Originally trained as a figurative painter, Kline was an exceptional draftsman. Unlike other postwar artists who sought out European precedents, Kline embraced the urban landscape of New York City and industrial scenes of Wilkes-Barre, PA. Marked by a distinctly realist approach, the street scenes, interiors, and portraits from this period show Kline grappling with subjects and techniques, offering rare insight into the artistic process and emergence of one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century.

On the occasion of Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, Galerie Fabian Lang (Zürich) and Espacio Valverde (Madrid) are pleased to present a site-specific solo presentation by Elena Alonso consisting of handmade wall panels, wall sculptures and a series of new paintings bringing together the artists’ main gestural concerns in her practice - architecture, design and drawing. The references to the history of architecture and design come from a problematic thought about the construction of gender and the idea of the integrity of bodies. In her work, one is confronted with a meticulous framework of counterpoints held together by a powerful symmetric structure with allusions to body parts, nipples, phalluses and other ambiguous body curves.

Cosmic Series by Yvonne Pacanovsky Bobrowicz (1928-2022):

Our booth features the first comprehensive presentation of the work by the late pioneering American fiber artist Yvonne Pacanovsky Bobrowicz (1928-2022). It is focused on her iconic Cosmic Series, a knotted monofilament work that expresses the artist’s preoccupation with energy fields, constant motion of matter and its interaction with light. The Cosmic Series was first presented at the 14th International Biennale of Textiles in Lausanne Switzerland in 1989, and later collected and exhibited by the Art Institute of Chicago and Philadelphia Museum of Art. Pacanovsky had a seven-decade career that began at The Cranbrook Academy of Art, included studying with Anni Alberts, and collaborating with architect Lou Kahn.

SAPAR Contemporary works with international artists who span three generations and five continents. They engage in global conversations and develop vocabularies that resonate as strongly in Baku, Almaty and Istanbul as they do in New York, Berlin, Kiev and Mexico City. Their artistic practices vary from meditative traditional ink painting to writing programming code; what connects them are the artists’ capacity for empathy, insight, and imagination, their whimsy and generosity of spirit, as well as the rigor and depth of their studio practice. For Art Basel Miami Beach 2024, Gomide&Co presents a selection of works ranging from artists who were exponents of the Movimento Neoconcreto [Neo-Concrete Movement] of the 1950s in Rio de Janeiro— such as Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Pape, Lygia Clark, and Ivan Serpa—to artists who were in some way influenced by them, whether working with abstract and geometric investigations, researching themes related to them or exploring the vast possibilities of using of color. The selection especially highlights women artists from Brazil and neighboring countries, three of them who are participating in the current Venice Biennale: Paraguayan indigenous artist Julia Isidrez, Brazilian painter Beatriz Milhazes, and Brazilian sculptor Sonia Gomes. In dialogue with them, there will be a wall with never seen before works by Mira Schendel. Canonical, Mira Schendel was a great investigator of abstraction, its techniques, the word, and the use of color. The selection also includes contemporary artists such as Jac Leirner, Teresinha Soares, Lucas Arruda, Leonilson, and others.

Alongside the selection, Gomide&Co also presents a Kabinett dedicated to the work of Miriam Inez da Silva, bringing together a strong set of paintings from the 1970s to the 1990s. Born in 1937 in Trindade, a city in the Goiânia metro area that came into being in the wake of miracle reports, Miriam Inez da Silva drew upon her childhood for aesthetic references that would later become recurrent in her works, including clerical and mythological elements. In 1960, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she continued to pursue the Fine Arts studies she had begun in Goiás, honing her woodcut skills at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro with concrete artist Ivan Serpa as her teacher. A chronicler of Brazil's modernization processes, Miriam's paintings depict aspects of Rio's socio-urban fabric, including scenes from popular festivals and domestic scenes, delving into malice, transgression, religiosity, and sexuality.

Two 8-foot bronze sentinels by Rose B. Simpson straddle earthly and spiritual realms by representing ancestors as knowledge keepers.

Atsushi Kaga’s The Full Moon in October (2024) draws on Japanese iconography from Buddhist offerings made to the moon.
