SIDEWALK DINING EXPANDING IN DOWNTOWN LKLD
FSC EYES ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY BUILDING FOR GRADUATE NURSING PROGRAM
STATE GRANT WILL ASSIST CLEANUP OF LAKE BONNET
MUSICK ELECTED TO SHORT-TERM SEAT ON CITY COMMISSION
CITY CONSIDERING OPTIONS FOR POLICE BODY CAMS
Look for more tables with large umbrellas on downtown Lakeland sidewalks later this year. Two initiatives will let restaurants expand their outdoor seating. City crews will be enlarging the sidewalk on Main Street across from Munn Park and adding new landscaping and road buffers. The six feet of additional sidewalk will eliminate 11 on-street parking spaces. Also, Fresco’s Southern Kitchen and Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille are getting grants to add “parklets,” movable platforms letting them replace two parking spaces each with tables.
Classrooms that were once filled with elementary-age children may soon be occupied by nurses going back to school for advanced training. Florida Southern College is under contract to buy the large building on Frank Lloyd Wright Way that once housed St. Joseph Academy. The classrooms would be reconfigured for the college’s graduate nursing program, which would have around 150 students at first but space for up to 400 eventually. City commissioners decide later this month whether to approve a needed land-use change.
The people developing the massive Bonnet Springs Park west of downtown Lakeland knew that one of their challenges would be cleaning up Lake Bonnet for recreational use. But once they started the project, they realized the lake’s pollution was even worse than they suspected. So they were relieved when Gov. Ron DeSantis came to town to announce the city of Lakeland is receiving a $42.9 million grant to improve the lake’s filtration and drainage systems and dredge sediment from the bottom. The work is also expected to prevent downstream flooding that has plagued the mobile home park on the west side of the lake.
Roofing contractor Mike Musick was elected to the Lakeland City Commission last month, but he will soon be on the campaign trail again if he wants to keep the job. The election was for a short-term seat; it is for the eight months left in the term of Scott Franklin, who resigned to run for Congress. An election for a four-year term will be held in November. So far, the only candidate who has pulled papers to run is Shandale Terrell, who lost the May runoff to Musick by 147 votes after having come in first in the April general election. Also on the November ballot: the races for mayor and two other commission seats.
The move to equip Lakeland police officers with body cameras took a step forward last month when city commissioners said they will continue exploring their options. Commissioners heard from the police chief of Kissimmee and a lieutenant from Cape Coral, who said officers in those two cities now consider body cams essential equipment after initially being skeptical. Commissioners are looking at four options from staying with just the current car dashboard cameras (four-year replacement cost: $1.2 million) to implementing a new system with new body and dashboard cameras (four-year cost: $4.4 million).
NEW SHUTTLE SERVICE WILL CIRCULATE THROUGH THE DOWNTOWN AREA
NEW UNION CONTRACT GRANTS RAISES TO LPD OFFICERS
AMAZON PLANS MASSIVE EXPANSION AT LINDER AIRPORT
SCHOOL BOARD PICKS FLORIDA NATIVE AS NEW SUPERINTENDENT
PINELLAS CHOSEN OVER LAKELAND AS HOME FOR STATE APPEALS COURT
Another article on this page mentioned plans to remove several onstreet parking places in downtown Lakeland. There are a few remedies for those taking their cars downtown, including public parking in the new Heritage Garage. Another remedy is The Squeeze, a shuttle service planned for the downtown area starting late summer or early fall. Two eight-passenger golf carts operated by the Citrus Connection will circulate on weekdays during lunchtime and on Friday and Saturday evenings. Passes will be available on a phone app: $2 for a day; $3 for a week; $9 for a month.
In a move expected to improve recruitment and retention of police officers, Lakeland commissioners approved a union contract that increases starting pay, grants delayed raises, and reduces the time it takes to achieve the highest salary. The agreement between the city and the Fraternal Order of Police applies to officers, sergeants, and lieutenants. The new minimum salary for police officers will be $52,842, City Manager Shawn Sherrouse said. More than half the officers had been making less than $50,000, according to the union board president.
Amazon is planning a nine-figure expansion of its air cargo facility at Lakeland Linder Airport that is expected to increase daily flights to 36 in 2022 and 44 by 2027. The e-commerce giant plans to lease an additional 63 acres west of its current 47 acres and add 464,000 square feet to the existing 223,000-squarefoot sorting center that opened last July. “Amazon puts us on the map whether it’s for [future] commercial air service or [maintenance, repair, and overhaul] — people are paying attention,” airport Director Gene Conrad said.
After a nationwide search, Polk School Board members selected Frederick Heid, a Florida native, to lead the school system. The 50-year-old new superintendent of schools returns to Florida from Algonquin, Ill., where he had been the superintendent. The USF grad had previously served as a teacher in Sarasota, principal in Orange County, and administrator in Jacksonville. Board members said Heid impressed employees at all levels from bus drivers to classroom teachers and administrators.
Lakeland has long been home to Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal, but that distinction is fading. First, the court vacated its moldplagued Lakeland headquarters for a temporary home in Tampa. And recently, The Florida Legislature approved a bill prioritizing Pinellas as the site of a new $50 million facility. Still, Lakeland could see an eventual benefit. After Pinellas was selected, House Speaker Chris Sprowls said that was just a first step, and “Senator (Kelli) Stargel has always been a staunch advocate for Polk County, and her long-term vision for addressing the juridical needs of the area will be realized.”

AN EMERGENCY IS STILL AN EMERGENCY. EVEN DURING THIS EMERGENCY.
Don’t let COVID-19 stop you from getting emergency treatment. Even during a pandemic, you still need to be treated immediately if you have an emergency. Debating whether or not to risk going to an emergency room during a heart attack, stroke or other health emergency—waiting even a few extra minutes—could be harmful. That’s why in
all BayCare hospital emergency rooms, patients who have symptoms of COVID-19 are screened and treated in a separate area. This helps keep emergency room patients and our team members safe. So if it’s an emergency, don’t wait. For more information: BayCareEmergencyCare.org

Polk Pride Together We Rise WORDS Tara Crutchfield
Pride Month is a time to celebrate our LGBT+ friends, family, and neighbors, and love in all its forms. Founder of Polk Pride, Scott Guira, held the first Polk Pride event in 2015. The annual celebration of community diversity and love has grown year over year. In 2020, like many gatherings, Polk Pride was canceled. This year, the festivities will move from June to October.
Megan Hawkes, Ed Torres, and Austin Briggs. Guira believes Pride sets Polk County in line with some of the larger communities that surround us. He says that being open and welcoming changes the perception of what people think of when they think of a smaller city like Lakeland. “I know this community has grown. I know that it is an outstanding place to live, to work, to play. I grew up here, and I’ve seen the community change. I want to make sure that the next generation of young people coming up and people moving this is a place to the area see that this is a place for them, this is a place for everybody,” said Guira. for them, this
Lakeland resident Scott Guira started working with the Lakeland Youth Alliance (LYA) in 2011. This organization serves LGBT+ youth ages 13 to 20. “The organization sets up a safe space environment where LGBT+ kids can come and meet other kids like themselves, build relationships with mentors, and it also gives them an opportunity to ask questions that maybe they don’t have anywhere to ask those questions in a safe environment. They’re able to come and be themselves,” said Guira.
is a place for “There is value to these organizations [Polk Pride, LYA, and PFLAG] because we everybody offer support to young people. We offer support to parents and family members, and friends who are having trouble accepting or understanding the situation that their family member might be going through with the coming out process. What makes Pride so important is it shows the diversity out in the center of town. We do this in Munn Park so that everybody, whatever their background, can come and be part of Polk Pride. You don’t have to be any of the letters in the acronym. You can be any member of the community that wants to be part of celebrating everybody and their differences and their similarities.”
Though the mission of LYA was to create that safe space for LGBT+ young people, Guira said, “I never really felt like we were providing a safe community.” They could come to LYA and be themselves, but outside of that? “A lot of them didn’t feel like they were able to be themselves and live in the community that we’re in,” he said. Pride was an effort to create a community in Polk County that not only LGBT+ youth but LGBT+ of all ages could feel welcome. Guira is assisted in his efforts by the Polk Pride Board, including Kerri McCoy, Kristine Lally, Patrick Patterson, Dustin Shay, Nick Sotolongo, Gina Bullock,

A CHALLENGING YEAR When Kerri McCoy’s eldest son came out in high school, she began advocating that he and other members of the LGBT+ community be treated equally to everyone else. Three years after joining the PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) of Polk County, she became the chapter’s president. “I feel like everyone should be treated equally. Having a gay son and knowing that the laws don’t treat him like everybody else because he doesn’t fit in that box, that’s what keeps me going,” she said. “I absolutely love the youth. I know they struggle, and I don’t want them to. I want them to know that there are people out there that are just like them, and there are people out there that they can talk to. There are people who have struggled before there is them. I feel like that’s so important that they know they are not alone, [...] that there is somebody always willing to stand beside and always willing somebody stand up for them, and I just happen to be to stand beside one of those people.”
and stand up for them
McCoy expressed that the last year has been challenging for the LGBT+ community. “I think for a while there, some people may have felt very alone,” she said. She received quite a few phone calls from folks eager to know when they could finally meet again for their usual activities and meetings. PFLAG began socially distant outdoor meetings

around six months ago and began meeting indoors with masks in the last two months. LYA has yet to resume meeting in person, according to McCoy. Their first gathering will be an outdoor downtown scavenger hunt scheduled for August. “They are ready to get back together. I think the kids really need this group,” she said. To stay connected and maintain a sense of togetherness, they did hold remote meetings online. “I think they like meeting in-person better,” McCoy said. “I think it’s easier for some of them to come out of their shells and be themselves rather than on a computer screen.” Last year would have marked the sixth Polk Pride. Since its inception in 2015, the series of events that make up Polk Pride has expanded annually. Guira said to put a pause on such a meaningful gathering was disappointing. “But we also knew it was the right thing to do for our community and for everybody that was involved. It was a challenging year, but we’re excited to move forward,” he said. Typically Pride is held in June in honor of Pride Month. This year, the series of events, including Pride for Youth, Pride in Faith, Pride in the Park, and Pride After Dark, have been moved to late September and early October. Though the events are moving to the Fall this year, proclamations are still being sought for June. The LGBT+ community has received two proclamations recognizing June as Pride Month with more on the way from cities around the county. The first proclamation this year was from Haines City on May 20 and the second from The City of Lakeland scheduled for June 7.
TOGETHER WE RISE “With the uncertainty of COVID-19 and the concerns that everybody has, we wanted to allow enough time to put the world in a better situation where we can start having these large gatherings,” said Guira. “It looks like with increased vaccination and things getting a little more back to normal – hopefully, in October, we will be in a much better position than we are in June.” In addition to their caution surrounding the pandemic, the Polk Pride board chose October as it is National Coming Out Month, according to McCoy. National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11. “Our goal this year is to bring people back together. To rise
up from a difficult year that we’ve all experienced worldwide and to bring people together from all different backgrounds to celebrate Pride and to celebrate one another and the differences that we all have,” said Guira. Kicking off the festivities is Pride for Youth on September 29 at 6:30 pm. The location is to be determined. McCoy described this Lakeland Youth Alliance Pride party as an occasion for youth ages 13 to 20 to gather and celebrate Pride while participating in fun activities. The next evening, September 30 at 7 pm, will be Pride in Faith – an interfaith celebration of Pride at Beacon Hill Fellowship Church in Lakeland. “Several churches participate from around the Polk County area, and they are all open and affirming churches who welcome the LGBT.” During the service, McCoy said, “We get together and let people know who might be struggling that they don’t belong in a church – that they actually do – and there is a place for them in one of the churches that come and celebrate Pride in Faith.” Pride in the Park is Polk Pride’s largest event, drawing several thousand annually to Munn Park in downtown Lakeland. This year, Pride in the Park will be on Saturday, October 2, from 10 am to 3 pm. The event is family-friendly, appropriate for all ages, and open to the public. “I’m looking forward to hugs. I think we’re all looking forward to hugs,” said Guira of the upcoming Pride celebration. “I think everybody has lacked that physical connection with other people. Celebrating Pride, if you’ve ever been to a Pride before, there is just love everywhere. Everyone is hugging and friendly and taking care of one another and happy to see one another and engaged. To support Polk Pride, PFLAG, or the Lakeland Youth Alliance, folks can become a sponsor, volunteer, donate, or join their initiatives. Guira noted they are always looking for volunteers to work with youth, at Pride events, and in other ways. Those interested in volunteering or joining their boards can contact the organizations on their website or through social media.
“Outside of specifically helping the organizations, it’s being an ally,” said Guira. “It’s speaking up when somebody says something that’s not right. It’s reaching out to somebody in need. Trishelle Michaels Apart from the work they put into performing, drag queens have historically been champions of change for the LGBTQ+ community. Queens like Marsha P. Johnson, the transgender drag queen who was one of the first to resist police during the 1969 Stonewall riots, which are widely regarded as an impetus for the gay rights movement. Yes, drag queens can be campy and quippy and read you to filth while wearing 6-inch heels, but they are also powerful and positive role models for selfexpression and confidence – queens like Trishelle Michaels.
BEHIND THE GLAMOUR “Trishelle Michaels was born through MTV and audience decision,” said Reeves. After hearing the name Trishelle on MTV’s The Real World, he loved how unique it sounded. ‘Michaels’ was voted on by an audience at a bar when Reeves first began performing. He gave them options, the audience voted, and it stuck. “Trishelle is a role model. Trishelle is a promoter. Trishelle is someone that you could come and talk to, that you could message if there are any questions regarding gay life, regarding life in general, […] I think it’s important to make myself available to those people,” Reeves said. And there have been people who have reached out to Trishelle for advice. “Within the past ten years since I’ve been here in Polk County, I’ve really made an effort to be someone that can be looked up to without people feeling that they can’t talk to me.”
Terrance Reeves is a Florida native, born and raised in Central Florida. He moved to the Winter Haven area in 2009, where he lives with his husband of ten years. Reeves, a bowler for 35 years, works in the bowling industry at Kegel LLC in Lake Wales, manufacturing lane machines that clean the lanes. He’s been with them for 16 years. Reeves has been a highly competitive bowler for quite some time and was even on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour in the exempt field from 2008 to 2009. He was among the top 64 bowlers in the PBA at that time. His family built a bowling center in Brandon in the early 80s. Reeves described bowling as a serious side of himself and feels fortunate to work in the industry. “I enjoy going to work every day. Not a lot of people can say that, and I’m just really blessed and fortunate,” he said.
As for Trishelle’s style, Reeves said, “In drag, there are different genres. Just as there are in music, you have different styles of drag. [...] I’m definitely a businesswoman when it comes to my drag. I’m not the high glitz and glam. I’m very straightforward with who I am and what I do with it.” With years spent in the world of competitive bowling, Reeves wasn’t interested in competing when it came to drag. “I try to be myself,” he said.
Another meaningful part of Reeves’s life and work in its own right is his drag queen persona, Trishelle Michaels. When Reeves came out in his early twenties, he wandered into the world of drag. “I never said ‘This is what I want to do,’” said Reeves. Through friends at what was then Club Chambers, and The Male Room in Tampa, Reeves got to work alongside drag queens who were great at what they did. He found a niche, and the rest is history. Reeves began performing as Trishelle Michaels with the help of her drag mother, First Lady of Ybor, Joey Brooks. “She was a big influence. She gave me an opportunity to let me hone in on my skills, gave me tips, and made me better. Without her direction when I first started, we might not be having this conversation,” said Reeves.
Just as there are many genres in the community, so too are there many people and personalities. Drag queens are not a monolith, expressed Reeves. One misconception about the drag community, he said, is that they are all the same. “People might think that I’m flamboyant and all that, but they have to know, for me, that’s just a side of who I am. I’m super chill,” he said. Reeves is also very into sports. “This is where me and the other queens are completely different. They want to go to the movies, and they want to go out to the theme parks, and that is totally not me.” Lip syncing, killer costumes, and comedy are all part of what makes Trishelle Michaels dynamite on stage. “When I’m on the mic, I try to make people laugh. I think that’s one of my attributes and what draws people into me is my personality,” said Reeves. “I’ll be the first one to laugh at myself. I’ll make fun of myself because, at the end of the day of those shows, I’m a man in a dress. I am fortunate enough to be comfortable with myself.”
Reeves is thankful for the queens that paved the way and gave him opportunities throughout his drag career, noting that they “set the pathway for us to be where we are now.” Along with Joey Brooks, Reeves named Crystle Chambers and Kathryn Nevets as inspirations who have helped him with opportunities and guidance.
Preparing for a show is no small feat either. It can take upwards of two or three hours to get ready. Few outside of the drag community know the actual work that goes into getting glammed and ready for a stint in the spotlight. “We’ve got to
“You can’t do it alone,” he said. “You’ve got to listen to people sometimes to make yourself better.”

shave, and we’ve got to put the makeup on, we’ve got to put the outfits together and pack the bags. If we go into a show and we’re asked to do two, three, four songs, that’s an outfit change every time,” said Reeves. Four outfit changes means four wigs, four pairs of shoes, and jewelry for each getup – it’s a lot.
When she’s working, Trishelle finds that she is very focused on producing a show that people enjoy, talk about, and ultimately want to return to. “At the end of the night, when you have a successful show, there’s no other feeling than accomplishment,” Reeves said.
“When we’re changing, we have just a couple of minutes per song to change from one to another. There’s so much work behind the scenes that people don’t see,” he said. “I think it’s important for those younger queens to know that it’s not just putting on makeup. It’s not just putting on a new wig. It’s polishing up what you do and making it better next time.”
ADVICE FOR FUTURE QUEENS Trishelle Michaels has sage advice, not just for drag queens. She strives to be inclusive of everyone. “Gay comes in all different shapes and forms – it’s not just me. […] We’re all different. We all have opportunities to be ourselves. There are a lot of drag kings that don’t get the attention that we get. I think it’s important that we all share the spotlight. [...] That is definitely one of my areas where I try to do great work, to share my spotlight and my opportunities with others in the community, especially on the entertainment side.”
Drag goes beyond a larger-than-life personality and top-tier performance chops; it requires a nose to the grindstone work ethic. “Some people are scared to work, and that’s why you see some people fade out in this business,” Reeves said. “If they don’t have a good work ethic, they’re probably not going to make it.”
According to Reeves, the Polk County drag community is small but mighty, with around fifteen queens heavily involved in performing locally. “Opportunities sometimes aren’t as much because we’re in Polk County, and it is so easy and accessible to get to Orlando or Tampa, but that’s not what I want to do. […] I focus my energy locally. I have no big desire to go to those other markets.”
“We’re presenting something we’re not, but we’re also presenting something that is fun and eclectic and entertaining,” he said. “It’s self-gratifying to get in heels and be like, ‘Okay, it’s time to go to work.’ If I didn’t enjoy it and I didn’t love it, trust me, I wouldn’t do it because there is a lot of work that goes into getting ready.” IN THE SPOTLIGHT A conversation with Reeves and a look through any of Trishelle Michaels’s social media posts reflect an air of gratitude and encouragement. She is an uplifter of others. “That’s one thing I try to project and to bring, whether it’s a smile or a thought to somebody’s day. My drag, I don’t specifically do it for me. I do it for others even though I do enjoy doing it.”
Places like The Parrot, Balmoral, Frescos, and Gary’s Grove host regular or quarterly drag shows. Michaels hosted Polk Pride in 2019 and has been a regular performer at The Parrot in Lakeland since moving here in 2009. Another go-to spot is The American Legion in Winter Haven. Next year will be her fourth annual show there. She also helps their members get dressed up to raise money for their charity efforts.
Reeves says his positive attitude is a reflection of how he was raised. “My family, they weren’t so accepting of the gay side. It was just recently in the past couple of years that my mom and stepdad came to a show,” he said. “They’re very accepting of it now and understand that it’s a sort of work for me, and they see the positive side of it.”
Asked if he had any advice for someone reading this who may want to try drag or is just starting, Reeves answered, “Do it. You’re not learning or creating anything if you’re not making any mistakes.” Like everything else in life, the more one does an activity, the better one becomes at it. “Just do it, give it a shot. What do you have to lose?”
“They definitely raised me right. It was just something new for them. I think that sometimes the straight people that go to these shows – it’s something new for them,” he said. And in many of the areas around Polk County that Trishelle performs shows, the crowd mainly consists of straight people. “If I can bring them to a comfort level to join in on a show, that is probably the biggest highlight for me. [...] I want them to laugh and enjoy entertainment. And that’s really what drag is – entertainment.”
“Just because you do something one time doesn’t mean that it’s going to be the same next time. Maybe some of the brushstrokes aren’t the same. Maybe some of the colors aren’t the same. You’re creating something every time you put yourself together. I think that’s the fun of it.” Follow Trishelle Michaels on Facebook and Instagram to see where she’ll be performing next. She is at The Parrot two times a month and Gary’s Grove and Balmoral quarterly. To book Michaels, for more information, or with any questions, reach out to her through social media.
Trishelle hopes the audience gets to take a break from their lives during her time on stage. Though Trishelle Michaels is an expression of Terrance Reeves, it’s also a break from the day-today minutia. “It’s a break from the regular routine of life. You can just be yourself,” he said.

Sweet Cup Café Sweet Cup Cafe is a flash of fuchsia on the northside of Lakeland, a little bubblegum pink building you might miss if you blink. Inside this pleasant little cafe, Francelly and Yesenia Garcia backed by an all-female team, offer home-cooked food from their culture. Sweet Cup offers soups, tortas, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, salads, Aguas Frescas, fruit cups, and mangonadas, made by even sweeter sisters. Francelly and Yesenia Garcia opened the eatery on March 1. Though Francelly was born in Mexico and Yesenia in Arcadia, the pair have lived here long enough to consider Lakeland home. “I like Lakeland,” Yesenia said. “I like that it’s growing. There are a lot more opportunities. It’s a cute little town.” Francelly agreed, adding, “I feel like Polk County is my home. Lakeland is big enough to where it has everything we need, but it still has that small-town vibe.” SANDWICHES ARE OVERRATED To the Garcia’s, food and love are synonymous. Growing up, the sisters enjoyed home-cooked meals from their mother and grandmother, though they both feel they took it for granted at times. “It’s something that I didn’t appreciate as much,” said

Yesenia. “When I realized that I have this amazing food all the time and not everyone does, I started to appreciate food.” A trip to Mexico several years ago compounded that appreciation. “The tacos in Mexico, are truly so much better than any taco I’ve ever had.” Some of her earliest memories were always having home-cooked meals, especially eggs. “Even though they were eggs, the way my mom made them, they were so much better than anywhere else,” she smiled. For Francelly, it was her grandma’s ‘little taco trailer’ – a vintage travel trailer out of which she would sell enchiladas and tacos. Francelly would eat there at least three nights a week. “We grew up around it, and we’ve taken it for granted a lot of the time,” she said. As other kids unpacked their sandwiches, Lunchables, and leftover spaghetti in elementary school, Francelly remembers craving to be “normal.” “‘Normal’ to me was sandwiches, spaghetti, burgers, hotdogs – but that wasn’t what we ate,” she said. Instead, their meals at home consisted of rice and beans, many dishes infused with chili, spices, cumin, cinnamon, or cilantro. This made her think of the mole she would get from her partner’s sister in Central Mexico. “It’s cocoa, chili, some nuts, and pumpkin seeds. They roast it all, and they grind it, and it turns into this thick brown paste. You simmer that down,

add some chicken broth. Then you put some chicken in it. It has so many layers – it’s got chocolate, it’s got chilis. It’s a unique taste,” she said. “I’ve had it all my life. I just didn’t know the process. I didn’t know how rich our cuisine is.”
LIVING THE DREAM “We just want to do home-cooking. It didn’t start out that way. We wanted to sell coffee and fruit cups,” Francelly said of the Sweet Cup concept. It was just an idea to start. The new grad didn’t have the seed money to start a venture of her own just yet. But she knew when she did, it would involve coffee. “I always thought about creating something beautiful where anybody is welcome,” she said. “Being not-American in America, sometimes there can be places where you don’t feel welcome – people look at you in a different way. In Polk County, there are a lot of places like that.” Francelly and Yesenia wanted to create an inviting atmosphere where everyone feels welcome.
Working with her sister at Sweet Cup, Francelly has new regard for the food she ate growing up, like the corn her grandmother would grind using a metate. “You put the corn in there with a little bit of water, and you start grinding with a stone by hand. Grandma used to do it all the time. I didn’t appreciate how laborious it was and how good and how rich I had it.” The sisters started in the kitchen around seven or eight years old. “Being in a Mexican family, your dad is always going to tell you that you have to learn how to cook. I had to be in the kitchen, and I had to at least watch my mom and see what she put in the food. I still don’t make tortillas all that great – sometimes I burn them,” said Yesenia, and the sisters laughed.
“We’ve always had this mutual love for coffee. I don’t know if I’m the weird one. I just think everyone wants to own a coffee shop,” Francelly said. Her life’s dream is to make and sell fresh churros and good coffee out of a vintage travel trailer that she could pack up on a shipping container and serve worldwide.
For Francelly, it was the same, helping out in the kitchen. She started off making and kneading the dough for tortillas, working her way up to putting them on the comal or griddle, picking up the skill little by little.
No longer satisfied with selling produce which she described as a demanding and male-dominated business, Francelly wanted to pursue something different. She worked for her father at - CONTINUED ON PAGE 30 -

his wholesale produce company before starting her own with the help of her parents. She loves her father dearly, saying, “Everything I am is because of my parents.” But, headstrong personalities run in the family, and she craved to do her own thing. “In some roles, we are very traditional, but in other instances, he never discouraged us from doing everything that a man can do,” she said of her father.
Still, they persisted and opened the doors on March 1. The sisters have assembled an all-female team, including their aunt, the head cook. “We do feel like women can do basically anything a man can do,” said Francelly. As women often aren’t given the same opportunities or recognition as men in the restaurant industry, it means a lot to Francelly and Yesenia to work with an all-female team. “Aunts, moms, grandmas – they’re the MVPs of food in our culture,” said Francelly.
“I always say, ‘You don’t need a man to do business, but you need a man to do business,’” said Francelly. When she would work with suppliers for the produce business, they often wouldn’t take her seriously, opting to deal with her partner instead. “It got to me. It made me a little resentful,” she said. “I’m the one who has put a lot of work into this. How come just because he’s a man, you take him more seriously?”
FOOD IS LOVE “Food is love,” said Francelly. “Whenever my grandma gives me a plate of food, I know she’s got love in it. Whenever my mom gives me a plate of food, I know it’s made with love.” They created their menu and the dishes they serve with the same sentiment. “If we’re going to share our cuisine, we’ve got to make things that we make with love – that we believe in,” she said.
After expressing to her partner, who she describes as openminded, encouraging, and always supportive of her ideas, that she wanted something she had more control over, he suggested making fruit cups and Aguas Frescas. Francelly got her sister on board, and Sweet Cup Cafe was in the works. “We wanted to create something different, something that involved coffee, something where anybody and everybody can come and feel like they’re a part of it,” said Yesenia.
That love comes in the form of high-quality, honest ingredients. Their steak tacos, for instance, are made with Certified Angus Beef. Herbs like epazote and Yerba Buena are picked from their herb garden outside to add fresh flavor to their dishes. “I wouldn’t feed anyone anything I wouldn’t feed to my kids,” said Francelly. Many ingredients and dishes at Sweet Cup are hand-made, from their Aguas Frescas to their tortillas. “When you taste a quesadilla, when you taste a burrito, you don’t get

that bitter after-taste. You get the fresh tortillas – it’s wheat, water, and a little bit of salt,” said Francelly of their flour tortillas made by hand by her aunt. “Simple things are what makes food good.” Their beans are boiled with herbs from their garden and refried, and the sauce is made with fresh tomatillos. “We put a lot of thought and love into it,” said Yesenia.
Fruit cups are another Sweet Cup Café signature. You can get it with any fruit you like – watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, pineapple, mango. Traditionally they’re eaten as a snack with salt, lime, and chili, said Francelly, but their sizes are filling enough to be a meal on its own. Something she wishes more people would try in their fruit cups is cucumber. It may not sound like a fruit cup front runner, but Francelly says it mixes sublimely with the salt, lime, and chili.
If it’s your first time checking out Sweet Cup, Francelly recommends a little taste of this and that. She suggests a steak taco – a classic – along with their cochinita pibil. According to Francelly, the dish originates from Mexico and is traditionally cooked underground. At Sweet Cup, they marinate it with sour oranges, herbs, and spices, wrap it in banana leaves and roast it between six and eight hours in the oven. “That’s something from our home from mom’s side of the family that we wanted to share,” said Francelly of the shredded pork dish. “We want to introduce everything that makes us unique and who we are.”
As for the future, Yesenia and Francelly look forward to expanding – perhaps to the southside. Francelly shared an anecdote from their dad. He had a professor in college who, at 80 years old, still had significant plans for the future. “My dad made the observation that as human beings, we never stop dreaming. We’re always chasing something. […] I think we’re always going to be chasing something. We’re always going to be like, ‘Okay, we’ve mastered this, what’s next? […] Can we open another one while staying true to who we are while giving the same quality and that same service? That’s what we want to do.”
Along with the steak taco and cochinita taco, order any of their from-scratch soups like veggie or pozole. They also offer burritos, quesadillas, and plenty of fruit and fresh drink options. To go with your soup and tacos, Yesenia suggests a mangonata. This frozen treat has fresh mango, ice, added sugar, Chamoy, chili sugar, and a tamarind stick. “It’s really beautiful,” Yesenia said. “When people receive one […] they’re so excited and so happy, and that warms my heart. It makes me feel good to see somebody enjoy something from our culture.”

WORDS Nando Del Castillo
Father of FIVE, SIX… I have been answering to “Dad” for a long time, more than half my life.
together by one parent, without a father or a mother. Some children are raised by two dads, two moms or by a grandma and grandpa. However a child is loved and raised, in my opinion, the male figure is a very important presence to have in some way for childhood development.
My father has been around for all of it too. He is still positively impacting all our lives. My Dad, Dr. Del Castillo brought many children into this world, especially in the “863,” to some very nervous fathers to be and fathers that already were fathers. Some dads had already become grandfathers and then became fathers again. I fall into this category. A lot of children help take care of their fathers as they grow older when they need help, even if they are too proud to ask.
Father’s Day is about honoring my father and taking time out to think about him and all the sacrifices he made for his family and me while we grew up. Many men don’t realize or recognize this until they become fathers. I was one of them. Fortunately I became a dad at 21, and my eyes were wide open! I began realizing my dad wasn’t perfect, and neither was I. The idea of the day being a day of honoring fathers was and still is to remind us as often as possible how important he was to our survival. I know in this day and age there are always exceptions to this. Some have no relationship with their father and for very good reason. Those that don’t follow that category I am speaking to. Take the time and find the good in anything that your dad did and if you can’t find anything, look at yourself and know you wouldn’t be here reading this if it wasn’t for him. Kind of basic, I know, but it is true.
My Dad had a stroke two years ago and cannot speak, but he can definitely communicate in other ways. He is very good at explaining by hand gestures. He can say a lot with just one finger. The last couple of years have taught me about compassion, perseverance, and love. Not only did I become a father again, but I also had to come to the reality that he wouldn’t be around forever, and neither would I. Fathers and sons seem to always butt heads at some time during their rearing. I know this is normal now, but when I grew up, I thought my dad didn’t know what he was talking about. I thought I was right, and he just didn’t understand. It is nature’s way of preparing us for adulthood. And it is a father’s way of the same. Growing up on the Eagle Lake farm, I couldn’t sit still. It was perfect for me because there was always plenty of work to do and plenty to look at and watch. Right before sunrise as the yellowish central Florida golden glow of the sun peaked through the orange groves above the lake, I would hear the roosters crowing and the horses rustling around starting their day. I couldn’t get outside fast enough to see the day wake up. I would watch the proud rooster herd and corral the mother hen and chickies, keeping them safe and always in his sight away from what he perceived as danger. The foal would frolic, and the mare would graze, occasionally nudging the rambunctious baby back as he would sometimes get a little out of hand. My father did the same. Most do in my observation.
Some people think I am nuts for starting over and having another baby. My other five kids are all adults and living on their own doing well. As I already mentioned, I am a grandfather to two children, and my newest child Nando who is younger than them is their uncle. Weird huh? It is to me, but I have to say that the secret to my life is exactly that… life. I believe that is why we are here to procreate and raise our children to positively influence this wonderful diverse world. I believe it keeps me looking forward and with hope of the youth. I was just perfectly interrupted by a wave and a tapping from inside the Airstream window by my son. His beautiful mother Sally was holding him smiling at me. “Dada, Are you almost finished writing your Haven piece? Nandito is ready for the beach,” Sally said tenderly over the Sound of Music Soundtrack that they were listening to. Nandito was proudly waving at me smiling ear to ear as I waved back to them. I said, “I am almost finished then we can go!”
Fathers have always been honored by wives and sons and daughters and from cave drawings to the Bible. In the middle ages, they started celebrating an actual day to honor fatherhood. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that the United States, after Mother’s Day was beginning to take hold, that a woman proposed we honor all fathers, especially those that recently died in a tragic mining accident in West Virginia. It didn’t take hold to become a national holiday until 1972, while under President Nixon. Mother’s day had been celebrated for a long while before that. Dads were still always around. You couldn’t have one without the other literally, but now Father’s Day was official.
Well it is now 10:15am and the sun is warming me at the picnic table and I have been writing since sunrise. I am getting a little hungry too. I suppose I could continue writing on and on about what I learned from my dad and how that helped me become a “Better” dad, but I’ve got precious time to spend with my newest son and my wifey, AKA, “My Maria.” Whether you’re fixing barbed wire fences with your dad, washing his truck, not the way he wants you to, or camping in Cortez, Florida, you are together. Those are the times you will cherish later.
Today a lot has changed. I know that many homes are held

The band amicably broke up circa 2004, according to Collins. Following Denison Marrs, Collins and his brother-in-law, Dean Lorenz, wrote and demoed an album that also got a record deal. They were set to go on tour with their band, The Dark Romantics, but the bandmates didn’t want to leave their wives behind. So, Carla learned bass, her sister Amanda, keyboard, and a friend on drums joined the tour. They still look back on it and laugh, said Collins. “They could all play the parts perfectly [to their songs], but they couldn’t play any other songs. […] I thought that was so cool. That’s the most punk thing to me,” he said. The band put out a couple of albums and toured between 2006 and 2009, according to Collins.
“As a kid, my mom raised me on classic rock,” he said. As he grew, the rhythms of Led Zeppelin turned into hip hop and rap in middle school. Influences from artists like Public Enemy have carried over into his “grimey anthems dripping with salty alt-rock garage-y grunge vibes or whatever.” “Their production was a lot of sampling noise and jazz records,” he said of the hip hop group. “That has carried over into my music too because I still like to make noise textures with feedback and distortions.” It wasn’t until high school that he got into more alternative and grunge. Collins talked about meeting his wife, Carla. “She had way better taste in music than I did, so she was introducing me to punk bands, and we were discovering other bands together.”
Craving a creative outlet to make and play music, Collins started MrENC at home. “I started doing a song at a time, releasing it online, and started to grow again,” he said. He worked with New Granada Records out of Tampa to put out a few 7-inches, cassettes, and the first two full-length albums. The early days of MrENC were Collins playing every part and instrument needed to create a song from piano to guitar.
Other influences for MrENC (standing for his initials: Eric N. Collins) include The Smashing Pumpkins – who he connects with, from their lyrics down to guitar tones. The ‘space rock’ subgenre sounds of Failure and Hum inspired Collins, too. He liked the flow of their songs and album arrangements, creating a mood.
Missing the band element, he invited his brother-in-law Dean to play drums with him along with other musicians. Collins appreciated having his friends and other local musicians involved. Lorenz currently plays guitar for MrENC, and he and Collins write songs together. Another contributor to the band is Casey Newton, “awesome bass player” and studio manager for The Vanguard Room. “They’ve always been so kind and honoring to me here,” he said of The Vanguard Room owners.
Collins played trombone in school but found his way musically through his mother’s acoustic guitar. In high school, he started messing around on her guitar more seriously. “My dad went and bought me this guitar chord poster from the mall,” said Collins. “I had it on the back of my door, and I’d sit on my bed, learning how to move my fingers and play chords and writing terrible songs.” FROM GARAGE BAND TO TOURING THE NATION
Collins and Newton worked together on a song for The Vanguard Room’s 2019 Christmas album, “A Lakeland Christmas.” The two became fast friends, and Newton joined MrENC on bass.
Towards the end of high school, he started playing with a few buddies – one played drums, another bass, a friend of a friend playing guitar. “It was all these older teen kids that didn’t know what we were doing,” he laughed. “Literally a garage band.” The band dubbed themselves Denison Marrs. “We would save up money and record locally,” said Collins. They recorded in a building behind Lakeland Square Mall.
Thinking back to the earlier sounds that MrENC put out, playing all the instruments himself, Collins said, “I was missing people, missing their input and really their creativity. When it’s just my mind, I feel like everything starts to be the same for each song.”
“We recorded the tape in his funky little building, and then we made cassettes. We’d go to Walmart and buy

THE EVOLUTION OF MRENC AND HIS ‘GRIMEY ANTHEMS’
“I really wanted to do music that throws back to that but is also still progressing. Lyrically, I want to write about my memories coming up in Lakeland and around Polk County, but then also mix in what I’m seeing other artists doing,” he said.
Like any good artist, Collins has had a musical evolution throughout his career. From the ‘big alternative’ and ‘space rock’ sounds of Denison Marrs in the same vein as The Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones to the ‘darker New York style’ of The Dark Romantics, similar to the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Interpol. “I’ve always maintained the alternative vibe, but stylistically I like to try new stuff and try to progress and push myself,” he said.
Back in the day, Collins said, “There was definitely a divide between the adults and the kids. […] We put on shows anywhere we could.” MrENC says the tides have shifted, and he’s observed businesses and venues being more open and supportive of local art and music. “I wanted to write about it. I wanted to mix my nostalgia and reminiscing with what else I’m seeing going on.”
Of his earlier MrENC music, Collins said, “It was a little more artsy and a little more surf, spy guitar […] The tones and the drums were more stripped down.” That stripped-down sound got bigger and bigger as more artists got involved.
The EP’s lyrics, Twisty Treat album art, and music video imagery are an ode to what Collins thinks of when he reflects on his time growing up in Lakeland – he and his friends cutting their own hair and piercing their ears with safety pins, thrifting for clothes at the Salvation Army, going to Twisty Treat after a football game, Silver Moon Drive-In, Southgate Shopping Plaza. All things that are now special to his kids and their generation. “It was me reminiscing about nostalgia, but I didn’t want to lean too heavily on that like a gimmick. I wanted to make sure that I married it with the new generation and what they’re doing, what they’re looking for, what they’re going through and experiencing,” he said.
Collins returned to that big alternative rock vibe on his 2019 EP, “On and On and On,” and his most recent EP, “We Do Our Own Thing.” A friend referred to these songs as ‘grimey anthems,’ he said, because, “They’re so big and noisy and fuzzy in tones. They’re so big and loud.” These recent releases were inspired by the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, The Breeders, Yuck, Nothing, and Starflyer 59. ‘WE DO OUR OWN THING’ For “We Do Our Own Thing,” Collins wrote songs and lyrics before he started demoing them. He said, “I was more focused on the plan and idea, the theme that I wanted to go with.” Over the last few years, Collins noticed what he called a kind of ‘renaissance’ or ‘rebirth’ on the Polk County art scene. From music to visual artists and everyone in between, “I’ve noticed the way that everyone is trying to collaborate and push each other, and trying so hard to do new stuff,” he said. “That’s how culture is built. All creatives are trying to do something and build something. Then it all finally starts to grow together.”
“We Do Our Own Thing” is an EP in homage to the artists and the art – for Collin’s generation and his daughter’s. He described the last track, “All This Time,” as “a light-hearted love song for music in general,” saying, “It’s brought me so much joy and connection – music has – with people around Florida and the nation. Music has blessed me with so many friends and relationships and experiences and adventures.” You can pick up “We Do Our Own Thing” on 7-inch vinyl at Jesse Carl Vinyl in Lakeland or online. Beyond promoting this latest EP, MrENC is recording three songs for their part of a six-song, split 10-inch with The Night Thief, a band out of Los Angeles, from Lakeland initially. That project is expected to come out in late 2021 or early 2022. Though MrENC won’t be doing any heavy touring anytime soon due to the pandemic, you can catch them for a free show at Rock the Park at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa on Thursday, June 3 at 6:30 pm. The band is heading to Birmingham, Alabama, to play Furnace Fest in September. Later in the year, Collins says he’s open to the potential of a series of mini-tours to places like Savannah, Asheville, Nashville, and Atlanta.
