps you differentiate yourself by doing a vlog, or show property that’s getting staged, or maybe it’s doing a documentary of a current build. This might look like taking the time to explain why certain colors have been chosen in a room to enhance the natural light rather than just kind of your dog and pony boring old stuff that everybody does. So we train ourselves to stay on top of digital trends and to create new ones. Brilliant. And just as a little add-on to that: we have a lot of clients within the gated community environment and we just had that exact conversation with one of them. Out value, how we differentiated from everybody else, is that the agents working the same marketing plans, postcards, ads in the paper, etc.is also digitally marketing with social media, email blasts, all featured above the aforementioned digital vlogs, videos, etc. And that’s how we stand out from the crowd. And that is why we’re doing so well in the community, I believe.


How has your background in the entertainment industry influenced the way you market and sell these luxury properties in gated communities? (Peter’s being a DJ, John being an actor) Yeah, I just think our background, as we’ve stressed ad nauseum, is entertainment based so we are naturally visual people who believe It should all be on camera, it should be video, it should be digital. And obviously coming from a creative background it’s very easy and second nature to us. And many of our clients also come from that artistic hollywood background as well, so they get it. Having been in entertainment created the edge more than just your local community flyers and postcards out in the area. Content creation reaches you nationally, internationally, and beyond. I think our niche of representing a lot of people in gated communities was born from our entertainment background and our connection to people of kindred artistic spirits. That is where some of our first deals within the gated communities came from. Then we discovered that people that live in these gated communities in Los Angeles have a different mindset. It’s a mindset that we completely relate to, and that we completely connect with, because of our former careers. The mindset and goal is privacy and security. Understanding the priorities of our gated community clients is what has propelled our success there.

What are a few things you attribute to your success in becoming leaders in LA’s luxury real estate and gated community sales? So I attribute some of our success in the luxury market, and especially in gated communities, to being disruptors of the industry. A lot of the guys that are dominant in these markets are known to not reinvent the wheel and they’re approach is a lot more old school. A few postcards to their database, etc. I feel we’re disruptors. So we come in, we’ll bring in a team of ten, drones, drone video experts, top tier photographers who are doing editorial, stylists who do everything from buying and staging pieces to arranging the fresh flowers. We always put together a very slick team. We’re all on the same page, everybody’s opinion counts, and everyone’s an expert in our little field. But we are disruptors because our pictures and videos don’t look like anybody else’s. We had offers coming in today from the video alone - they’ve not even seen the place, which is a great first step. We are moving with and in front of the time and ours is a more modern approach than those who stick to the traditional strategy which is ultimately less effective in this generation.

We have represented some of Los Angeles’ biggest celebrities and It’s not just luxury, it’s luxury blended with privacy which is an art from within itself. Being able to handle a client’s needs when they tend to be terribly busy people. They are also painfully private people for obvious reasons so representing them and finding buyers with similar mindsets is something that me and John have gotten down to a science.

Just to kind of jump in on that, I think using the word “disruptor” really fits because the way that other agents approach selling a house has been the same way for years and years, if not decades. And rather than looking at the four walls and a roof that we’re selling, PLG actually look at a home as media project. So it isn’t just taking pictures of the living room, of the swimming pool, of the master bedroom. We want to thread a narrative through the media using sophisticated techniques such as drones. Hire an architectural photographer that works for Architectural Digest. The story is told through design and staging. So it isn’t just a case of putting a wide angle lens and a flash bulb in the corner of a room to take a picture. We want the potential buyer to not just buy in to the house itself but buy into the lifestyle it represents. Like a magazine.

community lifestyle is a little different to the regular luxury market even. What are some of your goals for the near future? How does PLG help you accomplish your goals? My goal is always to be of great service to all our clients, now and moving forward. Of course we want to do more deals than the year prior while maintaining customer satisfaction. The greatest thing anyone can say about us, especially when we’re not in the room, is what a great experience they had - how we had their back - their interests over our own even, and that they had fun along the way. It didn’t have to be boring, stuffy, and stressful. They actually enjoyed the journey and got the job done. Best price, best terms, hopefully. Yes, all that with a smile. My dear old dad once said to me when I was a young man, he said, if you can have a job that you love then you will be in the one percent. And being an owner of PLG Estates is something that I’m incredibly passionate about. When I fuse that with my other passion, which is selling in gated communities with JC, I creates a perfect blend of everything that I want to do with my life on a daily basis. Gated communities are sometimes overlooked by the real estate industry, whereas speaking for John and myself, we find them to be some of the most exciting real estate in Los Angeles, partially because it’s some of the most private. So we know how to cater perfectly to the clientele that live in these communities, because we live and breathe every street and every community in the greater Los Angeles area. And using the techniques that we deploy here at PLG estates, we are light years ahead of the competition when it comes to marketing and progressive techniques to find buyers who sometimes come the farthest corners of the planet.
