It hardly takes a World Cup every four years to remind sports fans the passion soccer invokes around the globe. That love of “the beautiful game” is exactly what the Tropics organization is built upon, Whether it be professional or amateur soccer, adult or youth, men or women, in just two short years, the Tropics have quickly become the driving and defining force for fan-friendly and passionate soccer in Lakeland and Polk County. Starting with the professional Florida Tropics – who will start their third season in the Major Arena Soccer League in early December on SYKES Field at the RP Funding Center inLakeland – the exponential growth of the organization has been staggering, with reach now from the Gulf coast to suburban Orlando. In 20187, the Tropics added the Lakeland Tropics of the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League, and then merged with Lakeland FC to become the Lakeland Tropics FC, one of the largest youth soccer organizations in Florida with almost 3,000 registered players.

Earlier this year, the club announced a partnership with Pinellas County United FC to create the Florida Lady Tropics SC who played this past summer in the Women’s Premier Soccer League, just a division below the top level National Women’s Soccer League. And finally, the club organization extended its youth umbrella by partnering and affiliating with Celebration Youth Soccer, which became Celebration Tropics soccer. The visionary behind the Tropics passion is Dr. Panos Iakovidis, CEO and Board President of Bond Clinic, who says the last couple of dizzying seasons are just a beginning. “There is a great vision and passion for what role the Tropics and soccer can play not only in Lakeland but in all of Polk County. And that passion happily is not only coming from our side, but throughout the community from businesses, government leaders and of course our ardent fans,” Dr. Iakovidis noted. The PDL club, which for the second straight season finished third in their division, just missing out on the playoffs, experienced

bigger crowds and better play this summer at historic Bryant Stadium. Fans are central to the Tropics, with on field autograph session after every arena and outdoor game which allows supporters to get up close and personal with their local soccer stars. Players gathered with fans for watch parties during the recently complete World Cup too. Behind the scenes, many wheels are turning that could bring the sport to a whole new level in Lakeland. “Even though 2017 and 2018 was filled with exciting announcements about how the sport and the Tropics were becoming part of the community fabric, there are people locally who understand how the sport can not only improve our quality of life but be a vehicle for more economic development and opportunity for the city and county.” Dr. Iakovidis added. “We are so grateful for the passion and vision community leaders are already showing, and with others we know that will be coming along for this great ride in the coming months, Lakeland will become a focal point of soccer in central Florida from the amateur level to the top professional level, and every level in between.”

Airport Chasing Airlines Lakeland Linder Airport has landed a U.S. customs station and some major aviation tenants, including the NOAA Hurricane Hunters. But it still has no passenger service. Airport Director Gene Conrad aims to remedy that. He’s working with Volaire Aviation of Indianapolis to attract a major passenger airline to Lakeland. The pitch to airlines: Polk has a customer base of 4,000 people who fly out of other airports daily.

Publix at Grove Park Rebuilding The 58-year-old Publix store at Grove Park Shopping Plaza will be torn down and replaced with a modernized and slightly larger supermarket that will include a pharmacy and liquor store. There’s no word yet on when construction will take place. The store will expand into spaces currently occupied by the Mail Room, which is closing, and Chamberlin’s Natural Foods, which is moving to another spot in the shopping center.

Spotting Lakeland Musicians

Disney Crews Spent as They Filmed

Fire Dept. Seeks a Few Good Women

Lakeland has its own playlist on Spotify. It was curated by local musician/producer/studio owner Aaron Marsh and includes only Lakeland artists. As of the end of July, the streaming service’s LKLD list included 41 tracks that collectively provide 2 hours and 40 minutes of eclectic listening. To find it, launch Spotify and search for LKLD.

The Walt Disney Pictures team that filmed “The One and Only Ivan” in Lakeland in June spent $134,365 in Polk County, Visit Central Florida says. The numbers were provided to the tourism agency by Disney’s production supervisor. Included: $38,115 on 363 hotel room nights, $31,250 on local cast, $5,000 on catering, $5,000 on miscellaneous expenditures and $55,000 on locations and associated fees such as police and security.

The Lakeland Fire Department wants to ignite change by recruiting more women to become firefighters and emergency medical technicians. The eight current women firefighters constitute 4.7 percent of the force, which is a tad higher than the national average, but department leaders say it’s not good enough. They’ve produced a video as part of their recruitment efforts. View it at lakelandgov. net/ignitingchange

A fire on the roof of the 10-story Lake Morton Plaza downtown forced the evacuation of all 128 residents of the retirement tower June 26. Alternative apartments have been found for all residents, and it’s still not known when they’ll be able to return. Crews were brought in to blow out smoke-tinged air that permeated most of the apartments and repair water damage on the top floor.

Get Ready For Elections This Month

Land Deal Will Benefit Large Park

Delivery Competition Heats Up

Lake Morton Dodges High Apartments

Don’t let Aug. 28 sneak up on you. That’s the date of the next elections. The ballot includes party primaries for U.S. Congress, the Florida Legislature and County Commission. There are also non-partisan races for Polk School Board and circuit judge. You can get to know the candidates better by following news sites such as LkldNow.com and attending candidate forums such as the Lakeland Chamber’s Hob Nob Aug. 14. Details, tickets at the chamber website.

Plans to develop a massive urban park west of downtown Lakeland got a boost when city commissioners agreed to sell 2.3 acres and some right of way to the private developers of the Bonnet Springs Park. The appraised value and asking price of the triangle just north of the Florida Tile site: $424,601. The buyers plan to offer several parcels to the developer of a commercial/ residential/office complex, and proceeds from that sale will go toward park construction.

Last month we wrote about local competition between companies that want to deliver your groceries. Now there’s more competition among companies that want to deliver restaurant meals to you. Uber Eats came to town in July, joining Bite Squad and Grub Hub. Check their websites to see which restaurants each company delivers.

Homeowners in the Lake Morton historic districts have succeeded — so far — in fighting proposals to allow taller apartments and condos near their one- and two-story homes. City commissioners exempted the neighborhood from new rules allowing multi-family buildings up to 55 feet tall in much of the city. But they’re still considering taller buildings in the Garden District, which is east and a bit north of Lake Morton.

We love our pets! They’re our companions, best friends, fur babies, comedians & confidants. We love them as if they were our own children. Pets can change your life. Our family has 2 rescue dogs and I can’t imagine life without them. They both have different personalities and perform different jobs. For example, our dog Lola, is a protector. She will carefully sniff around the perimeter of wherever we are, to keep us squirrel-free. I’m happy to say, that after 12 years, we have not been attacked by any squirrels. Our second dog, Mochi is our psychiatrist. At the first detection of sadness, she will sit next to you. If you’re super sad, expect a deep stare, inches from your face. If that doesn’t work, she pulls out the big guns. Dog kisses on your cheek, arm, whatever it takes to get you to smile. She has pulled us out of darkness more times than I can count. Both dogs have changed our lives, and continue to do so. All they want in exchange? Food and a back scratch. I’d say we’re getting the better end of the deal. Here are more stories of amazing dogs that have changed people’s lives. – Amy Sexson

WORDS BY HIS HUMAN Samantha

Walter: Instagram Famous! often practice this with a lunge whip or flirt pole to get them to follow the bait. His favorite inside toy is a stuffed cow that rattles and crinkles like a water bottle. Toys that make noises are his favorite and help him be able to chase after them. Walter has come to work with me at the clinic everyday since he was ten weeks old. It has been great socialization for him. He goes out for playtime with his friends and then naps the day away in the office. Despite being blind, he can chase and fetch fairly well. We play a modified version where we throw the ball at the ground, so he can follow the bouncing noises. What’s special about Walter? Walter’s ears are very unique to him. They will always give away his current mood. They lay flat when he is relaxed, stand up when he is curious, and point straight forward when he is feeling devious. When he comes running from another room with his ears pointing straight, we know he just did something bad! How has Walter changed your life? Walter has quickly enveloped our lives since we got him. He has redefined my expectations of a “special needs” dog. I am constantly amazed by how comfortable he is and quickly he adapts to his surroundings. My husband and I went to a “dining in the dark” restaurant in London on our honeymoon and it gave us a new found gratitude for vision. I am astonished to see my blind dog conquer the world with no vision and no understanding of why. I am inspired by my vision-impaired dog. A lot of people have a negative connotation that surrounds the idea of a vision-impaired dog. A video of his playing at my work went viral on several websites when he was a few months old. The video shows him bouncing back and forth, trying to keep up with the other dogs but not sure which way to go. I didn’t realize his video went viral until someone told me it was on Reddit’s front page. Unfortunately, it was removed shortly thereafter because it was “sad content.” I have seen a lot of comments on his videos where people feel bad for him. I don’t think people understand how capable Walter is though. Despite not seeing the world, he still enjoys it and brings joy to his daily routine. He still stirs up trouble around the house and gets into things like a puppy should. Walter developed cataracts when the rest of his litter was learning to see, so impaired vision is all he has ever known.

How long have you had Walter & where did you get him? We picked Walter up when he was ten weeks old. I contacted the National Borzoi Rescue Foundation and they gave me the information of a breeder in Washington that had an accidental breeding. The breeder was not aware that he had vision problems when she sent him to us. There had been no health issues with her dogs, so the cause of why he has cataracts is unknown. Tell us about Walter! Walter is pretty picky, so we rely on an assortment of treats. His favorite are the Lamb & Apple WellBars. Walter is spoiled rotten with toys. His favorite toy is a lunge whip with a plastic bag tied to the end. We use this in our yard where he is able to hear the crinkle of the bag and chase it. Borzois commonly compete in lure coursing, which is chasing after a lure. They will

WORDS BY HER HUMAN Jhoanna

Coco: Award winning kisser & yoga master Tell us about Coco & where did you get her? Coco is an American Bulldog. Alapaha Blue Blood bulldog to be exact. There were only 350 dogs of her kind at that time... she just turned 10 in July. I didn’t even know what breed that was until she was given to me by her previous owners. She was 6 months old and only 30 lbs when I acquired her. She came from a family in Puerto Rico who couldn’t keep her because she did not get along with their other dog. They bought her from Georgia (apparently that’s where the breed came from) and they flew her to Puerto Rico. I was living there at the time and was so lucky that they asked me if I knew anyone who would be interested in their beautiful girl. They called her Miss Universe. And now she’s my universe. Tell us about Coco! Coco begs when we’re eating. She’s got those expressive puppy eyes that is hard to resist. She loves... oh gosh, where do I start? She’s not vegetarian, that’s for sure. She loves hard boiled eggs, broccoli, and egg rolls (when they fall to the ground). Oh, and rice and peanut butter! She’s got to my bag of potato chips as well. Her favorite toy is a squirrel - a fake stuffed squirrel. And it’s old, but she always goes for that plain, ugly thing. We play hide and seek around the house. I’ll have a treat in hand and she’ll sit and wait to look for me until I yell, “Where’s Mommy?” She used to love hiking in the rainforest of Puerto Rico. Since we’ve moved to Florida, she loves the dog beach of course, but her favorite place to go is Grove Roots and Downtown Winter Haven’s Saturday morning market. Grove Roots because people pay her attention. Downtown WH because she gets to eat popcorn from the ground next to the people that sell it. I literally have to pull her back to the car whenever we go to these places. People make fun of us.

How has she changed your life? She has changed my life and those around her so much. She brings joy and love wherever she goes. She gets a lot of attention because she looks different and has a calm demeanor about her. You know that quote, “be the person your dog thinks you are.” Yeah, she reminds me to be a good person. To live in the moment, to enjoy a good nap. To be grateful for little things and to love unconditionally.

I teach yoga at Inside Out Yoga in Winter Haven and sometimes I bring her to class. She has got Savanna (The relaxation part in the end) to a tee! She sometimes snores, but it adds peace to those around her helping them relax and sense her peaceful vibe. She has won several dog contests including best kisser (2 years in a row!) and musical sit. She knows several tricks such as sit, shake, roll over, nap, speak and open book (lays on her back). Her big lips fly like dumbo during a car ride. It’s hilarious!

I am divorced and my ex and I had her for years. When we split up, I told him to get anything, but I’m keeping Coco. That’s all I wanted and I was willing to fight for her. Luckily it didn’t have to turn out that way, but that’s how much I love her. Her previous owners still check up on her and they are so happy she is spoiled rotten and taken care of. I am so blessed to have her in my life.

What’s special about Coco? Coco is like my child. She is well behaved. All pet owners says their dog is smart, but really, Coco took only 3 days out of 5 in boot camp training. She doesn’t need a leash to walk. She is popular with my friends through Snapchat because they love seeing her bark and terrorize the mailman. Daily. 19

Rudy: Marketing guru & security specialist What are Rudy’s special skills? Rudy is best at marketing. People love him. I have regular customers that come in and don’t even say hi to me, they just ask where Rudy is. Rudy doesn’t live at the store, but he’s there pretty much everyday. In fact, it’s so routine that I don’t even need a leash when I park the truck. Rudy knows what to do and where to go and he does love it here. Sometimes you’ll see posts about his newly discovered sleeping spots on the G Vintage Market Facebook page, customers try to figure out where he’s at. He also gets up and greets some people, he’s very friendly, he has lots of friends that come to the store. Rudy likes to hang out with me even when I’m working out in my gym. He gets mad when I don’t take him. When I go to the grocery store, I leave him at home and he just barks and cries at the door for me. His favorite snack is a piece of lunch meat off my sandwich. It’s probably not good for him, but he loves it. The funny thing he likes is yogurt, I think it’s funny. Whenever I’m eating it, I give him some without the fruit and he loves it. He doesn’t really play with toys, he has them, but he takes them places and leaves them there. He’s not your typical dog. He’ll chase after a ball but he won’t bring it back, which is really funny. But Rudy’s all time favorite treat is ice cream. And it’s the only way to get him to take his medicine. Rudy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure which requires him to be on medications for the rest of his life. The ice cream makes the medicine a little easier to go down. I’m happy about that. How has he changed your life? Being single, and with the kids gone, pets give a lot of meaning to people. It’s just like having a kid, it gives you a reason to get up in the morning and to do things. A lot of the times, I’m here at the shop by myself, driving to and from, and he’s always right there with me. I even work a part-time job in the evenings and I bring Rudy with me. We drive a big John Deere tractor through the groves and I’ve placed a little carpet by the console inside just for him. He loves it.

Tell us about Rudy! Rudy is from a pet store at the Lakeland Mall back in 2010. He is a registered, full-blooded Pomeranian. Rudy’s favorite thing to do is to spend time with me. Everywhere I go, he goes. He does love coming to the store, G’s Vintage Market, where I have just under 9000 sq ft for him to explore. Everyday he finds a different spot to lay in. Most of the time, he’s sound asleep laying on the floor. It’s cute when a customer walks by and gets startled when they learn he’s a real dog. He opens his eyes and it surprises people. I always kid the people and tell them that the security guard is asleep again! Others try not to wake up him when they pass by, but I tell them not to worry, he’s a highly-trained security guard and he’s scanning you right now!

SPCA Florida

With an extensive background in marketing, animal rescue, and volunteerism, SPCA Florida’s new Executive Director, Shelley Thayer, was ideal for the 39-year old nonprofit. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Thayer was introduced through a friend to Best Friends Animal Society. Her planned two weeks of volunteerism turned into five months. From this time volunteering, she said, “My whole life changed.” Though she hadn’t thought of working with animals as a career possibility, Thayer has always had a heart for them. “I’ve always had a love of animals. That never went away.”Before this life-changing trip to volunteer after the hurricane, she had always helped her local Humane Society by fostering and fundraising. She has since, worked with Best Friends Animal Society for four years where she actually wrote their animal rescue guidebook. From there, she worked as the Executive Director for Cat Depot in Sarasota for nine years. She is the past president and current board member for the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations (FAAWO). Towards the end of her time with the Cat Depot, SPCA Florida approached her to consult with them on catteries, a free-roaming cat room system, which the SPCA has since adopted. When the Executive Director position came open for the SPCA, it was too perfect to pass up. “Now I’m able to work with cats and dogs which I love, and a great team and I’m finding a wonderful community,” she beamed. Thayer, who moved to Lakeland with her own three rescued cats and one rescued dog, has big

plans for the organization and the animals under their care. The SPCA takes in animals from all types of situations. Some are surrendered to them, found abandoned, have to be given up for financial reasons, rescues, or in particularly sad cases when their owner passes away with no animal care plan in place. Thayer said, “That’s the saddest one for me because these are animals that were loved and well taken care of for many years and sometimes if we’re full and the Humane Society is full, they end up at Animal Services. If Animal Services is full, it’s a terrible tragedy to end their life like that.” She is currently working on a program around lifetime care, making plans ahead of time so that should something happen to the owner, the animal will be taken care of. To address the financial hardships that some pet owners face, “We’re working on safety net programs now to help these animals stay with their families, people who love them.” The SPCA is a huge advocate for spaying and neutering your pets. If you didn’t see the other side of things, you might not understand why that is important. The Executive Director explained that along with stray animals that are not spayed or neutered when animals have unplanned litters, owners sometimes abandon them. These circumstances are rough for the mother and the litter, often ending in the suffering or death of an animal. On that subject, she said. “If every person helped, we would not be in the situation we’re in - CONTINUED ON PAGE 22 21

today. Even though the situation is improving for the animals, we are their only voice. We are their only help.” “I know that Polk County, in particular, has a lot of pride in taking care of their own here, at least that’s what I’ve learned in the three weeks that I’ve been here,” she smiled optimistically. “That makes me very hopeful that we can turn our situation around in Polk County because we do have an extremely high euthanasia rate here.” “We have assistance for free spay and neuter for those who need it,” she said. “There’s no reason not to spay and neuter your dog or your cat so that they don’t have to go through an experience like the ones that I’ve seen.” Giving an animal a spot in your family by adopting them is, of course, a wonderful way to impact that animal’s life and the SPCA. Outside of adoption, because we don’t all need twenty cats and dogs no matter how bad we want them, there are other ways to help the SPCA. Donations and fostering are huge for the organization. Specifically, monetary monthly donations help to keep the SPCA, which is a sizeable operation, moving smoothly. Every dollar goes towards the animals in one way or another, but there are needs that most people might not consider. “The infrastructure is something that no one ever thinks about that we need a new door, or we need a new laptop to work. Those kinds of things we’re always struggling to find money for,” Thayer said. The SPCA is right now desperately in need of a new roof.

havenmagazines.com

Adult volunteers are also a current need for the SPCA. Though they have many high school age volunteers that do a fantastic job, adult volunteers that are able to keep a consistent weekly schedule, even if it is only one or two times a week, are something every department at the SPCA is in need of. For the role she will play in the future of the SPCA, Thayer explained, “Part of my focus is on best practices, that we’re doing everything possible that we can for the animals and that we’re doing it correctly – that no matter what their background, they’ve come in here to be pampered, to be treated well, and then to go to their new home.” “I’m looking at enrichment,” Thayer said. “Many of these animals have been in horrific situations. Some come from really terrible situations like hoarding or abuse. We want to let them know that everything is going to be okay, they’ve made it to a safe haven and not only are they safe, but they’re going to be pampered a little bit while they’re here.” To adopt, foster, volunteer or donate, visit the SPCA website or give them a call. Haven now has a donation box for the SPCA at our office. If you’re in town and you want to make a difference in the lives of these animals, stop by and donate! ARTS Let’ s take the pups to a park! Dog parks provide a place for your dog to get plenty of exercise. Ideally, they will learn social skills by meeting with unfamiliar dogs each time. And, it’s just fun! Lakeland has 2 parks for your fur baby to run leash-free with her friends: •

The City has plans for a third Dog Park to come next year – Central Bark. It will be located in downtown Lakeland right across the street from the Lakeland Fire Department. What should the humans do while the dogs play? Kevin Cook, Director of Communications in Lakeland has a few reminders. “Please pick up after

your pet. We have had a real issue with our newest dog park, Dog Leg Woods. Even though there are waste bag dispensers strategically located in the dog park, there are some pet owners who don’t pick up after their pet.” It is so important to pick up after your dog. Not just because someone can step in it, gross! Animal waste may contain harmful bacteria which can be transmitted to humans. Also, stormwater carries germs into our waterways. Nobody wants that, so be nice and clean up after your dog!

The County operates 4 dog parks, so if you’re driving outside of Lakeland with your four-legged friend and he just needs to run, try one of these:

The city works diligently to keep the parks looking their best. “We have had a very wet summer so far with record rainfall. We have had to go into Dog Leg Woods and do some drainage repair to eliminate an area in the BIG DOG section of the park that had standing water.”

Kon Tiki Taco

Chris Sexson and Josh “Bump” Galletta fill us in on their upcoming event: Kon Tiki Taco What can people expect from the Kon Tiki Event? Chris: Plenty to drink and eat with great craft tiki cocktails and street tacos. Kon Tiki Taco is about having fun, sharing with friends, and doing something different. It’s a cocktail party! Our friends at Cob & Pen have put some excellent tiki drink recipes together. We will have some classics and a few new drinks to try. Bump: This is going to be a rad event with a really fun vibe! Tiki drinks by our friends at Cobb and Pen and Swan brewing, Concord coffee, amazing tacos by Publix, music by DJ Jenks, the coolest photo booth, plus so much more (with a couple of surprises to top off the night)! Everything you need for a fun, chill night out! It will be a great night to relax and hang out with your neighbors and friends.

havenmagazines.com

What kind of tacos?

What was the inspiration for the event?

Chris: We will have four different taco stations. Without giving away all the details, we will have Brisket, Pork, Fish and a vegetarian option. The culinary chefs at the Publix cooking school have nailed it with the tacos. Publix will also be providing a dessert station as well. You will not leave hungry...

Chris: This has been an event I have wanted to do for a while. Tiki drinks are all about summer and are really fun over-the-top cocktails. And, who doesn’t love a good taco? There is a little backstory. As a kid I used to go to a movie theater in Dayton, OH called Kon Tiki. I saw Star Wars there in 1977. The theater and the movie made a big impression on me. A couple years ago while having a tiki drink, I thought Kon Tiki Taco would be a great event... Here we are.

Why did you want to be involved with this event? Bump: Getting involved with this amazing event was a no brainer. I love anything vintage Hawaiian/ surf culture. We hit the beach every chance we get, so why not bring a little of the beach to Lakeland.

Hope to see you thereChris Sexson csexson@scmginc.com Bump Galletta www.bumpgalletta.com Purchase tickets for $25 in advance at centralfloridatix.com, or $35 at the door.

Benson’ s Canine Cookies There’s nothing like a freshly baked beef liver or chicken cookie, am I right? For dogs I mean. Benson’s Canine Cookies has been in the freshly baked holistic dog cookie business for a collective 22 years. Current owners Debbie and Ron Lange purchased the business from its original owner on July 1st of 2014. At the time, the woman had owned Benson’s for 18 years and created the recipes herself. Named after her dog, Benson, who had pancreatitis and not a long-projected life expectancy, “She started cooking at home and experimenting with a low-fat restricted diet and came up with the cookie recipe which was his treat. He lived to be 18,” said Debbie Lange. The founder of Benson’s was growing older and ready to sell the business. She mentioned this to Debbie who was a shopper at the store and the stars aligned. Now, four years in, Debbie is passionate about providing dogs a treat that uses only human grade ingredients like Smuckers all natural peanut butter, ground white chicken, Butterball ground turkey, fresh produce from Publix or the local produce stand, fresh eggs, no preservatives, dyes or extra seasonings, all prepared with love by Kitchen Manager, Etsuko. When the Lange’s first purchased the business, they completely remodeled the inside, taking out the carpet so pets can shop alongside their human pals, and generally giving it a cheery makeover. The Benson’s staff has a collective 30 plus years of experience, including that of Floor Manager, Pam Sweeney. Pam’s experience with both customers and their pets dates back to her ten years employed by the original owner. “She cares passionately about the dogs and the customers and brings a joyful spirit to work

everyday!” said Debbie. Known for their fresh baked dog cookies, Debbie discussed the recipes, “We’ve added and we’ve tweaked some of her recipes a little bit. Some of her recipes are exactly the same.” Some of their flavor additions include pumpkin pie, carrot and honey, apple cinnamon and grain free options for dogs with grain allergies. The most popular cookie flavors are chicken, beef liver, and pumpkin peanut butter. The soft dog cookies are made fresh daily with the flavor selection posted on a board. Whatever isn’t sold that day, is placed in a dehydrator to pull the moisture out making for a crunchier treat. If Fluffy has a birthday around the corner, Benson’s makes fresh baked birthday cakes for dogs using their cookie recipe. They are available in a heart or bone shape and a variety of flavors. Another item Benson’s makes that is popular with the pups is ChicLicks. A single source ingredient of chicken gizzards, Debbie explained, “It’s like a potato chip for dogs.” “I’m really happy that we can provide people with healthy alternatives to what you just get off of a big box store shelf,” expressed Debbie. While they still have a wholesale side to the business, they like their products to be in small, independently owned stores. Currently, Benson’s cookies are at local companies Love & Fluff and Dog Sense Obedience Training, as well as stores in Key West, as far west as Texas and as far north as Virginia. “That’s where my heart is, with the local family-owned business,” said Debbie. Their fresh baked cookies aren’t all you’ll find at Benson’s. Their store is stocked with dog and cat products of all kinds – food and water bowls, bandanas, grooming products, and more. “We offer a lot of very minimal ingredient products so there’s not a lot of extra stuff,” she said regarding the dog foods they carry. Most of the products they carry come from the U.S. “We do make a few exceptions for that when we investigate a product and find that it’s really a great product,” she said. One example is a minimal ingredient, GMO-free product from Italy called Farmina N & D Formula. “Almost all of the products we carry as far as the food and the treats are from 28

independent, family-owned companies such as Fromm. Fromm has been in business for over 100 years, five generations of family, they’ve never had a recall, and it is manufactured in Wisconsin.” Other brands like Pure Vita, NutriSouce, and ORIJEN were carefully selected because they meet the Benson criteria of having a recall-free history and being independent brands. Debbie encourages her customers to read the ingredients on their pet food. She explained that the first ingredient should be meat and should not contain wheat, corn, soy, animal by products, or rendered fats. Who tests the Benson’s recipes? “I have five dogs at home who don’t mind testing anything I bring home and letting me know right away if they love it or not,” she laughed. All five dogs are rescues, a cause dear to Debbie’s heart. Not only does she support the SPCA by having a donation box for them on her checkout counter, she is a member of the Women’s Giving Circle (WGC). The WGC throws different events, such as one coming up on October 11th called SASS (Saving Animals, Sip, and Shop). The event raises money through vendor booth and ticket sales all of which go directly to the SPCA. Last year they raised $4,000 which went to build a storage shed that house the SPCA food and supplies. This year they hope to raise even more to go to the Parvo Unit at the SPCA. Benson’s is also a supporter of Zelda’s Rescue, Husky Haven of Florida, the Humane Society, and other small rescues. If you bring your furry friend into Benson’s for a free cookie (every dog that comes in gets one), you’ll see an adorable portrait of Debbie and her dogs. The photo was taken by Woodys Photographics, a pet photographer that sets up shop at Benson’s once a year so you can have professional photos of your puppy pals too! To further cater to her canine clientele, every three months, mobile doggy dental company Canine & Feline Anesthesia-Free Dentals LLC comes to Benson’s to clean cat and dog teeth, anesthesia-free for only $165. For more information about a puppy photo or dog or cat teeth cleaning check out the Benson’s Facebook page. “I do have a passion for animals,” Debbie said, “and I love what we do here and the relationships we build with our customers.” (Two-legged and four-legged customers that is.) Azalea Park – an Independent Senior Living Community It was all smiles as a game of putt-putt golf was being waged by the resident competitors in Azalea Park’s atrium. In fact, it was all smiles throughout the entire building. An airy atrium adorned with live greenery, a private dining room for family gatherings, and an expansive community dining space make up the common areas downstairs. On the above floors is a game room with a ping pong and pool table, as well as tables for friends to crack a bottle of wine open over a game of cards, a beauty shop, a library (which is organized and tended to by a resident/ former librarian), chapel, and exercise area. What’s not to smile about? Azalea Park’s General Manager, Frank Adam, the staff, and the residents see to it that their facility is nothing short of ideal for the twilight years of residents and peace of mind for their families. From New Jersey originally, Frank was passionate about the service industry from an early age, starting as a dishwasher at 16, and eventually working in food and beverage for eight years in the Navy. After other service industry managerial positions over his career, Frank worked as the Food and Beverage Director for Walt Disney World for eight years before joining the Azalea Park team. After leaving Disney, Frank admitted when approached with the idea of working in the independent retirement community field, “The only thing I knew about it, was my mom was put into an independent community and during the last years of her life, she loved it there.” “Now, I can’t see myself ever doing anything else. The relationships we build with the residents and their families, all the staff members – the whole cliché of ‘it’s a family,’ but it really is,” he said.

havenmagazines.com

A scenario that Frank described as heart-wrenching when coming on as General Manager, was seeing residents upset about having to leave their home at Azalea Park to go to an assisted living facility or memory care lockdown. “One of the things we agreed to as a team here was figuring out how we could keep them in place. How can we keep them here so they don’t have to go to an assisted living, so they don’t have to go to a nursing home or even a lockdown memory care?” Now Azalea Park has selected independent caregivers so residents can remain in place by choosing their own increased care when it is needed. Often, people don’t want to leave their homes to go to an independent living facility. This transition is made all the easier by the Azalea Park staff and residents. From tours to trial stays, everything is done to make a resident feel like a respected individual in their choice to stay. When someone decides to move in, every staff member spends time with them. Frank Adam is involved every step of the way, the executive chef will also consult them about any food intolerance or allergy, or anything they’d like to see on the menu. The maintenance tech will be introduced to hang any photos, adjust shelving, or install grab bars. They’ll meet the activities coordinator, the bus driver, and everyone else involved in making their stay a comfortable and happy one. Once a move-in date is established, an ambassador will be assigned to the new residents to help them get acclimated to the community. The ambassador is matched based on the personality of the new residents whether that be boisterous and extroverted or quiet and shy.

When it comes to senior citizen fun, Azalea Park doesn’t play around (pun intended). Wii bowling, putt-putt golf, bean bag baseball, live entertainment every Saturday and more. They even travel out into the community for activities like festivals, concerts, and wine tours. For dining options, they offer residents an expanded menu including a first choice, second choice, resident’s choice, and healthy choice. If none of those are desired, they always have chicken, hamburgers, grilled fish, and have the ability for their Executive Chef to prepare anything for them. As resident safety is a priority, they offer a Great Call device, a button that can be worn around their neck or as a holster that if pushed will connect them to 911. It comes with a built-in GPS as well. Holiday Retirement, Azalea Park’s parent company, has 262 facilities which make their travel program an attractive amenity to add to the list. If you’re a resident in Lakeland at Azalea Park and want to visit family in Flint, MI, all Frank has to do is send an email and as long as they have availability at the time, it is complimentary for you to stay at any other Holiday Retirement Community. They also have guest rooms available for $75 a night including meals for family that want to travel to stay with family. With Frank’s attitude of service for the residents, he ended on the following note, “My philosophy is: they’ve worked hard their entire lives for us, they paved the road for us. It’s our turn to work hard for them. They deserve respect.” Azalea Park 1325 Grasslands Blvd, Lakeland, FL 33803 (863) 658-6423 www.holidaytouch.com/our-communities/azalea-park

My Date with Maggie May At first, Maggie May was a bit nervous as I picked her up from the SPCA for our “Rent a Dog” date. I signed the paperwork and picked up the care bag that had all the necessities: a towel to put down in the car, water bowl, information about Maggie, and more. She hesitantly walked with me toward the car, but led me instead to a patch of grass in the parking lot where she threw on her brakes. (Maggie has a thing for grass, this will come into play later in the story.) Thankfully, an SPCA staff member saw my struggle and lifted her into the car for me. I got in and attempted to make her like me with a few cautious back scratches. She was turned away from me and seemed scared to even look in my direction. It was nothing short of heartbreaking. Drunk on puppy love and optimism with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” playing softly in the background, we were off to Benson’s Canine Cookies. I had a coupon for one free dog cookie and 20% off merchandise. This was in the care bag, thank you, SPCA! Maggie was happy to get out of the car and we made our way to the store. At the entrance Maggie used all the force her 48 pounds could muster not to go inside. Pam, the Floor Manager at Benson’s saw and met us at the door with a cookie in hopes of coaxing her in. A few minutes and a few cookies later, we were in! Still unsure of this whole adventure, Maggie sniffed the first toy she saw, a Lamb Chop stuffed animal with squeakers inside. The tension in her body seemed to melt a little as we walked slowly up and down the aisles of the store. I bent down to pet her head and for the first time all morning she looked me in the eyes. That was it, we were friends. I grabbed the Lamb Chop doll and a bag of fresh baked turkey cookies. Pam continued to give Maggie pats on the head and her stress was almost all gone. Pam has the magic touch. Back out into the parking lot she put on her brakes again. I had to pick her up and put her in the car. She was scared to look at me. I’m going to make you love me damn it if it’s the last thing I do today! So, I scratched her head and talked to her in a high

havenmagazines.com

pitched voice. Dogs love that. Windows down, sun shining, wind blowing my hair and flapping her ears, we road-tripped it to the LKLD Haven office. Out of the car she goes and straight to the grass next to the sidewalk. She must have to use the bathroom. Go for it girlfriend, this is your day. Pee on as many acres of grass as your little heart desires. She walked for a bit before plopping down in the grass. There she sat panting and happy. Time to go inside Maggie May. Nope. Not that easily. Again, we tug-a-warred and again she won. I begged, I pleaded, she didn’t move. I picked her up and walked across the intersection to the office. After the unison of “Awwwwwww” from my coworkers (because let’s be realistic here, she’s ridiculously cute), I filled her water bowl and gave her Lamb Chop. She did her fair share of sniffing people and furniture and seemed to mellow out. RIP Lamb Chop, we hardly knew ye. Maggie May, as one does, got to work to get those squeakers out. We all giggled heartily as she tossed him and shook him and ripped out his stuffing. What a cutie. Then a few people pointed out that every time I’d go to a different part of the office, she’d follow me. Oh god, we were bonding. At this point my heart is about to burst and though I went in my doggie date with the attitude of giving her a good day out and finding her a home, that attitude began to wain into ‘maybe MY house could be her home.’ By this point Maggie’s tail went from tucked between her legs to a full-on wag. She was licking people and making eye contact and romping around the office. Every office needs a dog, there I said it. There was a lot of Instagraming and Facebooking and Snapchatting going on. She’s just so photogenic. I was falling hard for this puppy. I even tried buttering up my husband to let me keep her, but to no avail. We already have two dogs and cat who’s kind of an asshole so I don’t know if it was a good idea.

32

We went for walk around the park and found ourselves at another stalemate in the grass. Thankfully Little Miss Sass got her stuff together and with a helpful nudge up from my editor, she walked with us back to the office. When it came time to take her back, I was sad. With some much needed moral support I drove her back to the SPCA. Our date was over and because I was sad to take her back, I thought she’d be sad to go too. In a very happy ending, Maggie May finally tinkled when we got to the SPCA and was all wags to get inside and see all of her pals. The fact that an dog would be happy returning to the SPCA is a testament to the love every staff member and volunteer puts into making these animals feel comfortable, happy, and loved in a less than ideal situation. My date with Maggie May was so good for my soul and I think good for hers, too. I will definitely be doing this again! Rent a dog dates are perfect for anyone looking to spend time with a dog before adopting them, a nice day out, and it has the potential of a pup meeting their future parents when you’re out and about. To find out more information, look under the “programs” tab on the SPCA website. Maggie May, you’ll always be my first love with this program and I know you’ll find the right family that’ll love you for every bit of energetic, stubborn and gentle puppy you are (If not, call me). Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market A gathering, a meeting of friends, community, family, sharing of a craft, a great local find, the genesis of a small business – the Downtown Farmers Curb Market has been all of these things and more to both its vendors and shoppers. Market Manager and founder of the DFCM, Jim Luna, started the weekly market in 2005. He was doing a project for the LDDA, providing the planters downtown for several years. During his frequent weekly trips to maintain the planters, Luna thought about a farmers market for Lakeland. Why would a community that seems to be such an incubator for creatives, and makers, and home-growers not have a forum for them to share their talents and products? Luna took this idea and ran with it, contacting markets from Sarasota to Winter Park and had some of their market managers come in to present a proposal for a Lakeland farmers market and the benefits thereof. At the time, there were, unfortunately, no bites. He let it go for a while, but eventually made a fiveyear commitment to the project because this market, he thought, was something Lakeland needed. Luna did some research and found that the original market in the 1930’s was called the Lakeland Curb Market. Borrowing from history, Luna dubbed the current market, The Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market. The first year, they even held the market in its original 1930’s location where the NOBAY building is today. They eventually settled in their permanent spot on Kentucky Avenue near Munn Park. “My initial goal with the Market was to draw business to the north end of downtown, which was always neglected, and to create community,” Luna said. “I think that we’ve achieved both of those things.” Today, the DFCM averages 60 plus vendors each Saturday with an expanse of items from coffee and art, to produce and tie-dye. The theme of the market revolves around homegrown and handmade, according to the market manager. “I like to see things that people are actually putting their hands on and actually doing something with – recycling, upcycling,” he said. In the beginning, Luna himself was a vendor at the market, selling plants and spicy jams and jellies until the market grew too much for him to be able to play both roles. The Downtown Farmers Curb Market has been havenmagazines.com

the birthplace of many local brands. Some have gone on to own their own brick and mortar stores, some growing and expanding, some new faces on the block. Ethos Coffee Roasters, Born and Bread Bakehouse, Patriot Coffee, Swan Brewing, and more all have roots at the market. What makes the DFCM such an advantage for these startups to start up? According to Luna, “It’s an affordable way to grow a business. You don’t have the overhead, the rent, that you do with a regular business to start with, and they’re able to connect with the community right away.” The farmers market to brick and mortar story of Swan Brewing is a compelling revelation of just how important the DFCM is to Lakeland entrepreneurship. “I always knew that I wanted to start a craft brewery, but I really needed a way to do market research to see if Lakeland could support (at the time) two microbreweries,” said Swan Brewing owner, Dan Thumberg. “My wife and I were walking the market one day and we had an idea – sell brewing supplies to gauge how many true craft beer people there were in Lakeland. Plus, that would allow me to start the conversation about Swan Brewing and gauge at least subjective interest in having an additional craft brewery that was a little different than what people were used to.” Now, with some “like-minded partners” by Dan’s side, Swan Brewing is a prosperous microbrewery with a 4000 sq ft building and 3500 sq ft outdoor beer garden overlooking the lake. Thumberg spoke to the advantages of starting at the market. “It’s a cheap, easy way to market yourself. There’s nothing like one-on-one, face-toface marketing. Not only that, but you have access to several thousand people at a time, most are the customers who are genuinely engaged in the community and focused on purchasing local. We had over 2500 Facebook followers before we even broke ground on our brewery, and that allowed me to keep engaged throughout the buildout with a significant amount of future customers who were already sold on our idea and the overall vision.” Dan’s advice to vendors in the early stages? “Don’t treat it as something to make a little extra money on a Saturday. Treat the market as a full-time job and always be looking beyond your tent. Have a plan to expand and constantly market to the big picture and your long-term vision.” Lisbeth Pacheco, the owner of Ethos Coffee Roasters, is at a different stage in her business but shares similar beginnings with Swan. This was Ethos’ first season at the market, having started in September of 2017. “Our business has tripled since 34

starting at the market, and we see many wonderful customers fairly regularly – there’s a strong sense of community, both among vendors and with the customers ... which has not only helped us grow our business but has also inspired many of our new offerings (like the White Swan and Black Swan blends!),” remarked Pacheco. The two benefits that Pacheco highlighted were one: “The opportunity to validate your product/business model – you’ll not only get feedback from real potential customers but also a chance to sell your product and a chance to get what we consider to be ‘ultimate validation’ – repeat customers!” And two: being a part of the community where they can meet, network, and work alongside amazing people. She noted that they have even met some of their new wholesale customers and partners at the market. “Don’t be afraid to be passionate, generous, do great work, and/or offer amazing value,” the Ethos owner advised. “Sooner or later, people will notice!” Rain or shine, kids, and pets, all are welcome at the Downtown Farmers Curb Market every Saturday, except for the month of August during which they close for a month. “I’ve met so many friends through the market,” said Luna. From expectant mothers to years later kids climbing the trees and playing tag with their friends, Luna says he sees many members from this big Lakeland family every week. Whether you’re an entrepreneur looking for a platform to share your goods or just looking to stroll the market for local offerings, check out the Downtown Farmers Curb Market when they open again in September, Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm. World Suites, The Bed and Biscuit, and The Country Cat House You’re going on vacation, why not send your pets on one too? That’s exactly what Dr. Vargas, owner of Orchid Springs Animal Clinic had in mind when she created World Suites, Polk County’s first-rate doggie hotel. Think the Ritz, but for Rover. Dr. Mitsie Vargas was born in the Bronx and grew up in Puerto Rico. She lived in Miami for two years which is where she met her husband. A weekend trip to visit her in-laws in Winter Haven was all she needed to fall in love with the city – that was in 1996. When she first moved to the area, she did relief for other clinics and realized, “I had certain ideas about how I wanted to practice and my husband was very encouraging and said, ‘let’s just do it together.’” The clinic started as a small practice about 1200-1500 square feet, right across the street from where it is today. Little by little, the business outgrew the space. “Then this place became for sale,” she said about their current facility. “We opened a 5000-square foot [facility], so it was exactly half of what it is right now.” “When we moved, I felt so blessed and so well received by the community,” she added. In five years’ time, Orchid Springs Animal Clinic was bursting at the seams. They expanded the building to double its size, now 10,000 square feet with the clinic space using about 5000 square feet of that space, and boarding, grooming, and daycare utilizing the other half. With her idea in mind, she worked to open the daycare and boarding. Being attached to the clinic is ideal for the pets and their owners. Dr. Vargas explained, “When the pets come in, they have a great time in daycare and then if they ever are sick, when they go to medical, it’s not such a stress on them. I think they do much better. Our patients do much better because they’re so used to coming in here not just because they’re sick, but because they wanted to be groomed or they wanted to go to daycare.” A good example of the benefit of having her clinic in the same building as daycare and boarding is a condition called Stress Colitis which gives the dogs stress-related diarrhea. “In another place, it might be not treated for days and the animal can get dehydrated and be in bad shape.” If it happens while your pet is in the care of Orchid Springs, they monitor them and if the animal hasn’t recovered in 24 hours, they will call the owner to let them know the situation and administer fluids and medicine so they don’t become dehydrated. “In that sense, they have the peace mind to know that if there is any adverse reaction to boarding or any situation that’s developing we catch it immediately and then we take care of it,” said the vet. While being boarded and at daycare, the caretakers fill out a daily observation chart for each animal, recording their bathroom, eating and drinking habits as well as demeanor. Her doggie daycare is such a hit that even her staff bring their pups into work. Dogs sitting at home all day tend to get bored and boredom leads to trouble. “A lot of dogs that havenmagazines.com

have behavioral problems, they have anxiety, they bark all day, they destroy things – it’s because they’re bored.” The daycare has three groups: a large group, mixed group, and small group. The mixed group is comprised of those gentle giants and smaller dogs that don’t mind being around bigger dogs. The inspiration for her premium dog boarding space, World Suites, came from places she’s traveled. Each room is themed after a different place around the world. From Germany, Mexico, Italy, Peru, France, Canada, London, Puerto Rico, Japan, New Orleans, and New York to Jamaica, the pups can take an international trip anywhere in the world. Each room has a 3D façade of its country and themed décor to match. In the center of the World Suites is Orchid Springs’ iconic bone-shaped doggie swimming pool. Above it, the “sky” is the perfect shade of baby blue spotted with wisps of clouds – the perfect weather to take a dip. Dr. Vargas also uses it for dog rehabilitation and weight loss. While on their staycation at World Suites, pups can enjoy DOGTV around the clock and parents can check in on their dogs via live cameras in each room. The Bed and Biscuit is Orchid Springs’ standard boarding and The Country Cat House is a cattery where animals of the feline variety can roam freely in a noise insulated room or stay in their cage. And if you’re reading this wondering where in the world to leave your pet parrot or ferret while you’re snorkeling in Fiji for a week, don’t worry they board exotic pets too! Dr. Vargas has created such an inviting and caring space to board animals and a clinic equally impressive backing it up. In fact, Dr. Mitsie Vargas was awarded Florida Veterinarian of the Year by the Florida Veterinary Medical Associattion in April of this year. About the award, she said, “I was very grateful and humbled and just very appreciative because it was my colleges, my professional peers that decided that.” The veterinarian does her part to contribute to the welfare of animals everywhere, not just the ones in her care. During the hurricane, she and her clients were able to pull together ten pallets of food and supplies including 2000 pounds of dog food, and five generators to Puerto Rico. At the suggestion of one of her clients named Fay Wood, Dr. Vargas created a stray animal fund call “We Love Pets.” This fund gives the clinic the financial means to help an average of 300 animals a year according to the doctor. Another client hand makes miniature pet beds that are for sale at the clinic with proceeds going to that fund. While you’re booking your own vacation, be sure to book your puppy a stay at the World Suites at Orchid Springs Animal Clinic! Or, if you just want to help out a furry friend in need, consider donating to their We Love Pets fund @welovepetsfund on Facebook.
