Looking Ahead to the Hawaii INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Spring Showcase

When you think about the heart of America’s film industry, your mind likely goes to places like Los Angeles, New York City, and Atlanta. However, the American film industry is a massive, widespread powerhouse, and several cities and states play a vital role in the industry. One of them is Hawaii, which is the site of one of America and the Pacific’s most highly regarded film festivals. The Hawaii

International Film Festival, or HIFF, is a major event that spotlights highly-regarded and talented filmmakers worldwide, and the HIFF’s upcoming Spring Showcase is set to be an exciting offshoot event. The Spring Showcase is a smaller version of the film festival but is still a major cause for excitement for the Hawaiian film industry. It will feature works from some of the top creators across North America, Asia, and the Pacific, with unique works that spotlight diverse perspectives. Throughout its history, HIFF has specialized in highlighting works from the Asia-Pacific that might not receive the same spotlight at festivals like Sundance or Tribeca, and the Spring Showcase will continue this mission. This year, the Spring Showcase will take place in a hybrid format, meaning that some parts of the film festival will be screened in person, while others will have virtual screenings. The Spring Showcase will take place from April 6th to 14th in-person, with the Consolidated Theatres

Kahala in Honolulu screening the selected films. From April 15th-24th, the virtual portion of the event will begin, with films screened through computers. Regardless of which way you are watching the films, it is sure to be a memorable experience that shows off works from incredible artists you may not have discovered otherwise. The Spring Showcase will feature a curated selection of over 20 films from various creators. There will be works from Hawaiians, Americans, and people across Asia, with no limit on the subject matter. It will be an enlightening and enjoyable experience for attendees, and the filmmakers will be present for panel discussions and Q and As, so audiences can interact with the people whose works they’ve watched. The Spring Showcase doesn’t draw out the same crowd as the primary HIFF event, but it still brings many film lovers to Hawaii to enjoy a great show. The HIFF is the premier film festival in the Pacific, an annual event typically held in November. It has been running for over 40 years and draws out some major names in the film industry. Famed critic Roger Ebert had a close relationship with the festival, and it has had a unique rise by spotlighting

creators from around the world. There are several different sections, like the Pacific Showcase, which highlights Pacific Islander filmmakers, the Made in Hawaii section, and the Spotlight on Japan section, which are directly intended to give a platform to different filmmakers from around the world. The HIFF and the Spring Showcase will feature films in a wide variety of languages, although they will be accompanied by subtitles. If you are a lover of global cinema, this is the place to be. Even if you can’t make it to the sunny shores of Hawaii, you can still purchase tickets to the virtual components of the Spring Showcase to get a similar experience. The Spring Showcase is an incredible event put on by the Hawaiian International Film Festival every April. It is intended to give film lovers something to look forward to in a gorgeous area and as a way to shine a light on incredible and talented filmmakers from around the world.
