There is something special about receiving a new plant for your home or workspace. One of our favorite plant people is Kathryn from The Potting Bench Plant Boutique. Kathryn has her license from the Florida Department of Agriculture Division of Plant Industry – so if you have any plant-related queries – ask away! According to The Potting Bench owner, “I love my vegetable, herb, and tree garden, but I really enjoy my exotic indoor and outdoor houseplants. I take small clippings and propagate a large variety of houseplants in order to grow new ones!” A magical gift could be a fairy plant or a shooting star hoya! For an extra affordable holiday present, attend one of the Potting Bench’s Plant Swaps, where you can trade with other Polk County plant lovers. Check their social media to see where else you can find The Potting Bench this season (like the Winter Haven Farmers Market). We hear they’re working on opening a brick-and-mortar location too!

WHY SHOPPING LOCAL MATTERS
By shopping locally, you are directly contributing to your local community. Your money is going straight into your city – helping it to thrive.

BEER FROM A LOCAL BREWERY
For the craft connoisseur on your gift list, consider picking up a growler or crowler of their favorite beer. A few breweries we suggest checking out (if you haven’t already) are Grove Roots Brewing Company in Winter Haven, Swan Brewing and Dissent Craft Brewing Company in Lakeland, Front Page Brewing Company in Bartow, and the Florida Brewery in Auburndale. If you don’t know your giftee’s favorite beer, try community favorites from our readers. Grove Roots has a breakfast coffee stout
called 6 am Pickers that won Best Polk County Beer in this year’s Best of Haven. Grove Roots has growlers and crowlers available for purchase. Growlers are neat because they usually have the brewery logo (a nice touch for a keepsake local gift) and can be brought back and refilled. Swan Brewing’s number one IPA, Straight Outta Lakeland, won Best Polk County Beer in our Best of LKLD awards. To-go crowler cans will be available at Swan Brewing throughout the season. COMMISSIONED POEM FROM ORANGE BLOSSOM POEMS
Scottish poet Carol Ann Duffy said, “You can find poetry in your everyday life, your memory, in what people say on the bus, in the news, or just what’s in your heart.” Maybe we’re a bit partial because Lakeland-based street poet Dr. Diana Álvarez-Hughes publishes a monthly poem in LKLD, but we think her words are an especially thoughtful present. Her old Sears Citation typewriter has been the vehicle for many a beautiful poem from Diana’s mind to ink on paper. What are her services? “Give me a topic and I’ll give you a one-of-a-kind poem.” Love, loss, silly stories – she does it all. Check her social media to see what markets and pop-ups Orange Blossom Poems will attend and to sign up for her workshops.

Optional: garnish with apple and a cinnamon stick. Please drink responsibly, 21+ only.
